Acts 5
Berean Study Bible

Ananias and Sapphira

Now a man named Ananias,

Ananias joined the believers who sold property to help meet the needs of the church. His name, meaning “God is gracious,” stands in sharp contrast to the deception that soon marked his actions.

Act 9:10-17 In Damascus there was a disciple named Ananias…
Act 22:12-16 There a man named Ananias, a devout observer…

together with his wife Sapphira,

Sapphira, whose name means “beautiful” or “sapphire,” knowingly participated with her husband in their plan. Their shared decision made both accountable for concealing the truth from the apostles and the congregation.

also sold a piece of property.

Like others in the Jerusalem church, they voluntarily sold land and brought money for the common needs of believers. Their sin was not retaining part of the proceeds, but falsely presenting a partial gift as though it were the entire amount.

With his wife’s full knowledge,

Sapphira knowingly joined Ananias in the plan, making their deception deliberate rather than accidental. Their agreement stood in sharp contrast to the honesty and shared devotion that marked the church.

Gen 3:6 When the woman saw that the tree was good for food…
1Ki 21:25 Surely there was never one like Ahab, who sold himself…

he kept back some of the proceeds for himself,

Ananias was free to retain part of the money from the sale, but he secretly withheld it while presenting his gift as though it were the entire amount. His sin was not keeping money, but lying about his sacrifice before God and the believers.

but brought a portion and laid it at the apostles’ feet.

He publicly imitated the generosity of others while concealing the truth. The offering appeared to be an act of full surrender for the church’s needs, but it was intended to gain honor without the integrity such generosity required.

Ananias, whose name means “God is gracious,” belonged to the Christian community that had been marked by voluntary generosity and mutual care.

how is it that Satan has filled your heart

Peter identified Ananias’s deception as yielding to Satan’s influence rather than acting in obedience to God.

and withhold some of the proceeds from the land?

Ananias was not required to sell his property or give all the money, but he and Sapphira falsely claimed to have given the entire amount. Their sin was deliberate dishonesty before God, not the retention of part of the proceeds.

Jos 7:1 The Israelites, however, acted unfaithfully…
Jas 5:4 Look, the wages you withheld from the workmen…
Mal 3:8 Will a man rob God? Yet you are robbing Me!…

Did it not belong to you before it was sold?

Ananias was under no command to sell his land. The believers shared generously, but their gifts remained voluntary. His ownership carried both freedom and responsibility before God.

1Ch 29:14 But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able……
Mat 20:15 Do I not have the right to do as I please?…

And after it was sold, was it not at your disposal?

The proceeds were also his to keep, give in part, or give in full. His sin was not withholding money but presenting a partial gift as though it were the entire amount.

Deu 14:26 Then you may spend the money on anything you desire:…
Act 2:45 Selling their possessions and goods, they shared…

How could you conceive such a deed in your heart?

Ananias had deliberately planned the deception. His outward action revealed a heart willing to seek the appearance of sacrifice while concealing the truth.

Pro 6:18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that run swiftly…
Gen 6:5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man…

You have not lied to men, but to God!”

Though Ananias attempted to deceive the apostles and the congregation, his lie was directed against God, who knew both the amount received and the intent behind the gift.

Psa 78:36-37 But they deceived Him with their mouths,…
Hos 7:13 Woe to them, for they have strayed from Me!…

On hearing these words,

Peter’s confrontation exposed Ananias’s deliberate deception. Though he was free to keep the property or retain part of its price, he chose to present a partial gift as though it were the whole amount, lying before God and the church.

Act 7:54 On hearing this, the members of the Sanhedrin were enraged,…
Luk 4:28 On hearing this, all the people in the synagogue…
Act 2:37 When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart…

Ananias fell down and died.

His immediate death was God’s judgment on hypocrisy and deceit at a crucial time in the life of the Jerusalem church. The judgment showed that the Holy Spirit was truly present among the believers and that falsehood could not be treated lightly.

His immediate burial reflects the customary practice of burying the dead promptly and underscores the solemn finality of Ananias’s judgment.

About three hours later

The delay gave the believers time to absorb Ananias’s sudden death and the seriousness of his deception. His burial had already taken place, but Sapphira had not yet learned what had happened.

Sapphira arrived separately and entered the gathering without knowing that her husband had died. Though she had acted with Ananias in arranging the deception, she would answer for her own words before God.

unaware of what had happened.

Her ignorance set the occasion for Peter to question her directly about the amount received for the land. She was given the opportunity to speak truthfully, yet she chose to uphold the lie she and Ananias had agreed upon.

“Tell me,” said Peter,

Peter confronted Sapphira about three hours after her husband’s death. As an apostle responsible for the church’s spiritual health, he gave her an opportunity to speak truthfully about the gift.

Jdg 16:6 So Delilah said to Samson, “Please tell me”…
1Sa 14:43 “Tell me what you have done,” Saul commanded him……

“is this the price you and your husband got for the land?”

The property had been theirs to keep or sell, and they were free to give any portion of the proceeds. Their sin was not withholding money but falsely presenting a partial gift as the full amount.

Act 4:37 sold a field he owned, brought the money…
Jer 32:9 So I bought the field in Anathoth from my cousin Hanamel…
Gen 23:16 Abraham agreed to Ephron’s terms and weighed out……

“Yes,” she answered,

Sapphira knowingly joined Ananias in the deception rather than correcting it. She bore personal responsibility for agreeing to lie before God and the church.

Luk 15:21 The son declared, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven…
1Jn 1:9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just…

“that is the price.”

Her deliberate falsehood confirmed the couple’s unified attempt to deceive the Holy Spirit. The judgment that followed showed the seriousness of hypocrisy and dishonesty within the newly established church.

Pro 20:14 “Worthless, worthless!” says the buyer, but on the way…

“How could you agree to test the Spirit of the Lord?”

Peter confronted Sapphira for joining Ananias in a deliberate lie about the money from their land. Their sin was not withholding part of the proceeds, which they were free to do, but pretending to give all while seeking honor for greater generosity. By acting as though God would not expose their deception, they challenged the Holy Spirit’s knowledge and authority.

Deu 6:16 Do not test the LORD your God as you tested Him at Massah.
Mat 4:7 Jesus replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your…
Act 15:10 Now then, why do you test God by placing…

Peter replied.

As an apostle and leading witness of Christ’s resurrection, Peter addressed the sin openly to preserve truth and holiness within the growing church. Sapphira had been given an opportunity to speak honestly after Ananias’s death, but she confirmed the deception.

Act 10:14 “No, Lord!” Peter answered. “I have never eaten…
Mat 14:28 “Lord, if it is You,” Peter replied, “command me to come…”…
Jhn 6:68 Simon Peter replied, “Lord, to whom would we go?…

“Look, the feet of the men who buried your husband are at the door,

Ananias had already died under God’s judgment and had been buried without delay, according to common practice. The men who carried him out had returned and were now standing nearby, showing that Sapphira’s judgment was immediate.

Jas 5:9 Do not complain about one another, brothers…
Mat 24:33 So also, when you see all these things, you will know…
Mrk 13:29 So also, when you see these things happening,…

and they will carry you out also.”

Peter announced that Sapphira would share her husband’s fate. Her death revealed the seriousness of deliberate deceit before God and established that the church was not merely a human community but belonged to the holy God.

Luk 7:12 As He approached the town gate, He saw a dead man…
2Ki 23:30 From Megiddo his servants carried his body in a chariot…
Gen 50:13 They carried him to the land of Canaan…

At that instant she fell down at his feet and died.

God’s judgment on Sapphira was immediate, as it had been on Ananias. Her death revealed the seriousness of deliberate deception within the church and of lying to the Holy Spirit. Falling at Peter’s feet, a posture often associated with humility, became instead the moment when her guilt was exposed and judgment completed.

Then the young men came in and, finding her dead,

The same young men who had buried Ananias returned and found Sapphira dead. Their presence confirms that no human action caused her death; it followed Peter’s declaration of God’s judgment. They carried out the necessary duty of caring for the body.

Sapphira was buried beside Ananias, united with him in the consequences of the sin they had planned together. The prompt burial followed Jewish custom and left the congregation with a solemn reminder that God required truthfulness and holiness among His people.

And great fear came over the whole church

God’s judgment of Ananias and Sapphira revealed the seriousness of deceit within the congregation. The believers recognized that the holy God was present among them and that hypocrisy could not be hidden from Him. Their deaths established the need for honesty, reverence, and integrity in the church’s earliest days.

The Apostles Heal Many

The apostles performed many signs and wonders among the people,

Their works openly confirmed that the risen Christ was continuing His ministry through those He had appointed. Healings and other miracles testified to the truth of their proclamation and demonstrated God’s power in Jerusalem, where the apostles had begun preaching Jesus’ death and resurrection.

and with one accord the believers gathered together

The growing body of believers remained united in worship, instruction, and public witness. Their shared devotion strengthened the church amid increasing attention from the people and hostility from the religious leaders.

This covered portico along the eastern side of the Temple complex provided a familiar public setting for teaching and gathering. By meeting there, the believers proclaimed Jesus in the heart of Jewish worship while showing that He is the fulfillment of God’s promises to Israel.

Jhn 10:23 Jesus was walking in the temple courts…

Although the people regarded them highly,

Although many people hesitated to join the believers openly, they held the apostles in high esteem. God’s public work through healings and other miracles, along with the church’s integrity, unity, and care for those in need, strengthened its reputation.

The judgment of Ananias and Sapphira had made clear that fellowship with the church could not be treated lightly. Those who lacked genuine faith feared to associate themselves casually with the believers, recognizing God’s holiness among them.

Yet more and more believers were brought to the Lord—

Despite opposition from the Sanhedrin, the church continued to grow as many in Jerusalem responded to the apostles’ witness, teaching, and public miracles. Those who believed were added to the Lord through faith in Jesus Christ, showing that God was advancing His work through the apostles and the power of the Holy Spirit.

The growing church included men and women alike, demonstrating that all who believed in Christ were received as members of His people. The Apostles Arrested and Freed

Then the high priest and all his associates,

Caiaphas and the leading members of the Sanhedrin exercised religious and political authority in Jerusalem. They viewed the apostles’ growing public ministry as a direct challenge to their leadership.

were filled with jealousy.

and arrested the apostles

Peter, John, and the other apostles had become prominent leaders of the growing church in Jerusalem. Their public proclamation of Jesus’ resurrection and lordship directly challenged the authority of the high priest and the Sadducees, who rejected the resurrection. Having failed to silence Peter and John earlier, the authorities now moved against the whole apostolic group.

and put them in the public jail.

The apostles were held under guard until the Sanhedrin could assemble and examine them. Their imprisonment was meant to restrain their preaching and discourage public support for the church. Instead, God intervened during the night, sending an angel to open the prison doors and command them to return to the temple courts and continue teaching the people.

The Apostles before the Sanhedrin

When the captain of the temple guard and the chief priests heard this account,

The captain of the temple guard, responsible for maintaining order in the temple courts, and the chief priests received the report that the apostles’ prison cell had been securely locked and guarded, yet the prisoners were gone. Their authority had been directly challenged by an event they could neither explain nor prevent.

Gamaliel’s Advice

When the Council members heard this,

So in the present case I advise you:

Gamaliel, a respected Pharisee and member of the Sanhedrin, urged restraint as the council considered how to deal with the apostles. Though the Pharisees generally opposed the church’s message, Gamaliel recognized that rash action could place the council in opposition to God. Paul later identified him as his teacher.

For if their purpose or endeavor is of human origin,

But if it is from God,

Gamaliel acknowledged that the apostles’ message might be the work of God rather than a human movement. Though he was not confessing faith in Christ, he recognized that God’s purposes cannot be overturned by the decisions of the Sanhedrin.

The apostles had continued preaching Jesus’ resurrection despite arrest, threats, and opposition. If God had commissioned them, no human authority could silence or destroy their work.

Isa 14:27 The LORD of Hosts has purposed, and who can thwart Him?…
Dan 4:35 All the peoples of the earth are counted as nothing…

Gamaliel warned the council that condemning the apostles could place them in direct opposition to God. The warning exposed the seriousness of their decision: rejecting the witnesses God had raised up to proclaim Christ was not merely resistance to men.

At this, they yielded to Gamaliel.

Gamaliel’s standing as a Pharisee and respected member of the Sanhedrin carried sufficient weight to restrain the council’s immediate plans. His counsel exposed differing responses within the Jewish leadership: while some sought to destroy the apostles, Gamaliel urged caution, recognizing that a work established by God could not be overthrown.
