David’s Last Song

1  וְאֵ֛לֶּה (And these are) דִּבְרֵ֥י (words) דָוִ֖ד (of David) הָאַֽחֲרֹנִ֑ים (the last):

נְאֻ֧ם (A declaration) דָּוִ֣ד (of David) בֶּן־ (son) יִשַׁ֗י (of Jesse)

וּנְאֻ֤ם (and a declaration) הַגֶּ֙בֶר֙ (of the mighty man) הֻ֣קַם (who was exalted) עָ֔ל (on high),

מְשִׁ֙יחַ֙ (the anointed) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (of the God) יַֽעֲקֹ֔ב (of Jacob),

וּנְעִ֖ים (and the sweet) זְמִר֥וֹת (psalmist) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel):

2  ר֥וּחַ (The Spirit) יְהוָ֖ה (of YHWH) דִּבֶּר־ (spoke) בִּ֑י (by me)

וּמִלָּת֖וֹ (and His word was) עַל־ (on) לְשׁוֹנִֽי׃ (my tongue).

3  אָמַר֙ (Spoke) אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel),

לִ֥י (to me) דִבֶּ֖ר (spoke) צ֣וּר (the Rock) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel):

מוֹשֵׁל֙ (He who rules) בָּאָדָ֔ם (over men) צַדִּ֕יק (is righteous),

מוֹשֵׁ֖ל (ruling) יִרְאַ֥ת (in the fear) אֱלֹהִֽים׃ (of God),

4  וּכְא֥וֹר (and as the light) בֹּ֖קֶר (of the morning), יִזְרַח־ (rises)

שָׁ֑מֶשׁ (the sun), בֹּ֚קֶר (a morning) לֹ֣א (without) עָב֔וֹת (clouds);

מִנֹּ֥גַהּ (by clear shining) מִמָּטָ֖ר (after rain),

דֶּ֥שֶׁא (the tender grass) מֵאָֽרֶץ׃ (of the earth).

5  כִּֽי־ (For) לֹא־ (not) כֵ֥ן (so) בֵּיתִ֖י (is my house) עִם־ (with) אֵ֑ל (God);

כִּי֩ (yet) בְרִ֨ית (a covenant) עוֹלָ֜ם (everlasting)

שָׂ֣ם (He has made) לִ֗י (with me)

עֲרוּכָ֤ה (ordered) בַכֹּל֙ (in all things) וּשְׁמֻרָ֔ה (and secure);

כִּֽי־ (for) כָל־ (this is all) יִשְׁעִ֥י (my salvation), וְכָל־ (and all) חֵ֖פֶץ (my desire),

כִּֽי־ (for) לֹ֥א (not) יַצְמִֽיחַ׃ (will He make it sprout)?

6  וּבְלִיַּ֕עַל (And the worthless), כְּק֥וֹץ (like a thorn) מֻנָ֖ד (are thrust away) כֻּלָּ֑הַם (all),

כִּֽי־ (because) לֹ֥א (not) בְיָ֖ד (in the hand) יִקָּֽחוּ׃ (can they be taken).

7  וְאִישׁ֙ (And the man) יִגַּ֣ע (who touches) בָּהֶ֔ם (them) יִמָּלֵ֥א (must be armed) בַרְזֶ֖ל (with iron)

וְעֵ֣ץ (and the shaft) חֲנִ֑ית (of a spear);

וּבָאֵ֕שׁ (and with the fire) שָׂר֥וֹף (burning) יִשָּׂרְפ֖וּ (they are burned)

בַּשָּֽׁבֶת׃פ (in the place).

(1 Chronicles 11:10–47)

8  אֵ֛לֶּה (These are) שְׁמ֥וֹת (the names) הַגִּבֹּרִ֖ים (of the mighty men) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (who were)

לְדָוִ֑ד (unto David): יֹשֵׁ֨ב (Josheb-) בַּשֶּׁ֜בֶת (basshebeth), תַּחְכְּמֹנִ֣י׀ (the Tahchemonite) רֹ֣אשׁ (was chief) הַשָּׁלִשִׁ֗י (of the three); ה֚וּא (He) עֲדִינ֣וֹ (was Adino) הָעֶצְנוֹ (the Eznite), עַל־ (because of) שְׁמֹנֶ֥ה (eight) מֵא֛וֹת (hundred), חָלָ֖ל (whom he killed) בְּפַ֥עַם (time). אֶחָד׃ס (At one)

9  וְאַחֲרוֹ (and after him) אֶלְעָזָ֥ר (was Eleazar) בֶּן־ (son) דֹּדִי (Dodo) בֶּן־ (the son) אֲחֹחִ֑י (of Ahohi), בִּשְׁלֹשָׁ֨ה (one of three) גִבֹּרִים (the mighty men) עִם־ (with) דָּוִ֗ד (David) בְּחָֽרְפָ֤ם (when they defied) בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּים (the Philistines) נֶאֶסְפוּ־ (who were gathered) שָׁ֣ם (there) לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה (for battle), וַֽיַּעֲל֖וּ (and had retreated) אִ֥ישׁ (the men) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel). 10  ה֣וּא (He) קָם֩ (arose) וַיַּ֨ךְ (and struck) בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֜ים (the Philistines) עַ֣ד׀ (until) כִּֽי־ (that) יָגְעָ֣ה (was weary) יָד֗וֹ (his hand) וַתִּדְבַּ֤ק (and stuck) יָדוֹ֙ (his hand) אֶל־ (to) הַחֶ֔רֶב (the sword), וַיַּ֧עַשׂ (and brought about) יְהוָ֛ה (YHWH) תְּשׁוּעָ֥ה (a victory) גְדוֹלָ֖ה (great) בַּיּ֣וֹם (day) הַה֑וּא (that), וְהָעָ֛ם (and the people) יָשֻׁ֥בוּ (returned) אַחֲרָ֖יו (after him) אַךְ־ (only) לְפַשֵּֽׁט׃ס (to plunder).

11  וְאַחֲרָ֛יו (And after him) שַׁמָּ֥א (was Shammah) בֶן־ (son) אָגֵ֖א (of Agee) הָרָרִ֑י (the Hararite). וַיֵּאָסְפ֨וּ (And had gathered together) פְלִשְׁתִּ֜ים (the Philistines) לַחַיָּ֗ה (into a troop), וַתְּהִי־ (and was) שָׁ֞ם (there) חֶלְקַ֤ת (a portion) הַשָּׂדֶה֙ (of the field) מְלֵאָ֣ה (full) עֲדָשִׁ֔ים (of lentils), וְהָעָ֥ם (and the people) נָ֖ס (fled) מִפְּנֵ֥י (from) פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ (the Philistines). 12  וַיִּתְיַצֵּ֤ב (And he stationed himself) בְּתוֹךְ־ (in the middle) הַֽחֶלְקָה֙ (of the field) וַיַּצִּילֶ֔הָ (and defended it) וַיַּ֖ךְ (and killed) אֶת־ (-) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים (the Philistines), וַיַּ֥עַשׂ (and brought about) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) תְּשׁוּעָ֥ה (a salvation) גְדוֹלָֽה׃ס (great).

13  וַיֵּרְד֨וּ (And went down) שְׁלֹשִׁים (three) מֵהַשְּׁלֹשִׁ֣ים (of the thirty) רֹ֗אשׁ (chief men) וַיָּבֹ֤אוּ (and came) אֶל־ (at) קָצִיר֙ (harvest time) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֔ד (David) אֶל־ (at) מְעָרַ֖ת (the cave) עֲדֻלָּ֑ם (of Adullam), וְחַיַּ֣ת (and the troop) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of Philistines) חֹנָ֖ה (was encamped) בְּעֵ֥מֶק (in the Valley) רְפָאִֽים׃ (of the Rephaim). 14  וְדָוִ֖ד (And David was) אָ֣ז (then) בַּמְּצוּדָ֑ה (in the stronghold), וּמַצַּ֣ב (and the garrison) פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים (of the Philistines) אָ֖ז (was then) בֵּ֥ית (at Beth-) לָֽחֶם׃ (lehem). 15  וַיִּתְאַוֶּ֥ה (And craved) דָוִ֖ד (David) וַיֹּאמַ֑ר (and he said), מִ֚י (Who) יַשְׁקֵ֣נִי (will give me a drink) מַ֔יִם (of water) מִבֹּ֥אר (from the well) בֵּֽית־ (of Beth-) לֶ֖חֶם (lehem), אֲשֶׁ֥ר (which is) בַּשָּֽׁעַר׃ (by the gate)?

16  וַיִּבְקְעוּ֩ (And broke) שְׁלֹ֨שֶׁת (three) הַגִּבֹּרִ֜ים (the mighty men) בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה (through the camp) פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים (of the Philistines), וַיִּֽשְׁאֲבוּ־ (and they drew) מַ֙יִם֙ (water) מִבֹּ֤אר (from the well) בֵּֽית־ (of Beth-) לֶ֙חֶם֙ (lehem) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that was) בַּשַּׁ֔עַר (by the gate), וַיִּשְׂא֖וּ (and they lifted it) וַיָּבִ֣אוּ (and brought it) אֶל־ (to) דָּוִ֑ד (David). וְלֹ֤א (And not) אָבָה֙ (he would) לִשְׁתּוֹתָ֔ם (drink it), וַיַּסֵּ֥ךְ (and he poured out) אֹתָ֖ם (it) לַֽיהוָֽה׃ (to YHWH). 17  וַיֹּ֡אמֶר (And he said), חָלִילָה֩ (Far be it) לִּ֨י (from me) יְהוָ֜ה (O YHWH) מֵעֲשֹׂ֣תִי (that I should do) זֹ֗את (this); הֲדַ֤ם (is it the blood) הָֽאֲנָשִׁים֙ (of the men) הַהֹלְכִ֣ים (who went) בְּנַפְשׁוֹתָ֔ם (with their lives)? וְלֹ֥א (And not) אָבָ֖ה (he would) לִשְׁתּוֹתָ֑ם (drink it).

אֵ֣לֶּה (These things) עָשׂ֔וּ (were done by) שְׁלֹ֖שֶׁת (three) הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃ס (the mighty men).

18  וַאֲבִישַׁ֞י (And Abishai) אֲחִ֣י׀ (the brother) יוֹאָ֣ב (of Joab), בֶּן־ (son) צְרוּיָ֗ה (of Zeruiah), ה֚וּא (was) רֹ֣אשׁ (chief) הַשְּׁלֹשִׁי (of the Three). וְהוּא֙ (And He) עוֹרֵ֣ר (lifted) אֶת־ (-) חֲנִית֔וֹ (his spear) עַל־ (against) שְׁלֹ֥שׁ (three) מֵא֖וֹת (hundred), חָלָ֑ל (slain) וְלוֹ־ (and he won) שֵׁ֖ם (a name) בַּשְּׁלֹשָֽׁה׃ (among these three). 19  מִן־ (-) הַשְּׁלֹשָׁה֙ (Of the three) הֲכִ֣י (is it not that) נִכְבָּ֔ד (he was more honored)? וַיְהִ֥י (And he became) לָהֶ֖ם (for them) לְשָׂ֑ר (as commander), וְעַד־ (and to) הַשְּׁלֹשָׁ֖ה (the three) לֹא־ (not) בָֽא׃ס (he did attain).

20  וּבְנָיָ֨הוּ (And Benaiah was) בֶן־ (son) יְהוֹיָדָ֧ע (of Jehoiada), בֶּן־ (son) אִֽישׁ־ (of a man) חַי (of valor) רַב־ (great) פְּעָלִ֖ים (in deeds) מִֽקַּבְצְאֵ֑ל (from Kabzeel). ה֣וּא (He) הִכָּ֗ה (struck down) אֵ֣ת (-) שְׁנֵ֤י (two) אֲרִאֵל֙ (lion-like ones) מוֹאָ֔ב (of Moab), וְ֠הוּא (and He) יָרַ֞ד (went down) וְהִכָּ֧ה (and killed) אֶֽת־ (-) הָאֲרִיַּה (a lion) בְּת֥וֹךְ (in the midst) הַבֹּ֖אר (of a pit) בְּי֥וֹם (on a day) הַשָּֽׁלֶג׃ (snowy). 21  וְהוּא־ (And he) הִכָּה֩ (killed) אֶת־ (-) אִ֨ישׁ (a man), מִצְרִ֜י (an Egyptian) אֲשֶׁר (who was) מַרְאֶ֗ה (of appearance), וּבְיַ֤ד (and in his hand) הַמִּצְרִי֙ (the Egyptian had) חֲנִ֔ית (a spear). וַיֵּ֥רֶד (And he went down) אֵלָ֖יו (to him) בַּשָּׁ֑בֶט (with a staff) וַיִּגְזֹ֤ל (and wrested) אֶֽת־ (-) הַחֲנִית֙ (the spear) מִיַּ֣ד (out of hand) הַמִּצְרִ֔י (of the Egyptian) וַיַּהַרְגֵ֖הוּ (and killed him) בַּחֲנִיתֽוֹ׃ (with his own spear). 22  אֵ֣לֶּה (These things) עָשָׂ֔ה (did) בְּנָיָ֖הוּ (Benaiah) בֶּן־ (son) יְהוֹיָדָ֑ע (of Jehoiada), וְלוֹ־ (and he won) שֵׁ֖ם (a name) בִּשְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה (among the three) הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃ (mighty men). 23  מִן־ (Among) הַשְּׁלֹשִׁ֣ים (the thirty) נִכְבָּ֔ד (he is honored) וְאֶל־ (and to) הַשְּׁלֹשָׁ֖ה (the three) לֹא־ (not) בָ֑א (he did attain). וַיְשִׂמֵ֥הוּ (And appointed him) דָוִ֖ד (David) אֶל־ (over) מִשְׁמַעְתּֽוֹ׃ס (his guard).

24  עֲשָׂה־ (Asah-) אֵ֥ל (el) אֲחִֽי־ (the brother) יוֹאָ֖ב (of Joab) בַּשְּׁלֹשִׁ֑ים (was among the thirty),

אֶלְחָנָ֥ן (Elhanan) בֶּן־ (son) דֹּד֖וֹ (of Dodo) בֵּ֥ית (of Beth-) לָֽחֶם׃ (lehem),

25  שַׁמָּה֙ (Shammah) הַֽחֲרֹדִ֔י (the Harodite),

אֱלִיקָ֖א (Elika) הַחֲרֹדִֽי׃ס (the Harodite),

26  חֶ֚לֶץ (Helez) הַפַּלְטִ֔י (the Paltite),

עִירָ֥א (Ira) בֶן־ (son) עִקֵּ֖שׁ (of Ikkesh) הַתְּקוֹעִֽי׃ס (the Tekoite),

27  אֲבִיעֶ֙זֶר֙ (Abiezer) הָֽעַנְּתֹתִ֔י (the Anathothite),

מְבֻנַּ֖י (Mebunnai) הַחֻשָׁתִֽי׃ס (the Hushathite),

28  צַלְמוֹן֙ (Zalmon) הָֽאֲחֹחִ֔י (the Ahohite),

מַהְרַ֖י (Maharai) הַנְּטֹפָתִֽי׃ס (the Netophathite),

29  חֵ֥לֶב (Heleb) בֶּֽן־ (son) בַּעֲנָ֖ה (of Baanah), הַנְּטֹפָתִ֑יס (the Netophathite),

אִתַּי֙ (Ittai) בֶּן־ (son) רִיבַ֔י (of Ribai) מִגִּבְעַ֖ת (from Gibeah) בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) בִנְיָמִֽן׃ס (of Benjamin),

30  בְּנָיָ֙הוּ֙ (Benaiah) פִּרְעָ֣תֹנִ֔י (a Pirathonite),

הִדַּ֖י (Hiddai) מִנַּ֥חֲלֵי (from the brooks) גָֽעַשׁ׃ס (of Gaash),

31  אֲבִֽי־ (Abi-) עַלְבוֹן֙ (albon) הָֽעַרְבָתִ֔י (the Arbathite),

עַזְמָ֖וֶת (Azmaveth) הַבַּרְחֻמִֽי׃ס (the Barhumite),

32  אֶלְיַחְבָּא֙ (Eliahba) הַשַּׁ֣עַלְבֹנִ֔י (the Shaalbonite),

בְּנֵ֥י (of the sons) יָשֵׁ֖ן (of Jashen),

יְהוֹנָתָֽן׃ס (Jonathan) 33  שַׁמָּה֙ (Shammah) הַֽהֲרָרִ֔י (the Hararite),

אֲחִיאָ֥ם (Ahiam) בֶּן־ (son) שָׁרָ֖ר (of Sharar) הָארָרִֽי׃ס (the Hararite),

34  אֱלִיפֶ֥לֶט (Eliphelet) בֶּן־ (son) אֲחַסְבַּ֖י (of Ahasbai) בֶּן־ (son) הַמַּֽעֲכָתִ֑יס (of the Maachathite),

אֱלִיעָ֥ם (Eliam) בֶּן־ (son) אֲחִיתֹ֖פֶל (of Ahithophel) הַגִּלֹנִֽי׃ס (the Gilonite),

35  חֶצְרוֹ (Hezro) הַֽכַּרְמְלִ֔י (the Carmelite),

פַּעֲרַ֖י (Paarai) הָאַרְבִּֽי׃ס (the Arbite),

36  יִגְאָ֤ל (Igal) בֶּן־ (son) נָתָן֙ (of Nathan) מִצֹּבָ֔הס (of Zobah)

בָּנִ֖י (Bani) הַגָּדִֽי׃ס (the Gadite),

37  צֶ֖לֶק (Zelek) הָעַמֹּנִ֑יס (the Ammonite),

נַחְרַי֙ (Naharai) הַבְּאֵ֣רֹתִ֔י (the Beerothite), נֹשְׂאֵי (bearer) כְּלֵ֖י (of the weapons) יוֹאָ֥ב (of Joab) בֶּן־ (son) צְרֻיָֽה׃ס (of Zeruiah),

38  עִירָא֙ (Ira) הַיִּתְרִ֔י (the Ithrite),

גָּרֵ֖ב (Gareb) הַיִּתְרִֽי׃ס (the Ithrite),

39  אֽוּרִיָּה֙ (and Uriah) הַֽחִתִּ֔י (the Hittite).

כֹּ֖ל (In all), שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים (were thirty) וְשִׁבְעָֽה׃פ (and seven).
