The Tradition of the Elders

Then some Pharisees and scribes

These influential religious leaders upheld both the written Law and the traditions developed around it. Their joint appearance reflects growing opposition from the Jewish religious establishment to Jesus’ ministry.

Mrk 7:1 Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come…

They deliberately sought Him out, not as sincere learners but to challenge His authority and accuse Him before the people.

from Jerusalem

As the center of the Temple, the Sanhedrin, and national religious leadership, Jerusalem gave their visit an official character. Reports of Jesus’ teaching and works had reached the highest levels of authority.

Jhn 1:19 And this was John’s testimony when the Jews of Jerusalem…
Mrk 3:22 And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem…

and asked,

Their question was designed to expose what they considered a violation of tradition and to weaken Jesus’ influence among the crowds.

Mat 22:34-35 And when the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced…
Mat 12:38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him…
Mrk 8:11 Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus…

“Why do Your disciples break the tradition of the elders?

Pharisees and scribes from Jerusalem confronted Jesus over practices handed down by earlier teachers. These oral traditions sought to regulate daily life beyond the written requirements of Moses and were treated by many religious leaders as binding. Their objection revealed concern for ceremonial observance while overlooking whether such traditions upheld God’s commands.

Mrk 7:5 So the Pharisees and scribes questioned Jesus:…
Mrk 7:8-9 You have disregarded the commandment of God…
Col 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive…

They do not wash their hands before they eat.”

The washing in view was a ritual act of purification, not ordinary cleanliness. Jesus used the dispute to expose the danger of elevating human rules above God’s word and to show that uncleanness before God arises from the heart rather than from food or unwashed hands.

Mrk 7:3-4 Now in holding to the tradition of the elders,…
Luk 11:38 But the Pharisee was surprised to see Jesus…
Heb 9:10 They consist only in food and drink and special washings……

Jesus replied,

Jesus answered the Pharisees and scribes directly, exposing the inconsistency in their criticism. Their concern over ceremonial handwashing overlooked more serious violations of God’s will.

Mrk 7:6 Jesus answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly…”…
Mat 21:24 “I will also ask you one question,” Jesus replied,…
Mat 22:29 Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know…

“And why do you break the command of God

Rather than defending His disciples, Jesus brought the issue back to God’s authority. The Law given through Moses was not to be set aside by religious rulings or customs.

Mrk 7:9 He went on to say, “You neatly set aside the command of God…
Deu 12:32 See that you do everything I command you;…
Pro 30:6 Do not add to His words, lest He rebuke you…

for the sake of your tradition?

Oral traditions and interpretations had developed around the Mosaic Law to regulate daily life, but some had come to contradict the clear commands of Scripture. Jesus condemned any practice that allowed human tradition to override obedience to God.

Mrk 7:13 Thus you nullify the word of God by the tradition…
Col 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive…
Gal 1:14 I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries…

For God said,

God’s authority stands above human tradition. His commands reveal His will for the covenant people and establish the moral order governing family and community.

Exo 20:1 And God spoke all these words:
Deu 5:22 The LORD spoke these commandments in a loud voice…

‘Honor your father and mother’

Children were to show respect, obedience, and proper care to their parents. Faithfulness within the home reflected submission to God and helped preserve the stability of Israelite society.

Exo 20:12 Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long…
Deu 5:16 Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God…
Eph 6:2 “Honor your father and mother” (which is the first commandment…)…

and ‘Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.’

Open contempt for parents was treated as a serious rebellion against God’s appointed order. Under Israel’s law, the penalty showed that dishonoring parental authority threatened both the family and the wider community.

Exo 21:17 Anyone who curses his father or mother…
Lev 20:9 If anyone curses his father or mother, he must be put to…
Mrk 7:10 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’……

But you say

Jesus contrasted the religious leaders’ teaching with God’s command. Their traditions had been given authority in ways that could set aside the clear requirements of the Law.

Mrk 7:9 He went on to say, “You neatly set aside the command of God…
Isa 29:13 Therefore the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me…
Col 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive…

that if anyone says to his father or mother,

Honoring father and mother included caring for them materially, especially when age or need left them dependent on their children.

Exo 20:12 Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long…
Deu 5:16 Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God…
Eph 6:2-3 “Honor your father and mother” (which is the first commandment…)…

‘Whatever you would have received from me

A son or daughter could withhold resources that would otherwise have provided food, shelter, or financial support for parents.

Pro 28:24 He who robs his father or mother, saying, “It is not wrong,”…
1Ti 5:4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren,…
1Ti 5:8 If anyone does not provide for his own,…

is a gift devoted to God,’

By declaring possessions as Corban, meaning devoted to God, some used a religious vow to avoid supporting their parents. Jesus exposed this practice as a misuse of devotion that nullified God’s command to honor father and mother.

Mrk 7:11 But you say that if a man says to his father or mother…
Lev 27:28-29 Nothing that a man sets apart to the LORD from all he owns…
Num 30:2-3 If a man makes a vow to the LORD or swears an oath…

he need not honor his father or mother with it.

Under the Corban tradition, a person could declare possessions devoted to God and then claim exemption from using them to support aging parents. Though presented as religious devotion, this practice could leave parents without the care required by God’s command to honor father and mother. The Pharisees permitted a human tradition to excuse disobedience to God’s law.

Mrk 7:10-12 For Moses said, ‘Honor your father and your mother’……
Exo 20:12 Honor your father and mother, so that your days may be long…
Deu 5:16 Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God…

Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

Jesus exposes the seriousness of placing inherited rules above God’s commands. Their tradition did not merely add to the law; it set aside a clear requirement of Scripture and protected those who neglected their parents.

Mrk 7:13 Thus you nullify the word of God by the tradition…
Isa 29:13 Therefore the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me…
Col 2:8 See to it that no one takes you captive…

You hypocrites!

Jesus openly condemned the Pharisees and scribes for presenting themselves as devoted to God while their hearts remained far from Him. Their careful observance of traditions could not hide their neglect of God’s true commands.

Mat 23:13 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, you hypocrites!…
Mat 23:28 In the same way, on the outside you appear to be righteous,…

Isaiah prophesied correctly about you:

Their conduct reflected the condition Isaiah described in Israel generations earlier: outward worship without genuine devotion. Jesus identified them as continuing that pattern, honoring God publicly while resisting His authority inwardly.

Isa 29:13 Therefore the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me…
Mrk 7:6 Jesus answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly…”…

‘These people honor Me with their lips,

Jesus exposes the religious leaders’ outward profession of devotion to God. Their prayers, teaching, and public observances appeared faithful, yet they had allowed human traditions to obscure God’s commands.

Isa 29:13 Therefore the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me…
Mrk 7:6-7 Jesus answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly…”…
Psa 78:36-37 But they deceived Him with their mouths,…

but their hearts are far from Me.

Their worship lacked true submission to God. Though they maintained religious appearances, their desires and loyalties were not directed toward Him. Jesus calls attention to the necessity of inward faith that is reflected in obedience.

Jer 12:2 You planted them, and they have taken root.…
Ezk 33:31 So My people come to you as usual, sit before you,…
Act 8:21 You have no part or share in our ministry,…

They worship Me in vain;

Worship becomes empty when outward acts are separated from faith, obedience, and reverence for God. Jesus applies Isaiah’s rebuke to the Pharisees and scribes, whose religious practices concealed hearts that resisted God’s authority.

Mrk 7:7 They worship Me in vain; they teach as doctrine…
Isa 1:11-15 “What good to Me is your multitude of sacrifices?”…
Amo 5:21-24 “I hate, I despise your feasts! I cannot stand the stench”…

they teach as doctrine

Their error was not merely holding traditions, but treating human rulings as binding divine truth. By elevating inherited customs above God’s commands, they misled the people and distorted the purpose of the Law.

Tit 1:14 will pay no attention to Jewish myths or to the commands…
2Ti 4:3-4 For the time will come when men will not tolerate…

the precepts of men.’”

These man-made rules often emphasized ceremonial detail while neglecting God’s moral requirements. Jesus exposes the danger of religion shaped by human authority rather than submission to God’s revealed Word.

Isa 29:13 Therefore the Lord said: “These people draw near to Me…
Mrk 7:8-9 You have disregarded the commandment of God…

What Defiles a Man

Jesus called the crowd to Him

Jesus turned from His dispute with the Pharisees and scribes to address the wider gathering. He wanted the people to hear directly what God requires, rather than relying on traditions that could obscure His commands. His public teaching showed that the issue concerned every listener, not merely the religious leaders.

Mrk 7:14 Once again Jesus called the crowd to Him and said,…
Mrk 8:34 Then Jesus called the crowd to Him along with His disciples,…

and said,

He spoke with authority as He prepared to correct a common misunderstanding about ceremonial defilement.

Mrk 4:2 And He taught them many things in parables,…
Luk 12:54 Then Jesus said to the crowds, “As soon as you see a cloud…

“Listen and understand.

The crowd needed careful attention because Jesus was about to teach that uncleanness before God is not caused by food entering the body but by sinful desires and words proceeding from the heart.

Mat 13:13 This is why I speak to them in parables: ‘Though seeing…
Pro 2:2 if you incline your ear to wisdom and direct your heart…
Mrk 4:9 Then Jesus said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

A man is not defiled by what enters his mouth,

Jesus addressed the Pharisees’ objection that His disciples ate without the ceremonial handwashing required by their tradition. He distinguished ceremonial customs from the deeper uncleanness that comes from sin. Food enters the body and does not determine a person’s standing before God; moral defilement begins in the heart.

Mrk 7:15 “Nothing that enters a man from the outside can defile him;…
Act 10:13-15 Then a voice said to him: “Get up, Peter, kill and eat!”…
Rom 14:14 I am convinced and fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus…

but by what comes out of it.”

Words and actions reveal what rules within a person. Evil speech, deceit, anger, and other sins proceed from the heart and bring true defilement. God’s concern is not merely outward religious observance but a heart changed to obey Him.

Mrk 7:20-23 He continued: “What comes out of a man, that…
Luk 6:45 The good man brings good things out of the good treasure…
Jas 3:6-10 The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness…

Then the disciples came to Him and said,

After Jesus addressed the crowds, the disciples approached Him privately. They recognized that His teaching had stirred controversy and sought His response.

Mat 13:36 Then Jesus dismissed the crowds and went into the house.…
Mat 17:19 Afterward the disciples came to Jesus privately and asked,…
Mrk 7:17 After Jesus had left the crowd and gone into the house,…

“Are You aware that the Pharisees were offended

The Pharisees, respected for their devotion to religious traditions, objected because Jesus exposed the insufficiency of outward ritual without a clean heart. Their concern for ceremonial purity had overshadowed God’s command.

Luk 16:14 The Pharisees, who were lovers of money,…
Mat 13:57 And they took offense at Him. But Jesus said to them,…
Jhn 6:61 Aware that His disciples were grumbling about this teaching,…

when they heard this?”

Jesus’ words challenged their authority and revealed the deeper source of defilement: sin within the heart. The disciples’ report marked the growing opposition of Israel’s religious leaders to His ministry.

Mat 21:45-46 When the chief priests and Pharisees heard His parables,…
Jhn 7:32 When the Pharisees heard the crowd whispering…
Luk 20:19 When the scribes and chief priests realized…

But Jesus replied,

Jesus answered after being told that the Pharisees were offended by His teaching on defilement. He refused to soften the truth in order to preserve traditions that had displaced God’s commands.

Mat 22:29 Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know…
Mrk 12:24 Jesus said to them, “Aren’t you mistaken,…
Luk 20:34-38 Jesus answered, “The sons of this age marry…

“Every plant that My heavenly Father has not planted

He identified the Pharisees’ corrupt religious teaching and leadership as something not established by God. Though it appeared firmly rooted in Israel’s religious life, it lacked divine authority and would not endure.

Mat 13:24-30 Jesus put before them another parable: “The kingdom…
Isa 61:3 to console the mourners in Zion—to give them a crown…
Psa 92:13-14 Planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish…

will be pulled up by its roots.

God’s judgment would bring a complete end to what He had not planted, exposing and removing false religion rather than allowing it to remain among His people.

Ezk 17:9 So you are to tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says:…
Jud 1:12 These men are hidden reefs in your love feasts,…
Mat 3:10 The axe lies ready at the root of the trees,…

Disregard them!

The Pharisees had rejected Jesus’ teaching because it exposed traditions that had displaced God’s commands. Their offense did not make them reliable teachers. Jesus warned His disciples not to be governed by religious leaders who opposed God’s truth.

Rom 16:17 Now I urge you, brothers, to watch out for those who…
Tit 3:10 Reject a divisive man after a first and second admonition,
2Ti 3:5 having a form of godliness but denying its power.…

They are blind guides.

Though entrusted with teaching the Law, the Pharisees failed to recognize the Messiah and misrepresented God’s purposes. Their outward religion concealed a lack of spiritual understanding, making them unfit to lead others.

Mat 23:16 Woe to you, blind guides! You say, ‘If anyone swears…
Mat 23:24 You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel.
Isa 56:10 Israel’s watchmen are blind, they are all oblivious;…

If a blind man leads a blind man,

Those who follow leaders without truth and discernment share in the danger of their error. The image reflects the helplessness of travelers who depend on a guide unable to see the way.

Luk 6:39 Jesus also told them a parable: “Can a blind man…
Rom 2:19 if you are convinced that you are a guide for the blind,…
Isa 42:16 I will lead the blind by a way they did not know;…

both will fall into a pit.”

The leaders and those who accept their false direction face ruin together. Jesus’ warning exposes the serious consequences of rejecting God’s revelation while claiming to guide others.

Psa 57:6 They spread a net for my feet; my soul was despondent.…
Psa 7:15 He has dug a hole and hollowed it out;…
Pro 26:27 He who digs a pit will fall into it and he who rolls a stone…

Peter said to Him,

Peter often spoke for the disciples and showed both sincere devotion and a readiness to voice questions others may have shared. Though he had witnessed Jesus’ authority and received much instruction, he was still growing in understanding.

Mat 17:4 Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here…
Mrk 9:5 Rabbi, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up…
Luk 9:33 As Moses and Elijah were leaving, Peter said to Jesus,…

“Explain this parable to us.”

The disciples did not yet grasp Jesus’ teaching that defilement comes from within a person rather than from ceremonial food practices. Peter’s request reflects their dependence on Jesus to explain the spiritual meaning behind His words.

Mat 13:36 Then Jesus dismissed the crowds and went into the house.…
Luk 8:9 Then His disciples asked Him what this parable meant.
Mrk 4:10 As soon as Jesus was alone with the Twelve…

“Do you still not understand?” Jesus asked.

Jesus had just explained that defilement comes not from food or neglected ceremonial washing, but from the sinful intentions of the heart. The disciples still struggled to grasp the difference between outward ritual and inward purity. His question exposed their need for clearer spiritual understanding while showing His patient instruction of those He had chosen to prepare for ministry.

Mrk 8:17-21 Aware of their conversation, Jesus asked them,…
Mrk 6:52 for they had not understood about the loaves,…
Jhn 8:43 Why do you not understand what I am saying?…

“Do you not yet realize

Jesus rebukes the disciples for their continued failure to grasp His teaching. He patiently exposes the difference between ceremonial concerns and the deeper issue of moral defilement.

Mrk 8:17-21 Aware of their conversation, Jesus asked them,…
Mat 16:9-11 Do you still not understand? Do you not remember…
Luk 24:25 Then Jesus said to them, “O foolish ones,…

that whatever enters the mouth

Food was subject to detailed dietary regulations under the Law, but it could not corrupt a person’s heart or make him morally unclean before God.

Mrk 7:18-19 “Are you still so dull?” He asked. “Do you not understand?…
Act 10:13-15 Then a voice said to him: “Get up, Peter, kill and eat!”…
Rom 14:14 I am convinced and fully persuaded in the Lord Jesus…

goes into the stomach

Jesus points to the ordinary process of eating: food affects the body physically, not the inner person spiritually.

1Co 6:13 “Food for the stomach and the stomach for food, ”…
1Ti 5:23 Stop drinking only water and use a little wine instead…

and then is eliminated?

What is eaten passes through the body and has no lasting power to defile. True uncleanness comes from the heart and is revealed in sinful words, motives, and actions.

Job 20:15 He swallows wealth but vomits it out;…
Pro 23:8 You will vomit up what little you have eaten…
Deu 23:12-14 You must have a place outside the camp to go…

But the things that come out of the mouth

But the things that come out of the mouth reveal what is in a person’s heart. Jesus teaches that words expose inner moral condition, making outward religious observance insufficient apart from inward righteousness.

Mat 12:34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil…
Luk 6:45 The good man brings good things out of the good treasure…
Jas 3:10 Out of the same mouth come blessing and cursing.…

come from the heart,

Sinful thoughts, desires, and actions come from the heart, revealing that external rituals cannot cleanse the sinful human nature within.

Mrk 7:21-23 For from within the hearts of men come evil thoughts…
Jer 17:9 The heart is deceitful above all things and beyond cure.…
Pro 4:23 Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow…

and these things defile a man.

Defilement is therefore moral and spiritual rather than merely ceremonial. Evil words and actions proceeding from a corrupt heart make a person unclean before God. Jesus’ teaching points to the need for inward cleansing and the transformed heart God provides through His saving work.

Mrk 7:15 “Nothing that enters a man from the outside can defile him;…
Mrk 7:20 He continued: “What comes out of a man, that…
Jas 3:6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of wickedness…

For out of the heart come evil thoughts,

In Scripture, the heart is the inner seat of thought, desire, and moral choice. Human sin arises from within, exposing the fallen condition that cannot be corrected by outward rituals alone.

Psa 101:5 Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret,…
Jas 4:11 Brothers, do not slander one another…
Tit 3:2 malign no one, and to be peaceable and gentle…

These are what defile a man,

Evil actions arise from the fallen human heart and reveal genuine moral uncleanness before God. Murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, and slander corrupt the person who commits them, regardless of outward religious observance.

The handwashing demanded by the Pharisees followed traditions developed by religious leaders rather than a command given to all Israel in the Law of Moses. Ceremonial washing could not cleanse the heart or make a person righteous before God. Jesus exposed the error of treating human tradition as a measure of spiritual purity while neglecting the sins that proceed from within.

Mat 9:18 While Jesus was saying these things, a synagogue leader came…
Mat 17:14 When they came to the crowd, a man came up to Jesus…

“Lord, help me!” she said.

Her brief plea revealed persistent faith amid apparent rejection. She did not argue her worthiness or demand a response, but appealed directly to Jesus for mercy.

But Jesus replied,

Jesus answered the Canaanite woman who had pleaded for her daughter’s healing. His response drew attention to the order of His earthly ministry and tested the persistence of her faith.

Jhn 4:21-24 “Believe Me, woman,” Jesus replied, “a time is coming……

“It is not right

God’s covenant promises had been entrusted to Israel, and Jesus had come first to call the lost sheep of that people. The priority given to Israel did not exclude Gentiles from God’s mercy.

Act 13:46 Then Paul and Barnabas answered them boldly…
Rom 1:16 I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power…

The children represent Israel, and the bread represents the blessings of the Messiah’s ministry. Jesus’ works and teaching confirmed that God’s promised salvation had arrived.

and toss it to the dogs.”

The image reflects the distinction commonly recognized between Jews and Gentiles. Yet the woman did not reject Jesus’ order; she appealed humbly for mercy, trusting that even those outside Israel could receive help from Him.

Psa 23:5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.…

“O woman,” Jesus answered,

Jesus addresses the Canaanite mother with dignity and compassion. Her identification as a Canaanite recalls Israel’s historic enemies and highlights that she stood outside the covenant people.

Jhn 2:4 “Woman, what is that to you and to Me?” Jesus replied.…
Jhn 4:21 “Believe Me, woman,” Jesus replied, “a time is coming……
Luk 13:12 When Jesus saw her, He called her over and said,…

“your faith is great!

Her faith is shown in persistent trust in Jesus despite His initial silence and the disciples’ dismissal. She recognizes His authority and depends on His mercy.

Luk 7:9 When Jesus heard this, He marveled at the centurion…
Mat 9:22 Jesus turned and saw her. “Take courage, daughter,”…

Jesus grants her request, revealing that His mercy reaches beyond Israel to those who come to Him in humble faith.

Mrk 7:29 Then Jesus told her, “Because of this answer, you may go.”…
Psa 20:4 May He give you the desires of your heart…

And her daughter was healed from that very hour.

The immediate healing demonstrates Jesus’ complete authority over demonic oppression and confirms the effectiveness of the mother’s faith.

Mat 8:13 Then Jesus said to the centurion, “Go! As you have believed,…

The Feeding of the Four Thousand

Moving on from there,

Jesus left the region of Tyre and Sidon after healing the Canaanite woman’s daughter and continued His ministry among the towns surrounding Galilee.

Jesus went along the Sea of Galilee.

Psa 107:5-9 They were hungry and thirsty; their soul fainted…

The disciples replied,

Though they had witnessed Jesus provide for the five thousand, the disciples again focused on the practical difficulty before them. Their response shows how slowly they grasped the extent of His power and care.

Jesus directs the large gathering with authority and care, bringing order before providing for their needs. As Israel depended on God’s provision in the wilderness, the crowd now depends on the Messiah in a desolate place.

A total of four thousand men were fed,

Jesus provided abundantly for a large crowd in the Decapolis, demonstrating His care for those who had remained with Him in a largely Gentile region. As with the feeding of the five thousand, the miracle revealed His authority to supply what His people could not provide for themselves.
