Numbers 5
Berean Study Bible

Cleansing the Camps

Then the LORD said to Moses,

God directly gave Moses the instructions governing Israel’s camp. As Israel’s appointed leader and mediator, Moses received God’s commands and conveyed them to the people. The LORD’s covenant name affirms that the commands came from the God who had redeemed Israel and dwelt among them. The instructions that follow concern the purity of the camp, where God’s presence rested among His people.

Lev 4:1 Then the LORD said to Moses,
Exo 19:9 The LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you…
Exo 6:2 God also told Moses, “I am the LORD.

“Command the Israelites

God gave Moses authority to enforce these regulations throughout Israel’s camp, where the tabernacle stood as the sign of His presence among the people.

Lev 19:2 Speak to the whole congregation of Israel and tell them:…
Lev 20:7-8 Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy,…

to send away from the camp

Those rendered ceremonially unclean were removed from the camp until they could be restored to purity, guarding the holiness of the place where God dwelt among Israel.

Those with serious skin conditions were examined and kept apart while uncleanness remained, protecting the community and preserving the required separation from impurity.

Mrk 1:40-45 Then a leper came to Jesus, begging on his knees:…

anyone who has a bodily discharge,

Certain bodily conditions also made a person ceremonially unclean and unable to participate fully in worship until the prescribed period and cleansing were complete.

Lev 15:2-3 “Say to the Israelites, ‘When any man has a bodily discharge,……
Lev 15:16-18 When a man has an emission of semen, he must bathe…
Lev 15:25-27 When a woman has a discharge of her blood for many days…

and anyone who is defiled by a dead body.

Contact with death brought ritual defilement because death stood in contrast to the life and holiness of God. These regulations distinguished Israel from surrounding nations and taught that uncleanness could not remain in the presence of a holy God.

Num 19:11-13 Whoever touches any dead body will be unclean…
Hag 2:13 So Haggai asked, “If one who is defiled by contact”…
Lev 21:1-4 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Speak to Aaron’s sons…

You must send away male and female alike;

Israel’s standards of ritual purity applied to every member of the camp without distinction. Those rendered unclean were removed until the prescribed period of cleansing was complete, protecting the whole congregation from impurity.

Lev 13:46 As long as he has the infection, he remains unclean.…
Lev 15:2-3 “Say to the Israelites, ‘When any man has a bodily discharge,……

send them outside the camp

The camp was arranged around the tabernacle, where the LORD dwelt among His people. Removal outside its boundaries marked temporary separation from the worshiping community and safeguarded the holiness of the place where God had placed His name.

Exo 33:7 Now Moses used to take the tent and pitch it…
Lev 16:27 The bull for the sin offering and the goat……
Heb 13:12-13 And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate…

so they will not defile their camp,

Uncleanness could spread through contact and affect the community’s ability to remain near the holy God. Obedience in these matters recognized that Israel belonged to Him and was called to live according to His commands.

Deu 23:14 For the LORD your God walks throughout your camp…
Lev 15:31 You must keep the children of Israel separate…
Num 19:20 But if a person who is unclean does not purify himself,…

God’s presence in the center of Israel made the camp holy. The tabernacle was not merely a gathering place but the appointed dwelling of the LORD among His redeemed people, requiring reverence, order, and purity.

Exo 25:8 And they are to make a sanctuary for Me,…
Exo 29:45-46 Then I will dwell among the Israelites and be their God.…
Lev 26:11-12 And I will make My dwelling place among you,…

So the Israelites did this,

Israel obeyed the command given through Moses, removing those with conditions that made them ceremonially unclean. Their obedience protected the sanctity of the camp, where the LORD dwelt among His people.

Num 9:5 and they did so in the Wilderness of Sinai,…

sending such people outside the camp.

Those sent out were not necessarily being punished for personal sin; their exclusion prevented ceremonial uncleanness from defiling the community. They remained outside only until the prescribed process of cleansing was complete.

They did just as the LORD had instructed Moses.

The people recognized that Moses was carrying out God’s direct instruction. Their compliance affirmed the LORD’s authority over the ordering, worship, and purity of Israel’s camp.

Exo 40:16 Moses did everything just as the LORD had commanded him.

Confession and Restitution

And the LORD said to Moses,

God again addressed Moses directly, confirming that the instructions came from the covenant Lord rather than from human authority. As Israel’s appointed leader, Moses received God’s commands and delivered them to the people, maintaining order in the camp and faithfulness to the holiness required of a nation dwelling near the Lord.

Exo 25:1 Then the LORD said to Moses,
Num 6:1 And the LORD said to Moses,
Lev 1:1 Then the LORD called to Moses and spoke to him…

“Tell the Israelites

Moses delivers God’s command to the covenant people descended from Jacob. The instruction applies to the whole community living under the law given at Sinai.

Lev 1:2 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When any of you”…
Lev 4:2 Tell the Israelites to do as follows with one who sins…

Both men and women are personally accountable before God and subject to the same requirements for confession and restitution.

Deu 31:12 Assemble the people—men, women, children…

acts unfaithfully against the LORD

Sin against another person violates God’s covenant and His righteous order. Israel’s faithfulness to the LORD was to govern private conduct as well as public worship.

Lev 6:2 If someone sins and acts unfaithfully against the LORD…
1Ch 10:13 So Saul died for his unfaithfulness to the LORD…
2Ch 28:19 For the LORD humbled Judah because Ahaz king of Israel…

by committing any sin against another,

Wrongdoing against a neighbor included offenses requiring repayment or restoration, since injury to another member of the community could not be separated from obedience to God.

1Sa 2:25 If a man sins against another man, God can intercede…
Exo 22:7-9 If a man gives his neighbor money or goods for safekeeping…
Lev 19:11-13 You must not steal. You must not lie or deceive one another.…

that person is guilty

The offender bears real guilt and must acknowledge the sin, make restitution, and seek the atonement God provided.

Lev 4:27 And if one of the common people sins unintentionally…
Lev 5:17 If someone sins and violates any of the LORD’s commandments…
Lev 5:5 If someone incurs guilt in one of these ways,…

and must confess the sin he has committed.

Sin required open acknowledgment before God, exposing wrongdoing rather than concealing it. Confession established personal guilt and prepared the way for forgiveness and restoration within Israel’s covenant community.

Lev 5:5 If someone incurs guilt in one of these ways,…
Pro 28:13 He who conceals his sins will not prosper,…
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just…

He must make full restitution,

Forgiveness did not remove the offender’s obligation to repair material harm. The injured person was to receive what had been lost, affirming that sin against a neighbor also disrupted the justice and peace of the community.

Lev 6:4 once he has sinned and becomes guilty, he must return…
Exo 22:1-4 If a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters or sells it…
Pro 6:31 Yet if caught, he must pay sevenfold; he must give up…

An additional twenty percent compensated for the loss and inconvenience caused by the offense. The penalty also discouraged fraud and careless wrongdoing by requiring more than the original amount.

Lev 27:15 But if he who consecrated his house redeems it,…
Lev 27:19 And if the one who consecrated the field decides…

and give all this to the one he has wronged.

Restitution was directed to the victim or, if no close relative remained, to the LORD through the priest. The law joined accountability before God with tangible reconciliation toward the person who had been harmed.

Luk 19:8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,…
Exo 22:7-9 If a man gives his neighbor money or goods for safekeeping…
Pro 3:27-28 Do not withhold good from the deserving,…

But if the man has no relative to whom restitution can be made for the wrong,

Restitution normally belonged to the injured person or his nearest kinsman. If no family representative remained, the offender was not released from his obligation. The wrong still required settlement.

Lev 6:4-5 once he has sinned and becomes guilty, he must return…
Exo 22:1 If a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters or sells it…
Ezk 33:15 if he restores a pledge, makes restitution…

the restitution belongs to the LORD

Because the offense also violated God’s law, the payment became the LORD’s due when no human claimant remained. Justice was not abandoned simply because the victim’s family line had ended.

Lev 5:15 If someone acts unfaithfully and sins unintentionally…
Num 18:14 Every devoted thing in Israel belongs to you.
Lev 27:30 Thus any tithe from the land, whether from the seed…

and must be given to the priest

The priest received the restitution as the LORD’s representative and administered it according to the law. This also supported the priesthood, which possessed no tribal land inheritance.

Num 18:8-11 Then the LORD said to Aaron, “Behold, I have put you…
Lev 7:9-10 Likewise, every grain offering that is baked in an oven…
Deu 18:3-4 This shall be the priests’ share from the people…

along with the ram of atonement,

Financial repayment addressed the loss caused to another person, but sacrifice was required for the sinner’s guilt before God. The ram acknowledged that wrongdoing required divine forgiveness as well as restitution.

Lev 5:18 He is to bring to the priest an unblemished ram…
Lev 14:12 Then the priest is to take one of the male lambs.…
Lev 19:22 The priest shall make atonement on his behalf…

by which the atonement is made for him.

Through the prescribed offering, the offender was cleansed and restored to fellowship with God. The law joined personal responsibility, public justice, and reconciliation with the LORD.

Lev 4:20 He shall offer this bull just as he did the bull…
Lev 14:20 and offer it on the altar, with the grain offering…
Lev 16:30 because on this day atonement will be made…

Every sacred contribution

Offerings set apart for the LORD included portions of produce, livestock, and other gifts designated for sacred use. What was consecrated to God was treated as holy and could not be used as ordinary property.

Num 18:19 All the holy offerings that the Israelites present…
Lev 27:30 Thus any tithe from the land, whether from the seed…

the Israelites bring

Each Israelite bore responsibility to bring the required offerings to the sanctuary. These gifts expressed obedience to God’s covenant and supported the worship He had established for the nation.

Exo 35:29 So all the men and women of the Israelites…
Lev 22:18-19 “Speak to Aaron and his sons and all the Israelites…

to the priest

Aaron’s descendants received and administered these offerings as they served at the tabernacle. They represented the people in the sacrifices and guarded the holiness of Israel’s worship.

Deu 18:3 This shall be the priests’ share from the people…
Ezk 44:29-30 They shall eat the grain offerings, the sin offerings,…

shall belong to him.

The priests received sacred contributions because they had no tribal land inheritance and were devoted to their duties before the LORD. God provided for their household through the offerings brought by His people.

Num 18:8-9 Then the LORD said to Aaron, “Behold, I have put you…
Lev 7:34 I have taken from the sons of Israel the breast…

Each man’s sacred gifts are his own,

Offerings brought to the sanctuary remained under the worshiper’s responsibility until they were presented according to God’s command. Israelites gave tithes, firstfruits, sacrifices, and other consecrated gifts as acts of obedience and worship.

Num 18:8-11 Then the LORD said to Aaron, “Behold, I have put you…
Ezk 44:29-30 They shall eat the grain offerings, the sin offerings,…

but whatever he gives to the priest

Once an offering was entrusted to the priest, it was transferred for the support of the Aaronic priesthood. The priests and Levites received no tribal territory for farming, so God provided for their service through the gifts of Israel.

Num 18:12-13 I give you all the freshest olive oil…
Lev 7:32-34 And you are to give the right thigh to the priest…

will belong to the priest.”

The gift became the priest’s rightful possession and could not be reclaimed by the giver. This protected the provision God had established for those who served at the tabernacle.

Exo 29:27-28 Consecrate for Aaron and his sons the breast of the wave…
Num 18:14 Every devoted thing in Israel belongs to you.

The Adultery Test

Then the LORD said to Moses,

God continued to reveal His will through Moses, whom He appointed to lead Israel and deliver His commands during the wilderness journey. The instructions that follow addressed matters affecting marital faithfulness, purity, and justice within the camp. By speaking directly to Moses, the LORD established these laws as binding for the covenant community and placed their administration under the authority He had given Moses.

Exo 40:1 Then the LORD said to Moses,
Exo 6:10 So the LORD said to Moses,
Num 15:1 Then the LORD said to Moses,

“Speak to the Israelites

God directed Moses to deliver this instruction to the whole nation, establishing a legal process for preserving holiness and justice within Israel’s covenant community.

Lev 1:2 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When any of you”…
Lev 4:2 Tell the Israelites to do as follows with one who sins…
Num 15:2 Speak to the Israelites and tell them: …

and tell them that if any man’s wife goes astray

A married woman who departed from faithfulness to her husband violated the sacred bond of marriage and threatened the stability of the household.

Pro 7:5 that they may keep you from the adulteress,…
Pro 30:20 This is the way of an adulteress: She eats…

and is unfaithful to him

Adultery was a serious sin against both the husband and God’s order for marriage. The following law addressed cases of suspected unfaithfulness when no human witness or evidence was available.

Deu 22:22 If a man is found lying with another man’s wife,…
Lev 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife…
Exo 20:14 You shall not commit adultery.

by sleeping with another man,

Adultery violated the marriage covenant and the seventh commandment. In Israel, marriage was foundational to family and community life, so sexual unfaithfulness was treated as a serious offense before God and society.

Lev 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife…
Deu 22:22 If a man is found lying with another man’s wife,…
Pro 6:32 He who commits adultery lacks judgment;…

The woman’s secrecy adds deceit to the violation of the covenant, leaving the husband without knowledge or legal proof of what occurred.

Pro 28:13 He who conceals his sins will not prosper,…

Her uncleanness remains hidden from the community, though not from God. The law addressed such concealed wrongdoing because outward appearances could not always reveal the truth.

Pro 30:20 This is the way of an adulteress: She eats…

(since there is no witness against her and she was not caught in the act),

Without witnesses or direct evidence, ordinary judicial procedures could not establish guilt. The provisions that follow placed the matter before the Lord, who alone knew whether the accusation was true.

Deu 17:6 On the testimony of two or three witnesses…

Marital unfaithfulness threatened the integrity of the household, the certainty of inheritance, and the covenant bond between husband and wife. His jealousy could arise from a real concern that the marriage had been violated.

Sng 8:6 Set me as a seal over your heart, as a seal upon your arm.…
Pro 27:4 Wrath is cruel and anger is like a flood,…

and he suspects his wife who has defiled herself—

Sexual sin brought guilt before God and disrupted the holiness required among His people. Because the accusation could not always be established by witnesses, the law provided a solemn procedure to bring the matter before the Lord.

Lev 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife…

or if a feeling of jealousy comes over him

Jealousy itself was not treated as proof of guilt. The repetition recognizes the seriousness of suspicion while placing it under an ordered judicial process rather than private retaliation.

Gal 5:20 idolatry and sorcery; hatred, discord, jealousy…
Pro 14:30 A tranquil heart is life to the body, but…

The law also guarded an innocent wife against an unfounded accusation. The prescribed ordeal in Numbers 5:15–31 entrusted the hidden truth to God, who would expose guilt or uphold innocence.

The suspected act was a direct breach of the exclusive union established in marriage. The ordeal described in this passage placed the matter before the Lord when human evidence was unavailable, leaving judgment in His hands.

Exo 20:14 You shall not commit adultery.
Pro 6:32 He who commits adultery lacks judgment;…

and the priest shall have the woman swear under the oath of the curse—

The priest administered this solemn oath before the LORD as part of the jealousy offering. The woman’s words placed her case in God’s hands, since no human witness could establish whether adultery had occurred. Marriage faithfulness was treated as a covenant matter affecting both the household and the wider community.

If she were guilty, the judgment would become a public warning. The invocation of the LORD’s name underscored the seriousness of the curse. Her condition would demonstrate that the LORD had exposed hidden sin and upheld the sanctity of marriage. He is to have the woman drink the bitter water that brings a curse,

The priest administered the water prepared for the ordeal of jealousy, after the woman had taken the required oath before the Lord. Mixed with dust from the tabernacle floor and the written curses, it placed the matter under God’s judgment when no human witness could establish guilt or innocence. The rite upheld the sanctity of marriage and protected the household from unresolved suspicion.

The threatened judgment was a solemn warning against unfaithfulness and concealed sin. Its consequences involved bodily affliction, public disgrace, and the disruption of the family, showing that covenant betrayal was not a private matter before God.

The woman’s offering of barley meal was brought before the LORD as part of the test for suspected unfaithfulness. Unlike regular grain offerings, it contained no oil or frankincense, fitting the solemn character of the proceeding. The priest received it as God’s appointed minister, placing the accusation and its outcome under divine judgment rather than human speculation.

The priest removes a representative portion of the barley offering and presents it before the Lord. As part of the jealousy offering, it brings the accusation and the woman’s oath into God’s presence, appealing to Him as the righteous Judge. The use of barley, without oil or incense, reflects the solemn and troubling nature of the proceeding.

After the offering is presented, the woman drinks the holy water containing the written curse. If she is innocent, she is unharmed; if she is guilty, the Lord brings the stated judgment upon her. The ritual guarded marriage faithfulness while placing the final verdict in God’s hands.

This is the law of jealousy

God established this procedure to address suspected adultery when no human witness or evidence could settle the matter. It protected marriage from secret unfaithfulness while also preventing a husband from acting on jealousy alone.

Jealousy arose when a husband believed his wife might have been unfaithful. In Israel, marriage was a binding covenant, and adultery threatened the household, inheritance, and holiness of the community.

Because suspicion alone could not establish guilt, the law provided a means to bring the matter before God rather than leaving it to accusation, retaliation, or private judgment.

The husband will be free from guilt,

The law placed the matter before the Lord rather than leaving a jealous husband to judge or punish his wife on suspicion alone. Through the priestly ordeal, the woman’s innocence could be established or her unfaithfulness exposed. The husband was cleared of responsibility for the outcome once he had followed God’s appointed procedure, and private vengeance was restrained.

If she had been unfaithful, the judgment brought the consequences of her sin upon her. Adultery violated both the marriage covenant and God’s commandment, and the guilty woman bore the judgment due to her own actions. The ordeal did not create guilt but revealed it before the Lord.
