Berean Study Bible God’s Judgment on the EarthYahweh announces judgment upon the whole world. His authority extends over every nation, and no land or people stand beyond His rule. Zep 1:2-3 “I will completely sweep away everything,” declares the LORD.… and leaves it in ruins. The devastation is total, leaving the ordered world desolate under God’s judgment for human sin and rebellion. Ezk 33:28 I will make the land a desolate waste, and the pride… He will twist its surface The earth itself will be shaken and altered, showing that creation is subject to its Creator and can become an instrument of His judgment. Isa 29:16 Shall what is formed say to him who formed it… and scatter its inhabitants— Peoples will be driven from their homes and communities, a judgment that brings disorder, loss, and separation among the nations. Deu 28:64 Then the LORD will scatter you among all the nations,… people and priest alike, God’s coming judgment will reach the entire nation, including those entrusted with religious service. Priestly office will not protect anyone who shares in the people’s rebellion. Hos 4:9 And it shall be like people, like priest.… servant and master, Social rank and authority will offer no refuge when the Lord judges the land. Those with power and those under their power will face the same calamity. Mal 1:6 A son honors his father, and a servant his master.… maid and mistress, Women of differing household positions will likewise be swept into the judgment. Domestic hierarchy will disappear before God’s rule over all. Pro 30:23 an unloved woman who marries, and a maidservant… buyer and seller, Ordinary commerce will not continue as usual under the devastation Isaiah describes. Wealth gained through trade will not secure anyone’s safety. Ezk 7:12 The time has come; the day has arrived… lender and borrower, Financial dependence and advantage will become meaningless when God brings down the structures of society. Neither debt nor possessions can alter His judgment. Pro 22:7 The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower… creditor and debtor. Those who hold claims over others and those obligated to pay them will stand on equal ground. God will judge without regard to religious office, social standing, gender, or economic position. Luk 7:41-42 Two men were debtors to a certain moneylender.… The earth will be utterly laid waste God’s judgment reaches beyond a single city or nation, bringing widespread devastation upon a world marked by rebellion against Him. Zep 1:2-3 “I will completely sweep away everything,” declares the LORD.… and thoroughly plundered. Its wealth, security, and abundance will be removed, leaving the proud and powerful unable to preserve what they trusted. Ezk 7:21 And I will hand these things over as plunder to foreigners… For the LORD has spoken this word. The coming judgment is certain because it proceeds from God’s sovereign decree. Isa 46:11 I summon a bird of prey from the east, a man for My purpose… The earth mourns and withers; God’s judgment reaches beyond individuals to the land itself. Human rebellion has brought disorder and ruin into the created world, and the earth bears the consequences of the sins committed upon it. Jer 12:4 How long will the land mourn and the grass… the world languishes and fades; The inhabited world declines under the weight of widespread corruption. Nations, cities, and their achievements cannot endure when they reject God’s authority and persist in evil. Isa 33:9 The land mourns and languishes; Lebanon is ashamed… the exalted of the earth waste away. Kings, nobles, and the powerful are not exempt from judgment. Those who trust in status, wealth, or strength are brought low, showing that no human position can stand against the righteous rule of God. Isa 40:23-24 He brings the princes to nothing and makes the rulers… The earth is defiled by its people; Human sin has corrupted the world God created good. Rebellion against God brings consequences beyond individuals and nations, affecting the land and the created order itself. The judgment described in this chapter reaches the whole earth because humanity as a whole has turned from God’s rule. Lev 18:25-28 Even the land has become defiled, so I am punishing it… they have transgressed the laws; God has given moral boundaries for human life in his commandments, including the Mosaic Law, and people have willfully violated them. Their disobedience is not ignorance but rejection of the authority and righteousness of God. Dan 9:11 All Israel has transgressed Your law and turned away,… they have overstepped the decrees Rather than remaining within the limits God established, mankind has crossed them in deliberate defiance, overstepping His decrees—divine ordinances meant to govern human behavior. The order God intended for worship, justice, family, and society has been disregarded. Ezk 5:6-7 But she has rebelled against My ordinances… and broken the everlasting covenant. Humanity has violated the everlasting covenant God established with the human race, including His promises and obligations toward His people. Their unfaithfulness brings the worldwide judgment Isaiah foretells, while also showing the need for the redemption and restoration God would ultimately provide. Jer 11:10 They have returned to the sins of their forefathers… Therefore a curse has consumed the earth, God’s judgment falls on a world defiled by human rebellion against His covenant and commands. As the ground was cursed after Adam’s sin, the effects of sin now reach throughout the inhabited earth. Zec 5:3-4 Then he told me, “This is the curse that is going out… and its inhabitants must bear the guilt; The people of the earth are accountable for their transgression. Their guilt is not merely collective; each generation and individual shares responsibility for rejecting God’s law. Lev 5:17 If someone sins and violates any of the LORD’s commandments… the earth’s dwellers have been burned, The burning portrays the devastating force of divine judgment, consuming what human sin has corrupted and leaving the land desolate. Zep 1:18 Neither their silver nor their gold will be able… and only a few survive. Though judgment is widespread, God preserves a remnant. Their survival demonstrates both the severity of His justice and His continued purpose to maintain a people through whom His promises endure. Isa 10:20-22 On that day the remnant of Israel and the survivors… The new wine dries up, God’s judgment reaches the ordinary blessings of the land. Wine, a source of daily provision and celebration in Israel, becomes scarce as the nation faces the consequences of rebellion. Jol 1:10 The field is ruined; the land mourns… the vine withers. The failing vineyard pictures a land stripped of fruitfulness and a people who have not produced the faithfulness God required. Jol 1:12 The grapevine is dried up, and the fig tree is withered;… All the merrymakers now groan. Songs, feasts, and public celebrations give way to grief. The joy once associated with harvest and abundance is silenced as judgment brings loss throughout the community. Jer 16:9 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says:… The joyful tambourines have ceased; Judgment brings an end to the music that had accompanied Israel’s celebrations, feasts, and public gatherings. What was once marked by rejoicing is replaced by grief and desolation. Jer 7:34 I will remove from the cities of Judah and the streets… the noise of revelers has stopped; The sounds of feasting and carefree indulgence are silenced as normal life is interrupted by God’s righteous judgment. Jer 16:9 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says:… the joyful harp is silent. Instruments associated with celebration and worship no longer sound, emphasizing the total removal of joy from a land brought low by rebellion. Ezk 26:13 So I will silence the sound of your songs,… They no longer sing and drink wine; God’s judgment brings an end to the ordinary joys of life. Songs, feasts, and wine had marked times of celebration and prosperity, but the devastation described in Isaiah 24 leaves no occasion for rejoicing. The land’s inhabitants experience mourning as the blessings they enjoyed are removed. Isa 16:10 Joy and gladness are removed from the orchard… strong drink is bitter to those who consume it. What once offered pleasure and relief no longer satisfies. In the midst of ruin and fear, even drink becomes bitter, reflecting the sorrow and consequences that accompany rebellion against God. Earthly comforts cannot overcome the weight of divine judgment. Pro 31:6-7 Give strong drink to one who is perishing,… The city of chaos is shattered; God’s judgment reduces a thriving center of human pride and rebellion to ruin. Order, security, and prosperity collapse as the consequences of sin fall upon the nations. Isa 25:2 Indeed, You have made the city a heap of rubble… every house is closed to entry. The emptied, barred homes portray fear, isolation, and the end of ordinary community life. No place remains secure when God brings judgment upon a world that has rejected Him. Isa 26:20 Go, my people, enter your rooms and shut your doors… In the streets they cry out for wine. The loss of wine reveals the collapse of ordinary life, harvest, and celebration under God’s judgment. Public places once marked by trade and fellowship are filled with distress as the land’s abundance is removed. Jol 1:5-7 Wake up, you drunkards, and weep; wail, all you drinkers… All joy turns to gloom; Gladness gives way to grief as the people face the consequences of rebellion. The darkness is both outward, in the ruin of the land, and inward, in the loss of hope and security. Lam 5:15 Joy has left our hearts; our dancing has turned to mourning. rejoicing is exiled from the land. Joy is pictured as driven away from a land no longer enjoying God’s blessing. The desolation anticipates the need for restoration, which God ultimately provides through His promised King. Jer 25:10 Moreover, I will banish from them the sounds of joy… The city is left in ruins; Isaiah portrays a world brought low under God’s judgment. The ruined city represents human society organized apart from Him, with its power, wealth, and security stripped away. Nations that had trusted in their own strength, like Jerusalem and Babylon in their times of rebellion, stood as reminders that no city or kingdom is beyond divine judgment. Isa 25:2 Indeed, You have made the city a heap of rubble… its gate is reduced to rubble. City gates were centers of defense, government, commerce, and public justice. Their destruction meant that protection, leadership, and order had collapsed. Nothing remained of the structures on which the city depended, revealing the failure of human strength to withstand the Lord’s judgment. Lam 2:9 Her gates have sunk into the ground; He has destroyed… So will it be on the earth and among the nations, God’s judgment reaches beyond Judah to the whole inhabited world. The devastation described in Isaiah 24 includes all nations under God’s rule, showing that no people or land stands outside His authority. Jer 25:31 The tumult will resound to the ends of the earth… like a harvested olive tree, An olive tree after beating and gathering would retain only a few scattered olives on its upper branches. The picture emphasizes how few will remain when judgment has passed, yet it also allows for a preserved remnant. Isa 17:6 Yet gleanings will remain, like an olive tree… like a gleaning after a grape harvest. After the main grape harvest, only a small amount of fruit remained for gleaners. In the same way, widespread judgment will leave only a few survivors. Their preservation reflects God’s continued purpose amid destruction. Mic 7:1 Woe is me! For I am like one gathering summer fruit… They raise their voices, The survivors of God’s worldwide judgment raise their voices in public praise. Though the earth has been devastated by rebellion and judgment, a remnant remains to acknowledge the Lord’s sovereign rule. Isa 42:11 Let the desert and its cities raise their voices;… they shout for joy; They shout for joy because they are certain that God has not abandoned His purposes. Though judgment exposes human pride, it also prepares the way for the righteous to rejoice in His deliverance. Psa 98:4 Make a joyful noise to the LORD, all the earth;… from the west The phrase “from the west” indicates that praise will rise from distant coastlands and nations beyond Israel, showing that the Lord’s glory will be recognized throughout the earth. Isa 59:19 So shall they fear the name of the LORD where the sun sets… they proclaim the majesty of the LORD. His power, holiness, and authority stand above every nation and human ruler. Even amid judgment, His reign is declared by those who belong to Him. Psa 145:5-6 The glorious splendor of Your majesty. And I will… Therefore glorify the LORD in the east. After announcing judgment upon the earth, Isaiah looks ahead to a remnant who will honor the LORD even from lands east of Israel. God’s judgments do not end His purpose for the nations; they reveal His holiness and bring His name to wider recognition. Ezk 43:2 I saw the glory of the God of Israel coming from the east.… Extol the name of the LORD, The remnant is called to publicly extol, or praise enthusiastically, the LORD for who He is—Israel’s holy, righteous, and sovereign God. His name stands for His revealed character, authority, and reputation over all peoples. Psa 145:1-2 A Psalm of praise. Of David. I will exalt You,… the God of Israel Though the LORD made Himself known through His covenant with Israel, He is not a tribal deity limited to one land. The God who judged Israel and the nations remains faithful to His promises and rules over all the earth. Psa 72:18-19 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, … in the islands of the sea. The distant coastlands and islands represent peoples far beyond Israel’s borders. Isaiah anticipates the day when those separated by geography, language, and culture will also recognize the LORD’s glory. Isa 42:10 Sing to the LORD a new song—His praise… From the ends of the earth we hear singing: Even amid worldwide judgment, a remnant from distant lands gives honor to God. The song anticipates the day when His rule and righteousness are openly acknowledged among the nations. Isa 42:10 Sing to the LORD a new song—His praise… “Glory to the Righteous One.” God alone is worthy of this praise because His judgments are just and His holiness is absolute. The worship rising from the earth stands in contrast to the rebellion and corruption being judged. 1Jn 2:1 My little children, I am writing these things to you…… But I said, “I am wasting away! I am wasting away! Woe is me.” Isaiah is overwhelmed by the devastation and human sin surrounding him. The promise of future praise does not lessen the horror of present judgment or the grief of witnessing unfaithfulness. Isa 6:5 Then I said: “Woe is me, for I am ruined,… The treacherous betray; the treacherous deal in treachery. Betrayal and deception continue even as God’s judgment approaches. Human rebellion remains deeply rooted, showing the need for God to act in judgment and ultimately establish righteousness. Psa 55:20-21 My companion attacks his friends; he violates his covenant.… Terror and pit and snare “Terror and pit and snare” portray a sequence of unavoidable calamities. Fear drives people into flight, the pit brings ruin, and the snare catches those who think they have escaped. The imagery presents God’s judgment as inescapable for those living in rebellion against him. Jer 48:43-44 Terror and pit and snare await you, O dweller of Moab… await you, “Await you” declares that the coming disaster is certain. Isaiah’s warning was not a distant possibility but a fixed judgment approaching a sinful world. Deu 32:35 Vengeance is Mine; I will repay. In due time… O dweller of the earth. “O dweller of the earth” extends the warning beyond Judah to all nations. The judgment reaches the whole inhabited world, exposing humanity’s shared guilt and affirming God’s rule over all peoples. Rev 8:13 And as I observed, I heard an eagle flying overhead… Whoever flees the sound of panic Whoever flees the sound of panic will not escape the terror accompanying the Lord’s judgment on the earth. Pro 28:1 The wicked flee when no one pursues, but the righteous… will fall into the pit, Those who seek to escape the calamity will fall into the pit of destruction. Pro 26:27 He who digs a pit will fall into it and he who rolls a stone… and whoever climbs from the pit Those who escape one danger may seem to find relief, but they will encounter another. The one who climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare, emphasizing the inescapability of God’s judgment. Psa 40:2 He lifted me up from the pit of despair,… will be caught in the snare. Every route of escape leads into another form of judgment. Job 18:9-10 A trap seizes his heel; a snare grips him.… For the windows of heaven are open, “The windows of heaven are open” signifies God’s judgment being poured out from above, as in the days of the flood. Gen 7:11 In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, … and the foundations of the earth are shaken. The upheaval is universal, reaching heaven and earth alike as God judges the nations. Psa 82:5 They do not know or understand; they wander in the darkness;… The earth is utterly broken apart, God’s judgment brings devastation on a global scale, undoing the stability and order humanity has taken for granted. The created world, corrupted by human sin, cannot escape the consequences of rebellion against its Creator. Rev 16:18-19 And there were flashes of lightning, rumblings,… the earth is split open, The land itself is pictured as rupturing under divine judgment. Such upheaval recalls occasions when God used the earth to expose and punish rebellion, showing that no earthly power or refuge can withstand Him. Num 16:31-32 As soon as Moses had finished saying all this,… the earth is shaken violently. Earthquakes and cosmic disturbance portray the direct intervention of God in history. What seems permanent is shaken, while God alone remains sovereign over creation and the nations. Hag 2:6-7 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Once more… The earth staggers like a drunkard Under God’s judgment, the world’s established order collapses. What appears secure becomes unstable as the consequences of human sin affect all creation. Psa 75:3 When the earth and all its dwellers quake,… and sways like a shack. Earthly strength, kingdoms, and institutions prove as fragile as a temporary shelter before the power of God. Nothing built in rebellion can stand when He acts in judgment. Isa 1:8 And the Daughter of Zion is abandoned like a shelter… Earth’s rebellion weighs it down, Humanity’s persistent defiance has brought guilt upon the earth. Creation bears the effects of sin and awaits God’s final restoration. Psa 38:4 For my iniquities have overwhelmed me;… and it falls, never to rise again. The present sinful order will come to an end under God’s righteous judgment. Its fall prepares the way for the new heaven and new earth God has promised. Amo 5:2 Fallen is Virgin Israel, never to rise again.… In that day Isaiah looks ahead to the Lord’s appointed time of judgment, when His rule will be openly displayed over all rebellion. Jol 3:18 And in that day the mountains will drip with sweet wine… the LORD will punish God’s judgment is deliberate and just, directed against those who have opposed His authority. Isa 13:11 I will punish the world for its evil and the wicked… the host of heaven above The judgment reaches the rebellious spiritual powers behind human evil, showing that earthly corruption is connected to a wider conflict against God. Deu 4:19 When you look to the heavens and see the sun and moon… and the kings of the earth below. Earthly rulers who exalt themselves, oppress others, or defy the Lord will also answer to Him. No power in heaven or on earth stands beyond His authority. Psa 2:2-4 The kings of the earth take their stand… They will be gathered together like prisoners in a pit. The rebels among earthly rulers and nations will be assembled under God’s judgment, stripped of power and unable to resist. Pits and cisterns were used as places of confinement, conveying disgrace, helplessness, and the certainty of captivity. Zec 9:11 As for you, because of the blood of My covenant,… They will be confined to a dungeon Their imprisonment portrays exclusion from freedom, light, and influence. God’s judgment reaches both the spiritual powers behind rebellion and the human authorities who exalt themselves against Him. Isa 42:7 to open the eyes of the blind, to bring prisoners out… and punished after many days. The delay does not cancel judgment. God appoints the time when the imprisoned rebels will be called to account, bringing His righteous rule fully over all opposition. 2Pe 2:9 if all this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue… The moon will be confounded and the sun will be ashamed; Even the brightest lights of creation will pale before the unveiled glory of God. The imagery portrays a real, world-shaking display of divine judgment and kingship, in which all created powers are shown to be subject to their Creator. Isa 60:19-20 No longer will the sun be your light by day,… for the LORD of Hosts will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem, The LORD will establish His visible rule from Jerusalem, the city He chose as the center of Israel’s worship and kingship. The LORD of Hosts commands the armies of heaven and rules over every earthly authority. Mic 4:7 And I will make the lame into a remnant, the outcast,… and before His elders with great glory. The elders represent honored leaders gathered in the presence of the King. They will witness the splendor of His reign as He receives the glory that no earthly ruler, nation, or heavenly body can rival. Exo 24:9-11 Then Moses went up with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu,… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
