Judging Others

“Do not judge,

Jesus forbids the self-righteous condemnation of others, especially when it ignores one’s own sin. He does not prohibit discernment or the recognition of evil, but condemns the hypocritical judgment that assumes God’s authority over another person’s heart and standing before Him. The Greek word krinō, “judge,” can mean to separate, distinguish, or decide.

Luk 6:37 Do not judge, and you will not be judged.…
Jas 4:11-12 Brothers, do not slander one another…
1Co 4:5 Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time;…

or you will be judged.

Those who judge harshly invite the same standard upon themselves. God judges with perfect justice, exposing hypocrisy and holding each person accountable for the mercy or severity shown to others.

Rom 2:1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment…
Rom 14:10-12 Why, then, do you judge your brother? Or why…
2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,…

For with the same judgment you pronounce,

Jesus warns against a fault-finding spirit that condemns others while ignoring one’s own sin. His hearers knew that righteous judgment required fairness and impartiality, not hypocrisy or personal hostility.

Rom 2:1-3 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment…
Luk 19:22 His master replied, ‘You wicked servant, I will judge you…
Jas 2:13 For judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone…

you will be judged,

God alone judges with perfect knowledge and justice. Those who impose harsh, merciless standards on others invite the same scrutiny of their own conduct before Him.

2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,…
Heb 9:27 Just as man is appointed to die once, and after that…

and with the measure you use,

Pro 20:10 Differing weights and unequal measures—both are detestable…
Lev 19:35-36 You must not use dishonest measures of length, weight,…

God’s judgment is righteous and fitting. Mercy, fairness, and humility toward others do not excuse sin, but they reflect an awareness that all people stand accountable before the Lord.

Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye

Jesus exposes the tendency to notice small faults in others while overlooking personal sin. His illustration calls for honest self-examination rather than a critical spirit toward fellow believers.

Luk 6:41-42 Why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye…
Rom 14:10-13 Why, then, do you judge your brother? Or why…
Jas 4:11-12 Brothers, do not slander one another…

but fail to notice the beam in your own eye?

The contrast between a speck and a beam reveals the hypocrisy of condemning another while ignoring more serious sin in one’s own life. Before seeking to correct others, a person must first deal truthfully with his own guilt and pursue obedience to God.

2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith;…
1Co 11:28 Each one must examine himself before he eats…
Lam 3:40 Let us examine and test our ways, and turn back to the LORD.

How can you say to your brother,

Jesus confronts the hypocrisy of judging a fellow believer while overlooking personal sin. The close relationship implied by “brother” makes such pride especially serious, since correction should arise from humility and genuine concern.

Luk 6:42 How can you say, ‘Brother, let me take the speck’…
Rom 14:10 Why, then, do you judge your brother? Or why…
Jas 4:11 Brothers, do not slander one another…

‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’

The speck pictures a small fault that may need correction. Yet the offer to help becomes presumptuous when the one giving correction has not honestly faced his own sin.

Gal 6:1 Brothers, if someone is caught in a trespass,…
Jas 5:19-20 My brothers, if one of you should wander…
Pro 27:6 The wounds of a friend are faithful, but…

while there is still a beam in your own eye?

The beam represents a far greater and more obvious fault. Jesus uses deliberate exaggeration to expose the blindness of self-righteous judgment: a person cannot rightly help another see clearly while refusing to deal with serious sin in his own life.

Rom 2:21-24 you, then, who teach others,…
Pro 30:12 There is a generation of those who are pure…
Psa 36:2 For his eyes are too full of conceit to detect or hate…

You hypocrite!

Jesus rebukes the person who condemns another while refusing to face his own sin. Religious appearance or knowledge does not excuse a heart unwilling to repent.

Mrk 7:6 Jesus answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly…”…
Rom 2:1 You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment…
Tit 1:16 They profess to know God, but by their actions…

First take the beam out of your own eye,

The beam pictures a serious and obvious fault. Honest self-examination must come before correcting someone else.

Luk 6:42 How can you say, ‘Brother, let me take the speck’…
Psa 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me…
Gal 6:1 Brothers, if someone is caught in a trespass,…

and then you will see clearly

Repentance brings clearer judgment, enabling a person to discern matters without pride or double standards.

2Pe 1:9 But whoever lacks these traits is nearsighted,…

to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

The speck represents a lesser fault in another believer. Jesus does not forbid loving correction, but requires that it be offered humbly by one who has first dealt with his own sin.

Jas 5:19-20 My brothers, if one of you should wander…
Jud 1:22-23 And indeed, have mercy on those who doubt;…

Do not give dogs what is holy;

Dogs in the ancient world commonly roamed as scavengers and were regarded as unclean. What was holy belonged to God and was not to be treated as common. Jesus warns against placing sacred truth before those determined to despise it.

Lev 22:10-16 No one outside a priest’s family may eat the offering,…

Hostility toward the message can become hostility toward the messenger. Jesus does not forbid proclaiming the gospel, but commands wisdom in dealing with those who persistently reject and attack what is holy.

Ask, Seek, Knock

Ask, and it will be given to you;

Jesus directs His disciples to bring their needs before God with confidence in the Father’s care. Prayer expresses dependence on God, who gives what is good to His children.

Jhn 16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in My name.…
Jhn 14:13 And I will do whatever you ask in My name…
Jas 1:5 Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God,…

seek, and you will find;

Seeking calls for an earnest pursuit of God’s will, righteousness, and wisdom. It involves more than a passing request, marking a life turned toward God in faith and obedience.

Jer 29:13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me…
Isa 55:6 Seek the LORD while He may be found; call on Him…
Heb 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God.…

knock, and the door will be opened to you.

Knocking portrays continued, personal appeal for entrance and welcome. In a culture where the doorway marked access to a household and its fellowship, the open door pictures God’s readiness to receive those who come to Him.

Luk 11:9-10 So I tell you: Ask, and it will be given to you;…
Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock…
Act 12:13-16 He knocked at the outer gate, and a servant girl named Rhoda…

For everyone who asks receives;

God welcomes all who come to Him in faith, acknowledging their need and trusting His goodness. Jesus assures His disciples that the Father is neither unwilling nor indifferent to their prayers.

Jhn 16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in My name.…
Mat 21:22 If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask…
Jas 1:5 Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God,…

he who seeks finds;

Those who earnestly pursue God’s will and righteousness are not left without direction. God makes Himself known to those who seek Him with a sincere heart.

Jer 29:13 You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me…
Pro 8:17 I love those who love me, and those who seek me…
Heb 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God.…

and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

Continued dependence on God is met with His response in His wisdom and purpose. The opened door pictures access to the Father and the provision He gives to those who come to Him faithfully.

Luk 11:9-10 So I tell you: Ask, and it will be given to you;…
Rev 3:20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock…
Act 12:13-16 He knocked at the outer gate, and a servant girl named Rhoda…

Which of you,

Jesus draws on ordinary family life to engage His hearers personally. Parents in the crowd understood the responsibility of caring for their children and meeting genuine needs.

Jas 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above…
Psa 103:13 As a father has compassion on his children…
Rom 8:32 He who did not spare His own Son but gave Him up…

if his son asks for bread,

Bread was a daily necessity in Israel and represented basic provision. A child asking his father for food made a normal and rightful request.

Psa 37:25 I once was young and now am old, yet never have I seen…

will give him a stone?

No caring father would answer hunger with something useless. The contrast prepares Jesus’ teaching that the Father in heaven gives what is good to those who ask Him.

Luk 11:12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
Mat 4:3 The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God…
Isa 8:14 And He will be a sanctuary—but to both houses of Israel…

Or if he asks for a fish,

Fish were a common source of food in Galilee, so the request represents an ordinary need a child would bring to his father.

Psa 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and a shield;…
Jas 1:17 Every good and perfect gift is from above…

will give him a snake?

No caring father would replace needed food with something unclean and harmful. Jesus argues from the faithfulness of earthly fathers to the greater goodness of the Father in heaven, who does not deceive His children or answer their requests with evil.

Luk 11:12 Or if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion?
Num 21:6 So the LORD sent venomous snakes among the people…
Gen 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field…

So if you who are evil

give good things to those who ask Him!

God invites His people to bring their needs before Him with confidence. He gives what is truly good according to His wisdom, even when His answer differs from what they expected.

Jas 1:5 Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God,…

1Th 5:15 Make sure that no one repays evil for evil.…

For this is the essence of the Law and the Prophets.

Jesus identifies this principle as a summary of Scripture’s moral teaching. It expresses the righteous love toward others that God has required throughout His revelation.

Rom 13:8-10 Be indebted to no one, except to one another in love.…
Gal 5:14 The entire law is fulfilled in a single decree:…

The Narrow Gate

Enter through the narrow gate.

Jesus calls for a deliberate response to God’s way of salvation. The narrow gate represents entrance into life through Christ, requiring repentance, faith, and submission to His authority. Discipleship is not a casual association with religious activity but a commitment to follow Him in obedience.

Luk 13:24 “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door.”…
Jhn 10:9 I am the gate. If anyone enters through Me, he will…
Isa 35:8 And there will be a highway called the Way of Holiness.…

For wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction,

The broad way is the course of self-will, sin, and false religion. It offers ease and acceptance because it does not require repentance or obedience to God. Its end is destruction: final judgment and separation from God.

Pro 16:25 There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end…
Php 3:19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly,…

and many enter through it.

Many choose the path that agrees with human desires and the prevailing values of the world. Jesus warns that popularity is not evidence of truth, and His followers must remain faithful even when the way of life is difficult and unpopular.

Exo 23:2 You shall not follow the crowd in wrongdoing.…
2Ti 4:3-4 For the time will come when men will not tolerate…

But small is the gate

Entrance into God’s kingdom is not gained by drifting with the crowd or merely claiming religious allegiance. The gate is small because it requires repentance, faith in Christ, and submission to God’s rule.

and narrow the way

The way of Christ is marked by obedience, self-denial, and perseverance. It does not permit a person to retain a life of deliberate sin while refusing the authority of Jesus.

A Tree and Its Fruit

Beware of false prophets.

Jesus warns His disciples that not everyone who claims to speak for God truly represents Him. Israel had long suffered under men who claimed divine authority while contradicting God’s revealed word and leading the people into sin. The early church would face the same danger through teachers who introduced destructive errors among believers.

Deu 13:1-3 If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you…
1Jn 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test…
Jer 23:16 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Do not listen…

They come to you in sheep’s clothing,

False prophets often present themselves as trustworthy servants of God. Their appearance, words, and religious manner may resemble genuine faithfulness, allowing them to gain acceptance among God’s people.

2Co 11:13-15 For such men are false apostles, deceitful workers…
2Ti 3:5 having a form of godliness but denying its power.…
Jud 1:4 For certain men have crept in among you unnoticed—…

but inwardly they are ravenous wolves.

Beneath the outward disguise is a destructive purpose. Like wolves attacking a flock, false teachers exploit, scatter, and harm those entrusted to their influence. Their true character is revealed not by appearance but by whether their teaching and conduct agree with God’s truth.

Act 20:29-30 I know that after my departure, savage wolves will come…
Ezk 22:27 Her officials within her are like wolves tearing their prey…
Jhn 10:12 The hired hand is not the shepherd, and the sheep…

By their fruit you will recognize them.

Spiritual leaders are known by the visible results of their teaching, conduct, and influence. Genuine faith produces obedience to God and character consistent with His truth, while false prophets eventually reveal themselves through corrupt doctrine and ungodly lives.

Luk 6:43-45 No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree…
Mat 12:33 Make a tree good and its fruit will be good,…
Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…

Are grapes gathered from thornbushes,

Grapes were a familiar sign of provision and blessing in Israel. No one expected a thornbush, associated with the curse and barren ground, to yield a valuable crop. In the same way, evil hearts and false teaching do not produce righteous outcomes.

Luk 6:44 For each tree is known by its own fruit.…
Isa 5:4 What more could have been done for My vineyard…
Jer 8:13 I will take away their harvest, declares the LORD.…

or figs from thistles?

Figs represented security, abundance, and well-being, but thistles belonged to uncultivated and cursed land. The contrast makes clear that a person’s nature is shown over time by what his life produces.

Jas 3:12 My brothers, can a fig tree grow olives…
Gen 3:18 Both thorns and thistles it will yield for you,…
Heb 6:8 But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless,…

Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit,

A healthy tree produces according to its nature. Jesus uses familiar agricultural imagery to show that a person’s life reveals the condition of the heart. Genuine faith and obedience to God result in conduct consistent with righteousness.

Luk 6:43 No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree…
Mat 12:33 Make a tree good and its fruit will be good,…
Jhn 15:5 I am the vine and you are the branches…

but a bad tree bears bad fruit.

A diseased tree cannot consistently produce sound fruit, and corrupt hearts produce corrupt deeds. The warning concerns false prophets who may appear outwardly trustworthy but are exposed by their character, teaching, and effects on others.

Mat 3:10 The axe lies ready at the root of the trees,…
Luk 3:9 The axe lies ready at the root of the trees,…
Jhn 15:6 If anyone does not remain in Me, he is like a branch…

A good tree cannot bear bad fruit,

A healthy tree produces according to its nature. In the same way, a life changed by God will increasingly display obedience, truth, and righteousness. Jesus directs attention beyond outward appearances to the condition of the heart.

Luk 6:43-44 No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree…
Mat 12:33 Make a tree good and its fruit will be good,…
Jhn 15:5 I am the vine and you are the branches…

and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.

A diseased tree may have leaves and outward form, but its fruit exposes its condition. False prophets and hypocrites may appear religious, yet their conduct reveals whether they are guided by God or driven by sin. Genuine spiritual fruit comes from a heart renewed through faith in Christ.

Mat 12:35 The good man brings good things out of his good store…
Jas 3:12 My brothers, can a fig tree grow olives…
1Jn 3:10 By this the children of God are distinguished…

Every tree that does not bear good fruit

Trees portray people whose lives reveal their true character. Jesus warns that genuine faith produces righteous conduct, while false prophets and empty professions eventually show their lack of spiritual life.

Luk 3:9 The axe lies ready at the root of the trees,…
Mat 12:33-35 Make a tree good and its fruit will be good,…
Luk 6:43-44 No good tree bears bad fruit, nor does a bad tree…

is cut down

The image reflects the removal of a barren tree from an orchard. God’s judgment falls upon those who persist in unbelief and rebellion despite the opportunity to repent.

Mat 3:10 The axe lies ready at the root of the trees,…
Dan 4:14 He called out in a loud voice: ‘Cut down the tree.…
Isa 10:33-34 Behold, the Lord GOD of Hosts will lop off the branches…

and thrown into the fire.

Fire depicts final judgment. Those who remain without the fruit of genuine faith face condemnation and permanent separation from God.

Ezk 15:4-7 No, it is cast into the fire for fuel. The fire…
Mal 4:1 “For behold, the day is coming, burning like a furnace,”…

So then,

Jesus draws His warning about false prophets to its practical conclusion. Outward claims of faith or religious authority must be tested against the pattern of a person’s life and teaching.

Rom 2:6 God “will repay each one according to his deeds.”
Gal 6:7 Do not be deceived: God is not to be mocked.…
2Co 5:10 For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ,…

by their fruit

Fruit represents the observable results produced by a person’s character, beliefs, and conduct. A sound tree bears healthy fruit; likewise, one who truly follows God will display conduct consistent with His truth.

Mat 12:33-35 Make a tree good and its fruit will be good,…
Jhn 15:8 This is to My Father’s glory, that you bear much fruit…
Gal 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…

you will recognize them.

False prophets may appear trustworthy, but their message, moral life, and influence eventually reveal their true nature. Believers are called to exercise careful discernment rather than accept every spiritual claim.

Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’

Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount by calling His disciples and the crowds to receive His teaching as the authoritative word of the Son of God. Hearing involves understanding and accepting what He has taught.

Jhn 10:27 My sheep listen to My voice; I know them…
Jhn 8:47 Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God.…

and acts on them

True hearing is shown through obedience. Jesus does not separate belief from a life shaped by His commands.

is like a wise man

Wisdom is demonstrated by recognizing what is true and ordering one’s life accordingly. The wise person exercises discernment before hardship comes.

who built his house on the rock.

The rock pictures a secure foundation able to withstand storms and floods. A life grounded in Christ’s teaching will endure testing because it rests on what is unchanging and true.

But everyone who hears these words of Mine

Jesus addresses all who have received the instruction of the Sermon on the Mount. His words reveal God’s standard for life in His kingdom and call for a response from both the disciples and the crowds.

Hearing Jesus without obedience leaves His teaching without its intended effect. Genuine submission to Him is shown in a life shaped by what He commands, reflecting Shema: to hear and obey.

who built his house on sand.

In Palestine, dry streambeds and sandy ground could appear safe until seasonal rains brought floods. A house built there had no secure base and would collapse under pressure. So a life that rejects Christ’s words has no lasting foundation when judgment and trial come.

The rain fell,

This phrase signifies the trials and challenges that come in life. In biblical times, rain was both a blessing and a potential threat, as it was necessary for agriculture but could also lead to destructive floods. The imagery of rain falling is often used in Scripture to represent divine judgment or testing. It emphasizes the inevitability of life's difficulties and the need for a strong foundation.

Gen 7:12 And the rain fell upon the earth for forty days…
Ezk 13:11 tell those whitewashing the wall that it will fall.…

the torrents raged,

“The torrents raged” portrays the force of sudden floods, emphasizing the severe testing that exposes whether a person’s life is built on obedience to Jesus’ words.

Psa 18:4 The cords of death encompassed me; the torrents of chaos…
Psa 124:4-5 then the floods would have engulfed us, then the torrent…

and the winds blew

“And the winds blew” portrays the full force of storms common in the land, where heavy rains could turn dry channels into destructive floods.

Psa 107:25 For He spoke and raised a tempest that lifted…
Mrk 4:37 Soon a violent windstorm came up, and the waves…

and beat against that house,

“Beat against that house” portrays relentless pressure striking a structure built without a secure foundation.

Job 1:19 when suddenly a mighty wind swept in from the desert…
Ezk 13:13-15 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…

and it fell—

“And it fell” emphasizes the complete collapse of the foolish builder’s house when the storm came, illustrating the ultimate failure of a life that hears Jesus’ words but does not obey them.

Ezk 13:14 I will tear down the wall you whitewashed…
Isa 30:13-14 This iniquity of yours is like a breach about to fail…

It emphasizes the total ruin that results when a life is not founded on Christ and His teaching.

The Authority of Jesus

When Jesus had finished saying these things,

Jesus brought the Sermon on the Mount to its close, having set forth the righteousness, faith, prayer, and obedience that characterize life under God’s reign. Matthew’s repeated use of this conclusion marks the completion of a major body of Jesus’ instruction.

the crowds were astonished

Those who heard Him recognized that His words carried unusual weight and clarity. His teaching exposed the inadequacy of outward religion and called for righteousness that begins in the heart.

at His teaching,

Jesus did not merely repeat established interpretations or appeal to earlier authorities. He spoke as the One who rightly explained God’s will, confronting sin, correcting false assumptions, and declaring the way of life in the kingdom of heaven.

because He taught as one who had authority,

Jesus spoke without relying on the opinions of earlier rabbis to establish His message. His teaching carried the authority of the Son of God, who revealed the Father’s will and proclaimed the truth directly.

and not as their scribes.

The scribes were trained interpreters of the Law who commonly appealed to established traditions and authorities. Jesus stood apart from them because He spoke with divine certainty, exposing error and calling His hearers to genuine righteousness.
