Berean Study Bible Temple Destruction and Other SignsHe departed after confronting Israel’s religious leaders and warning of coming judgment. The temple had been greatly enlarged by Herod the Great and stood at the center of Jewish worship and national life. His departure anticipated the judgment He would soon pronounce on the sanctuary. Mat 24:1 As Jesus left the temple and was walking away,… one of His disciples said to Him, The unnamed disciple spoke with the admiration shared by many who saw the temple as a lasting sign of God’s favor and Israel’s security. Mat 17:4 Peter said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here… “Teacher, look at the magnificent stones and buildings!” Herod’s temple complex was renowned for its enormous dressed stones, costly adornments, and impressive courts. The disciple’s attention to its grandeur prompted Jesus’ prophecy that the buildings would be torn down, fulfilled when the Romans destroyed Jerusalem and the temple in AD 70. Luk 21:5 As some of the disciples were remarking… “Do you see all these great buildings?” As Jesus and His disciples left the temple courts, they looked upon a vast complex enlarged by Herod the Great. Its massive stones, white limestone, gold ornamentation, and elevated position made it one of Jerusalem’s greatest landmarks and the center of Israel’s worship. The disciples’ admiration of the temple’s grandeur prompted Jesus to reveal its coming fate. Luk 21:5 As some of the disciples were remarking… Jesus replied. Jesus answered their amazement with a solemn declaration of judgment. Though the temple appeared permanent and secure, its destruction would show that outward religious splendor could not preserve a nation that rejected God’s Messiah. Jhn 2:19 Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days”… “Not one stone here will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” Jesus foretold the destruction of Jerusalem and the temple, fulfilled in A.D. 70 when Roman armies under Titus captured the city after a long siege. The temple was burned and dismantled, bringing an end to its sacrifices and priestly service. Its fall marked God’s judgment on Jerusalem and confirmed Jesus’ authority as the One who knew what lay ahead. Luk 19:44 They will level you to the ground—you and the children… While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, The Mount of Olives stood east of Jerusalem, overlooking the temple complex across the Kidron Valley. Jesus often withdrew there for prayer and instruction. From this vantage point, the temple’s splendor and apparent permanence would have been plainly visible as He spoke of its coming destruction and the events surrounding the end of the age. Mat 24:3 While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, … Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked Him privately, Peter, James, and John belonged to Jesus’ closest circle and had witnessed events not seen by the other disciples. Andrew, Peter’s brother and one of the first disciples called, was also present. Their private question reflects the seriousness with which they received Jesus’ warning and their desire to understand what lay ahead. Mat 4:18-22 As Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee,… “Tell us, when will these things happen? The disciples ask when Jesus’ prediction of the Temple’s destruction will occur. The Temple stood at the center of Israel’s worship and national life, so its fall would signal a devastating judgment. Jesus’ words were fulfilled in AD 70, when Roman forces captured Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple. Luk 21:7 “Teacher,” they asked, “when will these things happen?… And what will be the sign that they are about to be fulfilled?” They also ask for the warning signs that would show these events were near. Jesus answers by describing deception, conflict, persecution, the siege of Jerusalem, and the coming judgment, giving both immediate instruction for His disciples and a broader picture of events leading toward His return. Luk 21:8-11 Jesus answered, “See to it that you are not deceived…”… Jesus began by telling them, Seated on the Mount of Olives with Peter, James, John, and Andrew, Jesus began His private answer to their questions about the temple’s destruction and the events connected with His coming and the end of the age. His first concern was not political upheaval or natural disaster, but spiritual danger. Mat 24:4 Jesus answered, “See to it that no one deceives you. “See to it that no one deceives you. Many would claim authority in God’s name and seek to mislead people about the Messiah and the time of the end. Jesus instructed His disciples to remain alert and to judge such claims by the truth He had revealed. 2Co 11:3 I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived… Many will come in My name, Jesus warned that impostors would arise claiming His authority and presenting themselves as His representatives. In periods of political unrest and spiritual uncertainty, such figures often gained followers by promising deliverance or special revelation. Mat 24:5 For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’… claiming, ‘I am He,’ Some would openly identify themselves as the Messiah, attempting to take for themselves the position that belongs to Christ alone. Jewish expectations of a deliverer made such claims especially persuasive in the years leading to Jerusalem’s destruction. Mat 24:23-26 At that time, if anyone says to you, ‘Look,… and will deceive many. Their success would not make their claims true; many would be led astray because they sought security and rescue apart from God’s revealed truth. 2Th 2:9-12 The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied… When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, Jesus warned of conflicts and reports of impending conflicts that would unsettle the nations. Such turmoil would characterize the period before Jerusalem’s destruction and would continue throughout the present age. Mat 24:6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars,… do not be alarmed. His disciples were not to interpret every crisis as the immediate arrival of the end or allow fear to govern them. Jhn 14:27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.… These things must happen, War is part of a fallen world and unfolds under God’s sovereign purpose. These events would precede the greater judgments Jesus described. Rev 1:1 This is the revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave Him… but the end is still to come. Conflict alone would not mark the final consummation. Further signs and events would occur before Christ’s return and the completion of God’s kingdom. 2Th 2:2-3 not to be easily disconcerted or alarmed… Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. Widespread war would mark the troubled course of the age. Israel’s revolt against Rome and the wars that shook the empire in the first century illustrated such turmoil, yet the pattern extends beyond that generation as nations continue to contend for power. Human rebellion against God produces violence, division, and instability. Mat 24:7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom… There will be earthquakes in various places, as well as famines. Earthquakes and food shortages were known in the ancient world and occurred in the first century, including famines during the reign of Claudius. Such disasters reveal the frailty of a fallen creation and the limits of human security. They also show that history remains under God’s sovereign rule. Luk 21:11 There will be great earthquakes, famines, and pestilences… These are the beginning of birth pains. These events are not the final consummation but the onset of distress preceding Christ’s return and the full arrival of His kingdom. Like labor before birth, increasing trouble points beyond present suffering to the restoration God will bring. Mat 24:8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.
Witnessing to All NationsJesus warns His disciples to remain watchful because opposition will come from both religious and civil authorities. Act 20:31 Therefore be alert and remember that for three years… You will be delivered over to the councils Jewish local courts and the Sanhedrin exercised religious and legal authority, and followers of Jesus would be accused before them for proclaiming Him as Messiah. Mat 10:17 But beware of men, for they will hand you over… and beaten in the synagogues. Synagogues also served as places of community discipline, where flogging could be imposed for offenses against Jewish law. Mat 23:34 Because of this, I am sending you prophets and wise men… On My account you will stand before governors and kings The persecution would extend beyond Judea as believers came before Roman officials and rulers. Mat 10:18 On My account you will be brought before governors and kings… as witnesses to them. Their trials would provide opportunities to testify plainly concerning Jesus and His kingdom before those in power. Luk 24:48 You are witnesses of these things. And the gospel The gospel centers on Jesus Christ—His coming, death, resurrection, and saving reign. In Mark 13:10, Jesus declares that the gospel must first be preached to all nations. Mat 4:23 Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues,… must first be proclaimed Before the end comes, the gospel must first be proclaimed to all nations. This establishes the worldwide mission Jesus entrusted to His followers. Mat 24:14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached… to all the nations. God’s saving purpose extends beyond Israel to every people group, preparing for the gathering of believers from throughout the earth. Mat 28:19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,… But when they arrest you and hand you over, Jesus warns that His disciples will face real hostility from Jewish and Gentile authorities as they bear witness to Him. Luk 21:12 But before all this, they will seize you and persecute you.… do not worry beforehand what to say. They are not to be consumed with fear or rely on carefully prepared self-defense when brought before rulers and courts. Mat 10:19 But when they hand you over, do not worry… Instead, speak whatever you are given at that time, God will provide the words needed for their testimony in the moment of trial. Luk 21:15 For I will give you speech and wisdom… for it will not be you speaking, but the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will empower Christ’s servants to speak faithfully, as He did when the apostles testified boldly before the Sanhedrin. Mat 10:20 For it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit… Brother will betray brother to death, Persecution will reach into the closest human relationships, overturning the loyalty normally expected within a household. Confession of Christ will expose believers to denunciation not only from rulers and public opponents but also from relatives who reject the gospel. Mat 10:21 Brother will betray brother to death, and a father… and a father his child. Such treachery reveals the extent of the coming hostility. In a society where the father held central authority within the family, a parent delivering over his own child represented a profound collapse of natural affection and duty. Gen 22:2 “Take your son,” God said, “your only son Isaac”… Children will rise against their parents The division will move in both directions. Children will reject parental authority and join in opposition to faithful parents, showing how deeply rebellion against God can corrupt the family. Mat 10:35-36 For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father,… and have them put to death. Some believers will be handed over to civil or religious authorities and executed. Jesus prepares His disciples for real suffering, including martyrdom, while calling them to remain faithful when allegiance to Him brings conflict even within their own homes. Deu 13:9-10 Instead, you must surely kill him. Your hand must be… You will be hated by everyone because of My name, Jesus warned that allegiance to Him would bring opposition from religious authorities, political powers, and unbelieving society. The early church experienced this hostility from both Jewish and Roman leaders because believers confessed Jesus as the Christ and refused to deny Him. Mat 10:22 You will be hated by everyone because of My name,… but the one who perseveres to the end True disciples remain faithful through persecution, deception, and tribulation. Such endurance depends on God’s sustaining grace and continues until death or Christ’s return. Mat 24:13 But the one who perseveres to the end will be saved. will be saved. Those who remain in Christ will receive final deliverance and redemption when God completes His saving work. 1Pe 1:9 now that you are receiving the goal of your faith…
The Abomination of DesolationDaniel foretold a sacrilegious desecration connected with Jerusalem and the temple. Antiochus IV Epiphanes foreshadowed it in 167 BC by profaning the temple and offering pagan sacrifice. Jesus warned of a later fulfillment involving Jerusalem’s destruction and the coming judgment. Dan 9:27 And he will confirm a covenant with many…… standing where it should not be What is holy is invaded and defiled by what opposes God. During the Roman siege in AD 70, Jerusalem and the temple fell to the Roman armies, bringing devastating judgment upon the city. Mat 24:15 So when you see standing in the holy place… (let the reader understand), Mark calls believers to recognize the seriousness of Jesus’ warning and to respond with discernment when the foretold events appear. Dan 12:10 Many will be purified, made spotless, and refined… then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Those living near Jerusalem were to leave without delay rather than remain for the siege. Early Christians fled from the region, finding refuge in Pella across the Jordan before the city’s destruction. Luk 21:21 Then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains,… Let no one on the housetop Flat-roofed homes in Jerusalem provided outdoor space for work, rest, and prayer. When the danger came, anyone on the roof was to leave immediately by the exterior stairs rather than reenter the house. Mat 24:17 Let no one on the housetop come down to retrieve… go back inside The coming devastation would unfold with such speed that delay could prove fatal. Jesus warned His disciples to flee at once when the appointed signs appeared. Gen 19:17 As soon as the men had brought them out, one of them said,… to retrieve anything from his house. Possessions would offer no protection during Jerusalem’s destruction. Escape from the city mattered more than preserving property. Mat 24:18 And let no one in the field return for his cloak. And let no one in the field Those working outside the city were not to return home when the danger came. Jesus warned that the flight from Judea would require immediate action, with no opportunity to gather family belongings or make preparations. Luk 17:31 On that day, let no one on the housetop come down… return for his cloak. Even an outer garment needed for warmth was to be left behind. The approaching judgment would be so sudden and severe that preserving life mattered more than recovering possessions. Mat 24:18 And let no one in the field return for his cloak. How miserable those days will be Jesus warns of the severe distress surrounding Jerusalem’s destruction and the tribulation to come. The crisis will bring fear, violence, famine, and urgent flight, leaving little time to prepare or escape. Luk 21:23 How miserable those days will be for pregnant and nursing… for pregnant and nursing mothers! Mothers carrying or caring for infants would face exceptional hardship during a sudden evacuation. Their physical limitations and the needs of young children would make travel, shelter, and survival far more difficult amid the chaos. Mat 24:19 How miserable those days will be for pregnant and nursing… Pray Jesus commands His disciples to seek God’s mercy as they face the coming crisis. Prayer expresses dependence on God for protection, wisdom, and strength during fearful circumstances. Luk 18:1 Then Jesus told them a parable about their need to pray… that this will not occur He refers to the urgent flight required when Jerusalem would be surrounded and judged. The destruction of the city by Rome in AD 70 brought immense suffering, confirming the seriousness of His warning. Luk 21:36 So keep watch at all times, and pray that you may… in the winter. Cold weather, rain, swollen streams, and difficult travel would make escape more dangerous, especially for families and the vulnerable. Jesus’ concern reflects the severe conditions His followers would face. Mat 24:20 Pray that your flight will not occur in the winter… For those will be days of tribulation Jerusalem’s fall in AD 70 brought siege, famine, violence, and the destruction of the temple under the Roman armies. Jesus warned of a judgment that would devastate the nation and bring severe suffering upon its inhabitants. Dan 12:1 At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch… unseen from the beginning of God’s creation The calamity would stand apart in its scale and horror, reaching beyond earlier national disasters. The destruction of the city and temple marked a decisive judgment within God’s purposes for Israel. Mat 24:21 For at that time there will be great tribulation,… until now, The warning spoke to events still ahead for Jesus’ disciples and the generation that would witness them. Believers were to recognize the signs and escape rather than remain in the city. Exo 9:18 Behold, at this time tomorrow I will rain down… and never to be seen again. The judgment was singular and final in its character. Jerusalem would suffer devastation unlike its former afflictions, while God’s redemptive plan would continue through Christ and His people. Ezk 26:21 I will make you an object of horror, and you will be no more… If the Lord had not cut short those days, If the Lord had not cut short those days, no human life would survive. God sovereignly limits this unparalleled period of tribulation so that the elect may be preserved. Mat 24:22 If those days had not been cut short, nobody would be saved.… nobody would be saved. Without God’s restraint, the devastation would be total. Isa 1:9 Unless the LORD of Hosts had left us a few survivors,… But for the sake of the elect, God preserves those who belong to Him amid judgment and persecution. 2Ti 2:10 For this reason I endure all things for the elect… whom He has chosen, They are His people by His grace and purpose, and He will not abandon them. Eph 1:4-5 For He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world… He has cut them short. The days of tribulation have a divinely appointed limit, ensuring the survival of the elect and the fulfillment of God’s plan. Rom 9:28 For the Lord will carry out His sentence on the earth… At that time During the great tribulation, upheaval, fear, and widespread deception will create conditions in which false claims about the Messiah appear credible. Luk 21:8 Jesus answered, “See to it that you are not deceived…”… if anyone says to you, The warning includes every source of such claims, whether religious leaders, false prophets, or others claiming special knowledge. Deu 13:1-3 If a prophet or dreamer of dreams arises among you… ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ Some will present a supposed Messiah as physically present and worthy of allegiance. Mat 24:23 At that time, if anyone says to you, ‘Look,… or ‘There He is!’ These reports will be urgent and persuasive, seeking to draw people after counterfeit deliverers. Luk 17:23 People will tell you, ‘Look, there He is!’… do not believe it. Christ’s return will not require private announcements or hidden discoveries; His followers must reject every false claim. 1Jn 4:1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test… For false Christs and false prophets will appear Jesus warned that impostors would arise claiming to be the Messiah or claiming divine authority. Such deceivers appeared in the first century, and similar claims would continue throughout the church age. Mat 24:5 For many will come in My name, claiming, ‘I am the Christ,’… and perform signs and wonders Their works would seem persuasive and extraordinary, giving outward support to false claims. Miraculous displays alone do not establish that a teacher or message comes from God. 2Th 2:9 The coming of the lawless one will be accompanied… to deceive even the elect, if that were possible. The deception will be powerful enough to threaten even those who belong to God, yet the elect will ultimately be preserved by His power. The warning calls believers to remain watchful, grounded in Christ’s teaching rather than captivated by signs. Mat 24:24 For false Christs and false prophets will appear… So be on your guard; Jesus warns the disciples to remain alert because false messiahs and false prophets will arise before His return, displaying signs intended to mislead even the elect. They must measure every claim against the instruction He has given rather than being carried along by fear, spectacle, or public expectation. Luk 21:8 Jesus answered, “See to it that you are not deceived…”… I have told you everything in advance. Jesus has prepared His followers for the deception, tribulation, and coming events ahead. What unfolds will not be outside God’s purpose, and His prior warning gives the disciples grounds for discernment and confidence in His word. Jhn 14:29 And now I have told you before it happens,…
The Return of the Son of ManFollowing the severe period of persecution and distress, the world will face direct signs of God’s approaching judgment. The tribulation will test those who remain faithful amid widespread rebellion and suffering. Mat 24:29 Immediately after the tribulation of those days:… ‘The sun will be darkened, The normal order of creation will be disrupted as God intervenes openly in human history. The darkened sun signals the collapse of earthly security and the nearness of Christ’s return. Isa 13:10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations… and the moon will not give its light; The loss of the moon’s light intensifies the worldwide darkness. Even the heavenly bodies, established to govern day and night, will bear witness to God’s sovereign judgment and the transition to the coming kingdom. Isa 60:19 No longer will the sun be your light by day,… the stars will fall from the sky, At Christ’s return, the created order will undergo visible and catastrophic change. The falling stars portray real cosmic upheaval under God’s judgment, marking the end of the present age and the collapse of every power opposed to His rule. Isa 13:10 For the stars of heaven and their constellations… and the powers of the heavens will be shaken.’ The heavenly bodies and spiritual forces presently permitted to operate will be brought under direct divine judgment. Nothing in heaven or earth will remain untouched as Christ comes in power, removes the old order, and establishes His kingdom. Hag 2:6 For this is what the LORD of Hosts says: “Once more… At that time At that time, following the tribulation and cosmic disturbances Jesus has described, He will return publicly. Dan 12:1 At that time Michael, the great prince who stands watch… they will see Every person will witness an event that cannot be concealed or mistaken. Mat 24:30 At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear… the Son of Man Jesus returns as the exalted Messiah and rightful ruler, exercising the authority given to Him by the Father. Dan 7:13 In my vision in the night I continued to watch, and I saw… coming in the clouds He appears in divine majesty, as the King who has come to judge and gather His people. Luk 21:27 At that time they will see the Son of Man coming… with great power and glory. His return stands in contrast to His first coming in humility and confirms His final victory over all opposing powers. Mat 25:31 When the Son of Man comes in His glory,… And He will send out the angels At His return, the Son of Man will exercise divine authority over the angelic host. The angels will carry out His command as part of the final events surrounding His appearing. Mat 13:41 The Son of Man will send out His angels… to gather His elect The elect are all who belong to Christ, chosen by God and redeemed through faith. Their gathering marks the completion of their salvation and the public vindication of God’s people. Mat 24:31 And He will send out His angels with a loud trumpet call… from the four winds, Believers will be gathered from every direction and nation. None of Christ’s people will be overlooked, regardless of where they have been scattered. Rev 7:1 After this I saw four angels standing… from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven. The gathering extends across the whole created order, from the most distant places on earth to the farthest reaches of the heavens. Christ will unite all His people at the consummation of His kingdom. Deu 4:32 Indeed, ask now from one end of the heavens to the other…
The Lesson of the Fig TreeFig trees were familiar throughout Israel and provided a clear illustration from everyday life. Jesus directs His disciples to observe a natural sign that reliably points to what follows. Mat 24:32 Now learn this lesson from the fig tree:… As soon as its branches become tender and sprout leaves, After winter, the fig tree’s new growth signals that the season has changed. In the same way, the events Jesus had described would show that His warnings were moving toward fulfillment. Luk 21:30 When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves… you know that summer is near. The visible signs would confirm that the coming events were close. Jesus calls His disciples to recognize what God has revealed and to remain watchful as His purposes unfold. Mat 24:33 So also, when you see all these things, you will know… So also, when you see these things happening, The wars, disasters, deception, persecution, and desolation Jesus described would confirm that His prophetic warnings were unfolding. The destruction of Jerusalem and the temple in AD 70 demonstrated the certainty of His words, while the larger pattern of tribulation points toward the completion of God’s purposes. Mat 24:33 So also, when you see all these things, you will know… know that He is near, The signs are not random events but indicators that Christ’s return and the fulfillment of His kingdom are drawing near. His people are to recognize God’s faithfulness to His promises and remain ready for the end He has appointed. Php 4:5 Let your gentleness be apparent to all. The Lord is near. right at the door. The image conveys nearness and certainty. Though the precise day and hour remain unknown, the arrival of the Son of Man is assured, and the events He foretold show that history is moving toward that decisive moment. Jas 5:9 Do not complain about one another, brothers… Truly I tell you, Jesus solemnly assures His disciples that what He has foretold will certainly occur. Mat 24:34 Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away… this generation The people then living would see Jerusalem and the temple destroyed, fulfilling His warning against the nation’s unbelief. Mat 23:36 Truly I tell you, all these things will come upon… will not pass away Their lifetime would not end before these events began to unfold. Mat 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words… until all these things have happened. The destruction of the temple in AD 70 confirmed Jesus’ words, while the fuller end-time signs await their final completion. Mat 24:33 So also, when you see all these things, you will know… Heaven and earth will pass away, The present created order is temporary and will give way to the new heaven and new earth God has promised. Even the most stable realities known to humanity will not endure unchanged. Mat 24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words… but My words will never pass away. Jesus’ teaching stands above creation itself. His promises, warnings, and revelation of God’s kingdom remain permanently true and will be fulfilled. Isa 40:8 The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word…
Readiness at Any HourThe timing of Christ’s return and the final judgment has not been disclosed to humanity. Jesus warns against speculation and places the focus on readiness. Mat 24:36 No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels… not even the angels in heaven, Heavenly angels serve God and carry out His commands, yet they have not been given this knowledge. The date remains within God’s sovereign purpose. 1Pe 1:12 It was revealed to them that they were not serving… nor the Son, During His earthly ministry, the Son willingly accepted the limitations of His incarnate mission and submitted to the Father’s appointed plan. His statement reflects His true humanity and His obedience to the Father. Luk 2:52 And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and… but only the Father. The Father alone has determined the time when history will reach its appointed conclusion. His authority governs the return of Christ, the judgment of the world, and the fulfillment of His kingdom. 1Co 8:6 Yet for us there is but one God, the Father… Be on your guard Jesus calls His disciples to remain watchful in light of the coming events He has described. They must not become complacent or distracted by ordinary concerns while awaiting the fulfillment of God’s purposes. 1Co 16:13 Be on the alert. Stand firm in the faith. Be men of courage.… and stay alert! Spiritual readiness requires continued attentiveness, prayer, and faithful obedience. Like servants responsible through the night, believers are to remain prepared for their master’s return. Mat 24:42 Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day… For you do not know The exact time of Christ’s return has not been revealed to human beings. That uncertainty guards against speculation and calls for steady faithfulness rather than delay. Mat 24:36 No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels… when the appointed time will come. God has set the time for the return of Christ and the completion of His plan. History moves toward that fixed moment, when the Son of Man will come in glory. Hab 2:3 For the vision awaits an appointed time;… It is like a man going on a journey Jesus portrays His departure after the resurrection and ascension, followed by His certain return. The interval calls for faithful service while the Master is absent. Mat 25:14 For it is just like a man going on a journey,… who left his house, The house pictures the household belonging to the master, entrusted to those who remain. Christ has committed the care of His people and the work of His kingdom to His servants. Mat 24:45 Who then is the faithful and wise servant,… put each servant in charge of his own task, Every servant receives a responsibility from the master. Believers are accountable to carry out the work assigned to them until Christ returns. Mat 25:15 To one he gave five talents, to another two talents… and instructed the doorkeeper to keep watch. The doorkeeper stands as a servant charged with vigilance on behalf of the household. The command reinforces the need for readiness, since the timing of the master’s return is unknown. Jhn 10:3 The gatekeeper opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen… Therefore keep watch, Jesus commands His disciples to remain alert for His return. Readiness involves faithful obedience and perseverance, since His coming will bring final judgment and the full establishment of His kingdom. Mat 25:13 Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day… because you do not know when the master of the house will return— The master represents Christ, whose return will be certain but unexpected. His followers are entrusted with responsibility during His absence and must be found faithful when He comes. Mat 24:43-44 But understand this: If the homeowner had known… whether in the evening, at midnight, when the rooster crows, or in the morning. These were the four Roman divisions of the night, covering every hour from sunset to dawn. The listing emphasizes that no period is exempt from watchfulness. The reference to the rooster’s crow also recalls the hour of Peter’s denial, underscoring the danger of spiritual carelessness. Luk 12:38 Even if he comes in the second or third watch of the night… Otherwise, he may arrive without notice Christ’s return will be sudden, at an hour unknown to His servants. Jesus warns that no one should presume upon delay or assume there will be time to prepare when He appears. Like a master returning from a journey, He expects His household to remain faithful in his absence. Luk 12:40 You also must be ready, because the Son of Man… and find you sleeping. Sleeping pictures spiritual negligence and failure to carry out the responsibilities entrusted to believers. Jesus calls His disciples to remain watchful, living in obedience and readiness until His return. Luk 22:46 “Why are you sleeping?” He asked. “Get up and pray…”… And what I say to you, Jesus first addresses the disciples gathered with Him on the Mount of Olives during His teaching about Jerusalem’s coming destruction, the temple, and His return. Mat 10:27 What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight;… I say to everyone: His warning extends beyond the disciples to all who follow Him in every generation. The events He described require readiness from all believers. Act 17:30 Although God overlooked the ignorance of earlier times,… Keep watch!” Christians are to remain spiritually alert, living in expectation of Christ’s return and not becoming careless or distracted by the concerns of the world. Mat 24:42 Therefore keep watch, because you do not know the day… This is a draft of the Berean Study Bible. Please send all comments and recommendations to bereanstudybible@aol.com. Bible Hub |
