Acts 3
Berean Study Bible

A Lame Man Walks

One afternoon

The afternoon was one of the customary times of prayer in Jewish life, drawing worshipers to the temple for the evening sacrifice.

Act 10:3 One day at about the ninth hour, he had a clear vision…
1Ki 18:36 At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah…

Peter and John

These leading apostles often served together. Peter’s public leadership and John’s close witness to Jesus’ ministry strengthened their united testimony to the risen Christ.

Luk 22:8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations…
Act 8:14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that…

were going up to the temple

The temple remained the central place of worship in Jerusalem. The apostles continued to gather there, proclaiming that God’s promises to Israel had been fulfilled in Jesus.

Luk 18:10 Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee…
Jhn 7:14 About halfway through the feast, Jesus went up…

at the hour of prayer,

Regular prayer marked the devotion of the early believers and placed them among the crowds assembled for worship.

the ninth hour.

About 3:00 in the afternoon, this was the time of the evening sacrifice. It was also the hour of Jesus’ death, giving added significance to the apostles’ ministry in the temple.

Mrk 15:34 At the ninth hour, Jesus cried out in a loud voice,…
Mat 27:46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice…
Luk 23:44 It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness…

And a man who was lame from birth

The man’s inability to walk had existed throughout his life, leaving him dependent on others for mobility and support. His condition was well known, making the healing that follows publicly verifiable.

Act 14:8 In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet,…
2Sa 4:4 And Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame…
Jhn 9:1 Now as Jesus was passing by, He saw a man blind from birth,

was being carried to the temple gate called Beautiful,

He was brought to a prominent entrance of the temple complex, likely one frequented by worshipers entering for prayer. The gate’s location provided access to large crowds while placing him near the center of Israel’s worship.

Mrk 2:3 Then a paralytic was brought to Him, carried by four men.
Luk 5:18 Just then some men came carrying a paralyzed man on a mat.…
Psa 118:19-20 Open to me the gates of righteousness,…

where he was put every day to beg

Without modern social support or the ability to work in many occupations, he depended on alms for daily survival. Those who carried him participated in his care by bringing him regularly to the same place.

Jhn 9:8 At this, his neighbors and those who had formerly seen him…
Luk 18:35 As Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting…
Mrk 10:46 Next, they came to Jericho. And as Jesus and His disciples…

from those entering the temple courts.

Worshipers coming to the temple were expected to show generosity toward the needy. The setting prepares for Peter and John’s encounter with a man whose need was greater than money and whose healing would point to the risen Christ.

Mat 21:12 Then Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out…
Luk 18:10 Two men went up to the temple to pray. One was a Pharisee…
Psa 84:2 My soul longs, even faints, for the courts of the LORD;…

When he saw Peter and John about to enter,

Seeing Peter and John about to enter the temple courts, the lame man asked them for money.

Act 10:25-26 As Peter was about to enter, Cornelius met him…
Jhn 20:3-6 Then Peter and the other disciple set out for the tomb.…
Jhn 5:6-7 When Jesus saw him lying there and realized…

he asked them for money.

Unable to work because he had been lame from birth, he depended on alms from temple visitors. Giving to the poor was an established duty among Israel, and he expected ordinary financial help. His request, however, became the occasion for a greater act of healing through the name and power of Jesus Christ.

Mrk 10:46-47 Next, they came to Jericho. And as Jesus and His disciples…
Jhn 9:8-9 At this, his neighbors and those who had formerly seen him…
Luk 18:35-38 As Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting…

Peter looked directly at him,

Peter did not overlook a man whom others likely passed without notice. As the man sat begging at the temple gate, Peter gave him his personal attention.

Act 14:9 This man was listening to the words of Paul…
Act 13:9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled…
Act 1:10 They were looking intently into the sky…

as did John.

Both apostles shared in the encounter and stood together as witnesses to what God was about to do.

Act 8:14 When the apostles in Jerusalem heard that…
Luk 22:8 Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations…
Luk 9:28 About eight days after Jesus had said these things,…

“Look at us!” said Peter.

Peter called the man’s attention away from his expectation of money, establishing a personal connection through eye contact, and prepared him to receive what the apostles, in Jesus’ name, would give him.

Luk 24:39 Look at My hands and My feet. It is I Myself.…
Jhn 20:27 Then Jesus said to Thomas, “Put your finger here.”…
Jhn 1:39 “Come and see,” He replied. So they went and saw…

So the man gave them his attention,

The lame beggar looked to Peter and John with the hope of receiving alms. Stationed daily at the temple gate, he depended on the generosity of those entering to worship.

Act 8:6 The crowds all paid close attention to Philip’s message…
Luk 4:20 Then He rolled up the scroll, returned it to the attendant,…
Act 13:9 Then Saul, who was also called Paul, filled…

expecting to receive something from them.

He anticipated money, but God was about to provide far more than material support. Through Peter, the risen Christ would restore his ability to walk, publicly displaying His power and bringing immediate praise to God.

Luk 6:34 And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment…
Psa 104:27-28 All creatures look to You to give them their food…
Psa 123:2 As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master…

But Peter said,

Peter spoke as the leading apostolic witness, addressing the man at the temple gate shortly after Pentecost and the growth of the Jerusalem church.

Act 9:34 “Aeneas,” Peter said to him, “Jesus Christ heals you!”…
Act 9:40 Then Peter sent them all out of the room.…

“Silver or gold I do not have,

Though believers shared resources and cared for those in need, Peter and John possessed no money to give the beggar.

Mat 10:9 Do not take along any gold or silver or copper…
Luk 9:3 “Take nothing for the journey,” He told them, “no staff,…

but what I have I give you:

Peter offered what God had entrusted to him: the authority to minister in Jesus’ name and proclaim the risen Christ.

Mat 10:8 Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse the lepers…
Mrk 6:41-42 Taking the five loaves and the two fish…

In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth,

The healing came by the authority of Jesus, the crucified and risen Messiah from Nazareth, not through Peter’s personal power.

Act 4:10 let this be known to all of you and to all the people…
Act 4:12 Salvation exists in no one else, for there is no other…
Mrk 16:17-18 And these signs will accompany those who believe:…

get up and walk!”

The command brought immediate healing to a man lame from birth. His restoration confirmed the apostles’ witness to Jesus’ resurrection and displayed the promised work of God’s kingdom.

Jhn 5:8-9 Then Jesus told him, “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.”…
Mrk 2:11-12 “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”…

Taking him by the right hand,

Peter’s touch showed personal care and confidence that Jesus would do what he had promised. Rather than merely speaking from a distance, he identified with the man’s need and acted in the authority of Jesus’ name.

Mrk 1:31 So He went to her, took her by the hand…
Mrk 5:41 Taking her by the hand, Jesus said, “Talitha koum!”…
Mat 14:31 Immediately Jesus reached out His hand and took hold…

Peter helped him up,

The man had been unable to stand from birth, so Peter’s assistance made clear that he expected a real and immediate recovery. The apostles continued Christ’s work as witnesses empowered by the Holy Spirit, directing attention not to themselves but to the risen Lord.

Luk 5:24 But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority……
Mrk 2:11 “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”
Act 14:10 In a loud voice Paul called out, “Stand up on your feet!”…

and at once the man’s feet and ankles were made strong.

The healing was complete and instantaneous. The joints and muscles that had never supported him were restored without treatment or delay. His recovery demonstrated God’s power and confirmed the message Peter would proclaim: Jesus Christ, rejected and crucified, had risen and was still at work among his people.

Act 14:8-10 In Lystra there sat a man crippled in his feet,…
Isa 35:3 Strengthen the limp hands and steady the feeble knees!
Heb 12:12-13 Therefore strengthen your limp hands and weak knees.…

He sprang to his feet and began to walk.

The man, lame from birth, was healed immediately and completely through the power of Jesus Christ. His ability to stand and walk without assistance demonstrated that no gradual recovery or natural explanation accounted for what had occurred.

Act 14:10 In a loud voice Paul called out, “Stand up on your feet!”…
Jhn 5:8-9 Then Jesus told him, “Get up, pick up your mat, and walk.”…
Mrk 2:11-12 “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”…

Then he went with them into the temple courts,

Having been restored physically, he entered the place of public worship with Peter and John. His presence in the temple showed that the healing was known openly and that he had been brought from helplessness into full participation in the life of the community.

Act 2:46 With one accord they continued to meet daily…
Psa 100:4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise…
Psa 122:1 I was glad when they said to me, “Let us go…

walking and leaping and praising God.

His joyful movement made the miracle visible to everyone present, while his praise rightly gave God the glory. The healing testified to the risen Christ’s authority working through His apostles and prepared the gathered people to hear Peter’s message.

When all the people

“All the people” refers to the crowd gathered in the temple courts, many of whom recognized the man who had long begged at the Beautiful Gate. They witnessed his healing and knew his former condition.

Luk 18:43 Immediately he received his sight and followed Jesus…
Mat 15:31 The crowd was amazed when they saw the mute speaking…
Act 4:16 “What shall we do with these men?” they asked.…

They saw him walking, a complete restoration of the man who had been lame from birth and was formerly carried daily to the temple gate.

Mrk 2:11-12 “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”…

and praising God,

The phrase “and praising God” shows that he gave God the credit for what had happened. His response directed attention away from himself and the apostles to the Lord whose power had healed him.

Luk 5:25-26 And immediately the man stood up before them,…
Luk 17:15-18 When one of them saw that he was healed, he came back,…
Act 16:25 About midnight Paul and Silas were praying.…

they recognized him as the man

He was well known to regular worshippers at the temple, having begged there for a long time. Their recognition confirmed that the healed man was the same person who had been unable to walk.

Jhn 9:20-21 His parents answered, “We know he is our son,…

who used to sit begging

Unable to support himself because of his disability, he depended on alms from those entering the temple. Beggars often gathered near places of worship, where worshippers were especially likely to give.

Mrk 10:46 Next, they came to Jericho. And as Jesus and His disciples…
Luk 18:35 As Jesus drew near to Jericho, a blind man was sitting…
Luk 16:20-21 And a beggar named Lazarus lay at his gate…

at the Beautiful Gate of the temple,

This prominent entrance drew large numbers of people going to pray, making it a practical location for begging. The public setting also meant that many witnesses knew the man’s former condition.

Psa 118:19-20 Open to me the gates of righteousness,…
Psa 24:7-10 Lift up your heads, O gates! Be lifted up, O ancient doors,…
Psa 27:4 One thing I have asked of the LORD; this is what I desire:…

and they were filled with wonder and amazement

The crowd could not dismiss what they had seen. A man known for lifelong helplessness was now walking, and the miracle displayed God’s power at work through Peter and John.

Mrk 2:12 And immediately the man got up, picked up his mat…
Luk 5:26 Everyone was taken with amazement and glorified God.…
Mrk 7:37 The people were utterly astonished and said,…

Peter Speaks in Solomon’s Colonnade

While the man clung to Peter and John,

The man who had been healed clung to Peter and John, overwhelmed by the sudden restoration of his strength. His gratitude and amazement drew public attention to the miracle, confirming that Jesus continued His work through His apostles.

all the people were astonished

All the people were astonished because they had known the man as lame and dependent on alms. His complete healing could not be dismissed as temporary, and the crowd recognized that an extraordinary act of God had occurred.

Luk 5:26 Everyone was taken with amazement and glorified God.…
Act 2:7 Astounded and amazed, they asked, “Are not all these…

and ran to them

Eager to see the healed man and learn how such a miracle had taken place, the people ran to Peter and John. Their gathering gave Peter the opportunity to direct attention away from himself and John and to proclaim Jesus Christ.

Act 8:30 So Philip ran up and heard the man reading Isaiah…

in the walkway called Solomon’s Colonnade.

This covered porch along the temple complex was a familiar public gathering place where Jesus had taught and where the early believers later met. The miracle occurred openly before worshipers and visitors, making the apostles’ witness to Christ impossible to ignore.

Jhn 10:23 Jesus was walking in the temple courts…
Act 5:12 The apostles performed many signs and wonders…

And when Peter saw this, he addressed the people:

Seeing the crowd’s amazement after the healing at the temple gate, Peter spoke at Solomon’s Colonnade, a covered area in the temple courts where people commonly gathered. He used the occasion to explain the source and purpose of the miracle.

Act 2:14 Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, lifted up his voice,…
Act 4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them,…

Luk 5:26 Everyone was taken with amazement and glorified God.…

The man’s restoration was evidence of Jesus’ power and of His resurrection. What the crowd had seen called for faith in Christ rather than admiration of the apostles.

Jesus’ resurrection and exaltation publicly vindicated Him after His rejection and death. He is God’s obedient Servant, whose suffering and victory fulfilled God’s redemptive plan.

Mat 12:18 Here is My Servant, whom I have chosen…
Php 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place…

You handed Him over and rejected Him before Pilate,

Peter directly confronts his audience with their part in Jesus’ condemnation. Though Roman authority carried out the sentence, Israel’s leaders and the crowd had rejected the One God sent.

Mat 27:2 They bound Him, led Him away, and handed Him over…
Mat 27:11-14 Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor…
Luk 23:18-23 But they all cried out in unison: “Away with this man!…

even though he had decided to release Him.

Pilate found no deserving charge against Jesus and initially sought His release. Jesus’ death was therefore an injustice committed by men, yet it unfolded according to God’s determined purpose.

Luk 23:14-16 and said to them, “You brought me this man…
Luk 23:20 Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate addressed them again,
Jhn 19:4 Once again Pilate came out and said to the Jews,…

You rejected the Holy and Righteous One

Peter charged the people of Jerusalem with rejecting Jesus, though He was innocent, sinless, and fully righteous before God. Israel’s leaders delivered Him to Pilate and denied the Messiah they had expected, treating Him as unworthy of life.

Jhn 6:69 We believe and know that You are the Holy One of God.”
1Jn 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you……

and asked that a murderer be released to you.

Before the Passover feast, Pilate offered the crowd the customary release of a prisoner. They chose Barabbas, an insurrectionist and murderer, instead of Jesus. The exchange sharply displays Jesus’ innocence and Barabbas’s guilt: the guilty man went free while the righteous One was condemned.

Luk 23:25 As they had requested, he released the one imprisoned…
Luk 23:18-19 But they all cried out in unison: “Away with this man!…
Mrk 15:7 And a man named Barabbas was imprisoned with the rebels…

You killed the Author of life,

Peter charged the leaders and people who rejected Jesus with responsibility for His death, though He was executed by Roman authority. Jesus, the giver and sustainer of life, was put to death by those who refused Him as the Messiah. Their rejection fulfilled the pattern of the suffering and rejected Servant foretold in Scripture.

but God raised Him from the dead,

God overturned the verdict of men by raising Jesus bodily from the grave. The resurrection confirmed Jesus’ identity, vindicated His ministry, and demonstrated His victory over sin and death.

1Co 15:15 In that case, we are also exposed as false witnesses…

By faith in the name of Jesus,

Jesus’ name carries His authority as the risen Messiah and Son of God. Peter identifies faith in Him, not human power, as the basis for the miracle.

1Jn 3:23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe…
Php 2:9-11 Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place…

The healed man had been lame from birth and was well known to those who entered the temple. His restoration could not be dismissed, since many had seen him begging at the gate called Beautiful.

Mrk 2:11-12 “I tell you, get up, pick up your mat, and go home.”…
Luk 5:25-26 And immediately the man stood up before them,…

It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through Him

Peter and John were not the source of the healing. The risen Jesus worked through them, and the faith involved rested on His power and was enabled by Him.

Jhn 1:12 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed…
Heb 12:2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author…
Rom 3:22 And this righteousness from God comes through faith…

that has given him this complete healing in your presence.

The man’s strength was fully restored before a public crowd. His healing confirmed the apostles’ witness that Jesus, though crucified, had risen and continued to act through His servants.

Act 4:14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing there,…
Luk 17:19 Then Jesus said to him, “Rise and go; your faith”…
Mrk 5:34 “Daughter,” said Jesus, “your faith has healed you.”…

And now, brothers,

Peter addresses the crowd as fellow Israelites, maintaining a personal bond even after confronting their part in Jesus’ death. The message of repentance is directed to those within Israel who had witnessed the events surrounding Jesus’ ministry and crucifixion.

Act 13:26 Brothers, children of Abraham, and you Gentiles who fear God…
Act 22:1 “Brothers and fathers, listen now to my defense before you.”
Act 7:2 And Stephen declared: “Brothers and fathers, listen to me!…

I know that you acted in ignorance,

The people had not understood that Jesus was the promised Messiah and the Holy One sent by God. Their lack of understanding did not remove their responsibility, but it left room for forgiveness through repentance.

The religious authorities who rejected and delivered Jesus to be crucified also failed to recognize God’s purpose in Him. Their actions fulfilled what God had foretold concerning the suffering of the Messiah, while still leaving them accountable for their rejection of Him.

what He foretold through all the prophets,

The prophetic witness consistently anticipated God’s promised Deliverer and the salvation He would accomplish. Jesus’ ministry and death fulfilled that united testimony.

The Messiah’s suffering was necessary to bear sin and accomplish atonement. His death was not a defeat or an unexpected reversal, but the fulfillment of God’s revealed plan.

Isa 53:7 He was oppressed and afflicted, yet He did not open…
Psa 22:16 For dogs surround me; a band of evil men encircles me;…

Repent, then, and turn back,

Peter calls the people of Jerusalem to turn from their rejection of Jesus and return to God in faith. Their repentance required a change of heart that acknowledged Jesus as the Messiah and submitted to God’s purpose revealed through Him, reflecting teshuvah, meaning to return to God. The call continues the message proclaimed by John the Baptist and Jesus at the beginning of their ministries.

Jol 2:12-13 “Yet even now,” declares the LORD, “return to Me…
Isa 55:6-7 Seek the LORD while He may be found; call on Him…
Ezk 18:30-32 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you…

so that your sins may be wiped away,

God offers complete forgiveness through the atoning work of Jesus Christ. Sin is not merely overlooked but wiped away—blotted out like ink erased from a parchment—as God fulfills His promise to forgive His people and remember their sins no more. Peter presents forgiveness as the result of turning to the risen Christ, whose death and resurrection provide the cleansing sinners need.

Isa 43:25 I, yes I, am He who blots out your transgressions…

that times of refreshing may come from the presence of the Lord,

Repentance opens the way for God’s restoring work among His people. Peter spoke to Israel after the healing of the lame man, calling the nation to turn from sin so that God’s promised blessing and renewal might come.

Psa 16:11 You have made known to me the path of life;…

and that He may send Jesus,

Israel’s repentance was connected with the future return of Jesus Christ. Though He had ascended to heaven, He will return openly and personally to complete God’s purposes for His people and establish His kingdom.

the Christ,

Jesus is the promised Messiah, the Christ, meaning “Anointed One,” Israel’s anointed King and Savior. His rejection and crucifixion did not overturn God’s plan; they fulfilled it, and His resurrection confirmed His identity and authority.

The Father had appointed Jesus as the Savior and Messiah for Israel, beginning with those who heard Peter’s sermon. God’s offer of forgiveness and restoration was therefore grounded in His deliberate redemptive purpose through Christ.

Heb 1:2 But in these last days He has spoken to us by His Son…
Heb 3:2 He was faithful to the One who appointed Him…
1Pe 1:20 He was known before the foundation of the world…

Heaven must take Him in

Jesus ascended bodily after His resurrection and now reigns at the Father’s right hand. His departure was not an absence from His people but the beginning of His heavenly ministry as the risen Messiah, awaiting the completion of God’s purposes.

until the time comes for the restoration of all things,

Christ will remain in heaven until His return, when God will bring His plan for creation to its appointed fulfillment. The restoration includes the renewal of the world, the removal of sin and its effects, and the full establishment of Christ’s righteous reign.

which God announced long ago through His holy prophets.

Israel’s prophets consistently foretold a coming age of peace, righteousness, restored worship, and the fulfillment of God’s covenant promises. Peter presents Jesus as the Messiah through whom these long-promised events will ultimately be accomplished.

Rom 1:2 The gospel He promised beforehand through His prophets…

For Moses said,

Peter appeals to Moses’ prophecy in Deuteronomy, grounding his message in Israel’s own Scriptures and expectations.

Act 7:37 This is the same Moses who told the Israelites,…
Jhn 5:46 If you had believed Moses, you would believe Me…

‘The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet

God would provide the promised prophet by His own purpose and authority.

like me

Like Moses, He would reveal God’s will and lead His people, yet He would surpass Moses as the Messiah.

Deu 34:10 Since that time, no prophet has risen in Israel…
Num 12:6-8 He said, “Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you…
Heb 3:1-6 Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling…

from among your brothers.

He would arise from Israel, fulfilling God’s covenant promises to the Jewish people.

You must listen to Him

His authority demands obedience, for He speaks God’s word.

Luk 9:35 And a voice came from the cloud, saying,…

Jesus’ teaching is not optional or selective; all He commands carries the authority of God.

Jhn 14:24 Whoever does not love Me does not keep My words.…
Jhn 17:8 For I have given them the words You gave Me,…

Everyone who does not listen to Him

Peter identifies Jesus as the prophet like Moses promised by God. Hearing Him requires accepting His authority and obeying His teaching.

Deu 18:19 And I will hold accountable anyone who does not listen…
Mat 17:5 While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped…
Heb 12:25 See to it that you do not refuse Him who speaks…

will be completely cut off

Rejecting God’s appointed Messiah brings judgment and complete cutting off—eternal separation from God. As under the covenant with Israel, deliberate refusal of God’s word results in exclusion from His blessing and salvation.

Num 15:30 But the person who sins defiantly, whether a native…
Lev 20:3 And I will set My face against that man and cut…
Lev 23:29 If anyone does not humble himself on this day,…

from among his people.’

God’s people are defined by faith in Christ, not merely by descent from Israel. Those who reject Him remain outside the covenant community and under God’s judgment.

Lev 17:4 instead of bringing it to the entrance…
Lev 7:20 If anyone who is unclean eats meat from the peace offering…

Indeed, all the prophets from Samuel on,

Samuel stood at the turning point from the era of the judges to Israel’s monarchy. He anointed Saul and later David, while calling the nation back to covenant faithfulness. From his time onward, God raised up prophets who addressed Israel’s rulers and people and bore witness to His promised salvation.

1Sa 3:20 So all Israel from Dan to Beersheba knew…
Act 13:20 All this took about 450 years. After this,…
Heb 11:32 And what more shall I say? Time will not allow me…

as many as have spoken,

Their messages formed a unified testimony. Though they ministered in different generations and circumstances, they warned of judgment, promised restoration, and pointed ahead to God’s coming King and kingdom.

2Pe 1:21 For no such prophecy was ever brought forth by the will…
Heb 1:1 On many past occasions and in many different ways,…

have proclaimed these days.

The arrival of Jesus, His death and resurrection, and the work of the Holy Spirit fulfilled what the prophets had foretold. Peter identifies the events surrounding Christ as the beginning of the promised age of salvation.

1Pe 1:10-12 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who foretold…
Rom 1:2 The gospel He promised beforehand through His prophets…
Luk 1:70 as He spoke through His holy prophets, those of ages past,

And you are sons of the prophets

Peter addressed Jewish hearers as heirs of Israel’s prophetic heritage. The prophets had preserved God’s revelation, called the nation to repentance, and announced the coming Messiah.

2Ki 6:1 Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha,…
2Ki 4:38 When Elisha returned to Gilgal, there was a famine…
2Ki 2:3 Then the sons of the prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha…

and of the covenant God made with your fathers

They also stood within the covenant promises given to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. God had set Israel apart and pledged to bring blessing to the nations through Abraham’s line.

Exo 2:24 So God heard their groaning, and He remembered His covenant…
Lev 26:42 then I will remember My covenant with Jacob…
Deu 29:13 and so that He may establish you today as His people…

when He said to Abraham,

God established this promise with Abraham, whose faith and obedience marked the beginning of the covenant people.

Gen 17:5-8 No longer will you be called Abram, but your name…
Gen 15:1-6 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram…
Heb 6:13-14 When God made His promise to Abraham, since He had no one…

‘Through your offspring all the families of the earth will be blessed.’

The promised offspring ultimately refers to Christ. Through Him, salvation and blessing extend beyond Israel to people from every nation.

Gen 12:3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those…
Gen 28:14 Your descendants will be like the dust of the earth,…
Gen 22:18 And through your offspring all nations of the earth…

When God raised up His Servant,

God raised Jesus from the dead, confirming Him as the Messiah and vindicating His suffering, death, and sacrifice for sin. Jesus fulfilled the promised Servant who would bear the sins of many and bring salvation through His obedience.

Act 5:30 The God of our fathers raised up Jesus,…
Act 13:33 He has fulfilled for us, their children…
Isa 52:13 Behold, My Servant will prosper; He will be raised…

He sent Him first to you

Peter addressed the people of Israel, who had received God’s covenants, prophets, and promises. Jesus came to Israel during His earthly ministry, and the gospel was first proclaimed in Jerusalem before spreading to the nations.

Act 13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly…
Rom 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power…
Mat 15:24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep”…

to bless you

God’s blessing comes through Jesus in forgiveness, restoration, and reconciliation with God. In Him, the promise that blessing would reach all peoples through Abraham’s offspring began to be fulfilled.

Gal 3:14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing…
Gal 3:8 The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles…
Gen 12:3 I will bless those who bless you and curse those…

by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”

The blessing of Christ includes repentance and a changed life. God calls each person to turn from sin and receive the salvation made available through His risen Servant.

2Ch 7:14 if My people who are called by My name humble themselves…
Ezk 18:30 Therefore, O house of Israel, I will judge you…
Isa 55:7 Let the wicked man forsake his way; let him return…
