The Axe Head Floats

Now the sons of the prophets said to Elisha,

The sons of the prophets were groups of men trained and instructed for prophetic service. Elisha served as their recognized leader, continuing the ministry associated with Elijah and guiding those preparing to speak and serve in Israel.

2Ki 4:38 When Elisha returned to Gilgal, there was a famine…
2Ki 4:1 Now the wife of one of the sons of the prophets cried out…
2Ki 2:3 Then the sons of the prophets at Bethel came out to Elisha…

“Please take note that the place where we meet with you

They regularly gathered with Elisha for instruction and fellowship. Their respectful appeal acknowledges his authority and seeks his direction concerning the needs of the community.

1Sa 19:18 So David ran away and escaped. And he went to Samuel…
1Sa 19:20 he sent messengers to seize him. But when they saw the group…
1Sa 10:5 After that you will come to Gibeah of God,…

is too small for us.

The company had grown beyond the capacity of its present meeting place. Their request reveals the increasing number of prophetic disciples under Elisha’s care and the practical need for larger accommodations.

Isa 49:20 Yet the children of your bereavement will say in your hearing,…
Isa 54:2 “Enlarge the site of your tent, stretch out the curtains…
Zec 2:4 Run and tell that young man: ‘Jerusalem will be a city…

Please let us go to the Jordan,

Timber was more readily available near the Jordan than in the hill country around their present dwelling. The Jordan marked the eastern boundary of the land west of the river and was associated with Israel’s entry into Canaan under Joshua.

2Ki 2:6-8 And Elijah said to Elisha, “Please stay here,…
Jos 3:14-17 So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan,…

where each of us can get a log

The sons of the prophets were willing to share the labor of gathering materials rather than placing the burden on a few.

Deu 19:5 If he goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut timber…
2Ch 2:16 We will cut logs from Lebanon, as many as you need, …

so we can build ourselves a place to live there.”

Their growing number had made their existing quarters too small, and they sought a larger common dwelling near the river.

Jer 29:5 Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens…
Amo 9:14 I will restore My people Israel from captivity;…

“Go,” said Elisha.

Elisha approved their practical plan and supported the needs of the prophetic community under his care.

2Ki 4:29 “Tie up your garment, take my staff in your hand…”…
2Ki 5:19 “Go in peace,” said Elisha. But after Naaman had traveled…

Then one of them said,

One of the sons of the prophets spoke for the group, showing their respect for Elisha’s authority and their dependence on his guidance.

Num 13:31 But the men who had gone up with him replied,…
1Sa 20:4 Then Jonathan said to David, “Whatever you desire,…

“Please come with your servants.”

As they prepared to build a larger dwelling near the Jordan, they desired Elisha’s presence with them. His leadership represented the Lord’s direction among the prophetic communities during a time of widespread unfaithfulness in Israel.

Num 10:29 Then Moses said to Hobab, the son of Moses’ father-in-law…
Rut 1:16 But Ruth replied: “Do not urge me to leave you”…

“I will come,” he replied.

Elisha willingly went with them, continuing his faithful care for those under his instruction and sharing in their need.

Gen 24:58 They called Rebekah and asked her, “Will you go with this man?”…
Luk 9:61 Still another said, “I will follow You, Lord;…

So Elisha went with them,

Elisha readily joined the sons of the prophets, showing his personal care for the community under his oversight. Though recognized as the leading prophet in Israel, he did not remain distant from their ordinary needs.

2Ki 2:2-6 “Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me on to Bethel.”…
Rut 1:16-17 But Ruth replied: “Do not urge me to leave you”…

and when they came to the Jordan,

They traveled to the Jordan River, where timber was available for the larger dwelling they planned to build. The river, often associated with decisive acts of God in Israel’s history, would soon become the setting for another display of His power through Elisha.

2Ki 2:7-8 Then a company of fifty of the sons of the prophets…
2Ki 2:14 Then he took the cloak of Elijah and struck the waters.…
Jos 3:14-17 So when the people broke camp to cross the Jordan,…

they began to cut down some trees.

The prophets worked together to prepare building materials, meeting a practical need through shared labor. Their work reflects an orderly community whose spiritual calling did not exclude responsibility for daily provision.

Jos 17:15 Joshua answered them, “If you have so many people…”…
1Ki 5:6 Now therefore, order that cedars of Lebanon be cut down…
Deu 20:19-20 When you lay siege to a city for an extended time…

As one of them was cutting down a tree,

As one of the sons of the prophets was cutting down a tree near the Jordan, the community was working together to enlarge its dwelling under Elisha’s leadership. Their labor reflects the ordinary, practical life of this prophetic community.

“it was borrowed!”

He was accountable for the tool and unable to replace it easily, making the loss both a financial burden and a matter of personal responsibility.

2Ki 4:3-4 “Go,” said Elisha, “borrow empty jars from all your neighbors.…
Pro 22:7 The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower…

“Where did it fall?” asked the man of God.

Elisha, God’s prophet in the Northern Kingdom, immediately addressed the loss of the borrowed axe head. Iron tools were costly, and the loss placed a real burden on the man who had borrowed it.

Luk 15:8-9 Or what woman who has ten silver coins…
1Sa 9:20 As for the donkeys you lost three days ago…

Elisha Captures the Blinded Arameans

Now the king of Aram was at war against Israel.

Aram, centered in Damascus northeast of Israel, was a strong regional kingdom and a recurring enemy during Israel’s divided monarchy. Its campaigns against Israel formed part of the continuing struggle for control of the surrounding territories.

1Ki 20:1-2 Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his entire army.…
2Ki 13:3 So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel,…
2Ki 8:28-29 Then Ahaziah went with Joram son of Ahab to fight…

After consulting with his servants,

The Aramean king planned his operations with military officers and trusted advisers, arranging movements intended to catch Israel unprepared.

1Ki 12:6-7 Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders…
2Ch 10:6-8 Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders…
Pro 20:18 Set plans by consultation, and wage war…

he said, “My camp will be in such and such a place.”

He selected a concealed strategic location for his forces, expecting the plan to remain secret. The events that follow show that the Lord knew Aram’s intentions and preserved Israel through Elisha’s warning.

Jos 8:2-4 And you shall do to Ai and its king as you did to Jericho…
Jdg 20:29-33 So Israel set up an ambush around Gibeah.…
1Sa 23:22-23 Please go and prepare further. Investigate and watch…

Then the man of God sent word to the king of Israel:

Elisha, Elijah’s successor, served as God’s prophet during the reign of Jehoram, son of Ahab. Through him, the Lord gave Israel warning of enemy movements and protected the nation from surprise attacks.

1Ki 20:13 Meanwhile a prophet approached Ahab king of Israel…
2Ki 19:6-7 who replied, “Tell your master that this is what the LORD…
2Sa 12:1 Then the LORD sent Nathan to David, and when he arrived,…

“Be careful not to pass by this place,

Elisha identified a location where danger awaited. The warning gave the king time to alter his route and avoid the trap prepared by Israel’s enemies.

Pro 22:3 The prudent see danger and take cover, but…
Deu 2:5 Do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their…

for the Arameans are going down there.”

Aram, centered in Damascus, was a persistent military threat to the northern kingdom. Its forces were moving into position for an ambush, but their plans were known to God before they could be carried out.

1Ki 20:1-2 Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his entire army.…
2Ki 5:2 At this time the Arameans had gone out in bands…
2Ki 7:6-7 For the Lord had caused the Arameans to hear the sound…

So the king of Israel sent word to the place the man of God had pointed out.

The king was likely Jehoram, son of Ahab, ruling the northern kingdom of Israel. The man of God was Elisha, whose warnings exposed the planned movements of Ben-hadad’s Aramean forces and enabled Israel to avoid ambushes.

1Ki 20:13 Meanwhile a prophet approached Ahab king of Israel…
2Ch 20:20 Early in the morning they got up and left for…
Amo 3:7 Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan…

Time and again Elisha warned the king,

Elisha repeatedly received knowledge of Aram’s military plans from the Lord and relayed it to Israel’s king. God’s intervention preserved Israel during its ongoing conflict with Aram.

2Ki 3:16-19 and he said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Dig this valley…
2Ki 13:14-19 When Elisha had fallen sick with the illness…
2Ki 8:10-13 Elisha answered, “Go and tell him, ‘You will recover.’”…

so that he was on his guard in such places.

The king acted on Elisha’s warnings by strengthening his defenses wherever the Arameans intended to strike. Israel’s safety depended not merely on military preparation but on the Lord’s guidance through His prophet.

Pro 27:12 The prudent see danger and take cover…
Pro 22:3 The prudent see danger and take cover, but…
Neh 4:9 So we prayed to our God and posted a guard…

For this reason the king of Aram became enraged

The king of Aram, likely Ben-Hadad II, saw his campaigns against Israel repeatedly frustrated because Israel knew his intended movements. Aram, centered in modern Syria, was a persistent military threat to the northern kingdom, and the failure of his plans endangered both his military advantage and royal authority.

Est 7:7 In his fury, the king arose from drinking his wine…

and called his servants to demand of them,

He summoned his officers and advisers, the men entrusted with planning and carrying out his military strategy. Their knowledge of the secret plans made them the most likely suspects when Israel appeared prepared for every move.

Dan 2:2 So the king gave orders to summon the magicians, enchanters,…
Gen 41:8 In the morning his spirit was troubled, so he summoned…
Est 1:13-14 Then the king consulted the wise men who knew the times,…

“Tell me, which one of us is on the side of the king of Israel?”

Convinced that someone within his court was betraying him, the king demanded to know who was giving intelligence to Israel. He did not yet understand that Elisha was revealing his plans by God’s power, making the conflict more than a contest of armies and strategy.

2Ki 9:32 He looked up at the window and called out,…
Jos 5:13-14 Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw…
Exo 32:26 So Moses stood at the entrance to the camp…

But one of his servants replied,

For Elisha, the prophet in Israel,

Elisha, Elijah’s successor, receives knowledge from God that no human informant could obtain.

2Ki 3:11 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the LORD…
2Ki 2:15 When the sons of the prophets who were watching him…

tells the king of Israel

Elisha warns Israel’s king, likely Jehoram, of Aram’s intended movements, preserving Israel from repeated ambushes.

1Ki 21:17-19 Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite…
1Ki 22:17-18 So Micaiah declared: “I saw all Israel…
2Ki 3:12-14 Jehoshaphat affirmed, “The word of the LORD is with him.”…

the very words you speak in your bedroom.”

Even the king’s most private conversations are known to God and revealed to His prophet, showing why Aram’s secret plans continually fail.

Jer 23:24 Can a man hide in secret places where I cannot see him?…

So the king said,

The king of Aram, likely Ben-Hadad II, had learned that Elisha was revealing his military plans to Israel and moved personally to stop him.

2Ki 1:9-10 Then King Ahaziah sent to Elijah a captain with his company…
1Sa 19:11-12 Then Saul sent messengers to David’s house…
1Ki 22:26-27 And the king of Israel declared, “Take Micaiah”…

“Go and see where he is,

Elisha’s presence posed a serious threat to Aram’s campaigns because the Lord made the king’s strategies known through the prophet.

1Ki 18:10 As surely as the LORD your God lives, there is no nation…
1Sa 23:23 Observe and find out all the places where he hides.…
1Sa 26:4 David sent out spies to verify that Saul had arrived.

that I may send men to capture him.”

The king treated Elisha as an ordinary enemy and sought to remove him by force, failing to recognize that Elisha’s protection and insight came from God.

1Sa 19:15 But Saul sent the messengers back to see David and told them…
2Ki 10:14 Then Jehu ordered, “Take them alive.” So his men…
1Sa 24:2 So Saul took three thousand chosen men from all Israel…

On receiving the report,

His servants located the prophet through the usual channels of military intelligence.

1Sa 23:27 Then a messenger came to Saul, saying, “Come quickly…
1Ki 20:17 And the young officers of the district governors marched out…
2Sa 13:21 When King David heard all this, he was furious.

“Elisha is in Dothan,”

Dothan was a town in the northern hill country of Israel, north of Samaria, where Elisha was staying.

Gen 37:25 And as they sat down to eat a meal, they looked up…
Gen 37:28 So when the Midianite traders passed by, his brothers…

the king of Aram sent horses, chariots, and a great army.

Determined to seize Elisha, the king dispatched a substantial force from Aram, the Syrian kingdom north of Israel. Elisha’s knowledge of Aram’s military plans had frustrated the king’s campaigns, leading him to treat the prophet as a serious threat.

1Ki 20:1 Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his entire army.…
2Ki 5:9 So Naaman came with his horses and chariots…
1Ch 19:6-7 When the Ammonites realized that they had become a stench,…

They went there by night

The force traveled under cover of darkness to avoid warning Elisha or the inhabitants of Dothan. The operation was intended to secure him quickly before he could escape.

Jos 8:3-4 So Joshua and the whole army set out to attack Ai.…
1Sa 26:7 That night David and Abishai came to the troops,…
Jdg 7:19-22 Gideon and the hundred men with him reached the outskirts…

and surrounded the city.

The Arameans encircled Dothan, intending to trap Elisha within the small Israelite town. Their visible military strength prepared the setting for God’s protection of His servant.

Luk 21:20 But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies,…
2Ki 25:1 Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon marched against Jerusalem…
Jos 6:3-4 March around the city with all the men of war…

When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early in the morning,

Elisha’s attendant began the day unaware that the Syrian army had come against Dothan. The early hour underscores how suddenly the danger became visible.

Gen 22:3 So Abraham got up early the next morning,…
1Sa 17:20 So David got up early in the morning, left the flock…
Mrk 1:35 Early in the morning, while it was still dark,…

behold, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city.

The Syrian force had encircled Dothan to capture Elisha, whose God-given knowledge had frustrated the king of Syria’s military plans. Horses and chariots represented a powerful and intimidating force, leaving the small city apparently trapped.

Luk 21:20 But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies,…
1Ki 20:1 Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his entire army.…
Jos 11:4 So these kings came out with all their armies,…

So he asked Elisha, “Oh, my master, what are we to do?”

Seeing no human means of escape, the servant turned to Elisha in fear. His question prepares for the contrast between what he could see—the enemy’s army—and the greater protection God had already provided.

2Ch 20:12 Our God, will You not judge them? We are powerless…
2Ki 3:11 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the LORD…
1Ki 22:5 But Jehoshaphat also said to the king of Israel,…

“Do not be afraid,”

Elisha addresses his servant’s fear as the Aramean army surrounds Dothan. Though the danger is visible and immediate, the situation is not beyond God’s control.

Gen 15:1 After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram…
Deu 31:6 Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or terrified…
Jos 1:9 Have I not commanded you to be strong and courageous?…

Elisha answered,

God’s prophet responds with confidence because he sees the conflict from the standpoint of God’s power rather than the army’s numbers.

2Ki 5:16 But Elisha replied, “As surely as the LORD lives,”…
2Ki 7:1 Then Elisha said, “Hear the word of the LORD!…
2Ki 3:16-17 and he said, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Dig this valley…

“for those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

Elisha refers to the heavenly army sent by God to protect him and his servant. The surrounding forces of Aram are real, but they are outnumbered by God’s unseen servants, revealed in the next verse as horses and chariots of fire.

2Ch 32:7-8 Be strong and courageous! Do not be afraid…
2Ki 19:35 And that very night the angel of the LORD went out…
2Ch 20:15 And he said, “Listen, all you people of Judah and Jerusalem!…

Then Elisha prayed,

Surrounded by the Syrian army at Dothan, Elisha responded with confidence rather than fear. As Elijah’s successor, he knew that Israel’s security rested not in visible military strength but in the Lord’s power.

1Ki 18:36-37 At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah…
2Ch 20:12 Our God, will You not judge them? We are powerless…
Dan 2:18 urging them to plead for mercy from the God of heaven…

“O LORD, please open his eyes that he may see.”

Elisha asked God to enable his servant to perceive the unseen protection already surrounding them. The servant’s fear came from seeing only the enemy’s forces, while Elisha understood that the Lord had not abandoned them.

Psa 119:18 Open my eyes that I may see wondrous things from Your law.
Luk 24:31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus…
Eph 1:18 I ask that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened,…

And the LORD opened the eyes of the young man,

God answered by granting the servant a real sight of the heavenly forces present at Dothan. The event reveals that God’s help was already in place before the servant recognized it.

Gen 21:19 Then God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water.…
Num 22:31 Then the LORD opened Balaam’s eyes, and he saw…
Act 26:18 open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness…

and he saw that the hills were full of horses and chariots of fire

The fiery horses and chariots were the Lord’s heavenly army, far greater than the Syrian forces below. Their presence showed that God was actively defending His prophet and directing the outcome of the conflict.

2Ki 2:11 As they were walking along and talking together,…
Psa 68:17 The chariots of God are tens of thousands…
Hab 3:8 Were You angry at the rivers, O LORD? Was Your wrath…

all around Elisha.

Elisha stood at the center of God’s protection, not because of his own strength, but because he served as the Lord’s messenger. Though the city appeared surrounded by enemies, the enemy was itself surrounded by the power of God.

Psa 34:7 The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him,…
Psa 125:2 As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds…
Zec 2:5 For I will be a wall of fire around it, declares the LORD,…

As the Arameans came down against him,

The Aramean force came down against Elisha to capture him because he had revealed their king’s plans to Israel. Although surrounded at Dothan, Elisha was protected by the Lord’s heavenly army. As the Arameans approached, Elisha prayed that the Lord would strike them with blindness.

1Ki 20:1 Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his entire army.…
2Ki 5:2 At this time the Arameans had gone out in bands…

Elisha prayed to the LORD,

Rather than calling on Israel’s army or fleeing, Elisha appealed directly to the Lord. His prayer governed the outcome of the encounter and displayed the authority God had given His prophet.

2Ki 4:33-34 So he went in, closed the door behind the two…
1Ki 18:36-37 At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah…

“Please strike these people with blindness.”

Elisha asked that the soldiers be disabled without being killed. Their blindness prevented them from recognizing Elisha or carrying out their mission, placing the entire force under his direction.

Deu 28:28 The LORD will afflict you with madness, blindness,…
Gen 19:11 And they struck the men at the entrance, young and old,…

So He struck them with blindness,

The Lord answered immediately, overturning the advantage of the trained Aramean army through His direct intervention. The soldiers who had come to capture one man became helpless before him as God struck them with blindness.

according to the word of Elisha.

God confirmed Elisha’s prophetic ministry by acting exactly as he had requested. The event demonstrated that Israel’s security rested ultimately not in military strength, but in the Lord who ruled over its enemies.

2Ki 13:19 But the man of God was angry with him and said…
2Ki 7:1 Then Elisha said, “Hear the word of the LORD!…

When they had entered Samaria,

Samaria, the capital of the Northern Kingdom, stood at the center of Israel’s political and military power. At Elisha’s request, the LORD had struck the Aramean raiding party with blindness, and Elisha led them from Dothan into the city. Israel’s enemies were brought without resistance into a fortified stronghold under Israelite control.

1Ki 20:1 Ben-hadad king of Aram assembled his entire army.…
2Ki 17:5 Then the king of Assyria invaded the whole land,…

Elisha said, “O LORD, open the eyes of these men that they may see.”

Elisha now asked the LORD to reverse their blindness. The Arameans had been unable to recognize where Elisha was leading them, but their sight would reveal both their danger and the LORD’s authority over their plans.

Psa 119:18 Open my eyes that I may see wondrous things from Your law.

Then the LORD opened their eyes, and they looked around and discovered that they were in Samaria.

Their restored sight exposed their helpless position within Israel’s capital. The event showed that the LORD could protect His people without battle and place a hostile army entirely at Israel’s mercy. Elisha’s later command to spare them displayed restraint and helped bring an end to the Aramean raids for a time.

Luk 24:31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus…
Psa 146:8 the LORD opens the eyes of the blind,…

And when the king of Israel saw them,

Joram, son of Ahab, found the blinded Aramean force unexpectedly within Samaria after Elisha had led them there. Israel and Aram were frequently at war, and the king faced a military opportunity that could affect the conflict between the two nations.

2Ch 20:12 Our God, will You not judge them? We are powerless…
1Sa 17:24 When all the men of Israel saw Goliath, they fled…

he asked Elisha,

Elisha had directed the events that brought the Arameans into the city, so the king looked to him for instruction. The prophet’s authority stood above the king’s immediate military impulse.

1Ki 22:7 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there not still a prophet…
2Ki 3:11 But Jehoshaphat asked, “Is there no prophet of the LORD…
2Ki 8:8 So the king said to Hazael, “Take a gift in your hand…

“My father, shall I kill them? Shall I kill them?”

Joram addressed Elisha with respect and urgently asked whether the captured enemy should be executed. Such treatment of prisoners was common in ancient warfare, but Elisha would command mercy rather than retaliation, showing that the deliverance had come by God’s power and was not to be used for needless slaughter.

2Ki 13:14 When Elisha had fallen sick with the illness…
1Sa 26:8 Today God has delivered your enemy into your hand.…
1Sa 24:6 So he said to his men, “The LORD forbid…

“Do not kill them,” he replied.

Elisha ordered mercy toward the Aramean soldiers whom God had delivered into Israel’s hands. Though they had come to seize him, they were now helpless captives and were not to be treated as ordinary battlefield enemies.

1Sa 24:6 So he said to his men, “The LORD forbid…
1Sa 26:9-11 But David said to Abishai, “Do not destroy him…
Rom 12:19 Do not avenge yourselves, beloved; leave room…

“Would you kill those you have captured with your own sword or bow?

The king had not defeated these men by military strength; the Lord had struck them with blindness and brought them into Samaria. Elisha reminded him that he had no basis for claiming the rights of a conqueror over prisoners God had delivered without battle.

2Ch 28:9-11 But a prophet of the LORD named Oded was there…
Mat 5:44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray…
Luk 6:27-28 But to those of you who will listen, I say:…

Set food and water before them,

Rather than executing or enslaving the soldiers, the king was to provide for their immediate needs. Feeding them showed that Israel’s victory came from the Lord and that the captives were being released by His direction, not because of weakness.

Pro 25:21-22 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat,…
Rom 12:20 On the contrary, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;…
Exo 23:4-5 If you encounter your enemy’s stray ox or donkey,…

that they may eat and drink

The meal marked the end of hostility for these men. Having been surrounded in Israel’s capital, they experienced both the power of Israel’s God and the unexpected mercy of His people.

Mat 25:35 For I was hungry and you gave Me something to eat,…
1Sa 30:11-12 Now his men found an Egyptian in the field…
1Ki 19:6-8 And he looked around, and there by his head…

and then return to their master.”

The soldiers were to go back to the king of Aram alive, carrying word of what had happened. Their release displayed God’s authority over Israel’s enemies and helped bring an end, for a time, to Aramean raids against Israel.

2Ch 28:15 Then the men who were designated by name arose,…
Phm 1:12-16 I am sending back to you him who is my very heart.…
Gen 24:56 But he replied, “Do not delay me, since the LORD…

So the king prepared a great feast for them,

Rather than executing the captured Arameans, the king of Israel received them as guests. In the ancient world, a shared meal expressed hospitality and established peaceful relations, making this an extraordinary act toward former enemies.

Pro 25:21-22 If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat,…
Mat 5:44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray…
Rom 12:20 On the contrary, “If your enemy is hungry, feed him;…

and after they had finished eating and drinking,

The meal publicly demonstrated that the soldiers had been spared and that Israel did not seek vengeance. Their treatment showed that Elisha’s victory was not meant to produce slaughter but to reveal the Lord’s power and mercy.

Gen 24:54 Then he and the men with him ate and drank…
Gen 31:54 Then Jacob offered a sacrifice on the mountain…

he sent them away,

The Arameans were released unharmed to return home. This ended the immediate threat without further bloodshed and displayed confidence that Israel’s security rested in the Lord rather than in retaliation.

Gen 24:56 But he replied, “Do not delay me, since the LORD…
1Ki 20:34 Ben-hadad said to him, “I will restore the cities my father……

and they returned to their master.

The soldiers carried news of their capture, blindness, restoration, and unexpected release back to the king of Aram. Their return marked the failure of the Aramean expedition and exposed the futility of opposing the God of Israel.

Gen 24:61 Then Rebekah and her servant girls got ready…
Luk 17:7-10 Which of you whose servant comes in from plowing…

And the Aramean raiders did not come into the land of Israel again.

The raids ceased for a time, bringing relief to Israel. God used this merciful response, together with His protection of Elisha, to restrain Aram’s attacks.

1Ki 5:4 But now the LORD my God has given me rest…
2Ch 20:30 Then Jehoshaphat’s kingdom was at peace, for his God…

The Siege and Famine of Samaria

Some time later,

Some time later, after Elisha’s earlier acts of deliverance for Israel, conflict with Aram resumed on a larger scale, plunging the northern kingdom into a severe national crisis.

1Ki 20:22 Afterward, the prophet approached the king of Israel…
2Ki 13:3 So the anger of the LORD burned against Israel,…
2Ki 8:28-29 Then Ahaziah went with Joram son of Ahab to fight…

Ben-hadad king of Aram

Ben-hadad, king of Aram, led the Aramean forces against Israel. Aram, centered in Damascus, was a powerful neighboring kingdom and a persistent enemy of Israel during this period.

Aram assembled his entire army, revealing a major campaign to bring Israel’s capital under its control rather than a limited raid.

Samaria, the fortified capital of the northern kingdom, was surrounded and cut off from outside supplies. The siege soon produced a devastating famine within the city.

So there was a great famine in Samaria.

The Aramean army had cut off the city’s access to food and supplies, leaving its people trapped behind the walls. As Israel’s capital, Samaria was a major political and military target, and the siege brought the population to starvation.

that a donkey’s head sold for eighty shekels of silver,

Even the head of an unclean animal became a costly source of food. The price showed the collapse of normal life and the desperate inflation produced by the famine.

Food had become so scarce that people paid heavily for items normally considered worthless or unfit for food. Samaria’s suffering set the stage for the unexpected deliverance God would soon bring.

Lev 26:26 When I cut off your supply of bread, ten women…

As the king of Israel was passing by on the wall,

Samaria was under Aramean siege and suffering a devastating famine. The king, likely Jehoram son of Ahab, inspected the city’s defenses as its people faced starvation and despair.

Neh 2:13-15 So I went out at night through the Valley Gate…
2Ch 32:5-6 Then Hezekiah worked resolutely to rebuild all…
Ezk 33:2-6 “Son of man, speak to your people and tell them:…

a woman cried out to him,

Her appeal exposed the misery within the besieged city. As Israel’s ruler, the king was expected to hear grievances and uphold justice even amid the national crisis.

2Ki 8:3-5 At the end of seven years, when the woman returned…
1Ki 3:16-22 At that time two prostitutes came to the king…

“Help me, my lord the king!”

She addressed him with the honor due his office and sought relief from a matter too desperate to resolve alone. Her request would reveal the terrible conditions produced by the siege.

2Sa 14:4-7 When the woman from Tekoa went to the king,…
Est 7:3-4 If I have found favor in your sight, O king,…

He answered, “If the LORD does not help you,

With Samaria starving under the Aramean siege, the king admits that he has no resources left to meet the woman’s plea. Food supplies have failed, and neither royal authority nor human effort can relieve the crisis.

Psa 121:1-2 A song of ascents. I lift up my eyes to the hills.…
Psa 124:8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, the Maker of heaven…
2Ch 14:11 Then Asa cried out to the LORD his God: “O LORD,…

where can I find help for you?

His question exposes the desperation within the city. The king cannot provide what the famine has taken away, and the people are suffering the consequences of the prolonged siege.

Psa 60:11 Give us aid against the enemy, for the help of man…
Lam 4:17 All the while our eyes were failing as we looked…
Psa 146:3 Put not your trust in princes, in mortal man…

From the threshing floor or the winepress?”

These places, symbols of agricultural abundance and prosperity, normally supplied grain and wine after harvest, but both were empty during the famine. The king points to the absence of the basic provisions on which the city depended.

Hos 9:2 The threshing floor and winepress will not feed them,…
Jol 1:10-12 The field is ruined; the land mourns…
Hag 1:11 I have summoned a drought on the fields and on the mountains…

Then the king asked her, “What is the matter?”

As the king walked along Samaria’s wall during the Aramean siege, a woman appealed to him for judgment. Likely Jehoram, he was responsible for the city’s welfare but could not relieve the famine or break the siege.

2Ki 8:5-6 And Gehazi was telling the king how Elisha had brought…
2Sa 14:5-7 “What troubles you?” the king asked her.…
Est 5:3 “What is it, Queen Esther?” the king inquired.…

And she answered, “This woman said to me, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him,

Her complaint exposed the dreadful conditions within the city. Starvation had brought the people to acts forbidden by nature and condemned in the covenant warnings God had given Israel.

Deu 28:53 Then you will eat the fruit of your womb,…
Lev 26:29 You will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters.
Lam 4:10 The hands of compassionate women have cooked…

and tomorrow we will eat my son.’

The women had made a desperate agreement to consume their children on successive days, showing the collapse of order, compassion, and hope under the siege.

Lam 2:20 Look, O LORD, and consider: Whom have You ever treated…
Jer 19:9 I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters,…
Ezk 5:10 As a result, fathers among you will eat their sons…

So we boiled my son and ate him,

The siege had reduced Samaria to a condition of unimaginable famine, where normal human affection and moral restraint were overwhelmed by desperation. The women’s account reveals the terrible reality inside the city as the Aramean army cut off its food supply.

Lam 4:10 The hands of compassionate women have cooked…
Deu 28:53 Then you will eat the fruit of your womb,…
Lev 26:29 You will eat the flesh of your own sons and daughters.

and the next day I said to her, ‘Give up your son, that we may eat him.’

Having fulfilled her part of their dreadful agreement, the first woman demanded that the other do the same. Their arrangement shows how completely suffering and fear had shattered the order of family and community.

Jer 19:9 I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and daughters,…
Deu 28:54-57 The most gentle and refined man among you will begrudge…
Lam 2:20 Look, O LORD, and consider: Whom have You ever treated…

But she had hidden her son.”

The other mother concealed her child rather than surrender him, breaking the agreement and bringing the dispute before the king. Her action preserves a remaining instinct to protect her son, while exposing the depth of Samaria’s misery under the siege.

Exo 2:2-3 and she conceived and gave birth to a son.…
Heb 11:23 By faith Moses’ parents hid him for three months…
2Ki 11:2 But Jehosheba daughter of King Joram, the sister of Ahaziah…

When the king heard the words of the woman,

Jehoram heard firsthand the horrors produced by the Aramean siege of Samaria. The famine had become so severe that mothers resorted to cannibalism, exposing both the city’s desperation and Israel’s covenant rebellion.

2Sa 14:4-8 When the woman from Tekoa went to the king,…
2Ki 8:3-6 At the end of seven years, when the woman returned…
1Ki 3:16-28 At that time two prostitutes came to the king…

he tore his clothes.

The king publicly expressed grief and alarm, yet his later anger toward Elisha showed that his distress did not lead to humble submission to the Lord.

2Ki 22:11 When the king heard the words of the Book of the Law,…
2Ki 19:1 On hearing this report, King Hezekiah tore his clothes…
Jos 7:6 Then Joshua tore his clothes and fell facedown…

And as he passed by on the wall,

From the city wall, Jehoram oversaw Samaria’s defenses and witnessed the suffering of its people during the siege.

Neh 12:31-40 Then I brought the leaders of Judah up on the wall,…
2Sa 11:2 One evening David got up from his bed and strolled around…

the people saw the sackcloth under his clothes next to his skin.

Beneath his royal garments, the king wore sackcloth, a sign of mourning and possible repentance. Its concealment suggests private anguish, but his response to the crisis revealed an unresolved heart.

1Ki 21:27 When Ahab heard these words, he tore his clothes,…
Jon 3:6 When word reached the king of Nineveh, he got up…

He announced,

King Jehoram spoke in outrage after hearing of the horrors caused by Samaria’s siege and famine. Rather than humbling himself before the Lord, he directed his anger against Elisha.

1Sa 3:17 “What was the message He gave you?” Eli asked.…
2Ki 1:9 Then King Ahaziah sent to Elijah a captain with his company…

“May God punish me, and ever so severely,

The king bound himself with a solemn oath, calling for God’s judgment upon himself if he failed to carry out his threat.

2Sa 3:35 Then all the people came and urged David to eat something…
1Ki 2:23 Then King Solomon swore by the LORD: “May God punish me,…
1Ki 19:2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying,…

if the head of Elisha son of Shaphat

Elisha had faithfully represented the Lord in Israel, yet Jehoram treated him as the cause of the nation’s suffering. The king’s words reveal his determination to have the prophet executed.

1Ki 19:19-21 So Elijah departed and found Elisha son of Shaphat.…
1Ki 19:16 You are also to anoint Jehu son of Nimshi as king…
1Ki 18:4 for when Jezebel had slaughtered the prophets of the LORD…

Beheading was the punishment Jehoram intended, expressing both his rage and his rejection of God’s messenger.

1Sa 31:9 They cut off Saul’s head, stripped off his armor,…
2Sa 4:8 They brought the head of Ish-bosheth to David at Hebron…
1Sa 17:51 David ran and stood over him. He grabbed the Philistine’s sword…

through this day!”

Jehoram demanded immediate action, showing the desperation and rashness produced by the city’s desperate conditions.

2Ki 7:1 Then Elisha said, “Hear the word of the LORD!…
Deu 30:19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you today…
Jos 24:15 But if it is unpleasing in your sight to serve the LORD,…

Now Elisha was sitting in his house, and the elders were sitting with him.

During the Aramean siege of Samaria, Elisha remained among the city’s leaders. The elders’ presence shows that they recognized his authority and sought counsel in the crisis.

Ezk 8:1 In the sixth year, on the fifth day of the sixth month,…
1Sa 7:6 When they had gathered at Mizpah, they drew water…

The king sent a messenger ahead, but before he arrived, Elisha said to the elders,

The king acted in anger and desperation, yet Elisha knew the messenger’s purpose before he arrived because the Lord revealed it to him.

1Ki 19:2-3 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying,…
2Ki 1:9-12 Then King Ahaziah sent to Elijah a captain with his company…

“Do you see how this murderer has sent someone to cut off my head?

Elisha held the king responsible for bloodshed and for rejecting God’s rule. Rather than humbling himself before the Lord during the famine, the king blamed God’s prophet.

1Ki 21:19-24 Tell him that this is what the LORD says:…
2Ki 9:7-10 And you are to strike down the house of your master Ahab,…

Look, when the messenger comes, shut the door to keep him out.

Elisha instructed the elders to prevent the messenger from carrying out the king’s order. God’s prophet was not at the mercy of an enraged ruler.

Gen 19:6-11 Lot went outside to meet them, shutting the door behind him.…
2Ki 4:33 So he went in, closed the door behind the two…

Is not the sound of his master’s footsteps behind him?”

The king was following close behind his messenger, intending to confront Elisha himself. His arrival would bring the conflict between the king’s unbelief and God’s word through Elisha into the open.

1Ki 21:8-11 Then Jezebel wrote letters in Ahab’s name,…
2Ki 9:18-20 So a horseman rode off to meet Jehu and said…

While Elisha was still speaking with them,

Elisha was meeting with the elders of Israel as Samaria suffered under the Aramean siege. The elders had come to him in the midst of the crisis, recognizing that the prophet spoke for the LORD.

Luk 8:49 While He was still speaking, someone arrived…
Act 10:44 While Peter was still speaking these words, …
Mat 17:5 While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped…

the messenger came down to him.

The king had sent a messenger to Elisha, apparently with orders to seize or kill him. The king himself followed soon afterward, driven by the desperate conditions within the city.

1Ki 22:13 Then the messenger who had gone to call Micaiah…
1Ki 19:2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying,…
2Ki 5:10 Then Elisha sent him a messenger, who said, “Go and wash…

And the king said,

Jehoram openly addressed Elisha after arriving at his house. Though he recognized God’s hand in the disaster, he responded with anger rather than repentance.

2Ki 20:3 “Please, O LORD, remember how I have walked…”…
2Ch 20:12 Our God, will You not judge them? We are powerless…
2Sa 24:17 When David saw the angel striking down the people,…

“This calamity is from the LORD.

The siege and famine were God’s judgment upon Israel’s continued rebellion. The king understood that the LORD had allowed the calamity, yet he blamed God without humbling himself before Him.

Amo 3:6 If a ram’s horn sounds in a city, do the people not tremble?…
Lam 3:38 Do not both adversity and good come from the mouth…
Isa 45:7 I form the light and create the darkness;…

Why should I wait for the LORD any longer?”

Having lost hope of deliverance, the king refused to wait for God’s mercy. His impatience stood in contrast to Elisha’s confidence that the LORD would soon bring relief.

Psa 27:14 Wait patiently for the LORD; be strong and courageous.…
Hab 2:3 For the vision awaits an appointed time;…
Psa 130:5 I wait for the LORD; my soul does wait, and in His word…
