Judges 3

Nations Left to Test Israel

These are the nations that the LORD left

God did not remove every Canaanite people immediately. Their continued presence fulfilled His earlier warning and exposed Israel’s incomplete obedience in the conquest. The Philistines, Canaanites, Sidonians, Hivites, and others remained in the land under God’s sovereign control.

to test all the Israelites

Israel’s response to these surrounding nations would reveal whether the people would obey the LORD’s covenant or adopt the worship and practices of the land. The test also trained a new generation to depend on God rather than presume upon the victories He had given their fathers.

who had not known any of the wars in Canaan,

Many Israelites had not witnessed Joshua’s campaigns or the LORD’s decisive victories over Canaanite kings. Without that firsthand history, they needed to learn both the cost of disobedience and the necessity of trusting God as new enemies and oppressors arose.

God left certain Canaanite nations in the land so Israel would learn the realities of defending the inheritance He had given them. Generations raised after Joshua’s campaigns had not faced the same conflicts and needed to be prepared for the hostile peoples around them.

the five rulers of the Philistines,

The Philistine city-states of Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, Ekron, and Gath occupied the coastal plain and controlled important routes between Egypt and Canaan. Their military strength made them persistent enemies of Israel in the days of the judges and later in the reigns of Saul and David.

the Sidonians,

Sidon was a leading Phoenician port city north of Israel, known for commerce, seafaring, and the spread of Canaanite worship. Its religious influence, especially devotion to Baal and Ashtoreth, later affected Israel through alliances with Phoenician rulers.

and the Hivites who lived in the mountains of Lebanon

The Hivites occupied parts of the northern highlands, including the region of Lebanon. Their presence showed that Israel’s conquest had not extended to all the territory appointed for them.

These nations were left to test the Israelites,

The remaining Canaanite peoples became a proving ground for the generation that had not experienced Joshua’s wars of conquest. Their continued presence resulted from Israel’s failure to drive them out fully, yet God used the situation to expose whether His people would remain loyal to Him amid persistent pagan influence.

to find out whether they would keep the commandments of the LORD,

Israel’s covenant obedience was tested in daily life through the temptation to adopt Canaanite worship, customs, and alliances. The issue was not whether God lacked knowledge of their hearts, but whether their conduct would reveal faithful submission to the law He had given.

Deu 6:17 You are to diligently keep the commandments of the LORD…
Deu 5:29 If only they had such a heart to fear Me…

which He had given their fathers through Moses.

The commands delivered through Moses bound each new generation to the covenant God had made with Israel at Sinai. Though the fathers had received the law, their children were responsible to obey it and preserve Israel’s distinct identity as the people of the LORD.

Psa 106:21 They forgot God their Savior, who did great things in Egypt,

and served the Baals and the Asherahs.

Israel adopted the worship of Canaanite fertility gods and goddesses, joining the religious practices of the nations they were commanded to drive out. Their idolatry violated their exclusive allegiance to the LORD and began the recurring pattern of judgment, oppression, repentance, and deliverance in Judges.

2Ki 23:4 Then the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest…

Then the anger of the LORD burned against Israel,

Israel’s idolatry and covenant rebellion provoked the holy judgment of God. Having abandoned the LORD to serve the Baals and Asherahs, the nation forfeited the protection and blessing promised through obedience.

king of Aram-naharaim,

He came from Aram-naharaim, meaning “Aram of the two rivers,” the Mesopotamian region between the Tigris and Euphrates, far to Israel’s northeast. His dominance over Israel showed the depth of Israel’s weakness after turning from the LORD.

Israel’s distress led them to seek the God they had abandoned. Their cry marked the turning point in the recurring pattern of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance that shaped this period of Israel’s history.

2Ki 13:5 So the LORD gave Israel a deliverer, and they escaped…
Oba 1:21 The deliverers will ascend Mount Zion…

The Spirit of the LORD came upon him,

God empowered Othniel for the task of delivering Israel. His ability to lead did not rest merely on natural courage or military skill, but on the LORD’s active presence and strength.

1Sa 16:13 So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him…
1Sa 10:6 Then the Spirit of the LORD will rush upon you…

and he became Israel’s judge

Othniel served as Israel’s deliverer and leader during a time of oppression. As the first judge raised up after Israel’s settlement in the land, he established the pattern of God rescuing His people through appointed leaders when they cried out to Him.

and went out to war.

Othniel led Israel against their oppressor in obedience to God’s calling. Israel’s freedom required more than a legal decision; it required the defeat of the foreign power that had subjected them.

And the LORD delivered Cushan-rishathaim king of Aram into the hand of Othniel,

The victory came from the LORD, who judged Cushan-rishathaim, whose name means “double wickedness,” and ended his rule over Israel. God remained sovereign over Israel’s enemies and acted on behalf of His covenant people.

Othniel defeated Cushan-rishathaim because God gave him the victory. Israel’s deliverance showed that the LORD could restore His people when they turned from their sin and sought His help.

Once again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD.

So He gave Eglon king of Moab power over Israel,

The LORD permitted Eglon to rule over Israel as discipline for their rebellion. Moab, east of the Dead Sea and descended from Lot, had long been a hostile neighbor. Eglon’s oppression demonstrated that God remained sovereign over Israel and the surrounding nations.

The City of Palms was Jericho, the strategic oasis near the Jordan Valley that Israel had first conquered under Joshua. Its occupation by Eglon represented a reversal of Israel’s earlier victory and gave Moab control over an important route into the land.

The Israelites served

Israel’s idolatry led to subjection under a foreign ruler. Those called to serve the Lord were placed under the authority of Moab as part of God’s discipline, continuing the pattern of sin, oppression, repentance, and deliverance in Judges.

Jer 27:12 And to Zedekiah king of Judah I spoke the same message:…

Eglon king of Moab

Eglon ruled Moab, a nation descended from Lot and often hostile toward Israel. Moab’s dominance marked a humiliating reversal for Israel, whose disobedience left the land vulnerable to its enemies.

a left-handed Benjamite,

Ehud’s unusual ability became part of God’s means of deliverance. Though Benjamin means “son of the right hand,” Ehud’s left-handedness enabled him to conceal his weapon and carry out his mission against Eglon.

So they sent him with tribute to Eglon king of Moab.

Israel’s required payment to Eglon displayed Moab’s control over them. Ehud’s assignment to carry the tribute gave him access to the Moabite king and prepared the way for Israel’s liberation.

Now Ehud had made for himself a double-edged sword

Ehud prepared a weapon for his planned meeting with Eglon, king of Moab. Its double-edged blade was suited for a quick, close-range attack, and its construction shows that Ehud acted deliberately in carrying out the task entrusted to him.

a cubit long.

At about eighteen inches in length, the sword was short enough to conceal beneath a garment while still being deadly at close range. Its size allowed Ehud to carry it unnoticed into the king’s presence.

He strapped it to his right thigh

Because Ehud was left-handed, he wore the sword on the opposite side from where guards would normally expect a weapon. This placement helped him avoid suspicion and gave him access to the sword when the moment came.

and brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab,

Israel’s subjection to Moab required payment to Eglon, a visible reminder of the nation’s political and economic bondage. Moab, east of the Dead Sea, had gained control over Israel during this period of disobedience and oppression.

who was an obese man.

Eglon’s size reflects his wealth and self-indulgence as a ruling king. It also becomes important in the events that follow, as the powerful oppressor proves vulnerable before the deliverance God provides through Ehud.

1Sa 4:18 As soon as the ark of God was mentioned, Eli fell backward…
Job 15:27 Though his face is covered with fat and his waistline bulges…
Deu 32:15 But Jeshurun grew fat and kicked—becoming fat…

After Ehud had finished presenting the tribute,

Ehud delivered Israel’s required payment to Eglon, king of Moab, a visible reminder of Moab’s domination over the nation. Such tribute represented the economic and political burden imposed on a defeated people. Having completed the public purpose of his visit, Ehud prepared to carry out the deliverance God had raised him up to accomplish.

1Ki 4:21 And Solomon reigned over all the kingdoms…

he ushered out those who had carried it.

Sending the carriers away left Ehud free to return alone to Eglon without arousing suspicion. These men had assisted in transporting the tribute and were not included in the dangerous task ahead. Ehud’s careful actions protected them while placing him in the position to confront the Moabite king.

But upon reaching the idols near Gilgal,

Ehud turned back after accompanying the tribute bearers from Jericho’s vicinity. Gilgal, near Israel’s first camp after crossing the Jordan, had become marked by images associated with pagan worship.

Alone, Ehud deliberately returned to Eglon, risking suspicion in order to carry out the deliverance God had appointed.

Mrk 7:33 So Jesus took him aside privately, away from the crowd…

Then Ehud approached him

Ehud, a left-handed Benjamite, had been raised up to deliver Israel from Moab’s oppression. Entering the king’s presence required courage and placed him in direct reliance on God’s purpose.

while he was sitting alone

Eglon was separated from his attendants in a private setting, leaving him unguarded at the decisive moment.

in the coolness of his upper room.

The upper room provided comfort, privacy, and relief from the heat. Eglon’s secure surroundings contrasted sharply with the judgment about to fall upon him.

“I have a word from God for you,”

Ehud announced a message from God, gaining the king’s attention and bringing him to rise in expectation of hearing a divine communication.

Ehud said, and the king rose from his seat.

Eglon’s response showed respect for what he believed was a message from God, while God used Ehud’s action to begin Israel’s deliverance.

1Ki 2:19 So Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him…
Est 7:7 In his fury, the king arose from drinking his wine…

And Ehud reached with his left hand,

Ehud’s left-handedness enabled him to act in a way Eglon and his attendants would not expect. As a Benjamite, he belonged to a tribe known for skilled left-handed fighters.

and plunged it into Eglon’s belly.

Ehud carried out God’s judgment on the Moabite king, whose rule had oppressed Israel for eighteen years. His act marked the beginning of Israel’s deliverance from Moab.

Jdg 9:54 He quickly called his armor-bearer, saying…

Then Ehud went out through the porch,

After killing Eglon in the upper room, Ehud left by the adjoining passage of the king’s private quarters. His escape was deliberate and carefully timed, allowing him to depart without immediately alerting the attendants.

By securing and locking the upper room, a place of privacy and security, Ehud delayed the servants’ discovery of Eglon’s death. They assumed the king wished to remain alone, giving Ehud time to flee and summon Israel for the overthrow of Moab’s rule.

Ehud had locked the private chamber, concealing Eglon’s death long enough to make his escape and return to Israel.

Act 12:13-16 He knocked at the outer gate, and a servant girl named Rhoda…

“He must be relieving himself in the cool room,” they said.

Assuming Eglon wanted privacy, the servants waited outside. Their mistaken conclusion gave Ehud the time needed to reach safety and gather Israel for battle.

1Sa 24:3-4 Soon Saul came to the sheepfolds along the road, …
Amo 3:15 I will tear down the winter house along with the summer house…

So they waited until they became worried

Eglon’s servants respected the privacy of the locked upper room and assumed he was occupied. As the delay continued, their patience gave way to concern, while Ehud had already escaped.

Ehud, however, had escaped while the servants waited.

The servants’ hesitation gave Ehud time to leave the upper room and flee before Eglon’s death was discovered. God used Ehud’s careful planning and the servants’ delay to preserve the deliverer He had raised up for Israel.

He passed by the idols

Ehud traveled past the carved images near Gilgal, a reminder of the idolatry surrounding Israel in the land. He did not turn aside from his purpose but continued toward the hill country.

and escaped to Seirah.

Seirah provided a place of safety from which Ehud could gather the Israelites for the coming battle against Moab. His escape prepared the way for Israel’s deliverance from Eglon’s oppression.

Ehud summoned the Israelites from the hill country of Ephraim after killing Eglon, king of Moab. As Israel’s judge and deliverer, he led them against the oppressors who had ruled Israel for eighteen years.

1Sa 14:12 So the men of the outpost called out to Jonathan and…
2Ki 6:19 And Elisha told them, “This is not the way,…
Mat 4:19 “Come, follow Me,” Jesus said, “and I will make…

“for the LORD has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand.”

Ehud credited the coming victory to the LORD, not to Israel’s strength. God had raised him up to break Moab’s control over His people.

Jos 10:8 The LORD said to Joshua, “Do not be afraid of them.”…

So they followed him down

The Israelites responded to Ehud’s call and moved from the hill country toward the Jordan Valley to confront the Moabite forces.

2Ki 2:6 And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here,…

and seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab,

By taking the crossing places, they blocked the Moabites’ route back across the Jordan, a symbol of transitions and new beginnings, into their homeland.

and they did not allow anyone to cross over.

Israel’s control of the fords prevented escape and secured their victory over Moab.

At that time

they struck down about ten thousand Moabites,

Israel’s victory broke Moab’s control over the land. The Moabites, who lived east of the Dead Sea, had oppressed Israel for eighteen years.

2Ki 3:24-25 But when the Moabites came to the camp of Israel,…

all robust and valiant men.

The defeated force consisted of capable fighting men, underscoring the strength of the Moabite army and the completeness of Israel’s deliverance.

2Ki 24:14 He carried into exile all Jerusalem—all the commanders…
2Ki 24:16 The king of Babylon also brought into exile…
1Sa 14:52 And the war with the Philistines was fierce…

Not one of them escaped.

The Moabite force at the crossings was decisively destroyed, preventing reinforcements or survivors from returning across the Jordan.

2Ch 20:24 When the men of Judah came to a place…
Psa 106:11 The waters covered their foes; not one of them remained.
Exo 14:28 The waters flowed back and covered the chariots and horsemen…

So Moab was subdued under the hand of Israel that day,

God’s deliverance through Ehud brought Moab’s eighteen-year oppression of Israel to an end. Moab, located east of the Dead Sea, had exercised control over Israel until the Lord gave Israel victory. Israel’s dominion over Moab marked a decisive reversal, restoring the nation’s security and freedom.

2Sa 8:2 David also defeated the Moabites, made them lie down…
1Ch 18:2 David also defeated the Moabites, and they became subject…

and the land had rest for eighty years.

Israel enjoyed an unusually long period of peace after Moab’s defeat. The eighty years of rest reflected the completeness of the deliverance and allowed the nation to live free from foreign rule until later disobedience again brought oppression.

Jos 11:23 So Joshua took the entire land, as the LORD had spoken…
Jos 21:44 And the LORD gave them rest on every side,…

Shamgar

After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath.

Following Ehud’s deliverance from Moab, Israel still faced threats from surrounding enemies. Shamgar appears briefly among Israel’s judges, raised up during a troubled period to defend the people.

Jdg 2:18 Whenever the LORD raised up a judge for the Israelites,…
Jdg 2:16 Then the LORD raised up judges, who saved them…
1Sa 12:11 So the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel…

And he too saved Israel,

Like the other judges, Shamgar served as an instrument of God’s deliverance when Israel was oppressed. His brief account confirms that God continued to preserve His people amid recurring conflict.

Exo 14:30 That day the LORD saved Israel from the Egyptians…
2Ki 13:5 So the LORD gave Israel a deliverer, and they escaped…
Neh 9:27 So You delivered them into the hands of enemies…

striking down six hundred Philistines

The Philistines were a persistent and powerful enemy along Israel’s western border. Shamgar’s defeat of six hundred of them was an extraordinary victory against a formidable force.

Jdg 16:30 Samson said, “Let me die with the Philistines.”…
Jdg 15:15 He found the fresh jawbone of a donkey…
1Sa 14:13-14 So Jonathan climbed up on his hands and feet,…

with an oxgoad.

An oxgoad was a long, pointed farming implement used to direct oxen, indicating Shamgar’s humble status as a farmer. Armed with an ordinary tool rather than a soldier’s weapon, Shamgar overcame the Philistines, showing that Israel’s deliverance depended on God rather than military strength.

Act 26:14 We all fell to the ground, and I heard a voice say to me…
Ecc 12:11 The words of the wise are like goads…
1Ki 19:19 So Elijah departed and found Elisha son of Shaphat.…
