Psalms 107–150

Thanksgiving for Deliverance
(Matthew 8:23–27; Mark 4:35–41; Luke 8:22–25)

הֹד֣וּ (Give thanks) לַיהוָ֣ה (to YHWH), כִּי־ (for) ט֑וֹב (He is good),

כִּ֖י (for) לְעוֹלָ֣ם (forever) חַסְדּֽוֹ׃ (is His loving devotion).

2  יֹ֭אמְרוּ (Let say so) גְּאוּלֵ֣י (the redeemed) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH),

אֲשֶׁ֥ר (whom) גְּ֝אָלָ֗ם (He has redeemed) מִיַּד־ (from the hand) צָֽר׃ (of the enemy),

3  וּֽמֵאֲרָצ֗וֹת (and from the lands) קִ֫בְּצָ֥ם (He has gathered them),

מִמִּזְרָ֥ח (from the east) וּמִֽמַּעֲרָ֑ב (and from the west), מִצָּפ֥וֹן (from the north) וּמִיָּֽם׃ (and from the sea).

4  תָּע֣וּ (They wandered) בַ֭מִּדְבָּר (in the wilderness) בִּישִׁימ֣וֹן (in a desert) דָּ֑רֶךְ (by the way);

עִ֥יר (a city) מ֝וֹשָׁ֗ב (of dwelling) לֹ֣א (not) מָצָֽאוּ׃ (did they find).

5  רְעֵבִ֥ים (Hungry) גַּם־ (and) צְמֵאִ֑ים (thirsty),

נַ֝פְשָׁ֗ם (their soul) בָּהֶ֥ם (in them) תִּתְעַטָּֽף׃ (grew faint).

6  וַיִּצְעֲק֣וּ (And they cried out) אֶל־ (to) יְ֭הוָה (YHWH) בַּצַּ֣ר (in the distress) לָהֶ֑ם (for them);

מִ֝מְּצֽוּקוֹתֵיהֶ֗ם (from their straits) יַצִּילֵֽם׃ (He delivered them).

7  וַ֭יַּֽדְרִיכֵם (And He made them tread) בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ (on a path) יְשָׁרָ֑ה (straight),

לָ֝לֶ֗כֶת (to walk) אֶל־ (toward) עִ֥יר (a city) מוֹשָֽׁב׃ (of dwelling).

8  יוֹד֣וּ (Let them give thanks) לַיהוָ֣ה (to YHWH) חַסְדּ֑וֹ (for His loving devotion)

וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו (and His wonders) לִבְנֵ֥י (to the sons) אָדָֽם׃ (of man)!

9  כִּי־ (For) הִ֭שְׂבִּיעַ (He satisfies) נֶ֣פֶשׁ (the soul) שֹׁקֵקָ֑ה (rushing),

וְנֶ֥פֶשׁ (and the soul) רְ֝עֵבָה (hungry) מִלֵּא־ (He fills) טֽוֹב׃ (with goodness).

10  יֹ֭שְׁבֵי (They are sitting) חֹ֣שֶׁךְ (in darkness) וְצַלְמָ֑וֶת (and in the shadow of death),

אֲסִירֵ֖י (prisoners) עֳנִ֣י (in affliction) וּבַרְזֶֽל׃ (and irons),

11  כִּֽי־ (because) הִמְר֥וּ (they rebelled against) אִמְרֵי־ (the words) אֵ֑ל (of God),

וַעֲצַ֖ת (and the counsel) עֶלְי֣וֹן (of the Most High) נָאָֽצוּ׃ (and they despised).

12  וַיַּכְנַ֣ע (And He humbled) בֶּעָמָ֣ל (with labor) לִבָּ֑ם (their heart);

כָּ֝שְׁל֗וּ (they fell down), וְאֵ֣ין (and no one) עֹזֵֽר׃ (was helping).

13  וַיִּזְעֲק֣וּ (And they cried out) אֶל־ (to) יְ֭הוָה (YHWH) בַּצַּ֣ר (in the distress) לָהֶ֑ם (for them);

מִ֝מְּצֻֽקוֹתֵיהֶ֗ם (and from their straits) יוֹשִׁיעֵֽם׃ (He saved them).

14  יֽ֭וֹצִיאֵם (He brought them forth) מֵחֹ֣שֶׁךְ (from darkness) וְצַלְמָ֑וֶת (and the shadow of death),

וּמוֹסְר֖וֹתֵיהֶ֣ם (and their bonds) יְנַתֵּֽק׃ (He broke away).

15  יוֹד֣וּ (Let them give thanks) לַיהוָ֣ה (to the LORD) חַסְדּ֑וֹ (for His loving devotion)

וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו (and His wonders) לִבְנֵ֥י (to the sons) אָדָֽם׃ (of man)!

16  כִּֽי־ (For) שִׁ֭בַּר (He has broken down) דַּלְת֣וֹת (doors) נְחֹ֑שֶׁת (of bronze),

וּבְרִיחֵ֖י (and bars) בַרְזֶ֣ל (of iron) גִּדֵּֽעַ׃ (He has cut through).

17  אֱ֭וִלִים (Fools) מִדֶּ֣רֶךְ (from the path) פִּשְׁעָ֑ם (of their transgression),

וּֽ֝מֵעֲוֺֽנֹתֵיהֶ֗ם (and by their iniquities), יִתְעַנּֽוּ׃ (they were afflicted).

18  כָּל־ (All) אֹ֭כֶל (food) תְּתַעֵ֣ב (abhorred) נַפְשָׁ֑ם (their soul),

וַ֝יַּגִּ֗יעוּ (and they drew near) עַד־ (to) שַׁ֥עֲרֵי (the gates) מָֽוֶת׃ (of death).

19  וַיִּזְעֲק֣וּ (And they cried out) אֶל־ (to) יְ֭הוָה (YHWH) בַּצַּ֣ר (in the distress) לָהֶ֑ם (for them);

מִ֝מְּצֻֽקוֹתֵיהֶ֗ם (and from their straits) יוֹשִׁיעֵֽם׃ (He saved them).

20  יִשְׁלַ֣ח (He sent) דְּ֭בָרוֹ (His word) וְיִרְפָּאֵ֑ם (and healed them),

וִֽ֝ימַלֵּ֗ט (and He rescued them) מִשְּׁחִיתוֹתָֽם׃׆ (from the Pit).

21  יוֹד֣וּ (Let them give thanks) לַיהוָ֣ה (to the LORD) חַסְדּ֑וֹ (for His loving devotion)

וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו (and His wonders) לִבְנֵ֥י (to the sons) אָדָֽם׃׆ (of man)!

22  וְ֭יִזְבְּחוּ (And let them sacrifice) זִבְחֵ֣י (sacrifices) תוֹדָ֑ה (of thanksgiving)

וִֽיסַפְּר֖וּ (and recount) מַעֲשָׂ֣יו (His works) בְּרִנָּֽה׃׆ (with rejoicing).

23  יוֹרְדֵ֣י (Those going down) הַ֭יָּם (to the sea) בָּאֳנִיּ֑וֹת (in ships),

עֹשֵׂ֥י (doing) מְ֝לָאכָ֗ה (business) בְּמַ֣יִם (on the waters) רַבִּֽים׃׆ (great),

24  הֵ֣מָּה (they) רָ֭אוּ (have seen) מַעֲשֵׂ֣י (the works) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH)

וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו (and His wonders) בִּמְצוּלָֽה׃׆ (in the deep).

25  וַיֹּ֗אמֶר (And He spoke) וַֽ֭יַּעֲמֵד (and stationed) ר֣וּחַ (the wind), סְעָרָ֑ה (a tempest),

וַתְּרוֹמֵ֥ם (and which even lifted high) גַּלָּֽיו׃׆ (the waves).

26  יַעֲל֣וּ (They went up) שָׁ֭מַיִם (to the heavens), יֵרְד֣וּ (they went down) תְהוֹמ֑וֹת (to the depths);

נַ֝פְשָׁ֗ם (their soul) בְּרָעָ֥ה (in evil) תִתְמוֹגָֽג׃ (melted).

27  יָח֣וֹגּוּ (They reel) וְ֭יָנוּעוּ (and stagger) כַּשִּׁכּ֑וֹר (like the drunkard),

וְכָל־ (and all) חָ֝כְמָתָ֗ם (their wisdom) תִּתְבַּלָּֽע׃ (is swallowed up).

28  וַיִּצְעֲק֣וּ (And they cried out) אֶל־ (to) יְ֭הוָה (YHWH) בַּצַּ֣ר (in the distress) לָהֶ֑ם (for them),

וּֽ֝מִמְּצֽוּקֹתֵיהֶ֗ם (and from their straits) יוֹצִיאֵֽם׃ (He brought them out).

29  יָקֵ֣ם (He stilled) סְ֭עָרָה (the tempest) לִדְמָמָ֑ה (to a whisper),

וַ֝יֶּחֱשׁ֗וּ (and were hushed) גַּלֵּיהֶֽם׃ (their waves).

30  וַיִּשְׂמְח֥וּ (And they rejoiced) כִֽי־ (because) יִשְׁתֹּ֑קוּ (they grew quiet),

וַ֝יַּנְחֵ֗ם (and He guided them) אֶל־ (to) מְח֥וֹז (the haven) חֶפְצָֽם׃ (of their desire).

31  יוֹד֣וּ (Let them give thanks) לַיהוָ֣ה (to the LORD) חַסְדּ֑וֹ (for His loving devotion)

וְ֝נִפְלְאוֹתָ֗יו (and His wonders) לִבְנֵ֥י (to the sons) אָדָֽם׃ (of man)!

32  וִֽ֭ירֹמְמוּהוּ (And let them exalt Him) בִּקְהַל־ (in the assembly) עָ֑ם (of the people),

וּבְמוֹשַׁ֖ב (and in the seat) זְקֵנִ֣ים (of the elders) יְהַלְלֽוּהוּ׃ (praise Him).

33  יָשֵׂ֣ם (He turns) נְהָר֣וֹת (rivers) לְמִדְבָּ֑ר (into a wilderness)

וּמֹצָ֥אֵי (and outpourings) מַ֝֗יִם (of waters) לְצִמָּאֽוֹן׃ (into thirsty ground),

34  אֶ֣רֶץ (a land) פְּ֭רִי (of fruit) לִמְלֵחָ֑ה (into salty ground),

מֵ֝רָעַ֗ת (from the wickedness) יֹ֣שְׁבֵי (of those dwelling) בָֽהּ׃ (in it).

35  יָשֵׂ֣ם (He turns) מִ֭דְבָּר (the desert) לַֽאֲגַם־ (into pools) מַ֑יִם (of water),

וְאֶ֥רֶץ (and a land) צִ֝יָּ֗ה (of dryness) לְמֹצָ֥אֵי (into springs) מָֽיִם׃ (of waters).

36  וַיּ֣וֹשֶׁב (And He makes to dwell) שָׁ֣ם (there) רְעֵבִ֑ים (the hungry),

וַ֝יְכוֹנְנ֗וּ (that they may establish) עִ֣יר (a city for) מוֹשָֽׁב׃ (a dwelling place);

37  וַיִּזְרְע֣וּ (and there they sow) שָׂ֭דוֹת (fields) וַיִּטְּע֣וּ (and plant) כְרָמִ֑ים (vineyards),

וַ֝יַּעֲשׂ֗וּ (that they may yield) פְּרִ֣י (the fruit) תְבֽוּאָה׃ (of produce).

38  וַיְבָרֲכֵ֣ם (And He blesses them) וַיִּרְבּ֣וּ (and they multiply) מְאֹ֑ד (exceedingly),

וּ֝בְהֶמְתָּ֗ם (and their cattle) לֹ֣א (not) יַמְעִֽיט׃ (does He let diminish).

39  וַיִּמְעֲט֥וּ (When they are diminished) וַיָּשֹׁ֑חוּ (and brought low)

מֵעֹ֖צֶר (from oppression), רָעָ֣ה (evil), וְיָגֽוֹן׃׆ (and sorrow).

40  שֹׁפֵ֣ךְ (He pours out) בּ֭וּז (contempt) עַל־ (on) נְדִיבִ֑ים (nobles)

וַ֝יַּתְעֵ֗ם (and causes them to wander) בְּתֹ֣הוּ (in a wasteland) לֹא־ (without) דָֽרֶךְ׃ (a path).

41  וַיְשַׂגֵּ֣ב (And He sets on high) אֶבְי֣וֹן (for the needy) מֵע֑וֹנִי (from affliction)

וַיָּ֥שֶׂם (and He places) כַּ֝צֹּ֗אן (as a flock) מִשְׁפָּחֽוֹת׃ (families).

42  יִרְא֣וּ (Let see) יְשָׁרִ֣ים (the upright) וְיִשְׂמָ֑חוּ (and rejoice),

וְכָל־ (and may all) עַ֝וְלָ֗ה (iniquity) קָ֣פְצָה (shut) פִּֽיהָ׃ (its mouth).

43  מִי־ (Him who is) חָכָ֥ם (wise)— וְיִשְׁמָר־ (and let him attend to) אֵ֑לֶּה (these things)

וְ֝יִתְבּֽוֹנְנ֗וּ (and they will consider) חַֽסְדֵ֥י (the loving devotion) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).
