From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?1Πόθεν πόλεμοι καὶ πόθεν μάχαι ἐν ὑμῖν οὐκ ἐντεῦθεν ἐκ τῶν ἡδονῶν ὑμῶν τῶν στρατευομένων ἐν τοῖς μέλεσιν ὑμῶν
Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.2ἐπιθυμεῖτε καὶ οὐκ ἔχετε φονεύετε καὶ ζηλοῦτε καὶ οὐ δύνασθε ἐπιτυχεῖν μάχεσθε καὶ πολεμεῖτε οὐκ ἔχετε διὰ τὸ μὴ αἰτεῖσθαι ὑμᾶς
Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.3αἰτεῖτε καὶ οὐ λαμβάνετε διότι κακῶς αἰτεῖσθε ἵνα ἐν ταῖς ἡδοναῖς ὑμῶν δαπανήσητε
Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.4Μοιχαλίδες οὐκ οἴδατε ὅτι φιλία τοῦ κόσμου ἔχθρα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστιν ὃς ἐὰν οὖν βουληθῇ φίλος εἶναι τοῦ κόσμου ἐχθρὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ καθίσταται
Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?5 δοκεῖτε ὅτι κενῶς γραφὴ λέγει Πρὸς φθόνον ἐπιποθεῖ τὸ πνεῦμα κατῴκισεν ἐν ἡμῖν
But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.6μείζονα δὲ δίδωσιν χάριν διὸ λέγει Θεὸς ὑπερηφάνοις ἀντιτάσσεται ταπεινοῖς δὲ δίδωσιν χάριν
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.7Ὑποτάγητε οὖν τῷ Θεῷ ἀντίστητε δὲ τῷ διαβόλῳ καὶ φεύξεται ἀφ’ ὑμῶν
Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.8ἐγγίσατε τῷ Θεῷ καὶ ἐγγιεῖ* ὑμῖν καθαρίσατε χεῖρας ἁμαρτωλοί καὶ ἁγνίσατε καρδίας δίψυχοι
Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.9ταλαιπωρήσατε καὶ πενθήσατε καὶ κλαύσατε γέλως ὑμῶν εἰς πένθος μετατραπήτω καὶ χαρὰ εἰς κατήφειαν
Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.10ταπεινώθητε ἐνώπιον Κυρίου καὶ ὑψώσει ὑμᾶς
Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge.11Μὴ καταλαλεῖτε ἀλλήλων ἀδελφοί καταλαλῶν ἀδελφοῦ κρίνων τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ καταλαλεῖ νόμου καὶ κρίνει νόμον εἰ δὲ νόμον κρίνεις οὐκ εἶ ποιητὴς νόμου ἀλλὰ κριτής
There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who art thou that judgest another?12εἷς ἐστιν [ὁ] νομοθέτης καὶ κριτής δυνάμενος σῶσαι καὶ ἀπολέσαι σὺ δὲ τίς εἶ κρίνων τὸν πλησίον
Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain:13Ἄγε νῦν οἱ λέγοντες Σήμερον αὔριον πορευσόμεθα εἰς τήνδε τὴν πόλιν καὶ ποιήσομεν ἐκεῖ ἐνιαυτὸν καὶ ἐμπορευσόμεθα καὶ κερδήσομεν
Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.14οἵτινες οὐκ ἐπίστασθε ‹τὸ› τῆς αὔριον ποία ζωὴ ὑμῶν ἀτμὶς γάρ ἐστε πρὸς ὀλίγον φαινομένη ἔπειτα καὶ ἀφανιζομένη
For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.15Ἀντὶ τοῦ λέγειν ὑμᾶς Ἐὰν Κύριος θελήσῃ καὶ ζήσομεν καὶ ποιήσομεν τοῦτο ἐκεῖνο
But now ye rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.16νῦν δὲ καυχᾶσθε ἐν ταῖς ἀλαζονείαις* ὑμῶν πᾶσα καύχησις τοιαύτη πονηρά ἐστιν
Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.17εἰδότι οὖν καλὸν ποιεῖν καὶ μὴ ποιοῦντι ἁμαρτία αὐτῷ ἐστιν
