Laws about Offerings

Then the LORD said to Moses,

God continued to direct Israel through Moses after the rebellion at Kadesh-barnea and the judgment that condemned the unbelieving generation to die in the wilderness. Though the people had failed, the Lord had not abandoned His covenant purposes. The instructions that follow look ahead to Israel’s eventual entrance into the land promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The LORD spoke personally to Moses, the appointed leader through whom He gave His law and governed the nation. Moses stood between God and Israel as prophet, lawgiver, and intercessor, foreshadowing Christ, the greater mediator who brings God’s final revelation and establishes the new covenant.

and you present a food offering to the LORD

Offerings formed a central part of Israel’s covenant worship, expressing gratitude, obedience, and dependence on God. “Food offering” referred to sacrifices honoring God and acknowledging His provision and sovereignty. They were not given because God needed food, but as appointed acts of devotion and acknowledgment of His authority.

from the herd or flock

The sacrifice came from cattle, sheep, or goats—animals that represented real wealth and labor in Israel’s agrarian life. Bringing such an animal required a costly offering from what God had provided.

shall also present a grain offering

Grain offerings accompanied certain animal sacrifices and acknowledged the LORD as the giver of the land’s produce and daily provision. They expressed devotion through the fruit of a person’s labor.

Lev 2:1 “When anyone brings a grain offering to the LORD,…
Lev 2:4 Now if you bring an offering of grain baked in an oven…
Lev 6:14 Now this is the law of the grain offering:…

of a tenth of an ephah of fine flour

The required measure, a tenth of an ephah—an ancient Israelite dry measure of roughly 22 liters or 5.8 gallons—provided an appropriate portion for a lamb sacrifice. Fine flour represented a prepared and valuable offering, reflecting care in what was brought before the LORD.

Num 28:5 along with a tenth of an ephah of fine flour…
Exo 16:36 (Now an omer is a tenth of an ephah.)

mixed with a quarter hin of olive oil.

Olive oil enriched the flour and was a costly staple in Israelite life. Its inclusion completed the prescribed offering and demonstrated that worship involved both livestock and the produce of the land.

Lev 2:5 If your offering is a grain offering prepared on a griddle,…

With the burnt offering or sacrifice of each lamb,

With the burnt offering or sacrifice of each lamb, the prescribed grain and drink offerings were also presented to the LORD. The burnt offering expressed atonement and complete consecration, while the lamb’s innocence foreshadowed Christ, the Lamb of God who bore sin.

Rams were regularly offered in Israel’s sacrificial worship, especially in burnt offerings and peace offerings. Their value and strength made them fitting sacrifices of dedication and fellowship before the Lord.

Lev 8:22 After that, Moses presented the other ram…

you are to prepare a grain offering

The accompanying grain offering expressed gratitude for God’s provision and the dedication of the worshiper’s labor to Him. It complemented the animal sacrifice without replacing it.

Lev 2:1 “When anyone brings a grain offering to the LORD,…

of two-tenths of an ephah of fine flour

This substantial measure of finely ground flour reflected the value of the offering. Its quality was appropriate for worship and pictured the purity required in approaching God.

Lev 24:5 You are also to take fine flour and bake twelve loaves…

mixed with a third of a hin of olive oil,

Olive oil enriched the offering and was essential in Israel’s worship, being used for food, light, and consecration. Its inclusion completed the prescribed offering presented with the ram.

Num 28:12 along with three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour…
Exo 29:40 With the first lamb offer a tenth of an ephah…

and a third of a hin of wine as a drink offering,

The wine accompanied the prescribed grain offering for the ram. A hin was a standard liquid measure, and a third of a hin provided a substantial portion of wine to be poured out before the LORD. The drink offering expressed the worshiper’s complete devotion, as what was offered was not retained for personal use but given wholly to God.

a pleasing aroma to the LORD.

The sacrifice was acceptable because it was presented according to God’s command and with obedient faith. Its pleasing aroma signified the LORD’s acceptance of the worshiper and foreshadowed Christ’s complete offering of Himself to God.

or sacrifice to fulfill a vow

A vow was a binding promise made before God, often in response to His help or blessing. Bringing the required sacrifice demonstrated that the worshiper had faithfully fulfilled what he had pledged.

or as a peace offering to the LORD,

A peace offering expressed thanksgiving, fellowship, or the fulfillment of a vow. The fat was burned to the LORD, while portions were shared by the priests and worshiper in a sacrificial meal, marking peace with God and fellowship among His people.

A bull was the largest and most costly animal normally brought for sacrifice, fitting offerings connected with vows, freewill worship, or major acts of devotion. Its presentation required substantial resources and reflected the seriousness of approaching God according to His appointed order.

a grain offering

The animal sacrifice was accompanied by an offering from the produce of the land. Fine flour, oil, and wine acknowledged that Israel’s livestock and harvest alike came from the Lord.

Lev 2:1 “When anyone brings a grain offering to the LORD,…
Num 28:5 along with a tenth of an ephah of fine flour…
Lev 7:9 Likewise, every grain offering that is baked in an oven…

of three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour

The required amount increased with the size of the animal. Three-tenths of an ephah was a generous portion, ensuring that the offering matched the value of the bull and represented the worshiper’s best produce.

Num 28:12 along with three-tenths of an ephah of fine flour…
Num 29:14 along with the grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah…
Lev 14:10 On the eighth day he is to bring two unblemished male lambs…

mixed with half a hin of olive oil.

Olive oil enriched the flour offering and made it suitable for presentation on the altar. The specified measure shows that Israel’s worship was governed by God’s instruction rather than personal preference.

Exo 29:40 With the first lamb offer a tenth of an ephah…
Lev 2:4 Now if you bring an offering of grain baked in an oven…
Lev 24:2 Command the Israelites to bring you pure oil for the light,…

Also present half a hin of wine as a drink offering.

Half a hin was about 1.75 liters of wine. Poured out at the altar, it accompanied the sacrifice of a ram and expressed the complete dedication of the worshiper and his offering to the LORD.

Ezr 8:35 Then the exiles who had returned from captivity…
Ezk 45:23-24 Each day during the seven days of the feast,…

This is how you must prepare each one,

Every animal presented with its required grain offering and drink offering was to be prepared according to the pattern God had given. The same order governed Israel’s worship, whether the sacrifice was offered by an individual or for the community.

Offerings for Unintentional Sins

Now if you stray unintentionally

God made provision for sins committed through ignorance or error rather than deliberate rebellion. Such failures still affected the worship and purity of Israel, requiring atonement according to the instructions that follow.

Lev 4:2 Tell the Israelites to do as follows with one who sins…
Lev 5:15 If someone acts unfaithfully and sins unintentionally…
Psa 19:12 Who can discern his own errors? Cleanse me…

and do not obey all these commandments

Israel was responsible for the whole body of God’s revealed law, not merely selected commands. The covenant called the nation to obedience in every area of life as God’s holy people.

Deu 28:15 If, however, you do not obey the LORD your God…
Deu 11:28 but a curse if you disobey the commandments of the LORD…
1Ki 9:6 But if indeed you or your sons turn away from following Me…

that the LORD has spoken to Moses—

The commands came from the LORD and were delivered through Moses, His appointed mediator and leader of Israel. Their authority rested on God’s word, not on human custom or preference.

Lev 1:1 Then the LORD called to Moses and spoke to him…
Exo 19:9 The LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I will come to you…
Num 12:8 I speak with him face to face, clearly and not in riddles;…

all that the LORD has commanded you through Moses

God gave Israel His commands through Moses, who served as the covenant mediator at Sinai. These instructions governed Israel’s worship, moral conduct, community life, and separation from the practices of surrounding nations.

from the day the LORD gave them

The law was given in the historical setting of Israel’s covenant with God at Mount Sinai. It defined the responsibilities of a people redeemed from Egypt and set apart for the Lord’s service.

Exo 24:12 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Come up to Me on the mountain…
Deu 4:10 The day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb,…

and continuing through the generations to come—

Israel was to preserve and obey God’s commands beyond the wilderness generation. The covenant instruction was to shape the nation’s life from one generation to the next, maintaining its identity as God’s holy people.

Exo 31:16 The Israelites must keep the Sabbath, celebrating it…
Exo 12:17 So you are to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread,…
Lev 23:14 You must not eat any bread or roasted or new grain…

and if it was done unintentionally without the knowledge of the congregation,

Provision was made for sins arising from ignorance or error rather than deliberate rebellion. Because the offense involved the whole community, Israel was responsible to address it publicly once it became known.

The priest is to make atonement for the whole congregation of Israel,

When the community had sinned unintentionally, the priest represented the people before the LORD and carried out the required sacrifices. Israel’s covenant life included corporate responsibility, since the sin of the congregation affected the nation’s standing before God.

Lev 16:17 No one may be in the Tent of Meeting from the time…
Lev 10:17 Why didn’t you eat the sin offering in the holy place?…

so that they may be forgiven;

God provided forgiveness through the atoning sacrifice He commanded. The offering restored the congregation to covenant fellowship and demonstrated that sin could not be overlooked, even when it was not deliberate.

Lev 4:20 He shall offer this bull just as he did the bull…
Lev 5:10 And the priest must prepare the second bird…

for the sin was unintentional

The law distinguished sins committed in ignorance or error, without deliberate intent, from willful rebellion. Provision was made for unintentional sin when it became known, while deliberate defiance of God’s command brought more serious judgment.

Lev 4:2 Tell the Israelites to do as follows with one who sins…
Lev 5:15-16 If someone acts unfaithfully and sins unintentionally…

The sacrifices were brought before the LORD because reconciliation depended on His appointed means of atonement. These offerings anticipated the complete and final sacrifice of Christ, who secured lasting forgiveness for His people.

Lev 4:13-15 Now if the whole congregation of Israel strays…
Heb 9:7 But only the high priest entered the second room,…

Then the whole congregation of Israel

Israel stood before God as a covenant people, accountable not only as individuals but also as a nation. When the community sinned unknowingly, the prescribed sacrifice provided cleansing for the whole assembly.

Num 14:5 Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown before the assembly…
Num 16:3 They came together against Moses and Aaron and told them…

and the foreigners residing among them

Non-Israelites who lived among Israel and joined themselves to the community were included in this provision. God required one standard of worship and atonement for both Israelites and those dwelling among them.

Lev 24:22 You are to have the same standard of law…
Jos 8:35 There was not a word of all that Moses had commanded…

Forgiveness came through the sacrifice God appointed, demonstrating that sin required atonement and that God graciously provided a way for restoration. These sacrifices pointed forward to the complete forgiveness secured through Christ’s sacrifice.

The law distinguished sins committed in ignorance from deliberate rebellion. Unintentional sin still required atonement, yet God made provision for those who had not knowingly defied His command.

Lev 4:2 Tell the Israelites to do as follows with one who sins…
Lev 5:15 If someone acts unfaithfully and sins unintentionally…

Also, if one person sins unintentionally,

God provided atonement for an individual who violated His command through unintentional sin, without deliberate intent or awareness. Such sin still required cleansing, since ignorance did not remove guilt, but it was distinguished from defiant sin.

Lev 4:2 Tell the Israelites to do as follows with one who sins…
Lev 5:17 If someone sins and violates any of the LORD’s commandments…

The offender was to bring an acceptable animal of the required kind and age, demonstrating personal responsibility and obedience. The female goat was the prescribed offering for an ordinary Israelite in this case.

Lev 6:25 Tell Aaron and his sons that this is the law…
Lev 16:5 And he shall take from the congregation of Israel…

Lev 4:2 Tell the Israelites to do as follows with one who sins…

The completed sacrifice confirmed that God had accepted the appointed means of cleansing. Blood sacrifice showed that sin brought death and that forgiveness required the life God provided through the offering.

Lev 14:20 and offer it on the altar, with the grain offering…
Lev 15:15 The priest is to sacrifice them, one as a sin offering…

God granted real forgiveness to the repentant offender who followed His command. The priestly sacrifices anticipated Christ’s final sacrifice, by which He secured complete forgiveness for His people.

Lev 4:35 And he shall remove all the fat, just as the fat of the lamb…
Lev 5:10 And the priest must prepare the second bird…

You shall have the same law for the one who acts in error,

God required a single standard for unintentional sin within Israel’s community. Provision was made for atonement because human beings could act “in error,” through ignorance or mistake, yet such sin still required cleansing before God.

Lev 4:2 Tell the Israelites to do as follows with one who sins…
Lev 4:27 And if one of the common people sins unintentionally…
Lev 5:17 If someone sins and violates any of the LORD’s commandments…

whether he is a native-born Israelite

Israelites, as members of the covenant nation, were responsible to obey the commands given through Moses. Their privileged position before God did not exempt them from accountability.

Lev 24:22 You are to have the same standard of law…
Exo 12:49 The same law shall apply to both the native…
Num 9:14 If a foreigner dwelling among you wants to observe…

or a foreigner residing among you.

Resident foreigners who lived among Israel were also subject to God’s law and could receive the prescribed atonement. Israel’s worship and justice were not governed by separate standards based on ancestry, but by the holiness of the Lord who ruled over all within the camp.

Lev 19:33-34 When a foreigner resides with you in your land,…
Deu 24:14 Do not oppress a hired hand who is poor and needy…
Exo 23:9 Do not oppress a foreign resident, since you yourselves know…

But the person who sins defiantly,

Deliberate rebellion against God stood apart from unintentional sin, for which the Law provided sacrifices. Such sin was a willful rejection of God’s authority rather than a failure committed in ignorance.

Psa 19:13 Keep Your servant also from willful sins;…

Israelites and resident foreigners were equally accountable to the Lord’s commands while living among His people. God’s standard did not change according to ancestry or social standing.

Lev 24:22 You are to have the same standard of law…
Exo 12:49 The same law shall apply to both the native…
Lev 17:15 And any person, whether native or foreigner…

blasphemes the LORD.

Open defiance dishonored the Lord and treated His holiness with contempt—blasphemy, speaking or acting against God’s honor and holiness. It was not merely a private wrongdoing but rebellion against the God who had redeemed and governed Israel.

Lev 24:16 Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD…
Lev 24:11 The son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name…
Exo 20:7 You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain…

That person shall be cut off from among his people.

The offender was cut off, removed from the covenant community through excommunication or even death. The penalty guarded the holiness of Israel and showed the grave consequences of defying God without repentance.

Gen 17:14 But if any male is not circumcised, he will be…
Lev 7:20 If anyone who is unclean eats meat from the peace offering…
Exo 12:15 For seven days you must eat unleavened bread.…

He shall certainly be cut off,

Deliberate rebellion against God brought being cut off from the covenant community, often through excommunication or death, under God’s authority. In Israel, such sin could lead to death, showing that open defiance of the Lord was not treated as a private matter.

Gen 17:14 But if any male is not circumcised, he will be…
Exo 31:14 Keep the Sabbath, for it is holy. Anyone who profanes it…
Lev 7:20 If anyone who is unclean eats meat from the peace offering…

because he has despised the word of the LORD

The offender has knowingly rejected God’s revealed will rather than sinned unintentionally. His actions express contempt for the Lord who redeemed and governed Israel.

A Sabbath-Breaker Stoned

While the Israelites were in the wilderness,

Israel was living under the law God had given through Moses during the forty years between Egypt and the promised land. The wilderness was a place of testing, instruction, and dependence on God.

Exo 16:35 The Israelites ate manna forty years…
Deu 8:2 Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you…
Psa 78:52 He led out His people like sheep and guided them…

a man was found gathering wood

His work was observed and reported, making the violation a public matter for the community. Even an ordinary task became serious when done in defiance of God’s command.

Lev 24:10-12 Now the son of an Israelite mother and an Egyptian father…
1Ki 17:12 But she replied, “As surely as the LORD your God lives,…
Act 28:3 Paul gathered a bundle of sticks, and as he laid them…

on the Sabbath day.

The Sabbath was set apart for rest and worship as a sign of Israel’s covenant with the Lord. By gathering wood, the man disregarded a clear command and challenged the holiness God required among His people.

Exo 20:8-11 Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy.…
Deu 5:12-15 Observe the Sabbath day by keeping it holy,…
Jer 17:21-22 This is what the LORD says: Take heed for yourselves;…

Those who found the man gathering wood

Gathering wood on the Sabbath violated God’s command to cease from ordinary labor and keep the day holy. Though the task appeared simple, it openly disregarded a clear requirement given to Israel.

Exo 16:27-29 Yet on the seventh day some of the people went out…
Exo 31:14-15 Keep the Sabbath, for it is holy. Anyone who profanes it…

brought him to Moses, Aaron, and the whole congregation,

The case was presented before Israel’s recognized leaders and the assembled community because the offense concerned the covenant holiness of the nation. Moses and Aaron sought the Lord’s direction, while the congregation witnessed that God’s law was administered openly and justly.

Lev 24:11-14 The son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name…
Deu 17:8-13 If a case is too difficult for you to judge,…

and because it had not been declared what should be done to him,

Although Sabbath observance had been commanded, the prescribed judgment for this particular act had not yet been revealed. Israel did not presume to impose a penalty without seeking the Lord’s direction, recognizing that His law governed the community.

Lev 24:12 They placed him in custody until the will of the LORD…
Deu 17:8-13 If a case is too difficult for you to judge,…
Num 27:5 So Moses brought their case before the LORD,

they placed him in custody.

The man was held until Moses received God’s judgment. Custody preserved order and allowed the matter to be decided according to the Lord’s will rather than human assumption.

2Ch 18:26 Put this man in prison and feed him only bread and water…
Act 12:4 He arrested him and put him in prison, handing him over…
Act 5:18 and arrested the apostles and put them in the public jail.

And the LORD said to Moses,

God gave Moses the final judgment concerning the man who had deliberately violated the Sabbath command. Moses served as the appointed mediator through whom God directed Israel’s civil and religious life.

Exo 4:19 Now the LORD had said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt,…
Exo 6:13 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron, giving them a charge…
Lev 1:1 Then the LORD called to Moses and spoke to him…

“The man must surely be put to death.

The penalty showed that open defiance of God’s command was a serious offense. The Sabbath was holy, established by God as a sign of Israel’s covenant relationship with Him, and its willful violation could not be treated lightly.

Exo 31:14 Keep the Sabbath, for it is holy. Anyone who profanes it…
Exo 35:2 For six days work may be done, but the seventh day…
Lev 24:16 Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD…

The whole congregation is to stone him

The community was required to carry out the sentence, recognizing its shared duty to uphold God’s law and remove rebellion from among the people.

Lev 24:14 Take the blasphemer outside the camp…
Deu 13:10 Stone him to death for trying to turn you away…
Jos 7:25 “Why have you brought this trouble upon us?” said Joshua.…

outside the camp.”

The execution took place away from the camp, preserving the purity of the place where the LORD dwelt among Israel.

Lev 24:23 Then Moses spoke to the Israelites, and they took…
Heb 13:12-13 And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate…
Lev 4:12 all the rest of the bull—he must take outside the camp…

So the whole congregation

Israel acted together as God’s covenant people, bearing shared responsibility to uphold His law.

Deu 17:7 The hands of the witnesses shall be the first…
Deu 13:9-11 Instead, you must surely kill him. Your hand must be…
Jos 7:24-25 Then Joshua, together with all Israel, took Achan…

took the man outside the camp

The offender was removed from the camp, where the Lord dwelt among His people, preserving its holiness.

Lev 24:14 Take the blasphemer outside the camp…
Lev 13:46 As long as he has the infection, he remains unclean.…
Heb 13:12-13 And so Jesus also suffered outside the city gate…

and stoned him to death,

The communal execution demonstrated the seriousness of deliberate Sabbath violation and warned against rebellion against God’s covenant commands.

Lev 24:16 Whoever blasphemes the name of the LORD…
Deu 13:10 Stone him to death for trying to turn you away…
Act 7:58 They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him.…

as the LORD had commanded Moses.

The people carried out the judgment according to the Lord’s direct instruction, acknowledging His authority over Israel.

Exo 40:16 Moses did everything just as the LORD had commanded him.
Exo 39:42-43 The Israelites had done all the work just as the LORD…
Lev 8:4 So Moses did as the LORD had commanded him,…

The Law of Tassels

And the LORD said to Moses,

God gave Moses further instruction for Israel as they prepared to live under His covenant in the land. Moses received and conveyed God’s commands as Israel’s appointed leader and mediator, establishing that the regulations which follow came from divine authority rather than human custom.

Exo 14:26 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand…
Exo 25:1 Then the LORD said to Moses,
Lev 1:1 Then the LORD called to Moses and spoke to him…

“Speak to the Israelites

God entrusted Moses to deliver His commands to the covenant people. Israel was to live distinctly among the nations, ordered by the laws God had given them.

Lev 1:2 “Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When any of you”…
Lev 4:2 Tell the Israelites to do as follows with one who sins…

and tell them that throughout the generations to come

The instruction was intended to remain in Israel’s life beyond the wilderness generation. Parents were to pass on obedience to their children as part of the nation’s continuing covenant responsibility.

Exo 12:14 And this day will be a memorial for you,…
Exo 12:17 So you are to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread,…

they are to make for themselves tassels

The tassels provided a visible reminder that the Israelites belonged to the Lord and were accountable to keep His commandments in ordinary life.

Deu 22:12 You are to make tassels on the four corners…
Mat 23:5 All their deeds are done for men to see.…

for the corners of their garments,

Attached to the outer garment, they would be regularly seen and handled. Their position made the reminder part of daily dress rather than something reserved for worship alone.

Rut 3:9 “Who are you?” he asked. “I am your servant Ruth…”…
Ezk 16:8 Then I passed by and saw you, and you were old enough…

with a blue cord on each tassel.

The blue thread connected the tassels with the colors used in the tabernacle and priestly service, pointing to the holiness of the God who had called Israel to be holy.

Exo 28:37 Fasten to it a blue cord to mount it on the turban;…
Exo 39:31 Then they fastened to it a blue cord to mount it…

These will serve as tassels for you to look at,

Worn on the corners of Israelite garments, the tassels, or tzitzit, marked the people as belonging to the LORD. Their visible presence provided a daily reminder of the covenant God had established with Israel.

Deu 22:12 You are to make tassels on the four corners…
Mat 23:5 All their deeds are done for men to see.…
Mrk 6:56 And wherever He went—villages and towns and countrysides…

so that you may remember all the commandments of the LORD,

Israel’s faithfulness depended on keeping God’s commands before them. The tassels directed their attention away from forgetfulness and toward the revealed will of God.

Psa 103:18 those who keep His covenant and remember…
Deu 6:6-9 These words I am commanding you today are to be…
Jos 1:8 This Book of the Law must not depart from your mouth;…

that you may obey them

Remembering God’s commands was meant to lead to faithful action. Israel was called not merely to know the law but to order its life according to it.

Deu 5:33 You must walk in all the ways that the LORD your God…
Jhn 14:15 If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.
1Sa 15:22 But Samuel declared: “Does the LORD delight in…

and not prostitute yourselves by following your own heart and your own eyes.

Pursuing personal desires apart from God’s commands was spiritual unfaithfulness. The image of prostitution reflects Israel’s tendency to turn from the LORD toward idolatry and sinful desires.

Ezk 6:9 Then in the nations to which they have been carried captive…
Pro 4:23 Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow…
1Jn 2:16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh…

Then you will remember and obey all My commandments,

Remembering God’s commands meant more than recalling them; it required Israel to live by them. The tassels commanded in the preceding verses served as a visible reminder of the covenant given through Moses. Israel’s obedience demonstrated loyalty to the Lord who had redeemed them and set them apart from the nations.

Deu 8:2 Remember that these forty years the LORD your God led you…
Deu 6:17 You are to diligently keep the commandments of the LORD…
Lev 22:31 You are to keep My commandments and practice them…

and you will be holy to your God.

God called Israel to belong exclusively to Him and to reflect His righteous character in worship, conduct, and community life. Their holiness rested on their covenant relationship with the Lord and was expressed through willing obedience to His commands.

Deu 7:6 For you are a people holy to the LORD your God.…
Lev 20:26 You are to be holy to Me because I, the LORD, am holy,…
Exo 19:6 And unto Me you shall be a kingdom of priests…

I am the LORD your God

The God who gave Israel these commands was not distant or unknown. He had bound Himself to the nation in covenant and claimed their worship, obedience, and loyalty.

Lev 18:2 Speak to the Israelites and tell them: I am the LORD…
Lev 19:4 Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves molten gods.…
Lev 11:44 For I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves…

who brought you out of the land of Egypt

Israel’s freedom from slavery came by God’s power through the Exodus. Their history as a redeemed people formed the foundation for their calling to live differently from the nations around them.

Exo 20:2 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Deu 5:6 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out…
Psa 81:10 I am the LORD your God, who brought you up out of Egypt.…

to be your God.

Deliverance had a purpose beyond rescue from Egypt: Israel was to belong to the Lord as His covenant people. He would dwell among them, guide them, and provide for them as they walked in His commands.

Exo 6:7 I will take you as My own people, and I will be your God.…
Lev 26:12 I will walk among you and be your God,…
Ezk 36:28 Then you will live in the land that I gave your forefathers;…

I am the LORD your God.”

The closing declaration confirms God’s authority over every instruction in the chapter. Israel’s identity, worship, and conduct were to reflect the God who had redeemed them.

Lev 18:4 You are to practice My judgments and keep My statutes…
Lev 19:3 Each of you must respect his mother and father,…
Lev 20:7 Consecrate yourselves, therefore, and be holy,…
