Yahweh Answers Again

1  עַל־ (Upon) מִשְׁמַרְתִּ֣י (my guard post), אֶעֱמֹ֔דָה (I will stand)

וְאֶֽתְיַצְּבָ֖ה (and I will take my stand) עַל־ (on) מָצ֑וֹר (the rampart),

וַאֲצַפֶּ֗ה (and I will watch) לִרְאוֹת֙ (to see) מַה־ (what) יְדַבֶּר־ (He will say) בִּ֔י (to me)

וּמָ֥ה (and what) אָשִׁ֖יב (I will return) עַל־ (upon) תּוֹכַחְתִּֽי׃ (my reproof).

2  וַיַּעֲנֵ֤נִי (And answered me) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) וַיֹּ֔אמֶר (and said),

כְּת֣וֹב (Write) חָז֔וֹן (the vision),

וּבָאֵ֖ר (and make it plain) עַל־ (upon) הַלֻּח֑וֹת (the tablets),

לְמַ֥עַן (that) יָר֖וּץ (may run) ק֥וֹרֵא (the one calling) בֽוֹ׃ (with it).

3  כִּ֣י (For) ע֤וֹד (yet) חָזוֹן֙ (the vision is) לַמּוֹעֵ֔ד (for an appointed time),

וְיָפֵ֥חַ (and it breathes), לַקֵּ֖ץ (toward the end) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יְכַזֵּ֑ב (will it lie).

אִם־ (If) יִתְמַהְמָהּ֙ (it lingers), חַכֵּה־ (wait) ל֔וֹ (for it)

כִּֽי־ (because) בֹ֥א (coming) יָבֹ֖א (it comes); לֹ֥א (not) יְאַחֵֽר׃ (will it delay for long).

4  הִנֵּ֣ה (Behold), עֻפְּלָ֔ה (one is puffed up) לֹא־ (not) יָשְׁרָ֥ה (is upright) נַפְשׁ֖וֹ (his soul) בּ֑וֹ (within him)

וְצַדִּ֖יק (and the righteous one) בֶּאֱמוּנָת֥וֹ (by his faith) יִחְיֶֽה׃ (will live).

5  וְאַף֙ (And indeed) כִּֽי־ (because) הַיַּ֣יִן (wine), בּוֹגֵ֔ד (is treacherous)

גֶּ֥בֶר (a man), יָהִ֖יר (proud) וְלֹ֣א (and not) יִנְוֶ֑ה (does stay at home),

אֲשֶׁר֩ (who) הִרְחִ֨יב (enlarges) כִּשְׁא֜וֹל (like Sheol), נַפְשׁ֗וֹ (his appetite)

וְה֤וּא (and he is) כַמָּ֙וֶת֙ (like death), וְלֹ֣א (and not) יִשְׂבָּ֔ע (is satisfied),

וַיֶּאֱסֹ֤ף (and he gathers) אֵלָיו֙ (to himself) כָּל־ (all) הַגּוֹיִ֔ם (the nations),

וַיִּקְבֹּ֥ץ (and he collects) אֵלָ֖יו (for himself) כָּל־ (all) הָעַמִּֽים׃ (the peoples).

Woe to the Chaldeans

6  הֲלוֹא־ (Will not) אֵ֣לֶּה (these) כֻלָּ֗ם (all of them) עָלָיו֙ (against him) מָשָׁ֣ל (a clever saying) יִשָּׂ֔אוּ (take up)

וּמְלִיצָ֖ה (and a taunt) חִיד֣וֹת (with riddles) ל֑וֹ (against him) וְיֹאמַ֗ר (and say),

ה֚וֹי (Woe to) הַמַּרְבֶּ֣ה (the one multiplying) לֹּא־ (what is not) ל֔וֹ (unto him)

עַד־ (until) מָתַ֕י (when)

וּמַכְבִּ֥יד (will will he load) עָלָ֖יו (on humself) עַבְטִֽיט׃ (many pledges)!

7  הֲל֣וֹא (Will not) פֶ֗תַע (suddenly) יָק֙וּמוּ֙ (rise up) נֹשְׁכֶ֔יךָ (your creditors)

וְיִקְצ֖וּ (and awaken) מְזַעְזְעֶ֑יךָ (your oppressors)

וְהָיִ֥יתָ (and you will become) לִמְשִׁסּ֖וֹת (as plunder) לָֽמוֹ׃ (for them).

8  כִּֽי (Because) אַתָּ֤ה (you) שַׁלּ֙וֹתָ֙ (have plundered) גּוֹיִ֣ם (nations), רַבִּ֔ים (many)

יְשָׁלּ֖וּךָ (will plunder you) כָּל־ (all) יֶ֣תֶר (the remnant) עַמִּ֑ים (of the peoples)

מִדְּמֵ֤י (from the bloodshed), אָדָם֙ (of man)

וַחֲמַס־ (and the violence) אֶ֔רֶץ (to the land),

קִרְיָ֖ה (so it will be for the city), וְכָל־ (and all those) יֹ֥שְׁבֵי (dwelling) בָֽהּ׃פ (in it).

9  ה֗וֹי (Woe to) בֹּצֵ֛עַ (the one biting off)

בֶּ֥צַע (gain) רָ֖ע (evil) לְבֵית֑וֹ (for his house),

לָשׂ֤וּם (to set) בַּמָּרוֹם֙ (in the heights), קִנּ֔וֹ (his nest)

לְהִנָּצֵ֖ל (that he may be delivered) מִכַּף־ (from the hand) רָֽע׃ (of evil)!

10  יָעַ֥צְתָּ (You have devised) בֹּ֖שֶׁת (shame) לְבֵיתֶ֑ךָ (for your house)

קְצוֹת־ (cutting off) עַמִּ֥ים (peoples), רַבִּ֖ים (many)

וְחוֹטֵ֥א (and sinning against) נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃ (your soul).

11  כִּי־ (For) אֶ֖בֶן (a stone) מִקִּ֣יר (from the wall), תִּזְעָ֑ק (will cry out)

וְכָפִ֖יס (and a beam) מֵעֵ֥ץ (from the timbers) יַעֲנֶֽנָּה׃פ (will answer it).

12  ה֛וֹי (Woe to) בֹּנֶ֥ה (the one building) עִ֖יר (a city) בְּדָמִ֑ים (with bloodshed),

וְכוֹנֵ֥ן (and who establishes) קִרְיָ֖ה (a town) בְּעַוְלָֽה׃ (by injustice)!

13  הֲל֣וֹא (Is it not) הִנֵּ֔ה (behold), מֵאֵ֖ת (from) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֑וֹת (Hosts)

וְיִֽיגְע֤וּ (that the labor) עַמִּים֙ (of the people) בְּדֵי־ (is for feeding) אֵ֔שׁ (the fire),

וּלְאֻמִּ֖ים (and nations) בְּדֵי־ (only in) רִ֥יק (vain) יִעָֽפוּ׃ (weary themselves)?

14  כִּ֚י (For) תִּמָּלֵ֣א (will be filled) הָאָ֔רֶץ (the earth)

לָדַ֖עַת (to know) אֶת־ (-) כְּב֣וֹד (the glory) יְהוָ֑ה (of YHWH),

כַּמַּ֖יִם (as the waters) יְכַסּ֥וּ (cover) עַל־ (over) יָֽם׃ס (the sea).

15  ה֚וֹי (Woe to) מַשְׁקֵ֣ה (the one giving drink) רֵעֵ֔הוּ (to his neighbor),

מְסַפֵּ֥חַ (pouring out) חֲמָתְךָ֖ (your rage) וְאַ֣ף (and even), שַׁכֵּ֑ר (to make him drunk)

לְמַ֥עַן (in order) הַבִּ֖יט (to look) עַל־ (upon) מְעוֹרֵיהֶֽם׃ (his nakedness)!

16  שָׂבַ֤עְתָּ (You have been filled) קָלוֹן֙ (with shame) מִכָּב֔וֹד (instead of glory).

שְׁתֵ֥ה (Drink) גַם־ (also), אַ֖תָּה (you)

וְהֵֽעָרֵ֑ל (and expose your uncircumcision);

תִּסּ֣וֹב (it will turn around) עָלֶ֗יךָ (upon you)

כּ֚וֹס (the cup) יְמִ֣ין (of the right hand) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH)

וְקִיקָל֖וֹן (and disgrace) עַל־ (be upon) כְּבוֹדֶֽךָ׃ (your glory).

17  כִּ֣י (For) חֲמַ֤ס (the violence) לְבָנוֹן֙ (to Lebanon) יְכַסֶּ֔ךָּ (will cover you)

וְשֹׁ֥ד (and the destruction) בְּהֵמ֖וֹת (of the beasts), יְחִיתַ֑ן (will terrify them),

מִדְּמֵ֤י (from the bloodshed), אָדָם֙ (of man)

וַחֲמַס־ (and the violence) אֶ֔רֶץ (to the land),

קִרְיָ֖ה (to the city), וְכָל־ (and all) יֹ֥שְׁבֵי (those dwelling) בָֽהּ׃ס (in it).

18  מָֽה־ (What) הוֹעִ֣יל (profit) פֶּ֗סֶל (is an image)

כִּ֤י (when) פְסָלוֹ֙ (has carved it) יֹֽצְר֔וֹ (its fashioner)

מַסֵּכָ֖ה (a molten image),

וּמ֣וֹרֶה (and a teacher) שָּׁ֑קֶר (of falsehood),

כִּ֣י (For) בָטַ֞ח (trusts) יֹצֵ֤ר (the one fashioning) יִצְרוֹ֙ (in his fashioning) עָלָ֔יו (upon it),

לַעֲשׂ֖וֹת (making) אֱלִילִ֥ים (idols)? אִלְּמִֽים׃ס (Mute).

19  ה֣וֹי (Woe to) אֹמֵ֤ר (the one saying) לָעֵץ֙ (to the wood), הָקִ֔יצָה (Awake);

ע֖וּרִי (Arise), לְאֶ֣בֶן (to a stone), דּוּמָ֑ם (Of silence)

ה֣וּא (it) יוֹרֶ֔ה (can give instruction)!

הִנֵּה־ (Behold), ה֗וּא (it) תָּפוּשׂ֙ (is overlaid) זָהָ֣ב (with gold) וָכֶ֔סֶף (and silver),

וְכָל־ (and any) ר֖וּחַ (breath) אֵ֥ין (not) בְּקִרְבּֽוֹ׃ (is within it).

20  וַֽיהוָ֖ה (And YHWH is) בְּהֵיכַ֣ל (in the temple). קָדְשׁ֑וֹ (Of His holiness)

הַ֥ס (let be silent) מִפָּנָ֖יו (before Him) כָּל־ (all) הָאָֽרֶץ׃פ (the earth).
