Berean Study Bible The Living Stone and Chosen PeopleBecause believers have been given new life through the enduring word of God, they are to put away practices belonging to their former way of life. The command calls for deliberate rejection of attitudes and actions that disrupt fellowship and contradict holy conduct. Jas 1:21 Therefore, get rid of all moral filth… of all malice, Malice includes every form of ill will, resentment, and desire to injure another. Such hostility threatened the unity of congregations already facing pressure from the surrounding world. Col 3:8 But now you must put aside anger, rage, malice… deceit, Deceit corrupts trust through dishonesty, manipulation, and concealed motives. God’s people were to deal openly and truthfully with one another. Psa 34:13 Keep your tongue from evil and your lips… hypocrisy, Hypocrisy describes outward religious appearance that conceals a different inner condition. It produces a false community in which people cannot rely on one another’s profession or conduct. Mat 23:27-28 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites!… envy, Envy resents the blessings, abilities, or standing of others. It turns fellow believers into rivals and breeds division rather than shared joy. Gal 5:26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying… and slander. Slander damages others through harmful speech, whether false accusations, distorted reports, or destructive gossip. These sins were to be removed so that the churches could live in sincerity, peace, and mutual care. Psa 101:5 Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret,… Like newborn babies, New believers, having been brought into new life through Christ, depend on God for the nourishment needed to live faithfully. The image stresses humility, dependence, and the beginning of spiritual growth. 1Pe 1:23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed,… crave pure spiritual milk, Believers are to earnestly seek the uncorrupted truth of God’s Word rather than the deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander rejected in the preceding verses. Sound teaching sustains faith and guards the church from error. Heb 5:12-14 Although by this time you ought to be teachers,… so that by it you may grow up in your salvation, Salvation begins with God’s saving work and continues as believers are sanctified, growing in obedience, discernment, and likeness to Christ. Eph 4:13-15 until we all reach unity in the faith… now that you have tasted Peter addresses believers who have personally received God’s saving grace. Their faith was not merely inherited or intellectual; they had come to know the mercy given through Christ and were therefore to set aside sinful conduct and grow in spiritual maturity. Heb 6:5 who have tasted the goodness of the word of God… that the Lord is good. God’s goodness is revealed in His mercy toward sinners and in the salvation provided through Jesus Christ. Having received that goodness, believers are called to continue drawing near to Christ, the living Stone, and to live as His people. Psa 34:8 Taste and see that the LORD is good; blessed is the man… As you come to Him, Believers continually draw near to Jesus in faith, dependence, and obedience. Christian life begins with receiving Him and continues in fellowship with Him. Jhn 6:37 Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me,… the living stone, Jesus Christ, though crucified, rose bodily from the dead and lives forever. He is the firm foundation God established for His people and the church. Psa 118:22 The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. rejected by men Israel’s leaders and many others refused to receive Jesus as the promised Messiah. Their rejection led to His condemnation and crucifixion, though it unfolded within God’s redemptive purpose. Isa 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows… but chosen and precious in God’s sight, God the Father appointed His Son for the work of salvation and honored Him above all. Human rejection did not alter Christ’s identity, worth, or authority as the cornerstone of God’s people. Isa 42:1 Here is My Servant, whom I uphold, My Chosen One,… you also, Gentile believers are included with Jewish believers in God’s redeemed people, united in Christ as one community. Eph 2:19 Therefore you are no longer strangers and foreigners,… like living stones, Believers share in the life of Christ, the living Stone rejected by men and chosen by God. Unlike the stones of the Jerusalem temple, they are living members of God’s people. Psa 118:22 The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. are being built into a spiritual house God is continually forming the church as His dwelling place through the Holy Spirit. The physical temple pointed forward to this greater spiritual reality. Eph 2:21-22 In Him the whole building is fitted together… to be a holy priesthood, All who belong to Christ are set apart for God’s service and have access to Him through their great High Priest. Exo 19:5-6 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,… offering spiritual sacrifices Their worship, prayers, obedience, praise, and service are offered to God in place of the animal sacrifices required under the old covenant. Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy,… acceptable to God Such offerings please God when they come from faith and obedience rather than mere outward ritual. Heb 11:4 By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did.… through Jesus Christ. Christ alone brings believers to God and makes their worship acceptable through His sacrifice and mediation. Eph 2:18 For through Him we both have access to the Father… For it stands in Scripture: Peter grounds his teaching in the enduring authority of God’s written Word, drawing from the Old Testament to show that God’s plan in Christ was established long before His coming. 2Ti 3:16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction,… “See, I lay in Zion a stone, God Himself placed this foundation in Zion, Jerusalem, the center of Israel’s worship and the city from which the Messiah’s kingdom would be revealed. Isa 28:16 So this is what the Lord GOD says: “See, I lay a stone… a chosen and precious cornerstone; Jesus Christ is the cornerstone chosen by the Father. As the foundation of God’s people, He gives order, unity, and security to all who belong to Him. Eph 2:20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets… and the one who believes in Him will never be put to shame.” Those who trust in Christ will not be disappointed or condemned in the end. Though rejected by many, He is God’s appointed Savior, and all who rest their faith in Him will be vindicated. Rom 10:11 It is just as the Scripture says: “Anyone who believes… To you who believe, then, this stone is precious. Jesus Christ is the sure foundation of salvation and the life of God’s people. Though rejected by the world, He is honored by those who trust in Him and recognize His authority. Isa 28:16 So this is what the Lord GOD says: “See, I lay a stone… But to those who do not believe, Those who reject Christ do not see His worth or submit to His rule. Their unbelief places them in opposition to the One appointed by God. Jhn 3:18 Whoever believes in Him is not condemned,… “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone,” Israel’s religious leaders rejected Jesus as the Messiah, yet God raised and exalted Him as the indispensable foundation of His redemptive plan. What men cast aside has become central to God’s work of salvation. Psa 118:22 The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. and, “A stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.” Jesus Christ, rejected by many of Israel’s leaders and people, is the sure foundation for those who believe but a cause of ruin for those who refuse Him. His person and message expose unbelief, making Him offensive to those who will not submit to God. Isa 8:14 And He will be a sanctuary—but to both houses of Israel… They stumble because they disobey the word— Their fall results from willful rejection of the gospel. They refuse the truth God has revealed in Christ and therefore fail to receive the salvation He provides. Rom 10:16 But not all of them welcomed the good news.… and to this they were appointed. God has ordained judgment as the righteous outcome of unbelief. His sovereignty does not make them innocent of their rejection; they are accountable for disobeying His word. Rom 9:17-18 For the Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up”… But you are a chosen people, God has formed believers into a people belonging to Him through faith in Christ. Peter applies to the church titles once given to Israel, showing that God’s saving purpose now gathers Jew and Gentile into one covenant community. Deu 7:6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God.… a royal priesthood, United to Christ the King and High Priest, believers have access to God and are called to serve Him. They offer spiritual sacrifices through obedient lives, prayer, praise, and service. Exo 19:6 And unto Me you shall be a kingdom of priests… a holy nation, God’s people are set apart from the world to reflect His character. Their shared identity is not based on earthly ancestry or political boundaries, but on their relationship to Christ and their calling to live in holiness, set apart for God’s purposes. Deu 14:2 for you are a people holy to the LORD your God.… a people for God’s own possession, Those redeemed by Christ belong to God in a special way. He has purchased them at the cost of Christ’s blood, claiming them as His treasured people and keeping them under His care. Tit 2:14 He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness… to proclaim the virtues of Him God saves His people so that they may openly declare His greatness, mercy, and mighty works. Their testimony includes both the message of the gospel and lives that display its transforming power. Psa 96:3 Declare His glory among the nations, His wonders… who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light. Before Christ, people live under sin, spiritual blindness, and separation from God. Through His call, believers are brought into the light of truth, forgiveness, and new life in Him. Act 26:18 open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness… Once you were not a people, Those formerly outside God’s covenant blessings were alienated from His people and without a recognized place among those who belonged to Him. Peter applies Hosea’s language of judgment and restoration to believers now gathered into Christ’s people. Hos 1:9 And the LORD said, “Name him Lo-ammi,… but now you are the people of God; Through faith in Christ, Jews and Gentiles alike are united as God’s covenant people. They share in the promises fulfilled through Christ and belong to the church He has redeemed. Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.… once you had not received mercy, Apart from Christ, they remained under sin and separated from God’s favor, unable to obtain forgiveness by their own efforts. Hos 1:6 Gomer again conceived and gave birth to a daughter,… but now you have received mercy. God has granted forgiveness and reconciliation through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ. Their standing before God rests on His mercy, not on ethnic heritage, works, or human merit. Hos 2:23 And I will sow her as My own in the land… Beloved, Peter addresses his readers with genuine pastoral affection as fellow members of God’s family. Their faith unites them despite their scattered circumstances and social pressures. 1Jn 4:7 Beloved, let us love one another, because love comes from God.… I urge you, The apostle gives a serious appeal grounded in his authority and concern for their faithfulness. Christian conduct matters because it bears witness to the reality of salvation. Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy,… as foreigners and exiles, Believers live in earthly societies without making them their ultimate home. Like Israel living among the nations, they belong to God and await the fullness of His promised kingdom. Heb 11:13 All these people died in faith, without having received… to abstain from the desires of the flesh, They must refuse sinful impulses that arise from fallen human nature. Such desires seek satisfaction apart from God and lead His people away from holy conduct. Gal 5:16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not… which war against your soul. Sin is not harmless or private; it actively opposes spiritual life and seeks to damage the whole person. Peter calls believers to recognize this continuing conflict and to live according to their identity as God’s people. Jas 4:1 What causes conflicts and quarrels among you?… Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles Believers lived as a distinct minority within pagan society and were to display integrity, purity, humility, and love before those outside the faith. Their manner of life was to show that the gospel produced genuine moral transformation. 1Th 4:12 Then you will behave properly toward outsiders… that, though they slander you as evildoers, Christians were often viewed with suspicion because they rejected idolatry, refused emperor worship, and gathered privately for worship. False accusations and hostility followed, as they had for Christ. 1Pe 3:16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who slander you… they may see your good deeds A consistent pattern of mercy, service, honesty, and holiness exposed the falsehood of such charges. Public conduct could not replace faith, but it provided visible evidence of faith’s reality. Mat 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men,… and glorify God on the day He visits us. God’s visitation includes His decisive coming in judgment and salvation. Those who had witnessed believers’ faithful lives might turn to God and glorify Him, while all will ultimately acknowledge His righteousness. 2Th 1:10 on the day He comes to be glorified in His saints…
Submission to AuthoritiesSubmission to civil authority is part of a believer’s obedience to God and should reflect a desire to honor Him in public life. Eph 5:21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. to every human institution, God uses governing structures, courts, and civic authorities to restrain wrongdoing and preserve order in a fallen world, even though those institutions remain imperfect. Rom 13:1 Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities… whether to the king as the supreme authority, Peter wrote under the Roman Empire, where the emperor held the highest civil power. Christians were to respect that office and obey lawful commands while reserving worship and ultimate loyalty for God alone. Ecc 8:2-4 Keep the king’s command, I say, because of your oath… or to governors Roman governors administered imperial provinces, upheld public order, collected taxes, and exercised judicial authority as representatives of Rome. Luk 3:1 In the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar… as those sent by him Their authority came through the emperor’s appointment, yet their governing role operated under God’s sovereign rule. Jhn 19:11 Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me”… to punish those who do wrong Civil rulers were charged with restraining crime and judging those who violated the law, helping preserve peace and protect the innocent. Rom 13:4 For he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong,… and to praise those who do right. Authorities could also recognize conduct that benefited the public good. Christians were therefore to live honorably within society, giving no rightful cause for accusation. Rom 13:3 For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad.… For it is God’s will God intends believers to live in a manner that reflects obedience to Him, especially when they face suspicion, hostility, or unjust treatment. Peter writes to Christians scattered across Roman provinces, where their faith often brought public misunderstanding. 1Th 5:18 Give thanks in every circumstance, for this is… that by doing good Faithful conduct included honoring lawful authority, serving others, and maintaining integrity in daily life. Such visible obedience showed that Christians were not rebels or evildoers, despite the accusations made against them. Gal 6:9 Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time…… you should silence the ignorance Consistent good works answered slander more effectively than argument. When accusations could not be supported by a believer’s conduct, hostile claims were exposed as uninformed and false. Tit 2:8 and wholesome speech that is above reproach… of foolish men. Those spreading such charges lacked spiritual discernment and judged Christians by rumor, prejudice, or fear. God’s people were to respond not with retaliation, but with lives that displayed the truth of the Gospel. Rom 1:21-22 For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him… Live in freedom, Christ has freed believers from sin’s dominion and the condemnation of the law. This liberty is spiritual, grounded in the new life God gives, not in changing political or social circumstances. Gal 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.… but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; Christian freedom cannot excuse sin, hypocrisy, or rebellion against God’s commands. Some in the early church faced pressure from both pagan culture and legalistic teachers, making it necessary to distinguish genuine liberty from self-indulgence. Gal 5:13 For you, brothers, were called to freedom;… live as servants of God. Believers are free from slavery to sin in order to belong wholly to God. In a Roman world familiar with slavery, the image conveyed complete loyalty and obedience. Such service follows the pattern of Christ, who willingly humbled Himself to accomplish the Father’s will. Rom 6:18 You have been set free from sin and have become… Treat everyone with high regard: Every person bears God’s image and is therefore to be treated with dignity, regardless of social rank, ethnicity, wealth, or status. In a Roman society sharply divided between citizens, foreigners, slaves, and elites, Christians were to show honorable conduct toward all. Rom 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.… Love the brotherhood of believers, Believers share a spiritual family bond through faith in Christ. This love calls for practical care, unity, and steadfast support, especially as early Christians faced hostility and exclusion from surrounding society. Heb 13:1 Continue in brotherly love. fear God, God alone receives the profound reverence and respect owed to the supreme ruler and judge of all people, acknowledging His sovereignty and holiness. Reverence for Him shapes obedience, humility, and a proper view of every human authority. Ecc 12:13 When all has been heard, the conclusion of the matter… honor the king. Christians were to show respect to the Roman emperor and governing officials, even when rulers were unjust or hostile to the faith. Such honor did not require obedience to sinful commands, since God’s authority remains above every earthly power. Rom 13:7 Pay everyone what you owe him: taxes to whom taxes are due,… Servants, submit yourselves to your masters with all respect, Household slaves and servants formed a large part of Roman society. Peter addresses believers living under that established system, commanding respectful conduct without approving slavery or excusing a master’s wrongdoing. Their obedience was to reflect reverence for God and preserve a faithful witness within the household. 1Ti 6:1 All who are under the yoke of slavery… not only to those who are good and gentle, Kind and fair masters made service less burdensome, and respectful submission to them was expected. Col 4:1 Masters, supply your slaves with what is right… but even to those who are unreasonable. Some masters were harsh, unjust, or difficult to serve. Christian servants were not to answer mistreatment with rebellion or retaliation, but to endure wrongdoing in a manner shaped by Christ’s own unjust suffering. Mat 5:44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray… For if anyone endures the pain of unjust suffering Believers in Peter’s day could suffer mistreatment from masters, neighbors, or authorities because of their faith. Such suffering was not always the result of wrongdoing. Christ Himself was falsely accused, abused, and crucified though He had committed no sin. 1Pe 3:14 But even if you should suffer for what is right,… because he is conscious of God, Endurance is possible when a believer lives with reverence for God and confidence in His rule. God sees injustice, knows the heart, and will judge righteously. This awareness enables the believer to remain faithful rather than retaliate or abandon obedience. 1Pe 3:15-16 But in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord.… this is to be commended. God regards patient endurance under undeserved suffering as pleasing. Human authorities may overlook or even cause such injustice, but God honors those who suffer while continuing to do what is right. 2Co 10:18 For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved,… How is it to your credit if you are beaten for doing wrong and you endure it? Servants who committed offenses could expect punishment under Roman household and legal customs, often including physical beatings. Patiently accepting deserved punishment did not demonstrate unusual virtue, since it followed misconduct. 1Pe 4:15 Indeed, none of you should suffer as a murderer or thief… But if you suffer for doing good and you endure it, Believers sometimes faced abuse, loss, and public hostility because their conduct and allegiance to Christ differed from surrounding society. Such suffering was unjust, yet they were called to endure without abandoning faithful obedience. Mat 5:10-12 Blessed are those who are persecuted,… this is commendable before God. God approves those who remain steadfast when they suffer for righteousness rather than for evil. Their endurance reflects Christ, who suffered unjustly while remaining obedient to the Father. Heb 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God.…
Christ’s Example of SufferingBelievers are called not only to salvation but also to faithful endurance when obedience brings hardship. Peter writes to Christians facing hostility and unjust treatment, reminding them that suffering for doing good is not outside God’s purpose. Php 1:29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ… because Christ also suffered for you, Jesus willingly endured rejection, abuse, and crucifixion to bear sin and secure redemption for His people. His suffering was not meaningless or accidental; it fulfilled God’s saving plan and demonstrated His obedience to the Father. 1Pe 3:18 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all,… leaving you an example, Christ’s conduct under suffering sets the pattern for those who belong to Him. He did not answer evil with evil or abandon righteousness when treated unjustly. Jhn 13:15 I have set you an example so that you should do as I have… that you should follow in His footsteps: Christians are to imitate Christ’s humility, obedience, patience, and trust in God, especially when facing opposition for living according to His will. 1Jn 2:6 Whoever claims to abide in Him must walk as Jesus walked. “He committed no sin, Jesus alone lived in complete obedience to the Father. Though He suffered unjust accusation, rejection, and death, He never participated in wrongdoing. His innocence made Him the spotless sacrifice who bore the sins of others. 1Jn 3:5 But you know that Christ appeared to take away sins… and no deceit was found in His mouth.” Jesus spoke truthfully before crowds, religious leaders, Pilate, and His accusers. He did not answer violence with manipulation or falsehood. Even in suffering, His words and conduct revealed the righteousness of the Servant who willingly gave Himself for sinners. Isa 53:9 He was assigned a grave with the wicked,… When they heaped abuse on Him, Jesus endured mockery, spitting, blows, and insults from Jewish leaders and Roman soldiers during His trial and crucifixion. Though innocent, He was treated as a condemned criminal and publicly humiliated. Mat 27:39-44 And those who passed by heaped abuse on Him,… He did not retaliate; He neither answered insult with insult nor resisted those who abused Him. His restraint showed His willing submission to the Father’s purpose rather than weakness or inability to defend Himself. Isa 53:7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open… when He suffered, His suffering included scourging, crucifixion, rejection, and the bearing of sin. He willingly endured what was necessary to accomplish redemption. Isa 53:4-5 Surely He took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows… He made no threats, Jesus did not use His authority to intimidate or destroy His persecutors. Even while suffering injustice, He remained faithful to His mission. Jhn 18:10-11 Then Simon Peter drew his sword and struck the servant… but entrusted Himself to Him who judges justly. He placed His cause in the hands of God the Father, who sees every wrong and judges with perfect righteousness. Psa 31:5 Into Your hands I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me… He Himself bore our sins in His body on the tree, Jesus willingly carried the guilt and judgment of human sin in His crucified body. His death was a real, physical sacrifice, not merely an example of suffering. By being nailed to the cross, He bore the curse sin deserved and fulfilled God’s saving purpose through the suffering of the Messiah. Heb 9:28 so also Christ was offered once to bear the sins… so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. Christ’s sacrifice frees believers from sin’s former rule and calls them into a changed life. Those united with Him are no longer to live under sin’s power but are to pursue obedience, holiness, and conduct that reflects God’s righteousness. Rom 6:2 Certainly not! How can we who died to sin… “By His stripes you are healed.” The wounds Jesus received in His scourging and crucifixion brought healing from the spiritual ruin caused by sin. Through His suffering, believers are reconciled to God and restored to life under His care, with the full completion of that restoration awaiting God’s final renewal. Isa 53:5 But He was pierced for our transgressions,… For “you were like sheep going astray,” Sheep readily wander and are unable to find safety or food without a shepherd’s care. The image describes humanity’s condition apart from Christ: separated from God, following self-directed paths, and exposed to spiritual danger through sin. Isa 53:6 We all like sheep have gone astray, each one has turned… but now you have returned Through repentance and faith, believers have turned from their former way of life to God. Their return is made possible by Christ’s saving work, bringing restoration to those who had been estranged from Him. Luk 15:17-20 Finally he came to his senses and said, … to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. Jesus personally guides, protects, and sustains His people as their Shepherd, caring for His flock. As Overseer, He watches over their souls with rightful authority and responsibility, preserving those who belong to Him. Jhn 10:11 I am the good shepherd.
