Amnon and Tamar

After some time,

After some time had passed, the narrative shifts from David’s wars to the judgment unfolding within his own household.

2Sa 10:1 Some time later, the king of the Ammonites died…
2Sa 11:1 In the spring, at the time when kings march out to war,…

David’s son Amnon

Amnon was David’s firstborn and held a prominent place among the king’s sons, yet his actions revealed corrupt desire and disregard for God’s law.

2Sa 3:2 And sons were born to David in Hebron: His firstborn…
1Ch 3:1 These were the sons of David who were born to him in Hebron:…

fell in love with Tamar,

Amnon’s feelings were not faithful love but selfish lust. Tamar, whose name means “palm tree,” was vulnerable because of her place within the royal household and the expectations placed upon her.

Jdg 16:4 Some time later, Samson fell in love with a woman…
Gen 34:3 And his soul was drawn to Dinah, the daughter of Jacob.…

the beautiful sister of David’s son Absalom.

Tamar’s beauty became the occasion for Amnon’s sinful pursuit. As Absalom’s sister, her suffering would lead to lasting division and violence within David’s family.

1Ch 3:9 These were all the sons of David, besides…

Amnon was sick with frustration over his sister Tamar,

Amnon, David’s firstborn, allowed forbidden desire for his half-sister to consume him. Though he was heir to the throne, his position did not restrain his sinful fixation, which would soon bring shame and violence into David’s household.

1Ki 21:4 So Ahab went to his palace, sullen and angry…
Pro 6:25-29 Do not lust in your heart for her beauty…

for she was a virgin,

Tamar was the unmarried daughter of David and Maacah, and her purity and royal status placed her under special protection. Amnon’s desire threatened not only Tamar’s honor but also the peace and reputation of the king’s family.

Deu 22:28-29 If a man encounters a virgin who is not pledged in marriage…

and it seemed implausible for him to do anything to her.

The separation of men and unmarried women in the royal household made access to Tamar difficult. Amnon knew that acting on his desire was wrong and socially forbidden, yet he chose deceit rather than self-control.

Now Amnon had a friend named Jonadab,

Amnon, David’s firstborn son, trusted Jonadab as a close companion and counselor. Jonadab’s position within the extended royal family gave him access to Amnon and influence over his decisions at a critical moment.

Jonadab was a very shrewd man,

Jonadab possessed a calculating intelligence that he used to devise a plan for Amnon rather than restrain him from sin. His counsel became a turning point in the events that brought violence, disgrace, and division into David’s house.

Amnon’s condition had become obvious through his continued grief and withdrawal. His distress arose from sinful desire rather than from a righteous burden.

Jonadab invited Amnon to reveal what troubled him, opening the way for Amnon to disclose his desire for Tamar.

Jonadab told him,

Jonadab, Amnon’s cousin and the son of David’s brother Shimeah, was a shrewd man whose counsel enabled Amnon’s hidden desire. Rather than restraining him, he provided a scheme to bring Tamar into Amnon’s private chamber.

1Ki 17:11-16 And as she was going to get it, he called to her…

Amnon’s demand that Tamar prepare the food before him was designed to separate her from others and bring her under his control.

Gen 18:6-8 So Abraham hurried into the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick!…

What appeared to be a request for personal attention concealed Amnon’s plan to violate his sister, turning family trust and hospitality into instruments of betrayal.

So Amnon lay down and feigned illness.

Amnon deliberately deceived his father in order to bring Tamar into a private setting. As David’s firstborn, he held a prominent place in the royal family, yet he used that position to pursue a sinful desire.

Amnon said, “Please let my sister Tamar come and make a couple of cakes in my sight,

Amnon’s request appeared ordinary and appropriate for a sick son, but it was designed to isolate Tamar. David’s household, already troubled by the consequences of his earlier sin, became the setting for further disorder and grief.

Gen 18:6 So Abraham hurried into the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick!…
Exo 29:2 along with unleavened bread, unleavened cakes mixed with oil…
Lev 2:4 Now if you bring an offering of grain baked in an oven…

Amnon sought a degree of personal attention that would place Tamar alone with him. He exploited the trust of both his father and his sister, turning ordinary family care into an occasion for violence and shame.

Then David sent word to Tamar at the palace:

As king, David could summon members of his household and direct their actions. Tamar lived among the royal family, where her position as David’s daughter gave her honor and security.

1Ki 1:28-31 Then King David said, “Call in Bathsheba for me.”…

“Please go to the house of Amnon your brother

Amnon, David’s firstborn son, had his own residence within the royal household. David regarded the request as an appropriate act of care between siblings and had no reason to suspect Amnon’s deception.

1Sa 17:17-18 One day Jesse said to his son David, “Take this…
Gen 37:13-14 Israel said to him, “Are not your brothers…”…

and prepare a meal for him.”

Preparing food for a sick family member was a normal expression of service and concern. Amnon used David’s trust and Tamar’s obedience to bring her into his house and carry out his wicked plan.

Gen 27:9-10 Go out to the flock and bring me two choice young goats,…
1Ki 17:12-13 But she replied, “As surely as the LORD your God lives,…

So Tamar went to the house of her brother Amnon, who was lying down.

Tamar obeyed her father’s instruction and went to care for Amnon, believing his illness was genuine. As David’s daughter and Amnon’s half-sister, she entered his house in the ordinary confidence of family duty. Amnon’s private setting, however, became the place where he intended to exploit her trust.

2Ki 4:32-35 When Elisha reached the house, there was the boy…

She took some dough, kneaded it, made cakes in his sight, and baked them.

Tamar carefully prepared the food Amnon requested, carrying out a customary household task with kindness and innocence. Amnon watched her closely, not because he desired her service, but because he was arranging an opportunity to be alone with her. Her faithful care stands in sharp contrast to his deceit and the violence that followed.

Gen 18:6-8 So Abraham hurried into the tent and said to Sarah, “Quick!…
1Sa 28:24-25 The woman had a fattened calf at her house,…
1Ki 17:13-15 “Do not be afraid,” Elijah said to her…

Then she brought the pan and set it down before him,

Tamar faithfully carried out her brother’s request, serving him with the care expected within the royal household. She had no reason to suspect that Amnon’s claimed illness concealed a cruel purpose. The ordinary setting of preparing and serving food makes the violence about to occur even more grievous.

1Sa 28:25 She served it to Saul and his servants, and they ate.…
Gen 18:8 Then Abraham brought curds and milk and the calf…

but he refused to eat.

Amnon’s refusal revealed that food was never his true concern. He had used his supposed sickness to bring Tamar into his presence and now abandoned the pretense.

1Ki 13:8-9 But the man of God replied, “If you were to give me…
Gen 24:33 Then a meal was set before the man, but he said,…

“Send everyone away!” said Amnon.

As the king’s son, Amnon could command the servants to leave. Removing others from the room was deliberate, leaving Tamar alone and unprotected from the abuse he intended.

Gen 45:1 Then Joseph could no longer control himself…
Mrk 6:36 Dismiss the crowd so they can go to the surrounding…

And everyone went out.

The servants obeyed without knowing Amnon’s purpose. Tamar’s isolation exposed the misuse of royal authority and set the stage for the sin that would bring lasting sorrow and division to David’s house.

Mrk 5:40 And they laughed at Him. After He had put them all outside,…

Then Amnon said to Tamar,

Amnon, David’s firstborn, used his position as Tamar’s half-brother to draw her into a private setting. Tamar was the daughter of David and Maacah and had no reason to suspect that her brother’s request concealed evil intent.

“Bring the food into the bedroom,

Amnon’s claim of illness gave him an excuse to isolate Tamar from others in the household. What appeared to be an ordinary act of service became part of his deliberate plan.

Gen 43:30 Joseph hurried out because he was moved to tears…

By requesting her personal care, Amnon exploited the trust and obligations within the royal family. His words presented him as weak and dependent while concealing his determination to harm her.

Tamar responded obediently and innocently, carrying out the task assigned to her. Her preparations belonged to the ordinary duties of the household, making Amnon’s deception all the more grievous.

And when she had brought them to him to eat,

Amnon abandoned all restraint and used his position and physical strength against Tamar. What began as a false request for help became an assault upon the safety and honor owed to a sister within David’s household.

and said, “Come lie with me, my sister!”

Amnon openly demanded what God’s law forbade and what their family relationship made especially grievous. By calling her “my sister,” he acknowledged the bond he was violating. His sin exposed the growing disorder within David’s family and brought lasting sorrow and division.

Pro 7:18-23 Come, let us take our fill of love till morning.…
Gen 19:31-35 One day the older daughter said to the younger,…

“No, my brother!” she cried.

Tamar appeals to Amnon as a member of her own family, making his intended act a betrayal of both kinship and royal responsibility. Her urgent cry reveals her fear and resistance.

Gen 13:8 So Abram said to Lot, “Please let there be no contention…
1Ki 20:32 So with sackcloth around their waists and ropes…

for such a thing should never be done in Israel.

Tamar recognizes that Amnon’s action defies the standards God gave Israel. His sin would bring dishonor upon her, himself, and David’s household.

Gen 34:7 When Jacob’s sons heard what had happened, they returned…
Jos 7:15 The one who is caught with the things devoted to destruction…
Deu 13:11 Then all Israel will hear and be afraid,…

Do not do this disgraceful thing!

She makes one final appeal to restrain him from an act that would leave lasting ruin. Amnon’s refusal to listen sets in motion grief, anger, and violence within David’s family.

Jdg 20:6 Then I took my concubine, cut her into pieces,…
Deu 22:21 she shall be brought to the door of her father’s house,…
Gen 19:7 “Please, my brothers,” he pleaded, “don’t do such a wicked…”…

Where could I ever take my shame?

Tamar recognizes that Amnon’s assault would leave her publicly disgraced and severely damage her future within Israel.

Jer 3:25 Let us lie down in our shame; let our disgrace cover us.…
Ezk 16:63 when I make atonement for all you have done, …
Psa 44:15 All day long my disgrace is before me, and shame has covered…

And you would be like one of the fools in Israel!

Amnon would bear the guilt and dishonor of a man who rejects God’s law and acts wickedly against his own family.

2Sa 3:33 And the king sang this lament for Abner: Should Abner die…
1Sa 25:25 My lord should pay no attention to this scoundrel Nabal…

Please speak to the king, for he will not withhold me from you.”

Desperate to prevent the crime, Tamar urges Amnon to seek David’s intervention rather than force himself upon her. Her appeal does not excuse his intended sin but exposes the violence and selfishness of his plan.

1Ki 2:17 Please speak to King Solomon, since he will not turn you…
1Ki 2:20 “I have just one small request of you,” she said.…

But Amnon refused to listen to her,

Amnon rejected Tamar’s appeal to honor God’s law, protect her, and pursue a lawful course of action. His refusal revealed a deliberate choice to pursue sinful desire despite her warnings of the shame and lasting harm it would cause.

Deu 22:28-29 If a man encounters a virgin who is not pledged in marriage…

Then Amnon hated Tamar with such intensity

Having violated Tamar, Amnon’s lust turned to contempt. What he had pursued as desire was never faithful love, and his hatred exposed the selfishness and brutality of his actions.

Psa 109:4-5 In return for my love they accuse me…
Psa 41:9 Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared…
Psa 55:12-14 For it is not an enemy who insults me; that I could endure.…

that his hatred was greater than the love he previously had.

His former “love” sought his own satisfaction; once that desire was fulfilled, he rejected Tamar rather than accepting responsibility for the harm he had done.

Deu 21:15-17 If a man has two wives, one beloved and the other unloved…
Gen 29:30-31 Jacob slept with Rachel as well. So he worked for Laban…
Rom 9:13 So it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

“Get up!” he said to her.

Amnon treated Tamar with cold authority, showing no concern for her grief, shame, or future.

Gen 19:15 At daybreak the angels hurried Lot along, saying,…
Exo 12:31 Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron by night and said……
Mat 2:13 When the Magi had gone, an angel of the Lord appeared…

“Be gone!”

By sending her away, he added rejection to violence. Tamar’s prospects for marriage and security were deeply damaged, and Amnon’s dismissal left her bearing the consequences of his sin.

Gen 21:10-14 Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son…
Gal 4:30 Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son…
Jhn 9:34-35 They replied, “You were born in utter sin,”…

“No,” she replied,

Tamar immediately resisted Amnon, recognizing the evil of what he had done and refusing to accept further mistreatment. Her protest reveals both her innocence and the injustice of her situation.

Jdg 19:23-24 The owner of the house went out and said to them,…
Gen 19:7-8 “Please, my brothers,” he pleaded, “don’t do such a wicked…”…
Gen 39:10 Although Potiphar’s wife spoke to Joseph, he refused…

“sending me away is worse than this great wrong you have already done to me!”

Having violated Tamar, Amnon now intended to cast her aside. Such abandonment would leave her publicly disgraced and without the marriage and family security ordinarily expected for a daughter of the king. His treatment of her compounded the harm already done.

Deu 22:28-29 If a man encounters a virgin who is not pledged in marriage…
Exo 22:16-17 If a man seduces a virgin who is not pledged in marriage…
Mal 2:14-16 Yet you ask, “Why?” It is because the LORD has been a witness…

But he refused to listen to her.

Amnon’s desire had turned to contempt, and he ignored Tamar’s appeal. His refusal marked the beginning of lasting sorrow within David’s household and set the events in motion that would lead to Absalom’s revenge.

Pro 1:24-25 Because you refused my call, and no one took…
Jer 11:8 Yet they would not obey or incline their ears,…
Zec 7:11-13 But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn…

Instead, he called to his attendant and said,

Amnon used the authority of his position as the king’s son to command a household servant. Tamar had no voice in the decision, and the servant was expected to obey his master.

1Sa 16:17 And Saul commanded his servants, “Find me someone…”…
Mat 22:8 Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready,…
Luk 15:22-24 But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick!…

“Throw this woman out

Amnon’s cold description of Tamar shows his rejection of her after violating her. Rather than treating her as his sister and a daughter of the royal house, he cast her aside, adding public disgrace to the harm he had already done.

2Ki 9:33-35 “Throw her down!” yelled Jehu. So they threw her down…
Gen 21:10-11 Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son…
Jhn 9:34-35 They replied, “You were born in utter sin,”…

and bolt the door behind her!”

The order made the rejection final. Tamar was expelled from Amnon’s presence without protection, comfort, or any acknowledgment of his responsibility for what he had done.

2Ki 4:4-5 Then go inside, shut the door behind you…
Gen 19:10-11 But the men inside reached out, pulled Lot into the house…
Mat 25:10-12 But while they were on their way to buy it…

So Amnon’s attendant threw her out and bolted the door behind her.

Amnon’s cruelty followed his violation of Tamar. By ordering her expelled and the door secured, he publicly rejected her and left her disgraced and unprotected. The servant’s compliance reveals the moral disorder within David’s household, where Amnon’s authority enabled further injustice.

Gen 21:10-14 Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son…
Gen 19:6-11 Lot went outside to meet them, shutting the door behind him.…
Mat 25:10-12 But while they were on their way to buy it…

Now Tamar was wearing a robe of many colors,

Her robe marked her as a virgin daughter of the king, honored within the royal family and set apart by her position. Its presence intensifies the tragedy, since the garment represented the dignity and protection Tamar should have received.

Gen 37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than his other sons…
Gen 37:23 So when Joseph came to his brothers, they stripped him…
Gen 37:31 Then they took Joseph’s robe, slaughtered a young goat,…

because this is what the king’s virgin daughters wore.

The clothing identified the king’s unmarried daughters and reflected their place within the royal household. Amnon’s sin therefore dishonored not only Tamar but also David’s family and the order David was responsible to uphold.

Absalom’s Revenge on Amnon

Two years later,

Absalom had concealed his anger over Tamar’s violation while Amnon remained unpunished. The delay allowed resentment to deepen and made his revenge appear less immediate.

2Sa 14:28 Now Absalom lived in Jerusalem two years.…
Gen 41:1 After two full years had passed, Pharaoh had a dream:…

when Absalom’s sheepshearers were at Baal-hazor

Sheepshearing was a prosperous, festive occasion marked by feasting. Absalom used the celebration to gather the royal family without arousing suspicion.

By inviting every royal prince, Absalom ensured that Amnon would attend while disguising his true purpose as a family celebration.

1Ki 1:9-10 And Adonijah sacrificed sheep, oxen, and fattened calves…

And he went to the king and said,

Absalom approached David respectfully, presenting his request as a loyal son and servant while concealing his plan against Amnon.

Est 5:1 On the third day, Esther put on her royal robes.…
Est 5:2 As soon as the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court,…

1Sa 25:2 Now there was a man in Maon whose business was in Carmel.…
1Sa 25:4 While David was in the wilderness, he heard that…

Will the king and his servants please come with me?”

The invitation honored David and included the royal court, but it also provided Absalom an opportunity to gather the king’s sons at a distant feast. David’s presence would have given the occasion greater legitimacy, though Absalom’s true purpose was to arrange Amnon’s death for violating Tamar.

“If not,” said Absalom,

Absalom, whose name means “father of peace,” pressed David after the king declined his earlier invitation. Though David did not yet know Absalom’s purpose, Absalom had been nursing resentment against Amnon since Tamar’s violation.

1Ki 2:20 “I have just one small request of you,” she said.…
2Sa 14:12 Then the woman said, “Please, may your servant speak…
Gen 18:32 Finally, Abraham said, “May the Lord not be angry,…

“please let my brother Amnon go with us.”

Absalom’s appeal concealed his plan to kill Amnon. The sheep-shearing feast provided a setting where Amnon would be relaxed and vulnerable among Absalom’s servants.

1Sa 20:6 If your father misses me at all, tell him…
1Ki 1:9 And Adonijah sacrificed sheep, oxen, and fattened calves…
Psa 41:9 Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared…

“Why should he go with you?” the king asked.

David sensed that Amnon’s presence was unnecessary, perhaps recognizing the strained relationship between his sons. Yet he did not intervene decisively, and Absalom’s scheme moved forward.

Rut 1:11 But Naomi replied, “Return home, my daughters.…

But Absalom urged him,

Absalom urged David to allow Amnon to go, determined to carry out his plan against him for Tamar’s disgrace. David did not recognize the danger behind Absalom’s invitation.

The king sent Amnon and all the king’s sons, thereby giving Absalom the opportunity he had sought.

Est 5:5 “Hurry,” commanded the king, “and bring Haman,…

and the rest of his sons.

Their presence made the occasion appear to be an ordinary family celebration while Absalom prepared to avenge his sister.

1Ch 3:1-9 These were the sons of David who were born to him in Hebron:…

Now Absalom had ordered his young men,

Absalom had concealed his resentment against Amnon for two years after Tamar’s assault. As a king’s son, he had servants under his authority and used them to carry out a deliberate act of revenge.

2Sa 11:14-15 The next morning David wrote a letter to Joab…
1Ki 21:10-13 But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them testify,…

“Watch Amnon until his heart is merry with wine,

Est 1:10-11 On the seventh day, when the king’s heart was merry…

and when I order you to strike Amnon down, you are to kill him.

The killing was planned, not impulsive. Absalom took vengeance into his own hands and added murder to the violence already dividing David’s household.

1Ki 2:29-34 It was reported to King Solomon: “Joab has fled…
2Ki 10:24-25 And they went in to offer sacrifices and burnt offerings.…

Do not be afraid.

His servants had reason to fear both the deed and the consequences, since Amnon was the king’s eldest son.

Deu 31:6-8 Be strong and courageous; do not be afraid or terrified…
Isa 41:10 Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid…

Have I not commanded you?

Absalom used his position and personal responsibility for the order to compel their obedience.

Jos 1:6-7 Be strong and courageous, for you shall give…
1Ch 22:11-13 Now, my son, may the LORD be with you…

Be courageous and valiant!”

Words suited to honorable battle were used to strengthen men for a treacherous murder.

2Sa 10:12 Be strong and let us fight bravely for our people…
1Ch 28:20 David also said to Solomon his son, “Be strong…

So Absalom’s young men did to Amnon just as Absalom had ordered.

Absalom carried out the revenge he had planned for two years after Amnon’s assault on Tamar. As a royal prince, he had attendants ready to obey him, and they killed Amnon at his command. Absalom acted deliberately rather than seeking judgment from David, taking vengeance into his own hands and setting his rebellion against his father in motion.

2Sa 11:15-17 “Put Uriah at the front of the fiercest battle;”…
1Ki 2:29-34 It was reported to King Solomon: “Joab has fled…
1Sa 22:17-18 Then the king ordered the guards at his side…

Then all the other sons of the king got up, and each one fled on his mule.

The remaining sons of David fled in fear, uncertain whether Absalom’s attack was limited to Amnon or intended for them all. Their hurried departure exposed the terror and disorder within David’s household. Their mules marked their royal standing and provided swift transportation from the feast.

1Ki 1:49 At this, all the guests of Adonijah arose in terror…
2Sa 18:9 Absalom was riding on his mule when he met the servants…
1Ki 1:44 And with Solomon, the king has sent Zadok the priest,…

While they were on the way,

While the messengers were traveling from Absalom’s feast to Jerusalem with news of the attack, a false report reached David that all his sons had been killed. The killing was the culmination of Absalom’s two-year plan to avenge Tamar after Amnon’s assault on her.

1Sa 4:12-13 That same day a Benjamite ran from the battle line…
2Sa 18:24-27 Now David was sitting between the two gates…
2Ki 7:9-10 Finally, they said, “We are not doing what is right.…

a report reached David:

Before reliable details arrived, an alarming account spread to the king’s court. News from a royal gathering could quickly bring fear, especially when David’s sons were involved.

2Sa 18:31-32 Just then the Cushite came and said, “May my lord the king…
1Sa 4:17 The messenger answered, “Israel has fled…

1Sa 31:2-6 The Philistines hotly pursued Saul and his sons…

not one of them is left!”

The false report intensified David’s grief and confusion. Though only Amnon had died, the event exposed the deep division within David’s family and marked a further step toward Absalom’s later revolt.

1Ki 15:29-30 As soon as Baasha became king, he struck down…
2Ki 10:17 When Jehu came to Samaria, he struck down everyone…

Then the king stood up,

David rose in shock at the report that Absalom had ordered the killing of Amnon. The news struck at the heart of his family and kingdom, revealing the violent consequences of the divisions within his household.

But Jonadab, the son of David’s brother Shimeah, spoke up:

Jonadab, David’s nephew, belonged to the royal household and understood its inner tensions. Having earlier encouraged Amnon’s scheme against Tamar, he knew the hatred Absalom had carried since that crime.

2Sa 21:21 and when he taunted Israel, Jonathan the son of David’s…

“My lord must not think they have killed all the sons of the king,

Reports of the attack had caused immediate grief and confusion in David’s court. Jonadab sought to correct the exaggerated report before David acted on false information.

1Ki 2:25 So King Solomon gave orders to Benaiah son of Jehoiada,…

In fact, Absalom has planned this since the day Amnon violated his sister Tamar.

Absalom had waited two years to avenge Tamar’s disgrace. Amnon’s murder was deliberate retaliation, revealing the continuing ruin brought into David’s house by sin, injustice, and unresolved family conflict.

do not take to heart the report

The first message had greatly overstated what happened at Absalom’s feast.

David’s sons had fled in fear after Amnon’s murder, leading to the false impression that all had been killed.

1Sa 4:17 The messenger answered, “Israel has fled…
1Sa 31:6 So Saul, his three sons, his armor-bearer…
1Ch 10:6 So Saul died together with his three sons and all his house.

Only Amnon is dead.”

Absalom had ordered Amnon’s death in revenge for Tamar’s violation. As David’s firstborn, Amnon’s death brought deep personal grief and further exposed the division and violence within David’s house.

2Sa 14:6-7 And your maidservant had two sons who were fighting…
2Sa 18:32-33 The king asked the Cushite, “Is the young man Absalom…
Gen 37:33-35 His father recognized it and said, “It is my son’s robe!”…

Absalom Flees to Geshur

Meanwhile, Absalom had fled.

Having murdered Amnon in revenge for Tamar’s violation, Absalom escaped before David could act against him. His flight marks a further collapse of peace within David’s family and begins the course that would lead to his later revolt against the king.

1Ki 2:28-29 When the news reached Joab, who had conspired with Adonijah…
1Ki 1:50-53 But Adonijah, in fear of Solomon, got up and went…

When the young man standing watch looked up,

A watchman guarded the city and reported approaching travelers or threats to the royal court.

Ezk 33:2-7 “Son of man, speak to your people and tell them:…
Hab 2:1-2 I will stand at my guard post and station myself…

he saw many people coming down the road west of him,

The arrival of a large group raised immediate concern, since news of Amnon’s death could lead David to fear that all his sons had been attacked.

2Ki 9:17-18 Now the watchman standing on the tower in Jezreel…
Gen 32:6-7 When the messengers returned to Jacob, they said,…

The surrounding hills provided routes of travel as well as elevated positions from which movements could be seen.

1Sa 14:4-5 Now there were cliffs on both sides of the pass.…
2Sa 2:24-25 But Joab and Abishai pursued Abner. By sunset, they had gone…

And the watchman went and reported to the king,

David depended on those stationed near the city to bring timely reports during moments of danger and uncertainty.

2Sa 18:24-27 Now David was sitting between the two gates…
2Ki 7:10-11 So they went and called out to the gatekeepers of the city,…

“I see men coming from the direction of Horonaim,

The report identified the approaching group by the route they were taking, helping explain how the king’s sons were returning after the attack at Baal-hazor.

Isa 15:5 My heart cries out over Moab; her fugitives flee…
Jer 48:3-5 A voice cries out from Horonaim: ‘Devastation and…

along the side of the hill.”

The watchman’s careful observation confirmed that a large party was approaching, preparing David for the news that his surviving sons had fled from Absalom.

1Sa 23:26-28 Saul was proceeding along one side of the mountain…
2Sa 15:30-31 But David continued up the Mount of Olives,…

So Jonadab said to the king,

Jonadab, David’s nephew and Amnon’s cousin, had earlier helped Amnon carry out his plan against Tamar. Though he had shown himself shrewd and morally corrupt, he remained close enough to the royal household to speak directly to David in this crisis. David was now confronted with the violence within his own family following Absalom’s murder of Amnon.

2Sa 12:1-7 Then the LORD sent Nathan to David, and when he arrived,…
2Sa 14:4-7 When the woman from Tekoa went to the king,…
1Ki 3:16-20 At that time two prostitutes came to the king…

“Look, the sons of the king have arrived!

David’s sons had fled the scene, fearing Absalom’s actions might extend beyond Amnon. Their return confirmed that Amnon alone had been killed. The arrival of the princes brought the full reality of the tragedy before David and ended the report that all his sons had been murdered.

2Ki 10:13-14 Jehu met some relatives of Ahaziah king of Judah…
2Ki 9:17-20 Now the watchman standing on the tower in Jezreel…
2Sa 18:24-27 Now David was sitting between the two gates…

It is just as your servant said.”

Jonadab’s report proved accurate: Absalom had intended to kill Amnon, not all the king’s sons. His words offered David limited relief, though the death of his firstborn and the fracture of his family remained a severe judgment on the house of David.

2Ki 7:16-20 Then the people went out and plundered the camp……
1Ki 22:28-38 But Micaiah replied, “If you ever return safely,…
1Sa 10:2-7 When you leave me today, you will find two men…

And as he finished speaking,

Jonadab’s report that Amnon alone had been killed is immediately confirmed. The feared slaughter of all David’s sons had not occurred, but the murder of Amnon still brought the judgment and disorder foretold within David’s household.

Num 16:31 As soon as Moses had finished saying all this,…
Exo 34:33 When Moses had finished speaking with them,…

the sons of the king came in, wailing loudly.

David’s surviving sons had fled from Absalom’s feast in terror and now returned grieving their brother’s death. Their mourning revealed both the shock of Amnon’s murder and the fractured condition of the royal family.

Mrk 5:38 When they arrived at the house of the synagogue leader…
1Sa 30:4 So David and the troops with him wept…
Mat 2:18 A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning,…

Then the king and all his servants also wept very bitterly.

David and his court joined the princes in open lamentation. Amnon’s death was not only a personal loss but a public tragedy for the kingdom, exposing the continuing turmoil within David’s house.

2Sa 1:11-12 Then David took hold of his own clothes and tore them…
2Sa 3:31-32 Then David ordered Joab and all the people with him,…
2Sa 18:33 The king was shaken and went up to the chamber over the gate…

Now Absalom fled

After arranging Amnon’s death in retaliation for Tamar’s violation, Absalom fled to avoid David’s judgment. His departure left the royal family divided and intensified the unrest brought into David’s house by his earlier sin. Absalom’s exile also began the course of events that would later lead to his open revolt against his father.

Absalom found refuge with his maternal grandfather in Geshur, a small Aramean kingdom northeast of the Sea of Galilee. David’s marriage to Maacah, Talmai’s daughter, had created this political and family connection. The refuge placed Absalom beyond David’s immediate reach while preserving his claim and influence as a son of the king.

But David mourned for his son every day.

David grieved deeply over the loss of Amnon and the separation from Absalom. The sorrow within his household continued the judgment announced after David’s sin, as violence and conflict marked his family. David’s unresolved grief over Absalom would shape his later decisions and deepen the tragedy of Absalom’s rebellion.

After Absalom had fled

Absalom fled after murdering Amnon in revenge for Tamar’s violation. Though Amnon’s sin had provoked Absalom’s anger, Absalom took judgment into his own hands and knew he could not remain safely in David’s court.
