1
Every
high priest
is appointed
from among
men
to represent
[them]
in matters
relating to
God,
to
offer
gifts
and
sacrifices
for
sins.
1
Πᾶς
γὰρ
ἀρχιερεὺς
ἐξ
ἀνθρώπων
λαμβανόμενος
ὑπὲρ
ἀνθρώπων
καθίσταται
τὰ
πρὸς
τὸν
Θεόν
ἵνα
προσφέρῃ
δῶρά
τε
καὶ
θυσίας
ὑπὲρ
ἁμαρτιῶν
2
He is able
to deal gently
with those who
are ignorant
and
misguided,
since
he himself
is beset by
weakness.
2
μετριοπαθεῖν
δυνάμενος
τοῖς
ἀγνοοῦσιν
καὶ
πλανωμένοις
ἐπεὶ
καὶ
αὐτὸς
περίκειται
ἀσθένειαν
3
That is why
he is obligated
to offer sacrifices
for
his own
sins,
as well as
for [the sins of]
the
people.
3
καὶ
δι’
αὐτὴν
ὀφείλει
καθὼς
περὶ
τοῦ
λαοῦ
οὕτως
καὶ
περὶ
αὑτοῦ*
προσφέρειν
περὶ
ἁμαρτιῶν
4
No
one
takes
[this]
honor
upon himself;
he must be called
by
God,
just as
Aaron
[was].
4
Καὶ
οὐχ
ἑαυτῷ
τις
λαμβάνει
τὴν
τιμήν
ἀλλὰ
καλούμενος
ὑπὸ
τοῦ
Θεοῦ
καθώσπερ
καὶ
Ἀαρών
5
So
also
Christ
did not take upon Himself the glory
of becoming
a high priest,
but [He was called]
by the [One who]
said
to
Him:
“You
are
My
Son;
today
I
have become Your Father.”
5
Οὕτως
καὶ
ὁ
Χριστὸς
οὐχ
ἑαυτὸν
ἐδόξασεν
γενηθῆναι
ἀρχιερέα
ἀλλ’
ὁ
λαλήσας
πρὸς
αὐτόν
Υἱός
μου
εἶ
σύ
ἐγὼ
σήμερον
γεγέννηκά
σε
6
And
in
another [passage]
[God] says:
“You [are]
a priest
forever
in
the
order
of Melchizedek.”
6
Καθὼς
καὶ
ἐν
ἑτέρῳ
λέγει
Σὺ
ἱερεὺς
εἰς
τὸν
αἰῶνα
κατὰ
τὴν
τάξιν
Μελχισέδεκ
7
During
the
days
of
[Jesus’]
earthly [life],
He offered up
prayers
and
petitions
with
loud
cries
and
tears
to
the [One who]
could
save
Him
from
death,
and
He was heard
because of
[His]
reverence.
7
Ὃς
ἐν
ταῖς
ἡμέραις
τῆς
σαρκὸς
αὐτοῦ
δεήσεις
τε
καὶ
ἱκετηρίας
πρὸς
τὸν
δυνάμενον
σῴζειν
αὐτὸν
ἐκ
θανάτου
μετὰ
κραυγῆς
ἰσχυρᾶς
καὶ
δακρύων
προσενέγκας
καὶ
εἰσακουσθεὶς
ἀπὸ
τῆς
εὐλαβείας
8
Although
He was
a Son,
He learned
obedience
from
what
He suffered.
8
καίπερ
ὢν
Υἱός
ἔμαθεν
ἀφ’
ὧν
ἔπαθεν
τὴν
ὑπακοήν
9
And
having been made perfect,
He became
[the] source
of eternal
salvation
to all
who
obey
Him
9
καὶ
τελειωθεὶς
ἐγένετο
πᾶσιν
τοῖς
ὑπακούουσιν
αὐτῷ
αἴτιος
σωτηρίας
αἰωνίου
10
[and] was designated
by
God [as]
high priest
in
the
order
of Melchizedek.
10
προσαγορευθεὶς
ὑπὸ
τοῦ
Θεοῦ
ἀρχιερεὺς
κατὰ
τὴν
τάξιν
Μελχισέδεκ
11
We [have]
much
to say
about
[this],
[but it is]
hard to explain,
because
you are
dull
of
hearing.
11
Περὶ
οὗ
πολὺς
ἡμῖν
ὁ
λόγος
καὶ
δυσερμήνευτος
λέγειν
ἐπεὶ
νωθροὶ
γεγόνατε
ταῖς

12
Although
by
[this]
time
you ought
to be
teachers,
you
need
[someone]
to reteach
you
the
basic
principles
of God’s
word.
You need
milk,
not
solid
food!
12
καὶ
γὰρ
ὀφείλοντες

[καὶ]

13
Everyone
who
lives on
milk
is [still]
an infant,
inexperienced
in [the] message
of righteousness.
13
πᾶς
γὰρ

14
But
solid
food
is
[for the] mature,
who
by
constant use
have
trained
[their]
sensibilities
to
distinguish
good
[from]
evil.
