Philippians 4
Berean Study Bible

Rejoice in the Lord

Therefore, my brothers,

Paul addresses the Philippian believers as members of God’s family, united through faith in Christ despite differences of background and status. The conclusion follows his warning against earthly-minded living and his reminder that believers belong to heaven.

1Co 15:58 Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast and immovable.…

whom I love and long for,

Paul’s affection reflects the enduring relationship formed through their partnership in the gospel. Though separated by imprisonment and distance, he remains deeply concerned for their spiritual welfare.

my joy and crown,

Their faithfulness is a source of joy to Paul and evidence that his labor among them has borne lasting fruit. They are like the victor’s wreath, representing the reward and success of gospel ministry.

I urge Euodia and Syntyche

Paul addresses two women known in the Philippian church, apparently fellow workers in the advance of the gospel. Their names were brought before the whole congregation because their relationship affected the church’s peace and witness.

to agree with each other

A real disagreement had arisen between them. Paul calls them to lay aside division and pursue a shared mind rather than allowing a personal conflict to disturb the fellowship of believers.

Their reconciliation was to rest on their common union with Christ. As members of the same church and servants of the same Lord, they were to live in the unity Christ establishes among His people.

Yes, and I ask you, my true yokefellow,

Paul appeals to a trusted fellow laborer in the Philippian church, someone well suited to assist in restoring unity. The individual is not named, but was evidently known to the congregation and recognized as a faithful partner in the work of the gospel.

to help these women who have contended at my side for the gospel,

Euodia and Syntyche had served actively alongside Paul in advancing the gospel. Their disagreement did not erase their faithful service, but it required the help of mature believers who could encourage reconciliation and preserve peace in the church.

Rejoice in the Lord always.

Paul commands a settled joy grounded in Christ rather than comfort or circumstances. The Philippian believers lived in a Roman colony and faced pressure for their allegiance to Jesus. Even so, their union with the Lord gave them reason for enduring confidence and gladness.

Php 3:1 Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord.…
Psa 97:12 Rejoice in the LORD, you righteous ones,…
1Th 5:16 Rejoice at all times.

I will say it again:

Repetition gives the command added force. Paul wrote while imprisoned, yet his circumstances did not overturn his confidence in Christ or his hope in God’s purposes.

Gal 1:9 As we have said before, so now I say again:…
2Co 11:16 Let no one take me for a fool. But if you do,…
2Co 13:2 I already warned you the second time I was with you.…

Rejoice!

The church was to share this joy together, displaying the life produced by faith in Christ. Such joy looks beyond present hardship to the certainty of God’s salvation and His coming kingdom.

Zec 9:9 Rejoice greatly, O Daughter of Zion! Shout in triumph…
Zep 3:14 Sing for joy, O Daughter of Zion; shout aloud, O Israel!…
Psa 118:24 This is the day that the LORD has made; we will rejoice…

Let your gentleness be apparent to all.

Believers are to be known for a patient, gracious, and reasonable spirit in every setting. In Philippi, a Roman colony shaped by status, power, and public honor, such conduct visibly distinguished those who belonged to Christ. Gentleness does not mean weakness or compromise, but restraint and kindness toward others, including those who oppose or mistreat them. Christian character is to be evident not only within the church but before the wider community.

Tit 3:2 malign no one, and to be peaceable and gentle…
2Ti 2:24-25 And a servant of the Lord must not be quarrelsome…
Eph 4:2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience,…

The Lord is near.

Christ is present with His people and will return as He promised. His nearness gives believers confidence to respond to hardship without bitterness and to treat others with patience. The certainty of His return also places present circumstances in proper perspective, reminding the church that the Lord sees their conduct and will complete His work among them.

Psa 119:151 You are near, O LORD, and all Your commandments are true.
Jas 5:8 You, too, be patient and strengthen your hearts…
Rev 22:20 He who testifies to these things says, “Yes.”…

Be anxious for nothing,

Believers are not to be ruled by fear over circumstances, needs, or the future. Paul wrote to Christians in Philippi, a Roman colony where loyalty to Christ could bring social pressure and material uncertainty. God’s rule and care provide a firm basis for refusing anxiety.

Mat 6:25-34 Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life,…
1Pe 5:7 Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you.

but in everything,

No concern is too small or too difficult to bring before God. Daily needs, suffering, decisions, relationships, and dangers all fall under His authority.

1Th 5:16-18 Rejoice at all times.…
Eph 6:18 Pray in the Spirit at all times, with every kind of prayer…

by prayer and petition,

Prayer expresses dependence on God, while petition, or supplication, brings specific needs before Him. Rather than carrying burdens alone, believers are called to seek God’s help in every situation.

Mat 7:7-11 Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find;…

Gratitude recognizes God’s faithfulness, provision, and mercy even while a need remains unresolved. Thanksgiving guards prayer from becoming only a list of fears and demands.

1Jn 5:14-15 And this is the confidence that we have before Him:…

Deliberate attention to these qualities shapes Christian character and directs the believer’s conduct.

Psa 1:2 But his delight is in the Law of the LORD, and on His law…
Col 3:2 Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.

Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me,

Paul points believers to both his instruction and his conduct. As Christ’s apostle, he had taught the gospel publicly, delivered the faith entrusted to him, and modeled its demands through a life marked by humility, endurance, and obedience. Early Christian disciples learned through teaching as well as close observation of those who led them. Paul therefore sets before the Philippians a consistent pattern of doctrine and life.

Php 3:17 Join one another in following my example, brothers…
2Ti 3:10 You, however, have observed my teaching, my conduct,…
2Th 3:7 For you yourselves know how you ought to imitate us,…

put it into practice.

Christian truth was not meant to remain theoretical. The Philippians were to obey what they had received, allowing the gospel to shape their relationships, conduct, worship, and witness in a pagan society. Faith in Christ produces a life that reflects His commands.

Jas 1:22 Be doers of the word, and not hearers only.…
Mat 7:24 Therefore everyone who hears these words of Mine…
Jhn 13:17 If you know these things, you will be blessed…

And the God of peace will be with you.

God grants His abiding presence to those who walk in obedience to Him. He is the God who reconciles sinners to Himself through Christ and establishes peace among His people. From prison, Paul assures the Philippians that God’s peace and presence are not dependent on favorable circumstances, but rest on the faithful Lord who remains with His people.

2Co 13:11 Finally, brothers, rejoice! Aim for perfect harmony,…
Rom 15:33 The God of peace be with all of you. Amen.

The Generosity of the Philippians

Now I rejoice greatly in the Lord

Paul’s joy rests in Christ, not in his imprisonment or material circumstances. Even while confined, he rejoices in the Lord’s work among the believers.

Php 3:1 Finally, my brothers, rejoice in the Lord.…
Hab 3:18 yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice…

that at last you have revived your concern for me.

The Philippians had renewed their practical support for Paul through a gift sent with Epaphroditus. Their generosity reflected the longstanding partnership they shared since the church was established in Philippi.

2Co 7:7 not only by his arrival, but also by the comfort…
2Co 8:16 But thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus…

You were indeed concerned,

Paul recognizes that their care for him had not ceased. Their renewed gift did not create their concern but gave it visible expression.

Php 2:20 I have nobody else like him who will genuinely care…
1Co 12:25 so that there should be no division in the body,…

but you had no opportunity to show it.

Circumstances had prevented them from sending aid earlier, likely because of distance, travel, and communication barriers. Paul receives their gift gratefully without suggesting that they had neglected him.

Gal 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good…
Pro 3:27 Do not withhold good from the deserving,…

I am not saying this out of need,

Paul thanks the Philippian believers for their renewed support without suggesting that his well-being depends on their gift. Though imprisoned under Roman authority, he rests in God’s care rather than in material security.

2Co 11:9 And when I was with you and in need, I was not a burden…
1Ti 6:6-7 Of course, godliness with contentment is great gain.…

for I have learned

His confidence was formed through years of ministry, hardship, opposition, travel, and God’s faithful provision. Contentment had become a settled discipline through dependence on the Lord.

Jas 1:2-4 Consider it pure joy, my brothers, when you encounter trials…
Rom 5:3-4 Not only that, but we also rejoice in our sufferings,…
Heb 12:11 No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful.…

to be content

Paul possesses an inward steadiness that does not rise or fall with comfort, income, freedom, or approval. This contentment, from the Greek autarkes, means self-sufficient, yet Paul redefines it as sufficiency in Christ, not in favorable conditions.

Heb 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content…
Pro 30:8-9 Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me.…
1Ti 6:8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content…

regardless of my circumstances.

Whether facing hunger, imprisonment, abundance, or hardship, Paul remains confident that God is present and faithful. His circumstances do not determine his joy or his trust.

Job 1:21 Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked I will return.…
Hab 3:17-18 Though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food,…
2Co 12:10 That is why, for the sake of Christ, I delight…

I know how to live humbly,

Paul had often endured poverty, hardship, imprisonment, and persecution during his ministry. Such circumstances taught him to depend on God rather than on comfort, security, or human support.

1Pe 5:5-6 Young men, in the same way, submit yourselves…
Jas 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.
Pro 3:34 He mocks the mockers, but gives grace to the humble.

and I know how to abound.

He had also received generous help from churches and experienced seasons when his needs were fully supplied. Prosperity did not lead him to pride or self-reliance.

2Co 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you,…
1Ti 6:17-19 Instruct those who are rich in the present age…
Deu 8:17-18 You might say in your heart, “The power and strength”…

In any and every situation

Whether his circumstances were favorable or severe, Paul’s peace was not governed by changing conditions. He trusted God’s care in both ease and hardship.

Ecc 7:14 In the day of prosperity, be joyful, but in the day of…
2Co 6:4-10 Rather, as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way…
Rom 8:28 And we know that God works all things together for good…

I have learned the secret

Contentment was learned through a life of obedience, suffering, service, and reliance on Christ. It was not a hidden teaching but a settled confidence in God’s sufficient grace.

1Ti 6:6-8 Of course, godliness with contentment is great gain.…
Heb 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content…
Psa 131:2 Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul;…

of being filled and being hungry,

Paul could receive abundance with gratitude and endure hunger without abandoning faith. Physical provision did not determine his joy or faithfulness.

Psa 107:9 For He satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry…
Luk 1:53 He has filled the hungry with good things,…
Pro 27:7 The soul that is full loathes honey, but to a hungry soul,…

of having plenty and having need.

His varied experiences showed that possessions neither establish nor diminish a believer’s standing before God. Paul remained content because his life and strength were found in Christ.

2Co 8:13-15 It is not our intention that others may be relieved,…
Pro 30:8-9 Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me.…
Act 4:34-35 There were no needy ones among them, because those who owned…

I can do all things

Paul writes from prison after describing how he had learned contentment in hunger and plenty, need and abundance. He does not claim unlimited personal achievement, but confidence to endure every circumstance and carry out the responsibilities God gives him.

2Co 3:5 Not that we are competent in ourselves…
Eph 3:20 Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all…
Mat 19:26 Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible…

through Christ

Christ is the source of this endurance. Paul’s strength did not rest in favorable conditions, personal resolve, or material support, but in his living union with the risen Lord.

1Co 15:57 But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory…
Rom 8:37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors…
Jhn 15:5 I am the vine and you are the branches…

who gives me strength.

Christ continually supplied the spiritual strength Paul needed for suffering, service, and faithful obedience.

2Ti 4:17 But the Lord stood by me and strengthened me,…
Isa 40:29 He gives power to the faint and increases the strength…
2Co 12:9 But He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you…

Nevertheless,

Paul’s contentment in Christ did not lessen his appreciation for the Philippians’ concern. Their gift remained a meaningful expression of faithful partnership during his hardship.

2Co 8:12 For if the eagerness is there, the gift is acceptable…
2Co 9:7 Each one should give what he has decided…
Gal 6:10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good…

you have done well

Their support was rightly commendable because they stood with Paul in the work of the gospel rather than withdrawing when his imprisonment made association with him costly.

Mat 25:21 His master replied, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant!’…
3Jn 1:6 They have testified to the church about your love…
Heb 6:10 For God is not unjust. He will not forget your work…

to share

They entered into his circumstances as fellow laborers, providing practical help and identifying themselves with his ministry.

Heb 13:16 And do not neglect to do good and to share…
1Ti 6:18-19 Instruct them to do good, to be rich in good works,…
Rom 15:26-27 For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make…

in my affliction.

Paul’s confinement and suffering for the gospel formed the setting for their generosity, revealing their continued loyalty to him and to the message he proclaimed.

Php 1:7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you…
2Ti 1:16-18 May the Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus,…
Php 1:29-30 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ…

And as you Philippians know,

Paul appeals to the believers’ firsthand knowledge of their shared history. He had first preached in Philippi during his second missionary journey, and the church had remained closely connected to him.

Php 1:5 because of your partnership in the gospel…
Act 16:12-15 From there we went to the Roman colony of Philippi.…

in the early days of the gospel,

The gospel had only recently entered Macedonia and Europe. The Philippian church was formed amid opposition, conversion, and the beginning of a new work among Gentiles.

Act 17:1-4 When they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia,…

Act 16:39-40 They came to appease them and led them out.…

no church but you partnered with me

The Philippians stood out for their ongoing practical support of Paul’s missionary work. Their concern for him continued after he had left their city.

Php 1:7 It is right for me to feel this way about all of you…
2Co 11:8-9 I robbed other churches by accepting their support…
2Co 8:1-4 Now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace…

in the matter of giving and receiving.

Their gifts expressed genuine fellowship in the advance of the gospel. Paul viewed their support as a shared participation in his ministry and in the blessings connected with it.

1Co 9:11-14 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, …
Rom 15:26-27 For Macedonia and Achaia were pleased to make…
3Jn 1:5-8 Beloved, you are faithful in what you are doing…

For even while I was in Thessalonica,

Paul recalls his ministry in the Macedonian city he reached after leaving Philippi. Thessalonica was an important commercial center on the Via Egnatia. Though opposition soon forced Paul to depart, he preached there long enough for a church to be established.

Act 17:1-9 When they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia,…
1Th 2:9 Surely you recall, brothers, our labor and toil.…
2Th 3:8 nor did we eat anyone’s food without paying for it.…

you provided for my needs

The Philippian believers sent practical support to Paul while he served in Thessalonica. Their gifts helped meet his material needs and allowed him to continue preaching without becoming dependent on the new congregation.

2Co 11:8-9 I robbed other churches by accepting their support…
1Co 9:11-14 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, …
2Co 12:13 In what way were you inferior to the other churches…

again and again.

Their support was not a single offering but repeated assistance. Though the Philippian church was young, its members recognized their shared responsibility in Paul’s work and remained faithful partners in the advance of the gospel.

2Co 8:1-5 Now, brothers, we want you to know about the grace…
2Co 9:1-5 Now about the service to the saints, there is no need…
Php 1:5 because of your partnership in the gospel…

Not that I am seeking a gift,

Paul assures the Philippians that he is not trying to gain personal benefit from their support. Though imprisoned and dependent on others, he refuses to treat their generosity as a source of obligation or patronage.

2Co 12:14 See, I am ready to come to you a third time…
1Co 9:18 What then is my reward? That in preaching the gospel…
1Th 2:5 As you know, we never used words of flattery…

but I am looking for the fruit

Their giving demonstrates the work of Christ in them. By sharing in Paul’s ministry, they show growing faith, love, and commitment to the advance of the gospel.

2Co 9:10 He who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food…
Col 1:6 that has come to you. All over the world this gospel…
Gal 6:9 Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time……

that may be credited to your account.

Paul views their generosity as an investment with eternal value. God sees their faithful support and will reward it, even though Paul himself is not seeking payment or personal advantage.

Mat 6:20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,…
Luk 12:33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor.…
1Ti 6:19 treasuring up for themselves a firm foundation…

I have all I need and more,

Paul writes from imprisonment with confidence that the Philippians’ gift has fully met his present needs. His contentment rests not in abundance itself but in God’s faithful provision.

2Co 9:8 And God is able to make all grace abound to you,…
1Ti 6:6-8 Of course, godliness with contentment is great gain.…
Heb 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content…

now that I have received your gifts from Epaphroditus.

Epaphroditus had carried the Philippian church’s support to Paul and had served him at personal cost. Their gift showed their continued partnership with Paul in the advance of the gospel.

2Co 8:16-18 But thanks be to God, who put into the heart of Titus…
2Co 8:20-21 We want to avoid any criticism of the way we administer…
2Co 9:12-14 For this ministry of service is not only supplying the needs…

They are a fragrant offering,

Paul describes their generosity in terms drawn from Israel’s sacrificial worship. Their practical support, given in faith and love, rose before God as an act of worship.

Eph 5:2 and walk in love, just as Christ loved us…
Lev 1:9 The entrails and legs must be washed with water,…
Gen 8:21 When the LORD smelled the pleasing aroma,…

an acceptable sacrifice,

The gift was acceptable because it came from willing hearts devoted to Christ, not merely from outward duty.

1Pe 2:5 you also, like living stones, are being built…
Rom 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brothers, on account of God’s mercy,…
Heb 13:16 And do not neglect to do good and to share…

well-pleasing to God.

Though directed to Paul’s material needs, the Philippians’ generosity was received by God as obedience that honored Him.

Heb 13:21 equip you with every good thing to do His will.…
Col 1:10 so that you may walk in a manner worthy of the Lord…
2Co 5:9 So we aspire to please Him, whether we are at home…

And my God

Paul points to the God he personally knows and serves. Though imprisoned and dependent on the gifts of the Philippian believers, he rests in God’s care and directs their confidence to the same faithful Lord.

Psa 63:1 A Psalm of David, when he was in the Wilderness…
Jhn 20:17 “Do not cling to Me,” Jesus said, “for I have not yet…”…
Psa 18:2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress, and my deliverer.…

The Philippians had given generously to support Paul’s ministry. Their gift would not impoverish them, for God would care for every genuine need, whether material or spiritual.
