Job 24

Job: Judgment for the Wicked

1  מַדּ֗וּעַ (Why) מִ֭שַּׁדַּי (from Shaddai) לֹא־ (not) נִצְפְּנ֣וּ (are hidden away) עִתִּ֑ים (the times),

וְיֹדְעוֹ (and those knowing Him) לֹא־ (not) חָ֥זוּ (they have seen) יָמָֽיו׃ (His days)?

2  גְּבֻל֥וֹת (Boundary markers) יַשִּׂ֑יגוּ (they move),

עֵ֥דֶר (a flock) גָּ֝זְל֗וּ (they seize) וַיִּרְעֽוּ׃ (and pasture it).

3  חֲמ֣וֹר (The donkey) יְתוֹמִ֣ים (of the fatherless) יִנְהָ֑גוּ (they drive away);

יַ֝חְבְּל֗וּ (they take as a pledge) שׁ֣וֹר (the ox) אַלְמָנָֽה׃ (of the widow).

4  יַטּ֣וּ (They push) אֶבְיוֹנִ֣ים (the needy) מִדָּ֑רֶךְ (off the road);

יַ֥חַד (together) חֻ֝בְּא֗וּ (are hidden) עֲנִיֵּי־ (the poor) אָֽרֶץ׃ (of the land).

5  הֵ֤ן (Behold), פְּרָאִ֨ים׀ (wild donkeys) בַּֽמִּדְבָּ֗ר (in the desert),

יָצְא֣וּ (they go forth) בְּ֭פָעֳלָם (in their work of) מְשַׁחֲרֵ֣י (searching) לַטָּ֑רֶף (for food);

עֲרָבָ֥ה (the Arabah) ל֥וֹ (gives for them) לֶ֝֗חֶם (food)— לַנְּעָרִֽים׃ (and for the young).

6  בַּ֭שָּׂדֶה (In the field) בְּלִיל֣וֹ (his fodder) יַקְצִירוּ (they gather),

וְכֶ֖רֶם (and in the vineyard) רָשָׁ֣ע (of the wicked) יְלַקֵּֽשׁוּ׃ (they glean).

7  עָר֣וֹם (Naked) יָ֭לִינוּ (they spend the night) מִבְּלִ֣י (without) לְב֑וּשׁ (a garment),

וְאֵ֥ין (and with no) כְּ֝ס֗וּת (covering) בַּקָּרָֽה׃ (in the cold).

8  מִזֶּ֣רֶם (From the showers) הָרִ֣ים (of the mountains) יִרְטָ֑בוּ (they are wet),

וּֽמִבְּלִ֥י (and from being without) מַ֝חְסֶ֗ה (shelter) חִבְּקוּ־ (they have embraced) צֽוּר׃ (the rock).

9  יִ֭גְזְלוּ (They snatch) מִשֹּׁ֣ד (from the breast) יָת֑וֹם (the fatherless),

וְֽעַל־ (and the suckling) עָנִ֥י (of the poor) יַחְבֹּֽלוּ׃ (they bind with a pledge).

10  עָר֣וֹם (Naked) הִ֭לְּכוּ (They go about), בְּלִ֣י (without) לְב֑וּשׁ (clothing),

וּ֝רְעֵבִ֗ים (and hungry) נָ֣שְׂאוּ (they carry) עֹֽמֶר׃ (a sheaf).

11  בֵּין־ (Between) שׁוּרֹתָ֥ם (their walls) יַצְהִ֑ירוּ (they press oil);

יְקָבִ֥ים (the winepresses) דָּ֝רְכ֗וּ (they tread), וַיִּצְמָֽאוּ׃ (and go thirsty).

12  מֵ֘עִ֤יר (From the city) מְתִ֨ים׀ (men) יִנְאָ֗קוּ (groan),

וְנֶֽפֶשׁ־ (and the souls) חֲלָלִ֥ים (of the wounded) תְּשַׁוֵּ֑עַ (cry out);

וֶ֝אֱל֗וֹהַּ (and God) לֹא־ (not) יָשִׂ֥ים (does ascribe) תִּפְלָֽה׃ (impropriety).

13  הֵ֤מָּה׀ (They) הָיוּ֮ (are) בְּֽמֹרְדֵ֫י־ (among those rebelling) א֥וֹר (against the light);

לֹֽא־ (not) הִכִּ֥ירוּ (do they recognize) דְרָכָ֑יו (its ways), וְלֹ֥א (and not) יָ֝שְׁב֗וּ (do they dwell) בִּנְתִיבֹתָֽיו׃ (in its paths).

14  לָא֡וֹר (At light) יָ֘ק֤וּם (arises) רוֹצֵ֗חַ (the murderer);

יִֽקְטָל־ (he kills) עָנִ֥י (the poor) וְאֶבְי֑וֹן (and needy),

וּ֝בַלַּ֗יְלָה (and in the night) יְהִ֣י (he is) כַגַּנָּֽב׃ (like a thief).

15  וְעֵ֤ין (And the eye) נֹאֵ֨ף׀ (of the adulterer) שָׁ֤מְרָֽה (watches) נֶ֣שֶׁף (for twilight),

לֵ֭אמֹר (saying), לֹא־ (Not) תְשׁוּרֵ֣נִי (will see me) עָ֑יִן (an eye), וְסֵ֖תֶר (and a cover) פָּנִ֣ים (over his face) יָשִֽׂים׃ (he puts).

16  חָתַ֥ר (One digs) בַּחֹ֗שֶׁךְ (in the darkness) בָּ֫תִּ֥ים (into houses),

יוֹמָ֥ם (by day) חִתְּמוּ־ (they seal in) לָ֗מוֹ (themselves);

לֹא־ (not) יָ֥דְעוּ (they do know) אֽוֹר׃ (the light).

17  כִּ֤י (For) יַחְדָּ֨ו׀ (as one) בֹּ֣קֶר (is the morning) לָ֣מוֹ (for them) צַלְמָ֑וֶת (the shadow of death),

כִּֽי־ (for) יַ֝כִּ֗יר (one regards) בַּלְה֥וֹת (the terrors) צַלְמָֽוֶת׃ (of the shadow of death).

18  קַֽל־ (Swift) ה֤וּא׀ (he is) עַל־ (on) פְּנֵי־ (the face) מַ֗יִם (of the waters);

תְּקֻלַּ֣ל (cursed) חֶלְקָתָ֣ם (is their portion) בָּאָ֑רֶץ (in the land).

לֹֽא־ (Not) יִ֝פְנֶה (does he turn) דֶּ֣רֶךְ (to the way) כְּרָמִֽים׃ (of the vineyards).

19  צִיָּ֤ה (As drought) גַם־ (and) חֹ֗ם (heat) יִגְזְל֥וּ (tear away) מֵֽימֵי־ (the waters) שֶׁ֗לֶג (of snow),

שְׁא֣וֹל (Sheol does) חָטָֽאוּ׃ (to those who have sinned).

20  יִשְׁכָּ֘חֵ֤הוּ (Forgets him) רֶ֨חֶם׀ (the womb);

מְתָ֘ק֤וֹ (feeds sweetly on him) רִמָּ֗ה (the worm);

ע֥וֹד (more) לֹֽא־ (no) יִזָּכֵ֑ר (is he remembered);

וַתִּשָּׁבֵ֖ר (and is broken) כָּעֵ֣ץ (like a tree) עַוְלָֽה׃ (injustice).

21  רֹעֶ֣ה (For he feeds on) עֲ֭קָרָה (the barren woman) לֹ֣א (who not) תֵלֵ֑ד (can give birth)

וְ֝אַלְמָנָ֗ה (and to the widow) לֹ֣א (not) יְיֵטִֽיב׃ (does he good).

22  וּמָשַׁ֣ךְ (And he draws away) אַבִּירִ֣ים (the mighty) בְּכֹח֑וֹ (with his power);

יָ֝ק֗וּם (he rises up), וְֽלֹא־ (and not) יַאֲמִ֥ין (is he sure) בַּֽחַיִּֽין׃ (of life).

23  יִתֶּן־ (He gives) ל֣וֹ (to him) לָ֭בֶטַח (security), וְיִשָּׁעֵ֑ן (and he is supported);

וְ֝עֵינֵ֗יהוּ (and his eyes are) עַל־ (on) דַּרְכֵיהֶֽם׃ (their ways).

24  ר֤וֹמּוּ (They are exalted) מְּעַ֨ט׀ (for a little while),

וְֽאֵינֶ֗נּוּ (and they are no more),

וְֽהֻמְּכ֗וּ (and they are brought low) כַּכֹּ֥ל (like all) יִקָּפְצ֑וּן (and are gathered up),

וּכְרֹ֖אשׁ (and like heads) שִׁבֹּ֣לֶת (of grain) יִמָּֽלוּ׃ (they wither).

25  וְאִם־ (And if) לֹ֣א (not) אֵ֭פוֹ (then), מִ֣י (who) יַכְזִיבֵ֑נִי (will prove me a liar),

וְיָשֵׂ֥ם (and set) לְ֝אַ֗ל (to nought) מִלָּתִֽי׃ס (my speech)?
