Kings of the South and North

“And I, in the first year of Darius the Mede,

Darius ruled Babylon after its fall to the Medo-Persian Empire in 539 BC, during the transition that led to the Jewish exiles’ return under Cyrus’s decree.

The angel supported Darius in his appointed rule, showing that God directed the rise and stability of earthly kingdoms for the fulfillment of His purposes.

Now then, I will tell you the truth:

The angel announces a reliable disclosure of events that will unfold in the kingdoms affecting God’s people. Daniel is shown that history will proceed according to God’s sovereign plan.

Three more kings will arise in Persia,

After Cyrus came Cambyses, the usurper Bardiya, and Darius I. Each continued Persian rule over the vast empire that included Judah.

The fourth ruler was Xerxes I, whose immense resources supported his imperial ambitions. He is widely identified with Ahasuerus, the Persian king in Esther.

Xerxes gathered troops and resources from throughout his empire for a massive invasion of Greece. His campaign brought Persia into decisive conflict with the Greek states, preparing the way for Greece’s later rise under Alexander the Great.

His empire extended from Greece and Egypt through Persia to the borders of India. Though brief, his rule united vast and diverse territories under his personal command and accelerated the spread of Greek language, institutions, and culture.

Alexander faced no rival capable of restraining his ambitions. He directed military campaigns, appointed rulers, founded cities, and reshaped the political order of the conquered lands according to his own purposes.

Alexander the Great rose rapidly from Macedonia to rule an empire stretching from Greece and Egypt to India. His military victories brought the Persian Empire under his control and spread Greek language and culture throughout the eastern Mediterranean and Near East.

Alexander died in Babylon in 323 BC, and his empire soon fractured through conflict among his leading generals. The principal divisions eventually came under Cassander in Macedonia and Greece, Lysimachus in Thrace and Asia Minor, Seleucus in Syria and the East, and Ptolemy in Egypt.

In his place a despicable person will arise;

Antiochus IV Epiphanes succeeded Seleucus IV and proved to be a cruel, self-exalting ruler. His later oppression of the Jewish people and desecration of the temple revealed the contemptible character foretold here.
