Teaching Sound Doctrine

1  Σὺ (You) δὲ (however) λάλει (speak) ἃ (the things that) πρέπει (are fitting for) τῇ (-) ὑγιαινούσῃ (sound) διδασκαλίᾳ (teaching).

2  Πρεσβύτας (Older men) νηφαλίους (sober-minded) εἶναι (are to be), σεμνούς (dignified), σώφρονας (sound-minded), ὑγιαίνοντας (being sound) τῇ (-) πίστει (in faith), τῇ (-) ἀγάπῃ (in love), τῇ (-) ὑπομονῇ (in endurance)· 3  πρεσβύτιδας (older women) ὡσαύτως (likewise) ἐν (in) καταστήματι (behavior) ἱεροπρεπεῖς (reverent), μὴ (not) διαβόλους (slanderers) μηδὲ (not) οἴνῳ (to wine) πολλῷ (much) δεδουλωμένας (being enslaved), καλοδιδασκάλους (teachers of good), 4  ἵνα (so that) σωφρονίζωσιν (they may make sober-minded) τὰς (the) νέας (young women) φιλάνδρους (lovers of their husbands) εἶναι (to be), φιλοτέκνους (lovers of their children), 5  σώφρονας (sound-minded), ἁγνάς (pure), οἰκουργούς (keepers at home), ἀγαθάς (good), ὑποτασσομένας (being subject) τοῖς (to their) ἰδίοις (own) ἀνδράσιν (husbands), ἵνα (so that) μὴ (not) ὁ (the) λόγος (word) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) βλασφημῆται (may be blasphemed).

6  Τοὺς (The) νεωτέρους (younger men) ὡσαύτως (likewise) παρακάλει (exhort) σωφρονεῖν (to be sound-minded)

7  Περὶ (Concerning) πάντα (all things), σεαυτὸν (yourself) παρεχόμενος (be holding forth) τύπον (as a pattern) καλῶν (of good) ἔργων (works), ἐν (in) τῇ (the) διδασκαλίᾳ (teaching) ἀφθορίαν (incorruptibility), σεμνότητα (dignity), 8  λόγον (speech) ὑγιῆ (sound) ἀκατάγνωστον (uncondemnable), ἵνα (so that) ὁ (the one) ἐξ (of the) ἐναντίας (contrary) ἐντραπῇ (should be ashamed) μηδὲν (nothing) ἔχων (having) λέγειν (to say) περὶ (concerning) ἡμῶν (us) φαῦλον (evil).

9  Δούλους (Slaves) ἰδίοις (to their own) δεσπόταις (masters) ὑποτάσσεσθαι (are to be subject) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (everything), εὐαρέστους (well-pleasing) εἶναι (to be), μὴ (not) ἀντιλέγοντας (contradicting), 10  μὴ (not) νοσφιζομένους (pilfering), ἀλλὰ (but) πᾶσαν (all) πίστιν (faithfulness) ἐνδεικνυμένους (demonstrating) ἀγαθήν (good), ἵνα (so that) τὴν (the) διδασκαλίαν (teaching) τὴν (of) τοῦ (the) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us) Θεοῦ (God) κοσμῶσιν (they may adorn) ἐν (in) πᾶσιν (all things).

God’s Grace Brings Salvation

11  Ἐπεφάνη (Has appeared) γὰρ (for) ἡ (the) χάρις (grace) τοῦ (-) Θεοῦ (of God) σωτήριος (bringing salvation) πᾶσιν (to all) ἀνθρώποις (men), 12  παιδεύουσα (instructing) ἡμᾶς (us), ἵνα (that) ἀρνησάμενοι (having denied) τὴν (-) ἀσέβειαν (ungodliness) καὶ (and) τὰς (-) κοσμικὰς (worldly) ἐπιθυμίας (passions) σωφρόνως (sound-mindedly) καὶ (and) δικαίως (righteously) καὶ (and) εὐσεβῶς (godlily) ζήσωμεν (we should live) ἐν (in) τῷ (the) νῦν (present) αἰῶνι (age), 13  προσδεχόμενοι (awaiting) τὴν (the) μακαρίαν (blessed) ἐλπίδα (hope) καὶ (and) ἐπιφάνειαν (appearing) τῆς (of the) δόξης (glory) τοῦ (of the) μεγάλου (great) Θεοῦ (God) καὶ (and) Σωτῆρος (Savior) ἡμῶν (of us) Ἰησοῦ (Jesus) Χριστοῦ (Christ), 14  ὃς (who) ἔδωκεν (gave) ἑαυτὸν (Himself) ὑπὲρ (for) ἡμῶν (us) ἵνα (that) λυτρώσηται (He might redeem) ἡμᾶς (us) ἀπὸ (from) πάσης (all) ἀνομίας (lawlessness) καὶ (and) καθαρίσῃ (might purify) ἑαυτῷ (to Himself) λαὸν (a people) περιούσιον (specially His), ζηλωτὴν (zealous) καλῶν (for good) ἔργων (works).

15  Ταῦτα (These things) λάλει (speak) καὶ (and) παρακάλει (exhort) καὶ (and) ἔλεγχε (convict) μετὰ (with) πάσης (all) ἐπιταγῆς (authority)· μηδείς (No one) σου (you) περιφρονείτω (let despise).
