Genesis 38

Judah and Tamar

About that time,

The narrative turns from Joseph’s descent into Egypt to Judah’s life in Canaan, revealing events within Jacob’s family during the same period.

Gen 37:36 Meanwhile, the Midianites sold Joseph in Egypt to Potiphar…
Gen 39:1 Meanwhile, Joseph had been taken down to Egypt,…
Gen 37:28 So when the Midianite traders passed by, his brothers…

Judah left his brothers

Judah separated himself from the family camp and entered a setting that would shape his household, choices, and future standing among his brothers.

and settled near a man named Hirah,

Hirah became Judah’s Canaanite companion and remained involved in the events that followed.

an Adullamite.

Judah lived near Adullam in the foothills of Canaan, among a population outside his family’s covenant line.

1Ch 11:15 Three of the thirty chief men went down to David…

There Judah saw the daughter of a Canaanite man named Shua,

Judah settled apart from his brothers and formed ties among the Canaanites. His marriage into a Canaanite household marked a departure from the family’s earlier concern to preserve its distinct identity and worship. Shua’s daughter became the mother of Judah’s sons and part of the troubled events that followed in his household.

and he took her as a wife

Judah established his own family through this marriage, likely within the social and economic setting of the region where he lived. The union joined his household to a Canaanite family and introduced circumstances that would shape the lives of Er, Onan, Shelah, and Tamar.

and slept with her.

Their marriage was consummated, beginning Judah’s line through this woman. Though Judah’s household soon became marked by sin, loss, and failure, God would preserve Judah’s family and carry forward His purposes through it.

Gen 30:4 So Rachel gave Jacob her servant Bilhah as a wife…
2Sa 11:4 Then David sent messengers to get her, and when she came…

So she conceived and gave birth to a son,

Judah’s Canaanite wife bore his first son, establishing the next generation of Judah’s household. The birth continued the family line through which God would preserve the tribe of Judah and fulfill His promises concerning Jacob’s descendants.

and Judah named him Er.

As the firstborn, Er, whose name is of uncertain meaning, held the customary position of family inheritance and leadership. Judah’s naming of him publicly acknowledged him as his son and heir. Though Er’s life would later end under God’s judgment, Judah’s line would continue through another son, leading ultimately to David and the Messiah.

Luk 1:13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah,…

Again she conceived and gave birth to a son,

Judah’s Canaanite wife bore him a second son, further establishing his household and lineage. The growing family sets the stage for the events that follow concerning Judah’s sons and their responsibility to preserve the family line.

Rut 4:13 So Boaz took Ruth, and she became his wife.…

and she named him Onan.

Onan later becomes responsible for providing an heir for his deceased brother through levirate marriage. His refusal to fulfill that duty brings judgment and deepens the crisis within Judah’s family.

Gen 29:32 And Leah conceived and gave birth to a son,…
Gen 30:24 She named him Joseph, and said, “May the LORD…

Then she gave birth to another son

Judah’s wife, the daughter of Shua, bore a third son, further establishing Judah’s household in Canaan. Sons were central to the continuation of a family’s name, inheritance, and place within the covenant people.

Shelah, whose name may mean “petition” or “request,” became the ancestor of a clan within Judah. His birth completed the three sons born to Judah by the daughter of Shua: Er, Onan, and Shelah.

Now Judah acquired a wife for Er, his firstborn,

Judah arranged Er’s marriage as head of the household, following the common family practice of securing marriages that would preserve the family line and inheritance. As the firstborn, Er held a prominent place within Judah’s household.

and her name was Tamar.

Tamar, whose name means “palm tree,” entered Judah’s family as Er’s wife and later became central to its survival after the deaths of Er and Onan. Her determination to obtain offspring within Judah’s line preserved the family inheritance. Through Perez, Tamar became an ancestor of David and of Jesus Christ.

Mat 1:3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar…

But Er, Judah’s firstborn,

Er was Judah’s eldest son, born after Judah separated from his brothers and formed a household among the Canaanites. As firstborn, he stood at the head of Judah’s sons and was married to Tamar, but his place in the family would soon be removed.

God directly judged Er for his sin. His death altered the course of Judah’s household and set in motion the events involving Tamar, Onan, and the preservation of Judah’s family line.

This obligation preserved the deceased man’s name, inheritance, and family line.

But Onan knew that the offspring would not belong to him;

A son born through Tamar would carry Er’s name and preserve his inheritance rather than establish Onan’s own line. In the family-centered society of the patriarchs, preserving a dead brother’s name, property, and place within the clan was a serious obligation.

Onan chose personal advantage over his duty to his deceased brother and to Tamar. His refusal threatened the continuation of Er’s household and showed contempt for the family responsibility entrusted to him.

Deu 25:8 Then the elders of his city shall summon him.…
Deu 25:9-10 his brother’s widow shall go up to him in the presence…

What he did was wicked in the sight of the LORD,

Onan deliberately refused the duty Judah had given him to raise up an heir for his deceased brother through Tamar. By withholding offspring while taking the privileges of the marriage, he acted selfishly against Tamar, his brother’s memory, and the family line God had promised to preserve.

1Ki 15:26 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD…
2Ki 21:2 And he did evil in the sight of the LORD…

so He put Onan to death as well.

Like Er before him, Onan came under God’s direct judgment for persistent wickedness. His death shows that God saw his actions not as a private matter but as willful rebellion against the responsibilities He had established for the household.

because she had covered her face.

Tamar concealed her identity to carry out her plan. The hidden face creates the central tension of the account: Judah judges Tamar later without realizing his own involvement, until the evidence forces him to acknowledge her righteousness and his failure.

Not realizing that she was his daughter-in-law,

Pro 7:10 Then a woman came out to meet him, with the attire…
Pro 7:13 She seizes him and kisses him; she brazenly says to him:

“Come now, let me sleep with you.”

Judah willingly pursued sexual sin while traveling to Timnah. The encounter reveals the moral decline that followed his separation from his brothers and his failure to provide Tamar with Shelah as promised.

2Sa 13:11 And when she had brought them to him to eat, he took hold…
Gen 19:5 They called out to Lot, saying, “Where are the men…
Jdg 19:22 Bring out the man who came to your house…

“What will you give me for sleeping with you?” she inquired.

Tamar required payment before agreeing, leading Judah to leave personal items as a pledge. Those items would later prove his guilt and compel him to acknowledge that Tamar had acted more righteously than he had.

Gen 30:16 When Jacob came in from the field that evening…
Ezk 16:33 Men give gifts to all their prostitutes,…
Deu 23:18 You must not bring the wages of a prostitute…

“I will send you a young goat from my flock,” Judah answered.

A young goat was a suitable payment in a pastoral society, where livestock served as a common measure of wealth and exchange. Judah intended to compensate the woman he believed was a prostitute, yet his actions continued the pattern of moral failure that had marked his family. His offer also shows that he expected to return home before sending the payment.

Gen 27:9 Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,…
Luk 15:29 But he answered his father, ‘Look, all these years…

But she replied, “Only if you leave me something as a pledge until you send it.”

Tamar required security before agreeing, knowing that Judah might not fulfill his promise. The pledge would identify him and provide evidence of the encounter if necessary. Her demand set in motion the circumstances by which Judah’s responsibility toward Tamar and his family would later be exposed.

Pro 27:13 Take the garment of him who posts security for a stranger;…
Deu 24:10-13 When you lend anything to your neighbor,…

“What pledge should I give you?” he asked.

Judah sought a guarantee for the promised young goat, following a recognized custom in which a personal possession secured a later payment. His request treated the encounter as a private transaction, though he did not know Tamar’s identity or the consequences that would follow.

Exo 22:26 If you take your neighbor’s cloak as collateral,…
Deu 24:10-13 When you lend anything to your neighbor,…

She answered, “Your seal and your cord, and the staff in your hand.”

Tamar asked for objects that could unmistakably identify Judah. His seal, carried by its cord, functioned as his personal mark of authority, while his staff was a recognizable possession. By receiving them, she obtained evidence that could later establish his responsibility.

Jos 2:18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied…
1Sa 17:40 And David took his staff in his hand,…

So he gave them to her and slept with her, and she became pregnant by him.

Judah surrendered the pledge without recognizing Tamar, his daughter-in-law, whom he had wrongfully withheld from Shelah. Their union produced Perez and Zerah, preserving the line of Judah. When Tamar later presented the pledge, Judah would be forced to acknowledge both his actions and her righteousness in seeking the offspring denied to her.

and put on her widow’s garments again.

Tamar returned to the clothing that marked her as the widow of Er and Onan. Though Judah had left her without the marriage and offspring customarily expected for a childless widow, she remained within his household line. Her return anticipates Judah’s later acknowledgment that she was more righteous than he.

Hirah identified her as a shrine prostitute, apparently assuming she was connected with local Canaanite religious practice. Judah had met Tamar there at Enaim (“eyes” or “springs”) while she was veiled and believed her to be such a woman.

Deu 23:17-18 No daughter or son of Israel is to be a shrine prostitute.…
Pro 7:10-12 Then a woman came out to meet him, with the attire…
Hos 4:14 I will not punish your daughters when they prostitute…

“No shrine prostitute has been here,” they answered.

The men of Enaim knew of no shrine prostitute at that location. Tamar had returned to her home after receiving Judah’s pledge, leaving Hirah unable to complete the payment or recover Judah’s signet, cord, and staff.

2Ki 23:7 He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes…
1Ki 15:12 He banished the male shrine prostitutes from the land…
1Ki 14:24 There were even male shrine prostitutes in the land.…

So Hirah returned to Judah and said,

Judah’s friend had gone to deliver the promised payment and retrieve Judah’s pledge, but Tamar had already left the area. Her disappearance prevented Judah from recovering the items that identified him.

Num 13:26 and they went back to Moses, Aaron, and the congregation…
Gen 32:6 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said,…

“I could not find her,

Tamar had concealed her identity and returned to her father’s house after carrying out her plan. Hirah’s unsuccessful search left Judah unable to settle the matter privately.

Gen 31:35 Rachel said to her father, “Sir, do not be angry…
Pro 1:28 Then they will call on me, but I will not answer;…
Jhn 7:34 You will look for Me, but you will not find Me;…

and furthermore, the men of that place said,

The local residents knew of no woman stationed along the road, confirming that Tamar had not been known as a prostitute in the community.

Deu 19:15 A lone witness is not sufficient to establish any wrongdoing…
Jhn 8:17 Even in your own Law it is written that the testimony…

‘No shrine prostitute has been here.’”

Tamar had not participated in pagan worship or prostitution. She had acted to obtain the offspring Judah had withheld from her, and the missing pledge would later expose Judah’s responsibility.

Deu 23:17-18 No daughter or son of Israel is to be a shrine prostitute.…
1Ki 14:24 There were even male shrine prostitutes in the land.…
2Ki 23:7 He also tore down the quarters of the male shrine prostitutes…

“Let her keep the items,”

Judah chose to abandon his pledge rather than risk wider exposure. His seal, cord, and staff were personal possessions that identified him and represented his standing as head of his household.

Exo 22:26-27 If you take your neighbor’s cloak as collateral,…
Deu 24:10-13 When you lend anything to your neighbor,…
Pro 22:26-27 Do not be one who gives pledges, who puts up…

Judah replied.

Judah sought to contain the matter through his friend and avoid attention. Though he had acted irresponsibly, he still recognized the danger of his identifying items remaining in another person’s possession.

Gen 44:16 “What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied.…
Gen 44:33-34 Now please let your servant stay here as my lord’s slave…

“Otherwise we will become a laughingstock.

Public disgrace carried serious weight in a society shaped by honor and reputation. Judah was more concerned with avoiding shame than with discovering why the woman could not be found.

Psa 44:13-14 You have made us a reproach to our neighbors…
Jer 20:7 You have deceived me, O LORD, and I was deceived.…
Job 12:4 I am a laughingstock to my friends, though I called on God……

After all, I did send her this young goat,

Judah had provided the payment he promised, and his friend had made a reasonable effort to deliver it. The goat was a customary form of payment, while the pledged items remained evidence of Judah’s involvement.

1Sa 16:20 And Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a skin of wine…
Jdg 15:1 Later on, at the time of the wheat harvest,…
Gen 27:9 Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,…

but you could not find her.”

Tamar’s disappearance preserved her plan until the proper time. Judah believed the matter was finished, unaware that the items he left behind would soon expose his actions and establish Tamar’s innocence.

Sng 5:6 I opened for my beloved, but he had turned and gone.…
Sng 3:1-2 On my bed at night I sought the one I love; I…
2Ki 2:17 But when they pressed him to the point of embarrassment…

About three months later,

Tamar’s pregnancy had become evident. Having been denied marriage to Shelah, she had acted to obtain the offspring Judah had withheld from her.

Luk 1:56 Mary stayed with Elizabeth for about three months…
Luk 1:24-25 After these days, his wife Elizabeth became pregnant…
Gen 21:2 So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age…

Judah was told,

News of Tamar’s condition reached Judah, who remained responsible for her as his daughter-in-law.

2Sa 13:21 When King David heard all this, he was furious.
1Ki 21:13 And the two scoundrels came in and sat opposite Naboth,…
Est 2:22 When Mordecai learned of the plot, he reported it……

“Your daughter-in-law Tamar has prostituted herself,

Those reporting the matter assumed she had acted immorally, since she was a widow awaiting Judah’s decision concerning Shelah.

Deu 22:21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house,…
Lev 19:29 You must not defile your daughter by making her…
Hos 4:14 I will not punish your daughters when they prostitute…

and now she is pregnant.”

Her pregnancy appeared to confirm the charge, though Judah did not yet know that he himself was the father.

Mat 1:3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar…
Mat 1:18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about:…
Gen 16:4 And he slept with Hagar, and she conceived.…

“Bring her out!” Judah replied.

Judah immediately assumed the role of judge over Tamar.

Jhn 8:3-5 The scribes and Pharisees, however, brought to Him…
Lev 24:14 Take the blasphemer outside the camp…
Num 15:35-36 And the LORD said to Moses, “The man must surely be put…

“Let her be burned to death!”

His severe sentence exposed his own double standard. He condemned Tamar without investigating the matter or recognizing his failure to fulfill his obligation to her.

Lev 21:9 If a priest’s daughter defiles herself by prostituting…
Lev 20:14 If a man marries both a woman and her mother,…
Rev 17:16 And the ten horns and the beast that you saw will hate…

As she was being brought out,

Tamar was being led out under Judah’s order to be burned because her pregnancy appeared to prove sexual immorality. Though widowed, she had been promised to Judah’s son Shelah, whom Judah had withheld from her.

Deu 22:21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house,…
Jhn 8:3 The scribes and Pharisees, however, brought to Him…

Tamar sent a message to her father-in-law:

Rather than publicly accuse Judah at once, Tamar sent evidence that required him to judge the matter truthfully.

Num 10:29 Then Moses said to Hobab, the son of Moses’ father-in-law…
Exo 4:18 Then Moses went back to his father-in-law Jethro…

“I am pregnant by the man to whom these items belong.”

Her message exposed the man responsible without initially naming him. The pledge Judah had left with her established his identity beyond dispute.

2Sa 11:5 And the woman conceived and sent word to David,…
Mat 1:18 This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about:…

And she added, “Please examine them.

Tamar called on Judah to recognize what belonged to him and to acknowledge his part in her pregnancy. Her request that he examine the items was a call for justice and truth. The Hebrew word for “examine” can also mean “recognize” or “acknowledge,” suggesting a deeper call for Judah to recognize his responsibility.

Deu 13:14 then you must inquire, investigate,…
Gen 42:16 Send one of your number to get your brother;…

Whose seal and cord and staff are these?”

Judah’s seal, cord, and staff were personal possessions that identified him as surely as a signature. Faced with the evidence, Judah would have to admit that Tamar had acted because he failed to give her Shelah as promised.

Est 3:10 So the king removed the signet ring from his finger…
Jos 2:18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied…
Num 17:2-3 Speak to the Israelites and take from them twelve staffs,…

Judah recognized the items and said,

The seal, cord, and staff identified Judah as the man responsible for Tamar’s pregnancy. Confronted with his own possessions, he could no longer conceal that he had withheld Tamar from Shelah and had unknowingly sought her himself.

Jos 7:19-21 So Joshua said to Achan, “My son, give glory to the LORD,…
2Sa 12:13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned…”…
Pro 28:13 He who conceals his sins will not prosper,…

“She is more righteous than I,

Tamar had acted to secure the offspring and family standing that Judah had denied her. Judah did not excuse her deception, but he acknowledged that his failure to fulfill his responsibility toward her was the greater wrong.

1Sa 24:17 and said to David, “You are more righteous than I,…
Exo 9:27 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron…
Gen 44:16 “What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied.…

since I did not give her to my son Shelah.”

Though Shelah had grown old enough to marry, Judah had kept Tamar in her father’s house because he feared losing another son. His admission exposed his neglect of the family duty owed to Tamar and to the line of his deceased sons.

Deu 25:5-6 When brothers dwell together and one of them dies…
Mat 22:24-28 “Teacher,” they said, “Moses declared that if a man dies……
Rut 4:5 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the land……

And he did not have relations with her again.

Judah did not continue the relationship after learning Tamar’s identity. Her sons, Perez and Zerah, remained within Judah’s family line, and Perez became an ancestor of David and of Christ.

Heb 13:4 Marriage should be honored by all and the marriage bed…
1Co 6:18 Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin…
1Th 4:3-5 For it is God’s will that you should be holy:…

The Birth of Perez and Zerah

When the time came for Tamar to give birth,

Tamar’s pregnancy brought Judah’s family crisis to its appointed resolution. Widowed by Er and denied the promised protection of levirate marriage after Onan’s death, Tamar had acted to preserve a place in Judah’s household and secure offspring for the family line. Her delivery confirmed that Judah’s line would continue despite his failure to provide Shelah.

Luk 2:6 While they were there, the time came for her Child…
Luk 1:57 When the time came for Elizabeth to have her child,…
Gen 21:2 So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age…

there were twins in her womb.

The twin sons, Perez and Zerah, continued a biblical pattern in which the order of birth carries lasting significance. Perez would become the leading branch of Judah’s family and an ancestor of David and the Messiah. The unexpected circumstances surrounding their birth show that God preserved His covenant purposes through Judah’s household despite human sin and disorder.

Gen 25:24 When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins…
Gen 25:23 And He declared to her: “Two nations are in your womb,…
Rom 9:10-12 Not only that, but Rebecca’s children were conceived…

And as she was giving birth,

Tamar was delivering the twin sons conceived through Judah. Their birth brought Judah’s family line forward after the deaths of his older sons and revealed God’s continuing purpose through a troubled household.

1Sa 4:19 Now Eli’s daughter-in-law, the wife of Phinehas…
Luk 1:57 When the time came for Elizabeth to have her child,…
Gen 35:16-17 Later, they set out from Bethel, and while they were still…

one of them put out his hand;

One child briefly appeared first, prompting the midwife to identify him as the apparent firstborn. The moment reflected the importance placed on birth order and inheritance within the family.

Gen 25:26 After this, his brother came out grasping Esau’s heel;…
Gen 25:22 But the children inside her struggled with each other,…
Hos 12:3 In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel…

so the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it around his wrist.

The thread marked the child who had first extended his hand so that his identity and claim to precedence would be remembered. Before he could be fully delivered, however, he withdrew his hand.

Jos 2:18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied…
Jos 2:21 “Let it be as you say,” she replied, and she sent them away.…
Heb 11:31 By faith the prostitute Rahab, because she welcomed…

“This one came out first,” she announced.

The midwife recognized the marked child as the one who had first appeared, though his brother Perez would be born ahead of him.

Gen 25:25 The first one came out red, covered with hair…
Exo 13:2 “Consecrate to Me every firstborn male. The firstborn”…
1Ch 5:1 These were the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel.…

But when he pulled his hand back

Zerah’s hand had appeared first and was marked with a scarlet thread, seemingly identifying him as the firstborn. His withdrawal reversed what the midwife expected.

Gen 25:24-26 When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins…
Hos 12:3-4 In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel…

and his brother came out,

Perez was born before Zerah, taking the position normally associated with the firstborn. The unexpected birth order became significant in Judah’s family line.

Rom 9:10-13 Not only that, but Rebecca’s children were conceived…
Mal 1:2-3 “I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you ask……

she said, “You have broken out first!”

The midwife recognized that Perez (“breaking out”) had forced his way ahead of his brother. His birth reflected the surprising circumstances surrounding Tamar and Judah’s sons.

2Sa 5:20 So David went to Baal-perazim, where he defeated…
1Ch 14:11 So David and his men went up to Baal-perazim,…
Mic 2:13 One who breaks open the way will go up before them;…

So he was named Perez.

Perez means “breach” or “breaking out.” He became the ancestor of the royal line of David and, ultimately, of Jesus Christ.

Rut 4:18-22 Now these are the generations of Perez: Perez was the father…
1Ch 2:4-5 Tamar, Judah’s daughter-in-law, bore to him Perez and Zerah.…
Mat 1:3 Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar…

Then his brother came out

Zerah was born after Perez, though his hand had appeared first. Their birth closes the account of Judah and Tamar and establishes the family line through which Perez would carry forward Judah’s inheritance.

Gen 25:24-26 When her time came to give birth, there were indeed twins…
Rom 9:10-12 Not only that, but Rebecca’s children were conceived…
Hos 12:3 In the womb he grasped his brother’s heel…

with the scarlet thread around his wrist,

The thread remained as the sign the midwife had placed on Zerah when he first extended his hand. Though marked as the one who seemed likely to be born first, Zerah did not receive the firstborn position.

Sng 4:3 Your lips are like a scarlet ribbon, and your mouth…
Lev 14:4-6 the priest shall order that two live clean birds,…

and he was named Zerah.

Zerah, whose name means “brightness” or “dawning,” became an ancestor within the tribe of Judah, while Perez received prominence in Judah’s line and later in the genealogy of David and the Messiah.
