Acts 16
Berean Study Bible

Timothy Joins Paul and Silas

Paul came to Derbe and then to Lystra,

Paul revisited the Galatian cities he had evangelized during his first missionary journey. In Lystra, where he had healed a man lame from birth and the crowds had tried to honor him and Barnabas as gods, he sought to strengthen the believers.

where he found a disciple named Timothy,

There Paul found a disciple named Timothy, a young believer who would become one of his trusted companions and fellow workers. Timothy’s faithful character and growing maturity prepared him for significant responsibility in the churches.

the son of a believing Jewish woman and a Greek father.

His mother, Eunice, had embraced faith in Christ and, along with his grandmother Lois, had helped shape Timothy’s sincere faith. His Jewish and Greek background gave him familiarity with both communities and would serve him well in ministry among Jews and Gentiles.

The brothers in Lystra and Iconium

These Galatian cities had received the gospel during Paul’s first missionary journey, despite strong opposition in the region. Churches had been established there, and the believers knew Timothy well. Their shared testimony shows that his faithfulness and character were evident beyond his hometown.

spoke well of him.

Timothy had earned the confidence of the believers through a consistent life and service to the church. Their recommendation confirmed that he was prepared to join Paul in the work of the gospel.

Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him,

Timothy had earned a strong reputation among the believers in Lystra and Iconium. Paul recognized his usefulness and invited him to join the missionary team, where he would receive further instruction and share in the work of establishing churches.

so he took him and circumcised him

Paul did not require circumcision for salvation, but he removed an obstacle that would hinder Timothy’s access to Jewish communities. Timothy’s Jewish mother made his uncircumcised condition especially objectionable to Jews.

on account of the Jews in that area,

Paul sought to avoid a preventable controversy that could close doors for the gospel. Timothy’s circumcision enabled him to accompany Paul into synagogues and minister among Jews without his background becoming the central issue.

for they all knew that his father was a Greek.

Since Timothy’s father was Greek, he had apparently not been circumcised in childhood. His mixed heritage was widely known, making the matter significant in the communities where Paul and Timothy would serve.

As they went from town to town,

Paul, Silas, and Timothy traveled through the churches of Syria, Cilicia, Galatia, and nearby regions, strengthening believers and extending the gospel among both Jews and Gentiles.

they delivered the decisions

They brought the instructions agreed upon at the Jerusalem Council, which affirmed that Gentile believers were not required to be circumcised or placed under the Mosaic Law. They were to avoid idolatry, sexual immorality, and practices offensive to Jewish believers.

handed down by the apostles and elders in Jerusalem

The Jerusalem church, led by the apostles and elders, had considered the matter carefully and recognized the Holy Spirit’s guidance in their decision. Their judgment preserved the truth of salvation by grace while promoting fellowship between Jewish and Gentile Christians.

So the churches were strengthened in the faith

As Paul, Silas, and Timothy traveled through the congregations, they delivered the decisions of the Jerusalem council and provided needed instruction. The churches were established in sound doctrine, protected from false teaching, and encouraged to remain faithful to Christ.

As the churches became more firmly grounded, the gospel continued to spread through their witness. New believers were added regularly, demonstrating God’s blessing on the missionary work and the growing influence of the church throughout the region.

Paul’s Vision of the Macedonian

After the Holy Spirit had prevented them from speaking the word in the province of Asia,

Paul and his companions were not free to choose their route solely by opportunity or convenience. Asia was a major Roman province in western Asia Minor, containing influential cities such as Ephesus. The restriction was temporary, not a rejection of the region, since the gospel would later spread widely there. God directed the mission according to His appointed timing and purpose.

they traveled through the region of Phrygia and Galatia.

Moving through these inland areas, the missionaries continued strengthening and proclaiming the gospel among Gentile populations. Galatia included communities where churches would later face disputes over the place of the Mosaic law in Christian life. Their journey shows the gospel advancing beyond its original Jewish setting while remaining under the Spirit’s direct guidance.

And when they came to the border of Mysia,

Mysia lay in northwestern Asia Minor, in present-day Turkey, along routes connecting inland provinces with the Aegean coast. Paul and his companions had traveled through Phrygia and Galatia and now reached a point where their direction would determine the next stage of the mission.

The Spirit of Jesus, the Holy Spirit acting under Christ’s authority, prevented their planned route. Their work was directed not merely by available roads or human strategy, but by God’s purpose and timing, leading them instead toward the Macedonian call.

So they passed by Mysia

Mysia lay in northwestern Asia Minor, near the Aegean coast of present-day Turkey. Paul and his companions traveled through the region without beginning ministry there, following the Spirit’s direction away from other planned routes.

Troas was an important harbor city near ancient Troy, providing passage between Asia Minor and Macedonia. There Paul would receive God’s direction to carry the gospel into Macedonia, opening a new stage of missionary work in Europe.

Lydia’s Conversion in Philippi

We sailed from Troas

Troas, a major port in the Roman province of Asia near ancient Troy, became the departure point for Paul’s first mission into Macedonia. The use of “we” shows that Luke joined the traveling party and records these events as an eyewitness.

From there we went to the Roman colony of Philippi,

Philippi lay in eastern Macedonia along the Via Egnatia, the major Roman road linking the region with the Adriatic and Asia Minor. After the Battle of Philippi in 42 BC, Roman veterans were settled there, and Augustus later strengthened its status as a colony. Its Roman character brought civic privileges and made it an important center of administration, trade, and travel. Paul’s arrival marked the first recorded preaching of the gospel on European soil.

Though not the provincial capital, Philippi was a prominent city in the first district of Macedonia. Its location, Roman population, and connection to the Via Egnatia gave it influence beyond its size. The city’s history remained closely tied to Rome because the defeat of Brutus and Cassius there secured the rule of Antony and Octavian.

Paul, Silas, Timothy, and Luke remained long enough to seek out worshipers and begin ministry among the people of the city. Lydia became the first recorded convert, and her home provided a meeting place for the believers. Their work also led to opposition, imprisonment, and the conversion of the jailer and his household, establishing a church that would remain deeply connected to Paul.

One day as we were going to the place of prayer,

The spirit publicly identified Paul and his companions as servants of the true God. Though the words were accurate, the testimony came from an unclean source and threatened to confuse the message of the gospel with pagan spiritual practices.

Paul and his companions had come to announce salvation through Jesus Christ. The girl’s repeated cries drew attention to them, but they also created a distraction that Paul would soon confront by commanding the spirit to leave her.

Jhn 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.…
Act 13:26 Brothers, children of Abraham, and you Gentiles who fear God…

She continued this for many days.

The slave girl’s repeated cries disrupted Paul’s ministry in Philippi. Though her words identified Paul and his companions as servants of the Most High God, they came from an evil spirit and joined the gospel proclamation to pagan divination.

Luk 8:29 For Jesus had commanded the unclean spirit to come out…

Eventually Paul grew so aggravated that he turned and said to the spirit,

Paul recognized that the girl herself was not the true source of the disturbance. After enduring it for many days, he addressed the demon directly, acting with the authority Christ had given His servants.

Act 13:10-11 O child of the devil and enemy of all righteousness,…

Paul did not rely on personal power or ritual. He commanded the spirit by the authority of Jesus Christ, whose rule extends over every demonic power.

Luk 10:17 The seventy-two returned with joy and said,…

And the spirit left her at that very moment.

The deliverance was immediate and complete. The demon’s departure demonstrated Christ’s authority and ended the girl’s bondage to the spirit that had been used for her owners’ profit.

Luk 4:35 But Jesus rebuked the demon. “Be silent!” He said.…

When the girl’s owners saw that their hope of making money was gone,

The girl’s owners were angered because her deliverance ended the income they had gained through her occult fortune-telling. Their concern was not for her welfare but for their financial loss. The gospel confronted a sinful practice that had become profitable to them.

The crowd joined in the attack against Paul and Silas,

The loss of income from the slave girl’s fortune-telling stirred her owners to stir up public anger against the missionaries. In the tense setting of a Roman colony, the crowd quickly sided with the accusations and treated Paul and Silas as threats to civic order.

Act 19:29 Soon the whole city was in disarray. They rushed together…

and the magistrates ordered that they be stripped and beaten with rods.

Philippi’s magistrates acted without a proper hearing, ordering a public flogging meant to shame and discourage those accused of causing unrest. Paul and Silas endured punishment that was unlawful for Roman citizens, though their citizenship would not be revealed until afterward.

Act 22:24-25 The commander ordered that Paul be brought…

they threw them into prison

They threw Paul and Silas into prison, though they had committed no crime. Their imprisonment followed their deliverance of a slave girl from the spirit that had brought profit to her owners.

On receiving this order,

On receiving this order, the jailer acted under the magistrates’ authority and treated Paul and Silas as serious prisoners. Their public beating and arrest had heightened concern about further disturbance or escape.

he placed them in the inner cell

Paul and Silas were placed in the inner cell, the most secure part of the prison, where conditions were likely dark and restrictive. Though they had committed no crime deserving such treatment, they were treated as threats to public order because of the message they proclaimed.

The Conversion of the Jailer

About midnight

In the darkness of night, when hope might seem least likely, God was preparing to act.

Mat 25:6 At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here is the bridegroom!…
Mrk 13:35 Therefore keep watch, because you do not know…
Psa 119:62 At midnight I rise to give You thanks…

Paul and Silas

Having been beaten and confined in the inner prison at Philippi, the two missionaries remained united in faith and purpose.

Act 15:40 But Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the brothers…

were praying and singing hymns to God,

Their worship showed confidence in God despite suffering and made clear that their imprisonment had not silenced their witness.

Jas 5:13 Is any one of you suffering? He should pray.…
Eph 5:19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns…
Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you…

and the other prisoners were listening to them.

The prisoners heard more than songs; they witnessed the peace and faith of men who trusted God in hardship, preparing the setting for the events that would soon affect the jailer and his household.

Luk 19:48 They could not find a way to do so, because all the people…
Act 13:44 On the following Sabbath, nearly the whole city gathered…
1Co 14:24-25 But if an unbeliever or uninstructed person comes in…

Suddenly a strong earthquake shook the foundations of the prison.

The earthquake was a direct act of God, displaying His authority over creation and over the Roman power represented by the prison at Philippi. Though Paul and Silas were confined in the inner cell, God shook the very structure built to hold them. The event recalls other moments when God revealed His presence through the shaking of the earth and points to His power to overturn human opposition to His purposes.

Mat 28:2 Suddenly there was a great earthquake…
Psa 18:7 Then the earth shook and quaked, and the foundations…
Act 4:31 After they had prayed, their meeting place was shaken…

At once all the doors flew open

The prison doors opened immediately, removing every physical barrier to escape. Yet Paul and Silas did not flee, because God’s purpose extended beyond their deliverance. The miracle prepared the way for the jailer, whose life and household would be changed through the message of Christ.

Act 5:19 But during the night an angel of the Lord opened the doors…
Act 12:10 They passed the first and second guards and came…
Psa 107:16 For He has broken down the gates of bronze…

and everyone’s chains came loose.

Every prisoner was freed from his restraints, demonstrating that the Lord’s power reached beyond Paul and Silas alone. The release from chains pictures the freedom Christ gives from sin and spiritual bondage. What began as a night of suffering became the setting for the salvation of the jailer and the further advance of the gospel in Philippi.

Act 12:7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone…
Psa 107:14 He brought them out of darkness and the shadow of death…
Isa 58:6 Isn’t this the fast that I have chosen: to break the chains…

When the jailer woke up

The jailer was responsible for guarding the prisoners and would have been held personally accountable for any escape. His sleep indicates that it was nighttime, consistent with Paul and Silas praying and singing at midnight.

Jdg 16:20 Then she called out, “Samson, the Philistines are here!”…
Jon 1:6 “How can you sleep? Get up and call upon your God.”…
Act 12:7 Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared and a light shone…

and saw the prison doors open,

The earthquake had thrown open the doors and loosened the prisoners’ chains. Seeing the prison opened, the jailer assumed that the prisoners had fled.

Act 12:10 They passed the first and second guards and came…
Psa 107:16 For He has broken down the gates of bronze…

he drew his sword

Knowing the consequences of a prison escape, he immediately prepared to take his own life rather than face Roman punishment and public disgrace.

presuming that the prisoners had escaped.

Though the doors stood open, Paul, Silas, and the other prisoners remained. Their conduct prevented the jailer’s death and prepared the way for him to hear the message of salvation.

Act 12:19 After Herod had searched for him unsuccessfully,…
Act 5:23 We found the jail securely locked, with the guards posted…
1Ki 20:39-42 As the king passed by, he cried out to the king:…

But Paul called out in a loud voice,

Paul immediately recognized the jailer’s danger and acted without hesitation. Roman jailers were held responsible for escaped prisoners and could face severe punishment, even death. Though freed by the earthquake, Paul remained concerned for the man who had guarded him.

Act 14:10 In a loud voice Paul called out, “Stand up on your feet!”…
Jhn 11:43 After Jesus had said this, He called out in a loud voice…
Rev 19:17 Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he cried out…

“Do not harm yourself!

Believing the prisoners had fled, the jailer prepared to take his own life rather than face Roman justice. Paul’s warning preserved him from a needless death and opened the way for him to hear the gospel.

Gen 22:12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel…
1Sa 31:4-5 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword…
Mat 27:5 So Judas threw the silver into the temple and left.…

We are all here!”

No prisoner had escaped. Their remaining in the prison revealed God’s control over the situation and demonstrated the integrity of Paul and Silas. The jailer saw that the men he had confined were not seeking revenge or freedom at his expense, preparing him to respond to their message about salvation.

Act 27:22 But now I urge you to keep up your courage,…
Act 27:34 So for your own preservation, I urge you to eat…
Act 27:44 The rest were to follow on planks and various parts…

Calling for lights,

The prison was likely dark, especially in its inner cells. After the earthquake opened the doors and loosened the chains, the jailer needed light to inspect the prison and confirm what had happened.

Jhn 18:3 So Judas brought a band of soldiers and officers…
Luk 15:8 Or what woman who has ten silver coins…
Mat 5:15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a basket.…

the jailer rushed in

Responsible for the prisoners under penalty of death if they escaped, he had been overwhelmed by fear. Paul’s assurance that all the prisoners remained did not lessen the force of the miracle he had witnessed.

Mrk 6:25 At once the girl hurried back to the king with her request:…
Act 12:14 When she recognized Peter’s voice, she was so overjoyed…
Dan 2:25 Arioch hastily brought Daniel before the king…

and fell trembling before Paul and Silas.

Recognizing that the earthquake and the prisoners’ restraint came from the God proclaimed by Paul and Silas, the jailer humbled himself before them. His fear and reverence prepared him to ask how he could be saved.

Luk 8:47 Then the woman, seeing that she could not escape notice,…

Then he brought them out

The jailer led Paul and Silas from the prison after the earthquake had opened the doors and loosened the chains. Though he had feared the prisoners had escaped, Paul assured him that all remained present.

and asked,

Shaken by the events and by the conduct of Paul and Silas, he sought their counsel concerning the power of God he had witnessed.

to be saved?”

He understood that he needed more than deliverance from immediate danger: salvation from sin and its consequences. Paul and Silas would direct him to salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.

Act 4:12 Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other…
Rom 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”…
Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…

They replied,

Paul and Silas answered the Philippian jailer after the earthquake opened the prison doors and exposed his need for salvation. Though suffering as prisoners, they directed him immediately to Christ.

Rom 10:9-10 that if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,”…
Jhn 1:12 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed…
Jhn 20:31 But these are written so that you may believe…

“Believe in the Lord Jesus

The jailer was called to place his trust in Jesus, acknowledging Him as the risen Lord and the only Savior.

Jhn 6:29 Jesus replied, “The work of God is this: to believe…
Jhn 3:16 For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son…
1Jn 5:1 Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ…

and you will be saved,

Salvation comes through faith in Christ rather than human effort or religious works. The promise was certain for all who truly believed.

Rom 10:13 Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord…
Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…
Eph 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith…

you and your household.”

The offer extended to the jailer’s family as well, not because they would be saved through his faith, but because they too would hear the gospel and respond personally to it.

Act 11:14 He will convey to you a message by which…
Gen 7:1 Then the LORD said to Noah, “Go into the ark…

Then Paul and Silas

Having assured the jailer that no prisoner had escaped, Paul and Silas turned from their own suffering to address his urgent spiritual need. Though confined as prisoners, they remained faithful witnesses of Christ.

Act 15:40 But Paul chose Silas and left, commended by the brothers…
Act 17:10 As soon as night had fallen, the brothers sent Paul…

spoke the word of the Lord

They explained the message of salvation through Jesus Christ, including the truth of His death, resurrection, and lordship. The jailer’s faith rested on hearing and receiving this message.

Act 8:25 And after Peter and John had testified…
Act 15:35 But Paul and Barnabas remained at Antioch,…

to him

The jailer had witnessed the conduct of Paul and Silas, the earthquake, and their concern for his life. His fear gave way to a desire to know how he could be saved.

Act 8:35 Then Philip began with this very Scripture…
Act 9:17 So Ananias went to the house, and when he arrived…

and to everyone in his house.

The message was given to all who were present in the household, so that each could hear and respond in faith. The household’s later baptism followed their reception of the word.

Act 18:8 Crispus, the synagogue leader, believed in the Lord.…
Act 10:2 He and all his household were devout and…

At that hour of the night,

“At that hour of the night” emphasizes the jailer’s immediate response to the gospel. Although it was late and Paul and Silas had been beaten only hours earlier, he no longer treated them as criminals in his charge.

Act 12:6-7 On the night before Herod was to bring him to trial,…
Mat 2:14 So he got up, took the Child and His mother by night,…
Psa 119:62 At midnight I rise to give You thanks…

the jailer took them

The jailer took Paul and Silas into his own care, bringing them out of the prison setting and responding with practical kindness. His actions revealed a decisive change from fear and duty to faith and service.

Mat 25:35 For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat,…
Act 28:7 Nearby stood an estate belonging to Publius,…

and washed their wounds.

Paul and Silas had been severely beaten before their imprisonment. By tending their injuries, the jailer sought to correct the harsh treatment they had received and showed the fruit of his new faith.

Psa 147:3 He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

he and all his household

“He and all his household” indicates that the jailer’s conversion brought the gospel to everyone in his home, who also heard and received the word of the Lord.

Then he brought them into his home

The Philippian jailer moved from guarding Paul and Silas as prisoners to receiving them as honored guests. His actions revealed the immediate change brought by faith in Christ.

Act 28:7 Nearby stood an estate belonging to Publius,…
Act 10:23 So Peter invited them in as his guests.…

Act 27:35 After he had said this, Paul took bread and gave thanks…
Luk 24:30 While He was reclining at the table, He took bread…

So he and all his household rejoiced

The household’s joy followed their baptism and belief in the message Paul and Silas had proclaimed. Their response showed that the gospel had brought peace and hope into the entire family.

The jailer’s faith was not merely fear after the earthquake but trust in the God proclaimed by Paul and Silas. His changed conduct, care for the apostles, baptism, and rejoicing showed the reality of that faith.

An Official Apology

the magistrates sent their officers

The magistrates of Philippi, a Roman colony, exercised civil authority through officers who carried out their orders.

Jhn 7:32 When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering…
Jhn 7:45-46 Then the officers returned to the chief priests…
Jhn 18:12 Then the band of soldiers, with its commander…

with the order: “Release those men.”

No reason is given for the reversal. The order ended their confinement, though Paul would soon require the magistrates to address the injustice committed against them as Roman citizens.

Luk 23:16 Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.”
Mat 27:26 So Pilate released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus…

The jailer informed Paul:

The man who had guarded Paul and Silas through the night now brings news of their release. After witnessing the earthquake and believing the message Paul preached, he no longer treats them merely as prisoners but as men worthy of respect.

Jhn 20:18 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples,…
Mat 28:8 So they hurried away from the tomb in fear and great joy,…

“The magistrates have sent orders to release you.

The magistrates, the chief officials of the Roman colony at Philippi, had ordered Paul and Silas beaten and imprisoned without a hearing. Their command to release them likely reflected a desire to end the disturbance caused by the earthquake and the events of the night.

Luk 23:16 Therefore I will punish Him and release Him.”
2Ki 25:27 On the twenty-seventh day of the twelfth month…

Now you may go on your way in peace.”

The order was a formal dismissal, permitting them to leave without further restraint. Paul, however, would not quietly depart, since the officials had violated the legal rights of Roman citizens and needed to acknowledge their wrongdoing publicly.

Act 28:18 They examined me and wanted to release me…

So the officers relayed this message to the magistrates,

The officers carried Paul’s demand for proper release to the city’s duumviri, the chief magistrates of Philippi. Having ordered the beating and imprisonment of Paul and Silas without a trial, the magistrates now faced the consequences of their unlawful actions.
