Isaiah 19
Berean Study Bible

The Burden against Egypt

This is the burden against Egypt:

God announces judgment against Egypt, a major regional power long connected with Israel through conflict, trade, refuge, and political alliances. Its strength and influence would not shield it from the Lord’s decree.

Jer 46:2 concerning Egypt and the army of Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt…
Ezk 29:1-2 In the tenth year, on the twelfth day of the tenth month,…
Ezk 30:2-3 Son of man, prophesy and declare that this is…

Behold, the LORD rides on a swift cloud;

The Lord is pictured as coming in majesty and power, exercising authority over the nations and moving swiftly to carry out His judgment.

Psa 104:3 laying the beams of His chambers in the waters above…
Nam 1:3 The LORD is slow to anger and great in power;…
Deu 33:26 There is none like the God of Jeshurun…

He is coming to Egypt.

Egypt’s coming crisis would not merely result from human political change. The Lord Himself would act against the nation that trusted in its wealth, rulers, military power, and religious system.

Exo 12:23 When the LORD passes through to strike down the Egyptians,…
Exo 12:29-30 Now at midnight the LORD struck down every firstborn male…
Jer 46:25 The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…

The idols of Egypt will tremble before Him,

Egypt’s many gods, temples, and sacred images would prove powerless before the God of Israel. The judgment would expose the inability of Egypt’s religion to preserve the nation.

Exo 23:24 You must not bow down to their gods or serve them…
Ezk 30:13 This is what the Lord GOD says: I will destroy the idols…
Jer 43:13 He will demolish the sacred pillars of the temple of the sun…

and the hearts of the Egyptians will melt within them.

Fear and confusion would overcome the people as their confidence in Egypt’s power collapsed and the nation faced calamity.

Ezk 21:7 And when they ask, ‘Why are you groaning?’…
Jos 2:11 When we heard this, our hearts melted…
Nam 2:10 She is emptied! Yes, she is desolate and laid waste!…

“So I will incite Egyptian against Egyptian;

God announces judgment that will turn Egypt’s strength inward. Periods of weak rule in Egypt often produced rivalry between regional powers and competing leaders.

Jdg 7:22 And when the three hundred rams’ horns sounded,…
2Ch 20:23 The Ammonites and Moabites rose up against…

Ezk 38:21 And I will summon a sword against Gog on all My mountains,…
Zec 14:13 On that day a great panic from the LORD will come upon them…

Distrust and violence will spread through local communities, leaving ordinary life unstable and unsafe.

Zec 8:10 For before those days neither man nor beast received wages,…
Jer 9:4 “Let everyone guard against his neighbor; do not trust any…”…
Pro 3:29 Do not devise evil against your neighbor,…

city against city,

Egypt’s major centers and regional authorities will contend for influence as national unity collapses.

2Ch 15:6 Nation was crushed by nation, and city by city,…
Mat 12:25 Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself…
Luk 11:17 Knowing their thoughts, Jesus said to them, “Every kingdom…

and kingdom against kingdom.

Upper and Lower Egypt, along with lesser districts, will be divided against one another. The nation that once appeared powerful will be weakened by conflict from within.

Mat 24:7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom…
Luk 21:10 Then He told them, “Nation will rise against nation,…
Mrk 13:8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom…

Then the spirit of the Egyptians will be emptied out from among them,

The Lord would remove Egypt’s courage, unity, and confidence, leaving a nation renowned for its power and ancient civilization inwardly weakened. Political disorder and national distress would expose the limits of its strength.

Jos 2:11 When we heard this, our hearts melted…
Jos 5:1 Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan…
Ezk 21:7 And when they ask, ‘Why are you groaning?’…

and I will frustrate their plans,

Egypt’s rulers, counselors, and wise men would be unable to restore stability or avert judgment. Their strategies would fail because the Lord had determined to humble the nation.

Psa 33:10 The LORD frustrates the plans of the nations;…
Pro 19:21 Many plans are in a man’s heart, but the purpose…
2Sa 17:14 Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said,…

so that they will resort to idols and spirits of the dead,

In desperation, the people would turn more deeply to the false gods and occult practices woven into Egyptian religion, seeking direction where none could be found.

Lev 19:4 Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves molten gods.…
Deu 32:17 They sacrificed to demons, not to God, to newly arrived gods…
Psa 106:37 They sacrificed their sons and their daughters to demons.

to mediums and spiritists.

Rather than receiving true help, Egypt’s dependence on forbidden spiritual sources would reveal its confusion and spiritual ruin.

Isa 8:19 When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists…
Deu 18:10-11 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son…
Lev 20:6 Whoever turns to mediums or spiritists…

I will deliver the Egyptians into the hands of a harsh master,

Egypt’s political strength would collapse under foreign domination. The judgment describes internal weakness and national vulnerability leading to rule by an oppressive power. Egypt, long regarded as secure because of its wealth, military influence, and ancient institutions, would be unable to resist the ruler God permitted to govern them.

Jer 46:25-26 The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…
Ezk 29:19-20 I will give the land of Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar…
Ezk 30:10-12 This is what the Lord GOD says: I will put an end…

and a fierce king will rule over them,”

The description fits the severe foreign rulers who later brought Egypt under imperial control. Assyrian kings, and later Babylonian rulers, extended their power into Egypt and treated conquered peoples with ruthless force. Egypt’s subjugation demonstrated that no nation’s power or reputation could preserve it from God’s judgment.

Dan 8:23 In the latter part of their reign, when the rebellion…
1Ki 12:14 Whereas my father made your yoke heavy, I will add…
1Sa 8:11-18 He said, “This will be the manner of the king…”…

declares the Lord GOD of Hosts.

The outcome rests on the authority of the Lord, who rules over earthly kings and the armies of heaven. Egypt’s coming humiliation was not accidental political change but the certain decree of the sovereign God.

Amo 3:13 Hear and testify against the house of Jacob,…
Amo 4:13 “For behold, He who forms the mountains”…
Jer 46:18 As surely as I live, declares the King…

The waters of the Nile will dry up,

The Nile sustained Egypt’s fields, trade, travel, fishing, and daily life through its annual flooding. Its loss would bring widespread crop failure, economic ruin, and social distress, revealing God’s authority over the land and resources Egypt depended upon.

Zec 10:11 They will pass through the sea of distress…
Ezk 30:12 I will make the streams dry up and sell the land…
Nam 1:4 He rebukes the sea and dries it up; He makes all the rivers…

and the riverbed will be parched and empty.

The emptied channels would leave the nation’s irrigation systems, fisheries, and river commerce devastated. Egypt’s strength and prosperity would give way to desolation under God’s judgment.

Isa 44:27 who says to the depths of the sea, ‘Be dry,…
Job 14:11 As water disappears from the sea and a river…
Psa 107:33 He turns rivers into deserts, springs of water…

The canals will stink;

Egypt’s irrigation channels, fed by the Nile, sustained farming, transportation, and daily life. Their corruption would bring disease, loss of water supply, and widespread hardship, revealing the collapse of the resources in which Egypt trusted.

Exo 7:20-21 Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD had commanded;…
Isa 50:2 Why was no one there when I arrived? Why did no one answer…
Psa 105:29 He turned their waters to blood and caused…

the streams of Egypt will trickle and dry up;

The smaller branches of the Nile would no longer support the fields and settlements built around them. Without dependable water and annual flooding, crops would fail, commerce would suffer, and famine would threaten the land.

Ezk 30:12 I will make the streams dry up and sell the land…
Psa 74:15 You broke open the fountain and the flood;…
Job 14:11 As water disappears from the sea and a river…

the reeds and rushes will wither.

Vegetation along the riverbanks, including plants used for livestock feed and papyrus production, would perish with the waters. The judgment would reach every part of Egypt’s economy and way of life, from its fields to its waterways and industries.

Job 8:11-12 Does papyrus grow where there is no marsh?…
Isa 42:15 I will lay waste the mountains and hills…
Jer 12:4 How long will the land mourn and the grass…

The bulrushes by the Nile,

Reeds and papyrus grew thickly along the Nile’s banks and supplied material for writing, boats, mats, and other daily needs. Their loss would signal damage to the river environment on which Egyptian life depended.

Exo 2:3-5 But when she could no longer hide him…
Job 8:11 Does papyrus grow where there is no marsh?…
Isa 35:7 The parched ground will become a pool, the thirsty land…

by the mouth of the river,

The Nile’s lower reaches and delta were among Egypt’s most productive regions, supporting settlements, trade, and extensive cultivation. Desolation there would strike at the center of the nation’s strength.

Exo 7:19 Take your staff and stretch out your hand…
Psa 78:44 He turned their rivers to blood, and from their streams…
Ezk 30:12 I will make the streams dry up and sell the land…

and all the fields sown along the Nile,

Egyptian agriculture relied on the Nile’s yearly overflow to renew the soil with fertile silt. Crops planted beside its channels sustained the population and supplied wealth for the kingdom.

Exo 9:31-32 Now the flax and barley were destroyed…
Deu 28:38-40 You will sow much seed in the field, but harvest little…
Jol 1:10-12 The field is ruined; the land mourns…

will wither, blow away, and be no more.

God’s judgment would remove the vegetation and harvests that Egypt trusted for security. What had appeared stable and abundant would be swept away, leaving the land impoverished.

Psa 103:15-16 As for man, his days are like grass—he blooms…
Isa 40:7-8 The grass withers and the flowers fall when…
Psa 1:4 Not so the wicked! For they are like chaff…

Then the fishermen will mourn,

God’s judgment would strike Egypt’s economy at its source. The Nile sustained food supplies, trade, and employment, so the collapse of fishing would bring widespread grief and instability.

Jer 16:16 But for now I will send for many fishermen,…
Ezk 47:10 Fishermen will stand by the shore; from En-gedi to…
Luk 5:4-7 When Jesus had finished speaking, He said to Simon,…

all who cast a hook into the Nile will lament,

Even individual fishermen would lose the means of daily provision. The river Egypt trusted for life and prosperity would no longer supply what they needed.

Job 41:1-2 “Can you pull in Leviathan with a hook”…
Ezk 29:4-5 But I will put hooks in your jaws and cause the fish…
Amo 4:2 The Lord GOD has sworn by His holiness: “Behold,…

and those who spread nets on the waters will pine away.

Commercial fishing operations would also fail, leaving workers weakened by prolonged loss. The judgment exposed the helplessness of Egypt’s gods and resources before the Lord.

Hab 1:14-17 You have made men like the fish of the sea,…
Ecc 9:12 For surely no man knows his time: Like fish caught…
Mat 13:47-48 Once again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net…

The workers in flax will be dismayed,

Egypt’s renowned linen industry depended on the cultivation and processing of flax. A collapse in this vital crop would bring hardship to laborers, merchants, and households throughout the land, showing that the coming judgment would reach the foundations of Egypt’s economy.

Exo 9:31 Now the flax and barley were destroyed…
Hos 2:9 Therefore I will take back My grain in its time…
Pro 31:13 She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.

and the weavers of fine linen will turn pale.

Skilled craftsmen who produced Egypt’s prized linen would also suffer as trade and production failed. Their fear reflects the sweeping effect of God’s judgment, humbling a nation that trusted in its wealth, resources, and human skill.

1Ch 4:21 The sons of Shelah son of Judah: Er the father of Lecah,…
Exo 39:27 For Aaron and his sons they made tunics of fine linen…
Ezk 27:7 Of embroidered fine linen from Egypt they made your sail,…

The workers in cloth will be dejected,

Egypt’s linen production was a major source of wealth and trade. Its ruin would signal the collapse of an important industry and expose the weakness of the nation’s prosperity under God’s judgment.

Pro 31:13 She selects wool and flax and works with eager hands.
Pro 31:19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff…
Pro 31:24 She makes linen garments and sells them;…

and all the hired workers will be sick at heart.

Those dependent on wages would lose both income and security. The judgment would reach every level of society, bringing despair to laborers as Egypt’s economy and public life unraveled.

Jas 5:4 Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen…
Hag 1:6 You have planted much but harvested little…
Ecc 2:22-23 For what does a man get for all the toil and striving…

The princes of Zoan are mere fools;

Zoan, or Tanis, was an important city in the Nile Delta and at times a royal center of Egypt. Its officials represented the nation’s political influence and celebrated learning, yet their plans proved empty before the Lord’s purpose.

Ezk 30:14 I will lay waste Pathros, set fire to Zoan…
Psa 107:40 He pours out contempt on the nobles…
Job 12:17 He leads counselors away barefoot and makes fools of judges.

Pharaoh’s wise counselors give senseless advice.

Egypt was renowned for its scholars, priests, and advisers, and Pharaoh depended on them in matters of rule and policy. Their counsel could not discern God’s judgment or provide a remedy for the nation’s coming distress.

Isa 29:14 Therefore I will again confound these people with wonder…
Job 5:13 He catches the wise in their craftiness…
1Co 3:19 For the wisdom of this world is foolishness…

How can you say to Pharaoh,

Isaiah exposes the confidence of men who claimed authority to guide Egypt’s king while lacking the wisdom needed for the crisis before them.

Pro 25:6-7 Do not exalt yourself in the presence of the king,…
Ezk 29:3 Speak to him and tell him that this is what the Lord GOD…
Jer 46:17 There they will cry out: ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt was all noise;…

“I am one of the wise,

Their boast rested on reputation, education, and position rather than submission to God.

Jer 8:8-9 How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the Law of the LORD…
Rom 1:22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools,
Pro 26:12 Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes?…

a son of eastern kings”?

They appealed to an ancient heritage of royal and intellectual tradition, but inherited prestige could not give them understanding or preserve Egypt from judgment.

1Ki 4:30 Solomon’s wisdom was greater than that of all the men…
Job 1:3 and he owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels…
Mat 2:1-2 After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,…

Where are your wise men now?

Egypt’s counselors, celebrated for learning in astronomy, medicine, administration, and religion, could not provide wisdom when the nation faced God’s judgment. Their reputation could not protect Egypt or uncover the course God had determined.

Isa 44:25 who foils the signs of false prophets and makes fools…
Isa 29:14 Therefore I will again confound these people with wonder…
1Co 1:20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe?…

Let them tell you

The challenge exposes the failure of Egypt’s advisors to discern what was coming. Human skill and political counsel could not reveal the purposes of the Lord.

Isa 41:22-23 Let them come and tell us what will happen.…
Isa 44:7 Who then is like Me? Let him say so! Let him declare his case…
Deu 18:21-22 You may ask in your heart, “How can we recognize a message…

and reveal what the LORD of Hosts has planned against Egypt.

The LORD of Hosts rules over every power in heaven and on earth. Though Egypt was strong, wealthy, and influential among the nations, it could not resist His decree or escape the judgment He had appointed.

Jer 46:25-26 The LORD of Hosts, the God of Israel, says:…
Ezk 30:10-12 This is what the Lord GOD says: I will put an end…
Ezk 32:11-12 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘The sword of the king……

The princes of Zoan have become fools;

Zoan, or Tanis, stood in the northeastern Nile Delta as an important Egyptian center of government and religion. Its leaders, known for counsel and political influence, proved incapable of giving sound direction. Their failure showed that Egypt’s celebrated wisdom could not protect the nation when God brought judgment.

Job 12:17 He leads counselors away barefoot and makes fools of judges.
Rom 1:22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools,
Isa 44:25 who foils the signs of false prophets and makes fools…

the princes of Memphis are deceived.

Memphis was a major royal and religious city of Egypt. Its officials trusted their own wisdom, idols, and political schemes, yet were led into error. Those responsible for guiding the nation could not discern the course ahead.

Ezk 30:13 This is what the Lord GOD says: I will destroy the idols…
Isa 36:6 Look now, you are trusting in Egypt…
Isa 31:3 But the Egyptians are men, not God; their horses are flesh…

The cornerstones of her tribes have led Egypt astray.

Egypt’s chief rulers and influential leaders, who should have provided stability for the people, instead directed the nation toward ruin. The collapse of leadership contributed to Egypt’s wider moral and spiritual disorder and demonstrated God’s judgment against its pride and false confidence.

Isa 9:16 For those who guide this people mislead them…
Isa 3:12 Youths oppress My people, and women rule over them.…
Jer 23:13 Among the prophets of Samaria I saw an offensive thing:…

The LORD has poured into her a spirit of confusion.

God’s judgment had fallen on Egypt, leaving its leaders and counselors unable to think or act with clarity. The nation’s confidence in its wisdom, religion, and power would not preserve it from the Lord’s purpose.

Deu 28:28 The LORD will afflict you with madness, blindness,…
2Th 2:11 For this reason God will send them a powerful delusion…
1Ki 22:22-23 And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit…

Egypt has been led astray in all she does,

Its rulers would pursue misguided plans and bring disorder rather than stability. Egypt’s celebrated strength and counsel would prove powerless when God turned its leaders from sound judgment.

Isa 9:16 For those who guide this people mislead them…
Isa 3:12 Youths oppress My people, and women rule over them.…
Jer 23:32 “Indeed,” declares the LORD, “I am against those…

as a drunkard staggers through his own vomit.

The image depicts complete humiliation and helplessness. Egypt would be unable to recover its footing, ruined by the very confusion that governed its decisions.

Jer 25:27 Then you are to tell them that this is what the LORD…
Isa 28:7-8 These also stagger from wine and stumble…
Pro 26:11 As a dog returns to its vomit, so a fool repeats his folly.

There is nothing Egypt can do—

Egypt’s renowned power, counsel, and institutions will fail under God’s judgment. Neither military strength nor political wisdom will provide a remedy.

A Blessing upon the Earth

In that day

God will bring a decisive judgment upon Egypt, a nation long regarded as a major power in the ancient world.

Isa 24:21 In that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven…
Isa 2:11 The proud look of man will be humbled…
Isa 11:10 On that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner…

the Egyptians will be like women.

Their military strength and national confidence will fail, leaving them exposed and unable to resist.

Jer 46:5 Why am I seeing this? They are terrified, they are retreating;…
Jer 48:41 Kirioth has been taken, and the strongholds seized.…

They will tremble with fear

Exo 15:15 Then the chiefs of Edom will be dismayed;…

Jer 43:13 He will demolish the sacred pillars of the temple of the sun…
Gen 41:45 Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath-paneah,…
Ezk 30:17 The young men of On and Pi-beseth will fall by the sword,…

In that day

God points to a future time when He will bring judgment, healing, and restoration among the nations. Egypt, long associated with Israel’s bondage and pagan worship, will become a place where the LORD is openly honored.

Isa 4:2 On that day the Branch of the LORD will be beautiful…
Jol 3:18 And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine…

there will be an altar to the LORD

Egyptians will worship the God of Israel rather than their false gods. The altar portrays genuine devotion and sacrifice directed to the LORD.

Gen 8:20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD…
Exo 20:24 You are to make for Me an altar of earth…
Mal 1:11 For My name will be great among the nations,…

in the center of the land of Egypt,

Worship of the LORD will not be limited to a small border region or foreign settlement. It will reach into the heart of Egyptian life and identity.

Exo 8:22-23 But on that day I will give special treatment to the land…
Lev 26:12 I will walk among you and be your God,…
Ezk 37:27 My dwelling place will be with them; I will be their God…

and a pillar to the LORD near her border.

A public monument at Egypt’s boundary will testify that the land belongs under the LORD’s authority. Together, the altar and pillar show worship of the LORD throughout Egypt, from its center to its borders.

Gen 31:45-49 So Jacob picked out a stone and set it up as a pillar,…
Gen 28:18 Early the next morning, Jacob took the stone…
Jos 4:9 Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle…

It will be a sign and a witness to the LORD of Hosts in the land of Egypt.

An altar and pillar in Egypt would publicly testify that the God of Israel is Lord over every nation, including a land long associated with Israel’s oppression and idolatry. Egypt’s acknowledgment of Him marks a movement from judgment toward restoration.

Exo 12:13 The blood on the houses where you are staying…
Jos 22:34 So the Reubenites and Gadites named the altar Witness…
Jos 24:27 And Joshua said to all the people, “You see this stone.…

When they cry out to the LORD because of their oppressors,

Egypt will experience affliction severe enough to lead its people to seek the LORD for help. As He heard Israel’s cry under Egyptian bondage, He will hear Egyptians who turn to Him in their distress.

Exo 2:23-25 After a long time, the king of Egypt died.…
Jdg 4:3 Then the Israelites cried out to the LORD,…
Psa 107:6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,…

He will send them a savior and defender to rescue them.

The LORD will provide deliverance from their oppressors through one appointed to save and protect them. The promise displays His mercy toward those outside Israel and anticipates the greater salvation brought through Christ.

2Ki 13:5 So the LORD gave Israel a deliverer, and they escaped…
1Sa 12:11 So the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel…
Neh 9:27 So You delivered them into the hands of enemies…

The LORD will make Himself known to Egypt,

God will reveal His power and authority to a nation long associated with idolatry and opposition to His people. Egypt’s knowledge of the LORD will replace devotion to its many gods and demonstrate that His rule extends beyond Israel.

Ezk 29:6 Then all the people of Egypt will know that I am the LORD.…
Exo 14:4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart so that he will pursue…
Exo 7:5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the LORD,…

and on that day Egypt will acknowledge the LORD.

Egyptians will recognize the LORD as the true God and submit to Him. The prophecy anticipates a real turning from Egypt’s former religious system to worship of the God of Israel.

Exo 10:16-17 Pharaoh quickly summoned Moses and Aaron and said,…
Ezk 36:23 I will show the holiness of My great name,…
Isa 45:14 This is what the LORD says: “The products of Egypt…

They will worship with sacrifices and offerings;

Their acknowledgment will be expressed through public worship and devotion consistent with the worship of the LORD. Sacrifices and offerings portray repentance, gratitude, and wholehearted allegiance.

Isa 56:7 I will bring them to My holy mountain and make them joyful…
Mal 1:11 For My name will be great among the nations,…
Psa 107:22 Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving…

they will make vows to the LORD and fulfill them.
