Various Laws

If you see your brother’s ox or sheep straying,

Oxen and sheep were valuable possessions in Israel’s agricultural society, essential for farming, food, clothing, and sacrifice. “Brother” refers to a fellow Israelite, placing the welfare of one household within the concern of the whole covenant community. A wandering animal was vulnerable to theft, injury, or death.

Mat 18:12-14 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep…

An Israelite was not free to pass by another person’s loss as though it were no concern of his. The command required practical concern rather than indifference, protecting both a neighbor’s livelihood and the order of the community.

The finder was responsible to take reasonable action to restore the animal to its owner. Returning what had wandered away preserved trust among God’s people and recognized that property, though personally owned, was to be treated with justice and care.

Luk 19:8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord,…

Every lost possession was to be treated with care, whether an animal needed for work, a garment needed for protection, or an item of lesser value. Israelite life depended on mutual faithfulness within the covenant community, and returning what belonged to another protected both property and neighborly trust.

Lev 6:2-5 If someone sins and acts unfaithfully against the LORD…
Luk 15:8-10 Or what woman who has ten silver coins…

Finding a lost item created a responsibility to act. Indifference to another person’s loss violated the duty to seek the good of one’s neighbor and upheld neither justice nor peace among God’s people.

A woman must not wear men’s clothing,

Israel’s law preserved the distinction between male and female as part of God’s created order. Dress publicly identified a person’s sex and place within the community, and adopting the clothing of the opposite sex could involve deception, pagan practices, or rejection of that order.

Do not plant your vineyard with two types of seed;

Israel was to keep its agricultural practices distinct, reflecting the order and separation God established in creation and in the covenant life of His people. A vineyard, often associated with Israel’s fruitfulness and blessing, was not to be altered by mixtures God had forbidden.

Do not wear clothes of wool and linen woven together.

Israel’s daily life was to reflect the order and holiness God required of His covenant people. Combining wool and linen in one garment violated a boundary God had established, reinforcing the distinction between what He had set apart and the practices of surrounding nations. Such commands trained Israel to honor God’s authority even in ordinary matters. The restriction also illustrated that devotion to God could not be blended with idolatry or pagan customs. Though Christians are not bound by Israel’s ceremonial regulations, the command continues to affirm God’s call for His people to live faithfully and without compromise.

Marriage Violations

Suppose a man marries a woman,

Marriage in Israel was a binding covenant with legal and family obligations. It established the woman’s place in her husband’s household and protected her rights and reputation.

Gen 2:24 For this reason a man will leave his father and mother…

has relations with her,

The marriage is consummated, confirming the union as a full marital relationship. Sexual intimacy belonged within the covenant of marriage and carried serious responsibilities for both husband and wife.

Gen 4:1 And Adam had relations with his wife Eve, and she conceived…
1Sa 1:19 The next morning they got up early to bow in worship…

and comes to hate her,

A husband’s rejection could endanger his wife’s standing and expose her to public shame. The laws that follow address false accusations and provide a means of protecting an innocent wife from unjust treatment.

Deu 21:15-17 If a man has two wives, one beloved and the other unloved…
Mal 2:16 “For I hate divorce,” says the LORD, the God of Israel.…
Gen 29:31 When the LORD saw that Leah was unloved, He opened her womb;…

and he then accuses her of shameful conduct

Such an accusation concerned alleged sexual sin before marriage and brought the woman’s character and her family’s honor into public question. Israel treated marital faithfulness and sexual purity as matters of covenant obedience and community order.

Lev 19:16 You must not go about spreading slander among your people.…

and gives her a bad name,

A damaged reputation could affect a woman’s standing, her family’s standing, and her future security. The law therefore required the accusation to be examined publicly rather than accepted on the husband’s word alone.

He alleges that she had engaged in sexual relations before marriage. Because the charge carried serious penalties, the following law provided for evidence, testimony, and judgment, protecting both the sanctity of marriage and the innocent from false accusation.

2Sa 13:2 Amnon was sick with frustration over his sister Tamar,…
Lev 21:13-14 The woman he marries must be a virgin.…

Then the young woman’s father and mother

Marriage involved both households, and parents bore responsibility for protecting their daughter’s reputation and defending the honor of their family. Though the father represented the household publicly, the mother’s presence reflects her direct concern in a matter involving her daughter.

The evidence preserved from the marriage was presented to answer a serious accusation that could bring shame, punishment, and lasting harm upon the woman and her family. The law required objective evidence rather than allowing a husband’s charge to stand on his word alone.

The penalty removed open rebellion from the community and upheld the moral standards God had established for Israel.

Deu 13:5 Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death,…
Deu 19:19 you must do to him as he intended to do…
Deu 24:7 If a man is caught kidnapping one of his brothers…

If a man is found lying with another man’s wife,

“If a man is found lying with another man’s wife” refers to adultery, which violated both the marriage covenant and the seventh commandment. In Israel, marriage protected the household, inheritance, and stability of the covenant community. Such a charge required credible evidence rather than mere suspicion.

Lev 18:20 You must not lie carnally with your neighbor’s wife…
Pro 6:29 So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife;…
Exo 20:14 You shall not commit adultery.

both the man who slept with her and the woman must die.

Both willing participants bore guilt, and neither was excused. The penalty showed that adultery was not a private matter but a serious rebellion against God’s order and a threat to family and community life.

Lev 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife…
Ezk 23:45-47 But righteous men will sentence them to the punishment…
Jhn 8:4-5 Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.…

You must purge the evil from Israel.

Public judgment removed open rebellion from the covenant community and upheld Israel’s calling to holiness. Sin affected the nation as a whole, requiring justice that restrained corruption and preserved faithfulness to God.

Deu 13:5 Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death,…
Deu 17:7 The hands of the witnesses shall be the first…
Deu 19:19 you must do to him as he intended to do…

If there is a virgin pledged in marriage to a man,

Betrothal in Israel was a binding covenant, not merely a preliminary engagement. The woman was regarded as belonging to her future husband, and ending the arrangement required divorce. Sexual unfaithfulness during this period was treated as adultery because the marriage commitment had already been established.

Luk 1:27 a virgin pledged in marriage to a man named Joseph,…
Mat 1:18-19 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about:…
2Co 11:2 I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy…

and another man encounters her in the city

A city normally provided nearby witnesses and the possibility of calling for help. Its public, populated setting formed part of the legal circumstances considered in judging the event.

Gen 34:2-5 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince…
Jdg 19:22-25 Bring out the man who came to your house…
Pro 7:8-12 crossing the street near her corner, strolling down the road…

and sleeps with her,

The law addresses a violation of the betrothal covenant and distinguishes between circumstances in which a woman could seek aid and those in which she could not. Sexual union with a betrothed woman threatened her marriage, her household, and the moral order of the community.

Lev 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife…
Pro 6:32-33 He who commits adultery lacks judgment;…
Heb 13:4 Marriage should be honored by all and the marriage bed…

you must take both of them out to the gate of that city

The city gate served as the public place for judicial proceedings, where elders and witnesses could hear the case and uphold the law before the community.

Deu 21:19 his father and mother are to lay hold of him…
Deu 17:5 you must bring out to your gates the man or woman…
1Ki 21:13 And the two scoundrels came in and sat opposite Naboth,…

and stone them to death—

The sentence was carried out publicly, showing that covenant violations affected the whole nation and required decisive judgment.

Lev 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife…
Lev 24:23 Then Moses spoke to the Israelites, and they took…
Deu 13:10 Stone him to death for trying to turn you away…

the young woman because she did not cry out in the city,

Because the encounter occurred where others could have heard her, her failure to seek help was treated under the law as evidence of willing participation.

Jdg 19:25-26 But the men would not listen to him. So the Levite…
Exo 22:23-24 If you do mistreat them, and they cry out to Me in distress…
2Sa 13:12-14 “No, my brother!” she cried. “Do not violate me”…

and the man because he has violated his neighbor’s wife.

The man was guilty of adultery with a betrothed woman, whose covenant commitment was regarded as binding.

2Sa 11:4-5 Then David sent messengers to get her, and when she came…
Exo 20:14 You shall not commit adultery.
Pro 6:29-32 So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife;…

So you must purge the evil from among you.

Israel was commanded to remove open rebellion from its midst in order to preserve justice, holiness, and faithfulness to God’s covenant.

Deu 13:5 Such a prophet or dreamer must be put to death,…
Deu 17:7 The hands of the witnesses shall be the first…
Deu 19:19 you must do to him as he intended to do…

But if the man encounters a betrothed woman in the open country,

The open country indicates isolation, where no one would be likely to hear or come to her aid. Betrothal was a binding covenant that carried the legal seriousness of marriage.

Luk 1:27 a virgin pledged in marriage to a man named Joseph,…
Mat 1:18-19 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about:…
2Co 11:2 I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy…

and he overpowers her and lies with her,

The woman is identified as the victim of violence, not as a willing participant. Because he overpowers her and she cannot resist or summon help, the text assigns her no guilt.

2Sa 13:14 But Amnon refused to listen to her, and being stronger…
Gen 34:2 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince…
Jdg 19:25 But the men would not listen to him. So the Levite…

only the man who has done this must die.

The offender alone bears responsibility for his crime. The penalty reflects the seriousness of sexual violence and the violation of a marriage covenant, while the law protects the innocent from unjust punishment.

Lev 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife…
Deu 24:16 Fathers shall not be put to death for their children,…
Ezk 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die.…

Do nothing to the young woman,

She is to be protected from punishment as the innocent victim of violence.

Exo 23:7 Stay far away from a false accusation. Do not kill…
Psa 94:21 They band together against the righteous…
Isa 5:23 who acquit the guilty for a bribe and deprive the innocent……

because she has committed no sin worthy of death.

Guilt belongs to the man who forced her, not to the woman who could not prevent the assault.

Luk 23:15 Neither has Herod, for he sent Him back to us.…
Deu 24:16 Fathers shall not be put to death for their children,…
Ezk 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die.…

This case is just like one

The law establishes her innocence by comparing her situation to a clear act of violent crime.

Deu 19:19 you must do to him as he intended to do…
Num 35:30-31 If anyone kills a person, the murderer is to be put to death…
Num 35:33 Do not pollute the land where you live, …

in which a man attacks his neighbor and murders him.

As a murder victim bears no blame for the attack, the woman bears no blame for the crime committed against her.

Deu 19:11-13 If, however, a man hates his neighbor and lies…
Exo 21:12-14 Whoever strikes and kills a man must surely be put to death.…
Lev 24:17 And if a man takes the life of anyone else,…

When he found her in the field,

The phrase “when he found her in the field” emphasizes that she was away from the protection and potential witnesses of the town. In an isolated field, her cries might not be heard, and no immediate help could be expected.

Deu 21:1-3 If one is found slain, lying in a field…
2Sa 13:14 But Amnon refused to listen to her, and being stronger…
Gen 34:2 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince…

the betrothed woman cried out,

“The betrothed woman cried out” indicates that she resisted the assault and sought help. Because betrothal was binding, she was regarded as the man’s wife and entitled to corresponding legal and moral protection.

Psa 34:17 The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears;…
Psa 107:13 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble,…
Jon 2:2 “In my distress I called to the LORD, and He answered me.”…

but there was no one to save her.

Her isolation explains why no one came to her aid and establishes that she bore no guilt for what was done to her.

Psa 18:41 They cried for help, but there was no one to save them—…
Psa 72:12-14 For he will deliver the needy who cry out…
Isa 63:5 I looked, but there was no one to help;…

If a man encounters a virgin who is not pledged in marriage,

The woman is unmarried and not under a binding betrothal, so her family retained responsibility for arranging her future marriage and protecting her interests.

Exo 22:16-17 If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged in marriage…
Gen 24:16 Now the girl was very beautiful, a virgin…

and he seizes her and lies with her,

The man has taken sexual relations outside the order God established for marriage. His action placed the woman’s reputation, prospects, and family standing at risk.

2Sa 13:14 But Amnon refused to listen to her, and being stronger…
Gen 34:2-3 When Shechem son of Hamor the Hivite, the prince…

and they are discovered,

The matter was brought into public view and required legal judgment. The following provisions held the man responsible for the consequences of his conduct and provided for the woman’s future security.

Luk 8:17 For there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed…

then the man who lay with her

The man had sexual relations with an unmarried virgin who was not already pledged to another. His action brought lasting consequences for both families.

The required payment was a substantial bride price, acknowledging the injury done to the woman’s household and the loss of her expected marital provision.

Gen 34:12 Demand a high dowry and an expensive gift,…
1Sa 18:25-27 Saul replied, “Say to David, ‘The king desires…”…

Jdg 20:5 And during the night, the men of Gibeah rose up against me…

A man is not to marry his father’s wife,

Israel’s law guarded the order and holiness of the household. A father’s wife, including a stepmother, remained under the father’s marital protection, and taking her would violate both family boundaries and the father’s honor.

Lev 18:8 You must not have sexual relations with your father’s wife;…
Lev 20:11 If a man lies with his father’s wife,…
Deu 27:20 Cursed is he who sleeps with his father’s wife……

so that he will not dishonor his father’s marriage bed.

Marriage established an exclusive covenant that was to be respected by every member of the family. Such conduct brought shame upon the father and disrupted the household, inheritance, and lineage God had ordered for Israel.
