Berean Study Bible Israel’s StubbornnessGod summons the people of Israel to hear His charge against them. Though they bear the name of their forefather Jacob, their conduct has not reflected the faithfulness expected of the covenant people. Jer 2:4 Hear the word of the LORD, O house of Jacob,… you who are called by the name of Israel, Israel was the name given to Jacob by God, marking the nation’s distinct identity and calling. They claimed that identity publicly, yet many treated it as an honor without accepting its obligations. Isa 44:5 One will say, ‘I belong to the LORD,’ … who have descended from the line of Judah, Judah was the tribe through which David’s royal house would come, and from which the promised Messiah would later be born. Their ancestry reminded them of God’s enduring promises, but it did not excuse their unfaithfulness. 1Ch 5:2 And though Judah prevailed over his brothers, … who swear by the name of the LORD, The people invoked the Lord’s name in oaths and religious observances. Such acts were meant to reflect reverence for God and accountability before Him, but their words were often unsupported by obedience. Deu 10:20 You are to fear the LORD your God and serve Him.… who invoke the God of Israel— They continued to call upon the God who had delivered and preserved Israel. Their worship retained the forms of covenant faith, even while their hearts and actions departed from it. 2Ki 19:15 And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD: “O LORD, God of Israel… but not in truth or righteousness— Their profession was marked by hypocrisy. They claimed loyalty to the Lord while resisting His commands, exposing the gap between outward religion and genuine faithfulness. Jer 4:2 ‘As surely as the LORD lives,’ in truth, in justice,… who indeed call yourselves after the holy city Jerusalem, the place of the Temple and the center of Israel’s worship, marked them as a people set apart for God. Yet their association with the holy city had become a source of empty confidence rather than evidence of faithful obedience. Dan 9:19 O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act!… and lean on the God of Israel; They claimed the God of the covenant as their support and protector, though their history showed repeated dependence on idols, political alliances, and their own strength. 2Ki 18:5 Hezekiah trusted in the LORD, the God of Israel.… the LORD of Hosts is His name. The God they professed to trust is the sovereign ruler over heaven’s armies and all earthly powers. His name exposes the contrast between His holiness and power and their insincere worship. Jer 10:16 The Portion of Jacob is not like these, for He is… I foretold the former things long ago; God had announced earlier events through His prophets before they occurred, demonstrating His sovereign direction of Israel’s history and His faithfulness to His covenant purposes. Isa 45:21 Speak up and present your case—yes, let them take counsel… they came out of My mouth and I proclaimed them. The prophecies originated with God, not human imagination. He made His purposes known publicly through His chosen messengers so that their fulfillment would identify Him as the true God. Isa 45:23 By Myself I have sworn; truth has gone out from My mouth,… Suddenly I acted, At the appointed time, God intervened decisively to accomplish what He had declared. His actions were neither delayed by human resistance nor dependent on human strength. Isa 29:5 But your many foes will be like fine dust… and they came to pass. The fulfillment of former prophecies confirmed the certainty of God’s word. What He has spoken concerning His people, judgment, redemption, and the future will likewise be fulfilled. 1Ki 8:56 Blessed be the LORD, who has given rest to His people Israel… For I knew that you are stubborn; God had long known Israel’s persistent resistance to His will. Their history included repeated rebellion, idolatry, and distrust even after deliverance from Egypt, provision in the wilderness, and the giving of the law. Their conduct did not surprise God; it showed the settled condition of a people unwilling to obey Him. Deu 31:27 For I know how rebellious and stiff-necked you are.… your neck is iron Israel refused to bend in humble submission to God’s authority. Like an unyielding neck that will not bow, the nation resisted correction and persisted in self-will despite God’s warnings and acts of mercy. Jer 17:23 Yet they would not listen or incline their ear… and your forehead is bronze. Their defiance was openly fixed and difficult to penetrate. Bronze conveys hardness and durability, portraying a people whose thoughts and attitudes had become resistant to truth, discipline, and repentance. Ezk 3:7 But the house of Israel will be unwilling to listen to you,… Therefore I declared it to you long ago; God had made His purposes known to Israel through His prophets before their fulfillment. He rules history and had foreseen both Judah’s coming exile and the deliverance He would bring. Isa 42:9 Behold, the former things have happened, and now… I announced it before it came to pass, The fulfillment of what God had foretold would demonstrate that events were directed by Him, not by chance or human power. Israel’s return from Babylon would confirm His faithfulness to His covenant. Jhn 13:19 I am telling you now before it happens… so that you could not claim, Israel had repeatedly been drawn into idolatry. God’s advance revelation removed any excuse for assigning His works to false gods. Isa 41:22-24 Let them come and tell us what will happen.… ‘My idol has done this; Idols had no power to bring judgment, preserve a people, or accomplish deliverance. Yet many in Israel had treated them as though they controlled the future. Psa 115:4-8 Their idols are silver and gold, made by the hands of men.… my carved image and molten god has ordained it.’ Objects fashioned by human hands could not decree or fulfill anything. The Lord alone had declared what would happen and brought it to pass. Hab 2:18-19 What use is an idol, that a craftsman should carve it… You have heard these things; Israel had received God’s earlier declarations through Isaiah and had seen His warnings and promises confirmed in history. Isa 46:9 Remember what happened long ago, for I am God,… look at them all. The fulfillment of His word stood before them as evidence that the Lord directs events and remains faithful to what He has spoken. Isa 41:20 so that all may see and know, may consider and understand,… Will you not acknowledge them? God confronts their refusal to admit what His works had made clear. Psa 107:43 Let him who is wise pay heed to these things… From now on I will tell you of new things, He announces further acts in His plan, including events not previously disclosed. Isa 42:9 Behold, the former things have happened, and now… hidden things unknown to you. These future purposes would reveal His sovereignty and prevent Israel from claiming that its idols or human wisdom had foretold them. Jer 33:3 Call to Me, and I will answer and show you… They are created now, and not long ago; God brings His purposes to pass at the appointed time. Israel’s coming deliverance from Babylon and the events surrounding it would display His rule over nations and history. Isa 42:9 Behold, the former things have happened, and now… you have not heard of them before today. The Lord reveals what His people could not discover through tradition, experience, or human wisdom. Their exile had not placed His promises beyond reach; He was still directing their future. Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan… So you cannot claim, ‘I already knew them!’ Israel could not take credit for foreseeing God’s work. The fulfillment of His word would expose human pride and confirm that the Lord alone declares and accomplishes His purposes. Dan 2:22 He reveals the deep and hidden things; He knows… You have never heard; Israel had received God’s law, warnings, and promises through Moses and the prophets, yet repeatedly refused to obey. Their problem was not lack of revelation but persistent resistance to it. Deu 29:4 Yet to this day the LORD has not given you… you have never understood; They did not receive God’s words with faith or allow them to govern their conduct. Though they knew His mighty acts and covenant requirements, they continued in unbelief and idolatry. Mat 13:14 In them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled:… for a long time your ears have not been open. From the wilderness generation onward, Israel’s history was marked by recurring rebellion against the Lord’s commands. Their spiritual insensitivity had become deeply established. Job 33:16 He opens their ears and terrifies them with warnings For I knew how deceitful you are; God knew that His people would deal treacherously with Him, often making outward professions of loyalty while turning to other gods and relying on human strength. Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.… you have been called a rebel from birth. Israel’s rebellion appeared early in its national history, including the complaints, unbelief, and idolatry displayed after the Exodus. God’s foreknowledge of their unfaithfulness magnifies His patience and faithfulness to His covenant. Psa 58:3 The wicked are estranged from the womb; the liars go astray… For the sake of My name God acted to preserve the honor of His holy name, which Israel’s rebellion had profaned among the nations. His faithfulness to His covenant and His revealed character governed His dealings with His people. Ezk 36:22 Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is… I will delay My wrath; Though Israel deserved judgment for idolatry and unfaithfulness, God did not immediately bring the full punishment their sin required. His patience left room for repentance and preserved the people through whom His promises would continue. Psa 78:38 And yet He was compassionate; He forgave their iniquity… for the sake of My praise By showing mercy while maintaining His righteousness, God displayed His power, faithfulness, and authority before Israel and the surrounding nations. Isa 43:21 The people I formed for Myself will declare My praise. I will restrain it, The withholding of judgment came by God’s deliberate will, not because Israel had earned mercy or escaped His control. Isa 42:14 I have kept silent from ages past; I have remained quiet… so that you will not be cut off. God preserved a remnant rather than destroying Israel completely, keeping His covenant purposes intact and carrying forward the line through which the promised Savior would come. Lev 26:44 Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land… See, I have refined you, God had disciplined Israel through exile and suffering, separating them from idolatry and exposing the emptiness of their rebellion. His purpose was not their destruction but their restoration as a people set apart for His name. Zec 13:9 This third I will bring through the fire;… but not as silver; Their refinement was not the complete removal of all impurity, as in the smelting of silver, but a measured discipline suited to their weakness. God preserved a remnant rather than allowing judgment to consume the nation. Pro 17:3 A crucible for silver and a furnace for gold… I have tested you Israel’s trials revealed the condition of their hearts and demonstrated their dependence on the Lord. Their affliction exposed unbelief and rebellion while preparing the faithful to trust His promises. Deu 8:2 Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you… in the furnace of affliction. The furnace refers especially to the severe oppression and loss connected with captivity. Though the suffering was real, it remained under God’s control and served His purpose of preserving His people and bringing them back to their land. 1Ki 8:51 For they are Your people and Your inheritance;… For My own sake, My very own sake, I will act; God will preserve Israel despite its unfaithfulness because His covenant name and faithfulness are at stake. During the Babylonian exile, Israel’s restoration would demonstrate that the Lord had not been defeated by Babylon or abandoned His promises. Ezk 36:22-23 Therefore tell the house of Israel that this is… for how can I let Myself be defamed? If Israel remained under judgment without deliverance, the nations could conclude that Israel’s God lacked power or faithfulness. God’s actions reveal His holiness and uphold the honor of His name before the world. Ezk 20:14 But I acted for the sake of My name,… I will not yield My glory to another. The Lord alone is God, and no idol, empire, or false deity can claim credit for Israel’s deliverance. His glory belongs exclusively to Him, exposing the emptiness of Babylonian gods and every rival to His worship. Isa 42:8 I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory…
Deliverance Promised to IsraelGod addresses the descendants of Jacob as His covenant people. Jacob’s name, changed to Israel, recalls the patriarch from whom the twelve tribes descended. Their identity and calling rested on God’s sovereign choice, not on their strength or faithfulness. In the setting of coming exile and promised restoration, Israel was summoned to heed the God who had formed and preserved the nation. Isa 44:1 But now listen, O Jacob My servant, Israel… I am He; The Lord identifies Himself as the one true and living God. Unlike the idols of Babylon, He is not made, carried, or dependent upon human devotion. He remains constant in character, purpose, and power, and His word concerning Israel’s judgment and deliverance will stand. Isa 43:10 “You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD… I am the first, and I am the last. God existed before Israel, Babylon, and every earthly kingdom, and He will remain when they have passed away. He governs history from its beginning to its end, directing nations and fulfilling His purposes. Israel’s future was secure because it rested in the eternal God rather than in changing political powers. Isa 44:6 Thus says the LORD, the King and Redeemer of Israel… Surely My own hand founded the earth, God declares Himself the direct and sovereign Creator of the earth. Its existence rests on His purposeful act, not on chance or human power. Isa 45:12 It is I who made the earth and created man… and My right hand spread out the heavens; The heavens, with their vast order and beauty, were fashioned by God’s strength and wisdom. His rule extends from the earth to every part of the created universe. Isa 44:24 Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer who formed you… when I summon them, they stand up together. Creation remains subject to God’s command. The earth and heavens respond as one to His will, showing that the Creator continues to govern all He has made. Isa 40:26 Lift up your eyes on high: Who created all these?… Come together, all of you, and listen: Israel is summoned to hear the Lord’s declaration concerning the nations and His purpose for His people. The call demands attention because God is about to identify the One who alone directs history. Isa 45:20 Come, gather together, and draw near, you fugitives… Which of the idols has foretold these things? No idol had announced Babylon’s fall or named the ruler who would bring it about. The gods of Babylon could neither reveal the future nor prevent the judgment God had decreed. Isa 44:7-8 Who then is like Me? Let him say so! Let him declare his case… The LORD’s chosen ally will carry out His desire against Babylon, God’s chosen instrument was Cyrus, the Persian king who conquered Babylon in 539 BC. Though Cyrus did not belong to Israel, the Lord appointed him to overthrow Babylon and permit the Jewish exiles to return to their land. Isa 45:1-4 This is what the LORD says to Cyrus His anointed,… and His arm will be against the Chaldeans. God’s power would fall upon Babylon and its ruling Chaldean people. Their empire, which had destroyed Jerusalem and carried Judah into exile, would be brought down according to the Lord’s purpose. Jer 50:25 The LORD has opened His armory and brought out His weapons…… I, even I, have spoken; God alone has declared what will happen, and His word carries absolute authority. He directs the course of nations and brings His purposes to pass. Ezk 36:36 Then the nations around you that remain will know… yes, I have called him. Cyrus was appointed by God to overthrow Babylon and permit the Jewish exiles to return and rebuild Jerusalem. Isa 45:4 For the sake of Jacob My servant and Israel My chosen one… I have brought him, God raised Cyrus to power and guided his advance, using a foreign ruler to accomplish His purpose for Israel. Isa 45:1 This is what the LORD says to Cyrus His anointed,… and he will succeed in his mission. Cyrus’s campaign would prosper because God had determined its outcome. His success included Babylon’s fall and the restoration of the Jews to their land. Isa 44:28 who says of Cyrus, ‘My shepherd will fulfill…… Come near to Me and listen to this: God summons His people to hear His public declaration and recognize His authority over their history. Deu 5:27 Go near and listen to all that the LORD our God says.… From the beginning I have not spoken in secret; Unlike the hidden claims of false gods, the Lord’s purposes have been openly proclaimed through His servants. Isa 45:19 I have not spoken in secret, from a place in a land… from the time it happened, I was there.” He was present in every event He foretold and brought to pass, directing history according to His sovereign plan. Pro 8:27-30 I was there when He established the heavens,… And now the Lord GOD has sent me, The speaker is sent by the Lord GOD with a divine commission, pointing beyond Isaiah to the promised Servant who would carry out the Father’s purpose. Jhn 20:21 Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me,”… accompanied by His Spirit. The Spirit’s presence confirms the divine source and power of this mission, revealing the united work of the Lord, His sent One, and His Spirit. Luk 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me.… Thus says the LORD your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel: The LORD speaks as Israel’s covenant God, the One who delivered them from bondage and remains committed to their preservation. As Redeemer, He acts on behalf of His people; as the Holy One of Israel, He stands uniquely righteous and faithful to His covenant. Isa 43:14 For your sake, I will send to Babylon… “I am the LORD your God, Israel belongs to Him by covenant, and He alone possesses the authority to command, correct, and lead them. Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out… who teaches you for your benefit, His instruction is given for their good, guarding them from the consequences of idolatry, injustice, and rebellion. Isa 30:20 The Lord will give you the bread of adversity… who directs you in the way you should go. The LORD provides the true path for His people, leading them in obedience, righteousness, and life under His rule. Psa 32:8 I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go;… If only you had paid attention to My commandments, God laments Israel’s refusal to pay deep, attentive heed to the covenant He gave through Moses. Their persistent rebellion brought the judgment and exile Isaiah had warned of, though obedience would have led to covenant blessing. Deu 5:29 If only they had such a heart to fear Me… your peace would have been like a river, Israel could have enjoyed enduring security, prosperity, and wholeness instead of the distress caused by sin and judgment. Like a river that continually supplies life to the land, God’s peace would have sustained the nation. Isa 66:12 For this is what the LORD says: “I will extend peace to her… and your righteousness like waves of the sea. Their faithful conduct would have been abundant and unceasing, like the constant movement of the sea. Rather than a brief outward conformity, God desired a people whose lives consistently reflected His holy standards. Amo 5:24 But let justice roll on like a river,… Your descendants would have been as countless as the sand, Israel’s disobedience had brought loss and coming judgment, though God had intended national flourishing, security, and a vast population under His blessing. Gen 22:17 I will surely bless you, and I will multiply… and your offspring as numerous as its grains; The picture of innumerable grains stresses the abundance Israel might have enjoyed as a faithful covenant people, extending their influence through many generations. Heb 11:12 And so from one man, and he as good as dead,… their name would never be cut off or eliminated from My presence.” Their identity as God’s people would have remained secure in the land and before Him rather than being marked by exile, loss, and discipline. Isa 66:22 For just as the new heavens and the new earth,… Leave Babylon! As Babylon faced judgment, the Jewish exiles were commanded to depart rather than remain among a people marked by idolatry and opposition to the Lord. Their return would recall the exodus from Egypt, when God brought His people out of bondage. Jer 50:8 Flee from the midst of Babylon; depart from the land… Flee from the Chaldeans! The Chaldeans, Babylon’s ruling people, would soon lose their power to the Medes and Persians. God’s people were to make a decisive break from the land of their captivity and prepare for restoration. Zec 2:7 Get up, O Zion! Escape, you who dwell with the Daughter… Declare it with a shout of joy, Their release was to be received as a public victory of the Lord, not merely a political change. Psa 98:4 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth;… proclaim it, Israel was to testify that her restoration came from God’s faithfulness to His covenant. Psa 96:2 Sing to the LORD, bless His name; proclaim His salvation… let it go out to the ends of the earth, The fall of Babylon and the return of Jacob would display the Lord’s sovereignty before the nations. Isa 49:6 “It is not enough for You to be My Servant,”… saying, “The LORD has redeemed His servant Jacob!” The Lord redeemed Israel from Babylonian captivity despite the nation’s sin, preserving the people through whom He would fulfill His promises and ultimately bring redemption through Christ. Isa 44:21-23 Remember these things, O Jacob, for you are My servant,… They did not thirst when He led them through the deserts; After leaving Egypt, Israel traveled through arid wilderness where water was scarce. God sustained them throughout the journey, demonstrating His faithful care and guiding them as their covenant Lord. Neh 9:15 In their hunger You gave them bread from heaven;… He made water flow for them from the rock; At Horeb and later at Kadesh, God provided water in circumstances where no natural source could meet the people’s need. Their survival depended on His intervention rather than their own resources. Exo 17:6 Behold, I will stand there before you by the rock at Horeb.… He split the rock, and water gushed out. The abundant water showed God’s power to provide in the wilderness and recalled His patience toward Israel despite their repeated complaints and unbelief. Psa 78:15-16 He split the rocks in the wilderness and gave them drink… “There is no peace,” Peace with God is absent where rebellion against Him remains. Israel’s history showed that idolatry, injustice, and refusal to heed God’s commands brought unrest rather than security. Isa 57:20-21 But the wicked are like the storm-tossed sea,… says the LORD, God Himself declares the certainty of this judgment. His word stands above human opinion and confirms that the condition of the wicked cannot produce lasting well-being. Isa 40:5 And the glory of the LORD will be revealed… “for the wicked.” The wicked are those who persist in opposing God’s rule. Though they may appear secure for a time, their sin separates them from the wholeness, order, and blessing that come from living under God’s authority. Psa 37:37-38 Consider the blameless and observe the upright… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
