1 For the choirmaster. A Psalm of David. A song. God arises. His enemies are scattered, and those who hate Him flee His presence. God shall arise, his enemies shall be scattered; and those who hate him shall flee before him! To the chief Musician, A Psalm <i>or</i> Song of David. Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him. For the music director. A Psalm of David. A Song. 2 As smoke is blown away, You will drive them out; as wax melts before the fire, the wicked will perish in the presence of God. As smoke is driven away, so you shall drive them away; as wax melts before fire, so the wicked shall perish before God! As smoke is driven away, <i>so</i> drive <i>them</i> away: as wax melteth before the fire, <i>so</i> let the wicked perish at the presence of God. As smoke is driven away, <i>so</i> drive <i>them</i> away; As wax melts before a fire, <i>So</i> the wicked will perish before God. May you blow them away like smoke— as wax melts before the fire, may the wicked perish before God.
3 But the righteous will be glad and rejoice before God; they will celebrate with joy. But the righteous shall be glad; they shall exult before God; they shall be jubilant with joy! But let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice. But the righteous will be joyful; they will rejoice before God; Yes, they will rejoice with gladness. But may the righteous be glad and rejoice before God; may they be happy and joyful.
4 Sing to God! Sing praises to His name. Exalt Him who rides on the clouds His name is the LORD— and rejoice before Him. Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the LORD; exult before him! Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: extol him that rideth upon the heavens by his name JAH, and rejoice before him. Sing to God, sing praises to His name; Exalt Him who rides through the deserts, Whose name is the LORD, and be jubilant before Him. Sing to God, sing in praise of his name, extol him who rides on the clouds; rejoice before him—his name is the LORD.
5 A father of the fatherless, and a defender of the widows, is God in His holy habitation. Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. A father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, <i>is</i> God in his holy habitation. A father of the fatherless and a judge for the widows, Is God in His holy dwelling. 6 God settles the lonely in families; He leads the prisoners out to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a sun-scorched land. God settles the solitary in a home; he leads out the prisoners to prosperity, but the rebellious dwell in a parched land. God setteth the solitary in families: he bringeth out those which are bound with chains: but the rebellious dwell in a dry <i>land</i>. 8 the earth shook and the heavens poured down rain before God, the One on Sinai, before God, the God of Israel. the earth quaked, the heavens poured down rain, before God, the One of Sinai, before God, the God of Israel. 9 You sent abundant rain, O God; You refreshed Your weary inheritance. You made plentiful rain fall, God; You confirmed Your inheritance when it was parched. You gave abundant showers, O God; you refreshed your weary inheritance.
10 Your flock settled therein; O God, from Your bounty You provided for the poor. your flock found a dwelling in it; in your goodness, O God, you provided for the needy. Thy congregation hath dwelt therein: thou, O God, hast prepared of thy goodness for the poor. Your creatures settled in it; In Your kindness You provided for the poor, God. Your people settled in it, and from your bounty, God, you provided for the poor.
11 The Lord gives the command; a great company of women proclaim it: The Lord gives the word; the women who announce the news are a great host: The Lord gave the word: great <i>was</i> the company of those that published <i>it</i>. The Lord gives the command; The women who proclaim good news are a great army: The Lord announces the word, and the women who proclaim it are a mighty throng:
12 “Kings and their armies flee in haste; she who waits at home divides the plunder. “The kings of the armies—they flee, they flee!” The women at home divide the spoil— Kings of armies did flee apace: and she that tarried at home divided the spoil. “Kings of armies flee, they flee, And she who remains at home will divide the spoils!” “Kings and armies flee in haste; the women at home divide the plunder.
13 Though you lie down among the sheepfolds, the wings of the dove are covered with silver, and her feathers with shimmering gold.” though you men lie among the sheepfolds— the wings of a dove covered with silver, its pinions with shimmering gold. Though ye have lien among the pots, <i>yet shall ye be as</i> the wings of a dove covered with silver, and her feathers with yellow gold. 14 When the Almighty scattered the kings in the land, it was like the snow falling on Zalmon. When the Almighty scatters kings there, let snow fall on Zalmon. 16 Why do you gaze in envy, O mountains of many peaks? This is the mountain God chose for His dwelling, where the LORD will surely dwell forever. Why do you look with hatred, O many-peaked mountain, at the mount that God desired for his abode, yes, where the LORD will dwell forever? Why leap ye, ye high hills? <i>this is</i> the hill <i>which</i> God desireth to dwell in; yea, the LORD will dwell <i>in it</i> for ever. Why do you look with envy, you mountains of many peaks, At the mountain God has desired as His dwelling? Indeed, the LORD will dwell <i>there</i> forever. why gaze in envy, you rugged mountain, at the mountain where God chooses to reign, where the LORD himself will dwell forever?
17 The chariots of God are tens of thousands— thousands of thousands are they; the Lord is in His sanctuary as He was at Sinai. The chariots of God are twice ten thousand, thousands upon thousands; the Lord is among them; Sinai is now in the sanctuary. The chariots of God <i>are</i> twenty thousand, <i>even</i> thousands of angels: the Lord <i>is</i> among them, <i>as in</i> Sinai, in the holy <i>place</i>. The chariots of God are myriads, thousands upon thousands; The Lord is among them <i>as at</i> Sinai, in holiness. The chariots of God are tens of thousands and thousands of thousands; the Lord has come from Sinai into his sanctuary.
18 You have ascended on high; You have led captives away. You have received gifts from men, even from the rebellious, that the LORD God may dwell there. You ascended on high, leading a host of captives in your train and receiving gifts among men, even among the rebellious, that the LORD God may dwell there. Thou hast ascended on high, thou hast led captivity captive: thou hast received gifts for men; yea, <i>for</i> the rebellious also, that the LORD God might dwell <i>among them</i>. 20 Our God is a God of deliverance; the Lord GOD is our rescuer from death. Our God is a God of salvation, and to GOD, the Lord, belong deliverances from death. <i>He that is</i> our God <i>is</i> the God of salvation; and unto GOD the Lord <i>belong</i> the issues from death. God is to us a God of salvation; And to GOD the Lord belong ways of escape from death. Our God is a God who saves; from the Sovereign LORD comes escape from death.
21 Surely God will crush the heads of His enemies, the hairy crowns of those who persist in guilty ways. But God will strike the heads of his enemies, the hairy crown of him who walks in his guilty ways. But God shall wound the head of his enemies, <i>and</i> the hairy scalp of such an one as goeth on still in his trespasses. God certainly will shatter the heads of His enemies, The hairy head of one who goes about in his guilt. Surely God will crush the heads of his enemies, the hairy crowns of those who go on in their sins.
22 The Lord said, “I will retrieve them from Bashan, I will bring them up from the depths of the sea, The Lord said, “I will bring them back from Bashan, I will bring them back from the depths of the sea, The Lord said, I will bring again from Bashan, I will bring <i>my people</i> again from the depths of the sea: The Lord said, “I will bring <i>them</i> back from Bashan. I will bring <i>them</i> back from the depths of the sea, The Lord says, “I will bring them from Bashan; I will bring them from the depths of the sea,
23 that your foot may be dipped in the blood of your foes— the tongues of your dogs in the same.” that you may strike your feet in their blood, that the tongues of your dogs may have their portion from the foe.” That thy foot may be dipped in the blood of <i>thine</i> enemies, <i>and</i> the tongue of thy dogs in the same. So that your foot may shatter <i>them</i> in blood, <i>And</i> the tongue of your dogs <i>may have</i> its portion from <i>your</i> enemies.” that your feet may wade in the blood of your foes, while the tongues of your dogs have their share.”
24 They have seen Your procession, O God— the march of my God and King into the sanctuary. Your procession is seen, O God, the procession of my God, my King, into the sanctuary— They have seen thy goings, O God; <i>even</i> the goings of my God, my King, in the sanctuary. They have seen Your procession, God, The procession of my God, my King, into the sanctuary. Your procession, God, has come into view, the procession of my God and King into the sanctuary.
25 The singers lead the way, the musicians follow after, among the maidens playing tambourines. the singers in front, the musicians last, between them virgins playing tambourines: The singers went before, the players on instruments <i>followed</i> after; among <i>them were</i> the damsels playing with timbrels. The singers went on, the musicians after <i>them,</i> In the midst of the young women beating tambourines. 26 Bless God in the great congregation; bless the LORD from the fountain of Israel. “Bless God in the great congregation, the LORD, O you who are of Israel’s fountain!” Bless ye God in the congregations, <i>even</i> the Lord, from the fountain of Israel. Bless God in the congregations, <i>Even</i> the LORD, <i>you who are</i> of the fountain of Israel. Praise God in the great congregation; praise the LORD in the assembly of Israel.
27 There is Benjamin, the youngest, ruling them, the princes of Judah in their company, the princes of Zebulun and of Naphtali. There is Benjamin, the least of them, in the lead, the princes of Judah in their throng, the princes of Zebulun, the princes of Naphtali. There <i>is</i> little Benjamin <i>with</i> their ruler, the princes of Judah <i>and</i> their council, the princes of Zebulun, <i>and</i> the princes of Naphtali. Benjamin, the youngest, is there, ruling them, The leaders of Judah <i>in</i> their company, The leaders of Zebulun, the leaders of Naphtali. 28 Summon Your power, O God; show Your strength, O God, which You have exerted on our behalf. Summon your power, O God, the power, O God, by which you have worked for us. Thy God hath commanded thy strength: strengthen, O God, that which thou hast wrought for us. Your God has commanded your strength; Show Yourself strong, God, You who acted in our behalf. 29 Because of Your temple at Jerusalem kings will bring You gifts. Because of your temple at Jerusalem kings shall bear gifts to you. 30 Rebuke the beast in the reeds, the herd of bulls among the calves of the nations, until it submits, bringing bars of silver. Scatter the nations who delight in war. Rebuke the beasts that dwell among the reeds, the herd of bulls with the calves of the peoples. Trample underfoot those who lust after tribute; scatter the peoples who delight in war. Rebuke the company of spearmen, the multitude of the bulls, with the calves of the people, <i>till every one</i> submit himself with pieces of silver: scatter thou the people <i>that</i> delight in war. Rebuke the animals in the reeds, The herd of bulls with the calves of the peoples, Trampling the pieces of silver; He has scattered the peoples who delight in war. Rebuke the beast among the reeds, the herd of bulls among the calves of the nations. Humbled, may the beast bring bars of silver. Scatter the nations who delight in war.
31 Envoys will arrive from Egypt; Cush will stretch out her hands to God. Nobles shall come from Egypt; Cush shall hasten to stretch out her hands to God. Princes shall come out of Egypt; Ethiopia shall soon stretch out her hands unto God. Messengers will come from Egypt; Cush will quickly stretch out her hands to God. 33 to Him who rides upon the highest heavens of old; behold, His mighty voice resounds. to him who rides in the heavens, the ancient heavens; behold, he sends out his voice, his mighty voice. To him that rideth upon the heavens of heavens, <i>which were</i> of old; lo, he doth send out his voice, <i>and that</i> a mighty voice. O God, <i>thou art</i> terrible out of thy holy places: the God of Israel <i>is</i> he that giveth strength and power unto <i>his</i> people. Blessed <i>be</i> God.
