Azarel, whose name means “God has helped,” served as the tribal leader of Dan under David’s administration. His identification as Jeroham’s son preserves the family lineage that established his place within the tribe. Dan, descended from Jacob’s son by Bilhah, had a troubled history marked by idolatry and migration, yet it remained part of Israel and received representation in the nation’s leadership.

Num 7:66 On the tenth day Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai,…
Num 34:22 Bukki son of Jogli, a leader from the tribe of Dan;
Num 1:12 from Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai;

These were the leaders of the tribes of Israel.

David’s tribal officers provided oversight for the twelve tribes, helping maintain order, organize resources, and support the kingdom’s military and civil responsibilities. Their appointment recognized both the distinct identity of each tribe and their united place under the covenant people of God.

Num 1:16 These men were appointed from the congregation;…
Num 7:2 And the leaders of Israel, the heads of their families,…
Num 34:18 Appoint one leader from each tribe to distribute the land.

David did not count the men aged twenty or under,

The census concerned men eligible for military service, following Israel’s established practice of numbering those twenty years old and above. Those below that age were not included among the nation’s fighting strength.

Num 1:3 You and Aaron are to number those who are twenty years old…
Num 26:2 Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel…
2Ch 25:5 Then Amaziah gathered the people of Judah…

because the LORD had said

David recognized that Israel’s growth rested on God’s promise rather than on the results of a census. The nation belonged to the Lord, and its strength could not be measured merely by human records.

Gen 17:2 I will establish My covenant between Me and you…
Gen 12:2 I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you;…
Gen 13:16 I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth…

that He would make Israel as numerous as the stars of the sky.

God had promised to multiply Israel beyond ordinary calculation. David’s decision reflects confidence that the Lord would fulfill His covenant promise to increase the people of Israel.

Gen 15:5 And the LORD took him outside and said, “Now look…
Gen 22:17 I will surely bless you, and I will multiply…
Gen 26:4 I will make your descendants as numerous as the stars…

Joab son of Zeruiah began to count the men but did not finish.

Joab, David’s nephew and commander of the army, carried out the king’s order despite warning David against it. The census was intended to measure Israel’s military strength, but it revealed David’s reliance on human power rather than the Lord. Joab’s failure to complete the count reflects his reluctance and the disruption caused by God’s judgment.

1Ch 21:2-6 So David said to Joab and the commanders of the troops…
2Sa 24:2-4 So the king said to Joab the commander of his army,…
2Sa 24:8-9 At the end of nine months and twenty days, …

For because of this census wrath came upon Israel,

God punished the nation for David’s sinful command by sending a plague. Though David bore responsibility for ordering the census, Israel also suffered under the consequences of the king’s disobedience. The judgment showed that the security of the kingdom rested on God’s favor, not the size of its army.

2Sa 24:1 Again the anger of the LORD burned against Israel,…
1Ch 21:7 This command was also evil in the sight of God;…
2Sa 24:15 So the LORD sent a plague upon Israel from that morning…

and the number was not entered in the Book of the Chronicles of King David.

The incomplete census was not preserved among the official records of David’s reign. Its omission marked it as a shameful and rejected act rather than an achievement worthy of remembrance.

1Ch 29:29 Now the acts of King David, from first to last,…
1Ki 14:29 As for the rest of the acts of Rehoboam,…
2Ki 20:20 As for the rest of the acts of Hezekiah…

Ahithophel served David as a trusted adviser whose counsel carried exceptional weight in the royal court. During Absalom’s rebellion, he abandoned David and joined the rebel cause, urging a swift attack against the king. When his counsel was rejected, Ahithophel recognized that Absalom’s cause would fail and took his own life. His betrayal contributed to the conflict that divided David’s household and kingdom.
