Assyrian Invasion Prophesied
1 וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֵלַ֔י (to me), קַח־ (Take) לְךָ֖ (for yourself) גִּלָּי֣וֹן (a scroll) גָּד֑וֹל (large) וּכְתֹ֤ב (and write) עָלָיו֙ (on it) בְּחֶ֣רֶט (with a pen) אֱנ֔וֹשׁ (of man): לְמַהֵ֥ר (Maher-) שָׁלָ֖ל (shalal-) חָ֥שׁ (hash-) בַּֽז׃ (baz).
2 וְאָעִ֣ידָה (And I will appoint) לִּ֔י (for Myself) עֵדִ֖ים (by witnesses) נֶאֱמָנִ֑ים (faithful)— אֵ֚ת (-) אוּרִיָּ֣ה (Uriah) הַכֹּהֵ֔ן (the priest) וְאֶת־ (and) זְכַרְיָ֖הוּ (Zechariah) בֶּ֥ן (son) יְבֶרֶכְיָֽהוּ׃ (of Jeberekiah).
3 וָאֶקְרַב֙ (And I came near) אֶל־ (to) הַנְּבִיאָ֔ה (the prophetess), וַתַּ֖הַר (and she conceived) וַתֵּ֣לֶד (and gave birth to) בֵּ֑ן (a son). וַיֹּ֤אמֶר (And said) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֵלַ֔י (to me), קְרָ֣א (Call) שְׁמ֔וֹ (his name) מַהֵ֥ר (Maher-) שָׁלָ֖ל (shalal-) חָ֥שׁ (hash-) בַּֽז׃ (baz).
4 כִּ֗י (For) בְּטֶ֙רֶם֙ (before) יֵדַ֣ע (knows) הַנַּ֔עַר (the child) קְרֹ֖א (to cry), אָבִ֣י (My father) וְאִמִּ֑י (and My mother), יִשָּׂ֣א׀ (one will lift away) אֶת־ (-) חֵ֣יל (the wealth) דַּמֶּ֗שֶׂק (of Damascus) וְאֵת֙ (and) שְׁלַ֣ל (the plunder) שֹׁמְר֔וֹן (of Samaria) לִפְנֵ֖י (before the face of) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) אַשּֽׁוּר׃ס (of Assyria).
5 וַיֹּ֣סֶף (And continued) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) דַּבֵּ֥ר (to speak) אֵלַ֛י (to me) ע֖וֹד (again), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying),
6 יַ֗עַן (Because) כִּ֤י (that) מָאַס֙ (has rejected) הָעָ֣ם (the people) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) אֵ֚ת (-)
מֵ֣י (the waters) הַשִּׁלֹ֔חַ (of Shiloah) הַהֹלְכִ֖ים (those going) לְאַ֑ט (gently),
וּמְשׂ֥וֹשׂ (and are rejoicing) אֶת־ (with) רְצִ֖ין (Rezin)
וּבֶן־ (and the son) רְמַלְיָֽהוּ׃ (of Remaliah).
7 וְלָכֵ֡ן (Therefore), הִנֵּ֣ה (behold), אֲדֹנָי֩ (the Lord) מַעֲלֶ֨ה (is bringing up) עֲלֵיהֶ֜ם (over them) אֶת־ (-)
מֵ֣י (the waters) הַנָּהָ֗ר (of the River) הָעֲצוּמִים֙ (mighty) וְהָ֣רַבִּ֔ים (and great)— אֶת־ (-)
מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) אַשּׁ֖וּר (of Assyria) וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) כְּבוֹד֑וֹ (his glory)—
וְעָלָה֙ (and it will go up) עַל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) אֲפִיקָ֔יו (its channels)
וְהָלַ֖ךְ (and it will go) עַל־ (over) כָּל־ (all) גְּדוֹתָֽיו׃ (its banks).
8 וְחָלַ֤ף (And it will pass on) בִּֽיהוּדָה֙ (into Judah);
שָׁטַ֣ף (overflowing) וְעָבַ֔ר (and passing over);
עַד־ (to) צַוָּ֖אר (the neck) יַגִּ֑יעַ (reaching),
וְהָיָה֙ (and) מֻטּ֣וֹת (and the stretching out) כְּנָפָ֔יו (of its wings)
מְלֹ֥א (is the fullness) רֹֽחַב־ (of the breadth) אַרְצְךָ֖ (of your land), עִמָּ֥נוּ (O Immanu-) אֵֽל׃ס (el)!
9 רֹ֤עוּ (Join together), עַמִּים֙ (O peoples), וָחֹ֔תּוּ (and be shattered),
וְהַֽאֲזִ֔ינוּ (and give ear) כֹּ֖ל (all) מֶרְחַקֵּי־ (you distant) אָ֑רֶץ (lands).
הִתְאַזְּר֣וּ (Gird yourselves) וָחֹ֔תּוּ (and be shattered);
הִֽתְאַזְּר֖וּ (gird yourselves) וָחֹֽתּוּ׃ (and be shattered)!
10 עֻ֥צוּ (Take counsel) עֵצָ֖ה (counsel) וְתֻפָ֑ר (and it will be broken);
דַּבְּר֤וּ (speak) דָבָר֙ (a word), וְלֹ֣א (not) יָק֔וּם (it will stand),
כִּ֥י (for) עִמָּ֖נוּ (with us) אֵֽל׃ס (God is).
A Call to Fear God
(Ecclesiastes 8:10–13)
11 כִּי֩ (For) כֹ֨ה (thus) אָמַ֧ר (spoke) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֵלַ֖י (to me) כְּחֶזְקַ֣ת (with a strong) הַיָּ֑ד (hand), וְיִסְּרֵ֕נִי (and He admonished me) מִלֶּ֛כֶת (from walking) בְּדֶ֥רֶךְ (in the way) הָֽעָם־ (of the people) הַזֶּ֖ה (this), לֵאמֹֽר׃ (saying):
12 לֹא־ (Not) תֹאמְר֣וּן (shall you⁺ say) קֶ֔שֶׁר (conspiracy)
לְכֹ֧ל (to everything) אֲשֶׁר־ (which) יֹאמַ֛ר (says) הָעָ֥ם (the people) הַזֶּ֖ה (this) קָ֑שֶׁר (is conspiracy);
וְאֶת־ (and) מוֹרָא֥וֹ (its fear), לֹֽא־ (not) תִֽירְא֖וּ (should you⁺ fear)
וְלֹ֥א (and not) תַעֲרִֽיצוּ׃ (dread).
13 אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts)—
אֹת֣וֹ (Him) תַקְדִּ֑ישׁוּ (You⁺ shall sanctify).
וְה֥וּא (And He is) מוֹרַאֲכֶ֖ם (your⁺ Fear),
וְה֥וּא (and He is) מַֽעֲרִֽצְכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ Dread).
14 וְהָיָ֖ה (And He be) לְמִקְדָּ֑שׁ (for a sanctuary),
וּלְאֶ֣בֶן (and for a stone) נֶ֠גֶף (of striking) וּלְצ֨וּר (and for a rock) מִכְשׁ֜וֹל (of falling)
לִשְׁנֵ֨י (for the two) בָתֵּ֤י (houses) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel),
לְפַ֣ח (for a trap) וּלְמוֹקֵ֔שׁ (and for a snare)
לְיוֹשֵׁ֖ב (for the dwellers) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ (of Jerusalem).
15 וְכָ֥שְׁלוּ (And will stumble) בָ֖ם (over them) רַבִּ֑ים (many),
וְנָפְל֣וּ (and they will fall) וְנִשְׁבָּ֔רוּ (and be broken)
וְנוֹקְשׁ֖וּ (and be snared) וְנִלְכָּֽדוּ׃ס (and captured).
16 צ֖וֹר (Bind up) תְּעוּדָ֑ה (the testimony);
חֲת֥וֹם (and seal) תּוֹרָ֖ה (the law) בְּלִמֻּדָֽי׃ (among my disciples).
17 וְחִכִּ֙יתִי֙ (And I will wait) לַיהוָ֔ה (for YHWH),
הַמַּסְתִּ֥יר (the One hiding) פָּנָ֖יו (His face) מִבֵּ֣ית (from the house) יַעֲקֹ֑ב (of Jacob),
וְקִוֵּ֖יתִֽי־ (and I will hope) לֽוֹ׃ (in Him).
18 הִנֵּ֣ה (Here) אָנֹכִ֗י (am I) וְהַיְלָדִים֙ (and the children) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (whom) נָֽתַן־ (has given) לִ֣י (to me) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH), לְאֹת֥וֹת (as signs) וּלְמוֹפְתִ֖ים (and as wonders) בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (in Israel) מֵעִם֙ (from) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts), הַשֹּׁכֵ֖ן (the One dwelling) בְּהַ֥ר (on Mount) צִיּֽוֹן׃ס (Zion).
Darkness and Light
19 וְכִֽי־ (And when) יֹאמְר֣וּ (they say) אֲלֵיכֶ֗ם (to you⁺), דִּרְשׁ֤וּ (Seek) אֶל־ (after) הָאֹבוֹת֙ (the spirits) וְאֶל־ (and after) הַיִּדְּעֹנִ֔ים (the spiritists) הַֽמְצַפְצְפִ֖ים (who whisper) וְהַמַּהְגִּ֑ים (and mutter), הֲלוֹא־ (should not) עַם֙ (a people) אֶל־ (after) אֱלֹהָ֣יו (its gods) יִדְרֹ֔שׁ (seek)? בְּעַ֥ד (On behalf) הַחַיִּ֖ים (of the living) אֶל־ (unto) הַמֵּתִֽים׃ (the dead)?
20 לְתוֹרָ֖ה (To the law) וְלִתְעוּדָ֑ה (and to the testimony)! אִם־ (If) לֹ֤א (not) יֹֽאמְרוּ֙ (they do speak) כַּדָּבָ֣ר (according to the word) הַזֶּ֔ה (this), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (it is because) אֵֽין־ (there is not) ל֖וֹ (in them) שָֽׁחַר׃ (dawn).
21 וְעָ֥בַר (And he will pass over) בָּ֖הּ (into it) נִקְשֶׁ֣ה (hard pressed) וְרָעֵ֑ב (and hungry), וְהָיָ֨ה (and it will be that) כִֽי־ (when) יִרְעַ֜ב (he is hungry) וְהִתְקַצַּ֗ף (and becomes angry) וְקִלֵּ֧ל (and he will think little) בְּמַלְכּ֛וֹ (of his king) וּבֵאלֹהָ֖יו (and of his gods), וּפָנָ֥ה (and he will turn) לְמָֽעְלָה׃ (upward),
22 וְאֶל־ (and to) אֶ֖רֶץ (the earth) יַבִּ֑יט (will look), וְהִנֵּ֨ה (and behold), צָרָ֤ה (distress) וַחֲשֵׁכָה֙ (and darkness), מְע֣וּף (gloom) צוּקָ֔ה (of anguish); וַאֲפֵלָ֖ה (and into the dark) מְנֻדָּֽח׃ (he will be driven away).
