1 Woe to those who enact unjust statutes and issue oppressive decrees, Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression, Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and that write grievousness <i>which</i> they have prescribed; Woe to those who enact unjust statutes And to those who constantly record harmful decisions, Woe to those who make unjust laws, to those who issue oppressive decrees,
2 to deprive the poor of fair treatment and withhold justice from the oppressed of My people, to make widows their prey and orphans their plunder. to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right from the poor of my people, that widows may be their prey, and <i>that</i> they may rob the fatherless! So as to deprive the needy of justice And rob the poor among My people of <i>their</i> rights, So that widows may be their spoil And that they may plunder the orphans. to deprive the poor of their rights and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people, making widows their prey and robbing the fatherless.
3 What will you do on the day of reckoning when devastation comes from afar? To whom will you flee for help? Where will you leave your wealth? What will you do on the day of punishment, in the ruin that will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth? And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the desolation <i>which</i> shall come from far? to whom will ye flee for help? and where will ye leave your glory? Now what will you do in the day of punishment, And in the devastation which will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help? And where will you leave your wealth? What will you do on the day of reckoning, when disaster comes from afar? To whom will you run for help? Where will you leave your riches?
4 Nothing will remain but to crouch among the captives or fall among the slain. Despite all this, His anger is not turned away; His hand is still upraised. Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still. Without me they shall bow down under the prisoners, and they shall fall under the slain. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand <i>is</i> stretched out still. Nothing <i>remains</i> but to crouch among the captives Or fall among those killed. In <i>spite of</i> all this, His anger does not turn away And His hand is still stretched out. Nothing will remain but to cringe among the captives or fall among the slain. Yet for all this, his anger is not turned away, his hand is still upraised.
5 Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger; the staff in their hands is My wrath. Woe to Assyria, the rod of my anger; the staff in their hands is my fury! O Assyrian, the rod of mine anger, and the staff in their hand is mine indignation. Woe to Assyria, the rod of My anger And the staff in whose hands is My indignation, “Woe to the Assyrian, the rod of my anger, in whose hand is the club of my wrath!
6 I will send him against a godless nation; I will dispatch him against a people destined for My rage, to take spoils and seize plunder, and to trample them down like clay in the streets. Against a godless nation I send him, and against the people of my wrath I command him, to take spoil and seize plunder, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. I will send him against an hypocritical nation, and against the people of my wrath will I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets. I send it against a godless nation And commission it against the people of My fury To capture spoils and to seize plunder, And to trample them down like mud in the streets. I send him against a godless nation, I dispatch him against a people who anger me, to seize loot and snatch plunder, and to trample them down like mud in the streets.
7 But this is not his intention; this is not his plan. For it is in his heart to destroy and cut off many nations. But he does not so intend, and his heart does not so think; but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off nations not a few; Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so; but <i>it is</i> in his heart to destroy and cut off nations not a few. Yet it does not so intend, Nor does it plan so in its heart, But rather it is its purpose to destroy And to eliminate many nations. But this is not what he intends, this is not what he has in mind; his purpose is to destroy, to put an end to many nations.
8 “Are not all my commanders kings?” he says. for he says: “Are not my commanders all kings? For he saith, <i>Are</i> not my princes altogether kings? For it says, “Are not my officers all kings? Are not my commanders all kings?’ he says.
9 “Is not Calno like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus? Is not Calno like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad? Is not Samaria like Damascus? <i>Is</i> not Calno as Carchemish? <i>is</i> not Hamath as Arpad? <i>is</i> not Samaria as Damascus? “Is not Calno like Carchemish, Or Hamath like Arpad, Or Samaria like Damascus? Has not Kalno fared like Carchemish? Is not Hamath like Arpad, and Samaria like Damascus?
10 As my hand seized the idolatrous kingdoms whose images surpassed those of Jerusalem and Samaria, As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols, whose carved images were greater than those of Jerusalem and Samaria, As my hand hath found the kingdoms of the idols, and whose graven images did excel them of Jerusalem and of Samaria; “As my hand has reached to the kingdoms of the idols, Whose carved images <i>were greater</i> than those of Jerusalem and Samaria, As my hand seized the kingdoms of the idols, kingdoms whose images excelled those of Jerusalem and Samaria—
11 and as I have done to Samaria and its idols, will I not also do to Jerusalem and her idols?” shall I not do to Jerusalem and her idols as I have done to Samaria and her images?” Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols? Shall I not do the same to Jerusalem and her images Just as I have done to Samaria and her idols?” shall I not deal with Jerusalem and her images as I dealt with Samaria and her idols?’”
12 So when the Lord has completed all His work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, He will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria for the fruit of his arrogant heart and the proud look in his eyes. When the Lord has finished all his work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, he will punish the speech of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the boastful look in his eyes. Wherefore it shall come to pass, <i>that</i> when the Lord hath performed his whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the stout heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his high looks. So it will be that when the Lord has completed all His work on Mount Zion and on Jerusalem, <i>He will say,</i> “I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria and the arrogant pride of his eyes.” When the Lord has finished all his work against Mount Zion and Jerusalem, he will say, “I will punish the king of Assyria for the willful pride of his heart and the haughty look in his eyes.
13 For he says: ‘By the strength of my hand I have done this, and by my wisdom, for I am clever. I have removed the boundaries of nations and plundered their treasures; like a mighty one I subdued their rulers. For he says: “By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I have understanding; I remove the boundaries of peoples, and plunder their treasures; like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones. For he saith, By the strength of my hand I have done <i>it</i>, and by my wisdom; for I am prudent: and I have removed the bounds of the people, and have robbed their treasures, and I have put down the inhabitants like a valiant <i>man</i>: For he has said, “By the power of my hand and by my wisdom I did <i>this,</i> Because I have understanding; And I removed the boundaries of the peoples And plundered their treasures, And like a powerful man I brought down <i>their</i> inhabitants, For he says: “’By the strength of my hand I have done this, and by my wisdom, because I have understanding. I removed the boundaries of nations, I plundered their treasures; like a mighty one I subdued their kings.
14 My hand reached as into a nest to seize the wealth of the nations. Like one gathering abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth. No wing fluttered, no beak opened or chirped.’ ” My hand has found like a nest the wealth of the peoples; and as one gathers eggs that have been forsaken, so I have gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved a wing or opened the mouth or chirped.” And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the people: and as one gathereth eggs <i>that are</i> left, have I gathered all the earth; and there was none that moved the wing, or opened the mouth, or peeped. And my hand reached to the riches of the peoples like a nest, And as one gathers abandoned eggs, I gathered all the earth; And there was not one that flapped its wing, opened <i>its</i> beak, or chirped.” As one reaches into a nest, so my hand reached for the wealth of the nations; as people gather abandoned eggs, so I gathered all the countries; not one flapped a wing, or opened its mouth to chirp.’”
15 Does an axe raise itself above the one who swings it? Does a saw boast over him who saws with it? It would be like a rod waving the one who lifts it, or a staff lifting him who is not wood! Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it, or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield him who lifts it, or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood! Shall the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith? <i>or</i> shall the saw magnify itself against him that shaketh it? as if the rod should shake <i>itself</i> against them that lift it up, <i>or</i> as if the staff should lift up <i>itself, as if it were</i> no wood. Is the axe to boast itself over the one who chops with it? Is the saw to exalt itself over the one who wields it? <i>That would be</i> like a club wielding those who lift it, <i>Or</i> like a rod lifting <i>the one who</i> is not wood. Does the ax raise itself above the person who swings it, or the saw boast against the one who uses it? As if a rod were to wield the person who lifts it up, or a club brandish the one who is not wood!
16 Therefore the Lord GOD of Hosts will send a wasting disease among Assyria’s stout warriors, and under his pomp will be kindled a fire like a burning flame. Therefore the Lord GOD of hosts will send wasting sickness among his stout warriors, and under his glory a burning will be kindled, like the burning of fire. Therefore shall the Lord, the Lord of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness; and under his glory he shall kindle a burning like the burning of a fire. Therefore the Lord, the GOD of armies, will send a wasting disease among his stout warriors; And under his glory a fire will be kindled like a burning flame. Therefore, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, will send a wasting disease upon his sturdy warriors; under his pomp a fire will be kindled like a blazing flame.
17 And the Light of Israel will become a fire, and its Holy One a flame. In a single day it will burn and devour Assyria’s thorns and thistles. The light of Israel will become a fire, and his Holy One a flame, and it will burn and devour his thorns and briers in one day. And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame: and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day; And the Light of Israel will become a fire and Israel’s Holy One a flame, And it will burn and devour his thorns and his briars in a single day. The Light of Israel will become a fire, their Holy One a flame; in a single day it will burn and consume his thorns and his briers.
18 The splendor of its forests and orchards, both soul and body, it will completely destroy, as a sickness consumes a man. The glory of his forest and of his fruitful land the LORD will destroy, both soul and body, and it will be as when a sick man wastes away. And shall consume the glory of his forest, and of his fruitful field, both soul and body: and they shall be as when a standardbearer fainteth. And He will destroy the glory of his forest and of his fruitful garden, both soul and body, And it will be as when a sick person wastes away. The splendor of his forests and fertile fields it will completely destroy, as when a sick person wastes away.
19 The remaining trees of its forests will be so few that a child could count them. The remnant of the trees of his forest will be so few that a child can write them down. And the rest of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them. And the rest of the trees of his forest will be so small in number That a child could write them down. And the remaining trees of his forests will be so few that a child could write them down.
20 On that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no longer depend on him who struck them, but they will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel. In that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors of the house of Jacob will no more lean on him who struck them, but will lean on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. And it shall come to pass in that day, <i>that</i> the remnant of Israel, and such as are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, in truth. Now on that day the remnant of Israel, and those of the house of Jacob who have escaped, will no longer rely on the one who struck them, but will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel. In that day the remnant of Israel, the survivors of Jacob, will no longer rely on him who struck them down but will truly rely on the LORD, the Holy One of Israel.
21 A remnant will return a remnant of Jacob— to the Mighty God. A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. The remnant shall return, <i>even</i> the remnant of Jacob, unto the mighty God. A remnant will return, the remnant of Jacob, to the mighty God. 22 Though your people, O Israel, be like the sand of the sea, only a remnant will return. Destruction has been decreed, overflowing with righteousness. For though thy people Israel be as the sand of the sea, <i>yet</i> a remnant of them shall return: the consumption decreed shall overflow with righteousness. Though your people be like the sand by the sea, Israel, only a remnant will return. Destruction has been decreed, overwhelming and righteous.
23 For the Lord GOD of Hosts will carry out the destruction decreed upon the whole land. For the Lord GOD of hosts will make a full end, as decreed, in the midst of all the earth. For the Lord GOD of hosts shall make a consumption, even determined, in the midst of all the land. For a complete destruction, one that is determined, the Lord GOD of armies will execute in the midst of the whole land. The Lord, the LORD Almighty, will carry out the destruction decreed upon the whole land.
24 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD of Hosts says: “O My people who dwell in Zion, do not fear Assyria, who strikes you with a rod and lifts his staff against you as the Egyptians did. Therefore thus says the Lord GOD of hosts: “O my people, who dwell in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrians when they strike with the rod and lift up their staff against you as the Egyptians did. Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD of hosts, O my people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of the Assyrian: he shall smite thee with a rod, and shall lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt. Therefore this is what the Lord GOD of armies says: “My people, you who dwell in Zion, do not fear the Assyrian who strikes you with the rod, and lifts up his staff against you the way Egypt <i>did.</i> Therefore this is what the Lord, the LORD Almighty, says: “My people who live in Zion, do not be afraid of the Assyrians, who beat you with a rod and lift up a club against you, as Egypt did.
25 For in just a little while My fury against you will subside, and My anger will turn to their destruction.” For in a very little while my fury will come to an end, and my anger will be directed to their destruction. For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall cease, and mine anger in their destruction. For in a very little while My indignation <i>against you</i> will be ended and My anger <i>will be directed</i> toward their destruction.” Very soon my anger against you will end and my wrath will be directed to their destruction.”
26 And the LORD of Hosts will brandish a whip against them, as when He struck Midian at the rock of Oreb. He will raise His staff over the sea, as He did in Egypt. And the LORD of hosts will wield against them a whip, as when he struck Midian at the rock of Oreb. And his staff will be over the sea, and he will lift it as he did in Egypt. And the LORD of hosts shall stir up a scourge for him according to the slaughter of Midian at the rock of Oreb: and <i>as</i> his rod <i>was</i> upon the sea, so shall he lift it up after the manner of Egypt. The LORD of armies will wield a whip against him like the defeat of Midian at the rock of Oreb; and His staff will be over the sea, and He will lift it up the way <i>He did in</i> Egypt. The LORD Almighty will lash them with a whip, as when he struck down Midian at the rock of Oreb; and he will raise his staff over the waters, as he did in Egypt.
27 On that day the burden will be lifted from your shoulders, and the yoke from your neck. The yoke will be broken because your neck will be too large. And in that day his burden will depart from your shoulder, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because of the fat.” And it shall come to pass in that day, <i>that</i> his burden shall be taken away from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed because of the anointing. So it will be on that day, that his burden will be removed from your shoulders, and his yoke from your neck; and the yoke will be broken because of fatness. In that day their burden will be lifted from your shoulders, their yoke from your neck; the yoke will be broken because you have grown so fat.
28 Assyria has entered Aiath and passed through Migron, storing their supplies at Michmash. He has come to Aiath; he has passed through Migron; at Michmash he stores his baggage; He is come to Aiath, he is passed to Migron; at Michmash he hath laid up his carriages: He has come against Aiath, He has passed through Migron; At Michmash he deposited his baggage. They enter Aiath; they pass through Migron; they store supplies at Mikmash.
29 They have crossed at the ford: “We will spend the night at Geba.” Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul flees. they have crossed over the pass; at Geba they lodge for the night; Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul has fled. They are gone over the passage: they have taken up their lodging at Geba; Ramah is afraid; Gibeah of Saul is fled. They have gone through the pass, <i>saying,</i> “Geba will be our encampment for the night.” Ramah is terrified, and Gibeah of Saul has fled. They go over the pass, and say, “We will camp overnight at Geba.” Ramah trembles; Gibeah of Saul flees.
30 Cry aloud, O Daughter of Gallim! Listen, O Laishah! O wretched Anathoth! Cry aloud, O daughter of Gallim! Give attention, O Laishah! O poor Anathoth! Lift up thy voice, O daughter of Gallim: cause it to be heard unto Laish, O poor Anathoth. Cry aloud with your voice, daughter of Gallim! Pay attention, Laishah <i>and</i> wretched Anathoth! Cry out, Daughter Gallim! Listen, Laishah! Poor Anathoth!
31 Madmenah flees; the people of Gebim take refuge. Madmenah is in flight; the inhabitants of Gebim flee for safety. Madmenah is removed; the inhabitants of Gebim gather themselves to flee. Madmenah has fled. The inhabitants of Gebim have sought refuge. Madmenah is in flight; the people of Gebim take cover.
32 Yet today they will halt at Nob, shaking a fist at the mount of Daughter Zion, at the hill of Jerusalem. This very day he will halt at Nob; he will shake his fist at the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. As yet shall he remain at Nob that day: he shall shake his hand <i>against</i> the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. Yet today he will halt at Nob; He shakes his fist at the mountain of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. This day they will halt at Nob; they will shake their fist at the mount of Daughter Zion, at the hill of Jerusalem.
33 Behold, the Lord GOD of Hosts will lop off the branches with terrifying power. The tall trees will be cut down, the lofty ones will be felled. Behold, the Lord GOD of hosts will lop the boughs with terrifying power; the great in height will be hewn down, and the lofty will be brought low. Behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, shall lop the bough with terror: and the high ones of stature <i>shall be</i> hewn down, and the haughty shall be humbled. Behold, the Lord, the GOD of armies, will lop off the branches with terrifying power; Those also who are tall in stature will be cut down, And those who are lofty will be brought low. See, the Lord, the LORD Almighty, will lop off the boughs with great power. The lofty trees will be felled, the tall ones will be brought low.
34 He will clear the forest thickets with an axe, and Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One. He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an axe, and Lebanon will fall by the Majestic One. And he shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one. He will cut down the thickets of the forest with an iron <i>axe,</i> And Lebanon will fall by the Mighty One. He will cut down the forest thickets with an ax; Lebanon will fall before the Mighty One.
