Judgment on the Ammonites

Concerning the Ammonites, this is what the LORD says:

The Ammonites, descendants of Lot, lived east of the Jordan and repeatedly opposed Israel. The LORD announces His judgment against a nation that had seized land belonging to Israel.

Ezk 25:2-7 Son of man, set your face against the Ammonites…
Amo 1:13-15 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions…
Zep 2:8-11 I have heard the reproach of Moab and the insults…

“Has Israel no sons?

Israel still had descendants and a rightful claim to the inheritance God had given the tribes. Ammon’s occupation of the land treated Israel as though its people and covenant inheritance had ceased.

Num 27:1-11 Now the daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher…

Is he without heir?

Though Israel had suffered judgment, exile did not cancel God’s promises or remove Israel’s claim to its allotted territory.

Rut 4:5-10 Then Boaz said, “On the day you buy the land……
Deu 21:15-17 If a man has two wives, one beloved and the other unloved…

Why then has Milcom taken possession of Gad?

Milcom was the chief god of Ammon. By naming the idol as the possessor of Gad, the LORD exposes Ammon’s claim as rebellion against Him. The territory of Gad had been weakened and vulnerable after Israel’s defeats, and the Ammonites had moved into its cities.

Jos 13:24-28 This is what Moses had given to the clans…
Jdg 11:12-13 Then Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites…
1Ki 11:5-7 Solomon followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians…

Why have his people settled in their cities?

Ammonite settlers occupied towns that belonged to Gad, claiming them for their god and nation. Their apparent success would not stand, for the LORD would judge Ammon and later restore the captives of His people.

Jdg 10:6-9 And again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD.…
Jdg 11:14-18 Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites…

Therefore, behold, the days are coming, declares the LORD,

God announces a certain future judgment, demonstrating His rule over the nations and the course of history.

when I will sound the battle cry against Rabbah of the Ammonites.

Rabbah, the Ammonite capital east of the Jordan, had long represented a people hostile to Israel. The coming attack would not be merely political or military but the execution of God’s judgment.

Ezk 21:20 Mark out one road for the sword to come against Rabbah…
Amo 1:13-15 This is what the LORD says: “For three transgressions…
Ezk 25:5 I will make Rabbah a pasture for camels,…

It will become a heap of ruins, and its villages will be burned.

The destruction would extend from the capital to the surrounding towns, leaving Ammon’s strength and security shattered.

Mic 1:6 Therefore I will make Samaria a heap of rubble…
Isa 34:9-10 Edom’s streams will be turned to tar, and her soil to sulfur…

Those who had taken advantage of Israel’s weakness would lose their hold, and Israel would recover what had been seized from them.

Num 33:52-53 you must drive out before you all the inhabitants…
Exo 23:30-31 Little by little I will drive them out ahead of you,…

Isa 15:4 Heshbon and Elealeh cry out; their voices…
Isa 16:8 For the fields of Heshbon have withered,…

Rabbah, Ammon’s chief city, represents the nation’s people, who will face the loss of their homes and security.

1Ki 11:5 Solomon followed Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians…
1Ki 11:33 For they have forsaken Me to worship Ashtoreth…

Psa 65:9-13 You attend to the earth and water it; with abundance…

O faithless daughter?

Ammon is portrayed as a rebellious daughter, prosperous but unfaithful in its conduct and idolatry. Though descended from Lot, the nation had long opposed Israel and trusted its own strength.

Isa 1:21 See how the faithful city has become a harlot!…

Enemies on every side would threaten Ammon, leaving the nation surrounded and vulnerable. Babylon’s expanding power would become the chief instrument of this judgment.

Ezk 28:24 For the people of Israel will no longer face a painful thorn…
Zep 2:8 I have heard the reproach of Moab and the insults…

You will each be driven headlong,

Ezk 34:5-6 They were scattered for lack of a shepherd,…

Yet afterward

Judgment would not be God’s final word concerning Ammon. After the devastation brought upon the nation, a future restoration was promised.

Judgment on Edom

Concerning Edom, this is what the LORD of Hosts says:

Edom descended from Esau and occupied territory south and east of Judah. Its long history of hostility toward Israel made it a fitting object of divine judgment. The LORD of Hosts speaks as the ruler over every nation, declaring that Edom’s strength, reputation, and security cannot shield it from His sentence.

Oba 1:1-4 This is what the Lord GOD says about Edom…
Ezk 25:12-14 This is what the Lord GOD says: ‘Because Edom acted…
Mal 1:2-4 “I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you ask……

“Is there no longer wisdom in Teman?

Teman, an important Edomite city, was known for its sages and counsel. God’s question exposes the collapse of the wisdom in which Edom trusted. Those celebrated for insight would be unable to recognize the danger approaching or devise a way to escape it.

Oba 1:8-9 In that day, declares the LORD, will I not destroy…
Job 2:11 Now when Job’s three friends came from their homes…
Job 4:1-2 Then Eliphaz the Temanite replied:…

Has counsel perished from the prudent?

Edom’s leaders would prove powerless to guide the nation through judgment. Political skill, military planning, and human prudence would fail because the Lord had determined its downfall.

2Sa 17:14 Then Absalom and all the men of Israel said,…
Isa 19:11-13 The princes of Zoan are mere fools; Pharaoh’s wise counselors…
Psa 33:10-11 The LORD frustrates the plans of the nations;…

Has their wisdom decayed?

The loss of wisdom points to Edom’s deeper moral failure. Pride had corrupted its judgment, leaving the nation without sound direction as destruction drew near.

Jer 8:8-9 How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the Law of the LORD…
Isa 29:14 Therefore I will again confound these people with wonder…
1Co 1:19-20 For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;…

Turn and run!

Edom’s approaching judgment demanded immediate escape. The danger was not distant but appointed by God.

Jer 48:6 Flee! Run for your lives! Become like a juniper…
Gen 19:17 As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said,…
Isa 48:20 Leave Babylon! Flee from the Chaldeans! Declare it…

Lie low, O dwellers of Dedan,

Dedan, a people of northern Arabia with trade connections to Edom, was warned to seek concealment rather than be drawn into Edom’s downfall.

Isa 21:13-15 This is the burden against Arabia: In the thickets of Arabia…
Jer 25:23 Dedan, Tema, Buz, and all who cut the corners of their hair;
Ezk 25:13 and from Teman to Dedan they will fall by the sword…

for I will bring disaster on Esau

Esau represents Edom, the nation descended from Jacob’s brother. God would judge Edom for its enduring pride and hostility toward Israel.

Mal 1:2-4 “I have loved you,” says the LORD. But you ask……
Oba 1:6-9 But how Esau will be pillaged, his hidden treasures…
Ezk 35:3-4 This is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I am against you,…

at the time I punish him.

The judgment would come at God’s determined time and could not be avoided.

Jer 46:21 Even the mercenaries among her are like fattened calves.…
Isa 10:3 What will you do on the day of reckoning…
Hos 9:7 The days of punishment have come; the days of retribution…

If grape gatherers came to you, would they not leave some gleanings?

Harvesters ordinarily left a portion of the crop behind for the poor and the foreigner to gather. Even a careful vineyard harvest allowed for remnants. Edom, however, would not receive such mercy; the coming judgment would leave no reserve or recovery.

Oba 1:5 If thieves came to you, if robbers by night—…
Deu 24:21 When you gather the grapes of your vineyard,…
Lev 19:10 You must not strip your vineyard bare…

Were thieves to come in the night, would they not steal only what they wanted?

Thieves take what is valuable and portable, leaving much behind. The destruction appointed for Edom would be far more complete than a robbery, reaching beyond its wealth to its security, strength, and future.

1Th 5:2 For you are fully aware that the Day of the Lord…
Pro 6:30-31 Men do not despise the thief if he steals…
Job 24:14-16 When daylight is gone, the murderer rises to kill…

But I will strip Esau bare;

God announces judgment on Edom, the nation descended from Esau. Its mountain strongholds, wealth, and defenses would not protect it from the consequences of its pride and violence against Israel.

Oba 1:5-6 If thieves came to you, if robbers by night—…
Ezk 35:3 This is what the Lord GOD says: Behold, I am against you,…
Mal 1:3-4 but Esau I have hated, and I have made his…

I will uncover his hiding places,

Edom’s remote settlements and fortified places would be exposed. No refuge, alliance, or hidden resource could shield the nation from God’s judgment.

Oba 1:3-4 The pride of your heart has deceived you,…
Amo 9:2-3 Though they dig down to Sheol, from there My hand will take them…
Job 34:22 There is no darkness or deep shadow where…

and he will be unable to conceal himself.

Edom could not escape the judgment decreed against it. The Lord would bring its guilt and its defenses into the open.

Jer 23:24 Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?…
Psa 139:7-12 Where can I go to escape Your Spirit?…
Heb 4:13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight;…

His descendants will be destroyed along with his relatives and neighbors,

The devastation would reach throughout Edom’s families, allied peoples, and surrounding communities. Those bound to Edom’s rebellion and hostility would share in its downfall.

Oba 1:18 Then the house of Jacob will be a blazing fire…
Oba 1:9 Then your mighty men, O Teman, will be terrified…
Oba 1:7 All the men allied with you will drive you to the border;…

and he will be no more.

Edom would cease to exist as an independent nation. Its later disappearance from history confirmed the completeness of the judgment announced against Esau’s descendants.

Oba 1:16 For as you drank on My holy mountain, so all the nations…
Psa 37:10 Yet a little while, and the wicked will be no more;…
Ezk 35:9 I will make you a perpetual desolation.…

Abandon your orphans;

Ammon’s coming defeat would shatter households and leave children without their fathers and protectors. The judgment would expose the helplessness of a nation that had trusted in its cities, wealth, and strength.

Psa 27:10 Though my father and mother forsake me,…
Psa 10:14 But You have regarded trouble and grief;…
Hos 14:3 Assyria will not save us, nor will we ride on horses.…

I will preserve their lives.

God’s judgment on Ammon would not cancel His concern for the defenseless. He declares that the fatherless would remain under His care even when their nation’s security had collapsed.

Psa 41:2 The LORD will protect and preserve him; He will bless him…
Psa 121:7-8 The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve…
Psa 33:19 to deliver them from death and keep them alive in famine.

Let your widows trust in Me.”

Widows facing the loss of family support were invited to depend on the Lord rather than the ruined power of Ammon. God presents Himself as the reliable protector of those left vulnerable by the judgment.

1Ti 5:5 The widow who is truly in need and left all alone…
Psa 68:5 A father of the fatherless and a defender of widows…
Rut 2:12 May the LORD repay your work, and may you receive…

For this is what the LORD says:

God Himself announces the judgment, leaving no doubt that the warning carries His authority and will be fulfilled.

Jer 25:15 This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me:…
Ezk 23:31 Because you have followed the path of your sister,…

“If those who do not deserve to drink the cup must drink it,

Judah, though under God’s covenant, had already faced His discipline for persistent sin. Their suffering showed that divine judgment had begun with those nearest to Him.

Isa 51:17 Awake, awake! Rise up, O Jerusalem, you who have drunk…
Lam 4:21 So rejoice and be glad, O Daughter of Edom,…
Psa 75:8 For a cup is in the hand of the LORD, full of foaming wine…

can you possibly remain unpunished?

Edom had acted violently and maliciously toward Judah, especially in times of Jerusalem’s downfall. If Judah did not escape correction, Edom could not expect immunity.

Pro 11:21 Be assured that the wicked will not go unpunished…
Nam 1:3 The LORD is slow to anger and great in power;…

You will not go unpunished,

Edom’s defenses, wealth, and mountain strongholds would not protect it from the judgment God had decreed.

Jer 30:11 For I am with you to save you, declares the LORD.…
Exo 34:7 maintaining loving devotion to a thousand generations,…
Num 14:18 The LORD is slow to anger and abounding in loving devotion…

for you must drink it too.

The cup represents the full measure of God’s wrath against Edom. Its downfall would demonstrate that every nation stands accountable before the Lord.

Jer 25:28-29 If they refuse to take the cup from your hand and drink it…
Oba 1:16 For as you drank on My holy mountain, so all the nations…
Rev 14:10 he too will drink the wine of God’s anger…

For by Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD,

God’s oath guarantees the certainty of Edom’s judgment. Swearing by Himself invokes His own unchanging authority and leaves no possibility that the decree will fail.

Gen 22:16 By Myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, …
Isa 45:23 By Myself I have sworn; truth has gone out from My mouth,…
Heb 6:13 When God made His promise to Abraham, since He had no one…

that Bozrah will become a desolation,

Bozrah, an important Edomite city, represented the strength and security of the nation. Its fall would expose the emptiness of Edom’s pride and power.

Amo 1:12 So I will send fire upon Teman to consume…
Isa 34:6 The sword of the LORD is bathed in blood.…
Ezk 35:7-8 I will make Mount Seir a desolate waste…

a disgrace, a ruin, and a curse,

Edom would lose its honor, suffer devastation, and stand under God’s judgment because of its violence, arrogance, and hostility toward Israel.

Deu 29:22-23 Then the generation to come—your sons who follow you…
Deu 28:37 You will become an object of horror, scorn, and ridicule…
Mal 1:4 Though Edom may say, “We have been devastated,”…

and all her cities will be in ruins forever.”

The judgment would extend beyond Bozrah to the whole land of Edom. Its cities would not recover their former place, marking the finality of God’s sentence against the nation.

Isa 34:10 It will not be quenched—day or night. Its smoke will ascend…
Ezk 35:9 I will make you a perpetual desolation.…
Zep 2:9 Therefore, as surely as I live,” declares the LORD of Hosts,…

I have heard a message from the LORD;

Jeremiah announces a revelation received from God, establishing the judgment as the Lord’s own decree rather than a human prediction.

Oba 1:1 This is what the Lord GOD says about Edom…
Isa 21:10 O my people, crushed on the threshing floor,…
Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan…

an envoy has been sent to the nations:

God summons the surrounding peoples to carry out His judgment, demonstrating His rule over every nation and kingdom.

Jer 51:27 Raise a banner in the land! Blow the ram’s horn…
Jol 3:9 Proclaim this among the nations: “Prepare for war;…
Jer 50:2 Announce and declare to the nations; lift up a banner…

“Assemble yourselves to march against her!

The nations are called to unite in an attack against Edom, whose pride, hostility toward Israel, and false security had brought divine judgment.

Jol 3:11 Come quickly, all you surrounding nations…
Jer 50:9 For behold, I stir up and bring against Babylon an assembly…
Isa 13:4 Listen, a tumult on the mountains, like that of…

Rise up for battle!”

The coming invasion would not be accidental or merely political; it would fulfill God’s purpose against Edom.

Jol 3:10 Beat your plowshares into swords and your pruning hooks…
Jer 46:3-4 “Deploy your shields, small and large; advance for battle!…
Jdg 7:9 That night the LORD said to Gideon, “Get up and go down…

“For behold,

God announces His settled judgment against Edom, calling attention to the certainty of what He is about to do.

Oba 1:1 This is what the Lord GOD says about Edom…
Isa 34:5-6 When My sword has drunk its fill in the heavens,…

I will make you small among nations,

Edom had gained strength through its fortified territory and trade routes, but its security would not withstand the Lord’s decree. Its influence, power, and standing among surrounding peoples would be brought low.

Oba 1:2 Behold, I will make you small among the nations;…
Ezk 29:15 Egypt will be the lowliest of kingdoms and will never again…
Psa 107:39 When they are decreased and humbled by oppression,…

despised among men.

Edom’s pride and hostility toward Israel would leave it dishonored and vulnerable. The nation that trusted in its position and strength would become an object of contempt among the nations.

Isa 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows…
Psa 22:6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men…
Lam 3:45 You have made us scum and refuse among the nations.

The terror you cause and the pride of your heart have deceived you,

Edom’s reputation for violence and its long hostility toward Israel fed its confidence. Descended from Esau, the Edomites trusted their military reputation and believed no neighboring power could overcome them.

Oba 1:3 The pride of your heart has deceived you,…
Isa 47:10 You were secure in your wickedness; you said…
Ezk 28:17 Your heart grew proud of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom…

O dwellers in the clefts of the rocks,

Edom occupied the rugged highlands southeast of the Dead Sea, including fortified settlements among steep cliffs and narrow passes. Their rocky homeland provided natural defenses and encouraged a false sense of safety.

Isa 2:21 They will flee to caverns in the rocks…
Exo 33:22 and when My glory passes by, I will put you in a cleft…
Sng 2:14 O my dove in the clefts of the rock, in the crevices…

O occupiers of the mountain summit.

From their elevated strongholds, the Edomites believed they could control approaches to their territory and resist invasion. Their security rested in terrain and human strength rather than in the Lord.

Isa 14:13 You said in your heart: “I will ascend to the heavens…”…
Ezk 28:14 You were anointed as a guardian cherub, for I had ordained…
Deu 32:13 He made him ride on the heights of the land…

Though you elevate your nest like the eagle,

Like an eagle nesting beyond reach on high cliffs, Edom sought to place itself above danger and above its enemies. Its pride led it to assume that its position could not be threatened.

Oba 1:4 Though you soar like the eagle and make your nest…
Job 39:27-28 Does the eagle soar at your command and make his nest…
Hab 2:9 Woe to him who builds his house by unjust gain,…

even from there I will bring you down,” declares the LORD.

No fortress or mountain refuge could shield Edom from God’s judgment. The Lord would humble the nation, and Edom was eventually conquered, displaced, and absorbed by surrounding peoples.

Amo 9:2-3 Though they dig down to Sheol, from there My hand will take them…
Isa 14:15 But you will be brought down to Sheol,…
Job 40:11-12 Unleash the fury of your wrath; look on every proud man…

“Edom will become an object of horror.

Isa 34:9-10 Edom’s streams will be turned to tar, and her soil to sulfur…

All who pass by will be appalled

Travelers would see the ruins of a once-secure people and recognize the severity of its downfall. Edom’s desolation would stand as public evidence of divine judgment.

2Ch 7:21 And when this temple has become a heap of rubble,…
Lam 2:15 All who pass by clap their hands at you in scorn.…

and will scoff at all her wounds.

The nation’s wounds portray a ruin so complete that onlookers would mock its former strength. Edom’s defenses, wealth, and pride could not prevent the judgment God had decreed.

Oba 1:12-14 But you should not gloat in that day, your brother’s day…
Psa 137:7 Remember, O LORD, the sons of Edom on the day…

As Sodom and Gomorrah were overthrown along with their neighbors,”

Edom’s coming ruin would resemble the catastrophic judgment that fell on the cities of the plain. Like that destruction, it would be comprehensive, extending beyond a single city to the surrounding territory.

Jer 50:40 As God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, along with…
Deu 29:23 All its soil will be a burning waste of sulfur and salt,…
Gen 19:24-25 Then the LORD rained down sulfur and fire…

Jer 50:13 Because of the wrath of the LORD, she will not be inhabited;…
Jer 9:11 And I will make Jerusalem a heap of rubble…

Its devastation would not be temporary; no lasting community would remain.

Jer 51:43 Her cities have become a desolation, a dry and arid land…
Isa 34:10 It will not be quenched—day or night. Its smoke will ascend…
Ezk 35:9 I will make you a perpetual desolation.…

Behold, one will come up like a lion from the thickets of the Jordan to the watered pasture.

A lion leaving the dense Jordan thickets to seize open pasture pictures a fierce invader overrunning a secure and prosperous land. Edom’s natural defenses and rugged terrain would not protect it from the power God was bringing against it.

Jer 12:5 If you have raced with men on foot, how can you compete…
Jer 4:7 A lion has gone up from his thicket, and a destroyer…
Mic 5:8 Then the remnant of Jacob will be among the nations,…

For in an instant I will chase Edom from her land.

God’s judgment would be sudden and decisive. Edom, descended from Esau and long hostile toward Israel, would be driven from its inheritance by the conqueror appointed for this purpose.

Judgment on Damascus

Concerning Damascus:

Damascus was a leading Syrian city and an important center of trade, government, and military strength. Its prominence made its coming judgment a sign that the Lord ruled over the nations surrounding Israel.

Judgment on Elam

This is the word of the LORD

The message carries God’s authority and reveals His purpose for a nation beyond Judah.

Ezk 1:3 The word of the LORD came directly to Ezekiel the priest…
Hos 1:1 This is the word of the LORD that came to Hosea son of Beeri…
Jon 1:1 Now the word of the LORD came to Jonah son of Amittai…

that came to Jeremiah the prophet

Jeremiah served as God’s messenger during Judah’s final years before the Babylonian exile, announcing both judgment and future restoration despite persistent opposition.

Jer 25:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah concerning…
Jer 30:1 This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
Jer 36:1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah king of Judah,…

concerning Elam

Elam occupied territory east of Babylon in present-day southwestern Iran. Though distant from Jerusalem, it stood under the Lord’s rule and was accountable to Him for its actions.

This is what the LORD of Hosts says:

The God who commands the armies of heaven announces His judgment with absolute authority over nations and their strength.

Zec 1:3 So tell the people that this is what the LORD of Hosts says:…
Zec 1:14 Then the angel who was speaking with me said,…
1Sa 15:2 This is what the LORD of Hosts says: ‘I witnessed…

“Behold, I will shatter Elam’s bow,

Elam, east of Babylon in present-day southwestern Iran, was renowned for its archers. God declared that He would break the weapon on which the nation depended, bringing its military power to ruin.

Psa 46:9 He makes wars to cease throughout the earth;…
Hos 1:5 And on that day I will break the bow of Israel…
Ezk 39:3 Then I will strike the bow from your left hand…

the mainstay of their might.

Elam’s principal source of security and influence would fail. The judgment would reach the foundation of its national strength, showing that no army can stand when God acts against it.

1Sa 2:4 The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble…
Psa 37:15 But their swords will pierce their own hearts,…
Isa 14:5 The LORD has broken the staff of the wicked,…

I will bring the four winds against Elam

God declares that He will unleash judgment from every direction against Elam, a powerful kingdom east of Babylon in present-day southwestern Iran. Its military strength and location could not protect it from the Lord’s decree.

Zec 2:6 “Get up! Get up! Flee from the land of the north,”…
Dan 7:2 “In my vision in the night I looked, and suddenly”…
Ezk 37:9 Then He said to me, “Prophesy to the breath;…

from the four corners of the heavens,

The coming disaster would be complete and unavoidable. No region of Elam would remain beyond the reach of the invasion and upheaval God ordained.

Mat 24:31 And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call…
Rev 7:1 After this I saw four angels standing…
Isa 11:12 He will raise a banner for the nations and gather…

and I will scatter them to all these winds.

Elam’s defeat would lead to the dispersal of its people through war, flight, and exile. The nation’s power, security, and unity would be broken.

Ezk 5:10 As a result, fathers among you will eat their sons…
Ezk 12:14 And I will scatter to every wind all the attendants…
Ezk 17:21 All his choice troops will fall by the sword,…

There will not be a nation to which Elam’s exiles will not go.

The scattering would be so extensive that Elamites would be driven among many peoples and lands. Their judgment showed that God rules over every nation and brings down even established kingdoms according to His purpose.

Ezk 12:15 And they will know that I am the LORD, when I disperse them…
Lev 26:33 But I will scatter you among the nations…
Deu 28:64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,…

So I will shatter Elam before their foes,

Elam, centered in southwestern Iran, had long been a formidable regional power and frequently clashed with Mesopotamian kingdoms. God declared that its strength, security, and military power would be broken before its enemies.

Deu 28:25 The LORD will cause you to be defeated before your enemies.…
Lev 26:17 Those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee…
Deu 32:30 How could one man pursue a thousand, or two…

before those who seek their lives.

Elam’s adversaries, including the great powers surrounding it, would prevail in their campaigns. The nation would be unable to escape those determined to conquer it.

Psa 54:3 For strangers rise up against me, and ruthless men…
Psa 63:9 But those who seek my life to destroy it…
1Sa 24:11 See, my father, look at the corner of your robe…

I will bring disaster upon them,

The coming calamity was not accidental or merely political. God Himself ordained it as judgment against Elam and directed the course of events among the nations.

Isa 45:7 I form the light and create the darkness;…
Amo 3:6 If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble?…
Lam 3:38 Do not both adversity and good come from the mouth…

even My fierce anger,” declares the LORD.

Elam’s judgment revealed the seriousness of God’s wrath against rebellion and violence. The LORD ruled over Elam as surely as He ruled over Israel.

Psa 78:49 He unleashed His fury against them, wrath, indignation…
Isa 13:9 Behold, the Day of the LORD is coming—cruel…
Deu 29:27-28 Therefore the anger of the LORD burned against this land…

“I will send out the sword after them

War would pursue the Elamites even as they fled or sought safety. Defeat, violence, and national upheaval would continue under God’s hand.

Lev 26:33 But I will scatter you among the nations…
Ezk 5:12 A third of your people will die by plague…
Jer 9:16 I will scatter them among the nations…

until I finish them off.

The judgment would be thorough, bringing Elam’s former power to an end and leaving the nation fully subdued.

Nam 1:8 But with an overwhelming flood He will make an end…
Isa 10:23 For the Lord GOD of Hosts will carry out the destruction…
Zep 1:18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able…

I will set My throne in Elam,

God claims supreme authority over Elam, the ancient kingdom east of Babylon in present-day southwestern Iran. His throne represents His rule and judicial power over a nation known for its strength and influence.

Jer 25:25 all the kings of Zimri, Elam, and Media;
Psa 9:7-8 But the LORD abides forever; He has established His throne…
Dan 4:34-35 But at the end of those days I, Nebuchadnezzar,…

and destroy its king and officials,”

Elam’s judgment would reach its rulers and governing class, bringing down the structures that sustained its power. No human kingdom, however established, stands beyond God’s authority.

Zep 1:8-9 On the Day of the LORD’s sacrifice I will punish the princes…
Ezk 7:27 The king will mourn, the prince will be clothed with despair,…
Isa 24:21-22 In that day the LORD will punish the host of heaven…

declares the LORD.

The judgment comes by God’s own decree and will be carried out according to His purpose.

Num 14:28 So tell them: As surely as I live, declares the LORD,…
Ezk 24:14 I, the LORD, have spoken; the time is coming…
Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me…

“Yet in the last days,

God points beyond Elam’s judgment to a future time of restoration under His sovereign purpose.

Hos 3:5 Afterward, the people of Israel will return…
Isa 2:2 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD…
Mic 4:1 In the last days the mountain of the house of the LORD…

I will restore Elam from captivity,”

Elam, east of Babylon in present-day Iran, had been a strong regional power and was later conquered and dispersed. Though judged for its pride and military strength, Elam would not remain forgotten. God’s promise shows that His rule extends over every nation and that judgment does not cancel His purposes of mercy.

Jer 29:14 I will be found by you, declares the LORD, …
Deu 30:3 He will restore you from captivity and have compassion…
Ezk 39:25 Therefore this is what the Lord GOD says:…

declares the LORD.

The restoration of Elam rests on God’s own authority and faithfulness. What He has spoken will be fulfilled.

Ezk 12:25 I, the LORD, will speak whatever word I speak…
Num 23:19 God is not a man, that He should lie, or a son of man,…
Isa 55:11 So My word that proceeds from My mouth will not return to Me…
