Leviticus 20

Punishments for Disobedience

Then the LORD said to Moses,

God continued to give His commands through Moses, the appointed mediator between the Lord and Israel. These instructions were part of the covenant established at Sinai, calling the nation to live in holiness and obedience as God’s people. Moses received and faithfully conveyed God’s law, establishing the divine authority of the commands that follow.

Lev 1:1 Then the LORD called to Moses and spoke to him…
Exo 6:1 But the LORD said to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do…
Num 12:6 He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you…

“Tell the Israelites,

God charged Moses with delivering this command to the covenant people, who were responsible to order their national and religious life according to His law.

Lev 1:2 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When any of you”…
Num 15:2 Speak to the Israelites and tell them: …
Exo 19:3 Then Moses went up to God, and the LORD called to him…

‘Any Israelite or foreigner living in Israel

Everyone dwelling among Israel was accountable to the same prohibition. Foreign residents were not exempt from laws that protected the worship of God and the moral purity of the land.

Lev 24:22 You are to have the same standard of law…
Exo 12:49 The same law shall apply to both the native…
Num 15:15-16 The assembly is to have the same statute both for you…

who gives any of his children to Molech

Molech worship involved offering children in pagan rites, an act of idolatry and murder that directly opposed Israel’s worship of the Lord.

Lev 18:21 You must not give any of your children to be sacrificed…
2Ki 23:10 He also desecrated Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom…
Jer 7:31 They have built the high places of Topheth…

must be put to death.

The death penalty showed the seriousness of this rebellion and guarded the nation from practices that would corrupt its worship and destroy innocent life.

Lev 24:16 Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD…
Deu 13:5 Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death,…
Num 35:31 You are not to accept a ransom for the life of a murderer…

The people of the land are to stone him.

The community was to carry out the judgment publicly, sharing responsibility for upholding God’s law and rejecting pagan worship.

Lev 24:14 Take the blasphemer outside the camp…
Deu 17:5 you must bring out to your gates the man or woman…
Deu 13:10 Stone him to death for trying to turn you away…

And I will set My face against that man

God personally opposes the offender and brings judgment upon him for turning from the covenant.

Child sacrifice to Molech was a forbidden act of idolatry that rejected the Lord’s authority and violated His commands.

Lev 18:21 You must not give any of your children to be sacrificed…
2Ki 23:10 He also desecrated Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom…
Jer 32:35 They have built the high places of Baal in the Valley…

he has defiled My sanctuary

Such sin polluted the land and dishonored the place where God dwelt among His people.

Ezk 5:11 Therefore as surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
Ezk 23:38-39 They have also done this to Me: On that very same day…
Psa 74:7 They have burned Your sanctuary to the ground;…

and profaned My holy name.

By joining in pagan worship, the offender treated God’s holy name with contempt and misrepresented Him before Israel and the surrounding nations.

Ezk 36:20-23 And wherever they went among the nations,…
Lev 22:32 You must not profane My holy name. I must be acknowledged…
Mal 1:12 But you profane it when you say, ‘The table of the Lord…

And if the people of the land ever hide their eyes

Israel was responsible to guard the holiness of the covenant community. Deliberately ignoring such evil made the people complicit in allowing it to continue.

Deu 17:2-7 If a man or woman among you in one of the towns…

the man who gives one of his children to Molech,

Offering children to Molech was a horrific act of pagan worship that violated God’s command and desecrated human life. It revealed a rejection of the Lord in favor of the idols worshiped by surrounding nations.

Lev 18:21 You must not give any of your children to be sacrificed…
2Ki 23:10 He also desecrated Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom…
Deu 12:31 You must not worship the LORD your God in this way,…

then I will set My face against that man and his family

God Himself stands in judgment against the offender and his household, whose connection to his idolatry places them under covenant discipline.

Ezk 14:8 I will set My face against that man and make him a sign…
Jos 7:24-25 Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan…
Exo 20:5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them;…

and cut off from among their people

They would be removed from Israel through divine judgment, no longer permitted to remain within the holy community.

Exo 31:14 Keep the Sabbath, for it is holy. Anyone who profanes it…
Num 15:30-31 But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native…
Gen 17:14 But if any male is not circumcised, he will be…

both him and all who follow him

The judgment extends to those who imitate or join him in worshiping Molech, since they willingly share in his rebellion.

Deu 13:6-11 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter,…
Jer 11:10 They have returned to the sins of their forefathers…
Num 16:32-33 and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them…

in prostituting themselves with Molech.

Idolatry is spiritual unfaithfulness to the Lord. Molech worship, associated with child sacrifice, directly violated Israel’s covenant obligations and defiled the land.

Jer 32:35 They have built the high places of Baal in the Valley…
2Ki 23:10 He also desecrated Topheth in the Valley of Ben-hinnom…
Ezk 16:20-21 You even took the sons and daughters you bore to Me…

Whoever turns to mediums or spiritists

Israel was forbidden to seek hidden knowledge or direction through those who claimed contact with the dead or with spirits. Such practices belonged to the idolatrous religions surrounding Israel and rejected the Lord as the only rightful source of guidance.

Deu 18:10-12 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son…
Isa 8:19 When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists…
1Sa 28:7 Then Saul said to his servants, “Find me a woman”…

to prostitute himself with them,

Seeking spiritual help from forbidden sources was covenant unfaithfulness. Israel belonged to the Lord, and turning elsewhere for protection, knowledge, or power treated that relationship as though it were worthless.

Exo 34:15-16 Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land,…
Jdg 2:17 Israel, however, did not listen to their judges.…
Hos 4:12-14 My people consult wooden idols, and divining rods…

I will also set My face against that person

God Himself would oppose the offender rather than overlook the sin. His judgment fell on those who knowingly abandoned His commands for occult practices.

Ezk 14:8 I will set My face against that man and make him a sign…
Ezk 15:7 And I will set My face against them.…

and cut him off from his people.

The offender would be removed from the covenant community under God’s judgment, preserving Israel from practices that defiled the nation and led it toward idolatry.

Gen 17:14 But if any male is not circumcised, he will be…
Exo 30:33 Anyone who mixes perfume like it or puts it on an outsider…
Num 15:30-31 But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native…

Consecrate yourselves, therefore,

Israel was commanded to prepare itself for God by rejecting defilement and ordering life according to His commands. Their separation from pagan practices marked them as a people belonging to Him.

Lev 11:44 For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves…
Num 11:18 And say to the people: Consecrate yourselves for tomorrow,…
Jos 3:5 Then Joshua told the people, “Consecrate yourselves,…

and be holy,

Holiness required both ceremonial cleanness and moral obedience, being morally and spiritually pure and reflecting God’s character. God’s people were not to adopt the idolatry, sexual immorality, and occult practices common among the nations around them.

Lev 19:2 Speak to the whole congregation of Israel and tell them:…
1Pe 1:15-16 But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy…
Heb 12:14 Pursue peace with everyone, as well as holiness,…

because I am the LORD your God.

The command rests on God’s covenant authority and character. As Israel’s God, the LORD had redeemed them and set them apart to live under His rule.

Lev 18:2 Speak to the Israelites and tell them: I am the LORD…
Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.…
Deu 7:6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God.…

And you shall keep My statutes and practice them.

Israel’s covenant life required more than knowing God’s commands; they were to obey them in daily conduct. The statutes governed worship, morality, justice, and community life, marking Israel as God’s distinct people among the nations. Obedience expressed loyalty to the God who had redeemed them from Egypt and called them to live according to His holy standards.

Lev 18:4-5 You are to practice My judgments and keep My statutes…
Lev 19:37 You must keep all My statutes and all My ordinances…
Deu 6:17 You are to diligently keep the commandments of the LORD…

I am the LORD who sanctifies you.

The LORD alone set Israel apart as His holy people. Their holiness depended on His covenant presence and authority, not merely on outward observance. By obeying His commands, Israel was to reflect the character of the God who had chosen, redeemed, and consecrated them for His purposes.

Exo 31:13 Tell the Israelites, ‘Surely you must keep My Sabbaths,…
Lev 21:8 You are to regard him as holy, since he presents the food…
Ezk 37:28 Then the nations will know that I the LORD sanctify Israel,…

If anyone curses his father or mother,

Israel’s covenant life depended on honoring the authority God established within the household. To curse a parent was a deliberate act of contempt and rebellion, treating those entrusted with parental authority as deserving harm or disgrace.

Exo 21:17 Anyone who curses his father or mother…
Pro 20:20 Whoever curses his father or mother, his lamp…

he must be put to death.

The death penalty showed that such rebellion was not a private family matter but an offense against God’s order for His people. Open rejection of parental authority threatened the stability and holiness of the covenant community.

Exo 21:15 Whoever strikes his father or mother…
Deu 21:18-21 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son…

He has cursed his father or mother;

The repeated charge confirms the seriousness of the crime and establishes the grounds for judgment. His words revealed a settled defiance toward both his parents and the command of God.

Pro 30:11 There is a generation of those who curse their fathers…
Mat 15:4 For God said, ‘Honor your father and mother’……
Mrk 7:10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’……

his blood shall be upon him.

The offender bore full responsibility for the penalty. His death resulted from his own sin, and the community carried out God’s commanded judgment rather than acting in personal vengeance.

Jos 2:19 If anyone goes out the door of your house into the street,…
2Sa 1:16 For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood…
Ezk 33:4-5 Then if anyone hears the sound of the horn…

Punishments for Sexual Immorality

If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife—

Adultery violated the marriage covenant established by God and threatened the stability of Israelite homes and communities. Marriage was to be guarded as an exclusive union, and sexual unfaithfulness was treated as rebellion against God’s order.

Exo 20:14 You shall not commit adultery.
Deu 5:18 You shall not commit adultery.
Pro 6:32 He who commits adultery lacks judgment;…

with the wife of his neighbor—

The offense included betrayal of a fellow Israelite, violating the trust and responsibility owed within the covenant community. A neighbor’s household was not to be exploited or dishonored.

Pro 6:29 So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife;…
Jer 29:23 For they have committed an outrage in Israel…
Jer 5:8 They are well-fed, lusty stallions, each neighing…

both the adulterer and the adulteress

Both participants bore guilt before God and were subject to the same judgment. The law did not excuse the man while condemning the woman, but held each accountable for willing participation in the sin.

Deu 22:22 If a man is found lying with another man’s wife,…
1Co 6:9-10 Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral…
Heb 13:4 Marriage should be honored by all and the marriage bed…

must surely be put to death.

Israel’s civil penalty reflected the seriousness of adultery in a nation called to live in holiness under God’s covenant. The judgment was intended to restrain open wickedness and preserve the purity of family life and the community.

Deu 22:24 you must take both of them out to the gate…
Lev 24:16 Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD…
Jhn 8:5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such a woman.…

If a man lies with his father’s wife,

A man who has sexual relations with his father’s wife commits incest and violates the order of the household. This dishonors his father, defiles the marriage covenant, and corrupts the family boundaries God established for Israel.

Deu 27:20 Cursed is he who sleeps with his father’s wife……
1Co 5:1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality…
2Sa 16:21-22 Sleep with your father’s concubines, whom he has left…

he has uncovered his father’s nakedness.

The offense is treated as a direct shame brought upon the father as well as a serious violation against the woman and the family.

1Ch 5:1 These were the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel.…
Gen 49:4 Uncontrolled as the waters, you will no longer excel,…
Gen 9:22-23 And Ham, the father of Canaan,…

Both must surely be put to death;

Under Israel’s covenant law, this deliberate sexual sin brought the highest civil penalty. The judgment guarded the holiness of the community and upheld the sanctity of marriage and family.

Deu 22:22 If a man is found lying with another man’s wife,…
Deu 22:24 you must take both of them out to the gate…
Rom 1:32 Although they know God’s righteous decree…

their blood is upon them.

They bear responsibility for their own guilt and the consequence of their actions.

Ezk 33:4-5 Then if anyone hears the sound of the horn…
Jos 2:19 If anyone goes out the door of your house into the street,…
2Sa 1:16 For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood…

If a man lies with his daughter-in-law,

If a man lies with his daughter-in-law, he violates his son’s marriage bond and corrupts the ordered relationships God established within the household. Such conduct was forbidden in Israel because it brought dishonor and disorder to the family and community.

Lev 18:15 You must not have sexual relations with your daughter-in-law…
Ezk 22:11 One man commits an abomination with his neighbor’s wife;…

both must surely be put to death.

Under the law given to Israel, both parties were held accountable for this grave sexual sin. The penalty marked the seriousness of defiling family boundaries within the covenant community.

Deu 22:22 If a man is found lying with another man’s wife,…
Deu 22:24 you must take both of them out to the gate…

They have acted perversely;

The phrase “They have acted perversely” characterizes their conduct as a deliberate violation of God’s design for marriage, faithfulness, and family order.

2Sa 13:12 “No, my brother!” she cried. “Do not violate me”…
Gen 34:7 When Jacob’s sons heard what had happened, they returned…

their blood is upon them.

They bore responsibility for their own guilt and the judgment imposed upon them.

Ezk 33:4-5 Then if anyone hears the sound of the horn…
2Sa 1:16 For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood…

If a man lies with a man as with a woman,

God forbade male same-sex intercourse within Israel’s covenant law. The command stands among prohibitions of incest, adultery, and bestiality, guarding the sexual order established in creation through the union of man and woman in marriage.

Lev 18:22 You must not lie with a man as with a woman;……
Rom 1:26-27 For this reason God gave them over to dishonorable passions.…
1Co 6:9-10 Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral…

they have both committed an abomination.

Both participants were held accountable for conduct God declared detestable and incompatible with the holiness required of His people. Israel was not to adopt the practices of the surrounding nations.

Lev 18:29 Therefore anyone who commits any of these abominations…
Jud 1:7 In like manner, Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities…
Deu 23:18 You must not bring the wages of a prostitute…

They must surely be put to death;

Under Israel’s theocratic civil law, such open defiance of God’s command carried the death penalty. The punishment demonstrated the seriousness of covenant rebellion and the need to remove evil from the community.

Deu 22:22 If a man is found lying with another man’s wife,…
Ezk 18:13 He engages in usury and takes excess interest.…
Rom 1:32 Although they know God’s righteous decree…

their blood is upon them.

Those condemned bore responsibility for their own guilt and the judgment brought upon them; their blood was upon them, signifying accountability for their own sin. The penalty was not arbitrary but followed their deliberate violation of God’s law.

Ezk 33:4-5 Then if anyone hears the sound of the horn…
Jos 2:19 If anyone goes out the door of your house into the street,…
Act 18:6 But when they opposed and insulted him,…

If a man marries both a woman and her mother,

If a man marries both a woman and her mother, he joins two generations of the same family in a union God forbids. Such a marriage corrupts the proper order of family life and dishonors the household.

Deu 27:23 Cursed is he who sleeps with his mother-in-law.…
Lev 18:17 You must not have sexual relations with both a woman…

it is depraved.

The relationship is treated as a serious moral evil, not merely a social offense. It violates the holiness God required of Israel.

Deu 22:21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house,…
1Co 5:1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality…
Ezk 22:10-11 In you they have uncovered the nakedness of their fathers;…

Both he and they must be burned in the fire,

Both the man and the women involved were subject to the prescribed judgment. This severe penalty emphasized that such sexual sin could not be tolerated within the covenant community.

Lev 21:9 If a priest’s daughter defiles herself by prostituting…
Gen 38:24 About three months later, Judah was told…
Jos 7:25 “Why have you brought this trouble upon us?” said Joshua.…

so that there will be no depravity among you.

Israel was to remove such corruption rather than allow it to spread and defile the nation.

Deu 13:5 Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death,…
Deu 17:7 The hands of the witnesses shall be the first…
1Co 5:13 God will judge those outside. “Expel the wicked man…”…

If a man lies carnally with an animal,

Bestiality violated the order God established between humanity and the animal world. Human sexuality was to be confined to marriage and not joined with practices associated with pagan corruption and moral disorder.

Lev 18:23 You must not lie carnally with any animal,…
Exo 22:19 Whoever lies with an animal must surely be put to death.
Deu 27:21 Cursed is he who lies with any animal.…

he must be put to death.

Israel’s civil law treated the offense as a grave defilement requiring removal from the covenant community. The penalty upheld the holiness God required of His people and marked the act as incompatible with life among them.

Lev 24:17 And if a man takes the life of anyone else,…
Num 35:30 If anyone kills a person, the murderer is to be put to death…
Exo 21:12 Whoever strikes and kills a man must surely be put to death.

And you are also to kill the animal.

Though the animal bore no moral guilt, it was destroyed to remove all connection with the offense and to prevent the incident from becoming a source of continued defilement or remembrance within the community.

Exo 21:28-29 If an ox gores a man or woman to death,…
1Sa 15:3 Now go and attack the Amalekites and devote…
Deu 13:15 you must surely put the inhabitants of that city…

If a woman approaches any animal to mate with it,

Such conduct violated the order God established in creation by confusing the distinction between human beings and animals. It was associated with the corrupt practices of surrounding pagan cultures, from which Israel was to remain separate.

Lev 18:23 You must not lie carnally with any animal,…
Exo 22:19 Whoever lies with an animal must surely be put to death.
Deu 27:21 Cursed is he who lies with any animal.…

you must kill both the woman and the animal.

The penalty removed the defilement from the covenant community. The animal was not held morally accountable, but its death ensured that nothing connected with the offense remained or could be used again.

1Sa 15:3 Now go and attack the Amalekites and devote…
Deu 13:15 you must surely put the inhabitants of that city…
Jos 7:24-25 Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan…

They must surely be put to death;

The prescribed death penalty underscores the gravity of rebellion against God’s design for human sexuality and Israel’s call to reflect His holiness in public life.

Num 35:31 You are not to accept a ransom for the life of a murderer…
Lev 24:17 And if a man takes the life of anyone else,…
Exo 21:12 Whoever strikes and kills a man must surely be put to death.

their blood is upon them.

Those who committed the act bore responsibility for their own guilt and the judgment it brought.

1Ki 2:37 On the day you go out and cross the Kidron Valley,…
Jos 2:19 If anyone goes out the door of your house into the street,…
2Sa 1:16 For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood…

If a man marries his sister, whether the daughter of his father or of his mother,

God’s law forbids sexual union between both full and half-siblings. Such relationships violated the order established for marriage and corrupted the boundaries of the household.

Lev 18:9 You must not have sexual relations with your sister,…
Deu 27:22 Cursed is he who sleeps with his sister,…

and they have sexual relations, it is a disgrace.

Incest brought shame upon those involved and dishonor upon the family and community. It was a serious rebellion against God’s standards for sexual purity.

2Sa 13:12 “No, my brother!” she cried. “Do not violate me”…
Gen 19:31-36 One day the older daughter said to the younger,…
1Co 5:1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality…

They must be cut off in the sight of their people.

The offenders were to be publicly removed, or “cut off,” from Israel—by excommunication or even death, depending on the offense—showing that such sin could not be tolerated within the covenant community.

Num 15:30-31 But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native…
Exo 31:14 Keep the Sabbath, for it is holy. Anyone who profanes it…
Gen 17:14 But if any male is not circumcised, he will be…

He has uncovered the nakedness of his sister;

Sexual relations with a sister violated her dignity and the protective boundaries God placed around close family relationships.

Ezk 22:10-11 In you they have uncovered the nakedness of their fathers;…
Gen 9:22-23 And Ham, the father of Canaan,…
Isa 47:3 Your nakedness will be uncovered and your shame…

he shall bear his iniquity.

The man remained accountable for his sin and its consequences before God and the people.

Lev 5:17 If someone sins and violates any of the LORD’s commandments…
Num 9:13 But if a man who is ceremonially clean…
Ezk 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die.…

If a man lies with a menstruating woman

Menstruation rendered a woman ceremonially unclean under Israel’s purity laws. Sexual relations during this period disregarded the boundaries God established for Israel’s holiness.

Lev 18:19 You must not approach a woman during her menstrual period…
Ezk 18:6 He does not eat at the mountain or look to the idols…
Ezk 22:10 In you they have uncovered the nakedness of their fathers;…

and has sexual relations with her,

The prohibition applied to both participants, since both knowingly took part in an act forbidden during her menstrual uncleanness.

Lev 15:24 If a man lies with her and her menstrual flow…
Lev 15:18 If a man lies with a woman and there is an emission of semen…

he has exposed the source of her flow,

Sexual union during menstruation involved contact with blood, which belonged within the regulations governing ritual purity and the sanctity of life.

Lev 15:25-27 When a woman has a discharge of her blood for many days…
Mrk 5:25-29 And a woman was there who had suffered from bleeding……
Luk 8:43-44 including a woman who had suffered from bleeding…

and she has uncovered the source of her blood.

The woman likewise bore responsibility for participating in what the law prohibited. The command treated the offense as a deliberate violation by both persons.

Mrk 5:30-34 At once Jesus was aware that power had gone out from Him.…
Mat 9:20-22 Suddenly a woman who had suffered from bleeding…
Luk 8:45-48 “Who touched Me?” Jesus asked. But they all denied it.…

Both of them must be cut off from among their people.

“Cut off” marked a severe covenant judgment, removing the offenders from the privileges and fellowship of the people of Israel. Their sin was not merely private; it defiled the holiness God required of the covenant community.

Num 15:30-31 But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native…
Lev 7:20-21 If anyone who is unclean eats meat from the peace offering…
Num 19:13 Anyone who touches a human corpse and fails…

You must not have sexual relations with the sister of your mother or your father,

Israel’s holiness laws guarded the boundaries God established for marriage and family life. Sexual relations with an aunt violated the proper order of the household and brought dishonor upon close relatives.

Lev 18:12 You must not have sexual relations with your father’s sister;…
Lev 18:13 You must not have sexual relations with your mother’s sister…

for it is exposing one’s own kin;

Such conduct treated a near family member as though she were outside the protected circle of the family. It corrupted relationships meant to be marked by honor, trust, and restraint.

Lev 18:6 None of you are to approach any close relative…
Lev 18:17 You must not have sexual relations with both a woman…

both shall bear their iniquity.

Both participants were accountable before God for deliberate disobedience. Their sin carried guilt and required the judgment prescribed under Israel’s covenant law.

Num 5:31 The husband will be free from guilt, but…
Lev 17:16 But if he does not wash his clothes and bathe himself,…

If a man lies with his uncle’s wife,

Sexual relations with an aunt by marriage violated God’s order for the household, dishonoring both the marriage covenant and the uncle’s place within the family.

Lev 18:14 You must not dishonor your father’s brother…
Deu 22:30 A man is not to marry his father’s wife…
Deu 27:20 Cursed is he who sleeps with his father’s wife……

he has uncovered the nakedness of his uncle.

Though the sin involved the uncle’s wife, it was also a direct offense against the uncle, whose marriage had been violated. The act brought shame upon the family and defiled the community.

Lev 18:6 None of you are to approach any close relative…
Ezk 22:10 In you they have uncovered the nakedness of their fathers;…
Lev 18:7 You must not expose the nakedness of your father…

They will bear their sin;

Both participants were accountable to God and subject to judgment for their transgression.

Lev 5:17 If someone sins and violates any of the LORD’s commandments…
Lev 7:18 If any of the meat from his peace offering is eaten…
Num 14:34 In keeping with the forty days you spied out the land,…

they shall die childless.

Their sin would result in the loss of descendants and the end of their family line, a severe judgment in Israel where offspring represented inheritance, remembrance, covenant continuity, and the continuation of one’s legacy.

Jer 22:30 This is what the LORD says: “Enroll this man as childless,…
2Sa 6:23 And Michal the daughter of Saul had no children…
Gen 20:18 for on account of Abraham’s wife Sarah, the LORD…

If a man marries his brother’s wife,

He violates the marital boundary God established within the family. Israel’s laws protected household order, inheritance, and the honor due to one’s brother. An exception was levirate marriage, in which a man whose brother died without a son married the widow to preserve the deceased brother’s family line.

Deu 25:5-6 When brothers dwell together and one of them dies…
Mat 22:24-26 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses declared that if a man dies……
Rut 4:5-10 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the land……

it is an act of impurity.

Such a union defiled those involved because it treated a brother’s marriage covenant with contempt. It brought disorder into the family and violated the holiness required of God’s people.

Lev 18:24-25 Do not defile yourselves by any of these practices,…
Ezk 22:11 One man commits an abomination with his neighbor’s wife;…
1Co 5:1 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality…

He has uncovered the nakedness of his brother;

“He has uncovered the nakedness of his brother” means that sexual relations with a brother’s wife dishonor the brother and violate the sanctity of the marriage bond.

Lev 18:16 You must not have sexual relations with your brother’s wife;…

they shall be childless.

The judgment meant they would have no enduring offspring or family line from such an unlawful union. In a society where children carried forward a household’s name, inheritance, and covenant place within Israel, this was a serious consequence.

Gen 38:8-10 Then Judah said to Onan, “Sleep with your brother’s wife.…

Distinguish between Clean and Unclean

You are therefore to keep all My statutes and ordinances,

Israel was obligated to obey the whole body of God’s commands, including the moral, ceremonial, and civil requirements that governed life in covenant with Him. Their obedience marked them as God’s holy people and distinguished them from the nations around them.

Lev 18:4-5 You are to practice My judgments and keep My statutes…
Deu 11:32 be careful to follow all the statutes and ordinances…
Num 15:39-40 These will serve as tassels for you to look at,…

so that the land where I am bringing you to live

Canaan was the land God promised to Abraham’s descendants, a gift in which Israel was to live under His rule. Its peace, security, and fruitfulness were tied to their faithfulness to the covenant.

Deu 6:10 And when the LORD your God brings you into the land…
Deu 11:31 For you are about to cross the Jordan…
Exo 3:17 And I have promised to bring you out of your affliction…

will not vomit you out.

The land is pictured as rejecting those who fill it with idolatry, sexual immorality, bloodshed, and other abominations. The Canaanites had been driven out for such sins, and Israel would face the same judgment if they followed their practices. This warning anticipated Israel’s later exile from the land because of persistent rebellion.

Lev 18:28 So if you defile the land, it will vomit you out…
Lev 18:25 Even the land has become defiled, so I am punishing it…
Deu 4:25-27 After you have children and grandchildren…

You must not follow the statutes of the nations I am driving out before you.

Israel was forbidden to adopt the religious and moral practices of the Canaanite peoples. Their idolatry included rituals marked by sexual immorality, occult practices, and child sacrifice. God had chosen Israel to live under His law and to remain separate from the corruption of the land.

Deu 18:9 When you enter the land that the LORD your God gives you,…
Deu 12:30-31 be careful not to be ensnared by their ways…
Lev 18:3 You must not follow the practices of the land of Egypt…

Because they did all these things, I abhorred them.

God’s judgment against these nations was the result of their persistent evil, not an arbitrary act. Their conduct had filled the land with violence and defilement. Israel was warned not to repeat the sins that brought judgment on the Canaanites, but to remain faithful to the Lord who had given them the land.

Lev 18:24-28 Do not defile yourselves by any of these practices,…
Deu 18:12 For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD.…
Psa 106:40-41 So the anger of the LORD burned against His people…

But I have told you that you will inherit their land,

God would give Israel the land of Canaan as He had promised to the patriarchs. The coming conquest would fulfill His covenant and establish the nation in the land appointed for them.

Jos 23:4 See, I have allotted as an inheritance to your tribes…
Psa 78:55 He drove out nations before them and apportioned……

since I will give it to you as an inheritance—

The land was God’s gift, not a reward Israel had earned. Their possession of it depended on His faithfulness and required their continued obedience to Him.

Deu 4:38 to drive out before you nations greater and mightier…
Jos 1:6 Be strong and courageous, for you shall give…

a land flowing with milk and honey.

Canaan was a productive land, capable of supporting herds, crops, and settled communities. Its abundance stood in contrast to Israel’s years in the wilderness and displayed God’s provision.

Exo 3:8 I have come down to rescue them from the hand of Egyptians…
Exo 33:3 Go up to a land flowing with milk and honey.…
Exo 13:5 And when the LORD brings you into the land of the Canaanites…

I am the LORD your God,

Israel belonged to Yahweh, the God who delivered them from Egypt and bound Himself to them by covenant. His authority over them required exclusive loyalty.

Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Ezk 20:5 This is what the Lord GOD says: On the day I chose Israel…

who has set you apart from the peoples.

Israel was separated from the surrounding nations in worship, conduct, and identity. Their distinct life was meant to preserve devotion to the Lord in the land He was giving them.

1Ki 8:53 For You, O Lord GOD, have set them apart from all…
Deu 14:2 for you are a people holy to the LORD your God.…

You are therefore to distinguish between clean and unclean animals and birds.

Israel’s dietary distinctions marked the nation as separate from the surrounding peoples and reinforced the holiness required of those who belonged to the Lord. These commands governed ordinary life, teaching that devotion to God extended beyond worship gatherings into daily habits.

Lev 11:46-47 This is the law regarding animals, birds…
Ezk 44:23 They are to teach My people the difference…
Deu 14:11-20 You may eat any clean bird,…

Do not become contaminated by any animal or bird, or by anything that crawls on the ground;

Contact with what God declared unclean brought ritual impurity and could restrict participation in Israel’s worship until the prescribed cleansing was completed. The laws upheld the order God established for His covenant people and guarded the holiness of the community.

Lev 11:43-45 Do not defile yourselves by any crawling creature;…
Lev 5:2 Or if a person touches anything unclean,…
Isa 52:11 Depart, depart, go out from there! Touch no unclean thing;…

I have set these apart as unclean for you.

The classification rested on God’s authority rather than human preference. By observing these distinctions, Israel acknowledged that the Lord had chosen them for Himself and called them to live differently from the nations around them.

Gen 7:2-3 You are to take with you seven pairs of every kind…
Act 10:14-15 “No, Lord!” Peter answered. “I have never eaten…
Rom 14:14 I am convinced and fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus…

You are to be holy to Me

Israel was called to belong wholly to the Lord, set apart for His purposes and living in a way that reflected His nature, with conduct and worship reflecting His will rather than the customs of Canaan.

Exo 22:31 You are to be My holy people. You must not eat the meat…
Lev 19:2 Speak to the whole congregation of Israel and tell them:…
1Pe 1:15-16 But just as He who called you is holy, so be holy…

because I, the LORD, am holy,

The Lord’s own purity and righteousness established the standard for His people. His character permitted no compromise with idolatry, sexual immorality, injustice, or occult practices.

Lev 11:44 For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves…
Psa 99:9 Exalt the LORD our God and worship at His holy mountain,…
Isa 6:3 “Holy, holy, holy is the LORD of Hosts;…”…

and I have set you apart from the nations

God chose Israel from among the peoples to live under His covenant and commands. Their distinct life was meant to display their exclusive allegiance to Him.

Deu 7:6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God.…
Num 23:9 For I see them from atop the rocky cliffs,…
Exo 19:5-6 Now if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant,…

to be My own.

Israel was the Lord’s treasured possession, claimed by Him for His purposes and placed under His protection, discipline, and blessing.

1Pe 2:9 But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood…
Deu 26:18 And today the LORD has proclaimed that you are His people…
Mal 3:17 They will be Mine,” says the LORD of Hosts…

A man or a woman who is a medium or spiritist

Mediums and spiritists claimed access to the dead or to spiritual powers apart from God. Such practices were common among Israel’s pagan neighbors and were closely tied to divination, idolatry, and occult worship. Israel was commanded to reject them completely and seek the Lord rather than hidden spiritual sources.

Deu 18:10-12 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son…
Lev 19:31 You must not turn to mediums or spiritists;…
Isa 8:19 When men tell you to consult mediums and spiritists…

must surely be put to death.

Under the covenant law given to Israel, this offense carried the death penalty because it openly defied God’s authority and threatened the spiritual purity of the nation. The judgment showed the seriousness of leading others toward forbidden spiritual practices.

Exo 22:18 You must not allow a sorceress to live.
Deu 18:20 But if any prophet dares to speak a message in My name…
Deu 13:5 Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death,…

They shall be stoned;

Stoning involved the community in carrying out the lawful judgment. Its public nature demonstrated that rebellion against God’s commands was not a private matter when it endangered the covenant community.

Deu 17:5 you must bring out to your gates the man or woman…
Num 15:35-36 And the LORD said to Moses, “The man must surely be put…
Deu 13:10 Stone him to death for trying to turn you away…

their blood is upon them.’”

The offenders bore responsibility for their own death because they knowingly committed an act God had forbidden. The judgment was not arbitrary; it followed their deliberate choice to practice what God had declared detestable.

Ezk 33:4-5 Then if anyone hears the sound of the horn…
Ezk 33:8-9 If I say to the wicked, ‘O wicked man, you will surely die,’…
2Sa 1:16 For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood…
