Berean Study Bible Walking by the SpiritPaul draws the conclusion from humanity’s bondage to sin and the believer’s struggle against it: deliverance comes through Jesus Christ, not through the law. Rom 7:25 Thanks be to God, through Jesus Christ our Lord!… there is now With Christ’s saving work completed, believers live in a new standing before God. Eph 2:13 But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far away… no condemnation The guilt and penalty of sin have been removed for those justified by Christ’s death and resurrection. God does not pronounce condemnation—a legal declaration of guilt and punishment—against them because Christ bore the judgment sin deserved. Jhn 3:18 Whoever believes in Him is not condemned,… for those who are in Christ Jesus. Through faith, believers belong to Christ and are united with Him in His death and risen life. Their identity and security rest in Him rather than in their own ability to keep the law perfectly. Eph 2:6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with Him… For in Christ Jesus Believers are joined to Christ in His death and resurrection, receiving a new standing before God and a new identity no longer defined by Adam’s fall. 1Co 1:30 It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus… the law of the Spirit of life The Holy Spirit works as the governing power of the new covenant, imparting spiritual life and enabling what the Mosaic Law could reveal but could not produce in fallen humanity. 2Co 3:6 And He has qualified us as ministers of a new covenant,… set you free Christ’s saving work breaks sin’s dominion. This freedom is not independence from God, but release from condemnation and bondage so that believers may live under the Spirit’s direction. Jhn 8:36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. from the law of sin and death. Sin brought death into the world through Adam’s disobedience, and the law exposed sin without removing its power. Through Christ, the sentence of death is overcome and eternal life is secured. Rom 7:23 But I see another law at work in my body, warring against… For what the law was powerless to do The law revealed God’s righteous standard and exposed human sin, but it could not justify sinners or transform the heart. Its commands could identify guilt, yet they could not provide the righteousness humanity needed. Heb 7:18-19 So the former commandment is set aside because it was weak… in that it was weakened by the flesh, Human nature, corrupted by sin, could not fulfill the law’s demands. The failure lay not in the law itself, which was holy and good, but in people who lacked the power to obey it perfectly. Rom 7:18-19 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh…… God did by sending His own Son God accomplished what the law could not through Jesus Christ. The Father sent the eternal Son into the world to carry out His plan of redemption. Gal 4:4-5 But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son,… in the likeness of sinful man, Jesus truly became man, sharing human nature and living among sinners, yet He remained without sin. He was fully qualified to represent humanity before God. Php 2:7-8 but emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant… as an offering for sin. Christ gave Himself in sacrifice, bearing the judgment sin deserved. His death fulfilled the sacrificial purpose established under the old covenant and secured atonement for those who belong to Him. Isa 53:10 Yet it was the LORD’s will to crush Him… He thus condemned sin in the flesh, In the flesh of Christ, sin was judged and its claim against believers was answered. Through His death, sin’s penalty was borne, and through His resurrection, its dominion was broken. Col 2:14-15 having canceled the debt ascribed to us in the decrees… so that the righteous standard of the law might be fulfilled in us, God’s law reveals His holy character and righteous will, yet sinful humanity cannot satisfy its demands. Christ bore sin’s condemnation, and through union with Him believers are brought into the righteous life the law required. The law’s purpose is fulfilled as God’s people are changed by His grace rather than relying on works for justification. Rom 13:10 Love does no wrong to its neighbor. Therefore love is… who do not walk according to the flesh The flesh describes fallen human nature in rebellion against God, expressed through sinful desires, self-rule, and disobedience. Those in Christ are no longer governed by the pattern of life that marked their former bondage to sin. Gal 5:24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh… but according to the Spirit. The Holy Spirit indwells believers, giving them new life and enabling obedience to God. His presence produces a life increasingly shaped by holiness, demonstrating the reality of the new covenant and the saving work of Christ. Gal 5:16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not… Those who live according to the flesh Those who live according to the flesh are governed by fallen human nature and its resistance to God. The flesh includes more than the body; it encompasses desires, values, and actions shaped by sin. Eph 2:3 All of us also lived among them at one time,… set their minds on the things of the flesh; Their thoughts and ambitions are directed toward self-centered desires, worldly gain, and conduct contrary to God’s will. Php 3:19 Their end is destruction, their god is their belly,… but those who live according to the Spirit Those who live according to the Spirit belong to Christ and are guided by the Holy Spirit, whose presence marks the new life given to believers. Gal 5:25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us walk in step… set their minds on the things of the Spirit. Their desires are directed toward God’s will, producing the character and conduct that reflect obedience to Him. Col 3:1-2 Therefore, since you have been raised with Christ,… The mind of the flesh is death, A life governed by fallen human desires stands opposed to God and leads to spiritual separation from Him. Since the Fall, humanity has been marked by sin, and the flesh pursues self-rule rather than obedience to the Creator. Its end is death, both in its present alienation from God and in the judgment sin deserves. Rom 7:5 For when we lived according to the flesh, the sinful… but the mind of the Spirit is life and peace, The Holy Spirit directs believers into a renewed life that seeks God’s will. Through Christ, they receive eternal life, fellowship with God, and peace that comes from reconciliation with Him. This peace includes inward stability and the restored wholeness God gives to those who belong to Him. Jhn 6:63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing.… because the mind of the flesh is hostile to God: Since Adam’s fall, humanity’s natural disposition is turned from God toward self-rule and sinful desire. This hostility is active rebellion against His authority, seen in the corruption before the flood and in humanity’s continued rejection of God’s truth. Col 1:21 Once you were alienated from God and were hostile.… It does not submit to God’s law, God gave His law through Moses to reveal His holy standards and expose sin. Israel’s repeated idolatry and disobedience showed that fallen people resist God’s commands not merely in outward actions but in the heart. Rom 10:3 Because they were ignorant of God’s righteousness… nor can it do so. Apart from God’s grace, the unregenerate person is spiritually dead and unable to obey God from a renewed heart. New birth by the Holy Spirit is necessary, giving believers a new heart and the power to live according to God’s will. Rom 7:18 I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my flesh…… Those controlled by the flesh “Those controlled by the flesh” describes people whose lives are governed by fallen human desires rather than by God’s Spirit. Paul contrasts the unregenerate condition with the new life given in Christ, not the physical body with spiritual life. Eph 2:3 All of us also lived among them at one time,… cannot please God. Sinful people cannot earn God’s acceptance or submit to him rightly apart from his grace. Only through Christ and the indwelling Spirit can believers live in a manner that honors God. Heb 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God.… You, however, are controlled not by the flesh, Paul contrasts the former life dominated by sinful human desires with the new life of those united to Christ. The flesh represents humanity’s fallen disposition, which resists God and produces conduct opposed to His commands. Gal 5:16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not… but by the Spirit, Believers are under the governing influence of the Holy Spirit, who gives new desires and enables obedience to God. This inward change distinguishes Christian life from mere outward religious effort. Jhn 6:63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing.… if the Spirit of God lives in you. The Holy Spirit permanently indwells every true believer. His presence identifies those whom God has made His own and assures their future inheritance. 1Co 3:16 Do you not know that you yourselves are God’s temple…… And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, Paul uses Spirit of God and Spirit of Christ for the same Holy Spirit, showing the close unity of the Father, Son, and Spirit in salvation. No one belongs to Christ apart from the Spirit’s saving work. 1Pe 1:11 trying to determine the time and setting… he does not belong to Christ. Membership in Christ’s people rests on genuine union with Him, evidenced by the indwelling Spirit rather than ancestry, religious activity, or outward profession. Jhn 10:27 My sheep listen to My voice; I know them… But if Christ is in you, If Christ is in believers through the Holy Spirit, they belong to God and share in the risen Lord’s life. Though their bodies remain subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives them new life that sin cannot overcome. 2Co 13:5 Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith;… your body is dead because of sin, Your body remains subject to weakness, decay, and physical death because humanity lives under the consequences of Adam’s fall. Salvation does not yet remove mortality in the present age. Rom 7:24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me… yet your spirit is alive because of righteousness. Those justified through Christ possess spiritual life before God. Christ’s righteousness secures their standing with Him and guarantees the future resurrection of the body. Rom 5:18 So then, just as one trespass brought condemnation for all… And if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, The Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead lives in believers. His indwelling presence marks them as God’s people and unites them with the risen Christ. Jhn 14:17 The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him… He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead God the Father raised His Son bodily, vindicating Jesus’ identity and completing His victory over sin and death. Christ’s resurrection stands as the foundation for the future resurrection of all who belong to Him. Act 2:24 But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him… will also give life to your mortal bodies God’s saving work includes more than spiritual renewal in the present; it promises the resurrection and transformation of believers’ physical bodies. What is now subject to weakness and death will be raised in incorruptible life. 1Co 15:53-54 For the perishable must be clothed with the imperishable… through His Spirit, who lives in you. The Holy Spirit is God’s abiding presence and the guarantee that His resurrection promise will be fulfilled. The same Spirit who gives believers new life now will bring their mortal bodies into the fullness of redemption. 1Co 3:16 Do you not know that you yourselves are God’s temple……
Heirs with ChristUnited to Christ and made alive by the Spirit, believers belong to God and are bound to live in keeping with the salvation they have received. Paul addresses them as members of one family in Christ, sharing both the privileges and responsibilities of God’s children. Rom 13:8 Be indebted to no one, except to one another in love.… but it is not to the flesh, The fallen nature no longer holds rightful authority over those whom God has redeemed. Though believers still contend with sinful desires, they are no longer enslaved to sin or required to yield to its demands. Rom 6:12-14 Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body… to live according to it. A life governed by the flesh leads away from God and toward death, whereas those led by the Spirit are called to live in obedience to Him. Gal 5:19-21 The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality… For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; A life governed by fallen human desires leads to death, both in its present alienation from God and in final judgment. Paul warns believers not to return to the sinful patterns from which Christ has delivered them. Gal 6:8 The one who sows to please his flesh, from the flesh… but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, The Holy Spirit enables believers to resist and renounce sinful actions. This is an ongoing work of sanctification, requiring deliberate obedience and dependence on God rather than self-reliance. Col 3:5 Put to death, therefore, the components… you will live. Those who belong to Christ possess new life now and the sure hope of resurrection and eternal life with God. Jhn 14:19 In a little while the world will see Me no more,… For all who are led by the Spirit of God Believers live under the Spirit’s direction rather than the rule of the flesh. God had promised to place His Spirit within His people and move them to walk in His ways. Such leading is received through willing obedience as the Spirit directs believers away from sinful desires and into conformity with God’s will. Gal 5:18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. are sons of God. Those who belong to Christ have been brought into God’s family with the full standing of heirs. Israel was called God’s son under the old covenant, but through Christ this family relationship extends to all who believe, both Jew and Gentile. Their sonship rests on God’s adoption and on their union with His true Son. Gal 3:26 You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For you did not receive a spirit of slavery that returns you to fear, Life under sin and the law left people conscious of guilt, judgment, and death. Israel’s bondage in Egypt illustrated the fear and helplessness of slavery. Through Christ, believers are no longer condemned or held under sin’s power. Heb 2:14-15 Now since the children have flesh and blood,… but you received the Spirit of adoption to sonship, The Holy Spirit brings believers into God’s family with the full standing of sons and heirs. In Roman society, adoption granted a child a secure place in the household and a legal claim to inheritance. God gives His children a new identity and the promised inheritance through Christ. Gal 4:4-6 But when the time had fully come, God sent His Son,… by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit enables believers to approach God with the confidence and affection of children before a loving father. Jesus used this address in Gethsemane as He submitted to the Father’s will. Those united to Christ may call upon God without the fear that marked their former slavery. Gal 4:6 And because you are sons, God sent the Spirit of His Son… The Spirit Himself The Holy Spirit is a divine Person, not an impersonal power. He personally works in believers, guiding, strengthening, and confirming God’s saving work in them. Jhn 15:26 When the Advocate comes, whom I will send to you… testifies with our spirit The Spirit gives inward assurance alongside the believer’s renewed spirit. His witness confirms the reality of faith, forgiveness, and belonging to God. Heb 10:15-17 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this.… that we are God’s children. Through Christ, believers are adopted into God’s family and receive the standing of true children rather than slaves to sin. This adoption grants them the promised inheritance shared with Christ. Jhn 1:12-13 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed… And if we are children, then we are heirs: Believers adopted by God receive the full standing of sons and daughters, not as servants or outsiders. In keeping with the inheritance promised to Abraham’s family, they share in the blessings secured through faith in Christ. Gal 4:7 So you are no longer a slave, but a son;… heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ— God Himself is the believer’s lasting inheritance, together with eternal life, resurrection, and a place in Christ’s kingdom. Christ alone is the eternal Son by nature; His people become co-heirs through their union with Him. Eph 3:6 This mystery is that through the gospel the Gentiles are… if indeed we suffer with Him, Following Christ brings opposition, hardship, and the daily cost of faithful obedience in a fallen world. Such suffering identifies believers with the rejected and crucified Lord. Php 3:10 I want to know Christ and the power of His resurrection… so that we may also be glorified with Him. Those joined to Christ in His sufferings will also share in His resurrection glory. Their present afflictions will end when Christ returns and completes their salvation. Col 3:4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then……
Future GloryPaul speaks from settled conviction, shaped by his calling, suffering, and confidence in God’s promises. He does not deny hardship but views it in light of God’s final purpose for His people. Php 3:7-8 But whatever was gain to me I count as loss… that our present sufferings Believers in Paul’s day endured rejection, persecution, imprisonment, poverty, illness, and the burdens of life in a fallen world. Suffering remains part of the present age for those who belong to Christ. 2Co 4:8-10 We are hard pressed on all sides, but not crushed;… are not comparable Present trials are real, yet they cannot be weighed against what God has prepared. Their duration and effect are limited, while God’s coming work is complete and everlasting. 2Co 4:17 For our light and momentary affliction… to the glory God will display His majesty in the redemption and transformation of His people. Those united to Christ will share in the honor, purity, and life that belong to Him. Rom 5:2 through whom we have gained access by faith into this grace… that will be revealed in us. The promised glory awaits Christ’s return, when believers will be raised, fully conformed to Him, and freed from sin, weakness, and death. This hope includes both the individual believer and the restored people of God. 2Th 1:10 on the day He comes to be glorified in His saints… The creation waits The natural world, placed under the curse following Adam’s sin, remains subject to corruption and death, yet it has not been abandoned by God. Psa 104:27-30 All creatures look to You to give them their food… in eager expectation Creation is portrayed as watching intently for the fulfillment of God’s promised renewal. 1Co 1:7 Therefore you do not lack any spiritual gift… for the revelation of the sons of God. At Christ’s return, believers will be openly revealed in their glorified state as God’s adopted children. Creation will then be freed from decay and share in the liberty of God’s redeemed people. 1Jn 3:2 Beloved, we are now children of God… For the creation was subjected to futility, Following Adam’s sin, God placed the created order under the curse. The world now bears frustration, decay, and death rather than the unbroken order for which it was made. Gen 3:17-19 And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened… not by its own will, The earth and its creatures did not choose this condition but suffer the consequences of human rebellion. Jer 12:4 How long will the land mourn and the grass… but because of the One who subjected it, God imposed this judgment in response to sin, while retaining His purpose to redeem what the Fall had damaged. Isa 45:7 I form the light and create the darkness;… in hope Creation’s present bondage is not final; God has appointed a future restoration in which it will share in the freedom and glory of His redeemed people. Act 3:21 Heaven must take Him in until the time comes… that the creation itself The whole created order, originally declared very good, came under the effects of Adam’s sin and now shares in the consequences of the curse. Col 1:16-20 For in Him all things were created, things in heaven… will be set free God’s redemption reaches beyond mankind. When Christ completes His work at the resurrection, creation will be released from its present fallen condition. Isa 61:1 The Spirit of the Lord GOD is on Me, because the LORD… from its bondage to decay Death, corruption, disaster, and decline mark a world subjected to the curse. This condition is temporary and will not remain forever. Gen 3:17-19 And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened… and brought into the glorious freedom Creation will be renewed and freed from corruption, sharing in the restoration connected with God’s final victory over sin and death. 2Co 3:17-18 Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit… of the children of God. God’s children already belong to Him through faith in Christ, but their full freedom will be revealed when they receive glorified bodies and their inheritance in God’s renewed creation. Jhn 1:12-13 But to all who did receive Him, to those who believed… We know that the whole creation All nature bears the effects of humanity’s fall, including decay, disorder, and death. The created world, once declared good, now shares in the consequences of sin. Col 1:16-17 For in Him all things were created, things in heaven… has been groaning together Creation’s suffering is universal, evident in its continual corruption and mortality. It awaits the day when God removes the curse and restores what sin has damaged. Gen 3:17-19 And to Adam He said: “Because you have listened… in the pains of childbirth The suffering is severe, yet it points toward an intended outcome. Like labor before birth, creation’s present distress will give way to renewal when God brings His redeemed order in full. Isa 26:17-18 As a woman with child about to give birth… until the present time. This condition has continued throughout human history and remains until Christ completes the restoration of creation. Mrk 13:19 For those will be days of tribulation unseen… Not only that, but we ourselves, Believers share in the fallen condition of creation while living under the hope secured by Christ. Paul includes himself among those who experience present weakness and suffering. 2Co 5:1 For we know that if the earthly tent we live in… who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, The Holy Spirit’s indwelling presence is God’s pledge that His work of salvation will be completed. Though believers have received new life, they have not yet entered the fullness of their inheritance. Eph 1:13-14 And in Him, having heard and believed the word of truth… groan inwardly Their longing is deep and often unseen, arising from life in mortal bodies still affected by sin, pain, and death. This inward groaning joins creation’s expectation of God’s final renewal. 2Co 5:2 For in this tent we groan, longing to be clothed… as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, Believers are already God’s children, yet they await the public and complete fulfillment of that relationship when Christ returns and all opposition to God’s purposes is removed. Gal 4:5 to redeem those under the law,… the redemption of our bodies. Salvation includes the resurrection and transformation of the physical body. God will fully overcome death, restore His people, and bring their adoption to its intended completion. Php 3:20-21 But our citizenship is in heaven, and we eagerly await… For in this hope we were saved; Salvation brings the sure expectation of full redemption, including the resurrection of the body and the glory promised to God’s children. Believers possess salvation now, yet await its final completion when Christ returns. 1Pe 1:3-5 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!… but hope that is seen is no hope at all. The promised redemption remains future and therefore unseen. Present suffering, decay, and death have not yet been removed, but God’s promises make the coming restoration certain. Heb 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for… Who hopes for what he can already see? Hope looks beyond present circumstances to what God will accomplish. The Christians in Rome lived under earthly pressures and uncertainty, but their confidence rested in the future glory God had prepared, not in conditions visible in the present. 1Pe 1:8-9 Though you have not seen Him, you love Him;… But if we hope for what we do not yet see, Christian hope rests on God’s sure promises rather than present circumstances. Believers await the full redemption of their bodies, the removal of corruption, and the revealed glory of God’s children. Heb 11:1 Now faith is the assurance of what we hope for… we wait for it patiently. This waiting requires steadfast endurance while creation remains under the effects of sin and believers experience weakness and suffering. God’s promised future is certain, though its fulfillment comes in His appointed time. Hab 2:3 For the vision awaits an appointed time;… In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. As believers wait for full redemption amid suffering, the Holy Spirit does not leave them to bear their frailty alone. He strengthens God’s children in the limitations that remain in mortal life. 2Co 12:9 But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you… For we do not know how we ought to pray, Human need is often clearer than the proper request. In pain, uncertainty, and longing for deliverance, believers may lack wisdom to know what to ask according to God’s will. Luk 11:1-4 One day in a place where Jesus had just finished praying,… but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us The Holy Spirit personally brings the needs of believers before the Father. His work reflects God’s continuing care for all who belong to Christ. Eph 6:18 Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer… with groans too deep for words. These unspoken intercessions express perfect knowledge of both God’s will and the believer’s deepest need, even when human prayers cannot be adequately formed or spoken. 1Sa 1:13-15 Hannah was praying in her heart, and though her lips… And He who searches our hearts God knows the inner life of every person—the desires, motives, burdens, and needs hidden from others. Nothing in the believer’s heart is concealed from Him. Rev 2:23 Then I will strike her children dead, and all the churches… knows the mind of the Spirit, The Father perfectly knows the Holy Spirit’s purpose and intention. The Spirit’s work is fully united with the will of God. 1Co 2:10-11 But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit.… because the Spirit intercedes for the saints In their weakness and uncertainty, believers are not left to pray alone. The Holy Spirit represents them before God, bringing their needs before Him. Eph 6:18 Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer… according to the will of God. The Spirit’s intercession never fails because it is always consistent with God’s perfect purpose for His people. 1Jn 5:14-15 And this is the confidence that we have before Him:…
God Works in All ThingsPaul states a settled confidence shared by believers, grounded in God’s faithfulness rather than changing circumstances. 1Jn 5:19 We know that we are of God, and that the whole world… that God works God remains actively involved in the lives of His people, directing events without surrendering His sovereign rule. Gen 50:20 As for you, what you intended against me for evil,… all things together Joys, sorrows, successes, failures, suffering, and ordinary circumstances are all within His providential care. Eph 1:11 In Him we were also chosen as God’s own,… for the good The promised good is God’s saving work in His people, shaping them in holiness and preparing them for His purposes. Psa 84:11 For the LORD God is a sun and a shield;… of those who love Him, This promise belongs to those who belong to God and whose lives are marked by love, faith, and obedience toward Him. Deu 7:9 Know therefore that the LORD your God is God,… who are called Their relationship with God began with His gracious, effectual summons—His calling—by which He brought them into salvation. 2Th 2:14 He called you through our gospel, so that you may share in… according to His purpose. Nothing in their lives lies outside God’s eternal plan, which will accomplish His glory and the final good of His people. 2Ti 1:9 He has saved us and called us to a holy calling… For those God foreknew, God’s saving purpose began before their response to Him, resting in His eternal knowledge and loving choice of His people. 1Pe 1:2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father… He also predestined He appointed their destiny according to His sovereign plan, not merely to receive blessings but to become what He intended them to be. Eph 1:5 He predestined us for adoption as His sons… to be conformed to the image of His Son, Salvation includes an ongoing transformation of character and a future completion in resurrection glory, when believers will fully reflect Christ’s holiness. 2Co 3:18 And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the glory… so that He would be the firstborn among many brothers. Jesus holds the place of honor and authority in God’s family. Through Him, those redeemed by God are brought into a true family relationship with the risen Son and share in the inheritance He secured. Heb 2:11-12 For both the One who sanctifies and those who are sanctified… And those He predestined, God’s saving purpose begins with His eternal decision to set apart a people who will be conformed to the likeness of His Son. His plan is not uncertain or dependent on human merit, but rests on His sovereign purpose. Eph 1:5 He predestined us for adoption as His sons… He also called; In time, God brings those He has purposed to save into a real response to the gospel. Through the proclamation of Christ, He summons them from sin and unbelief to faith and new life. 2Th 2:14 He called you through our gospel, so that you may share in… those He called, He also justified; Those who trust in Christ are declared righteous before God on the basis of Christ’s atoning death and resurrection. Their guilt is removed, and they are received into peace with God. Rom 5:1 Therefore, since we have been justified through faith… those He justified, He also glorified. The final completion of salvation is certain. Though believers still await the resurrection and the renewal of their bodies, God speaks of their glorification as accomplished because His purpose cannot fail. Heb 2:10 In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting for God… What then shall we say in response to these things? Paul gathers the assurances of Romans 8: believers have been justified, adopted as God’s children, given the Holy Spirit, promised future glory, and held by God’s purpose. The proper response is not uncertainty but confidence in what God has accomplished and will complete. Rom 4:1 What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather… If God is for us, God’s favor toward His people rests on His saving purpose in Christ. He has not merely offered help from a distance; He has acted decisively to redeem, preserve, and bring His children into glory. Psa 56:9 Then my enemies will retreat on the day I cry for help.… who can be against us? Opposition from the world, Satan, suffering, and death remains real, but none can overturn God’s purpose or separate believers from His love. No enemy has greater authority or power than the God who has secured salvation through His Son. Psa 118:6 The LORD is on my side; I will not be afraid.… He who did not spare His own Son God did not withhold Jesus from the suffering and death required for humanity’s redemption. Abraham’s willingness to offer Isaac foreshadowed this greater sacrifice: Abraham was stopped, but the Father gave His Son as the atoning sacrifice for sin. Gen 22:12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy or do anything to him,” said the angel… but gave Him up for us all, Jesus was delivered to death in Jerusalem under Roman authority, bearing the judgment sin deserved. His sacrifice was sufficient for all people and is received by those who believe in Him. Rom 4:25 He was delivered over to death for our trespasses… how will He not also, along with Him, Having given the greatest possible gift, God’s purpose for His people cannot fail. Every saving benefit and spiritual provision comes through union with Christ. Col 2:10 And you have been made complete in Christ… freely give us all things? God supplies all that is necessary to accomplish His will, including forgiveness, sanctification, perseverance, and final glory. These gifts are given by grace, not earned by human effort. 2Pe 1:3 His divine power has given us everything we need.… Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? Paul draws on courtroom imagery to show the security of those God has chosen in Christ. No accusation can overturn God’s saving purpose or separate believers from the standing He has given them. Their acceptance rests on God’s action, not on their own merit. Isa 50:8-9 The One who vindicates Me is near. Who will dare?… It is God who justifies. God Himself declares sinners righteous through faith in Jesus Christ. Christ’s sacrificial death satisfied the demands of God’s justice, and His righteousness is credited to those who belong to Him. Since the Judge has rendered the verdict, no charge can prevail against His people. Rom 4:5 However, to the one who does not work but believes in Him… Who is there to condemn us? No accusation can stand against those whom God has justified. The setting is judicial: God is the righteous Judge, and no human, spiritual power, or charge of sin can overturn His verdict. Isa 50:8-9 The One who vindicates Me is near. Who will dare?… For Christ Jesus, who died, Jesus bore sin’s penalty through His crucifixion, fulfilling the work foretold of the suffering Servant. His death provides the basis on which believers are forgiven and declared righteous before God. 1Co 15:3 For what I received I passed on to you: that Christ died… and more than that was raised to life, His bodily resurrection confirmed His victory over sin and death and demonstrated that His sacrifice was accepted by the Father. The risen Christ secures the future resurrection and eternal life of His people. Act 2:24 But God raised Him from the dead, releasing Him… is at the right hand of God— Having ascended after His resurrection, Jesus now occupies the place of supreme authority beside the Father.
