The Parable of the Shrewd Manager

Jesus also said to His disciples,

Jesus directed this parable to His followers, those committed to learning from Him, after teaching about the Father’s joy over repentant sinners. He now turned to the responsibilities of those entrusted with what belongs to another.

The manager served as the owner’s representative, overseeing business dealings and resources. Reports had reached the rich man that his steward had failed in his duty and abused the trust placed in him.

of wasting his possessions.

The accusation was not that the manager had lost his own property, but that he had squandered what belonged to his master. The parable presents stewardship as a position of accountability: those entrusted with resources must answer to the one who owns them.

The manager intends to win favor from his master’s debtors by reducing what they owe. In a society where hospitality and reciprocal obligations were vital, he expects those helped by his actions to receive and support him after he loses his position.

By reducing the debt twenty percent, the manager gave the man a significant benefit and expected hospitality or support in return. Jesus’ parable exposes the manager’s shrewd use of temporary resources, not his dishonesty.

The master commended the dishonest manager

The master approved not of the manager’s dishonesty, but of his foresight in preparing for the consequences of his dismissal. The manager used his remaining authority to secure favor with his master’s debtors.

Whoever is faithful with very little

Faithfulness in ordinary responsibilities reveals a person’s character. In a world where servants often managed a household’s property and finances, reliability in small assignments showed whether a servant could be trusted with greater authority. Even minor possessions and duties belong under God’s care.

Luk 19:17 His master replied, ‘Well done, good servant!’…
Mat 25:21 His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!’…
1Co 4:2 Now it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.

will also be faithful with much,

Proven integrity leads to greater trust. Joseph’s faithful service in Potiphar’s house preceded his appointment over Egypt, showing that responsibility is often entrusted according to demonstrated character.

Luk 12:42-44 And the Lord answered, “Who then is the faithful and wise……
Mat 25:23 His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!’…
Gen 39:4 Joseph found favor in his sight and became his attendant.…

and whoever is dishonest with very little

Small acts of deceit are not insignificant, because they expose a willingness to violate trust for personal gain. Ananias and Sapphira’s deception over money showed the seriousness of dishonesty before God.

Pro 11:1 Dishonest scales are an abomination to the LORD,…
Pro 20:10 Differing weights and unequal measures—both are detestable…
Pro 16:11 Honest scales and balances are from the LORD;…

will also be dishonest with much.

Character remains consistent when circumstances change. A person who rejects integrity in lesser matters cannot be relied upon when greater resources, authority, or responsibility are placed in his hands.

Jhn 12:6 Judas did not say this because he cared about the poor,…
Act 5:1-11 Now a man named Ananias, together with his wife…
Mat 25:26-30 ‘You wicked, lazy servant!’ replied his master.…

So if you have not been faithful with worldly wealth,

Earthly money and possessions belong ultimately to God, who places them in human hands for temporary use and accountable management. Wealth may provide comfort and influence, but it is uncertain and cannot secure eternal life. Faithfulness is shown in honest dealings, generosity, and responsible care for what has been entrusted.

1Ti 6:17-19 Instruct those who are rich in the present age…
Pro 3:9-10 Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits…
Mat 6:19-21 Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth…

who will entrust you with true riches?

True riches are the lasting blessings and responsibilities of God’s kingdom, including spiritual understanding, service, and the inheritance reserved for believers. Faithfulness in ordinary earthly matters reveals whether a person can be trusted with what has eternal value.

Mat 25:21 His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!’…
1Co 4:2 Now it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.
1Pe 1:4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable,…

And if you have not been faithful with the belongings of another,

Servants were often entrusted with a master’s household, fields, money, or business affairs. Joseph managed Potiphar’s estate with such integrity that everything was placed under his care. Faithfulness in what belongs to another reveals a person’s character and readiness for greater trust. All earthly possessions and opportunities ultimately belong to God and are placed in human hands for responsible use.

1Co 4:2 Now it is required of stewards that they be found faithful.
Gen 39:4-6 Joseph found favor in his sight and became his attendant.…
Mat 25:21 His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!’…

who will give you belongings of your own?

Those who prove unreliable with entrusted responsibilities cannot expect greater authority or a lasting inheritance. Jesus points beyond temporary earthly stewardship to the inheritance God has prepared for His people. Faithfulness in present responsibilities demonstrates readiness to receive the greater privileges and responsibilities of God’s kingdom.

Mat 24:47 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge…
Luk 12:44 Truly I tell you, he will put him in charge…
Mat 25:29 For everyone who has will be given more…

No servant can serve two masters.

A household servant belonged to one master’s authority and was expected to carry out that master’s will. Competing masters would eventually demand conflicting obedience.

Mat 6:24 No one can serve two masters: Either he will hate the one…
Rom 6:16 Do you not know that when you offer yourselves…
Jos 24:15 But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD,…

Either he will hate the one and love the other,

When loyalty is divided, one master will be preferred and the other rejected. “Hate” and “love” here are Semitic expressions denoting preference and priority rather than emotional extremes. The issue is not merely emotion but the direction of a person’s will and obedience.

Mal 1:2-3 “I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you ask……
Deu 21:15-17 If a man has two wives, one beloved and the other unloved…
Gen 29:30-31 Jacob slept with Rachel as well. So he worked for Laban…

or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other.

Lasting devotion to one authority exposes contempt for the rival claim. Wholehearted service cannot be shared between opposing masters.

1Sa 2:30 Therefore, the LORD, the God of Israel, declares:…
1Ki 18:21 Then Elijah approached all the people and said,…
2Ki 17:33 They worshiped the LORD, but they also served their own gods…

You cannot serve both God and money.”

Wealth becomes a master when it governs decisions, desires, and security. God requires exclusive allegiance, and material possessions must remain under His authority rather than replacing Him.

1Ti 6:9-10 Those who want to be rich, however, fall into temptation…
1Ti 6:17-19 Instruct those who are rich in the present age…

The Law and the Prophets

The Pharisees, who were lovers of money,

The Pharisees were influential religious leaders known for careful observance of the Law and their oral traditions. Yet many prized wealth and social standing, exposing a contradiction between their public piety and their hearts.

Luk 11:39-42 Then the Lord said, “Now you Pharisees clean the outside……

Jesus had taught that wealth must be used faithfully under God’s authority and that no one can serve both God and money. His teaching directly confronted the values the Pharisees held.

The Law and the Prophets were proclaimed until John.

God revealed His covenant will to Israel through the Law (Torah), the first five books traditionally attributed to Moses, and the Prophets until the ministry of John the Baptist. John stood at the close of that era, preparing Israel for the Messiah and announcing His arrival. With Christ, the promises and expectations recorded in the Old Testament began to be fulfilled.

Since that time, the gospel of the kingdom of God is being preached,

John and Jesus proclaimed the good news that God’s kingdom had drawn near in the person and work of Christ. The call was no longer merely to await the promised King, but to repent, believe, and receive the salvation He brought.

and everyone is forcing his way into it.

The kingdom’s arrival produced an urgent response among many who recognized the authority of Jesus’ message. People pressed forward to hear Him and sought entrance into God’s kingdom, while many religious leaders resisted the truth He proclaimed.

But it is easier for heaven and earth to pass away

Heaven and earth encompass the whole created order, established by God and sustained by His power. Even the collapse of creation would be more conceivable than any failure of God’s revealed will. Jesus affirms that God’s purposes do not change with human opinion, religious neglect, or the passing of generations.

Every part of the Law carries divine authority, including its smallest commands—even a single stroke of a pen, the smallest letter or part of a letter in the Hebrew alphabet. Jesus did not set aside the Law but fulfilled its righteous demands and brought its promises to their intended completion. God’s standard remains perfect, and His Word cannot be altered or rendered void.

Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery,

Marriage was established by God as a lifelong covenant in which husband and wife become one flesh. Although the Law regulated divorce because of human sin, it did not redefine God’s purpose for marriage. Jesus confronts the common practice of setting aside a wife for personal convenience and declares that remarriage after such a divorce violates the original marital bond.

Mat 19:9 Now I tell you that whoever divorces his wife,…
Mrk 10:11 So He told them, “Whoever divorces his wife…
1Co 7:10-11 To the married I give this command: A wife must not separate…

and he who marries a divorced woman commits adultery.

A divorced woman was often left vulnerable in a society where her security depended largely on her household. By treating marriage to a wrongly divorced woman as adultery, Jesus rejects the assumption that a husband could dissolve a marriage at will. His teaching upholds the enduring nature of the marriage covenant and exposes divorce and remarriage as matters of moral accountability before God.

The Rich Man and Lazarus

Now there was a rich man

Jesus begins a parable contrasting a man of great earthly privilege with Lazarus, a destitute beggar. Though the rich man remains unnamed, his wealth and conduct define his role in the account.

who lived each day in joyous splendor.

And a beggar named Lazarus

Lazarus, whose name means “God has helped,” was a poor man known personally by name in Jesus’ account. His condition stood in sharp contrast to the wealthy man’s comfort, yet his name anticipates the help and vindication he would receive from God.

covered with sores

Lazarus suffered severe physical affliction as well as poverty. His sores likely made him weak, dependent, and socially avoided, deepening the humiliation of his condition. His suffering exposes the rich man’s indifference and prepares for the reversal that follows.

Isa 1:6 From the sole of your foot to the top of your head,…
Deu 28:27 The LORD will afflict you with the boils of Egypt,…

and longing to be fed with the crumbs that fell from the rich man’s table.

Lazarus lay at the gate of a man who had abundant food, yet he received nothing from the table. The contrast exposes the rich man’s indifference: he could have relieved Lazarus’s hunger without diminishing his own comfort. Lazarus depended on scraps that servants or guests might discard, showing the depth of his poverty and exclusion.

Even the dogs came and licked his sores.

Street dogs, regarded as unclean scavengers, approached the helpless beggar while the rich man ignored him. Their licking of Lazarus’s sores, believed to have healing properties, deepens the scene of his misery and abandonment while suggesting unintended compassion. The man surrounded by wealth failed to show the basic mercy that even animals appeared to offer, preparing for the reversal of their conditions that follows.

The fire portrays the anguish of divine judgment. The rich man’s condition follows his earthly life of self-indulgence and disregard for the needy man at his gate.

He still speaks as though Lazarus could be sent at his command, showing no clear change in his attitude toward the poor man he had ignored. Even in judgment, he seeks relief through Lazarus rather than acknowledging his own guilt.

to my father’s house,

The rich man remembers his family and desires that his brothers be warned. His father’s house represents the household that shared his privileges, including access to God’s revealed word, yet remained in danger of the same judgment.

Jos 24:15 But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD,…
Act 16:31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus”…

for I have five brothers.

The rich man’s concern reveals that he understands the danger facing his own household. Though he showed no mercy to Lazarus during his life, he now recognizes that his brothers remain on the same path of unbelief and self-indulgence.

Psa 49:7-9 No man can possibly redeem his brother or pay his ransom…
Rom 9:1-3 I speak the truth in Christ; I am not lying…

Let him warn them,

He asks for Lazarus to be sent as a messenger, hoping that an extraordinary witness from the dead would lead them to repent. His request shows that death has removed all doubt about judgment, yet it has not changed his condition.

so that they will not also end up in this place of torment.’

The rich man speaks of a real destination of suffering after death for those who reject God’s revealed truth. His fear for his brothers underscores the finality of judgment and the urgency of responding to God while life remains.

Mat 25:41 Then He will say to those on His left, ‘Depart from Me,…
Mrk 9:43-48 If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off.…
Rev 14:10-11 he too will drink the wine of God’s anger…

But Abraham replied,

Abraham speaks as the covenant patriarch, representing the testimony God had entrusted to Israel. From his place among the righteous, he confirms that God’s revealed word is the decisive witness to those still living.

Gen 18:27 Then Abraham answered, “Now that I have ventured to speak…
Gen 18:23 Abraham stepped forward and said, “Will You really…

‘They have Moses and the Prophets;

The rich man’s brothers possessed the Scriptures of Israel, containing God’s law, His warnings against sin, and His promises of mercy and redemption. They were not without knowledge of God’s will or the consequences of rejecting it.

Luk 24:27 And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets,…
Act 26:22 But I have had God’s help to this day…
Luk 24:44 Jesus said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you…

let your brothers listen to them.’

Their need was not further evidence but obedient attention to what God had already spoken. Moses and the Prophets gave sufficient testimony to call them to repentance and faith.

Deu 18:15 The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me…
Act 3:22 For Moses said, ‘The Lord your God will raise up…
Deu 18:19 And I will hold accountable anyone who does not listen…

‘No, father Abraham,’ he said,

The rich man, suffering in Hades, still calls Abraham his father, identifying himself with Abraham’s descendants. Yet physical descent from Abraham has not spared him from judgment. He appeals for mercy, but his condition is fixed.

Luk 3:8 Produce fruit, then, in keeping with repentance.…
Jhn 8:39-40 “Abraham is our father,” they replied.…
Mat 3:9 And do not presume to say to yourselves,…

‘but if someone is sent to them from the dead,

He thinks his brothers would respond if they received extraordinary proof of the reality of judgment. His request anticipates the resurrection of Christ, though even the testimony of one raised from the dead does not overcome unbelief where God’s revealed truth is rejected.

1Sa 28:15-19 Then Samuel said to Saul, “Why have you disturbed me?”…
Jhn 11:43-44 After Jesus had said this, He called out in a loud voice…
Jhn 12:9-11 Meanwhile a large crowd of Jews learned that Jesus was there…

they will repent.’

The rich man desires that his brothers turn from the same self-indulgent life that brought him to ruin. Abraham’s answer makes clear that God has already given sufficient warning through Moses and the Prophets, which call sinners to repent and obey Him.

Mat 12:41 The men of Nineveh will stand at the judgment…
Luk 13:3-5 No, I tell you. But unless you repent, …
Act 17:30-31 Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times,…

Then Abraham said to him,

Abraham speaks as the covenant patriarch and representative of those who belong to God by faith. His answer confirms that the rich man’s brothers already possess sufficient revelation.

Gen 18:23-33 Abraham stepped forward and said, “Will You really…
Gen 17:18-19 And Abraham said to God, “O that Ishmael might live…
Gen 24:2-7 So Abraham instructed the chief servant of his household…

‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets,

God had given Israel His Law and prophetic warnings—the Hebrew Scriptures, including the Torah and the writings of the prophets—calling His people to repentance, faith, and obedience. Their refusal would not result from lack of evidence but from unwillingness to submit to God’s word.

Luk 24:25-27 Then Jesus said to them, “O foolish ones,…
Luk 24:44-47 Jesus said to them, “These are the words I spoke to you…
Jhn 5:45-47 Do not think that I will accuse you before the Father.…

they will not be persuaded even if someone rises from the dead.’”

The warning anticipates the unbelief that would remain even after Jesus rose from the dead. Miraculous signs cannot overcome a hardened heart apart from faith in the truth God has already revealed.

Jhn 11:43-45 After Jesus had said this, He called out in a loud voice…
Mat 28:11-15 While the women were on their way, some of the guards…
Jhn 20:24-29 Now Thomas called Didymus, one of the Twelve…
