Mourning and Burial for Jacob

Then Joseph fell upon his father’s face,

Joseph’s immediate response to Jacob’s death reveals the depth of their restored relationship. Though years of separation and suffering had marked their lives, Joseph had remained devoted to his father and now grieved at his bedside.

Gen 46:29 Joseph prepared his chariot and went there…
1Sa 20:41 Then he and Jonathan kissed each other and wept together…

wept over him,

His tears were the sorrow of a son who had lost the father through whom God had preserved the covenant family. Jacob’s death also marked the passing of the last patriarch who had personally carried the promises given to Abraham and Isaac.

Act 8:2 God-fearing men buried Stephen and mourned deeply over him.

and kissed him.

Joseph’s final embrace expressed love, honor, and farewell. As Jacob’s favored son and the ruler responsible for the family’s protection in Egypt, Joseph mourned not only as a public leader but as a devoted son.

Act 20:37 They all wept openly as they embraced Paul and kissed him.
Gen 33:4 Esau, however, ran to him and embraced him…

And Joseph directed the physicians in his service

Joseph’s authority in Egypt extended to the royal physicians, whose skills included the preparation of bodies for burial. His position enabled him to provide for his father with the resources of the Egyptian court.

Jacob’s body was preserved so it could be carried safely to Canaan and buried in the family tomb, according to his expressed request. Though embalming followed Egyptian custom, Joseph used it to honor his father’s commitment to burial in the land promised to Abraham.

When the Canaanites of the land saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad,

The Canaanites, inhabitants of the land promised to Abraham’s descendants, witnessed an unusually large and public display of grief. A threshing floor provided an open gathering place, allowing the Egyptian procession and its mourning rites to be seen by the surrounding population. The scale of the event showed the honor given to Jacob and reflected Joseph’s authority in Egypt.

Joseph Comforts His Brothers

When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father was dead,

Jacob’s death removed the family’s aging patriarch and left the brothers fearful that Joseph’s restraint had depended on respect for their father. Though the family had been reunited in Egypt, the memory of their betrayal remained unsettled in their consciences.

Gen 27:41 Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessing…
Gen 45:3 Joseph said to his brothers, “I am Joseph!”…
Gen 42:21 Then they said to one another, “Surely we are being punished…

they said, “What if Joseph bears a grudge?

Years had passed since Joseph forgave them, yet they still expected retaliation. Their fear showed that they understood the seriousness of selling Joseph into slavery and deceiving their father.

Pro 17:9 Whoever conceals an offense promotes love,…
Col 3:13 Bear with one another and forgive any complaint…

Then he will surely repay us for all the evil that we did to him.”

The brothers rightly called their actions evil. They expected Joseph to answer wrong with punishment, but Joseph had come to see that God had sovereignly used their sin to preserve the family during the famine.

Gen 37:28 So when the Midianite traders passed by, his brothers…
Pro 24:29 I will do to him as he has done to me; I will repay the man…
Rom 12:17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Carefully consider…

So they sent word to Joseph, saying,

Jacob’s death stirred renewed fear in Joseph’s brothers. Though Joseph had forgiven them, they feared he might now seek revenge. Rather than approach him directly, they sent a message intended to appeal to his loyalty to their father and preserve peace within the family.

The brothers do not deny the injury they caused. Though many years had passed, the consequences of their betrayal remained present in their minds.

Gen 37:18-28 Now Joseph’s brothers saw him in the distance,…
Gen 42:21-22 Then they said to one another, “Surely we are being punished…
Gen 45:4-5 Then Joseph said to his brothers, “Please come near me.”…

So now, Joseph, please forgive the transgression of the servants of the God of your father.”

By identifying themselves as servants of their father’s God, they appeal to the covenant faith shared by Joseph and their family. Their words reflect a desire to preserve the family God had chosen and sustained.

Job 42:8-10 So now, take seven bulls and seven rams…
Col 3:13 Bear with one another and forgive any complaint…

When their message came to him, Joseph wept.

Joseph’s tears reveal the pain of the past and his compassion for his brothers. Their continued fear showed that they had not fully understood the forgiveness he had already extended to them.

Gen 45:1-2 Then Joseph could no longer control himself…
Gen 42:24 And he turned away from them and wept. When he turned back,…
Gen 43:30-31 Joseph hurried out because he was moved to tears…

His brothers also came to him,

After Jacob’s death, Joseph’s brothers feared that he might repay them for selling him into slavery. Their approach reveals that they still carried the weight of their earlier sin and doubted the permanence of Joseph’s forgiveness.

Gen 42:6 Now Joseph was the ruler of the land; …
Gen 44:14 When Judah and his brothers arrived at Joseph’s house,…
Gen 43:26 When Joseph came home, they presented him with the gifts…

bowed down before him,

Their bowing fulfilled the dreams Joseph had received in his youth, when his brothers’ sheaves bowed before his own. What they had once resented came to pass under God’s providence, as Joseph’s exalted position in Egypt became the means of preserving their family.

Gen 43:28 “Your servant our father is well,” they answered.…
Gen 37:7 We were binding sheaves of grain in the field, …
Gen 37:9 Then Joseph had another dream and told it to his brothers.…

and said, “We are your slaves!”

The brothers offered themselves as servants in recognition of Joseph’s authority and their guilt against him. Their words also underscore the reversal brought about through Joseph’s suffering: the brother they had sold as a slave now held power over them, yet he responded with mercy rather than revenge.

Gen 44:9 If any of your servants is found to have it,…
Gen 44:16 “What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied.…
Gen 44:33 Now please let your servant stay here as my lord’s slave…

But Joseph replied,

After Jacob’s death, Joseph’s brothers feared he would repay them for selling him into slavery. Joseph had already forgiven them and recognized that their betrayal had not overturned God’s purpose for his life or for Israel’s preservation during the famine.

Joseph pledged to supply food and protection for his brothers’ households during the continuing hardship in the land. His promise secured the family through whom God’s covenant purposes would continue.

So Joseph reassured his brothers

The Death of Joseph

Now Joseph and his father’s household remained in Egypt,

Joseph used the authority God had given him to preserve Jacob’s family during the famine. Their settlement in Egypt fulfilled God’s earlier warning that Abraham’s descendants would live as foreigners in another land. What began as refuge from famine would become the setting for Israel’s growth into a great nation and, later, their oppression and deliverance.

and Joseph lived to the age of 110

Joseph died after a full and honored life in Egypt. His years included betrayal, slavery, imprisonment, exaltation, and the rescue of his family, yet God’s purpose continued through every stage. He lived long enough to see his family established in Egypt and the covenant line preserved.

He saw Ephraim’s sons to the third generation,

Joseph lived to see his great-grandchildren through Ephraim, a mark of long life and the flourishing of the family God had preserved in Egypt. Jacob’s blessing upon Ephraim was already being fulfilled as Joseph’s descendants increased.

Joseph received these children as members of his household and shared in their care during his final years. Surrounded by his descendants, he witnessed God’s faithfulness to the family He had promised would become a great nation.

Joseph speaks to the sons of Jacob, the fathers of Israel’s tribes, near the end of his life. Though they had once betrayed him, God had brought reconciliation to the family and preserved them through the famine.

Joseph trusted that God would intervene for His people and bring them out of Egypt at the appointed time. Though he died in Egypt, he looked beyond the present security of his family to God’s promised future.

So Joseph died at the age of 110

In Egypt, 110 years was regarded as an especially full and honored lifespan. Joseph’s long life reflects the favor of God upon him and closes the patriarchal account with the family preserved in Egypt, awaiting the fulfillment of God’s promise to bring them back to Canaan.
