1 John 2
Berean Study Bible

Jesus Our Advocate

My little children,

John addresses his readers with the affection and responsibility of a spiritual father, recognizing them as members of God’s family under his pastoral care.

Gal 4:19 My children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth…
1Jn 3:7 Little children, let no one deceive you:…
Jhn 13:33 Little children, I am with you only a little while longer.…

I am writing these things to you so that you will not sin.

His instruction is intended to guard believers from false teaching and lawless living, calling them to obedience and holiness.

Rom 6:12-13 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body…
Tit 2:11-12 For the grace of God has appeared, bringing salvation…
1Th 4:3-7 For it is God’s will that you should be holy:…

But if anyone does sin,

John recognizes that believers may fall, yet he does not treat sin as acceptable or inevitable.

1Ki 8:46 When they sin against You—for there is no one…
Jas 3:2 We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault…
Ecc 7:20 Surely there is no righteous man on earth…

we have an advocate before the Father—

Jesus represents His people before God, securing their forgiveness through His completed sacrifice and continuing intercession.

Rom 8:34 Who is there to condemn us? For Christ Jesus, who died…
Heb 7:25 Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near…
Heb 4:14-16 Therefore, since we have a great high priest…

Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.

Because He alone is sinless and fully righteous, He is able to stand for sinners before the Father.

Act 7:52 Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to persecute?…
Act 3:14 You rejected the Holy and Righteous One…
1Pe 3:18 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all,…

He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins,

Jesus willingly offered Himself on the cross as the sufficient atoning sacrifice, satisfying God’s wrath against sin. His death fulfilled the sacrifices foreshadowed under the law, accomplishing what animal offerings could never finally secure. He bore the judgment sin deserves, providing forgiveness and reconciliation with God for those who believe.

Rom 3:25 God presented Him as an atoning sacrifice…
Heb 2:17 For this reason He had to be made like His brothers…
1Jn 4:10 And love consists in this: not that we loved God…

and not only for ours

John writes to believers, yet Christ’s saving work was not confined to their congregation, region, or Jewish background. The gospel was never intended for one people alone, but was to be proclaimed among every nation.

Jhn 10:16 I have other sheep that are not of this fold.…
Rom 3:29-30 Is God the God of Jews only? Is He not the God of Gentiles…
Eph 2:14-18 For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one…

but also for the sins of the whole world.

Christ’s sacrifice is sufficient for all humanity, and salvation is genuinely offered to all who receive Him by faith. The whole world remains accountable before God, but no race, nation, or class of people stands beyond the reach of Christ’s atoning work.

Jhn 3:16-17 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…
2Co 5:19 that God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ,…
1Ti 2:3-6 This is good and pleasing in the sight of God our Savior,…

By this we can be sure

John gives believers a clear basis for assurance, not in outward claims alone but in the evidence of a life changed by fellowship with Christ.

1Jn 3:19 And by this we will know that we belong to the truth,…
2Pe 1:10 Therefore, brothers, strive to make your calling and election sure.…
1Jn 5:13 I have written these things to you who believe in the name…

that we have come to know Him:

To know God is to belong to Him through Jesus Christ and to live in a real relationship with Him, not merely to possess information about Him.

Gal 4:9 But now that you know God, or rather are known by God,…
Jhn 17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they may know You…
Jer 31:34 No longer will each man teach his neighbor or his brother…

if we keep His commandments.

Obedience reveals genuine faith and love for God. It is not a means of earning salvation, but the fruit of knowing Christ and submitting to His will.

Jhn 14:15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
Jhn 15:10 If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love…
Deu 6:17 You are to diligently keep the commandments of the LORD…

If anyone says, “I know Him,”

To know God is to belong to Him through faith in Jesus Christ, not merely to profess religious belief or possess knowledge about Him. “Knowing” reflects the Hebrew yada, meaning to know deeply and personally. Such a claim carries the expectation of a life shaped by God’s revealed will.

Tit 1:16 They profess to know God, but by their actions…
Mat 7:21 Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter…
1Jn 4:8 Whoever does not love does not know God…

but does not keep His commandments,

Obedience does not earn salvation, but it reveals whether a profession of faith is genuine. God’s commandments express His character and call His people to love Him and live righteously toward others. Some in the early church claimed spiritual knowledge while rejecting moral accountability.

Jhn 14:15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
Jhn 15:14 You are My friends if you do what I command you.
1Jn 3:24 Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God,…

he is a liar,

A profession that is contradicted by persistent disobedience is false. John’s direct language exposes those who claimed fellowship with God while refusing the authority of His commands.

1Jn 4:20 If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother,…
Jhn 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry…
1Jn 1:10 If we say we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar,…

and the truth is not in him.

God’s truth, made known in Christ, produces obedience in those who receive it. Where there is no desire to follow God’s commands, there is no evidence of a genuine knowledge of Him.

1Jn 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves…
1Jn 1:6 If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in…
2Th 2:10-12 and with every wicked deception directed against those…

But if anyone keeps His word,

“But if anyone keeps His word” describes the obedient life that reveals genuine faith and covenant faithfulness. Such obedience is not mere outward rule-keeping but the response of one who has received God’s grace and submits to His revealed will.

Jhn 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.…
Jhn 15:10 If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love…
1Jn 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments.…

the love of God has been truly perfected in him.

God’s love accomplishes its purpose in believers as it shapes their conduct, producing a life marked by obedience, love, and growing conformity to Christ.

1Jn 4:12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another…
1Jn 4:17 In this way, love has been perfected among us…
1Jn 4:18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love…

By this we know that we are in Him:

A believer’s union with Christ is evidenced by a transformed life. Assurance rests not on claims alone but on continuing faith expressed through obedience to His word.

1Jn 4:13 By this we know that we remain in Him, and He in us:…
1Jn 3:24 Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God,…
1Jn 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come…

Whoever claims to abide in Him

“Whoever claims to abide in Him” refers to anyone who professes an ongoing union with Christ, not merely agreement with Christian truth. John confronts those who claim spiritual knowledge while excusing disobedience, emphasizing that genuine faith increasingly produces a life shaped by Christ’s character and commands.

Jhn 15:4-5 Remain in Me, and I will remain in you…
1Jn 3:24 Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God,…
1Jn 4:13 By this we know that we remain in Him, and He in us:…

must walk as Jesus walked.

Jesus perfectly obeyed the Father, loved others sacrificially, rejected sin, and served with humility. His followers are called to pattern their conduct after His life, demonstrating that their confession of faith is real.

1Pe 2:21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered…
Jhn 13:15 I have set you an example so that you should do as I have…
Eph 5:1-2 Be imitators of God, therefore, as beloved children,…

A New Commandment

Beloved,

John addresses his readers with pastoral affection, treating them as fellow members of God’s family rather than distant hearers.

1Pe 2:11 Beloved, I urge you, as foreigners and exiles,…
Jud 1:17 But you, beloved, remember what was foretold…
1Jn 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test…

I am not writing to you a new commandment,

He does not introduce a new requirement or alter the apostolic gospel they received.

2Jn 1:5 And now I urge you, dear lady—not as a new commandment…
Jhn 13:34 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.…
Jhn 15:12 This is My commandment, that you love one another…

but an old one,

The command had been established in Christ’s teaching and formed part of the church’s earliest instruction.

Lev 19:18 Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against any of your…
Deu 6:5 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart…
Mat 22:37-40 Jesus declared, ‘Love the Lord your God…

which you have had from the beginning.

From their first reception of the gospel, they had been taught to live in obedient love toward one another.

2Jn 1:6 And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments…
1Jn 3:11 This is the message you have heard from the beginning:…
1Jn 1:1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard,…

This commandment is the message you have heard.

What John now urges is the same enduring message proclaimed to them from the start.

1Jn 1:5 And this is the message we have heard from Him…
1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us…
Heb 2:1 We must pay closer attention, therefore,…

Then again, I am also writing to you a new commandment,

Love for fellow believers was taught under God’s law, yet Christ gave it new fullness by making His own sacrificial love the pattern for His people. John reminds the churches that Christian conduct is shaped by the Lord’s example and command.

Jhn 13:34 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.…
Jhn 15:12 This is My commandment, that you love one another…
2Jn 1:5 And now I urge you, dear lady—not as a new commandment…

which is true in Him and also in you.

Christ perfectly fulfilled this commandment in His life and death, and those who belong to Him are to show the same love in their relationships within the church. The truth embodied in Him is to be reflected in them, as His work produces a visible change in those who walk with Him.

Eph 4:21 Surely you heard of Him and were taught in Him…
Jhn 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.…
Col 1:27 To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles…

For the darkness is fading

Sin, spiritual ignorance, and rebellion remain in the world, but their dominion has been broken by Christ’s coming. The old order is passing as the gospel brings people out of darkness into God’s kingdom.

Rom 13:12 The night is nearly over; the day has drawn near.…
Jhn 12:35 Then Jesus told them, “For a little while longer…
Eph 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light…

and the true light is already shining.

Jesus Christ is the true light, revealing God and exposing sin. His light has entered the world through His incarnation, death, resurrection, and the witness of His people, though its final victory will be seen fully at His return.

Jhn 1:9 The true Light, who gives light to everyone,…
Jhn 8:12 Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said,…
Jhn 12:46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one…

If anyone claims to be in the light

A profession of faith in Christ includes a claim to know God and to live under His truth. Light represents God’s holiness, truth, purity, presence, and revealed salvation in Christ.

1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light,…
Mat 5:14-16 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill…
Jhn 8:12 Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said,…

but hates his brother,

Fellow believers belong to the same family of faith and are bound by Christ’s command to love one another. Hatred exposes a contradiction between a person’s confession and conduct, especially amid the divisions troubling the early churches.

1Jn 4:20-21 If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother,…
1Jn 3:14-15 We know that we have passed from death to life…
Lev 19:17-18 You must not harbor hatred against your brother…

he is still in the darkness.

Persistent hatred reveals that a person remains under the influence of sin rather than walking in God’s light. Genuine fellowship with God produces love for His people.

1Jn 1:6 If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in…
Jhn 12:35 Then Jesus told them, “For a little while longer…
Eph 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light…

Whoever loves his brother

Love for fellow believers marks those who belong to Christ. The church is a spiritual family, and genuine faith is shown in faithful care, forgiveness, and concern for one another.

1Jn 3:14 We know that we have passed from death to life…
1Th 4:9 Now about brotherly love, you do not need…
Jhn 13:34-35 A new commandment I give you: Love one another.…

remains in the light,

Such love reflects a life governed by God’s truth rather than sin. Those who walk in the light live openly before God and seek to obey His commands.

1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light,…
Eph 5:8-10 For you were once darkness, but now you are light…
Jhn 12:35-36 Then Jesus told them, “For a little while longer…

and there is no cause of stumbling in him.

Love guards against conduct that harms others, weakens their faith, or draws them toward sin. A believer who loves his brothers promotes unity and gives no occasion for spiritual offense.

Pro 4:12 When you walk, your steps will not be impeded;…
Psa 119:165 Abundant peace belongs to those who love Your law;…
Rom 14:13 Therefore let us stop judging one another.…

But whoever hates his brother

Hatred toward a fellow believer contradicts the love God requires within His people. Such hostility reveals a heart resisting Christ’s command to love one another.

1Jn 3:15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, …
1Jn 4:20 If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother,…
Lev 19:17 You must not harbor hatred against your brother…

is in the darkness

Hatred places a person in moral and spiritual darkness, separated from the truth and fellowship found in Christ.

Jhn 3:19 And this is the verdict: The Light has come into the world……
Eph 5:8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light…
Col 1:13 He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness…

and walks in the darkness.

This describes an ongoing pattern of life shaped by sin rather than obedience to God. Hatred is not a harmless private feeling; it directs conduct away from God’s will.

1Jn 1:6 If we say we have fellowship with Him yet walk in…
Psa 82:5 They do not know or understand; they wander in the darkness;…
Isa 59:9-10 Therefore justice is far from us, and righteousness…

He does not know where he is going,

Spiritual darkness leaves a person without clear direction or sound judgment. Apart from God’s truth, he cannot rightly discern the path that leads to life.

Jhn 12:35 Then Jesus told them, “For a little while longer…
Jhn 11:10 But if anyone walks at night, he will stumble,…
Pro 4:19 But the way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom;…

because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

Continued hatred blinds the heart to God’s light, concealing both the seriousness of sin and the way of repentance.

2Co 4:4 The god of this age has blinded the minds of unbelievers,…
Eph 4:18 They are darkened in their understanding…
Isa 6:10 Make the hearts of this people calloused; deafen their ears…

I am writing to you, little children,

John addresses his readers with fatherly affection, recognizing them as members of God’s family under his pastoral care. The term includes believers at every stage of spiritual growth and recalls the humility and dependence that mark those who belong to Christ. His written instruction preserves apostolic truth at a time when false teaching threatened the churches.

Jhn 13:33 Little children, I am with you only a little while longer.…
1Co 4:14 I am not writing this to shame you, but to warn you…
Gal 4:19 My children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth…

because your sins have been forgiven

Their standing before God rests on Christ’s completed work, not on personal merit or maturity. Forgiveness removes guilt and establishes reconciliation with God, providing the assurance needed to resist error and remain faithful.

Col 1:14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Eph 1:7 In Him we have redemption through His blood,…
Act 26:18 open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness…

through His name.

Forgiveness comes through Jesus Christ alone, whose name represents His authority, person, and saving work. He is the only mediator between God and man, and all who trust in Him receive the salvation He secured by His death and resurrection.

Act 10:43 All the prophets testify about Him…
Luk 24:47 and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins…
Jhn 20:31 But these are written so that you may believe…

I am writing to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning.

Fathers are mature believers whose long walk with Christ has given them settled knowledge of the eternal Son. Their strength lies in knowing Christ, who existed before creation and remains unchanged.

1Jn 1:1-2 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard,…
Jhn 17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they may know You…
Col 1:17 He is before all things, and in Him all things…

I am writing to you, young men, because you have overcome the evil one.

Young men represent believers marked by spiritual strength and active resistance against Satan’s opposition. Their victory comes through abiding in Christ and standing firmly in the truth.

1Jn 5:18 We know that anyone born of God does not keep on sinning;…
Rev 12:11 They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb…
Jas 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil,…

I have written to you, children, because you know the Father.

Children belong to God’s family and know Him as Father through faith in His Son. Their identity rests on God’s care, forgiveness, and fatherly love.

Mat 11:27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father.…
Jhn 14:7 If you had known Me, you would know My Father as well…
Gal 4:6 And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son…

I have written to you, fathers, because you know Him who is from the beginning.

The fathers are mature believers whose long walk with Christ has given them settled knowledge of the eternal Son. They have remained faithful through trials, false teaching, and the changing circumstances of the churches, making them able to steady and instruct younger believers.

1Jn 1:1-2 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard,…
Jhn 1:1-2 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God…
Jhn 17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they may know You…

I have written to you, young men, because you are strong,

The young men represent believers marked by spiritual vigor and readiness to stand firm in conflict. Their strength comes from faith in Christ and endurance in obedience amid temptation and opposition.

2Ti 2:1 You therefore, my child, be strong in the grace…
1Co 16:13 Be on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Be men of courage.…
Eph 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power.

and the word of God abides in you,

God’s revealed truth has taken root in their lives, shaping their convictions and conduct. Because they hold fast to the apostolic message, they are equipped to recognize error and remain faithful to Christ.

Jhn 15:7 If you remain in Me and My words remain in you,…
Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you…
Psa 119:11 I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin……

and you have overcome the evil one.

Their victory over Satan is grounded in Christ’s victory and demonstrated by their refusal to abandon the truth. Though the conflict continues, the evil one has not overcome those who remain in the Son.

1Jn 5:4-5 because everyone born of God overcomes the world.…
Rev 12:11 They have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb…
Rom 16:20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.…

Do Not Love the World

Do not love the world or anything in the world.

The world is the fallen order of human life that rejects God and promotes sinful desires, pride, and self-rule. God’s creation remains good, but believers must not give their loyalty to values and pursuits that oppose His will.

Jas 4:4 You adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship…
Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed…
1Jn 5:19 We know that we are of God, and that the whole world…

If anyone loves the world,

Love for the world is shown by embracing its desires, standards, and ambitions as the ruling priorities of life. Such devotion competes with faithful obedience to God and cannot be treated as harmless.

2Ti 4:10 because Demas, in his love of this world, has deserted me…
Mat 6:24 No one can serve two masters: Either he will hate the one…
Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own…

the love of the Father is not in him.

A settled attachment to the world reveals that a person does not truly love the Father. God calls His people to examine their affections, turn from worldly loyalties, and live under His rule.

Jhn 5:42 but I know you, that you do not have the love…
1Jn 4:20 If anyone says, “I love God,” but hates his brother,…
Jud 1:21 keep yourselves in the love of God as you await the mercy…

For all that is in the world—

The world represents humanity’s fallen order, shaped by rebellion against God and opposed to His rule.

Jas 4:4 You adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship…
Jhn 15:19 If you were of the world, it would love you as its own…
Rom 12:2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed…

Fallen nature seeks gratification apart from God, drawing people toward immoral appetites and sinful conduct.

Rom 13:14 Instead, clothe yourselves with the Lord Jesus Christ,…

Jos 7:21 When I saw among the spoils a beautiful cloak from Shinar…

and the pride of life—

Human pride boasts in wealth, power, achievement, and self-sufficiency, seeking honor apart from the Creator.

Pro 16:18 Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit…
1Ti 6:17 Instruct those who are rich in the present age…

Such desires do not reflect God’s holy character or His purposes for His children.

Jas 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above…
Mat 7:11 So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts…
Jhn 8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father,…

1Jn 4:5 They are of the world. That is why they speak…
1Jn 5:19 We know that we are of God, and that the whole world…
Jas 3:15 Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly…

The world is passing away,

The present order, marked by sin, rebellion, and human pride, is temporary. God will bring this fallen age to its appointed end and establish His righteous kingdom.

Gal 5:24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh…
Jas 1:14-15 But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires…

but whoever does the will of God

Genuine faith is shown in obedience to God. Those who belong to Christ turn from the world’s rebellion and seek to live according to God’s revealed will.

Mat 7:21 Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter…
Eph 6:6 And do this not only to please them while they are watching,…
Heb 10:36 You need to persevere, so that after you have done…

God grants enduring life to His people. Though the present world fades, those united to Him share in the lasting life of His eternal kingdom.

Jhn 8:35 A slave does not remain in the house forever…
1Pe 1:25 but the word of the Lord stands forever.…
Psa 37:29 The righteous will inherit the land and dwell in it forever.

Beware of Antichrists

Children, it is the last hour;

John addresses his readers with pastoral affection as fellow members of God’s family. The last hour began with Christ’s first coming and continues until His return, marking the final stage of God’s redemptive work in history.

Heb 1:2 But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son…
1Pe 4:7 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear-minded…
2Ti 3:1 But understand this: In the last days…

and just as you have heard that the antichrist is coming,

Believers had been taught that a final opponent of Christ would arise before the end.

1Jn 4:3 and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God…
2Jn 1:7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world,…
2Th 2:3-4 Let no one deceive you in any way, for it will not come…

so now many antichrists have appeared.

False teachers had already entered the church, denying the truth about Jesus Christ and leading others away from apostolic teaching. Their presence revealed the same rebellion against Christ that will culminate in the final antichrist.

Mat 24:11 and many false prophets will arise and deceive many.
Act 20:29-30 I know that after my departure, savage wolves will come…
2Pe 2:1-2 Now there were also false prophets among the people…

This is how we know it is the last hour.

The spread of such deception confirmed that the church was living in the period before Christ’s return and needed to distinguish truth from error.

Mat 24:33-34 So also, when you see all these things, you will know…
1Th 5:1-2 Now about the times and seasons, brothers,…
2Pe 3:3-4 Most importantly, you must understand that in the last days…

They went out from us,

Certain individuals had separated from the churches addressed by John, abandoning fellowship with the apostolic community. Their teaching opposed the truth about Jesus Christ and threatened to mislead believers.

Act 20:30 Even from your own number, men will rise up…
Jhn 6:66 From that time on many of His disciples turned back…
Jud 1:19 These are the ones who cause divisions, who are worldly…

but they did not belong to us.

Their former association with the church did not prove genuine faith. Outward participation can conceal a heart that has never received the apostolic gospel.

Rom 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the flesh,…
Jhn 10:26 But because you are not My sheep, you refuse to believe.
Mat 7:23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you;…

For if they had belonged to us,

Those truly united to Christ are joined to His people and continue in the faith delivered by the apostles.

Heb 3:14 We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly to the end…
Col 1:23 if indeed you continue in your faith, established and firm…
Jhn 8:31 So He said to the Jews who had believed Him,…

they would have remained with us.

Perseverance in fellowship and truth reveals genuine discipleship, not merely temporary attachment to the church.

Jhn 15:4 Remain in Me, and I will remain in you…
Heb 10:23 Let us hold resolutely to the hope we profess…
Rev 2:10 Do not fear what you are about to suffer.…

But their departure made it clear

Their withdrawal exposed the reality that had been hidden while they remained among the believers.

1Co 11:19 And indeed, there must be differences among you…
Mat 7:20 So then, by their fruit you will recognize them.
2Ti 3:9 But they will not advance much further…

that none of them belonged to us.

Their rejection of apostolic truth showed that they were not part of the true spiritual family, despite their earlier presence in the church.

2Ti 2:19 Nevertheless, God’s firm foundation stands…
Tit 1:16 They profess to know God, but by their actions…
Jud 1:4 For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed—…

You, however, have an anointing from the Holy One,

Believers have been set apart and equipped by the Holy Spirit, whom Christ gives to His people. Unlike the false teachers who claimed special insight, John’s readers had received the Spirit’s abiding witness to the apostolic gospel. The Holy One refers to Jesus Christ, whose holiness and authority stand against every false claim about His person and work.

2Co 1:21-22 Now it is God who establishes both us and you in Christ.…
Jhn 14:16-17 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another…
Jhn 15:26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you…

and all of you know the truth.

Through the Spirit’s work, all genuine believers know the essential truth of the gospel: Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, who came in the flesh and gave Himself for sinners. John does not suggest that believers know everything, but that they possess the truth needed to recognize and reject teachings that deny Christ.

Jhn 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth…
Jhn 16:13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes…
1Ti 2:4 who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge…

I have not written to you because you lack knowledge of the truth,

John writes to believers who had received and understood the apostolic message concerning Jesus Christ. They were not ignorant of the Gospel, though false teachers were attempting to draw some away by denying essential truths about Christ and His saving work.

1Ti 2:4 who wants everyone to be saved and to come to the knowledge…
Jhn 8:32 Then you will know the truth, and the truth…
Jhn 17:17 Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.

but because you have it,

Their knowledge was grounded in faith in Christ and the teaching handed down by the apostles. The Holy Spirit enabled them to discern the true message from claims that contradicted what they had received from the beginning.

2Jn 1:2 because of the truth that abides in us…
1Jn 3:19 And by this we will know that we belong to the truth,…
3Jn 1:4 I have no greater joy than to hear that…

and because no lie comes from the truth.

God’s truth does not produce error or compromise with falsehood. Teachings that deny Christ, distort His identity, or depart from the apostolic Gospel cannot be reconciled with the truth believers possess.

Jhn 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry…
Tit 1:2 in the hope of eternal life, which God,…
Heb 6:18 Thus by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible…

Who is the liar, if it is not the one who denies that Jesus is the Christ?

Denial that Jesus is the promised Messiah rejects God’s fulfillment of His redemptive purposes through the Son. Some early false teachers separated Jesus’ humanity from His divine identity or denied that the crucified Jesus was truly the Christ. Such teaching contradicted the apostolic witness that Jesus is the Messiah sent by God.

1Jn 4:2-3 By this you will know the Spirit of God:…
2Jn 1:7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world,…
Jhn 20:31 But these are written so that you may believe…

This is the antichrist, who denies the Father and the Son.

Antichrist describes those who oppose Christ by rejecting the truth revealed about Him. The Father sent the Son, and the Son perfectly reveals the Father; therefore, rejecting the Son also rejects the Father who gave Him. Any teaching that denies the Son’s true identity and saving work stands against the Christian faith.

2Jn 1:9 Anyone who runs ahead without remaining in the teaching…
Jhn 5:23 so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father.…
Jhn 10:30 I and the Father are one.”

Whoever denies the Son

“Whoever denies the Son” refers to anyone who rejects Jesus Christ as the promised Messiah and eternal Son of God. Such denial contradicts the apostolic message and rejects the Father who revealed Himself through the Son.

Mat 10:33 But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny…
Luk 12:9 But whoever denies Me before men will be denied…
2Ti 2:12 if we endure, we will also reign with Him;…

does not have the Father,

No one can claim fellowship with God while refusing the Son whom the Father sent. The Father and the Son are inseparably united in God’s work of salvation.

Jhn 5:23 so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father.…
Jhn 8:19 “You do not know Me or My Father,” Jesus answered.…
Jhn 14:7 If you had known Me, you would know My Father as well…

but whoever confesses the Son

To confess the Son is to openly receive and affirm Jesus Christ for who He is, trusting Him rather than merely offering outward assent. Such confession distinguishes faithful believers from those who abandon the truth under false teaching or persecution.

1Jn 4:15 If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God,…
Rom 10:9 that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”…
Mat 10:32 Therefore everyone who confesses Me before men…

has the Father as well.

Receiving the Son brings the believer into genuine fellowship with the Father. Faith in Christ is not an alternative path to God but the only way God has provided.

2Jn 1:9 Anyone who runs ahead without remaining in the teaching…
Jhn 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.…

Remain in Christ

As for you,

John turns from the deceivers who had departed from the fellowship to those who had received the apostolic message.

2Ti 3:14 But as for you, continue in the things you have learned…
Tit 2:1 But as for you, speak the things that are consistent…
1Ti 6:20 O Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you.…

They were to hold firmly to the gospel first proclaimed to them: that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, who came in the flesh.

The truth was not to be replaced by new claims that denied Christ or altered His identity.

Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you…
Jhn 15:7 If you remain in Me and My words remain in you,…
Jhn 5:38 nor does His word abide in you, because you do not believe…

If it does,

Continued faithfulness to the original gospel distinguishes those who truly belong to God.

Heb 3:14 We have come to share in Christ if we hold firmly to the end…
Col 1:23 if indeed you continue in your faith, established and firm…
1Co 15:2 By this gospel you are saved, if you hold firmly to the word…

you will also remain in the Son and in the Father.

Those who receive the Son as He is revealed also have fellowship with the Father, for the Father and Son cannot be separated.

2Jn 1:9 Anyone who runs ahead without remaining in the teaching…
Jhn 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.…
1Jn 4:15 If anyone confesses that Jesus is the Son of God,…

And this is the promise

God’s saving purpose, revealed through the covenants and fulfilled in Jesus Christ, rests on His own faithfulness. What God has pledged is certain and belongs to those who remain in His Son.

eternal life.

Eternal life is life with God through Jesus Christ, beginning in the present for those who believe and continuing beyond death. It is secured by Christ’s resurrection and will be fully realized when His people are raised and restored in His presence.

1Jn 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come…
Jhn 17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they may know You…
Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…

I have written these things to you

John writes to strengthen believers in the truth they had received from the beginning. As an eyewitness and apostolic leader, he addresses a church troubled by division and false teaching, urging its members to remain in fellowship with Christ and faithful to the Gospel.

2Pe 3:1-2 Beloved, this is now my second letter to you.…
2Pe 1:12 Therefore I will always remind you of these things…
Jud 1:3 Beloved, although I made every effort to write to you…

about those who are trying to deceive you.

Some had rejected the truth about Jesus Christ, denying that the eternal Son truly came in the flesh. Their teaching threatened to draw believers away from the apostolic message and distort the assurance found in Christ. John’s warning calls the church to recognize deception and remain grounded in the truth.

2Jn 1:7 For many deceivers have gone out into the world,…
2Co 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers…
Mat 24:4-5 Jesus answered, “See to it that no one deceives you.…

And as for you, the anointing you received from Him remains in you,

The anointing is the Holy Spirit, given to all who belong to Christ. Unlike the temporary anointing of Old Testament leaders with oil, the Spirit permanently indwells believers and marks them as God’s people.

2Co 1:21-22 Now it is God who establishes both us and you in Christ.…
Jhn 14:16-17 And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another…
Eph 1:13-14 And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth…

and you do not need anyone to teach you.

John does not reject faithful teachers or apostolic instruction. He assures his readers that they are not dependent on false teachers because the Spirit enables them to recognize and reject error.

Jer 31:34 No longer will each man teach his neighbor or his brother…
Jhn 6:45 It is written in the Prophets: ‘And they will all be taught……
Heb 8:11 No longer will each one teach his neighbor or his brother…

But just as His true and genuine anointing teaches you about all things,

The Holy Spirit faithfully confirms the truth God has revealed in Christ and guards believers against the lies of those who deny the Son.

Jhn 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send…
Jhn 16:13 However, when the Spirit of truth comes…
1Co 2:13 And this is what we speak, not in words…

so remain in Him as you have been taught.

Believers are to continue in Christ and in the apostolic message they received, refusing to depart from the truth for deceptive teaching.

Jhn 15:4-7 Remain in Me, and I will remain in you…
Col 2:6-7 Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord,…
Eph 4:20-21 But this is not the way you came to know Christ.…

And now, little children,

John addresses believers with the affection and concern of a spiritual father, urging them toward continued faithfulness and maturity.

Jhn 13:33 Little children, I am with you only a little while longer.…
Gal 4:19 My children, for whom I am again in the pains of childbirth…
1Co 4:14 I am not writing this to shame you, but to warn you…

remain in Christ,

Believers are to continue in trusting obedience and fellowship with Jesus, drawing their life and strength from Him.

Jhn 15:4-5 Remain in Me, and I will remain in you…
Jhn 15:7 If you remain in Me and My words remain in you,…
Col 2:6 Therefore, just as you have received Christ Jesus as Lord,…

so that when He appears,

Christ will visibly return in glory to complete God’s purposes, judge the world, and reward His people.

Tit 2:13 as we await the blessed hope and glorious appearance…
Col 3:4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then……
1Pe 5:4 And when the Chief Shepherd appears, …

we may be confident and unashamed before Him

Those who remain faithful to Christ need not fear His judgment, but may stand before Him with assurance.

1Th 2:19 After all, who is our hope, our joy, our crown of boasting,…
Heb 10:35 So do not throw away your confidence; it holds…

at His coming.

Christ’s return will reveal the reality of every life and bring the final fulfillment of God’s promises.

2Th 2:1 Now concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ…
1Th 4:15 By the word of the Lord, we declare to you…
Jas 5:7-8 Be patient, then, brothers, until the Lord’s coming…

If you know that He is righteous,

God’s righteousness is perfect and unchanging. He always acts in accordance with His holy nature, judges justly, and remains faithful to His promises. Christ reveals this righteousness fully through His sinless life and obedience to the Father.

Psa 11:7 For the LORD is righteous; He loves justice.…
Rev 16:5 And I heard the angel of the waters say:…
Psa 145:17 The LORD is righteous in all His ways…

you also know that everyone who practices righteousness

Righteous conduct gives evidence of a life changed by faith. John does not describe occasional outward acts, but a continuing pattern of obedience that distinguishes believers from the lawless and immoral practices common in the surrounding world.

has been born of Him.

New birth brings a person into God’s family and produces a transformed life. Those born of God receive a new heart and the indwelling work of the Holy Spirit, resulting in a growing conformity to God’s righteous character.
