The Parable of the Lost Sheep

Now all the tax collectors and sinners

Tax collectors served Rome and were widely despised for their association with the occupying power and for abuses that often accompanied their work. “Sinners” included those known for open moral failure and those regarded as unclean or careless toward religious standards. Jesus received people whom many considered beyond acceptance.

Mat 9:10-13 Later, as Jesus was dining at Matthew’s house…
Mrk 2:15-17 While Jesus was dining at Levi’s house, many tax collectors…
Luk 5:30-32 But the Pharisees and their scribes complained…

were gathering around

They repeatedly came near Him, drawn by His teaching and His willingness to meet with them rather than avoid them.

Mat 13:2 Such large crowds gathered around Him that He got into a boat…
Mrk 4:1 Once again Jesus began to teach beside the sea…
Mrk 3:9 Jesus asked His disciples to have a boat ready for Him…

to listen to Jesus.

Jesus taught with authority, and these outcasts were willing to hear Him. Their response stands in contrast to the religious leaders who rejected Him despite their knowledge of the Law.

Mat 17:5 While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped…
Luk 10:39 She had a sister named Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet…
Jhn 10:27 My sheep listen to My voice; I know them…

So the Pharisees and scribes began to grumble:

The Pharisees and scribes were influential religious leaders who emphasized careful observance of the Law and inherited traditions. They objected to Jesus because His ministry challenged their assumptions about holiness, purity, and who could receive God’s mercy.

Luk 5:30 But the Pharisees and their scribes complained…
Mat 9:11 When the Pharisees saw this, they asked His disciples…
Mrk 2:16 When the scribes saw Jesus eating with these people…

“This man welcomes sinners

Those labeled sinners included people known for immoral lives, tax collectors, and others viewed as outside faithful Jewish society. Jesus did not approve of sin, but He received those who came to Him, calling them to repentance and offering forgiveness.

Luk 7:34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say…
Mat 11:19 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say…
Mrk 2:17 On hearing this, Jesus told them, “It is not the healthy…

and eats with them.”

Meals expressed fellowship and acceptance. By eating with sinners, Jesus showed that God’s kingdom welcomes repentant people rather than reserving mercy for the outwardly respectable.

Mat 9:10 Later, as Jesus was dining at Matthew’s house…
Mrk 2:15 While Jesus was dining at Levi’s house, many tax collectors…
Act 11:3 and said, “You visited uncircumcised men and ate with them.”

Then Jesus

Then Jesus continued addressing the tax collectors, sinners, Pharisees, and scribes gathered around Him. His teaching confronted the religious leaders’ complaint that He welcomed those they considered unworthy.

Mat 13:3 And He told them many things in parables,…
Mrk 4:2 And He taught them many things in parables,…
Luk 8:4 While a large crowd was gathering and people were coming…

told them

Jesus told them this parable to expose their failure to understand God’s concern for the lost and to explain why He welcomed sinners.

Mat 13:34 Jesus spoke all these things to the crowds in parables.…
Mrk 4:33 With many such parables Jesus spoke the word to them,…
Jhn 10:6 Jesus spoke to them using this illustration……

this parable:

This chapter introduces three connected parables: the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son. Each reveals God’s initiative in seeking the lost and the joy that follows genuine repentance.

Mat 18:12-14 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep…
Ezk 34:11-16 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I Myself…
1Pe 2:25 you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned…

“What man among you,

Jesus draws on a familiar rural scene to engage His listeners. Shepherding was common in Israel, and His audience understood the duties and risks involved in caring for a flock.

Mat 12:11 He replied, “If one of you has a sheep and it falls…
Mat 7:9 Which of you, if his son asks for bread,…

if he has a hundred sheep

A hundred sheep represented a substantial flock, likely requiring careful oversight and shared responsibility. Each animal mattered to the owner because it was part of his livelihood.

Ezk 34:11-12 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I Myself…
Jhn 10:14-16 I am the good shepherd. I know My sheep…

and loses one of them,

Sheep could easily stray from the flock and become exposed to danger. The lost sheep pictures a person separated from God and unable to return by his own efforts.

Isa 53:6 We all like sheep have gone astray, each one has turned…
1Pe 2:25 you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned…

does not leave the ninety-nine in the pasture

The ninety-nine remain in a place of provision and relative safety while the shepherd addresses the immediate danger facing the missing sheep. Their security does not lessen the value of the one that is gone.

Mat 18:12 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep…
Psa 23:1-2 A Psalm of David. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.…

and go after the one that is lost,

The shepherd takes deliberate action to recover what belongs to him. Jesus uses the image to show God’s concern for individual sinners and His purpose in seeking their restoration.

Ezk 34:16 I will seek the lost, bring back the strays…
Luk 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

until he finds it?

The search continues until the sheep is found, emphasizing the shepherd’s determination and the certainty of God’s saving purpose.

Mat 18:13-14 And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices…
Psa 119:176 I have strayed like a lost sheep; seek Your servant…

And when he finds it,

“And when he finds it” emphasizes the shepherd’s deliberate and successful search. The sheep is recovered because the shepherd finds it, portraying God’s initiative in seeking and saving sinners who cannot return to him by their own strength.

Mat 18:12-13 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep…
Ezk 34:11-12 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I Myself…
1Pe 2:25 you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned…

he joyfully puts it

The shepherd responds with joy rather than anger. He does not drive the recovered sheep back but personally receives it, reflecting heaven’s joy when a sinner repents.

Zep 3:17 The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save.…
Isa 62:5 For as a young man marries a young woman,…
Psa 126:5-6 Those who sow in tears will reap with shouts of joy.…

on his shoulders,

He carries the helpless animal home on His shoulders, protecting it from further danger. The image shows Christ’s personal care for those He saves and His determination to restore them safely to the flock.

Isa 49:22 This is what the Lord GOD says: “Behold,…
Isa 40:11 He tends His flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs…
Deu 1:31 and in the wilderness, where the LORD your God carried you…

comes home,

The shepherd’s return marks the successful rescue of the sheep that had wandered from the flock. Jesus portrays God’s care for those separated from Him and the certainty of restoration when the lost are found.

Psa 126:6 He who goes out weeping, bearing a trail of seed,…
Jer 31:10-12 Hear, O nations, the word of the LORD, and proclaim it…
Isa 40:11 He tends His flock like a shepherd; He gathers the lambs…

and calls together his friends and neighbors to tell them,

Shepherding was often carried out near villages and shared grazing areas, where neighbors would understand both the danger of losing an animal and the relief of recovering it. The gathering turns a personal recovery into a public celebration.

Act 10:24-27 The following day he arrived in Caesarea, where Cornelius…
Mrk 5:19-20 But Jesus would not allow him. “Go home to your own”…
Luk 8:39 Return home and describe how much God has done…

‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep!’

The recovered sheep represents a sinner brought back to God. Its rescue produces joy not only for the shepherd but also in heaven, where the repentance and restoration of one lost person are cause for celebration.

Mat 18:12-13 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep…
Ezk 34:16 I will seek the lost, bring back the strays…
Rom 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

I tell you that in the same way

Jesus applies the lesson of the lost sheep directly to those listening, especially the religious leaders who objected to His receiving sinners. He reveals heaven’s judgment of what they regarded as unworthy.

Mat 18:12-14 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep…
Ezk 34:11-16 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I Myself…
Luk 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

there will be more joy in heaven

God and the angels rejoice when His saving purpose is fulfilled. Heaven celebrates restoration, not merely outward religious standing.

Rev 19:1-7 After this I heard a sound like the roar…
Luk 2:13-14 And suddenly there appeared with the angel…

over one sinner who repents

Each person who turns from sin and comes to God is of great value to Him. Repentance involves acknowledging sin and returning to the Lord in faith and obedience.

Ezk 18:21-23 But if the wicked man turns from all the sins…
Ezk 33:11 Say to them: ‘As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD,…
2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping His promise…

than over ninety-nine righteous ones who do not need to repent.

The comparison exposes those who considered themselves righteous and saw no need for repentance. Jesus does not diminish righteousness; He rebukes self-righteousness that refuses to recognize its need for God’s mercy.

Mrk 2:17 On hearing this, Jesus told them, “It is not the healthy…

The Parable of the Lost Coin

Or what woman who has ten silver coins

The ten drachmas represented meaningful personal wealth, possibly part of a dowry or a married woman’s headdress. Each coin provided security within the household.

Mrk 12:42-44 Then one poor widow came and put in two small copper coins,…
Luk 19:13-24 Beforehand, he called ten of his servants…
Mat 25:1-13 At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins…

and loses one of them

Losing one coin meant losing a tenth of her savings, a serious loss rather than a minor inconvenience. Each person likewise has great value before God.

Mat 18:12-14 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep…
Ezk 34:16 I will seek the lost, bring back the strays…
Luk 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”

does not light a lamp,

Homes were often dark, with few small windows, making a lamp necessary for a careful search. The light reveals what is hidden.

Luk 11:33 No one lights a lamp and puts it in a cellar…
Mat 5:15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket.…
Mrk 4:21 Jesus also said to them, “Does anyone bring in a lamp……

Packed-earth floors could easily conceal a coin beneath dust or debris, so sweeping exposed what could not be found by a casual glance.

Mat 12:44-45 Then it says, ‘I will return to the house I left.’…
Isa 14:23 I will make her a place for owls and for swamplands;…

Her determined search shows the importance of recovering what was lost and prepares for the joy of restoration when a sinner repents.

Jer 29:13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me…

And when she finds it,

When she finds the coin, the woman rejoices because what was lost has been recovered. The coin represents a sinner who, though separated from God, is sought by Him and restored through repentance.

Pro 2:4-5 if you seek it like silver and search it out…

she calls together her friends and neighbors

Her joy overflows into the community. In a close-knit village setting, neighbors shared both daily burdens and celebrations, making the recovery of something valuable an occasion for public rejoicing.

Php 2:18 So you too should be glad and rejoice with me.
Rom 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice; weep with those who weep.

for I have found my lost coin.’

Though small, the coin had real value, likely equal to a day’s wage. Its recovery shows that no person is insignificant to God. Jesus came to seek and save the lost, and repentance brings restoration and rejoicing.

2Ki 22:8 Then Hilkiah the high priest said to Shaphan the scribe,…

In the same way,

Jesus continues the theme of the lost sheep and lost coin, showing that heaven’s response to repentance is marked by celebration.

The Parable of the Prodigal Son

Then Jesus said,

Having reached the depths of poverty and shame, the younger son resolves to leave the far country and return home. His decision marks a genuine turning from rebellion toward the father he had dishonored. The father’s house, once rejected, is now recognized as the place of provision and safety.

against heaven and against you.

His sin was against God as well as against his earthly father. The inheritance he wasted and the disgrace he brought upon the family were not merely personal failures; they were acts of rebellion against God’s order. His confession recognizes the full seriousness of his wrongdoing and prepares the way for reconciliation.

Jos 7:20 “It is true,” Achan replied, “I have sinned…

Gen 32:10 I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness…

He expects no restoration to his former position and asks only for a place among the laborers who worked for wages. His planned plea reveals humility, yet the father’s response will exceed the mercy he hopes to receive.

So he got up and went to his father.

Having come to his senses, the younger son acted on his resolve to return home and confess his sin. His journey began with repentance: he abandoned the far country and turned back to the father he had dishonored.

But while he was still in the distance, his father saw him and was filled with compassion.

The father had not forgotten his son. Seeing him before he reached the house, he responded with mercy rather than the judgment the son expected. His compassion reveals the father’s readiness to receive one who returns in humility.

2Sa 12:13 Then David said to Nathan, “I have sinned…”…
1Sa 15:24 Then Saul said to Samuel, “I have sinned;…

Aware of the shame his conduct had brought upon the household, he admitted that he had forfeited any claim to favorable treatment. His humility prepared the way for the father’s unexpected mercy and full restoration.

Mat 8:8 The centurion answered, “Lord, I am not worthy…
Luk 7:7 That is why I did not consider myself worthy to come to You.…
Jhn 1:27 He is the One who comes after me, the straps…

But the father said to his servants,

The father acts at once, directing the household to receive his returning son. His command shows that the son’s restoration is not provisional or dependent on further testing.

Mat 24:45 Who then is the faithful and wise servant,…
Jhn 2:5 His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever He tells you.”

‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him.

The finest robe publicly restores the son’s honor within the household. Though he had returned expecting only a servant’s place, his father receives him as a son.

Zec 3:4 So the angel said to those standing before him…
Isa 61:10 I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will exult…
1Sa 18:4 And Jonathan removed the robe he was wearing…

Put a ring on his finger

The ring marks family membership and restored standing. It indicates that the father again recognizes him as a full heir of the household.

Gen 41:42 Then Pharaoh removed the signet ring from his finger,…
Est 8:2 The king removed the signet ring he had recovered from Haman…
Jer 22:24 “As surely as I live,” declares the LORD,…

and sandals on his feet.

Servants commonly went barefoot, while sandals belonged to free members of the family. The father removes every outward sign of the son’s former misery and restores him to his proper place.

Ezk 16:10 I clothed you in embroidered cloth and gave you sandals…
Exo 12:11 This is how you are to eat it: You must be fully dressed…
Deu 29:5 For forty years I led you in the wilderness…

Bring the fattened calf and kill it.

The fattened calf was kept for an occasion of unusual importance, making the father’s command a costly and public expression of joy. He receives his returning son not as a servant but as a restored member of the household. The sacrifice and meal reflect the father’s delight in the son’s repentance and foreshadow the provision of redemption through Christ.

1Sa 28:24 The woman had a fattened calf at her house,…
Gen 18:7-8 Meanwhile, Abraham ran to the herd, selected a tender and…
1Ki 1:9 And Adonijah sacrificed sheep, oxen, and fattened calves…

Let us feast and celebrate.

The restoration of the son calls for a household celebration shared with others. His return ends the separation caused by his rebellion and marks his renewed place in the family. The father’s joy reflects the rejoicing in heaven when a sinner repents and is restored to God.

Neh 8:10 Then Nehemiah told them, “Go and eat what is rich,…
Est 9:22 as the days on which the Jews gained rest from their enemies…
Isa 25:6 On this mountain the LORD of Hosts will prepare a banquet…

For this son of mine was dead and is alive again!

The father describes the son’s life of rebellion as death—a separation from the life and fellowship of his family. His return in repentance brings restoration, as though he has been given life again. The father receives him not as a servant but as a son restored to his household.

Eph 2:1-5 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,…
Col 2:13 When you were dead in your trespasses, God made you alive…
Rom 6:11 So you too must count yourselves dead to sin,…

He was lost and is found!’

Having left his father’s home, the younger son had abandoned both his place in the family and the security of his inheritance. His return ends that estrangement. The father’s words express the purpose of Jesus’ ministry: sinners who have wandered from God may be restored through repentance and forgiveness.

Luk 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
Mat 18:12-14 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep…
1Pe 2:25 you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned…

So they began to celebrate.

The father orders a public feast to mark his son’s return. In a culture where family standing and communal relationships mattered deeply, the celebration declares that the son has been fully received back. The rejoicing reflects the joy over a repentant sinner brought from separation into fellowship.

Est 9:22 as the days on which the Jews gained rest from their enemies…
Psa 30:11 You turned my mourning into dancing; You peeled off…
Isa 61:10 I will rejoice greatly in the LORD, my soul will exult…

Meanwhile the older son was in the field,

The older son pictures the Pharisees and religious leaders who objected to Jesus receiving sinners. His work in the field reflects outward faithfulness, duty, and confidence in his own obedience, yet he remained distant from the father’s joy.

Gen 25:27-28 When the boys grew up, Esau became a skillful hunter…
Gen 27:5-7 Now Rebekah was listening to what Isaac told his son Esau.…
Gen 4:8 Then Cain said to his brother Abel, “Let us go out…

and as he approached the house,

The house is the father’s home, where fellowship and restoration are found. As the older son draws near, he faces the same invitation extended to his brother: to enter and share in the father’s mercy.

Gen 24:31-33 “Come, you who are blessed by the LORD,” said Laban.…
Luk 10:38-39 As they traveled along, Jesus entered a village…
Act 10:27 As Peter talked with him, he went inside…

he heard music and dancing.

The celebration marks the father’s joy over the return of his lost son. The sounds of rejoicing expose the older son’s resentment, revealing that he valued service without sharing his father’s compassion for the repentant.

1Sa 18:6-7 As the troops were returning home after David had killed…
Jdg 11:34 And when Jephthah returned home to Mizpah, his daughter…
Psa 150:3-4 Praise Him with the sound of the horn;…

So he called one of the servants

Approaching the house, the older son heard the celebration but remained outside. He called a household servant for an explanation, expecting him to know the reason for the music and dancing.

2Ki 6:11 For this reason the king of Aram became enraged…
Luk 19:15 When he returned from procuring his kingship, …
Mat 22:3 He sent his servants to call those he had invited…

and asked what was going on.

His question reveals that he had not yet learned of his brother’s return or his father’s joyful reception of him. The servant’s answer would expose the older son’s resentment and his failure to share in the restoration of his lost brother.

Act 2:12 Astounded and perplexed, they asked one another…
2Ki 4:26 Please run out now to meet her and ask, ‘Are you all right?…
Est 6:3 The king inquired, “What honor or dignity”…

‘Your brother has returned,’ he said,

The servant tells the older son that his younger brother has come home after leaving the family and wasting his inheritance. His return marks the end of his rebellion and the beginning of his restoration to the household.

Phm 1:15-16 For perhaps this is why he was separated from you…
Gen 33:4 Esau, however, ran to him and embraced him…
Jas 5:19-20 My brothers, if one of you should wander…

‘and your father has killed the fattened calf,

The father orders the animal reserved for an important feast to be prepared. Such a meal was a costly public expression of joy, showing that he receives his returning son fully rather than treating him as a servant.

1Sa 28:24 The woman had a fattened calf at her house,…
Pro 15:17 Better a dish of vegetables where there is love…
Mat 22:4 Again, he sent other servants and said, ‘Tell those who…

because he has him back safe and sound.’

The father rejoices because his son has returned alive and restored to the family. The news also reveals the contrast that will follow: the father welcomes the repentant son with mercy, while the older son struggles to share in that joy.

Gen 45:27-28 However, when they relayed all that Joseph had told them,…
Gen 46:30 Then Israel said to Joseph, “Finally I can die,…
Heb 11:19 Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead…

The older son became angry

The older son reflects the Pharisees and religious leaders who objected to Jesus receiving sinners. Though outwardly obedient, he resented the mercy shown to his brother and viewed his father’s generosity as unfair. His anger exposed a self-righteous heart that valued personal merit above repentance and restoration.

Jon 4:1-4 Jonah, however, was greatly displeased, and he became angry.…
Mat 20:11-12 On receiving their pay, they began to grumble…
Mat 21:15-16 But the chief priests and scribes were indignant…

and refused to go in.

By remaining outside, he rejected fellowship with his restored brother and refused to share in his father’s joy. His conduct revealed that physical proximity to the father’s house did not guarantee love for the father’s purposes. Like those who resisted Jesus’ ministry to sinners, he separated himself from the celebration of God’s mercy.

Mat 22:3-5 He sent his servants to call those he had invited…
Jhn 5:40 yet you refuse to come to Me to have life.
Mat 23:13 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites!…

So his father came out

The father sought the older son just as he had received the younger one. He did not abandon the son who was lost in resentment and pride, but left the feast to call him back into fellowship. The father’s action shows his concern for both sons and his desire that neither remain separated from him.

Mat 20:13-15 But he answered one of them, ‘Friend, I am not being unfair…
Ezk 34:11-16 For this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Behold, I Myself…
Mat 18:12-14 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep…

and pleaded with him.

Rather than rebuking him harshly, the father appealed to him with patience and affection. He invited the older son to recognize the restoration of his brother and to join in the joy of the household.

Phm 1:8-10 So although in Christ I am bold enough to order you…
2Co 5:20 Therefore we are ambassadors for Christ…
Exo 32:11-14 But Moses sought the favor of the LORD his God, saying,…

But he answered his father,

The elder son speaks from resentment rather than sharing his father’s joy over his brother’s return.

Mat 21:28-31 But what do you think? There was a man who had two sons.…
Deu 21:18-21 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son…

‘Look, all these years I have served you

He views his place in the household mainly through duty and labor, measuring his relationship with his father by what he believes he has earned.

Php 2:22 But you know Timothy’s proven worth, that as a child…
Mal 3:14 You have said, ‘It is futile to serve God.…

and never disobeyed a commandment of yours.

His claim exposes confidence in his own obedience while overlooking the hardness of heart revealed by his refusal to welcome his repentant brother.

Act 26:19 So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient…
Jhn 8:29 He who sent Me is with Me. He has not left Me alone,…
1Sa 15:22 But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in…

Yet you never gave me even a young goat

He feels overlooked and compares his father’s generosity toward the younger son with what he believes he has received.

Gen 27:9 Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,…
Jdg 6:19 So Gideon went in and prepared a young goat…
Jdg 15:1 Later on, at the time of the wheat harvest,…

so I could celebrate with my friends.

He desires recognition and celebration for himself, but remains outside the feast because he does not share his father’s mercy toward the lost son.

Luk 12:19 Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things…
Ecc 9:7 Go, eat your bread with joy, and drink your wine…
Est 9:22 as the days on which the Jews gained rest from their enemies…

But when this son of yours returns

The elder brother refuses to call him “my brother,” exposing his bitterness and resentment. The younger son’s departure and disgrace had brought dishonor upon the family, yet the father received him with compassion.

Jer 31:18-19 I have surely heard Ephraim’s moaning: ‘You disciplined me…
Hos 14:1-2 Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God for you have stumbled…
Ezk 18:27-28 But if a wicked man turns from the wickedness…

from squandering your wealth

The inheritance had been wasted through reckless living, rejecting both his father’s provision and the responsibilities that came with it.

Luk 16:1-2 Jesus also said to His disciples, “There was a rich man…
Pro 21:20 Precious treasures and oil are in the dwelling of the wise,…

with prostitutes,

The elder brother emphasizes the seriousness of his brother’s sin, whether from known facts or assumed details of his immoral life. The younger son had fallen deeply into rebellion before returning in repentance.

Pro 29:3 A man who loves wisdom brings joy to his father,…
Pro 6:26 For the levy of the prostitute is poverty.…

you kill the fattened calf for him!’

The father’s feast publicly marked the restoration of his son to the household. The elder brother sees only undeserved favor, while the father rejoices that one who was lost has returned.

1Sa 28:24 The woman had a fattened calf at her house,…
Mat 22:4 Again, he sent other servants and said, ‘Tell those who…

‘Son, you are always with me,’

The father addresses the older son tenderly, affirming his place in the household despite his resentment. His continued presence shows that he has remained under his father’s care and has shared in the security and privileges of the family.

Mat 28:20 and teaching them to obey all that I have commanded…
Jhn 16:32 Look, an hour is coming and has already come……
Heb 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content…

the father said,

The father responds without anger, seeking to correct his son’s bitterness and restore him to fellowship. As the central figure in the parable, he displays God’s mercy toward both the openly rebellious and the self-righteous.

Mat 3:17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved…
2Sa 7:14 I will be his Father, and he will be My son.…
Heb 1:5 For to which of the angels did God ever say:…

‘and all that is mine is yours.

Since the younger son had already received and squandered his portion, the estate remaining belonged to the older son. The father reminds him that he has not been deprived; his inheritance, responsibilities, and standing in the household remain secure.

Jhn 17:10 All I have is Yours, and all You have is Mine;…
Jhn 16:15 Everything that belongs to the Father is Mine.…
Rom 8:17 And if we are children, then we are heirs: heirs of God…

But it was fitting to celebrate and be glad,

The father’s joyful welcome was the proper response to his son’s return. Rather than treating the son according to his past rebellion, he received him as a restored member of the household. The celebration also answers the older brother’s resentment: mercy toward the repentant does not diminish righteousness but fulfills the father’s love.

Est 8:16-17 For the Jews it was a time of light and gladness,…
Psa 118:24 This is the day that the LORD has made; we will rejoice…
Zep 3:17 The LORD your God is among you; He is mighty to save.…

because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again;

The younger son had been separated from his father’s home and life through sin and rebellion. His return marked a true restoration of fellowship, as though one thought dead had been restored to life. By calling him “this brother of yours,” the father reminded the older son that the returned man remained part of the family.

Eph 2:1-5 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins,…
Col 2:13 When you were dead in your trespasses, God made you alive…
Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…

he was lost and is found.’”

The son had abandoned his father and squandered his inheritance in a distant land, but he was not beyond recovery. His return brought reconciliation and restored relationship. The father’s words summarize the central message of the parable: God receives sinners who turn from their sin and come to Him.

Ezk 34:16 I will seek the lost, bring back the strays…
Mat 18:12-14 What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep…
1Pe 2:25 you were like sheep going astray, but now you have returned…
