Brothers and sisters, my heart's desire and prayer to God for the Israelites is that they may be saved.1Ἀδελφοί μὲν εὐδοκία τῆς ἐμῆς καρδίας καὶ δέησις πρὸς τὸν Θεὸν ὑπὲρ αὐτῶν εἰς σωτηρίαν
For I can testify about them that they are zealous for God, but their zeal is not based on knowledge.2μαρτυρῶ γὰρ αὐτοῖς ὅτι ζῆλον Θεοῦ ἔχουσιν ἀλλ’ οὐ κατ’ ἐπίγνωσιν
Since they did not know the righteousness of God and sought to establish their own, they did not submit to God's righteousness.3ἀγνοοῦντες γὰρ τὴν τοῦ Θεοῦ δικαιοσύνην καὶ τὴν ἰδίαν [δικαιοσύνην] ζητοῦντες στῆσαι τῇ δικαιοσύνῃ τοῦ Θεοῦ οὐχ ὑπετάγησαν
Christ is the culmination of the law so that there may be righteousness for everyone who believes.4τέλος γὰρ νόμου Χριστὸς εἰς δικαιοσύνην παντὶ τῷ πιστεύοντι
Moses writes this about the righteousness that is by the law: "The person who does these things will live by them."5Μωϋσῆς γὰρ γράφει ὅτι τὴν δικαιοσύνην τὴν ἐκ ‹τοῦ› νόμου [ὅτι] ποιήσας [αὐτὰ] ἄνθρωπος ζήσεται ἐν αὐτῇ
But the righteousness that is by faith says: "Do not say in your heart, 'Who will ascend into heaven?'" (that is, to bring Christ down)6 δὲ ἐκ πίστεως δικαιοσύνη οὕτως λέγει Μὴ εἴπῃς ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ σου Τίς ἀναβήσεται εἰς τὸν οὐρανόν τοῦτ’ ἔστιν Χριστὸν καταγαγεῖν
"or 'Who will descend into the deep?'" (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead).7 Τίς καταβήσεται εἰς τὴν ἄβυσσον τοῦτ’ ἔστιν Χριστὸν ἐκ νεκρῶν ἀναγαγεῖν
But what does it say? "The word is near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart," that is, the message concerning faith that we proclaim:8Ἀλλὰ τί λέγει Ἐγγύς σου τὸ ῥῆμά ἐστιν ἐν τῷ στόματί σου καὶ ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ σου τοῦτ’ ἔστιν τὸ ῥῆμα τῆς πίστεως κηρύσσομεν
If you declare with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.9ὅτι ἐὰν ὁμολογήσῃς (τὸ ῥῆμα) ἐν τῷ στόματί σου (ὅτι) Κύριον Ἰησοῦν καὶ πιστεύσῃς ἐν τῇ καρδίᾳ σου ὅτι Θεὸς αὐτὸν ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν σωθήσῃ
For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.10καρδίᾳ γὰρ πιστεύεται εἰς δικαιοσύνην στόματι δὲ ὁμολογεῖται εἰς σωτηρίαν
As Scripture says, "Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame."11Λέγει γὰρ γραφή Πᾶς πιστεύων ἐπ’ αὐτῷ οὐ καταισχυνθήσεται
For there is no difference between Jew and Gentile--the same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him,12οὐ γάρ ἐστιν διαστολὴ Ἰουδαίου τε καὶ Ἕλληνος γὰρ αὐτὸς Κύριος πάντων πλουτῶν εἰς πάντας τοὺς ἐπικαλουμένους αὐτόν
for, "Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."13Πᾶς γὰρ ὃς ἂν ἐπικαλέσηται τὸ ὄνομα Κυρίου σωθήσεται
How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?14Πῶς οὖν ἐπικαλέσωνται εἰς ὃν οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν πῶς δὲ πιστεύσωσιν οὗ οὐκ ἤκουσαν πῶς δὲ ἀκούσωσιν χωρὶς κηρύσσοντος
And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: "How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!"15πῶς δὲ κηρύξωσιν ἐὰν μὴ ἀποσταλῶσιν καθὼς* γέγραπται Ὡς ὡραῖοι οἱ πόδες ⧼τῶν εὐαγγελιζομένων εἰρήνην⧽ τῶν εὐαγγελιζομένων ‹τὰ› ἀγαθά
But not all the Israelites accepted the good news. For Isaiah says, "Lord, who has believed our message?"16Ἀλλ’ οὐ πάντες ὑπήκουσαν τῷ εὐαγγελίῳ Ἠσαΐας γὰρ λέγει Κύριε τίς ἐπίστευσεν τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν
Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.17ἄρα πίστις ἐξ ἀκοῆς δὲ ἀκοὴ διὰ ῥήματος Χριστοῦ
But I ask: Did they not hear? Of course they did: "Their voice has gone out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world."18Ἀλλὰ λέγω μὴ οὐκ ἤκουσαν μενοῦνγε Εἰς πᾶσαν τὴν γῆν ἐξῆλθεν φθόγγος αὐτῶν καὶ εἰς τὰ πέρατα τῆς οἰκουμένης τὰ ῥήματα αὐτῶν
Again I ask: Did Israel not understand? First, Moses says, "I will make you envious by those who are not a nation; I will make you angry by a nation that has no understanding."19Ἀλλὰ λέγω μὴ Ἰσραὴλ οὐκ ἔγνω πρῶτος Μωϋσῆς λέγει Ἐγὼ παραζηλώσω ὑμᾶς ἐπ’ οὐκ ἔθνει ἐπ’ ἔθνει ἀσυνέτῳ παροργιῶ ὑμᾶς
And Isaiah boldly says, "I was found by those who did not seek me; I revealed myself to those who did not ask for me."20Ἠσαΐας δὲ ἀποτολμᾷ καὶ λέγει Εὑρέθην ‹ἐν› τοῖς ἐμὲ μὴ ζητοῦσιν ἐμφανὴς ἐγενόμην τοῖς ἐμὲ μὴ ἐπερωτῶσιν
But concerning Israel he says, "All day long I have held out my hands to a disobedient and obstinate people."21Πρὸς δὲ τὸν Ἰσραὴλ λέγει Ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἐξεπέτασα τὰς χεῖράς μου πρὸς λαὸν ἀπειθοῦντα καὶ ἀντιλέγοντα
