Isaiah 22

The Valley of Vision

1  מַשָּׂ֖א (The burden) גֵּ֣יא (of the Valley) חִזָּי֑וֹן (of Vision):

מַה־ (What) לָּ֣ךְ (with you), אֵפ֔וֹא (then)

כִּֽי־ (that) עָלִ֥ית (you have gone up), כֻּלָּ֖ךְ (all of you), לַגַּגּֽוֹת׃ (to the rooftops)?

2  תְּשֻׁא֣וֹת׀ (Of noise) מְלֵאָ֗ה (full),

עִ֚יר (O city), הֽוֹמִיָּ֔ה (murmuring) קִרְיָ֖ה (O town) עַלִּיזָ֑ה (jubilant),

חֲלָלַ֙יִךְ֙ (Your slain) לֹ֣א (are not) חַלְלֵי־ (those slain by) חֶ֔רֶב (the sword),

וְלֹ֖א (and not) מֵתֵ֥י (were they killed) מִלְחָמָֽה׃ (in battle).

3  כָּל־ (All) קְצִינַ֥יִךְ (your rulers) נָֽדְדוּ־ (have fled) יַ֖חַד (together),

מִקֶּ֣שֶׁת (without a bow) אֻסָּ֑רוּ (they are bound),

כָּל־ (all) נִמְצָאַ֙יִךְ֙ (those being found in you) אֻסְּר֣וּ (are bound) יַחְדָּ֔ו (together),

מֵרָח֖וֹק (far away) בָּרָֽחוּ׃ (they have fled).

4  עַל־ (Upon) כֵּ֥ן (thus) אָמַ֛רְתִּי (I said),

שְׁע֥וּ (Look away) מִנִּ֖י (from me), אֲמָרֵ֣ר (let me be bitter)

בַּבֶּ֑כִי (in my weeping); אַל־ (do not) תָּאִ֣יצוּ (hurry) לְנַֽחֲמֵ֔נִי (to comfort me)

עַל־ (over) שֹׁ֖ד (the destruction) בַּת־ (of the daughter) עַמִּֽי׃ (of my people).

5  כִּ֣י (For) יוֹם֩ (it is a day) מְהוּמָ֨ה (of tumult) וּמְבוּסָ֜ה (and trampling) וּמְבוּכָ֗ה (and confusion)

לַֽאדֹנָ֧י (unto the Lord) יְהוִ֛ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts) בְּגֵ֣יא (in the Valley) חִזָּי֑וֹן (of Vision)—

מְקַרְקַ֥ר (digging down) קִ֖ר (a wall)

וְשׁ֥וֹעַ (and crying) אֶל־ (to) הָהָֽר׃ (the mountain).

6  וְעֵילָם֙ (And Elam) נָשָׂ֣א (bore) אַשְׁפָּ֔ה (the quiver) בְּרֶ֥כֶב (with chariots) אָדָ֖ם (of man)— פָּֽרָשִׁ֑ים (and horsemen)—

וְקִ֥יר (and Kir) עֵרָ֖ה (uncovered) מָגֵֽן׃ (the shield).

7  וַיְהִ֥י (And it will come to pass that) מִבְחַר־ (that the choicest) עֲמָקַ֖יִךְ (of your valleys) מָ֣לְאוּ (will be full of) רָ֑כֶב (of chariots),

וְהַפָּ֣רָשִׁ֔ים (and the horsemen) שֹׁ֖ת (being set) שָׁ֥תוּ (are set) הַשָּֽׁעְרָה׃ (at the gate).

8  וַיְגַ֕ל (And He uncovered) אֵ֖ת (-)

מָסַ֣ךְ (the screen) יְהוּדָ֑ה (of Judah).

וַתַּבֵּט֙ (And You looked) בַּיּ֣וֹם (the day) הַה֔וּא (on that) אֶל־ (to) נֶ֖שֶׁק (the weapons) בֵּ֥ית (of the House) הַיָּֽעַר׃ (of the Forest). 9  וְאֵ֨ת (And) בְּקִיעֵ֧י (the breaches) עִיר־ (of the city) דָּוִ֛ד (of David) רְאִיתֶ֖ם (you⁺ saw), כִּי־ (that) רָ֑בּוּ (they were many), וַֽתְּקַבְּצ֔וּ (and you⁺ gathered together) אֶת־ (-) מֵ֥י (the waters) הַבְּרֵכָ֖ה (of the pool) הַתַּחְתּוֹנָֽה׃ (lower). 10  וְאֶת־ (And) בָּתֵּ֥י (the houses) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (of Jerusalem) סְפַרְתֶּ֑ם (you⁺ numbered), וַתִּתְֿצוּ֙ (and you⁺ broke down) הַבָּ֣תִּ֔ים (the houses) לְבַצֵּ֖ר (to fortify) הַחוֹמָֽה׃ (the wall). 11  וּמִקְוָ֣ה׀ (And a reservoir) עֲשִׂיתֶ֗ם (you⁺ made) בֵּ֚ין (between) הַחֹ֣מֹתַ֔יִם (the two walls) לְמֵ֖י (for the water) הַבְּרֵכָ֣ה (of the pool) הַיְשָׁנָ֑ה (old), וְלֹ֤א (and not) הִבַּטְתֶּם֙ (did you⁺ look) אֶל־ (to) עֹשֶׂ֔יהָ (the one who made it), וְיֹצְרָ֥הּ (and Him who fashioned it) מֵֽרָח֖וֹק (long ago) לֹ֥א (not) רְאִיתֶֽם׃ (you⁺ did see).

12  וַיִּקְרָ֗א (And called) אֲדֹנָ֧י (the Lord) יְהוִ֛ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts) בַּיּ֣וֹם (day) הַה֑וּא (on that)

לִבְכִי֙ (for weeping), וּלְמִסְפֵּ֔ד (and for wailing),

וּלְקָרְחָ֖ה (and for baldness),

וְלַחֲגֹ֥ר (and for girding with) שָֽׂק׃ (sackcloth).

13  וְהִנֵּ֣ה׀ (And behold), שָׂשׂ֣וֹן (joy) וְשִׂמְחָ֗ה (and gladness),

הָרֹ֤ג׀ (slaying) בָּקָר֙ (of oxen) וְשָׁחֹ֣ט (and slaughtering) צֹ֔אן (of sheep),

אָכֹ֥ל (the eating) בָּשָׂ֖ר (of flesh) וְשָׁת֣וֹת (and drinking) יָ֑יִן (of wine):

אָכ֣וֹל (Let us eat) וְשָׁת֔וֹ (and drink), כִּ֥י (for) מָחָ֖ר (tomorrow) נָמֽוּת׃ (we die).

14  וְנִגְלָ֥ה (And it was revealed) בְאָזְנָ֖י (in my ears) יְהוָ֣ה (by YHWH of) צְבָא֑וֹת (Hosts):

אִם־ (Not) יְ֠כֻפַּר (will be atoned for) הֶעָוֺ֨ן (iniquity) הַזֶּ֤ה (this) לָכֶם֙ (from you⁺),

עַד־ (even until) תְּמֻת֔וּן (you⁺ die),

אָמַ֛ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֥י (the Lord) יְהוִ֖ה (YHWH of) צְבָאֽוֹת׃פ (Hosts).

A Message for Shebna

15  כֹּ֥ה (Thus) אָמַ֛ר (says) אֲדֹנָ֥י (the Lord) יְהוִ֖ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֑וֹת (Hosts): לֶךְ־ (Go), בֹּא֙ (come) אֶל־ (to) הַסֹּכֵ֣ן (the steward) הַזֶּ֔ה (this) עַל־ (to) שֶׁבְנָ֖א (Shebna) אֲשֶׁ֥ר (who is) עַל־ (over) הַבָּֽיִת׃ (the house): 16  מַה־ (What is) לְּךָ֥ (unto you) פֹה֙ (here)? וּמִ֣י (And who is) לְךָ֣ (unto you) פֹ֔ה (here), כִּֽי־ (that) חָצַ֧בְתָּ (have hewn out) לְּךָ֛ (for yourself) פֹּ֖ה (here) קָ֑בֶר (a tomb)— חֹצְבִ֤י (hewing out) מָרוֹם֙ (on high) קִבְר֔וֹ (his tomb), חֹקְקִ֥י (carving) בַסֶּ֖לַע (in the rock) מִשְׁכָּ֥ן (a resting place) לֽוֹ׃ (for himself)?

17  הִנֵּ֤ה (Behold), יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) מְטַלְטֶלְךָ֔ (is going to hurl you) טַלְטֵלָ֖ה (with a great hurling), גָּ֑בֶר (O strong one), וְעֹטְךָ֖ (and will grasp hold of you) עָטֹֽה׃ (with a firm grasp). 18  צָנ֤וֹף (With winding) יִצְנָפְךָ֙ (He will wind you up), צְנֵפָ֔ה (tossing you) כַּדּ֕וּר (like a ball), אֶל־ (into) אֶ֖רֶץ (a land) רַחֲבַ֣ת (broad) יָדָ֑יִם (of sides). שָׁ֣מָּה (There) תָמ֗וּת (you will die), וְשָׁ֙מָּה֙ (and there) מַרְכְּב֣וֹת (the chariots) כְּבוֹדֶ֔ךָ (of your glory) קְל֖וֹן (will be the shame) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) אֲדֹנֶֽיךָ׃ (of your master). 19  וַהֲדַפְתִּ֖יךָ (And I will thrust you) מִמַּצָּבֶ֑ךָ (from your station), וּמִמַּעֲמָֽדְךָ֖ (and from your position) יֶהֶרְסֶֽךָ׃ (one will throw you down).

20  וְהָיָ֖ה (And it will be) בַּיּ֣וֹם (day) הַה֑וּא (on that), וְקָרָ֣אתִי (and I will call) לְעַבְדִּ֔י (My servant) לְאֶלְיָקִ֖ים (Eliakim) בֶּן־ (son) חִלְקִיָּֽהוּ׃ (of Hilkiah), 21  וְהִלְבַּשְׁתִּ֣יו (and I will clothe him) כֻּתָּנְתֶּ֗ךָ (with your tunic), וְאַבְנֵֽטְךָ֙ (and with your sash) אֲחַזְּקֶ֔נּוּ (strengthen him), וּמֶֽמְשֶׁלְתְּךָ֖ (and your rule) אֶתֵּ֣ן (I will give) בְּיָד֑וֹ (into his hand), וְהָיָ֥ה (and He will be) לְאָ֛ב (as a father) לְיוֹשֵׁ֥ב (to the dwellers) יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (of Jerusalem) וּלְבֵ֥ית (and to the house) יְהוּדָֽה׃ (of Judah). 22  וְנָתַתִּ֛י (And I will place) מַפְתֵּ֥חַ (the key) בֵּית־ (of the house) דָּוִ֖ד (of David) עַל־ (upon) שִׁכְמ֑וֹ (his shoulder); וּפָתַח֙ (And he will open), וְאֵ֣ין (and no one) סֹגֵ֔ר (is shutting); וְסָגַ֖ר (and he will shut), וְאֵ֥ין (and no one) פֹּתֵֽחַ׃ (is opening). 23  וּתְקַעְתִּ֥יו (And I will fasten him) יָתֵ֖ד (like a peg) בְּמָק֣וֹם (in a place) נֶאֱמָ֑ן (that is firm), וְהָיָ֛ה (and he will become) לְכִסֵּ֥א (as a throne) כָב֖וֹד (of glory) לְבֵ֥ית (to the house) אָבִֽיו׃ (of his father).

24  וְתָל֨וּ (And they will hang) עָלָ֜יו (on him) כֹּ֣ל׀ (all) כְּב֣וֹד (the glory) בֵּית־ (of the house), אָבִ֗יו (of his father) הַצֶּֽאֱצָאִים֙ (the offspring) וְהַצְּפִע֔וֹת (and the posterity), כֹּ֖ל (and all) כְּלֵ֣י (the vessels) הַקָּטָ֑ן (of small size), מִכְּלֵי֙ (from all) הָֽאַגָּנ֔וֹת (the cups), וְעַ֖ד (and unto) כָּל־ (all) כְּלֵ֥י (the vessels) הַנְּבָלִֽים׃ (of jars).

25  בַּיּ֣וֹם (Day) הַה֗וּא (In that), נְאֻם֙ (a declaration) יְהוָ֣ה (of YHWH of) צְבָא֔וֹת (Hosts), תָּמוּשׁ֙ (will give way) הַיָּתֵ֔ד (the peg) הַתְּקוּעָ֖ה (that is fastened) בְּמָק֣וֹם (in a place) נֶאֱמָ֑ן (firm), וְנִגְדְּעָ֣ה (it will be sheared off) וְנָפְלָ֗ה (and fall) וְנִכְרַת֙ (and will be cut off) הַמַּשָּׂ֣א (the burden) אֲשֶׁר־ (that was) עָלֶ֔יהָ (on it).

כִּ֥י (For) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) דִּבֵּֽר׃ס (has spoken).
