1But I determined this for my own sake, that I would not come to you in sorrow again.1Ἔκρινα γὰρ* ἐμαυτῷ τοῦτο τὸ μὴ πάλιν ἐν λύπῃ πρὸς ὑμᾶς ἐλθεῖν
2For if I cause you sorrow, who then makes me glad but the one whom I made sorrowful?2εἰ γὰρ ἐγὼ λυπῶ ὑμᾶς καὶ τίς ὁ εὐφραίνων με εἰ μὴ ὁ λυπούμενος ἐξ ἐμοῦ
3This is the very thing I wrote you, so that when I came, I would not have sorrow from those who ought to make me rejoice; having confidence in you all that my joy would be the joy of you all.3καὶ ἔγραψα τοῦτο αὐτὸ ἵνα μὴ ἐλθὼν λύπην σχῶ ἀφ’ ὧν ἔδει με χαίρειν πεποιθὼς ἐπὶ πάντας ὑμᾶς ὅτι ἡ ἐμὴ χαρὰ πάντων ὑμῶν ἐστιν
4For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you with many tears; not so that you would be made sorrowful, but that you might know the love which I have especially for you.4ἐκ γὰρ πολλῆς θλίψεως καὶ συνοχῆς καρδίας ἔγραψα ὑμῖν διὰ πολλῶν δακρύων οὐχ ἵνα λυπηθῆτε ἀλλὰ τὴν ἀγάπην ἵνα γνῶτε ἣν ἔχω περισσοτέρως εἰς ὑμᾶς
5But if any has caused sorrow, he has caused sorrow not to me, but in some degree-- in order not to say too much-- to all of you.5Εἰ δέ τις λελύπηκεν οὐκ ἐμὲ λελύπηκεν ἀλλὰ ἀπὸ μέρους ἵνα μὴ ἐπιβαρῶ πάντας ὑμᾶς
6Sufficient for such a one is this punishment which was inflicted by the majority,6ἱκανὸν τῷ τοιούτῳ ἡ ἐπιτιμία αὕτη ἡ ὑπὸ τῶν πλειόνων
7so that on the contrary you should rather forgive and comfort him, otherwise such a one might be overwhelmed by excessive sorrow.7ὥστε τοὐναντίον μᾶλλον ὑμᾶς χαρίσασθαι καὶ παρακαλέσαι μή πως τῇ περισσοτέρᾳ λύπῃ καταποθῇ ὁ τοιοῦτος
8Wherefore I urge you to reaffirm your love for him.8διὸ παρακαλῶ ὑμᾶς κυρῶσαι εἰς αὐτὸν ἀγάπην
9For to this end also I wrote, so that I might put you to the test, whether you are obedient in all things.9Εἰς τοῦτο γὰρ καὶ ἔγραψα ἵνα γνῶ τὴν δοκιμὴν ὑμῶν εἰ εἰς πάντα ὑπήκοοί ἐστε
10But one whom you forgive anything, I forgive also; for indeed what I have forgiven, if I have forgiven anything, I did it for your sakes in the presence of Christ,10ᾧ δέ τι χαρίζεσθε κἀγώ καὶ γὰρ ἐγὼ ὃ κεχάρισμαι εἴ τι κεχάρισμαι δι’ ὑμᾶς ἐν προσώπῳ Χριστοῦ
11so that no advantage would be taken of us by Satan, for we are not ignorant of his schemes.11ἵνα μὴ πλεονεκτηθῶμεν ὑπὸ τοῦ Σατανᾶ οὐ γὰρ αὐτοῦ τὰ νοήματα ἀγνοοῦμεν
12Now when I came to Troas for the gospel of Christ and when a door was opened for me in the Lord,12Ἐλθὼν δὲ εἰς τὴν Τρῳάδα εἰς τὸ εὐαγγέλιον τοῦ Χριστοῦ καὶ θύρας μοι ἀνεῳγμένης ἐν Κυρίῳ
13I had no rest for my spirit, not finding Titus my brother; but taking my leave of them, I went on to Macedonia.13οὐκ ἔσχηκα ἄνεσιν τῷ πνεύματί μου τῷ μὴ εὑρεῖν με Τίτον τὸν ἀδελφόν μου ἀλλὰ ἀποταξάμενος αὐτοῖς ἐξῆλθον εἰς Μακεδονίαν
14But thanks be to God, who always leads us in triumph in Christ, and manifests through us the sweet aroma of the knowledge of Him in every place.14Τῷ δὲ Θεῷ χάρις τῷ πάντοτε θριαμβεύοντι ἡμᾶς ἐν τῷ Χριστῷ καὶ τὴν ὀσμὴν τῆς γνώσεως αὐτοῦ φανεροῦντι δι’ ἡμῶν ἐν παντὶ τόπῳ
15For we are a fragrance of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing;15ὅτι Χριστοῦ εὐωδία ἐσμὲν τῷ Θεῷ ἐν τοῖς σωζομένοις καὶ ἐν τοῖς ἀπολλυμένοις
16to the one an aroma from death to death, to the other an aroma from life to life. And who is adequate for these things?16οἷς μὲν ὀσμὴ ἐκ θανάτου εἰς θάνατον οἷς δὲ ὀσμὴ ἐκ ζωῆς εἰς ζωήν καὶ πρὸς ταῦτα τίς ἱκανός
17For we are not like many, peddling the word of God, but as from sincerity, but as from God, we speak in Christ in the sight of God.17Οὐ γάρ ἐσμεν ὡς οἱ πολλοὶ καπηλεύοντες τὸν λόγον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἀλλ’ ὡς ἐξ εἰλικρινείας ἀλλ’ ὡς ἐκ Θεοῦ κατέναντι Θεοῦ ἐν Χριστῷ λαλοῦμεν
