1Now I myself, Paul, plead with you with the gentleness and kindness of the Messiah —I who am humble when I am face to face with you but forceful toward you when I am away!

1Αὐτὸς δὲ ἐγὼ Παῦλος παρακαλῶ ὑμᾶς διὰ τῆς πραΰτητος καὶ ἐπιεικείας τοῦ Χριστοῦ ὃς κατὰ πρόσωπον μὲν ταπεινὸς ἐν ὑμῖν ἀπὼν δὲ θαρρῶ εἰς ὑμᾶς

2I beg you that when I come I will not need to be courageous by daring to oppose some people who think that we are living according to the flesh.

2δέομαι δὲ τὸ μὴ παρὼν θαρρῆσαι τῇ πεποιθήσει ᾗ λογίζομαι τολμῆσαι ἐπί τινας τοὺς λογιζομένους ἡμᾶς ὡς κατὰ σάρκα περιπατοῦντας

3Of course, we are living in the world, but we do not wage war in a world-like way.

3Ἐν σαρκὶ γὰρ περιπατοῦντες οὐ κατὰ σάρκα στρατευόμεθα

4For the weapons of our warfare are not those of the world. Instead, they have the power of God to demolish fortresses. We tear down arguments

4τὰ γὰρ ὅπλα τῆς στρατείας ἡμῶν οὐ σαρκικὰ ἀλλὰ δυνατὰ τῷ Θεῷ πρὸς καθαίρεσιν ὀχυρωμάτων

5and every proud obstacle that is raised against the knowledge of God, taking every thought captive in order to obey the Messiah.

5λογισμοὺς καθαιροῦντες καὶ πᾶν ὕψωμα ἐπαιρόμενον κατὰ τῆς γνώσεως τοῦ Θεοῦ καὶ αἰχμαλωτίζοντες πᾶν νόημα εἰς τὴν ὑπακοὴν τοῦ Χριστοῦ

6Once your obedience is complete, we will be ready to reprimand every type of disobedience.

6καὶ ἐν ἑτοίμῳ ἔχοντες ἐκδικῆσαι πᾶσαν παρακοήν ὅταν πληρωθῇ ὑμῶν ἡ ὑπακοή

7Look at the plain facts! If anyone is confident that he belongs to the Messiah, he should remind himself of this: Just as he belongs to the Messiah, so do we.

7Τὰ κατὰ πρόσωπον βλέπετε εἴ τις πέποιθεν ἑαυτῷ Χριστοῦ εἶναι τοῦτο λογιζέσθω πάλιν ἐφ’ ἑαυτοῦ ὅτι καθὼς αὐτὸς Χριστοῦ οὕτως καὶ ἡμεῖς

8So if I boast a little too much about our authority, which the Lord gave us to build you up and not to tear you down, I will not be ashamed of it.

8ἐάν τε γὰρ περισσότερόν τι καυχήσωμαι περὶ τῆς ἐξουσίας ἡμῶν ἧς ἔδωκεν ὁ Κύριος εἰς οἰκοδομὴν καὶ οὐκ εἰς καθαίρεσιν ὑμῶν οὐκ αἰσχυνθήσομαι

9I do not want you to think that I am trying to frighten you with my letters.

9ἵνα μὴ δόξω ὡς ἂν ἐκφοβεῖν ὑμᾶς διὰ τῶν ἐπιστολῶν

10For someone is saying, "His letters are impressive and forceful, but his bodily presence is weak and his speech contemptible."

10Ὅτι Αἱ ἐπιστολαὶ μέν φησίν Βαρεῖαι καὶ ἰσχυραί ἡ δὲ παρουσία τοῦ σώματος ἀσθενὴς καὶ ὁ λόγος ἐξουθενημένος

11Someone like this should take note of the following: What we say by letter when we are absent is what we will do when present!

11τοῦτο λογιζέσθω ὁ τοιοῦτος ὅτι οἷοί ἐσμεν τῷ λόγῳ δι’ ἐπιστολῶν ἀπόντες τοιοῦτοι καὶ παρόντες τῷ ἔργῳ

12We would not dare put ourselves in the same class with, or compare ourselves to, those who recommend themselves. Whenever they measure themselves by their own standards or compare themselves among themselves, they show how foolish they are.

12Οὐ γὰρ τολμῶμεν ἐνκρῖναι ἢ συνκρῖναι ἑαυτούς τισιν τῶν ἑαυτοὺς συνιστανόντων ἀλλὰ αὐτοὶ ἐν ἑαυτοῖς ἑαυτοὺς μετροῦντες καὶ συνκρίνοντες ἑαυτοὺς ἑαυτοῖς οὐ συνιᾶσιν

13We will not boast about what cannot be evaluated. Instead, we will stay within the field that God assigned us, so as to reach even you.

13ἡμεῖς δὲ οὐκ εἰς τὰ ἄμετρα καυχησόμεθα ἀλλὰ κατὰ τὸ μέτρον τοῦ κανόνος οὗ ἐμέρισεν ἡμῖν ὁ Θεὸς μέτρου ἐφικέσθαι ἄχρι καὶ ὑμῶν

14For it is not as though we were overstepping our limits when we came to you. We were the first to reach you with the gospel of the Messiah.

14οὐ γὰρ ὡς μὴ ἐφικνούμενοι εἰς ὑμᾶς ὑπερεκτείνομεν ἑαυτούς ἄχρι γὰρ καὶ ὑμῶν ἐφθάσαμεν ἐν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ τοῦ Χριστοῦ

15We are not boasting about work done by others that cannot be evaluated. On the contrary, we cherish the hope that your faith may continue to grow and enlarge our sphere of action among you until it overflows.

15οὐκ εἰς τὰ ἄμετρα καυχώμενοι ἐν ἀλλοτρίοις κόποις ἐλπίδα δὲ ἔχοντες αὐξανομένης τῆς πίστεως ὑμῶν ἐν ὑμῖν μεγαλυνθῆναι κατὰ τὸν κανόνα ἡμῶν εἰς περισσείαν

16Then we can preach the gospel in the regions far beyond you without boasting about things already accomplished by someone else.

16εἰς τὰ ὑπερέκεινα ὑμῶν εὐαγγελίσασθαι οὐκ ἐν ἀλλοτρίῳ κανόνι εἰς τὰ ἕτοιμα καυχήσασθαι

17"The person who boasts should boast in the Lord."

17Ὁ δὲ καυχώμενος ἐν Κυρίῳ καυχάσθω

18It is not the person who commends himself who is approved, but the person whom the Lord commends.

18οὐ γὰρ ὁ ἑαυτὸν συνιστάνων ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν δόκιμος ἀλλὰ ὃν ὁ Κύριος συνίστησιν
