Judges 6

Midian Oppresses Israel

Again the Israelites did evil in the sight of the LORD;

Israel returned to idolatry and covenant unfaithfulness after earlier deliverance. Their conduct was fully known to the LORD and judged by His righteous standard. Without faithful national leadership, the people repeatedly abandoned God and suffered the consequences of their rebellion.

so He delivered them into the hand of Midian

God permitted the Midianites, nomadic descendants of Abraham through Keturah, to dominate Israel as discipline for sin. Midianite raiding parties devastated Israel’s fields and livestock, leaving many Israelites impoverished and forced into hiding. Their oppression revealed the bondage that followed Israel’s rejection of the LORD.

for seven years,

The oppression continued for a full appointed period, giving Israel time to recognize its sin and seek the LORD’s mercy. Israel’s distress prepared the way for God to raise Gideon as deliverer, pointing forward to Christ’s final deliverance from sin and its power.

and the hand of Midian prevailed against Israel.

Midian, descended from Abraham through Keturah, had become a hostile force against Israel. Their raids brought Israel under severe oppression for seven years, part of the judgment that followed Israel’s idolatry and covenant unfaithfulness. The nation’s weakness before Midian showed the consequences of abandoning the LORD.

Because of the Midianites, the Israelites prepared shelters for themselves in the mountains, caves, and strongholds.

Unable to defend their homes and crops, the Israelites withdrew into the hill country and concealed places throughout the land. Fear of Midianite attacks drove them from ordinary life into survival and isolation, revealing how completely the enemy had subdued them.

Israel’s enemies waited until the land had been cultivated and the harvest was near, turning the season that should have supplied food and security into a time of fear and loss. Their raids exposed the nation’s vulnerability after abandoning the Lord.

the Midianites, Amalekites, and other people of the east

Midianite and Amalekite raiders joined with other desert peoples in a large coalition against Israel. The Midianites, related to Abraham through Keturah, and the Amalekites, Israel’s longstanding enemies, used their mobility and numbers to overwhelm the settled farming communities.

They repeatedly entered the land to seize livestock and destroy crops, leaving Israel impoverished and unable to resist. The oppression was both military and economic, driving many Israelites from their homes into mountain shelters until the Lord raised Gideon to deliver them.

Midianites, Amalekites, and other eastern peoples spread across the land during harvest time, extending their raids from the eastern regions to Gaza on Canaan’s southwestern border. Their reach showed that Israel’s distress was widespread and that no part of the land was secure.

For the Midianites came with their livestock and their tents

Descended from Abraham through Keturah, the Midianites were distant relatives of Israel. Their nomadic way of life enabled them to travel with their households, animals, and supplies, turning seasonal raids into large-scale invasions.

Israel was greatly impoverished by Midian,

Midianite raiders repeatedly entered Israel during harvest, stripping the land of grain, livestock, and other resources. Their attacks reduced many Israelites to hiding in caves and strongholds, leaving the nation unable to sustain itself. Israel’s material ruin exposed the seriousness of its spiritual rebellion and idolatry.

Now when the Israelites cried out to the LORD

Israel’s suffering under Midian drove them to seek God after years of disobedience and idolatry. Their cry marks the familiar pattern in Judges: rebellion brought oppression, and distress led the people to appeal to the LORD for help. God had not abandoned His covenant people, though He would first confront their sin before providing deliverance.

because of Midian,

Midianite raiders repeatedly invaded Israel, destroying crops, seizing livestock, and forcing many Israelites into caves and mountain strongholds. Descended from Abraham through Keturah, the Midianites had become a powerful enemy in the region. The defeat of the Canaanite peoples was God’s work, fulfilling His promise to give Israel the land. Their victories were not secured by military power alone but by the Lord’s judgment on the nations and faithfulness to His covenant.

The LORD turned to him and said,

The LORD personally addressed Gideon in the midst of Israel’s oppression by Midian. Though Gideon saw himself as insignificant, God’s attention rested on him and marked him for a decisive role in Israel’s deliverance.

Midianite raiders had repeatedly stripped Israel’s land and left the people impoverished. Gideon’s assignment was to lead Israel against this enemy and end the oppression that had followed the nation’s disobedience.

Exo 3:8 I have come down to rescue them from the hand of Egyptians…

Israel’s victory over Midian will be decisive and complete. Though the Midianite force is overwhelming, God will defeat them through Gideon in a way that makes clear the deliverance comes from the Lord rather than human strength.

that it is You speaking with me.

Gideon wants certainty that the message comes from the Lord rather than from his own fears or a human messenger. The sign that follows confirms the Angel’s divine authority and strengthens Gideon for his calling.

Exo 33:11 Thus the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, …
1Sa 3:10 Then the LORD came and stood there, calling as before,…

Please do not depart from this place until I return to You.

Gideon asks the Angel of the LORD to remain while he prepares a gift, seeking assurance that this encounter is truly from God. His caution continues throughout his calling, yet he responds with reverence rather than dismissal. In a culture where hospitality carried great importance, Gideon’s request also honors his guest.

Exo 24:14 And he said to the elders, “Wait here for us…
1Sa 13:8 And Saul waited seven days for the time appointed…
Luk 24:28-29 As they approached the village where they were headed,…

Let me bring my offering and set it before You.”

Gideon prepares an offering suitable for a sacred visitor, acknowledging the Angel’s authority and seeking to honor Him. The offering anticipates the sacrifice that will confirm the Lord’s acceptance of Gideon and His commission to deliver Israel.

Jdg 13:15-19 “Please stay here,” Manoah said to the angel of the LORD…
Gen 18:6-8 So Abraham hurried into the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick!…
1Ki 17:13-15 “Do not be afraid,” Elijah said to her…

And the LORD said, “I will stay until you return.”

The LORD patiently grants Gideon’s request. His willingness to wait confirms His purpose for Gideon and shows that the call to rescue Israel rests on God’s presence and authority, not Gideon’s confidence.

Gen 12:6-7 Abram traveled through the land as far as the site…

And the angel of God said to him,

God continued to address Gideon through His angel, directing the encounter and confirming that Gideon’s offering was to be received as worship.

Gen 31:11-13 In that dream the angel of God said to me, ‘Jacob!’…
Exo 3:2-4 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him……

“Take the meat and the unleavened bread,

Gideon’s provisions became an offering to the Lord. The meal he had prepared for his visitor was set apart for a sacred purpose.

Exo 12:8-11 They are to eat the meat that night, roasted over the fire…
Gen 18:6-8 So Abraham hurried into the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick!…

lay them on this rock,

The rock became the place of sacrifice, marking the location where God revealed His presence and called Gideon to deliver Israel.

Jos 8:30-31 At that time Joshua built an altar on Mount Ebal to the LORD…
1Ki 18:30-32 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.”…

and pour out the broth.”

The broth was poured out rather than kept for food, showing that the entire offering belonged to the Lord.

1Ki 18:33-35 Next, he arranged the wood, cut up the bull…
Exo 29:40-41 With the first lamb offer a tenth of an ephah…

And Gideon did so.

Gideon obeyed the angel’s command, beginning to respond in faith to God’s call despite his earlier doubts.

Gen 22:3 So Abraham got up early the next morning,…
1Ki 17:5 So Elijah did what the LORD had told him,…

Then the angel of the LORD extended the tip of the staff that was in his hand

The angel acts with divine authority, using the staff to initiate a visible sign for Gideon. The staff recalls God’s use of appointed instruments to display His power and confirm His purposes.

Exo 14:16 And as for you, lift up your staff and stretch out your hand…
Exo 4:17 But take this staff in your hand so you can perform signs…
Exo 17:5-6 And the LORD said to Moses, “Walk on ahead of the people”…

and touched the meat and the unleavened bread.

Gideon’s gift, prepared as an offering, is set apart by the angel’s touch. The meat and unleavened bread become an acceptable sacrifice before the LORD.

Lev 7:12-15 If he offers it in thanksgiving, then with the sacrifice…
Exo 12:8-10 They are to eat the meat that night, roasted over the fire…
Exo 29:23-25 along with one loaf of bread, one cake of bread…

And fire flared from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread.

Fire from the rock demonstrates God’s presence and acceptance of Gideon’s offering. The rock serves as an altar by God’s command, showing that the LORD Himself receives the sacrifice and confirms the messenger’s identity.

1Ki 18:38 Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the sacrifice,…
Lev 9:24 Fire came out from the presence of the LORD…
2Ch 7:1 When Solomon had finished praying, fire came down…

Then the angel of the LORD vanished from his sight.

Having given the sign, the angel departs suddenly. Gideon is left with certain evidence that he has encountered the LORD and that the calling placed upon him carries divine authority.

Luk 24:31 Then their eyes were opened and they recognized Jesus…
Jdg 13:20-21 When the flame went up from the altar to the sky…
Act 1:9 He had said this, they watched as He was taken up…

When Gideon realized that it was the angel of the LORD,

Gideon understood that he had been visited by the LORD Himself in visible form. The encounter confirmed that his calling to deliver Israel came with divine authority and power.

Jdg 13:21-22 And when the angel of the LORD did not appear again…
Exo 3:2-6 There the angel of the LORD appeared to him……
Gen 16:7-13 Now the angel of the LORD found Hagar by a spring of water…

he said, “Oh no, Lord GOD!

Overcome by fear, Gideon responded with the awe common to those who recognized God’s holy presence. He knew his own weakness and the danger of standing before the living God.

Isa 6:5 Then I said: “Woe is me, for I am ruined,…
Luk 5:8 When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees.…
Rev 1:17 When I saw Him, I fell at His feet like a dead man.…

I have seen the angel of the LORD face to face!”

Gideon believed that such a direct encounter could mean death. Yet the LORD had appeared not to destroy him, but to commission and strengthen him for Israel’s deliverance.

Gen 32:30 So Jacob named the place Peniel, saying…
Exo 33:11 Thus the LORD would speak to Moses face to face, …
Exo 33:20 But He added, “You cannot see My face, for no one can see…

But the LORD said to him,

The LORD addressed Gideon personally after the angel’s departure and Gideon’s fearful realization that he had encountered the angel of the LORD. God’s words confirmed that Gideon had been spared and prepared him for the task of delivering Israel from Midian.

Gen 17:1 When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD appeared…
Exo 3:12 “I will surely be with you,” God said, “and this will be…”…
1Ki 3:5 One night at Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream,…

“Peace be with you.

God gave Gideon assurance in the midst of his alarm. The peace promised was not merely relief from immediate fear but the security of God’s favor and presence as Gideon faced the calling before him.

Jhn 20:19 It was the first day of the week, and that very evening,…
Jhn 20:21 Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent Me,”…
Jhn 20:26 Eight days later, His disciples were once again inside…

Do not be afraid,

Gideon had reason to fear, believing that his encounter with the angel of the LORD would bring death. The command removed that fear and called him to trust the God who had chosen him.

Mat 28:5 But the angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid,…
Luk 1:13 But the angel said to him, “Do not be afraid, Zechariah,…
Luk 1:30 So the angel told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary,…

for you will not die.”

The LORD preserved Gideon and made clear that the encounter was not for judgment but for commission. Gideon’s life would be used in God’s deliverance of Israel from Midianite oppression.

Psa 118:17 I will not die, but I will live and proclaim…
Jhn 11:26 And everyone who lives and believes in Me will…
Jhn 8:51 Truly, truly, I tell you, if anyone keeps My word…

So Gideon built an altar to the LORD there

Gideon marked the place where the Angel of the LORD appeared to him and assured him that he would not die. The altar commemorated God’s presence and the commission Gideon had received to deliver Israel from Midian.

Jos 8:30-31 At that time Joshua built an altar on Mount Ebal to the LORD…
Deu 27:5-6 Moreover, you are to build there an altar to the LORD…
Gen 12:7-8 Then the LORD appeared to Abram and said,…

and called it The LORD Is Peace.

Though Israel remained under oppression, Gideon received peace from the LORD after his fear was removed. The name testified that the God who sent him was able to give peace in the midst of danger and conflict.

2Th 3:16 may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace.…
Eph 2:14 For He Himself is our peace, who has made the two one…
Jhn 14:27 Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.…

To this day it stands in Ophrah of the Abiezrites.

The altar remained at Ophrah, Gideon’s home among the Abiezrite clan of Manasseh, as a lasting witness to the LORD’s appearance and His call upon Gideon.

Jdg 8:32 Later, Gideon son of Joash died at a ripe old age…
Jos 4:9 Joshua also set up twelve stones in the middle…
Jos 17:2 So this allotment was for the rest of the descendants…

Gideon Destroys Baal’s Altar

On that very night the LORD said to Gideon,

God acted without delay, giving Gideon a private command that would begin Israel’s deliverance at its spiritual root. Before confronting Midian, Gideon had to confront the idolatry tolerated within his own household and town.

Act 18:9 One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision:…
1Ki 3:5 One night at Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream,…
Gen 46:2 And that night God spoke to Israel in a vision:…

“Take your father’s young bull

Joash’s bull was part of the family’s wealth and may have been connected to the local Baal shrine. Gideon’s obedience would require him to act against his father’s established practices.

Exo 29:1 Now this is what you are to do to consecrate Aaron…
Num 7:15 one young bull, one ram, and one male lamb a year old…
Lev 4:3 If the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt on the people…

and a second bull seven years old,

The mature bull was to serve as the sacrifice after the altar of Baal was destroyed. Its age corresponded to the years of Midianite oppression, marking the end of Israel’s humiliation and the beginning of God’s deliverance.

1Ki 18:23 Get two bulls for us. Let the prophets of Baal choose…
Lev 9:2 He said to Aaron, “Take for yourself a young bull…
Exo 32:4 He took the gold from their hands, and with an engraving…

tear down your father’s altar to Baal,

The altar belonged to Gideon’s father, showing how deeply Baal worship had entered Israelite life. Gideon was commanded to destroy the false worship supported by his own family rather than compromise with it.

Deu 12:3 Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars,…
Exo 34:13 Rather, you must tear down their altars,…
2Ki 11:18 So all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal…

and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.

The Asherah pole stood beside Baal’s altar as part of Canaanite fertility worship. Removing both objects cleared the site of idolatry and prepared it for worship directed to the LORD alone.

2Ki 18:4 He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars…
1Ki 15:13 He also removed his grandmother Maacah from her position…
Deu 7:5 Instead, this is what you are to do to them:…

Then build a proper altar to the LORD your God

Gideon was to replace the altar of Baal with an altar built for the LORD according to His command. Israel’s deliverance began with the removal of idolatry and the restoration of covenant worship.

Exo 20:24-25 You are to make for Me an altar of earth…
Deu 12:5-6 Instead, you must seek the place the LORD your God…
1Ki 18:30-32 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.”…

on the top of this stronghold.

The place that had been used for false worship would now publicly belong to the LORD. Gideon’s obedience declared God’s authority over his household and community.

Deu 27:4-6 And when you have crossed the Jordan, set up these stones…
Jos 8:30-31 At that time Joshua built an altar on Mount Ebal to the LORD…
1Ki 18:33-35 Next, he arranged the wood, cut up the bull…

And with the wood of the Asherah pole you cut down,

The destroyed Asherah pole, a symbol of Canaanite fertility worship, would provide fuel for the sacrifice, showing that what had been devoted to false gods was powerless before the LORD.

2Ki 23:14 He smashed the sacred pillars to pieces,…
Exo 34:13 Rather, you must tear down their altars,…
Deu 12:3 Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars,…

take the second bull and offer it as a burnt offering.”

The bull was offered wholly to God, marking repentance, atonement, and renewed allegiance to Him. Before Gideon could lead Israel against Midian, he had to obey God within his own father’s household.

1Ki 18:23-24 Get two bulls for us. Let the prophets of Baal choose…
1Ki 18:36-38 At the time of the evening sacrifice, Elijah…
Lev 1:3-9 If his offering is a burnt offering from the herd,…

So Gideon took ten of his servants

Gideon had sufficient standing within his father’s household to direct a group of servants in carrying out the task. Taking ten men also provided the help needed to tear down the altar, cut down the Asherah pole, and prepare the sacrifice God required.

Rut 4:2 Then Boaz took ten of the elders of the city…
Gen 22:3 So Abraham got up early the next morning,…
1Sa 25:13 And David said to his men, “Strap on your swords!”…

and did as the LORD had told him.

Gideon obeyed the command to remove the false worship that had corrupted his own household and town. Before leading Israel against Midian, he was required to confront idolatry at home.

Gen 6:22 So Noah did everything precisely as God had commanded him.
Exo 40:16 Moses did everything just as the LORD had commanded him.
1Ki 17:5 So Elijah did what the LORD had told him,…

But because he was too afraid of his father’s household and the men of the city,

Gideon understood that destroying Baal’s altar would provoke anger from those committed to its worship, including members of his own family. His fear did not prevent obedience, but it shaped how he carried out the command.

Pro 29:25 The fear of man is a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD…
Mat 10:36 A man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’
Jhn 12:42-43 Nevertheless, many of the leaders believed in Him.…

he did it by night rather than in the daytime.

Acting under cover of darkness avoided immediate interference and allowed the work to be completed. Gideon’s obedience, though marked by caution, began the removal of Israel’s idolatry and prepared him for the larger deliverance God would accomplish through him.

Jhn 3:2 He came to Jesus at night and said, “Rabbi,…
Act 9:25 One night, however, his disciples took him…
Neh 2:12 I set out at night with a few men. I did not tell anyone…

When the men of the city got up in the morning,

By morning, the men of Ophrah discovered what Gideon had done during the night. His actions openly challenged the community’s accepted worship.

1Sa 5:3-4 When the people of Ashdod got up early the next morning,…
2Ki 19:35 And that very night the angel of the LORD went out…
Exo 14:27 So Moses stretched out his hand over the sea,…

there was Baal’s altar torn down,

Gideon had destroyed the altar his father maintained for the local worship of Baal. The altar showed how deeply Canaanite religion had become established among Israelites who were called to worship the Lord alone.

2Ki 10:27 They also demolished the sacred pillar of Baal.…
2Ki 11:18 So all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal…
2Ki 23:15 He even pulled down the altar at Bethel,…

with the Asherah pole cut down beside it

The wooden image associated with Baal worship had also been removed. Gideon’s actions eliminated both objects of idolatry and exposed the conflict between loyalty to the Lord and the religious practices embraced by the town.

Deu 7:5 Instead, this is what you are to do to them:…
1Ki 15:13 He also removed his grandmother Maacah from her position…
2Ki 23:6-7 He brought the Asherah pole from the house of the LORD…

and the second bull offered up on the newly built altar.

The bull Gideon had been commanded to sacrifice had been offered to the Lord on an altar built in place of Baal’s. The sacrifice marked the restoration of worship directed to the true God.

1Ki 18:30-39 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come near to me.”…
2Sa 24:25 And there he built an altar to the LORD and…
Num 23:1-4 Then Balaam said to Balak, “Build for me seven altars here,…

“Who did this?”

The destruction of Baal’s altar and the Asherah pole shocked the men of Ophrah because these pagan practices had become accepted within the community. Their concern likely included fear that Baal would punish the town for the insult.

Jos 22:16-18 This is what the whole congregation of the LORD says:…
Deu 13:14 then you must inquire, investigate,…
1Sa 14:43 “Tell me what you have done,” Saul commanded him……

2Sa 11:18 Joab sent to David a full account of the battle
Est 2:22 When Mordecai learned of the plot, he reported it……

“Gideon son of Joash did it.”

Gideon’s actions exposed the idolatry present even in his own household. By obeying God’s command, he openly began the work to which he had been called: turning Israel from Baal and leading them toward deliverance from Midian.

Jos 7:18-21 And he had the family of Zabdi come forward man by man,…
2Sa 12:7 Then Nathan said to David, “You are that man!…
1Sa 17:55-58 As Saul had watched David going out to confront…

Then the men of the city said to Joash,

The townsmen, likely including the elders and leading men of Ophrah, spoke as a united community. Joash’s household held enough influence that they came directly to him concerning Gideon’s actions.

Deu 13:12-15 If, regarding one of the cities the LORD your God…
Deu 17:2-5 If a man or woman among you in one of the towns…

“Bring out your son.

They demanded that Joash surrender Gideon for public judgment. Gideon’s destruction of the altar had challenged the religious practices accepted by the town.

1Ki 21:10-13 But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them testify,…
Deu 21:20-21 “This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious;”…

He must die,

The people regarded the removal of Baal’s altar as an offense deserving death. Their response reveals how deeply Baal worship had taken root among Israelites during the period of the judges.

Deu 13:9-10 Instead, you must surely kill him. Your hand must be…
Deu 17:5 you must bring out to your gates the man or woman…

because he has torn down Baal’s altar

Baal was worshiped by the Canaanites as a god of storm, rain, and fertility. Gideon’s act obeyed God’s command and confronted Israel’s compromise with idolatry.

1Ki 19:10 I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,…
2Ki 10:27 They also demolished the sacred pillar of Baal.…

and cut down the Asherah pole beside it.”

The Asherah pole was connected with the worship of the Canaanite goddess Asherah and stood beside Baal’s altar as part of the local cult. By destroying both, Gideon removed the objects of false worship from his father’s property.

Deu 7:5 Instead, this is what you are to do to them:…
2Ki 18:4 He removed the high places, shattered the sacred pillars…

But Joash said to all who stood against him,

Joash, Gideon’s father, confronted the townsmen who demanded Gideon’s death for destroying Baal’s altar. His willingness to defend Gideon showed both his influence in the town and the weakness of their devotion to Baal.

1Sa 14:45 But the people said to Saul, “Must Jonathan die—…
Pro 24:11-12 Rescue those being led away to death, and restrain…

“Are you contending for Baal?

Joash exposed the contradiction of men acting as defenders for a deity they claimed was powerful.

1Ki 18:21 Then Elijah approached all the people and said,…
Jdg 10:14 Go and cry out to the gods you have chosen.…

Are you trying to save him?

If Baal required human protection, he could not be worthy of worship.

Isa 45:20 Come, gather together, and draw near, you fugitives…
Isa 46:7 They lift it to their shoulder and carry it along;…

Whoever pleads his case will be put to death by morning!

Joash turned the threat back on those seeking to punish Gideon, preventing the crowd from carrying out its plan.

Deu 13:6-11 If your very own brother, or your son or daughter,…
Deu 17:2-5 If a man or woman among you in one of the towns…

If Baal is a god, let him contend for himself

Baal was given the opportunity to demonstrate his supposed power by judging Gideon without human assistance.

Jer 2:28 But where are the gods you made for yourselves?…
Psa 115:4-8 Their idols are silver and gold, made by the hands of men.…

with the one who has torn down his altar.”

Gideon’s destruction of the altar marked an open break with idolatry and began his public role in delivering Israel from oppression.

2Ki 23:15 He even pulled down the altar at Bethel,…
Deu 12:3 Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars,…

So on that day Gideon was called Jerubbaal,

Gideon’s new name, Jerubbaal, meaning “Let Baal contend,” marked his public break with Baal worship and identified him as the man who had opposed the idol in his own town.

Jdg 8:35 They did not show kindness to the house of Jerubbaal…
Jdg 8:29 and he—Jerubbaal son of Joash—returned home…
1Sa 12:11 So the LORD sent Jerubbaal, Barak, Jephthah, and Samuel…

that is to say, “Let Baal contend with him,”

The name challenged Baal to defend his altar and honor. Baal’s silence exposed the helplessness of an idol before the God of Israel.

1Ki 18:24 Then you may call on the name of your god,…
1Ki 18:27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them, saying, “Shout louder,…
1Ki 18:39 When all the people saw this, they fell facedown…

because he had torn down Baal’s altar.

By destroying the altar, Gideon obeyed God’s command and began confronting the idolatry that had drawn Israel away from the Lord.

2Ki 11:18 So all the people of the land went to the temple of Baal…
2Ch 34:4 Then in his presence the altars of the Baals were torn down…
Deu 12:3 Tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars,…

The Sign of the Fleece

Then all the Midianites, Amalekites, and other people of the east gathered together,

The Midianites, Amalekites, and other eastern peoples formed a large coalition against Israel. These desert raiders repeatedly plundered Israel’s fields, livestock, and settlements, leaving the Israelites impoverished.

crossed over the Jordan,

2Sa 17:22 So David and all the people with him got up…

Gideon sent messengers throughout Manasseh,

2Sa 5:1 Then all the tribes of Israel came to David at Hebron…

Then Gideon said to God,

Gideon spoke to the LORD after receiving His call to deliver Israel from Midian. Though chosen as Israel’s judge, he remained aware of his weakness and sought assurance concerning the task before him.

Hos 14:5 I will be like the dew to Israel; he will blossom…
Mic 5:7 Then the remnant of Jacob will be like dew from the LORD,…

then I will know that You are going to save Israel by my hand,

Gideon understood that Israel’s deliverance would come from God, though he had been chosen to lead the battle. His uncertainty reflected the weight of confronting a powerful enemy with Israel weakened and oppressed.

1Sa 23:4 Once again, David inquired of the LORD…
Jdg 7:15 When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation,…
