Romans 15

Accept One Another

We who are strong

“We who are strong” refers to believers whose faith is settled in the liberty Christ provides, particularly regarding disputed practices such as food and special days. Their maturity is shown not by independence from others but by the responsible use of freedom for the good of those who are weaker in faith.

Rom 14:1 Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment…
1Co 8:9 Be careful, however, that your freedom does not…
Gal 6:1 Brothers, if someone is caught in a trespass,…

ought to bear with the shortcomings of the weak

Mature believers have a moral duty to patiently support those whose consciences remain troubled by matters Scripture does not forbid. Rather than pressuring or dismissing them, the strong should help bear their shortcomings—areas of limited understanding or confidence—so they may grow without spiritual harm, reflecting Christ’s patience and love.

Rom 14:13 Therefore let us stop judging one another.…
1Co 8:11 So this weak brother, for whom Christ died,…
Gal 6:2 Carry one another’s burdens, and in this way…

and not to please ourselves.

Christian liberty is not to be used for personal preference at the expense of fellow believers. The good of the church, its peace, and the spiritual welfare of others must take priority over self-interest.

1Co 10:24 No one should seek his own good, but the good of others.
1Co 10:33 I also try to please everyone in all I do…
Php 2:4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests,…

Each of us

Every believer bears responsibility for the spiritual well-being of others in the church. Jewish and Gentile Christians alike were called to live in unity rather than insist on personal preferences.

Php 2:4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests,…
2Co 5:15 And He died for all, that those who live…

should please his neighbor

Believers are to consider the needs of fellow Christians, setting aside self-interest when necessary. Such concern reflects the love and service Christ showed toward others.

1Co 10:33 I also try to please everyone in all I do…
Rom 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love.…

for his good,

The aim is not mere agreement or personal comfort, but the genuine welfare of another person, especially his growth in faith and obedience.

1Co 10:24 No one should seek his own good, but the good of others.
Gal 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good…

to build him up.

Christian liberty must be used to strengthen the church. Each member contributes to the stability and maturity of the whole body by encouraging others toward faithfulness.

1Th 5:11 Therefore encourage and build one another up…
2Co 13:10 This is why I write these things while absent,…

For even Christ did not please Himself,

Jesus lived in willing obedience to the Father and gave Himself for the good of others. His ministry was marked by service, humility, and sacrifice rather than self-interest, setting the pattern for believers to bear with one another.

Jhn 5:30 I can do nothing by Myself; I judge only as I hear. And My judgment is just,…
Php 2:5-8 Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus:…

but as it is written:

Paul grounds Christ’s example in Scripture, showing that His rejection and suffering fulfilled God’s revealed purpose.

Jhn 10:35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—…

“The insults of those who insult You have fallen on Me.”

Drawn from Psalm 69, these words portray the righteous sufferer bearing reproach directed against God. Christ received the hostility of those who rejected the Father, enduring shame and suffering in the work of redemption.

Psa 69:9 because zeal for Your house has consumed me,…
Psa 69:7 For I have endured scorn for Your sake,……
Psa 69:20 Insults have broken my heart, and I am in despair.…

For everything that was written in the past

The Old Testament Scriptures—Law, Prophets, and Writings—record God’s dealings with Israel, His covenant promises, and His work in history. Preserved and read in the Jewish community, they revealed God’s holiness, faithfulness, judgment, and mercy while preparing for the coming Messiah.

1Co 10:11 Now these things happened to them as examples…
1Co 9:10 they should also expect to share in the harvest.…

was written for our instruction,

These writings teach God’s people how He acts, what He requires, and the consequences of faithfulness or rebellion. Israel’s history, the lives of its leaders, and the words of the prophets instruct believers in truth, wisdom, obedience, and trust in God, in keeping with the Torah, meaning instruction or teaching.

2Ti 3:16-17 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for instruction,…
Psa 78:5-7 For He established a testimony in Jacob,…

so that through endurance

Scripture records those who remained faithful through suffering, delay, opposition, and loss. Job endured affliction, Moses led Israel through hardship, and the prophets served amid rejection. Their accounts show that God sustains His people and fulfills His purposes in His time.

Jas 1:3-4 because you know that the testing of your faith…
Heb 10:36 You need to persevere, so that after you have done…

and the encouragement of the Scriptures,

God’s promises, acts of deliverance, and assurances of future restoration strengthen those who face trouble. The Scriptures testify that the Lord does not abandon His people and that His rule over history remains certain.

Psa 119:50 This is my comfort in affliction, that Your promise…
Psa 119:76 May Your loving devotion comfort me, I pray,…

we might have hope.

Christian hope rests on God’s trustworthy promises, fulfilled in Christ and awaiting final completion at His return. It gives believers confidence that sin, death, and suffering will not have the final word.

Psa 119:49 Remember Your word to Your servant, upon which…
Heb 6:19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul,…

Now may the God who gives endurance and encouragement

God supplies the strength and consolation believers need to remain faithful through suffering, disagreement, and pressure. The Roman churches included Jewish and Gentile Christians whose differing backgrounds could strain fellowship.

2Th 2:16-17 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father,…
2Co 1:3-4 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,…
Rom 5:3-5 Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings,…

grant you harmony with one another

Paul asks God to produce a shared mind among them, not merely outward peace. Their unity was necessary for the church to bear a faithful witness and to receive one another as Christ had received them.

Rom 12:16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud.…
Php 2:2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded,…
Eph 4:3 and with diligence to preserve the unity…

Their harmony rests on their common union with Christ. He has made believers from every background part of one body, giving them a new identity and a common pattern of humble service.

1Co 1:30 It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus…
Eph 2:14-16 For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one…

so that with one mind and one voice

Paul calls Jewish and Gentile believers in Rome to live in harmony despite differences in background, conscience, and custom. Their unity rests on Christ and allows the church to stand together as one body.

Php 2:2 then make my joy complete by being like-minded,…
1Co 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord…
2Ch 5:13 The trumpeters and singers joined together to praise…

United worship directs praise to God for His faithfulness, mercy, and saving work. Division among believers weakens the church’s witness, while shared devotion displays the work of Christ among them.

1Pe 4:11 If anyone speaks, he should speak as one…
Mat 5:16 In the same way, let your light shine before men,…

the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

God the Father is eternally related to Jesus Christ, His Son. Through Christ, believers are brought into God’s family and join in honoring the Father who has provided salvation.

Heb 2:11 For both the One who sanctifies and those who are sanctified…
Eph 2:13-14 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away…

Such unity displays God’s faithfulness and reveals His purpose in forming one people in Christ.

For I tell you that Christ has become a servant of the circumcised

Jesus came first to Israel, the people marked by circumcision under God’s covenant with Abraham. He served them by fulfilling the Law, proclaiming the kingdom, and bearing the role of the promised Messiah. His ministry among the Jews demonstrated God’s faithfulness to the nation from which salvation would come.

In Christ, God’s truth was made known without contradiction or change. His words, works, death, and resurrection revealed the reliability of God’s character and the certainty of His saving purpose.

to confirm the promises made to the patriarchs,

God had promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob a chosen people, a land, a royal line, and blessing for all nations through their offspring. Jesus, descended from Abraham and David, fulfilled these covenant promises and established the basis by which the nations also receive God’s mercy.

Gal 3:16 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.…
Luk 1:72-73 to show mercy to our fathers and to remember…
Act 13:32-33 And now we proclaim to you the good news:…

so that the Gentiles may glorify God for His mercy.

God’s saving purpose extends beyond Israel to the nations. Through Christ, Gentiles who stood outside Israel’s covenant privileges are brought into the people of God and join in praising Him for undeserved mercy. This fulfills God’s promise that blessing would reach all nations through Abraham’s seed.

Psa 117:1-2 Praise the LORD, all you nations! Extol Him…
Rom 11:30-32 Just as you who formerly disobeyed God have received mercy…
1Pe 2:10 Once you were not a people, but now you are the people…

As it is written:

Paul supports this truth from the Scriptures, showing that the gathering of the Gentiles was not a departure from God’s plan but part of His revealed purpose from the beginning.

Rom 3:4 Certainly not! Let God be true and every man a liar.…
Mat 4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not…”…
1Co 1:19 For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;…

“Therefore I will praise You among the Gentiles;

The words come from David’s song of thanksgiving after God delivered him from his enemies. Paul applies David’s praise to Christ, the greater Son of David, whose salvation brings the worship of God among the nations.

Psa 18:49 Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations;…
2Sa 22:50 Therefore I will praise You, O LORD, among the nations;…
Psa 57:9 I will praise You, O Lord, among the nations;…

I will sing hymns to Your name.”

Gentile believers are not merely recipients of blessing; they become worshipers of the God of Israel. Their praise declares God’s faithfulness, mercy, and saving power.

Psa 92:1 A Psalm. A song for the Sabbath day. It is good to praise…
Psa 9:2 I will be glad and rejoice in You; I will sing praise……
Psa 7:17 I will thank the LORD for His righteousness…

Again, it says:

Paul adds another Old Testament witness to show that God’s purpose always included the nations alongside Israel.

Psa 117:1 Praise the LORD, all you nations! Extol Him…
Isa 11:10 On that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner…
Isa 49:6 “It is not enough for You to be My Servant,”…

“Rejoice, O Gentiles,

Gentiles are called to share in the joy of God’s salvation through the Messiah, not as outsiders but as recipients of His mercy.

Deu 32:43 Rejoice, O heavens, with Him, and let all God's angels…
Psa 67:4 Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,…
Isa 42:10-12 Sing to the LORD a new song—His praise…

with His people.”

Israel remains God’s covenant people, yet Gentile believers are joined with them in worship and blessing through Christ, forming one people of God without distinction in salvation.

Isa 56:6-8 And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD…
Eph 2:14-19 For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one…
Zec 2:11 On that day many nations will join themselves to the LORD,…

And again:

Paul adds another Old Testament witness showing that Gentiles were always included in God’s purpose.

Heb 1:5 For to which of the angels did God ever say:…
Heb 2:13 And again: “I will put My trust in Him.”…
Heb 4:5 And again, as He says in the passage above: ……

“Praise the Lord,

God alone is worthy of worship and honor.

Psa 117:1 Praise the LORD, all you nations! Extol Him…
Psa 113:1 Hallelujah! Give praise, O servants of the LORD…
Psa 148:1 Hallelujah! Praise the LORD from the heavens;…

all you Gentiles,

The nations outside Israel are called to join in praising the Lord, not remain distant from His salvation.

Isa 11:10 On that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner…
Isa 42:6 I, the LORD, have called you for a righteous purpose,…
Isa 49:6 “It is not enough for You to be My Servant,”…

and extol Him,

Their response is to be open and wholehearted worship, extolling God with enthusiastic praise.

Psa 107:32 Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people…
Psa 34:3 Magnify the LORD with me; let us exalt His name together.
Psa 99:5 Exalt the LORD our God, and worship at His footstool…

all you peoples.”

God’s saving work reaches every nation, bringing Jews and Gentiles together in praise of the same Lord.

Psa 67:3 Let the peoples praise You, O God; let all the peoples…
Psa 66:4 All the earth bows down to You; they sing praise to You;…
Psa 86:9 All the nations You have made will come and bow before You…

And once more, Isaiah says:

Paul cites Isaiah to show that the inclusion of the Gentiles was always part of God’s revealed plan.

Isa 49:6 “It is not enough for You to be My Servant,”…
Act 13:47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us:…
Mat 12:18-20 Here is My Servant, whom I have chosen…

“The Root of Jesse will appear,

Jesus Christ came from the family line of Jesse through David. Though David’s royal house had declined, God raised up the promised King from that line.

Isa 11:10 On that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner…
Isa 11:1 Then a shoot will spring up from the stump of Jesse…
Rev 22:16 I, Jesus, have sent My angel to give you this testimony…

One who will arise to rule over the Gentiles;

Christ’s authority extends over every nation, not Israel alone. His kingdom gathers people from all peoples under His righteous rule.

Gen 49:10 The scepter will not depart from Judah, nor the staff…
Psa 72:11 May all kings bow down to him and all nations serve him.
Psa 2:8 Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance,…

in Him the Gentiles will put their hope.”

Gentiles receive the same hope of salvation promised through the Messiah. Their faith in Christ confirms God’s purpose to bring blessing to the nations through the descendant of David.

Mat 12:21 In His name the nations will put their hope.”
Isa 42:4 He will not grow weak or discouraged before He has…
Eph 2:12-13 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ,…

Now may the God of hope

Paul closes his appeal for unity between Jewish and Gentile believers by directing them to God, whose promises give His people certain hope.

Psa 71:5 For You are my hope, O Lord GOD, my confidence…
Jer 14:8 O Hope of Israel, its Savior in times of distress,…

Paul the Minister to the Gentiles

I myself am convinced,

Paul writes with confidence born of his awareness of the Roman church’s faith and reputation. Though he had not established the congregation, he regarded its believers with apostolic concern and trusted the work God had done among them.

2Th 3:4 And we have confidence in the Lord that you…
Gal 5:10 I am confident in the Lord that you will…
2Co 7:16 I rejoice that I can have complete confidence in you.

my brothers,

Paul addresses them as fellow members of God’s family. Jewish and Gentile believers alike stood together in Christ, bound by a shared faith rather than ethnic background or social position.

1Co 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord…
Php 4:1 Therefore, my brothers, whom I love and long for…
1Th 4:1 Finally, brothers, we ask and encourage you…

that you yourselves are full of goodness,

Their lives displayed the moral fruit of genuine faith. Paul did not portray them as sinless, but as believers whose conduct reflected God’s transforming work.

Eph 5:9 for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness…
Col 1:10 so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord…
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…

brimming with knowledge,

They possessed a sound grasp of the gospel and the truth they had received. Their understanding equipped them to live faithfully and recognize teaching that departed from the apostolic message.

Col 2:3 in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom…
Col 1:9 we have not stopped praying for you and asking God…
Php 1:9 And this is my prayer: that your love may abound…

and able to instruct one another.

The Roman believers had sufficient maturity to correct, encourage, and guide one another. Paul’s later instruction would strengthen their understanding, not replace their responsibility to build up the church together.

Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you…
Heb 3:13 But exhort one another daily, as long as it is called…
1Th 5:11 Therefore encourage and build one another up…

However, I have written you a bold reminder on some points,

Paul speaks with pastoral firmness to believers he commends for their goodness and knowledge. His purpose is not to introduce a new gospel but to reinforce truths that must remain central in a church made up of both Jewish and Gentile believers. The letter addresses divisions, moral obligations, and the unity found in Christ.

2Co 10:10-11 His letters are weighty and forceful…
2Pe 3:1-2 Beloved, this is now my second letter to you.…
Jud 1:5 Although you are fully aware of this, I want to remind you…

because of the grace God has given me

Paul’s authority to instruct the Roman church rests on God’s calling, not personal status. God appointed him to proclaim the gospel among the Gentiles, and Paul regarded his ministry as a stewardship entrusted to him by grace.

Eph 3:7-8 I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace…
Gal 2:7-9 On the contrary, they saw that I had been entrusted…
Rom 1:5 Through Him and on behalf of His name, we received grace…

to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles

Paul’s apostleship included a particular calling to bring the gospel to the non-Jewish nations. His ministry demonstrated that salvation through Christ was not limited to Israel but extended to all peoples.

Eph 3:7-8 I became a servant of this gospel by the gift of God’s grace…
Gal 1:15-16 But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb…
1Ti 2:7 For this reason I was appointed as a preacher, an apostle,…

in the priestly service of the gospel of God,

Paul portrays his work as sacred service offered to God. Rather than presenting animal sacrifices, he proclaimed the gospel through which people were brought into God’s covenant family.

Rom 1:9 God, whom I serve with my spirit in preaching the gospel…
1Co 9:13-14 Do you not know that those who work in the temple,…
Heb 13:15-16 Through Jesus, therefore, let us continually offer to God…

so that the Gentiles might become an offering acceptable to God,

Those who believed were themselves presented to God as a consecrated offering. Their acceptance rested not on ethnic identity or observance of the Mosaic law, but on their reconciliation to God through Christ.

Isa 66:20-21 And they will bring all your brothers from all the nations…
Isa 56:6-7 And the foreigners who join themselves to the LORD…
Mal 1:11 For My name will be great among the nations,…

sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit sets believers apart for God, cleansing and transforming them so that they belong to Him. The Gentiles’ inclusion in the people of God was therefore the work of God Himself.

2Th 2:13 But we should always thank God for you, brothers…
1Pe 1:2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father…
1Co 6:11 And that is what some of you were. But you were washed,…

Therefore I exult in Christ Jesus

Paul rejoices not in personal achievement but in Christ’s work through his apostolic ministry. God had appointed him to bring the gospel to the Gentiles, and the fruit of that mission gave him reason to glory in Christ alone.

Php 3:3 For it is we who are the circumcision, we who worship…
1Co 1:31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts…
Gal 6:14 But as for me, may I never boast, except in the cross…

in my service to God.

His ministry was offered to God as sacred service: preaching the gospel, gathering Gentile believers into churches, and presenting them as an acceptable offering through the sanctifying work of the Holy Spirit.

Rom 1:9 God, whom I serve with my spirit in preaching the gospel…
1Pe 2:5 you also, like living stones, are being built…
1Th 1:9 For they themselves report what kind of welcome you gave us,…

I will not presume to speak of anything except what Christ has accomplished through me

Paul credits Christ, not himself, for the fruit of his ministry. Though entrusted with a unique apostolic calling, he regarded his labor, endurance, and success among the nations as the work of the risen Lord.

Gal 2:8 For the One who was at work in Peter’s apostleship…
1Co 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and His grace to me…
Col 1:29 To this end I also labor, striving with all His energy…

in leading the Gentiles to obedience

Paul’s ministry centered on bringing non-Jews out of idolatry and into obedient faith in the God of Israel through Jesus Christ. Their inclusion fulfilled God’s purpose to gather people from every nation into His covenant people.

Rom 1:5 Through Him and on behalf of His name, we received grace…
Rom 16:26 but now revealed and made known through the writings…
Act 26:17-18 I will rescue you from your own people and from the Gentiles…

by word and deed,

Paul proclaimed the gospel publicly and confirmed its truth through a life of service and apostolic works. His conduct and ministry demonstrated that the message he preached carried God’s authority and power.

Luk 24:19 “What things?” He asked. “The events involving Jesus…

by the power of signs and wonders,

God confirmed Paul’s apostolic ministry through miracles that displayed His authority over disease, evil spirits, and the natural order. Such works authenticated the gospel Paul preached and showed that the risen Christ was continuing His work through His appointed messenger.

Heb 2:4 and was affirmed by God through signs, wonders…
Act 14:3 So Paul and Barnabas spent considerable time there…

and by the power of the Spirit of God.

Paul’s effectiveness did not rest on personal ability, training, or endurance. The Holy Spirit empowered his preaching, miracles, suffering, and establishment of churches among the Gentiles. The same Spirit who gives life and gathers believers into Christ enabled the advance of the gospel through Paul’s ministry.

1Th 1:5 our gospel came to you not only in word,…
1Co 2:4 My message and my preaching were not with persuasive words…
Act 10:38 how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit…

So from Jerusalem all the way around to Illyricum,

Paul describes the broad arc of his missionary labor, beginning in Jerusalem and extending westward through Syria, Asia Minor, Macedonia, and Greece toward the region of Illyricum along the Adriatic coast. The gospel had moved beyond its Jewish setting into Gentile lands, fulfilling Christ’s commission to carry His name outward from Jerusalem.

Luk 24:47 and in His name repentance and forgiveness of sins…
Act 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes…
Act 13:47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us:…

I have fully proclaimed the gospel of Christ.

Paul had completed the foundational work assigned to him in these regions by fully proclaiming Christ through preaching, teaching, making disciples, and establishing churches. His message centered on Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection as God’s provision of salvation for Jews and Gentiles alike.

2Ti 4:17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me,…
Col 1:25 I became its servant by the commission God gave me…
Act 20:27 For I did not shrink back from declaring to you…

In this way

Paul describes the guiding pattern of his ministry: carrying the gospel into regions where Christ had not yet been proclaimed. As the apostle sent especially to the Gentiles, he labored to extend the church’s witness beyond established congregations.

Act 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes…
Act 13:47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us:…
Isa 49:6 “It is not enough for You to be My Servant,”…

I have aspired

His settled purpose was directed not toward personal recognition but toward fulfilling the work entrusted to him by Christ.

Php 3:13-14 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold…
Gal 1:15-16 But when God, who set me apart from my mother’s womb…

to preach the gospel

The message of Christ’s death and resurrection, and the salvation available through Him, remained the center of Paul’s ministry.

1Co 1:17 For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach…
Luk 4:43 But Jesus told them, “I must preach the good news…
Mrk 1:38 But Jesus answered, “Let us go on to the neighboring towns”…

where Christ was not known,

He sought unreached cities and peoples, bringing the good news into new territory rather than remaining where churches had already been planted.

Isa 52:15 He will sprinkle many nations. Kings will shut their mouths.…
Rom 10:14-15 How then can they call on the One in whom…
Eph 3:8 Though I am less than the least of all the saints…

so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation.

Paul respected the work of other servants of Christ and concentrated on laying foundations for new churches, with Christ Himself as their only true foundation.

2Co 10:15-16 Neither do we boast beyond our limits…
Heb 6:1 Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings…

Rather, as it is written:

Paul supports his missionary purpose by appealing to Isaiah 52:15, showing that the proclamation of Christ among the nations fulfills God’s revealed plan.

1Co 1:31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let him who boasts…
2Co 4:13 And in keeping with what is written, “I believed,…
Rom 1:17 For the gospel reveals the righteousness of God…

“Those who were not told about Him will see,

Isaiah anticipated that peoples outside Israel would receive knowledge of the Lord’s Servant. Paul applies this promise to the Gentiles who had not previously heard the gospel of Christ.

Isa 52:15 He will sprinkle many nations. Kings will shut their mouths.…
Isa 49:6 “It is not enough for You to be My Servant,”…
Act 13:47 For this is what the Lord has commanded us:…

and those who have not heard will understand.”

The gospel brings those formerly without God’s covenant promises to saving understanding through faith in Christ. Paul’s work among unreached Gentile regions therefore follows the pattern foretold by the prophet.

Isa 66:19 I will establish a sign among them, and I will send…
Isa 65:1 I revealed Myself to those who did not ask for Me;……

That is why

Paul’s calling to proclaim Christ in places where He was not yet known governed his plans and movements. His work among unreached Gentile regions took priority over visiting churches that had already been established.

2Co 10:15-16 Neither do we boast beyond our limits…
Act 9:15 “Go!” said the Lord. “This man is My chosen instrument…

I have often been hindered

The demands of ministry, the needs of newly planted churches, opposition, and the extent of the territory before him repeatedly delayed his travel. These hindrances did not reflect a lack of concern for the believers in Rome but the urgency of completing the work entrusted to him.

1Th 2:18 For we wanted to come to you—indeed I, Paul, tried again…
Act 16:6-7 After the Holy Spirit had prevented them from speaking…

from coming to you.

Paul had long desired to strengthen the Roman church and enjoy fellowship with its believers. Rome’s importance as the center of the empire also made it a strategic place for future ministry, yet his responsibilities elsewhere had prevented the visit.

Act 19:21 After these things had happened, Paul resolved in the Spirit…
Act 23:11 The following night the Lord stood near Paul…

Paul’s Travel Plans

But now that there are no further opportunities for me in these regions,

Paul writes from Corinth near the close of his third missionary journey. His work in Macedonia and Achaia had established and strengthened churches, and the gospel had been widely proclaimed in the eastern provinces. As an apostle called to carry Christ’s name where He was not yet known, Paul was prepared to move on while local believers continued the ministry.

2Co 10:15-16 Neither do we boast beyond our limits…
Act 19:21 After these things had happened, Paul resolved in the Spirit…
1Co 16:8-9 But I will stay in Ephesus until Pentecost,…

and since I have longed for many years to visit you,

Paul had long desired to encourage the Roman Christians and receive fellowship from them. Rome’s central place in the empire made the church there important to his future plans, especially as he looked westward toward Spain. He would eventually reach Rome, not as a free missionary but as a prisoner under Roman guard.

1Th 2:17-18 Brothers, although we were torn away from you…
1Th 3:10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you…
2Ti 1:4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you…

I hope to see you on my way to Spain.

Paul planned to travel west after visiting Rome, with Spain as the next field for his ministry. Although Spain was a Roman province at the far western edge of the empire, Scripture does not record whether Paul ever reached it.

1Co 16:5-7 After I go through Macedonia, however, I will come to you;…
2Co 1:15-16 Confident of this, I planned to visit you first,…
Act 19:21 After these things had happened, Paul resolved in the Spirit…

And after I have enjoyed your company for a while,

He did not view the Roman believers merely as supporters but as fellow Christians whose fellowship would bring mutual encouragement. His visit was intended to be temporary, since his calling continued to lead him into new regions.

3Jn 1:14 Instead, I hope to see you soon and speak with you…
2Ti 1:4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you…
Php 1:25-26 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain…

you can equip me for my journey.

Paul expected the church in Rome to help send him onward to Spain with the practical provision needed for travel and ministry. Their support would make them partners in the work of proclaiming the gospel among the Gentiles.

Tit 3:13 Do your best to equip Zenas the lawyer and Apollos,…
3Jn 1:6 They have testified to the church about your love…
1Co 16:11 No one, then, should treat him with contempt.…

Now, however,

Paul’s work among the churches had brought him to a new stage of ministry. He had completed much of his service in the eastern provinces and was preparing to travel west, but first he had an urgent responsibility to fulfill.

2Co 1:15-17 Confident of this, I planned to visit you first,…
1Co 16:5-7 After I go through Macedonia, however, I will come to you;…
Act 19:21 After these things had happened, Paul resolved in the Spirit…

I am on my way to Jerusalem

He was traveling to the city that remained central to the early church and to the history of God’s covenant people. Though he knew opposition and suffering awaited him there, he was determined to complete the mission entrusted to him.

Act 20:22-24 And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem…
Act 21:10-14 After we had been there several days, Agabus came down…
Gal 2:1-2 Fourteen years later I went up again to Jerusalem,…

to serve the saints there.

Paul was bringing financial aid collected from Gentile believers for the impoverished Christians in Jerusalem. The gift met a real need and demonstrated the unity of Jewish and Gentile believers in Christ.

1Co 16:1-3 Now about the collection for the saints,…
2Co 8:4-5 they earnestly pleaded with us for the privilege…
Act 11:29-30 So the disciples, each according to his ability, decided…

For Macedonia and Achaia

Macedonia and Achaia were Roman provinces in Greece. Macedonia included Philippi, Thessalonica, and Berea, while Achaia included Corinth. Churches in these regions had been established through Paul’s ministry and became active partners in supporting believers beyond their own communities.

2Co 9:2 For I know your eagerness to help, and I have been boasting……
1Th 1:8 For not only did the message of the Lord ring out…
Act 19:21 After these things had happened, Paul resolved in the Spirit…

were pleased to make a contribution

The believers gave willingly, recognizing the needs of fellow Christians in Jerusalem. Their offering expressed practical fellowship between Gentile churches and the largely Jewish church from which the gospel had first gone out.

2Co 8:3-4 For I testify that they gave according to their ability…
2Co 9:7 Each one should give what he has decided…
Php 4:15-16 And as you Philippians know, in the early days…

for the poor among the saints in Jerusalem.

Many believers in Jerusalem faced severe poverty, likely worsened by famine, persecution, and the loss of livelihood that often followed faith in Christ. The collection met genuine material needs and demonstrated the unity of believers across cultural and geographical boundaries.

1Co 16:1-3 Now about the collection for the saints,…
Act 11:29-30 So the disciples, each according to his ability, decided…
Gal 2:10 They only asked us to remember the poor,…

They were pleased to do it,

The Gentile churches gave willingly to the impoverished believers in Jerusalem. Their gift expressed unity with Jewish Christians who had suffered hardship and persecution.

2Co 8:3-4 For I testify that they gave according to their ability…
2Co 9:7 Each one should give what he has decided…
Php 4:15-18 And as you Philippians know, in the early days…

and indeed they owe it to them.

The Gentiles had received the gospel through the Jewish people, from whom came the covenants, the Scriptures, the Messiah, and the first witnesses of Christ. Their material assistance recognized that debt.

1Co 9:11-12 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, …
Rom 1:14 I am obligated both to Greeks and non-Greeks,…
Gal 6:6 Nevertheless, the one who receives instruction…

For if the Gentiles have shared in their spiritual blessings,

Through faith in Christ, Gentile believers were brought into the blessings promised through Israel and received salvation that came through the Jewish Messiah.

Eph 2:12-13 remember that at that time you were separate from Christ,…
Jhn 4:22 You worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know,…
Gal 3:14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing…

they are obligated to minister to them with material blessings.

Since Jewish believers had shared spiritual riches with the Gentile churches, the Gentiles had a fitting responsibility to help meet their physical needs.

Act 11:29-30 So the disciples, each according to his ability, decided…
1Co 16:1-3 Now about the collection for the saints,…
Gal 2:10 They only asked us to remember the poor,…

So after I have completed this service

Paul intended first to finish administering the offering gathered for the needy believers in Jerusalem. The gift expressed the practical unity of Gentile churches with the Jewish believers from whom they had received the gospel.

2Co 8:6 So we urged Titus to help complete your act of grace,…
2Co 9:12-13 For this ministry of service is not only supplying the needs…
Act 11:29-30 So the disciples, each according to his ability, decided…

and have safely delivered this bounty to them,

He recognized his responsibility to ensure that the contribution reached its intended recipients. Travel to Jerusalem carried real dangers, and Paul wanted the churches’ generosity to be handled faithfully.

1Co 16:3-4 Then, on my arrival, I will send letters…
2Co 8:20-21 We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer…
Act 24:17 After several years, then, I returned to Jerusalem…

I will set off to Spain

With the Jerusalem ministry completed, Paul hoped to carry the gospel westward into Spain, territory where he had not yet labored. His plans reflected his calling to preach Christ where He was not already known.

2Co 10:15-16 Neither do we boast beyond our limits…
Act 19:21 After these things had happened, Paul resolved in the Spirit…
Act 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes…

by way of you.

Paul expected to visit Rome for fellowship and encouragement before continuing to Spain. The Roman believers could also provide support for the next stage of his mission.

2Co 1:15-16 Confident of this, I planned to visit you first,…
1Co 16:5-7 After I go through Macedonia, however, I will come to you;…
Rom 1:10-12 in my prayers at all times, asking that now at last……

I know that when I come to you,

Paul had long desired to visit the believers in Rome and expected God to open the way. He eventually arrived, not as a free traveler, but as a prisoner under Roman guard, yet his coming still served the advance of the gospel.

2Co 1:15-16 Confident of this, I planned to visit you first,…
Rom 1:11 For I long to see you so that I may impart…
Rom 1:13 I do not want you to be unaware, brothers……

I will come in the fullness

Paul anticipated that his ministry among them would be marked by the complete provision and power God gives through the gospel.

Jhn 1:16 From His fullness we have all received grace upon grace.
Col 1:19 For God was pleased to have all His fullness dwell in Him,
Eph 3:19 of the love of Christ, and to know this love…

of the blessing of Christ.

The benefits of salvation, spiritual strength, peace, and instruction in Christ would accompany Paul’s visit, directing the Roman church to the riches found in their Lord.

Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,…
Gal 3:14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing…
Act 3:26 When God raised up His Servant, He sent Him first to you…

Now I urge you, brothers,

Paul appeals to the Roman believers as members of God’s family, calling them to share in the concerns of his ministry.

1Co 1:10 I appeal to you, brothers, in the name of our Lord…
1Th 4:1 Finally, brothers, we ask and encourage you…
Heb 13:22 I urge you, brothers, to bear with my word of exhortation,…

by our Lord Jesus Christ

Their common allegiance to the risen Lord gives weight to the appeal and unites them in one mission.

1Th 4:1-2 Finally, brothers, we ask and encourage you…
2Th 3:6 Now we command you, brothers, in the name of our Lord…
1Co 5:4 When you are assembled in the name of our Lord Jesus…

and by the love of the Spirit,

The Spirit produces love among believers and binds the churches together in mutual care.

Col 1:8 and who also informed us of your love in the Spirit.
Rom 5:5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out…
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace…

to join me in my struggle

Paul was preparing to travel to Jerusalem with the collection for the needy saints, aware that opposition and danger awaited him.

Php 1:27 Nevertheless, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy…
Php 1:30 since you are encountering the same struggle…
Col 2:1 I want you to know how much I am struggling for you…

by praying to God for me.

He asks the Roman church to labor with him through prayer, trusting God to protect, guide, and strengthen him for the work ahead.

1Th 5:25 Brothers, pray for us as well.
Col 4:3 as you pray also for us, that God may open to us a door…
Eph 6:18-19 Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer…

Pray that I may be delivered from the unbelievers in Judea,

Paul knew that his return to Jerusalem placed him in danger from Jews who rejected Jesus as the Messiah. Their hostility had already led to violent opposition against him, and he asked the Roman believers to pray for God’s protection as he carried out his mission.

Act 23:12-24 When daylight came, the Jews formed a conspiracy…
Act 21:27-36 When the seven days were almost over, some Jews…
2Th 3:1-2 Finally, brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord…

and that my service in Jerusalem may be acceptable to the saints there,

Paul was bringing a financial gift from Gentile churches to aid the poor believers in Jerusalem. Its acceptance would help strengthen fellowship between Jewish and Gentile Christians and testify to the unity created through faith in Christ.

1Co 16:1-4 Now about the collection for the saints,…
2Co 9:12-13 For this ministry of service is not only supplying the needs…
2Co 8:4-5 they earnestly pleaded with us for the privilege…

so that by God’s will

Paul placed his travel plans under God’s sovereign direction, recognizing that the Lord could open or close the way according to His purposes. Though he longed to reach Rome, he did not presume upon the future.

Jas 4:15 If the Lord is willing, we will live and do…
Act 18:21 But as he left, he said, “I will come back to you…
1Co 16:7 For I do not want to see you now only in passing;…

I may come to you with joy

Paul hoped that his arrival would follow the Lord’s deliverance from opposition in Judea and the acceptance of the relief offering he carried to Jerusalem. A visit to the Roman believers would bring rejoicing through their shared faith and fellowship.

2Jn 1:12 I have many things to write to you, but I would prefer not…
2Ti 1:4 Recalling your tears, I long to see you…
Php 1:25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain…

and together with you be refreshed.

Paul expected mutual encouragement and rest among the Christians in Rome. Their fellowship would strengthen him after demanding ministry and would also prepare the church for continued service to Christ.

1Co 16:18 For they refreshed my spirit and yours as well.…
Phm 1:7 I take great joy and encouragement in your love,…
2Co 7:13 On account of this, we are encouraged…

The God of peace

God alone establishes true peace, bringing reconciliation, order, and wholeness to those who belong to Him through Christ. Paul closes his appeal for unity among Jewish and Gentile believers by pointing to the God who removes hostility and preserves His people in harmony.

Rom 16:20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet.…
Heb 13:20 Now may the God of peace, who through the blood…
1Th 5:23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify…

be with all of you.

The blessing includes the entire Roman church, whose members came from differing backgrounds and convictions. God’s presence would strengthen them to receive one another, serve together, and remain united in the gospel.

2Th 3:16 may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace.…
Heb 13:25 Grace be with all of you.
2Co 13:14 The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God…

Amen.

The congregation’s affirmation—“Amen,” a Hebrew word meaning “truly” or “so be it”—expresses confidence that God will accomplish what Paul has asked and remain faithful to His people.

Rom 16:27 to the only wise God be glory forever through Jesus Christ!…
Jud 1:25 to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, dominion…
2Pe 3:18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior…
