Job: God Will Punish the Wicked
1 וַיַּ֥עַן (And answered) אִיּ֗וֹב (Job) וַיֹּאמַֽר׃ (and said):
2 שִׁמְע֣וּ (Listen) שָׁ֭מוֹעַ (with hearing) מִלָּתִ֑י (to my speech),
וּתְהִי־ (and let be) זֹ֝֗את (this) תַּנְח֥וּמֹֽתֵיכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ consolation).
3 שָׂ֭אוּנִי (Bear with me) וְאָנֹכִ֣י (that I) אֲדַבֵּ֑ר (may speak);
וְאַחַ֖ר (and after) דַּבְּרִ֣י (I have spoken), תַלְעִֽיג׃ (you may mock).
4 הֶ֭אָנֹכִי (As for me)— לְאָדָ֣ם (against man) שִׂיחִ֑י (is my complaint)?
וְאִם־ (And if so), מַ֝דּ֗וּעַ (why) לֹא־ (should not) תִקְצַ֥ר (be short) רוּחִֽי׃ (my spirit)?
5 פְּנוּ־ (Turn) אֵלַ֥י (to me) וְהָשַׁ֑מּוּ (and be appalled),
וְשִׂ֖ימוּ (and put) יָ֣ד (a hand) עַל־ (over) פֶּֽה׃ (your mouth).
6 וְאִם־ (And even when) זָכַ֥רְתִּי (I remember), וְנִבְהָ֑לְתִּי (and I am terrified),
וְאָחַ֥ז (and seizes) בְּ֝שָׂרִ֗י (my flesh) פַּלָּצֽוּת׃ (trembling).
7 מַדּ֣וּעַ (Why do) רְשָׁעִ֣ים (the wicked) יִחְי֑וּ (live on) עָ֝תְק֗וּ (growing old),
גַּם־ (even) גָּ֥בְרוּ (becoming mighty) חָֽיִל׃ (in power)?
8 זַרְעָ֤ם (Their seed) נָכ֣וֹן (is established) לִפְנֵיהֶ֣ם (before their face) עִמָּ֑ם (with them),
וְ֝צֶאֱצָאֵיהֶ֗ם (and their offspring) לְעֵינֵיהֶֽם׃ (before their eyes).
9 בָּתֵּיהֶ֣ם (Their houses are) שָׁל֣וֹם (safe) מִפָּ֑חַד (from dread),
וְלֹ֤א (and not) שֵׁ֖בֶט (is the rod) אֱל֣וֹהַּ (of God) עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (upon them).
10 שׁוֹר֣וֹ (His bull) עִ֭בַּר (passes over), וְלֹ֣א (without) יַגְעִ֑ל (fail);
תְּפַלֵּ֥ט (brings forth) פָּ֝רָת֗וֹ (his cow), וְלֹ֣א (and does not) תְשַׁכֵּֽל׃ (miscarry).
11 יְשַׁלְּח֣וּ (They send forth) כַ֭צֹּאן (like a flock) עֲוִילֵיהֶ֑ם (their little boys),
וְ֝יַלְדֵיהֶ֗ם (and their children) יְרַקֵּדֽוּן׃ (skip about).
12 יִ֭שְׂאוּ (They lift up) כְּתֹ֣ף (to the tambourine) וְכִנּ֑וֹר (and harp),
וְ֝יִשְׂמְח֗וּ (and they rejoice) לְק֣וֹל (at the sound) עוּגָֽב׃ (of the flute).
13 יְבַלּוּ (They wear out) בַטּ֣וֹב (in prosperity) יְמֵיהֶ֑ם (their days),
וּ֝בְרֶ֗גַע (and in peace) שְׁא֣וֹל (to Sheol) יֵחָֽתּוּ׃ (they go down).
14 וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ (And they say) לָ֭אֵל (to God), ס֣וּר (Turn away) מִמֶּ֑נּוּ (from us)!
וְדַ֥עַת (And for to know) דְּ֝רָכֶ֗יךָ (Your ways) לֹ֣א (not) חָפָֽצְנוּ׃ (do we delight).
15 מַה־ (What is) שַׁדַּ֥י (Shaddai) כִּֽי־ (that) נַֽעַבְדֶ֑נּוּ (we should serve Him),
וּמַה־ (and what) נּ֝וֹעִ֗יל (do we gain) כִּ֣י (that) נִפְגַּע־ (we should meet) בּֽוֹ׃ (with Him).
16 הֵ֤ן (Behold), לֹ֣א (is not) בְיָדָ֣ם (in their hand) טוּבָ֑ם (their own good);
עֲצַ֥ת (the counsel) רְ֝שָׁעִ֗ים (of the wicked) רָ֣חֲקָה (is far) מֶֽנִּי׃ (from me).
17 כַּמָּ֤ה׀ (How often) נֵר־ (is the lamp) רְשָׁ֘עִ֤ים (of the wicked) יִדְעָ֗ךְ (put out),
וְיָבֹ֣א (and comes) עָלֵ֣ימוֹ (upon them) אֵידָ֑ם (their destruction)?
חֲ֝בָלִ֗ים (The pains) יְחַלֵּ֥ק (He apportions) בְּאַפּֽוֹ׃ (in His anger).
18 יִהְי֗וּ (They become) כְּתֶ֥בֶן (like straw) לִפְנֵי־ (before the face) ר֑וּחַ (of the wind),
וּ֝כְמֹ֗ץ (and like chaff) גְּנָבַ֥תּוּ (carries him away) סוּפָֽה׃ (that the storm).
19 אֱל֗וֹהַּ (God) יִצְפֹּן־ (does store up) לְבָנָ֥יו (for his sons) אוֹנ֑וֹ (his trouble)’
יְשַׁלֵּ֖ם (let Him repay) אֵלָ֣יו (to him) וְיֵדָֽע׃ (and he will know).
20 יִרְא֣וּ (Let see) עֵינוֹ (his eyes) כִּיד֑וֹ (his destruction),
וּמֵחֲמַ֖ת (and from the wrath) שַׁדַּ֣י (of Shaddai) יִשְׁתֶּֽה׃ (let him drink).
21 כִּ֤י (For) מַה־ (what) חֶפְצ֣וֹ (is his delight) בְּבֵית֣וֹ (in his house) אַחֲרָ֑יו (after him),
וּמִסְפַּ֖ר (when the number) חֳדָשָׁ֣יו (of his months) חֻצָּֽצוּ׃ (is cut off)?
22 הַלְאֵ֥ל (Can one to God) יְלַמֶּד־ (teach) דָּ֑עַת (knowledge),
וְ֝ה֗וּא (since He) רָמִ֥ים (those being high) יִשְׁפּֽוֹט׃ (judges)?
23 זֶ֗ה (This one) יָ֭מוּת (dies) בְּעֶ֣צֶם (in the bone) תֻּמּ֑וֹ (of his perfection),
כֻּ֝לּ֗וֹ (all of him) שַׁלְאֲנַ֥ן (at ease) וְשָׁלֵֽיו׃ (and at rest).
24 עֲ֭טִינָיו (His pails) מָלְא֣וּ (are full of) חָלָ֑ב (milk),
וּמֹ֖חַ (and the marrow) עַצְמוֹתָ֣יו (of his bones) יְשֻׁקֶּֽה׃ (is moist).
25 וְזֶ֗ה (And this one) יָ֭מוּת (dies) בְּנֶ֣פֶשׁ (with his soul) מָרָ֑ה (bitter),
וְלֹֽא־ (and not) אָ֝כַ֗ל (having eaten) בַּטּוֹבָֽה׃ (of the good).
26 יַ֭חַד (Together) עַל־ (upon) עָפָ֣ר (the dust) יִשְׁכָּ֑בוּ (they lie down),
וְ֝רִמָּ֗ה (and the worm) תְּכַסֶּ֥ה (covers) עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ (them over).
27 הֵ֣ן (Behold), יָ֭דַעְתִּי (I know) מַחְשְׁבֽוֹתֵיכֶ֑ם (your⁺ thoughts),
וּ֝מְזִמּ֗וֹת (and the notions) עָלַ֥י (upon me) תַּחְמֹֽסוּ׃ (you⁺ wrest).
28 כִּ֤י (For) תֹֽאמְר֗וּ (you⁺ say), אַיֵּ֥ה (Where is) בֵית־ (the house) נָדִ֑יב (of the noble)?
וְ֝אַיֵּ֗ה (And where is) אֹ֤הֶל׀ (the tent)— מִשְׁכְּנ֬וֹת (of the habitation) רְשָׁעִֽים׃ (of the wicked)?
29 הֲלֹ֣א (Have not) שְׁ֭אֶלְתֶּם (you⁺ asked) ע֣וֹבְרֵי (those passing along) דָ֑רֶךְ (the way)?
וְ֝אֹתֹתָ֗ם (And their signs) לֹ֣א (do not) תְנַכֵּֽרוּ׃ (you⁺ recognize)?
30 כִּ֤י (That) לְי֣וֹם (from a day) אֵ֭יד (of calamity) יֵחָ֣שֶׂךְ (is held back) רָ֑ע (the evil one);
לְי֖וֹם (and in the day) עֲבָר֣וֹת (of wrath) יוּבָֽלוּ׃ (they are brought forth).
31 מִֽי־ (Who) יַגִּ֣יד (shall declare) עַל־ (to) פָּנָ֣יו (his face) דַּרְכּ֑וֹ (his way)?
וְהֽוּא־ (And for what) עָ֝שָׂ֗ה (he has done), מִ֣י (who) יְשַׁלֶּם־ (will repay) לֽוֹ׃ (him)?
32 וְ֭הוּא (And he) לִקְבָר֣וֹת (to the graves) יוּבָ֑ל (is brought along),
וְֽעַל־ (and over) גָּדִ֥ישׁ (his tomb) יִשְׁקֽוֹד׃ (one keeps watch).
33 מָֽתְקוּ־ (Are sweet) ל֗וֹ (to him) רִגְבֵ֫י (the clods) נָ֥חַל (of the torrent)
וְ֭אַחֲרָיו (and after him) כָּל־ (every) אָדָ֣ם (man) יִמְשׁ֑וֹךְ (will extend),
וּ֝לְפָנָ֗יו (and those before his face) אֵ֣ין (are without) מִסְפָּֽר׃ (number).
34 וְ֭אֵיךְ (And how) תְּנַחֲמ֣וּנִי (can you⁺ comfort me) הָ֑בֶל (in vain),
וּ֝תְשֽׁוּבֹתֵיכֶ֗ם (and in your⁺ answers) נִשְׁאַר־ (remains) מָֽעַל׃ס (falsehood)?
