Genesis 44
Berean Study Bible

Benjamin and the Silver Cup

Then Joseph instructed his steward:

Joseph used his trusted household servant to carry out the next stage of his test. As governor of Egypt, he had full authority over his estate and relied on faithful servants to administer his affairs.

Gen 43:16 When Joseph saw Benjamin with his brothers,…
Gen 24:2-3 So Abraham instructed the chief servant of his household…
Gen 15:2 But Abram replied, “O Lord GOD, what can You give me?…

“Fill the men’s sacks with as much food as they can carry,

Joseph again provided generously for his brothers during the famine. Though they had wronged him deeply, he ensured that their households would have food.

Gen 42:25 Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain,…
Gen 45:23 And he sent to his father the following: ten donkeys…
Gen 47:12 Joseph also provided his father and brothers…

and put each one’s silver in the mouth of his sack.

Returning their payment increased the pressure of the coming test and exposed whether the brothers would act with honesty and loyalty. Joseph was preparing to learn whether they would protect Benjamin rather than abandon him as they had once abandoned Joseph.

Gen 43:21 But when we came to the place we lodged for the night,…
Gen 43:12 Take double the silver with you so that you may return…
Gen 42:27 At the place where they lodged for the night, …

Put my cup, the silver one,

Joseph’s silver cup marked his high rank in Egypt and was associated with his claim to discern hidden matters.

Gen 40:11-13 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes,…
Jer 25:15 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me:…
Isa 51:17 Awake, awake! Rise up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk…

in the mouth of the youngest one’s sack,

By placing it in Benjamin’s sack, Joseph tested whether his brothers would again sacrifice Jacob’s favored son or stand together to protect him.

Gen 43:29-30 When Joseph looked up and saw his brother Benjamin,…

along with the silver for his grain.”

The returned payment heightened the apparent offense and ensured that Benjamin would seem guilty of both theft and dishonesty.

Gen 42:25-28 Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain,…
Gen 43:12-15 Take double the silver with you so that you may return…
Gen 43:21-23 But when we came to the place we lodged for the night,…

So the steward did as Joseph had instructed.

Joseph’s command set the final test in motion, exposing the brothers’ changed hearts and preparing the way for reconciliation.

Gen 43:16-17 When Joseph saw Benjamin with his brothers,…
Gen 41:55 When extreme hunger came to all the land of Egypt…
Gen 24:49-51 Now if you will show kindness and faithfulness to my master,…

At daybreak,

Joseph acted promptly, setting the next stage of his test in motion after his brothers had been received and fed in Egypt.

Jos 6:15 Then on the seventh day, they got up at dawn…
Gen 19:27 Early the next morning, Abraham got up and returned…
Exo 34:4 So Moses chiseled out two stone tablets like the originals.…

the men were sent on their way

The brothers departed believing their journey had ended peacefully and that Benjamin was safe. Joseph’s actions would soon expose whether they would protect Benjamin or abandon him as they had once abandoned Joseph.

Gen 26:31 And they got up early the next morning and swore an oath…
Gen 45:24 Then Joseph sent his brothers on their way…
Gen 24:59 So they sent their sister Rebekah on her way,…

with their donkeys.

Their loaded animals carried the grain needed for Jacob’s household, while Joseph’s hidden cup would bring them back to face the consequences of their former sin.

Gen 42:26 and they loaded the grain on their donkeys and departed.
Gen 45:23 And he sent to his father the following: ten donkeys…
1Sa 25:18 Then Abigail hurried and took two hundred loaves of bread…

They had not gone far from the city

The brothers were still close enough to Joseph’s residence for an immediate pursuit, leaving them little opportunity to respond or escape suspicion.

2Sa 15:17 So the king set out with all the people following him.…
Jos 2:7 So the king’s men set out in pursuit of the spies…

when Joseph told his steward,

Joseph entrusted the matter to the chief servant responsible for carrying out his household orders.

Gen 39:4 Joseph found favor in his sight and became his attendant.…
Luk 12:42 And the Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise……

“Pursue the men at once,

The steward was to catch them quickly and confront them before they traveled farther from Egypt.

Exo 14:9 The Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots…

and when you overtake them,

Joseph’s plan ensured that the brothers would be brought back to face him once more.

Gen 31:25 Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead…
Deu 28:45 All these curses will come upon you. They will pursue you…

ask, ‘Why have you repaid good with evil?

The charge forced the brothers to answer for an apparent betrayal of the man who had shown them generosity, while preparing the way for Joseph to test their character and their concern for Benjamin.

Jer 18:20 Should good be repaid with evil? Yet they have dug a pit…
1Sa 24:17 and said to David, “You are more righteous than I,…
Psa 35:12 They repay me evil for good, to the bereavement of my soul.

Is this not the cup my master drinks from

Joseph’s cup was a valuable possession associated with his position as Egypt’s chief administrator. Its disappearance would be treated as an offense against Joseph’s household and authority.

Gen 40:11 Pharaoh’s cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes,…
Gen 40:13 Within three days Pharaoh will lift up your head…
Gen 40:21 Pharaoh restored the chief cupbearer to his position…

and uses for divination?

The steward’s words support Joseph’s Egyptian public identity and intensify the charge. Joseph had received wisdom from God, not from occult practices, but the cup was presented as an instrument through which a ruler of Joseph’s stature could discern hidden matters.

Gen 30:27 But Laban replied, “If I have found favor in your eyes…
Ezk 21:21 For the king of Babylon stands at the fork in the road,…
Deu 18:10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son…

What you have done is wicked!’”

The accusation was designed to bring the brothers to account, especially concerning Benjamin. Though Joseph had arranged for the cup to be placed in Benjamin’s sack, the crisis exposed the brothers’ changed hearts as they faced the possibility of losing Rachel’s other son.

Gen 39:9 No one in this house is greater than I am.…
Gen 42:21 Then they said to one another, “Surely we are being punished…
Jos 7:11 Israel has sinned; they have transgressed My covenant…

When the steward overtook them,

Joseph’s trusted servant carried out his master’s instructions without delay, intercepting the brothers before they could return to Canaan. The encounter intensified Joseph’s test, bringing their character and loyalty to Benjamin into open view.

Gen 31:25 Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the hill country of Gilead…
Exo 14:9 The Egyptians—all Pharaoh’s horses and chariots…
1Sa 30:8 David inquired of the LORD: “Should I pursue these raiders?”…

he relayed these words to them.

The accusation forced the brothers to respond together under pressure. Their reaction would reveal whether they had changed since selling Joseph years earlier and whether they would protect Benjamin rather than abandon him.

Exo 19:7 So Moses went back and summoned the elders of the people…
1Sa 3:18 So Samuel told him everything and did not hide…
Gen 24:37 My master made me swear an oath and said,…

“Why does my lord say these things?” they asked.

Joseph’s brothers responded with alarm to the steward’s accusation of stealing the silver cup. They addressed him with the respect due to an official of Joseph’s household, unaware that Joseph himself had arranged the test.

Gen 31:36-37 Then Jacob became incensed and challenged Laban.…
1Sa 24:9 Why do you listen to the words of men who say…
Job 13:23-24 How many are my iniquities and sins? Reveal to me…

“Your servants could not possibly do such a thing.

They firmly denied the charge, appealing to their conduct in returning the money found in their sacks on the earlier journey. Their response shows that they were no longer acting with the deceit that had marked their treatment of Joseph years before.

Gen 18:25 Far be it from You to do such a thing—to kill the righteous…
1Sa 24:6 So he said to his men, “The LORD forbid…
Gen 39:9 No one in this house is greater than I am.…

We even brought back to you from the land of Canaan

The brothers point to their earlier honesty: although the silver had appeared in their sacks without their knowledge, they returned it when they came back to Egypt. Their journey from Canaan, the home of Jacob’s family, makes their return of the money a deliberate act rather than an attempt to avoid responsibility.

Gen 43:12 Take double the silver with you so that you may return…
Gen 43:22 We have brought additional silver with us to buy food.…

the silver we found in the mouths of our sacks.

The unexplained silver had troubled them from the beginning. Returning it showed that they did not intend to keep what belonged to Egypt and gave weight to their denial of theft.

Gen 42:27 At the place where they lodged for the night, …
Gen 43:21 But when we came to the place we lodged for the night,…

Why would we steal silver or gold from your master’s house?

Since they had voluntarily returned silver found in their possession, they argue that stealing from Joseph’s house would make no sense. They remain unaware that Joseph has arranged the test, which will reveal their changed character and their willingness to stand together for Benjamin.

Act 20:33 I have not coveted anyone’s silver or gold or clothing.
1Sa 12:3 Here I am. Bear witness against me before the LORD…
1Sa 12:4 “You have not cheated us or oppressed us,” they replied,…

If any of your servants is found to have it,

Joseph’s silver cup had been hidden in Benjamin’s sack at Joseph’s command. The brothers, unaware of this, confidently deny any theft and submit themselves to a search.

Gen 31:32 If you find your gods with anyone here, he shall not live!…
Exo 22:3 But if it happens after sunrise, there is guilt…
Deu 24:7 If a man is caught kidnapping one of his brothers…

he must die,

Their proposed penalty reflects the seriousness of stealing from a powerful Egyptian official. Their confidence rests on their belief that none of them has taken the cup.

Exo 21:12 Whoever strikes and kills a man must surely be put to death.
Gen 9:6 Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man his blood…
Num 35:31 You are not to accept a ransom for the life of a murderer…

and the rest will become slaves of my lord.”

The brothers offer collective submission if guilt is found among them. The test exposes their concern for Benjamin and prepares the way for Judah’s willingness to take Benjamin’s place.

Gen 47:19 Why should we perish before your eyes—we and our land…
1Sa 8:17 He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves…
Deu 20:11 If they accept your offer of peace and open their gates…

“As you say,” replied the steward.

The steward accepts the brothers’ proposal but immediately narrows its penalty, acting under Joseph’s direction to continue the test.

Luk 23:3 So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”…
Mat 27:11 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor…
Jhn 18:37 “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. You say that I am a king…

“But only the one who is found with the cup will be my slave,

The accusation falls upon the apparent offender alone. Since Benjamin carries the cup placed in his sack, the brothers face the prospect of losing Rachel’s remaining son.

Gen 43:18 But the brothers were frightened that they had been taken…
Jos 7:18-21 And he had the family of Zabdi come forward man by man,…
Exo 22:3 But if it happens after sunrise, there is guilt…

and the rest of you shall be free of blame.”

The others are offered release, creating the moment in which their loyalty to Benjamin and their father is revealed. Unlike their earlier treatment of Joseph, they do not abandon their brother.

Jos 2:19 If anyone goes out the door of your house into the street,…
Deu 24:16 Fathers shall not be put to death for their children,…
Ezk 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die.…

So each one quickly lowered his sack

The brothers responded without delay to the steward’s accusation, confident that the missing cup would not be found among them. Their readiness to submit to the search shows that they believed themselves innocent.

Gen 42:35 As they began emptying their sacks, there in each man's sack…
Gen 42:25 Then Joseph gave orders to fill their bags with grain,…

They placed their possessions before the Egyptian official, recognizing his authority and allowing a full inspection.

and opened it.

Each brother exposed his sack for examination, unaware that Joseph’s cup had been placed in Benjamin’s sack. The discovery would test whether they would abandon Benjamin as they had once abandoned Joseph.

Gen 42:27 At the place where they lodged for the night, …
Gen 43:21 But when we came to the place we lodged for the night,…
Gen 43:23 “It is fine,” said the steward. “Do not be afraid.…

The steward searched,

Joseph’s servant carried out the instructions exactly, acting with the authority entrusted to him over Joseph’s household. The search was designed to expose the brothers’ response when Benjamin appeared to be guilty.

Jos 7:16-18 So Joshua arose early the next morning…

and the cup was found in Benjamin’s sack.

The cup had been placed there by Joseph’s command. Benjamin’s apparent guilt tested whether his brothers would abandon him as they had once abandoned Joseph, preparing the way for Judah’s plea and the family’s reconciliation.

Then they all tore their clothes,

Overwhelmed by grief and fear, the brothers responded as men facing disaster. Benjamin’s arrest threatened not only his life but also their father Jacob, who had entrusted Benjamin to their care.

Gen 45:23 And he sent to his father the following: ten donkeys…

and returned to the city.

The brothers went back to face Joseph and answer the charge against Benjamin. Their return brought them into the crisis God would use to expose their changed hearts and prepare the way for Joseph’s revelation.

1Ki 22:36 As the sun was setting, the cry rang out in the army:…

Overcome by fear and desperation, the brothers bowed before Joseph as the ruler of Egypt. Without recognizing him, they fulfilled the dreams Joseph had received in his youth and placed themselves at the mercy of the brother they had wronged.

Gen 42:6 Now Joseph was the ruler of the land; …
Gen 37:9 Then Joseph had another dream and told it to his brothers.…

“What is this deed you have done?”

Joseph confronted his brothers as Egypt’s governor after the silver cup was found in Benjamin’s sack. The charge placed them under the full weight of Egyptian justice and tested whether they would abandon Benjamin as they had once abandoned Joseph.

Gen 3:13 Then the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this…
Gen 31:26 Then Laban said to Jacob, “What have you done?…

Joseph declared.

Speaking from the authority Pharaoh had entrusted to him, Joseph maintained his Egyptian role while drawing his brothers toward confession and repentance.

Gen 42:7 And when Joseph saw his brothers, he recognized them,…

Joseph spoke in a manner consistent with his public position and the circumstances surrounding the cup. God had given him unusual insight, yet the accusation served chiefly to expose his brothers’ hearts before he revealed himself to them.

Gen 30:27 But Laban replied, “If I have found favor in your eyes…
Lev 19:26 You must not eat anything with blood still in it.…
Deu 18:10 Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son…

“What can we say to my lord?” Judah replied.

Judah speaks for all the brothers before Egypt’s governor, recognizing Joseph’s authority over their lives and freedom.

Job 40:4 Behold, I am insignificant. How can I reply to You?…
Job 9:15 For even if I were right, I could not answer.…

Job 23:4 I would plead my case before Him and fill my mouth…
Psa 130:3 If You, O LORD, kept track of iniquities,…

How can we justify ourselves?

Judah does not claim that the brothers stole the cup; instead, he sees their crisis as the exposure of deeper guilt.

Job 25:4 How then can a man be just before God?…
Job 9:2 Yes, I know that it is so, but how can a mortal…
Rom 3:20 Therefore no one will be justified in His sight…

God has exposed the iniquity of your servants.

The brothers understand their distress as God’s judgment reaching back to their sin against Joseph. Though Joseph knows they are innocent of the charge involving the cup, their former wrongdoing has remained before God.

Psa 90:8 You have set our iniquities before You, our secret sins…
Num 32:23 But if you do not do this, you will certainly sin…
Luk 12:2 There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed…

We are now my lord’s slaves—

Judah offers the entire family group as servants, accepting a penalty far beyond what Joseph has required.

Exo 22:3 But if it happens after sunrise, there is guilt…
Jos 9:8 “We are your servants,” they said to Joshua.…

both we and the one who was found with the cup.”

By refusing to abandon Benjamin, Judah shows a changed heart from the days when he helped sell Joseph into slavery.

The man who was found with the cup

Benjamin appears to be guilty because Joseph’s silver cup was placed in his sack.

Exo 22:4 If what was stolen is actually found alive in his possession…
Gen 31:32 If you find your gods with anyone here, he shall not live!…
Jos 7:18 And he had the family of Zabdi come forward man by man,…

The proposed penalty directly recalls Joseph’s own sale into slavery and places his brothers in a position to reveal whether their hearts have changed.

Deu 15:12 If a fellow Hebrew, a man or a woman, is sold…

Judah Pleads for Benjamin

Then Judah approached Joseph

Judah, once involved in selling Joseph, now steps forward to represent his brothers and protect Benjamin. His willingness to speak places him in a position of leadership within the family and reveals a changed heart.

With humility and careful respect, Judah asks to speak directly to Egypt’s governor. He recognizes Joseph’s authority and seeks mercy for his family.

2Sa 14:12 Then the woman said, “Please, may your servant speak…
1Sa 25:24 She fell at his feet and said, “My lord,…
2Sa 14:15 Now therefore, I have come to present this matter…

Do not be angry with your servant,

The request reflects the danger facing Benjamin and the fear that Joseph’s decision could bring sorrow and ruin upon their father. Judah prepares to present the family’s circumstances and plead for Benjamin’s release.

Gen 18:32 Finally, Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry,…
Exo 32:22 “Do not be enraged, my lord,” Aaron replied.…

for you are equal to Pharaoh himself.

Joseph possessed authority second only to Pharaoh, with power over the grain supply and the fate of those who came before him. Judah’s acknowledgment of that authority heightens the seriousness of his appeal and the brothers’ dependence on Joseph’s mercy.

Gen 41:40 You shall be in charge of my house, and all my people…
Gen 41:44 I am Pharaoh, but without your permission,…
Gen 45:8 Therefore it was not you who sent me here, but God,…

My lord asked his servants,

Joseph’s brothers address him according to his rank as Egypt’s governor, unaware that he is the brother they sold into slavery. Their deference reflects the reversal Joseph had foreseen in his dreams, as the family now stands before him in need.

Gen 42:11 We are all sons of one man. Your servants are honest men…
Gen 42:12 “No,” he told them. “You have come to see if our land…

‘Do you have a father or a brother?’

Joseph draws out details about Jacob and Benjamin without disclosing his identity. His question prepares for the test involving Benjamin and reveals whether his brothers have changed since their earlier betrayal.

Gen 42:13 But they answered, “Your servants are twelve brothers.”…
Gen 43:27 He asked if they were well, and then he asked,…

And we answered,

Joseph’s brothers recount what they told the Egyptian ruler’s steward, continuing the account that led to Benjamin’s presence in Egypt.

Gen 43:3-5 But Judah replied, “The man solemnly warned us,…
Gen 42:31-34 But we told him, ‘We are honest men, not spies.…

and a younger brother,

The younger brother is Benjamin, Joseph’s only full brother and the youngest son of Jacob.

Gen 43:29 When Joseph looked up and saw his brother Benjamin,…
Gen 42:13 But they answered, “Your servants are twelve brothers.”…

the child of his old age.

Benjamin was born late in Jacob’s life and holds a place of special affection in the family.

Gen 24:36 My master’s wife Sarah has borne him a son…
Gen 21:2 So Sarah conceived and bore a son to Abraham in his old age…

The boy’s brother is dead.

The brothers still believe Joseph died after they sold him into slavery, unaware that he stands before them as Egypt’s governor.

Gen 37:31-33 Then they took Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a young goat,…
Gen 42:36 Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons.…
Gen 37:35 All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him,…

He is the only one of his mother’s sons left,

Benjamin is Rachel’s only surviving son in their father’s understanding, since Rachel died giving birth to him and Joseph is presumed dead.

Gen 42:38 But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down there with you,…
Gen 35:16-18 Later, they set out from Bethel, and while they were still…
Gen 30:22-24 Then God remembered Rachel. He listened to her…

and his father loves him.’

Jacob’s love for Benjamin reflects the grief he has carried over Joseph and explains his reluctance to let Benjamin leave Canaan.

Gen 37:4 When Joseph’s brothers saw that their father loved him…
Gen 25:28 Because Isaac had a taste for wild game, he loved Esau;…
2Sa 18:33 The king was shaken and went up to the chamber over the gate…

Then you told your servants,

Joseph recalls the brothers’ earlier report to him. Still unaware of his identity, they address Egypt’s ruler as servants, acknowledging his authority and their dependence on his favor.

Gen 42:33 Then the man who is lord of the land said to us,…
Gen 43:7 They replied, “The man questioned us in detail…”…
Gen 43:3 But Judah replied, “The man solemnly warned us,…

‘Bring him down to me

Joseph had required Benjamin’s presence before allowing further grain purchases. Benjamin was Rachel’s remaining son, and Jacob had guarded him closely since believing Joseph to be dead. The journey from Canaan to Egypt would place Benjamin within Joseph’s reach.

Gen 42:20 Then bring your youngest brother to me, so that…
Gen 42:19 If you are honest, leave one of your brothers…
Gen 43:13 Take your brother as well, and return to the man at once.

so that I can see him for myself.’

Joseph’s demand was not merely official. He longed to see his full brother after many years of separation, while also testing whether the other brothers had changed since they had sold him into slavery.

Gen 43:30 Joseph hurried out because he was moved to tears…
Gen 43:29 When Joseph looked up and saw his brother Benjamin,…
Job 19:27 I will see Him for myself; my eyes will behold Him…

So we said to my lord,

Joseph’s brothers continued to address him with the deference due Egypt’s governor, still unaware that he was their brother. Their words recount the earlier plea they made when Joseph demanded that Benjamin be brought to Egypt.

Gen 42:10 “Not so, my lord,” they replied. “Your servants have come…
Gen 42:30 The man who is lord of the land spoke harshly to us…
Gen 43:7 They replied, “The man questioned us in detail…”…

‘The boy cannot leave his father.

Benjamin was Jacob’s youngest son and Rachel’s only remaining son. Since Rachel’s death and Joseph’s presumed death, Jacob had guarded Benjamin closely, fearing another loss.

Gen 42:38 But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down there with you,…
Gen 43:5 But if you will not send him, we will not go;…
Gen 43:3 But Judah replied, “The man solemnly warned us,…

If he were to leave,

The brothers understood that bringing Benjamin to Egypt placed their father’s well-being in jeopardy. Their concern reveals both Jacob’s dependence on Benjamin and the weight of the responsibility they carried.

Gen 43:8 And Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me,…
Gen 43:4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down…
Gen 43:13 Take your brother as well, and return to the man at once.

his father would die.’

Jacob’s grief over Joseph had already deeply marked his life, and the brothers believed the loss of Benjamin would destroy him. Judah’s appeal shows that the brothers now recognized the pain their earlier sin had brought upon their father.

Gen 42:36 Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons.…
Gen 37:35 All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him,…
Gen 43:14 May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, …

But you said to your servants,

Judah recalls Joseph’s earlier command to the brothers, who had presented themselves before him as dependent subjects seeking grain during the famine.

Gen 42:15 And this is how you will be tested: As surely as Pharaoh…
Gen 42:20 Then bring your youngest brother to me, so that…
Gen 42:16 Send one of your number to get your brother;…

‘Unless your younger brother comes down with you,

Joseph required Benjamin’s presence before allowing further access to Egypt’s food supply. Benjamin was Jacob’s remaining son by Rachel and had become especially precious to his father after Joseph’s apparent death.

Gen 43:4 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down…
Gen 43:13 Take your brother as well, and return to the man at once.
Gen 42:36 Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons.…

you will not see my face again.’

The brothers could not return to Egypt or receive more grain without Benjamin. Joseph’s condition brought their earlier treatment of Joseph into sharp focus and tested whether they would protect Benjamin rather than abandon him.

Gen 43:3 But Judah replied, “The man solemnly warned us,…
Exo 10:29 “As you say,” Moses replied, “I will never see your face…”…
Exo 10:28 “Depart from me!” Pharaoh said to Moses.…

Now when we returned to your servant my father,

The brothers had gone back to Jacob in Canaan and reported Joseph’s demand that Benjamin accompany them on any return to Egypt. Calling Jacob “your servant” expresses the respect they show him while speaking before Egypt’s ruler.

Gen 42:29 When they reached their father Jacob in Canaan,…
Gen 45:25 So the brothers went up out of Egypt and came…

we relayed your words to him.

They faithfully told Jacob the conditions Joseph had set. Their report led to the difficult decision to bring Benjamin, advancing the events through which Joseph would preserve his family during the famine.

Gen 43:3 But Judah replied, “The man solemnly warned us,…
Gen 42:30 The man who is lord of the land spoke harshly to us…

Then our father said,

Jacob, the father of the twelve tribes, directed his sons during the famine that had left Canaan without sufficient food. His household depended on grain from Egypt, where Joseph had been placed in authority by God.

Gen 42:2 “Look,” he added, “I have heard that there is grain in Egypt…
Gen 43:11 Then their father Israel said to them, “If it must be so…
Act 7:12 When Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt,…

‘Go back

Jacob ordered another journey to Egypt despite the danger and uncertainty surrounding Benjamin. The brothers could not obtain more grain unless they returned under Joseph’s conditions.

Gen 43:13 Take your brother as well, and return to the man at once.
Gen 43:2 So when Jacob’s sons had eaten all the grain…

and buy us some food.’

The famine continued to threaten Jacob’s family, making another purchase necessary. Their repeated trips to Egypt brought them closer to Joseph’s revelation and to God’s preservation of the family through whom His covenant promises would continue.

Gen 42:3 So ten of Joseph’s brothers went down to buy grain…
Gen 42:5 So the sons of Israel were among those who came to buy grain…
Gen 41:57 And every nation came to Joseph in Egypt to buy grain…

But we answered,

Judah recounts the brothers’ earlier explanation to Jacob when the grain was gone.

Gen 43:7 They replied, “The man questioned us in detail…”…
Gen 42:13 But they answered, “Your servants are twelve brothers.”…
Gen 42:11 We are all sons of one man. Your servants are honest men…

‘We cannot go down there unless our younger brother goes with us.

Joseph had required Benjamin’s presence before granting them another audience or more food.

Gen 43:4-5 If you will send our brother with us, we will go down…
Gen 43:13 Take your brother as well, and return to the man at once.
Gen 42:20 Then bring your youngest brother to me, so that…

So if our younger brother is not with us,

Jacob’s reluctance to send Benjamin placed the family in a desperate position as the famine continued.

Gen 42:38 But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down there with you,…
Gen 43:8-9 And Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me,…
Gen 42:36 Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons.…

we cannot see the man.’

The brothers still did not know that Egypt’s ruler was Joseph, whom they had sold years before.

Gen 43:3 But Judah replied, “The man solemnly warned us,…
Gen 43:14-15 May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, …
Gen 42:30 The man who is lord of the land spoke harshly to us…

And your servant my father said to us,

Judah recounts Jacob’s words as he appeals to Joseph for Benjamin’s release. By calling Jacob Joseph’s servant, Judah speaks with humility before Egypt’s ruler while emphasizing the sorrow that Benjamin’s loss would bring to their aged father.

Gen 42:36-38 Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons.…
Gen 43:6-8 “Why did you bring this trouble upon me?” Israel asked.…
Gen 37:33-35 His father recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe!”…

‘You know that my wife bore me two sons.

Jacob speaks of Rachel, the wife he loved, and of her two sons, Joseph and Benjamin. Joseph was believed to be dead, leaving Benjamin as Rachel’s only remaining son and the chief object of Jacob’s concern.

Gen 46:19 The sons of Jacob’s wife Rachel: Joseph and Benjamin.
Gen 35:16-18 Later, they set out from Bethel, and while they were still…
Gen 30:22-24 Then God remembered Rachel. He listened to her…

When one of them was gone,

Jacob recalls the loss of Joseph, his beloved son, whom his brothers sold into slavery out of envy. Joseph’s disappearance left Jacob convinced that he had been taken from him forever.

Gen 37:30 returned to his brothers and said, “The boy is gone…
Gen 42:13 But they answered, “Your servants are twelve brothers.”…
Gen 42:36 Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons.…

I said: “Surely he has been torn to pieces.”

Joseph’s brothers deceived their father by presenting his bloodstained robe, leading Jacob to believe that a wild animal had killed him. Their betrayal brought lasting grief into the family and concealed Joseph’s true fate for many years.

Gen 37:33 His father recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe!”…
1Ki 13:24 As he went on his way, a lion met him on the road…
1Ki 13:28 and he went and found the body lying in the road,…

And I have not seen him since.

Jacob’s sorrow remained unresolved until he learned that Joseph was alive and ruling in Egypt. What appeared to be an irreversible loss became part of God’s provision for preserving Jacob’s family during famine.

Gen 45:28 “Enough!” declared Israel. “My son Joseph is still alive!…”…
Gen 46:30 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Finally I can die,…
Gen 37:35 All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him,…

Now if you also take this one from me

Jacob speaks of Benjamin, the only remaining son of Rachel in his care. Having believed Joseph dead for many years, he cannot bear the thought of losing Benjamin as well.

Gen 42:36 Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons.…
Gen 43:14 May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, …
Gen 37:35 All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him,…

and harm comes to him,

The journey to Egypt seemed dangerous to Jacob, especially during a severe famine when travel and foreign authorities posed real risks. His concern reveals both his affection for Benjamin and the lasting grief caused by Joseph’s disappearance.

Gen 42:4 But Jacob did not send Joseph’s brother Benjamin…
Gen 43:9 I will guarantee his safety. You may hold me responsible.…
Pro 22:3 The prudent see danger and take cover, but…

you will bring my gray hair down to Sheol in sorrow.’

Jacob believes Benjamin’s death would hasten his own death in overwhelming grief. His words portray an aged father who sees the loss of another beloved son as more than he can endure.

Gen 42:38 But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down there with you,…
1Ki 2:6 So act according to your wisdom, and do not let…
Gen 37:34 Then Jacob tore his clothes, put sackcloth around his waist,…

So if the boy is not with us when I return to your servant,

Judah explains that Benjamin’s absence would devastate Jacob. The famine had driven the family to Egypt for grain, but Joseph’s demand that Benjamin remain created a crisis for the brothers and for their father.

Gen 42:36-38 Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons.…
Gen 43:14 May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, …
Gen 37:33-35 His father recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe!”…

and if my father, whose life is wrapped up in the boy’s life,

Benjamin was Jacob’s remaining son by Rachel, and Jacob feared losing him as he believed he had lost Joseph. Judah recognizes that returning without Benjamin would likely bring Jacob’s life to an end in grief.

1Sa 25:29 And should someone pursue you and seek your life…
Deu 30:20 that you may love the LORD your God, obey Him…
1Sa 18:1 After David had finished speaking with Saul,…

sees that the boy is not with us,

Jacob’s deepest fear is that Benjamin will not return from Egypt. Having already lost Joseph, whom he believed dead, Jacob treasures Benjamin as Rachel’s remaining son. The brothers know that Benjamin’s absence would reopen Jacob’s old grief and confirm his worst fears.

Jer 31:15 This is what the LORD says: “A voice is heard in Ramah…
Mat 2:18 A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning,…
2Sa 19:1-4 Then it was reported to Joab, “The king is weeping”…

he will die.

Jacob’s advanced age and sorrow make the loss of Benjamin seem unbearable. Judah presents his father’s life as bound up with Benjamin’s safety, showing the weight of the brothers’ responsibility.

2Sa 18:33 The king was shaken and went up to the chamber over the gate…
2Sa 12:16-18 David pleaded with God for the boy. He fasted…
1Sa 4:17-18 The messenger answered, “Israel has fled…

Then your servants will have brought the gray hair of your servant our father

Judah speaks humbly before Joseph and accepts responsibility for the effect their actions would have on Jacob. Their father’s gray hair emphasizes his frailty and the duty his sons have to protect him.

Gen 42:38 But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down there with you,…
1Ki 2:6 So act according to your wisdom, and do not let…
1Ki 2:9 Now therefore, do not hold him guiltless,…

down to Sheol in sorrow.

Judah fears that Jacob’s grief would carry him to the grave. His appeal reveals a changed heart: the brothers who once caused their father sorrow over Joseph now seek to spare him further loss.

Gen 37:35 All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him,…
Psa 116:3 The ropes of death entangled me; the anguish…
Psa 88:3-5 For my soul is full of troubles, and my life…

Indeed, your servant guaranteed the boy’s safety to my father,

Judah had personally pledged Benjamin’s protection to Jacob, accepting responsibility for the younger brother’s return. His appeal reveals the change in Judah since Joseph was sold: he now places his own welfare beneath that of his father and brother.

Gen 43:9 I will guarantee his safety. You may hold me responsible.…
Pro 6:1-3 My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor…
Job 17:3 Give me, I pray, the pledge You demand.…

saying, ‘If I do not return him to you,

Benjamin’s safe return was essential to Jacob, whose grief over Joseph had made him fearful of losing Rachel’s remaining son. Judah knew that failure would bring lasting sorrow upon his father.

Gen 42:37 Then Reuben said to his father, “You may kill my two sons”…
Gen 28:20-21 Then Jacob made a vow, saying, “If God will be with me…
Psa 121:8 The LORD will watch over your coming and going…

I will bear the guilt before you, my father,

Judah offered himself as the one accountable for Benjamin’s loss. Rather than shift blame, he was willing to bear the consequences personally, anticipating his later offer to remain as Joseph’s slave in Benjamin’s place.

Lev 5:17 If someone sins and violates any of the LORD’s commandments…
Isa 53:11-12 After the anguish of His soul, He will see the light of life…
Ezk 18:20 The soul who sins is the one who will die.…

all my life.’

Judah’s promise was not temporary or conditional. He understood that breaking his word would remain a burden between him and his father for the rest of his life.

1Sa 1:28 I now dedicate the boy to the LORD. For as long as he lives…
1Sa 1:11 And she made a vow, saying, “O LORD of Hosts, …
Exo 21:5-6 But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master…

Now please let your servant stay here

Judah offers himself in Benjamin’s place, revealing the depth of his change since the days when he helped sell Joseph. He accepts personal loss rather than bring further grief upon his father.

Gen 43:8-9 And Judah said to his father Israel, “Send the boy with me,…
Exo 32:32 “Yet now, if You would only forgive their sin”…
Rom 9:3 For I could wish that I myself were cursed…

as my lord’s slave

By submitting to Joseph’s authority, Judah is willing to bear the full consequence of Benjamin’s situation. His offer shows loyalty to his family above his own freedom.

Deu 15:16-17 But if your servant says, ‘I do not want to leave you,’…
Exo 21:5-6 But if the servant declares, ‘I love my master…
Lev 25:44-46 Your menservants and maidservants shall come…

in place of the boy.

Judah seeks to preserve Benjamin’s life and secure his return to Jacob. His willingness to suffer for another foreshadows the biblical pattern of substitutionary sacrifice.

Gen 22:13 Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram…
Exo 13:13 You must redeem every firstborn donkey with a lamb…
1Pe 3:18 For Christ also suffered for sins once for all,…

Let him return with his brothers.

Benjamin’s safe return would spare Jacob the crushing loss of another beloved son and preserve the unity of the family through whom God’s covenant purposes would continue.

Gen 43:13-14 Take your brother as well, and return to the man at once.…
Gen 45:24 Then Joseph sent his brothers on their way…

For how can I go back to my father without the boy?

Judah accepts responsibility for Benjamin’s safety and recognizes that returning without him would crush Jacob. Having once participated in selling Joseph, Judah now shows genuine change by placing his father’s welfare and Benjamin’s life above his own freedom.

Gen 42:36 Jacob said to them, “You have deprived me of my sons.…
Gen 43:14 May God Almighty grant you mercy before the man, …

I could not bear to see the misery that would overwhelm him.”

Jacob had never recovered from the loss of Joseph, and Benjamin’s disappearance would bring renewed grief. Judah’s concern reveals his willingness to suffer in Benjamin’s place, setting the stage for Joseph’s revelation and the restoration of the family.

Gen 42:38 But Jacob replied, “My son will not go down there with you,…
Gen 37:35 All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him,…
2Sa 18:33 The king was shaken and went up to the chamber over the gate…
