A Prophecy against Babylon

1  הַדָּבָ֗ר (The word) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) דִּבֶּ֧ר (spoke) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) אֶל־ (concerning) בָּבֶ֖ל (Babylon) אֶל־ (and concerning) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) כַּשְׂדִּ֑ים (of the Chaldeans) בְּיַ֖ד (by the hand) יִרְמְיָ֥הוּ (of Jeremiah) הַנָּבִֽיא׃ (the prophet).

2  הַגִּ֨ידוּ (Declare it) בַגּוֹיִ֤ם (among the nations), וְהַשְׁמִ֙יעוּ֙ (and make it heard),

וּֽשְׂאוּ־ (and lift up) נֵ֔ס (a signal); הַשְׁמִ֖יעוּ (make it heard),

אַל־ (and do not); תְּכַחֵ֑דוּ (hide it) אִמְרוּ֩ (Say),

נִלְכְּדָ֨ה (Is taken), בָבֶ֜ל (Babylon)

הֹבִ֥ישׁ (is put to shame), בֵּל֙ (Bel)

חַ֣ת (is dismayed). מְרֹדָ֔ךְ (Merodach)

הֹבִ֣ישׁוּ (are put to shame), עֲצַבֶּ֔יהָ (her idols)

חַ֖תּוּ (are dismayed) גִּלּוּלֶֽיהָ׃ (her images).

3  כִּ֣י (For) עָלָה֩ (has come up) עָלֶ֨יהָ (against her) גּ֜וֹי (a nation) מִצָּפ֗וֹן (from the north)

הֽוּא־ (and it) יָשִׁ֤ית (will set) אֶת־ (-) אַרְצָהּ֙ (her land) לְשַׁמָּ֔ה (as a desolation),

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יִהְיֶ֥ה (there will be) יוֹשֵׁ֖ב (one dwelling) בָּ֑הּ (in her)

מֵאָדָ֥ם (from man) וְעַד־ (even to) בְּהֵמָ֖ה (beast). נָ֥דוּ (They will wander off), הָלָֽכוּ׃ (they will depart),

Hope for Israel and Judah

4  בַּיָּמִ֨ים (In the days), הָהֵ֜מָּה (those) וּבָעֵ֤ת (and in the time), הַהִיא֙ (that)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH)

יָבֹ֧אוּ (Will come), בְנֵֽי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל (of Israel)

הֵ֥מָּה (they) וּבְנֵֽי־ (and the sons) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) יַחְדָּ֑ו (together),

הָל֤וֹךְ (going on) וּבָכוֹ֙ (and weeping); יֵלֵ֔כוּ (they will come),

וְאֶת־ (and) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) אֱלֹהֵיהֶ֖ם (their God) יְבַקֵּֽשׁוּ׃ (they will seek).

5  צִיּ֣וֹן (To Zion) יִשְׁאָ֔לוּ (they will ask) דֶּ֖רֶךְ (the way)

הֵ֣נָּה (toward it), פְנֵיהֶ֑ם (with their faces)

בֹּ֚אוּ (Come), וְנִלְו֣וּ (and let us join ourselves) אֶל־ (to) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH)

בְּרִ֥ית (in a covenant) עוֹלָ֖ם (forever)

לֹ֥א (not) תִשָּׁכֵֽחַ׃ס (that will be forgotten).

6  צֹ֤אן (Sheep); אֹֽבְדוֹת֙ (that are lost) הָיָה (have been) עַמִּ֔י (My people)

רֹעֵיהֶ֣ם (their shepherds) הִתְע֔וּם (have led them astray),

הָרִ֖ים (in the mountains); שׁוֹבֵבִים (they have turned them away)

מֵהַ֤ר (from mountain) אֶל־ (to) גִּבְעָה֙ (hill), הָלָ֔כוּ (they have gone)

שָׁכְח֖וּ (they have forgotten) רִבְצָֽם׃ (their resting place).

7  כָּל־ (All) מוֹצְאֵיהֶ֣ם (those finding them) אֲכָל֔וּם (have devoured them)

וְצָרֵיהֶ֥ם (and their adversaries) אָמְר֖וּ (have said),

לֹ֣א (Not), נֶאְשָׁ֑ם (are we guilty)

תַּ֗חַת (upon) אֲשֶׁ֨ר (that) חָטְא֤וּ (they have sinned) לַֽיהוָה֙ (against YHWH),

נְוֵה־ (the habitation) צֶ֔דֶק (of righteousness),

וּמִקְוֵ֥ה (and the hope) אֲבֽוֹתֵיהֶ֖ם (of their fathers). יְהוָֽה׃ס (YHWH),

8  נֻ֚דוּ (Wander off) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (from the midst) בָּבֶ֔ל (of Babylon),

וּמֵאֶ֥רֶץ (and from the land) כַּשְׂדִּ֖ים (of the Chaldeans),

יָצְאוּ (go forth) וִהְי֕וּ (and become) כְּעַתּוּדִ֖ים (like rams) לִפְנֵי־ (before the faces) צֹֽאן׃ (of the flock).

9  כִּ֣י (For), הִנֵּ֣ה (behold), אָנֹכִ֡י (I) מֵעִיר֩ (am rousing) וּמַעֲלֶ֨ה (and making come up) עַל־ (against) בָּבֶ֜ל (Babylon)

קְהַל־ (an assembly) גּוֹיִ֤ם (of nations) גְּדֹלִים֙ (great) מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land); צָפ֔וֹן (of the north)

וְעָ֣רְכוּ (and they will array themselves) לָ֔הּ (against her)

מִשָּׁ֖ם (from there) תִּלָּכֵ֑ד (she will be captured);

חִצָּיו֙ (their arrows are) כְּגִבּ֣וֹר (like those of a warrior) מַשְׁכִּ֔יל (skilled)

לֹ֥א (not) יָשׁ֖וּב (will one return) רֵיקָֽם׃ (empty).

10  וְהָיְתָ֥ה (And will become) כַשְׂדִּ֖ים (Chaldea) לְשָׁלָ֑ל (as plunder)

כָּל־ (all) שֹׁלְלֶ֥יהָ (those plundering her); יִשְׂבָּ֖עוּ (will be satisfied),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).

Babylon’s Fall Is Certain

11  כִּ֤י (Though) תִשְׂמְחִי (you⁺ are glad),

כִּ֣י (though) תַעֲלְזִי (you⁺ rejoice),

שֹׁסֵ֖י (O spoilers) נַחֲלָתִ֑י (of My heritage),

כִּ֤י (though) תָפוּשִׁי (you⁺ leap) כְּעֶגְלָ֣ה (like a heifer) דָשָׁ֔ה (treading),

וְתִצְהֲלִי (and bellow) כָּאֲבִּרִֽים׃ (like mighty ones);

12  בּ֤וֹשָׁה (will be shamed); אִמְּכֶם֙ (your⁺ mother) מְאֹ֔ד (deeply)

חָפְרָ֖ה (will be disgraced). יֽוֹלַדְתְּכֶ֑ם (She who bore you⁺)

הִנֵּה֙ (behold), אַחֲרִ֣ית (the least) גּוֹיִ֔ם (of the nations)

מִדְבָּ֖ר (a wilderness), צִיָּ֥ה (a dry land), וַעֲרָבָֽה׃ (and a desert).

13  מִקֶּ֤צֶף (From the wrath) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH)

לֹ֣א (not) תֵשֵׁ֔ב (she will be inhabited),

וְהָיְתָ֥ה (and she will become) שְׁמָמָ֖ה (a desolation); כֻּלָּ֑הּ (completely)

כֹּ֚ל (every) עֹבֵ֣ר (one passing) עַל־ (by) בָּבֶ֔ל (Babylon) יִשֹּׁ֥ם (will be horrified),

וְיִשְׁרֹ֖ק (and will hiss) עַל־ (at) כָּל־ (all) מַכּוֹתֶֽיהָ׃ (her wounds).

14  עִרְכ֨וּ (Array yourselves) עַל־ (against) בָּבֶ֤ל׀ (Babylon) סָבִיב֙ (all around);

כָּל־ (all) דֹּ֣רְכֵי (those bending) קֶ֔שֶׁת (the bow),

יְד֣וּ (Shoot) אֵלֶ֔יהָ (at her) אַֽל־ (do not) תַּחְמְל֖וּ (be sparing) אֶל־ (with) חֵ֑ץ (the arrows),

כִּ֥י (for) לַֽיהוָ֖ה (against YHWH) חָטָֽאָה׃ (she has sinned).

15  הָרִ֨יעוּ (Shout) עָלֶ֤יהָ (against her) סָבִיב֙ (all around);

נָתְנָ֣ה (she has given) יָדָ֔הּ (her hand);

נָֽפְלוּ֙ (have fallen), אַשְׁוִיֹּתֶיהָ (her foundations)

נֶהֶרְס֖וּ (are thrown down); חֽוֹמוֹתֶ֑יהָ (her walls)

כִּי֩ (for) נִקְמַ֨ת (the vengeance) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH); הִיא֙ (it is)

הִנָּ֣קְמוּ (take vengeance) בָ֔הּ (on her)

כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) עָשְׂתָ֖ה (she has done),

עֲשׂוּ־ (do) לָֽהּ׃ (to her).

16  כִּרְת֤וּ (Cut off) זוֹרֵ֙עַ֙ (the sower) מִבָּבֶ֔ל (from Babylon)

וְתֹפֵ֥שׂ (and the handler) מַגָּ֖ל (of the sickle) בְּעֵ֣ת (in the time) קָצִ֑יר (of harvest);

מִפְּנֵי֙ (before the face) חֶ֣רֶב (of the sword) הַיּוֹנָ֔ה (oppressing)

אִ֤ישׁ (every one) אֶל־ (to) עַמּוֹ֙ (his people), יִפְנ֔וּ (will turn)

וְאִ֥ישׁ (and every one) לְאַרְצ֖וֹ (to his land) יָנֻֽסוּ׃ס (will flee).

Redemption for God’s People

17  שֶׂ֧ה (Like a flock); פְזוּרָ֛ה (scattered) יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל (is Israel)

אֲרָי֣וֹת (the lions) הִדִּ֑יחוּ (have driven away);

הָרִאשׁ֤וֹן (the first) אֲכָלוֹ֙ (who devoured him)

מֶ֣לֶךְ (was the king) אַשּׁ֔וּר (of Assyria)

וְזֶ֤ה (and this) הָאַחֲרוֹן֙ (last one) עִצְּמ֔וֹ (to crush his bones).

נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֖ר (Is Nebuchadnezzar) מֶ֥לֶךְ (king) בָּבֶֽל׃ס (of Babylon).

18  לָכֵ֗ן (Therefore) כֹּֽה־ (thus) אָמַ֞ר (says) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH of) צְבָאוֹת֙ (Hosts), אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel);

הִנְנִ֥י (Behold, I) פֹקֵ֛ד (am going to visit punishment) אֶל־ (against) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) בָּבֶ֖ל (of Babylon) וְאֶל־ (and against) אַרְצ֑וֹ (his land),

כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר (as) פָּקַ֖דְתִּי (I visited punishment) אֶל־ (against) מֶ֥לֶךְ (the king) אַשּֽׁוּר׃ (of Assyria).

19  וְשֹׁבַבְתִּ֤י (And I will return) אֶת־ (-) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (Israel) אֶל־ (to) נָוֵ֔הוּ (his pasture),

וְרָעָ֥ה (and he will graze) הַכַּרְמֶ֖ל (on Carmel) וְהַבָּשָׁ֑ן (and Bashan),

וּבְהַ֥ר (and in the hill country) אֶפְרַ֛יִם (of Ephraim)

וְהַגִּלְעָ֖ד (and in Gilead) תִּשְׂבַּ֥ע (will be satisfied) נַפְשֽׁוֹ׃ (his soul).

20  בַּיָּמִ֣ים (In the days), הָהֵם֩ (those) וּבָעֵ֨ת (and in the time), הַהִ֜יא (that)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH),

יְבֻקַּ֞שׁ (Will be sought), אֶת־ (-) עֲוֺ֤ן (the iniquity) יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ (of Israel)

וְאֵינֶ֔נּוּ (and it is not);

וְאֶת־ (and) חַטֹּ֥את (the sins) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah),

וְלֹ֣א (and not) תִמָּצֶ֑אינָה (they will be found);

כִּ֥י (for) אֶסְלַ֖ח (I will grant forgiveness)

לַאֲשֶׁ֥ר (to those whom) אַשְׁאִֽיר׃ (I leave as a remnant).

The Destruction of Babylon

21  עַל־ (Against) הָאָ֤רֶץ (the land of) מְרָתַ֙יִם֙ (Merathaim), עֲלֵ֣ה (go up)

עָלֶ֔יהָ (against it) וְאֶל־ (and against) יוֹשְׁבֵ֖י (the dwellers) פְּק֑וֹד (of Pekod).

חֲרֹ֨ב (Slay) וְהַחֲרֵ֤ם (and devote to destruction) אַֽחֲרֵיהֶם֙ (them)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH), וַעֲשֵׂ֕ה (And do) כְּכֹ֖ל (according to all)

אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) צִוִּיתִֽיךָ׃ס (I have commanded you).

22  ק֥וֹל (The voice) מִלְחָמָ֖ה (of battle) בָּאָ֑רֶץ (is in the land),

וְשֶׁ֖בֶר (and of destruction) גָּדֽוֹל׃ (great).

23  אֵ֤יךְ (How) נִגְדַּע֙ (has been cut down) וַיִּשָּׁבֵ֔ר (and broken)!

פַּטִּ֖ישׁ (The hammer) כָּל־ (of all) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth)

אֵ֣יךְ (how) הָיְתָ֧ה (has become) לְשַׁמָּ֛ה (as a desolation) בָּבֶ֖ל (Babylon)

בַּגּוֹיִֽם׃ (among the nations)!

24  יָקֹ֨שְׁתִּי (I laid a snare) לָ֤ךְ (for you) וְגַם־ (and indeed) נִלְכַּדְתְּ֙ (you have been captured), בָּבֶ֔ל (O Babylon),

וְאַ֖תְּ (and you) לֹ֣א (not) יָדָ֑עַתְּ (did know it);

נִמְצֵאת֙ (you were found), וְגַם־ (and also) נִתְפַּ֔שְׂתְּ (were caught),

כִּ֥י (because) בַֽיהוָ֖ה (against YHWH) הִתְגָּרִֽית׃ (you have stirred up yourself).

25  פָּתַ֤ח (Has opened) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) א֣וֹצָר֔וֹ (His storehouse),

וַיּוֹצֵ֖א (and has brought out) אֶת־ (-) כְּלֵ֣י (the weapons) זַעְמ֑וֹ (of His anger),

כִּי־ (for) מְלָאכָ֣ה (a work) הִ֗יא (there is) לַֽאדֹנָ֧י (unto the Lord) יְהוִ֛ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (the Armies)

בְּאֶ֥רֶץ (in the land) כַּשְׂדִּֽים׃ (of the Chaldeans).

26  בֹּֽאוּ־ (Come) לָ֤הּ (against her)

מִקֵּץ֙ (from the extremity),

פִּתְח֣וּ (open) מַאֲבֻסֶ֔יהָ (her granaries),

סָלּ֥וּהָ (and pile her up) כְמוֹ־ (like) עֲרֵמִ֖ים (heaps),

וְהַחֲרִימ֑וּהָ (and devote her to destruction)

אַל־ (do not) תְּהִי־ (let there be) לָ֖הּ (unto her) שְׁאֵרִֽית׃ (a remnant).

27  חִרְבוּ֙ (Slay) כָּל־ (all) פָּרֶ֔יהָ (her bulls);

יֵרְד֖וּ (let them go down) לַטָּ֑בַח (to the slaughter)!

ה֣וֹי (Woe) עֲלֵיהֶ֔ם (to them) כִּֽי־ (for) בָ֥א (has come), יוֹמָ֖ם (their day)

עֵ֥ת (the time) פְּקֻדָּתָֽם׃ס (of their punishment).

28  ק֥וֹל (The voice) נָסִ֛ים (of those fleeing) וּפְלֵטִ֖ים (and escaping)

מֵאֶ֣רֶץ (from the land) בָּבֶ֑ל (of Babylon),

לְהַגִּ֣יד (to declare) בְּצִיּ֗וֹן (in Zion) אֶת־ (-) נִקְמַת֙ (the vengeance) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ (our God),

נִקְמַ֖ת (the vengeance) הֵיכָלֽוֹ׃ (for His temple).

29  הַשְׁמִ֣יעוּ (Call together) אֶל־ (against) בָּבֶ֣ל׀ (Babylon), רַ֠בִּים (the archers)

כָּל־ (all) דֹּ֨רְכֵי (those bending) קֶ֜שֶׁת (the bow),

חֲנ֧וּ (encamp) עָלֶ֣יהָ (against her) סָבִ֗יב (all around);

אַל־ (do not) יְהִיָ֙־ (let there be) פְּלֵטָ֔ה (one escaping);

שַׁלְּמוּ־ (Repay) לָ֣הּ (to her) כְּפָעֳלָ֔הּ (according to her work);

כְּכֹ֛ל (according to all) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) עָשְׂתָ֖ה (she has done), עֲשׂוּ־ (do) לָ֑הּ (to her)

כִּ֧י (for) אֶל־ (against) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH), זָ֖דָה (she has seethed)

אֶל־ (against) קְד֥וֹשׁ (the Holy One) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).

30  לָכֵ֛ן (Therefore) יִפְּל֥וּ (will fall) בַחוּרֶ֖יהָ (her young men) בִּרְחֹבֹתֶ֑יהָ (in the streets),

וְכָל־ (and all) אַנְשֵׁ֨י (her men) מִלְחַמְתָּ֥הּ (of war) יִדַּ֛מּוּ (will be cut off) בַּיּ֥וֹם (on the day), הַה֖וּא (that)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH).

31  הִנְנִ֤י (Behold, I am) אֵלֶ֙יךָ֙ (against you) זָד֔וֹן (O arrogant one),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) אֲדֹנָ֥י (of the Lord) יְהוִ֖ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֑וֹת (Hosts),

כִּ֛י (For) בָּ֥א (has come), יוֹמְךָ֖ (your day)

עֵ֥ת (the time) פְּקַדְתִּֽיךָ׃ (that I will visit punishment on you).

32  וְכָשַׁ֤ל (And will stumble) זָדוֹן֙ (the arrogant one) וְנָפַ֔ל (and will fall),

וְאֵ֥ין (and there will not be) ל֖וֹ (for him) מֵקִ֑ים (one to raise him up);

וְהִצַּ֤תִּי (and I will kindle) אֵשׁ֙ (a fire) בְּעָרָ֔יו (in his cities),

וְאָכְלָ֖ה (and it will devour) כָּל־ (all) סְבִיבֹתָֽיו׃ס (around him).

33  כֹּ֤ה (Thus) אָמַר֙ (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts);

עֲשׁוּקִ֛ים (are oppressed) בְּנֵי־ (the sons) יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל (of Israel)

וּבְנֵי־ (and the sons) יְהוּדָ֖ה (of Judah) יַחְדָּ֑ו (together);

וְכָל־ (and all) שֹֽׁבֵיהֶם֙ (who took them captive) הֶחֱזִ֣יקוּ (have held firmly); בָ֔ם (to them)

מֵאֲנ֖וּ (they have refused) שַׁלְּחָֽם׃ (to send them away).

34  גֹּאֲלָ֣ם׀ (Their Redeemer) חָזָ֗ק (is strong);

יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH of) צְבָאוֹת֙ (Hosts) שְׁמ֔וֹ (is His name);

רִ֥יב (pleading) יָרִ֖יב (He will plead) אֶת־ (-) רִיבָ֑ם (their fight),

לְמַ֙עַן֙ (so as) הִרְגִּ֣יעַ (to give rest) אֶת־ (-) הָאָ֔רֶץ (to the land),

וְהִרְגִּ֖יז (and to bring trembling) לְיֹשְׁבֵ֥י (to the dwellers) בָבֶֽל׃ (of Babylon).

35  חֶ֥רֶב (A sword) עַל־ (is upon) כַּשְׂדִּ֖ים (the Chaldeans),

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH),

וְאֶל־ (and against) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) בָבֶ֔ל (of Babylon),

וְאֶל־ (and against) שָׂרֶ֖יהָ (her princes), וְאֶל־ (and against) חֲכָמֶֽיהָ׃ (her wise men).

36  חֶ֥רֶב (A sword) אֶל־ (is against) הַבַּדִּ֖ים (the diviners);

וְנֹאָ֑לוּ (that they should become fools);

חֶ֥רֶב (a sword) אֶל־ (is against) גִּבּוֹרֶ֖יהָ (her mighty ones);

וָחָֽתּוּ׃ (that they should be dismayed).

37  חֶ֜רֶב (A sword) אֶל־ (is against) סוּסָ֣יו (their horses), וְאֶל־ (and against) רִכְבּ֗וֹ (their chariots),

וְאֶל־ (and against) כָּל־ (all) הָעֶ֛רֶב (the mixture) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who are) בְּתוֹכָ֖הּ (in her midst)

וְהָי֣וּ (that they should become) לְנָשִׁ֑ים (as women)!

חֶ֥רֶב (A sword) אֶל־ (is against) אוֹצְרֹתֶ֖יהָ (her treasures);

וּבֻזָּֽזוּ׃ (that they should be plundered).

38  חֹ֥רֶב (A drought) אֶל־ (is against) מֵימֶ֖יהָ (her waters);

וְיָבֵ֑שׁוּ (that they should be dried up);

כִּ֣י (For) אֶ֤רֶץ (a land) פְּסִלִים֙ (of graven images), הִ֔יא (it is)

וּבָאֵימִ֖ים (and over idols) יִתְהֹלָֽלוּ׃ (they go mad).

39  לָכֵ֗ן (Therefore) יֵשְׁב֤וּ (will dwell there) צִיִּים֙ (the desert creatures) אֶת־ (with) אִיִּ֔ים (the jackals)

וְיָ֥שְׁבוּ (and will dwell) בָ֖הּ (in it) בְּנ֣וֹת (the daughters) יַֽעֲנָ֑ה (of the ostrich)

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תֵשֵׁ֥ב (it will be a habitation) עוֹד֙ (anymore) לָנֶ֔צַח (forever);

וְלֹ֥א (and not) תִשְׁכּ֖וֹן (will it be a dwelling place) עַד־ (unto) דּ֥וֹר (generation) וָדֽוֹר׃ (and generation).

40  כְּמַהְפֵּכַ֨ת (As overthrew) אֱלֹהִ֜ים (God) אֶת־ (-) סְדֹ֧ם (Sodom) וְאֶת־ (and) עֲמֹרָ֛ה (Gomorrah)

וְאֶת־ (and) שְׁכֵנֶ֖יהָ (their neighbors)

נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH);

לֹֽא־ (No) יֵשֵׁ֥ב (will dwell) שָׁם֙ (there), אִ֔ישׁ (man)

וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יָג֥וּר (will reside) בָּ֖הּ (in it) בֶּן־ (a son) אָדָֽם׃ (of man).

41  הִנֵּ֛ה (Behold), עַ֥ם (a people) בָּ֖א (is coming) מִצָּפ֑וֹן (from the north),

וְג֤וֹי (and a nation), גָּדוֹל֙ (great) וּמְלָכִ֣ים (and kings) רַבִּ֔ים (many) יֵעֹ֖רוּ (will be roused)

מִיַּרְכְּתֵי־ (from the ends) אָֽרֶץ׃ (of the earth).

42  קֶ֣שֶׁת (The bow) וְכִידֹ֞ן (and the spear); יַחֲזִ֗יקוּ (they hold firm)

אַכְזָרִ֥י (cruel), הֵ֙מָּה֙ (they are) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יְרַחֵ֔מוּ (do they have compassion);

קוֹלָם֙ (their voice) כַּיָּ֣ם (like the sea), יֶהֱמֶ֔ה (does roar)

וְעַל־ (and on) סוּסִ֖ים (horses), יִרְכָּ֑בוּ (they are riding)

עָר֗וּךְ (being arrayed), כְּאִישׁ֙ (like a man) לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה (for the battle), עָלַ֖יִךְ (against you)

בַּת־ (O daughter) בָּבֶֽל׃ (of Babylon).

43  שָׁמַ֧ע (Has heard) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) בָּבֶ֛ל (of Babylon) אֶת־ (-) שִׁמְעָ֖ם (the report of them)

וְרָפ֣וּ (and hang limp); יָדָ֑יו (his hands)

צָרָה֙ (distress) הֶחֱזִיקַ֔תְהוּ (has taken hold of him)

חִ֖יל (writhing) כַּיּוֹלֵדָֽה׃ (like that of a woman in labor).

44  הִ֠נֵּה (Behold), כְּאַרְיֵ֞ה (like a lion) יַעֲלֶ֨ה (that comes up) מִגְּא֣וֹן (from the height) הַיַּרְדֵּן֮ (of the Jordan)

אֶל־ (against) נְוֵ֣ה (a habitation) אֵיתָן֒ (enduring);

כִּֽי־ (so) אַרְגִּ֤עָה (I will act in an instant) אֲרוּצֵם (and will make them run away) מֵֽעָלֶ֔יהָ (from her)

וּמִ֥י (and who is) בָח֖וּר (the chosen one) אֵלֶ֣יהָ (over her) אֶפְקֹ֑ד (I will appoint)

כִּ֣י (for) מִ֤י (who is) כָמ֙וֹנִי֙ (like Me)? וּמִ֣י (And who) יוֹעִדֶ֔נִּי (will arraign Me)?

וּמִֽי־ (And who is) זֶ֣ה (this) רֹעֶ֔ה (shepherd) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who) יַעֲמֹ֖ד (can stand) לְפָנָֽי׃ (before My face).

45  לָכֵ֞ן (Therefore) שִׁמְע֣וּ (hear) עֲצַת־ (the counsel) יְהוָ֗ה (of YHWH),

אֲשֶׁ֤ר (that) יָעַץ֙ (He has counseled) אֶל־ (against) בָּבֶ֔ל (Babylon);

וּמַ֨חְשְׁבוֹתָ֔יו (and His plans), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (that) חָשַׁ֖ב (He has planned)

אֶל־ (against) אֶ֣רֶץ (the land) כַּשְׂדִּ֑ים (of the Chaldeans);

אִם־ (surely) לֹ֤א (not) יִסְחָבוּם֙ (they will drag them out); צְעִירֵ֣י (the least) הַצֹּ֔אן (of the flock)

אִם־ (surely) לֹ֥א (not) יַשִּׁ֛ים (desolate) עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם (over them) נָוֶֽה׃ (will He make their dwelling place).

46  מִקּוֹל֙ (From the sound) נִתְפְּשָׂ֣ה (of being captured) בָבֶ֔ל (Babylon) נִרְעֲשָׁ֖ה (is shaken), הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth)

וּזְעָקָ֖ה (and the outcry) בַּגּוֹיִ֥ם (among the nations) נִשְׁמָֽע׃ס (is heard).
