John 3

Jesus and Nicodemus

Now there was a man of the Pharisees

The Pharisees were influential teachers and interpreters of Israel’s law, committed to preserving both the written Law and inherited traditions. Their concern for outward obedience often brought them into conflict with Jesus, who exposed hypocrisy and called for genuine righteousness.

named Nicodemus,

Nicodemus, whose Greek name means “victory of the people,” was a particular Pharisee whose encounter with Jesus reveals both his spiritual need and his growing recognition of Jesus’ authority.

a leader of the Jews.

As a member of Israel’s ruling council, likely the Sanhedrin, Nicodemus was educated, respected, and entrusted with religious leadership. Yet even a teacher of Israel needed the new birth that comes through faith in Christ.

He came to Jesus at night

Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the ruling council, sought Jesus privately. His visit at night may reflect caution because Jesus’ growing influence had become controversial among the religious leaders, while also fitting John’s contrast between darkness and the light Jesus brings.

He indicated that others had also recognized God’s hand in Jesus’ ministry, even if they were not prepared to confess Him openly.

Jhn 8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father,…

Nicodemus rightly understood that Jesus’ works showed God’s presence with Him, though he had not yet grasped the full truth that Jesus is the Son of God.

Jesus replied,

Jesus replied that no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again. He explained to Nicodemus that recognizing Jesus’ divine origin was not enough; entrance into God’s kingdom requires spiritual renewal.

Jhn 6:47 Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life.
Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…
Jhn 8:51 Truly, truly, I tell you, if anyone keeps My word…

no one can see the kingdom of God

God’s kingdom is His saving rule over those who belong to Him and will culminate in His future reign. Apart from God’s work in a person’s life, no one can truly perceive or enter that kingdom.

Mat 18:3 “Truly I tell you,” He said, “unless you change…”…
Mrk 10:15 Truly I tell you, anyone who does not receive…
Luk 18:17 Truly I tell you, anyone who does not receive…

unless he is born again.”

Entrance into God’s kingdom requires being born again (Greek anōthen, “from above”), a spiritual rebirth. God gives new life through the Holy Spirit, cleansing the sinner and creating a renewed heart that responds to Him in faith.

Tit 3:5 He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done…

“How can a man be born when he is old?”

Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the Jewish ruling council, struggles to understand Jesus’ teaching because he hears it in physical terms. His religious training emphasized descent from Abraham and obedience to the Law, not the necessity of a new beginning granted by God. Jesus’ words confront the assumption that age, learning, and religious standing can bring a person into God’s kingdom.

Gen 17:17 Abraham fell facedown. Then he laughed and said to himself…
Gen 18:11-14 And Abraham and Sarah were already old…
Luk 1:18 “How can I be sure of this?” Zechariah asked the angel.…

Nicodemus asked.

He came to Jesus at night, likely wishing to avoid public attention because Jesus was already controversial among the religious leaders. Yet his questions show genuine interest rather than open hostility. Nicodemus later speaks in Jesus’ defense before the council and helps prepare His body for burial, showing a developing response to Jesus.

Jhn 7:50-51 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier…
Jhn 19:39 Nicodemus, who had previously come to Jesus at night…
Luk 18:18-19 Then a certain ruler asked Him, “Good Teacher,”…

“Can he enter his mother’s womb a second time to be born?”

Nicodemus presses the physical impossibility of what he thinks Jesus means. He cannot see how an old man could begin life again. Jesus will explain that the new birth is not a second physical birth but the work of the Holy Spirit, who gives new life and makes a person fit for the kingdom of God.

Tit 3:5 He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done…

Flesh is born of flesh,

Human birth produces human life marked by mortality and the fallen condition inherited from Adam. Natural descent cannot overcome sin or bring a person into God’s kingdom.

Gal 4:23 His son by the slave woman was born according to the flesh,…
Rom 9:8 So it is not the children of the flesh…

but spirit is born of the Spirit.

The Holy Spirit gives new life to those who believe in Christ. This birth from above is God’s work, creating a renewed person able to know God and enter His kingdom.

Tit 3:5 He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done…

Do not be amazed

Nicodemus, a Pharisee and member of the ruling council, struggled to understand Jesus’ teaching because he assumed Israel’s heritage and obedience to the Law were sufficient for God’s kingdom. Jesus corrects that assumption.

Jhn 5:28-29 Do not be amazed at this, for the hour is coming…
1Pe 4:12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial…
1Jn 3:13 So do not be surprised, brothers, if the world hates you.

that I said,

Jesus speaks personally and with divine authority, calling Nicodemus to receive what He has revealed rather than rely on his religious standing or learning.

Jhn 14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father…
Jhn 12:49-50 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…
Jhn 8:28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man,…

‘You must be born again.’

Entrance into God’s kingdom requires more than physical descent from Abraham or outward religious observance. God must give a person new spiritual life, cleansing the heart and creating true obedience through the work of the Holy Spirit.

1Pe 1:23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed,…
Jhn 1:12-13 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed…
Tit 3:5 He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done…

The wind blows where it wishes.

The wind moves freely, beyond human control, providing an illustration of the Holy Spirit’s sovereign work. Though unseen, it is real and powerful.

Jer 10:13 When He thunders, the waters in the heavens roar;…
Jon 1:4 Then the LORD hurled a great wind upon the sea,…

You hear its sound,

Its presence is known by its effects. In the same way, the Spirit’s work becomes evident in the changed life of the one He renews.

Act 2:2 Suddenly a sound like a mighty rushing wind came from heaven…
Ezk 37:7 So I prophesied as I had been commanded.…
1Ki 19:11-12 Then the LORD said, “Go out and stand on the mountain…

but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going.

Human beings cannot trace or govern the Spirit’s work. God acts according to His own wisdom and purpose, often beyond what people can anticipate or explain.

Ecc 11:5 As you do not know the path of the wind,…
1Ki 18:12 I do not know where the Spirit of the LORD…
2Ki 2:16 “Look now,” they said to Elisha, “we your servants……

So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”

Spiritual birth is God’s work in giving new life to those who believe in Christ. It is not merely outward reform but an inward transformation that brings a person into the kingdom of God.

Tit 3:5 He saved us, not by the righteous deeds we had done…
Ezk 36:26-27 I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit…
1Pe 1:23 For you have been born again, not of perishable seed,…

“How can this be?”

Nicodemus struggles to understand Jesus’ teaching that a person must be born again. As a Pharisee and teacher of Israel, he understood Israel’s covenant privileges and the demands of the Law, but he had not grasped the necessity of inward renewal by the Spirit. He takes Jesus’ words in a physical sense, revealing how difficult it was for even respected religious leaders to recognize the spiritual reality Jesus was describing.

Luk 1:34 “How can this be,” Mary asked the angel…
Jhn 6:52 At this, the Jews began to argue among themselves……
Gen 18:14 Is anything too difficult for the LORD?…

Nicodemus asked.

Coming to Jesus at night, Nicodemus sought answers privately while remaining cautious of the opposition Jesus faced among the Jewish rulers. His question shows genuine confusion rather than open hostility. Though trained in the Scriptures, he needed Jesus to explain that entrance into God’s kingdom depends not on ancestry, learning, or outward religious observance, but on the new birth God gives.

Jhn 7:50-51 Nicodemus, who had gone to Jesus earlier…
Act 8:34 “Tell me,” said the eunuch, “who is the prophet talking about……
Mrk 10:17 As Jesus started on His way, a man ran up…

“You are Israel’s teacher,”

Nicodemus was a respected Pharisee and likely a member of the Sanhedrin, Israel’s governing council. His office required careful knowledge of the Law, the Prophets, and God’s promises to renew His people.

Rom 2:20 an instructor of the foolish, a teacher of infants,…

said Jesus,

Jesus spoke directly to Nicodemus’s responsibility as a spiritual leader. Though Nicodemus recognized Jesus as a teacher from God, he had not yet understood the spiritual nature of God’s kingdom.

Mrk 1:22 The people were astonished at His teaching…
Luk 4:32 They were astonished at His teaching, because His message…

“and you do not understand these things?

Jesus referred to the new birth and the work of the Holy Spirit. Israel’s Scriptures had foretold cleansing, a new heart, and God’s Spirit within His people. Nicodemus’s difficulty showed that religious learning alone could not produce spiritual understanding.

and yet you people do not accept our testimony.

Nicodemus and many other religious leaders possessed the Scriptures but resisted the clear revelation God was giving through His Son.

Jhn 5:43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you have not…

If I have told you about earthly things

Jesus had used the new birth and the work of the Spirit, illustrated by the wind, to explain realities Nicodemus could recognize from human experience, Scripture, and the observable signs of Jesus’ ministry. These matters were not merely physical, but they were presented through familiar earthly images.

Jas 3:15-17 Such wisdom does not come from above, but is earthly…
Php 3:19-20 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly,…

and you do not believe,

Nicodemus, though a Pharisee and teacher of Israel, had not accepted Jesus’ testimony. His hesitation reflected the wider inability of many religious leaders to recognize that God’s promised salvation required inward renewal rather than political deliverance or outward religious observance.

Psa 78:22 because they did not believe God or rely on His salvation.
Heb 3:19 So we see that it was because of their unbelief…

how will you believe if I tell you about heavenly things?

Greater truths concerning God’s eternal purpose, the Son’s descent from heaven, salvation through His sacrifice, and eternal life could not be understood apart from faith and the Spirit’s work. If Nicodemus resisted what Jesus had already made plain, he was not prepared to receive the fuller revelation of God’s kingdom.

Heb 9:23-24 So it was necessary for the copies of the heavenly things…

No one has ascended into heaven

Enoch and Elijah were taken by God, but neither entered heaven by personal power or returned with independent knowledge of its realities. No human being possesses firsthand authority over heavenly things.

the Son of Man.

Jesus identifies Himself with the Son of Man foretold in Daniel, the heavenly ruler to whom God gives everlasting dominion. As the Son of Man, He is truly human while possessing divine authority, standing uniquely between heaven and earth as God’s appointed Savior and King.

Dan 7:13-14 In my vision in the night I continued to watch, and I saw…
Mrk 14:62 “I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man…”…
Act 7:56 “Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man”…

Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness,

During Israel’s journey in the wilderness, the people rebelled against God and Moses, and the Lord sent venomous snakes among them. After they confessed their sin, God commanded Moses to make a bronze snake and place it on a pole. Those who had been bitten lived when they looked at it in faith. The bronze snake provided a God-appointed means of deliverance from judgment.

Num 21:4-9 Then they set out from Mount Hor along the route…
2Ki 18:4 He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars…
Deu 8:15 He led you through the vast and terrifying wilderness…

so the Son of Man must be lifted up,

Jesus, the Son of Man—a messianic title emphasizing both His humanity and divine authority—would be lifted up on the cross to bear sin and provide salvation. Like the Israelites who looked to the bronze snake and lived, those who look to Christ in faith receive eternal life. His crucifixion was necessary within God’s redemptive purpose and would lead to His resurrection and glory.

Jhn 8:28 So Jesus said, “When you have lifted up the Son of Man,…

For God so loved the world

God’s love reaches beyond Israel to people of every nation. His purpose to bless all nations, promised through Abraham, finds its fullest expression in the sending of Christ.

For God did not send His Son into the world

God took the initiative to rescue humanity by sending His eternal Son into a fallen world. Jesus came from the Father, fulfilling God’s long-promised purpose to provide redemption.

Rom 8:3 For what the law was powerless to do in that…

but to save the world through Him.

Salvation is found through Jesus alone, whose death and resurrection opened the way for sinners to be forgiven and restored to God. His saving work extends to people of every nation who believe in Him.

1Jn 4:14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent…
Heb 7:25 Therefore He is able to save completely those who draw near…
1Ti 1:15 This is a trustworthy saying, worthy of full acceptance:…

Whoever believes in Him is not condemned,

Faith in Jesus Christ brings forgiveness and acceptance before God. Such belief is more than acknowledging facts about Jesus; it is personal trust in Him as the Son of God and the Savior sent to redeem sinners. In the early church, this faith was openly identified with confession of Christ and baptism.

Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…
Rom 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those…
Rom 8:33-34 Who will bring any charge against God’s elect?…

but whoever does not believe has already been condemned,

Unbelief leaves a person under the judgment brought by sin. Condemnation is not merely a future outcome but the present condition of those who reject God’s provision of salvation in His Son.

Mrk 16:16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved…
Jhn 8:24 That is why I told you that you would die in your sins.…
2Th 1:8-9 in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance…

because he has not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son.

To believe in Jesus’ name—His character and authority—is to receive Him for who He is and submit to His authority. Jesus alone is God’s unique Son, fully revealing the Father and providing the only way of salvation.

1Jn 5:13 I have written these things to you who believe in the name…
Jhn 1:12 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed…
Jhn 20:31 But these are written so that you may believe…

And this is the verdict:

Jesus declares God’s judgment on humanity’s response to His coming. The issue is not a lack of revelation but the response to the revelation God has given.

Jesus and His disciples

(For John

At this time, John the Baptist was still carrying out his public ministry alongside Jesus’ early work in Judea. He had not yet been put in prison.

Herod Antipas later confined John for condemning his unlawful marriage to Herodias, ending John’s public ministry and leading eventually to his execution.

Luk 3:20 Herod added this to them all: He locked John up in prison.
Mrk 1:14 After the arrest of John, Jesus went into Galilee…
Mat 14:3 Now Herod had arrested John and bound him…

Then a dispute arose

A disagreement developed as John’s ministry continued alongside Jewish religious life.

Jhn 1:15 John testified concerning Him. He cried out, saying,…

The disciples saw Jesus’ increasing following as a threat to John’s ministry, but it confirmed that John’s task of preparing the way for Christ was being fulfilled.

Mat 4:25 Large crowds followed Him, having come from Galilee,…
Jhn 6:37 Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me,…

John replied,

John the Baptist answered his disciples after they noted Jesus’ growing ministry. He did not view Jesus as a rival, because he understood that his own work was to prepare Israel for the Messiah.

Jhn 1:26-27 “I baptize with water,” John replied, “but among you stands…
Luk 3:16 John answered all of them: “I baptize you with water”…
Jhn 1:30 This is He of whom I said, ‘A man who comes after me……

His calling, influence, and season of public ministry were gifts under God’s control. Jesus’ increasing prominence confirmed that John’s mission had been fulfilled.

but am sent ahead of Him.’

John had been appointed by God to prepare Israel for the Messiah through his call to repentance and baptism. His ministry pointed beyond itself to Jesus, whose arrival fulfilled the hope John had proclaimed.

Luk 1:17 And he will go on before the Lord in the spirit…
Mal 3:1 “Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way”…
Isa 40:3 A voice of one calling: “Prepare the way for the LORD…

The bride belongs to the bridegroom.

Marriage was a binding covenant, and the bride belonged exclusively to her husband. Scripture uses this picture for God’s covenant relationship with His people and, ultimately, Christ’s relationship with His Church. Jesus is the bridegroom; His people are not John’s followers or the possession of any human servant.

Sng 6:3 I belong to my beloved and he belongs to me;…
Isa 62:5 For as a young man marries a young woman,…
Rev 21:2 I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down…

The friend of the bridegroom stands and listens for him,

In Jewish wedding customs, the bridegroom’s friend assisted with arrangements and served the bridegroom’s interests. John identifies himself in that supporting role. He had prepared the people for the Messiah’s arrival and now stood aside as Jesus gathered those who belonged to Him.

Mat 9:15 Jesus replied, “How can the guests of the bridegroom mourn…
Luk 5:34-35 Jesus replied, “Can you make the guests of the bridegroom…

and is overjoyed to hear the bridegroom’s voice.

The bridegroom’s arrival and voice signaled that the wedding preparations had reached their intended end. John rejoiced because Jesus had come openly as the promised Messiah and had begun His public ministry.

Sng 2:8 Listen! My beloved approaches. Look! Here he comes…
Sng 5:2 I sleep, but my heart is awake. A sound! My beloved…
Luk 1:44 For as soon as the sound of your greeting reached my ears,…

That joy is mine, and it is now complete.

John’s work as the forerunner was fulfilled. Rather than competing with Jesus for followers, he found complete joy in Christ’s increasing prominence.

Jhn 15:11 I have told you these things so that My joy may be in you…
Jhn 16:24 Until now you have not asked for anything in My name.…
1Jn 1:4 We write these things so that our joy may be complete.

He must increase;

John the Baptist gladly acknowledged that Jesus’ ministry was surpassing his own. Sent to prepare the way for the Messiah, John understood that his work was temporary and that Jesus alone was the promised Christ. As Jesus gathered disciples and revealed His authority, John recognized the unfolding of God’s purpose.

Php 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place…
Col 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church;…
Eph 1:22-23 And God put everything under His feet and made Him head…

I must decrease.

Though John had drawn large crowds throughout Judea, he did not compete with Jesus for influence or honor. His declining prominence marked the completion of his ministry as the forerunner and pointed to the greater authority of Christ. John’s response showed humble obedience and confirmed that the age of promise was giving way to its fulfillment in the Messiah.

Mat 23:12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled,…
Jas 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.
1Pe 5:6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand,…

The One who comes from above is above all.

Jesus’ origin is heaven, not merely human descent. As the eternal Son sent by the Father, He possesses authority over every person, power, and created thing.

Jhn 8:23 Then He told them, “You are from below; I am from above.…
Eph 1:20-21 which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him…
Col 3:1-2 Therefore, since you have been raised with Christ,…

The one who is from the earth belongs to the earth and speaks as one from the earth.

John the Baptist recognizes the limits of his own role. Though appointed by God to prepare the way for the Messiah, he remains human and earthly, able to testify only to what God has revealed.

Ecc 5:2 Do not be quick to speak, and do not be hasty…
1Co 2:13 And this is what we speak, not in words…
1Co 15:47 The first man was of the dust of the earth,…

The One who comes from heaven is above all.

Jesus alone brings the full revelation of God because He has come from the Father. His authority surpasses that of every prophet and ruler, confirming that He is the promised Messiah and Lord.

Jhn 6:38 For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will…
Eph 4:10 He who descended is the very One who ascended above all…
Heb 7:26 Such a high priest truly befits us—One who is holy,…

He testifies to what He has seen and heard,

Jesus speaks from direct knowledge of the Father and the realities of heaven. Having come from above, He reveals God’s truth with an authority no earthly teacher or prophet could possess. His words do not arise from human tradition or speculation but from His eternal relationship with the Father.

Jhn 8:38 I speak of what I have seen in the presence of the Father.…
Jhn 8:26 I have much to say about you and much to judge…
Jhn 15:15 No longer do I call you servants, for a servant…

yet no one accepts His testimony.

Though many heard Him, the nation as a whole rejected His witness. Religious leaders opposed Him, and many in the crowds misunderstood or refused His claims. Their rejection exposed the unbelief of hearts unwilling to receive the One sent by God.

Jhn 5:43 I have come in My Father’s name, and you have not…
1Jn 5:10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony…
Jhn 1:11 He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.

Whoever accepts His testimony

Whoever accepts Jesus’ testimony confirms that God is true.

1Th 2:13 when you received the word of God that you heard from us…
Act 17:11 Now the Bereans were more noble-minded…
Jhn 8:47 Whoever belongs to God hears the words of God.…

has certified that God is truthful.

Faith in the Son affirms and acknowledges the truthfulness of the God who sent Him. God’s promises of salvation, forgiveness, and eternal life stand firm, and receiving Christ shows confidence in God’s faithful word.

1Jn 5:10 Whoever believes in the Son of God has this testimony…
Rom 3:4 Certainly not! Let God be true and every man a liar.…
Heb 6:18 Thus by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible…

For the One whom God has sent

Jesus Christ came from the Father with divine authority and a saving mission. He is more than a prophet: He is the Son of God, sent into the world to reveal the Father and accomplish redemption.

Jhn 8:42 Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father,…
Jhn 7:29 but I know Him, because I am from Him and He sent Me.”
Jhn 6:29 Jesus replied, “The work of God is this: to believe…

speaks the words of God,

Jesus faithfully declares all that the Father has given Him. His teaching carries God’s authority, reveals God’s truth, and gives eternal life to those who receive Him.

Jhn 12:49 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…
Jhn 14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father…
Deu 18:18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you…

for God gives the Spirit without limit.

The Father endowed the Son with the full presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Unlike earlier servants of God who received the Spirit for particular tasks, Jesus ministers in the Spirit’s fullness, revealing the unity of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Jhn 1:32-33 Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending…
Isa 42:1 Here is My Servant, whom I uphold, My Chosen One,…
Luk 4:18 The Spirit of the Lord is on Me, because He has anointed Me.…

The Father loves the Son

The Father’s love for the Son reveals their eternal unity and the perfect fellowship within the Godhead. It stands behind the Son’s coming into the world and His fulfillment of the Father’s saving purpose.

Jhn 5:20 The Father loves the Son and shows Him all He does.…
Jhn 17:24 Father, I want those You have given Me to be with Me…
Mat 3:17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved…

and has placed all things in His hands.

The Father has entrusted the Son with supreme authority over creation, judgment, and salvation. Jesus acts with the authority of God and serves as the appointed mediator between God and humanity.

Jhn 13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things…
Mat 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven…
Jhn 17:2 For You granted Him authority over all people,…

Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life.

Faith in Jesus is personal trust in Him as God’s Son and the promised Messiah. Eternal life begins with reconciliation to God and continues forever in His presence. It is not merely endless existence, but life restored under God’s rule.

1Jn 5:13 I have written these things to you who believe in the name…
Jhn 6:47 Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life.
Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…

Whoever rejects the Son will not see life.

To reject Jesus is to refuse the salvation God has provided through Him. Such rejection leaves a person separated from God and without the life found only in His Son.

1Jn 2:23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father…
Jhn 12:48 There is a judge for the one who rejects Me…
Jhn 8:24 That is why I told you that you would die in your sins.…

Instead, the wrath of God remains on him.”

God’s wrath is His righteous judgment against sin and unbelief. Apart from Christ, humanity remains under condemnation; through Christ’s atoning death, believers are delivered from that judgment.

Rom 2:5 But because of your hard and unrepentant heart,…
Col 3:6 Because of these, the wrath of God is coming…
Eph 2:3 All of us also lived among them at one time,…
