Berean Study Bible

The Woman Caught in Adultery

But Jesus went to the Mount of Olives.

Jesus withdrew from the conflict and confusion in Jerusalem to the ridge east of the city, across the Kidron Valley. He often spent time there in prayer and teaching. The Mount of Olives would later be the setting for His prayer before His arrest, linking this quiet departure with the events that would lead to the cross.

Luk 21:37 Every day Jesus taught at the temple, but every evening…
Luk 22:39 Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives…
Mrk 13:3 While Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives…

Early in the morning

Jesus returned at daybreak, when the city was beginning its daily activity. The early hour reflects His purposeful ministry and the people’s eagerness to hear Him.

Mrk 1:35 Early in the morning, while it was still dark,…
Luk 24:1 On the first day of the week, very early in the morning…
2Ch 29:20 Early the next morning King Hezekiah gathered…

He went back into the temple courts.

The temple courts were Jerusalem’s central place of worship and public instruction. By teaching there, Jesus openly exercised His authority in the heart of Israel’s religious life.

Mat 21:23 When Jesus returned to the temple courts and began…
Luk 19:47 Jesus was teaching at the temple every day…
Luk 21:37 Every day Jesus taught at the temple, but every evening…

All the people came to Him,

A large gathering assembled around Jesus, drawn by His teaching and His growing public ministry. Their presence would also bring His teaching into direct view of the religious leaders.

Mat 15:30 Large crowds came to Him, bringing the lame, the blind…
Luk 5:15 But the news about Jesus spread all the more,…

and He sat down to teach them.

Sitting was the customary posture of an authorized teacher. Jesus instructed the people as one who spoke with divine authority concerning God’s truth.

Mat 5:1-2 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain…
Luk 4:20 Then He rolled up the scroll, returned it to the attendant,…
Mat 13:2 Such large crowds gathered around Him that He got into a boat…

The scribes and Pharisees, however, brought to Him a woman caught in adultery.

The scribes and Pharisees were influential religious authorities, trained in the Law and committed to its traditions. They brought the woman before Jesus during His public teaching, seeking to place Him in a difficult legal and religious dispute. Adultery was a grave offense under the Law, yet only the woman was presented, though both participants were accountable. Their selective accusation exposed the injustice of their approach and their readiness to use her case against Jesus.

Deu 22:22 If a man is found lying with another man’s wife,…
Lev 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife…
Num 5:16-18 The priest is to bring the wife forward and have her stand…

They made her stand before them

This phrase suggests a public and humiliating display, intended to shame the woman and put Jesus in a difficult position. The leaders' focus on the woman rather than the sin itself reveals their intent to use her as a tool against Jesus.

Mrk 3:3 Then Jesus said to the man with the withered hand,…
Act 5:27 They brought them in and made them stand before…
Deu 19:17 both parties to the dispute must stand in the presence of…

and said,

The scribes and Pharisees brought their charge publicly before Jesus, seeking a ruling they could use against Him.

Luk 10:25 One day an expert in the law stood up to test Him.…

this woman

Only the woman was brought forward, though the Law held both parties accountable for adultery. Their selective accusation exposed their unjust purpose.

Num 5:13-14 sleeping with another man, and it is concealed…
Deu 22:23-24 If there is a virgin pledged in marriage to a man…
Lev 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife…

was caught

They claimed direct evidence sufficient to establish a serious legal charge.

Jer 2:26 As the thief is ashamed when he is caught,…
Pro 5:22 The iniquities of a wicked man entrap him;…

in the act of adultery.

Adultery was a grave sin under the Law of Moses. By presenting the woman without the man and demanding Jesus’ judgment, the accusers sought to trap Him between the demands of the Law and Roman authority.

Deu 22:22 If a man is found lying with another man’s wife,…
Pro 6:32-33 He who commits adultery lacks judgment;…
Heb 13:4 Marriage should be honored by all and the marriage bed…

In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such a woman.

The Law prescribed death for adultery, reflecting the seriousness of covenant unfaithfulness and the need for holiness and justice in Israel. Stoning was carried out by the community under lawful testimony and judgment. The leaders’ focus on the woman alone, without presenting the man involved, exposes the irregularity of their accusation.

Deu 22:22-24 If a man is found lying with another man’s wife,…
Lev 20:10 If a man commits adultery with another man’s wife…
Deu 17:6-7 On the testimony of two or three witnesses…

So what do You say?”

The scribes and Pharisees sought to force Jesus into a conflict with either Moses’ Law or Roman authority, which controlled capital punishment in Judea. Their question was intended to discredit Him, not to secure justice. Jesus would expose their hypocrisy while upholding both the righteousness of God’s law and the need for mercy toward the repentant.

Luk 20:20-26 So they watched Him closely and sent spies…
Mat 22:15-18 Then the Pharisees went out and conspired to trap Jesus…
Mrk 12:13-17 Later, they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians…

They said this to test Him,

The religious leaders were not seeking a just judgment but a way to trap Jesus. By placing Him between the demands of the Law and Roman authority, they hoped His answer would damage His standing with either the people or the authorities.

Mat 22:15 Then the Pharisees went out and conspired to trap Jesus…
Mrk 12:13 Later, they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians…
Luk 20:20 So they watched Him closely and sent spies…

in order to have a basis for accusing Him.

Their purpose was to find grounds to condemn Him and weaken His growing influence. They had already opposed His authority and sought reasons to portray Him as violating God’s Law.

Luk 6:7 Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus, …
Mrk 3:2 In order to accuse Jesus, they were watching…
Mat 12:10 and a man with a withered hand was there.…

But Jesus bent down and began to write on the ground with His finger.

Jesus did not immediately answer their demand. His deliberate action restrained the confrontation and exposed the accusers’ own need for judgment. The text does not reveal what He wrote, keeping attention on His response to their hypocrisy.

Exo 31:18 When the LORD had finished speaking with Moses…
Deu 9:10 Then the LORD gave me the two stone tablets,…
Dan 5:5 At that moment the fingers of a human hand appeared…

When they continued to question Him,

When they continued to question Him, the scribes and Pharisees persisted in seeking a ruling that would either oppose the Law of Moses or place Jesus in conflict with Roman authority. Their concern was not justice for the woman but an accusation against Him.

Mat 22:15 Then the Pharisees went out and conspired to trap Jesus…
Mrk 12:13 Later, they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians…
Luk 20:20 So they watched Him closely and sent spies…

He straightened up and said to them,

Jesus answered with calm authority, directing attention from the woman’s guilt to the guilt of her accusers.

Mat 22:18-21 But Jesus knew their evil intent and said, “You hypocrites,…
Mrk 12:15-17 But Jesus saw through their hypocrisy and said,…
Luk 20:23-25 But Jesus saw through their duplicity and said to them,…

“Let him who is without sin among you

No one present could claim freedom from sin or moral superiority before God. Those prepared to condemn her were required to examine their own lives first.

1Jn 1:8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves…
Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
Ecc 7:20 Surely there is no righteous man on earth…

be the first to cast a stone at her.”

The Law prescribed judgment for adultery, but it also required truthful witnesses and just proceedings. Jesus did not deny the seriousness of sin; He exposed the hypocrisy and sinful motives of those using the woman to test Him.

Deu 13:9-10 Instead, you must surely kill him. Your hand must be…
Deu 17:7 The hands of the witnesses shall be the first…
Deu 22:24 you must take both of them out to the gate…

And again He bent down

Jesus did not answer the accusers immediately. His posture restrained the confrontation and gave them time to consider His challenge: “He who is without sin among you, let him throw a stone at her first.” Though He possessed the authority to judge, He did not act with the harshness or self-righteousness displayed by her accusers.

Psa 18:9 He parted the heavens and came down with dark clouds…
Psa 144:5 Your heavens, O LORD, and come down; touch the mountains…
Psa 113:5-6 Who is like the LORD our God, the One enthroned on high?…

and wrote on the ground.

Scripture does not reveal what Jesus wrote, so the content should not be assumed. His silence and deliberate action exposed the hearts of the men who had brought the woman before Him. One by one, beginning with the oldest, they departed, leaving Jesus alone with her. The moment showed that human judgment must be exercised with righteousness, truth, and mercy.

Jer 17:13 O LORD, the hope of Israel, all who abandon You…
Exo 31:18 When the LORD had finished speaking with Moses…
Exo 32:16 The tablets were the work of God, and the writing…

When they heard this,

When they heard this, Jesus’ accusers were confronted by his demand that the first stone be cast only by one without sin. Though the Law required witnesses to begin an execution, none could claim the moral innocence needed to carry out their accusation.

Mat 19:22 When the young man heard this, he went away in sorrow…

Luk 18:23 But when the ruler heard this, he became very sad,…
Mrk 12:12 At this, the leaders sought to arrest Jesus…

Then Jesus straightened up and asked her,

Jesus rose from where He had been writing on the ground and turned His full attention to the woman. While the religious leaders had treated her as a means to test Him, He addressed her personally and publicly, restoring dignity to one they had exposed and humiliated.

Jhn 4:7-10 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water,…
Mrk 5:33-34 Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her,…

Zec 3:1-4 Then the angel showed me Joshua the high priest…
Rev 12:10 And I heard a loud voice in heaven saying: “Now have come…

Has no one condemned you?”

Without witnesses to testify, no legal judgment could be carried out. Jesus made clear that her accusers were gone, leaving no legal basis for condemnation and leaving her standing before the One who knew both her sin and the truth of the matter.

Rom 8:1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those…
Jhn 3:18 Whoever believes in Him is not condemned,…
Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…

“No one, Lord,” she answered.

With her accusers gone, the woman stood before Jesus alone. Her address recognizes His authority and leaves her case in His hands.

Rom 3:19-20 Now we know that whatever the law says, it says…

Jesus the Light of the World

Once again, Jesus spoke to the people and said,

Jesus continued teaching publicly in the temple courts during the Feast of Tabernacles, when Jerusalem was filled with worshipers. His words were addressed openly to the gathered people, not reserved for religious leaders or a private circle.

Mat 5:1-2 When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain…
Luk 5:1-3 On one occasion, while Jesus was standing by the Lake…
Jhn 18:20 “I have spoken openly to the world,” Jesus answered.…

“I am the light of the world.

During this feast, great lamps illuminated the temple area as a reminder of God’s guidance of Israel in the wilderness. Jesus declared Himself to be the true and lasting light, revealing God and bringing divine truth to a world darkened by sin.

Jhn 9:5 While I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
Jhn 12:46 I have come into the world as a light, so that no one…
Isa 42:6 I, the LORD, have called you for a righteous purpose,…

Whoever follows Me will never walk in the darkness,

To follow Jesus is to trust Him, receive His teaching, and live under His authority. He delivers those who belong to Him from the darkness of spiritual blindness, sin, and separation from God.

Jhn 12:35-36 Then Jesus told them, “For a little while longer…
1Jn 1:5-7 And this is the message we have heard from Him…
1Pe 2:21 For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered…

but will have the light of life.”

Jesus gives eternal life and the spiritual understanding needed to live before God. His light is not temporary or ceremonial; it belongs to all who follow Him and leads them into life with God.

Psa 56:13 For You have delivered my soul from death, …
Jhn 1:4 In Him was life, and that life was the light of men.
2Ti 1:10 And now He has revealed this grace through the appearing…

So the Pharisees said to Him,

The Pharisees were influential religious leaders who emphasized strict observance of the Mosaic Law and the traditions developed around it. In Jerusalem, where Jesus was teaching publicly, they repeatedly challenged His authority and sought grounds to reject His claims.

Mat 12:38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees said to Him…
Mat 16:1 Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came and tested…
Mrk 8:11 Then the Pharisees came and began to argue with Jesus…

“You are testifying about Yourself;

Jewish law required confirming witnesses in legal matters. The Pharisees treated Jesus’ declaration concerning His identity as though it were an ordinary human claim requiring independent human verification. They refused to recognize that He spoke with authority as the One sent by the Father.

Jhn 5:31 If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid.
Jhn 5:32 There is another who testifies about Me,…
Jhn 5:37 And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me.…

Your testimony is not valid.”

Their objection revealed more than concern for legal procedure. They rejected the truth Jesus had made known through His teaching, works, and the Father’s witness. Jesus would answer by showing that His testimony was fully reliable because He knew His origin, His mission, and the One who had sent Him.

Deu 19:15 A lone witness is not sufficient to establish any wrongdoing…
Deu 17:6 On the testimony of two or three witnesses…
2Co 13:1 This is the third time I am coming to you…

Jesus replied,

The Pharisees had questioned the reliability of Jesus’ witness concerning Himself. Their challenge came during the Feast of Tabernacles, when Jesus publicly taught in the temple courts and identified Himself as the light of the world.

Jhn 18:37 “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. You say that I am a king…
Mat 26:64 “You have said it yourself,” Jesus answered.…
Luk 23:3 So Pilate asked Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?”…

“Even if I testify about Myself,

The law ordinarily required two or three witnesses to establish a matter. Jesus did not deny that standard; He showed that His case was unique because He alone fully knew His heavenly origin and destiny.

Jhn 5:31-32 If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid.…
Deu 19:15 A lone witness is not sufficient to establish any wrongdoing…
2Co 13:1 This is the third time I am coming to you…

My testimony is valid,

His testimony was true because He spoke with divine authority and in complete unity with the Father who sent Him.

Jhn 5:36-37 But I have testimony more substantial than that of John.…
1Jn 5:9 Even if we accept human testimony, the testimony of God…
Jhn 12:28-30 “Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven:……

because I know where I came from and where I am going.

Jesus had come from the Father into the world and would return to the Father after completing His saving work. His knowledge was not merely human but belonged to the eternal Son.

Jhn 13:3 Jesus knew that the Father had delivered all things…
Jhn 16:28 I came from the Father and entered the world.…
Jhn 17:5 And now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence…

But you do not know where I came from or where I am going.

The Pharisees judged Him by outward, earthly standards and rejected the truth of His identity. Their refusal to believe left them unable to understand His mission or recognize the One who had sent Him.

Jhn 9:29 We know that God spoke to Moses, but we do not…
Jhn 14:4-5 You know the way to the place where I am going.”…
1Co 2:8 None of the rulers of this age understood it.…

You judge according to the flesh;

The Pharisees evaluated Jesus by outward appearances, human assumptions, and their own legal traditions. They rejected His testimony because they did not recognize His divine origin or the authority of the Father who sent Him.

Jhn 7:24 Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging…
2Co 5:16 So from now on we regard no one according to the flesh.…
Jas 2:1-4 My brothers, as you hold out your faith…

I judge no one.

Jesus’ purpose in His first coming was not to carry out final condemnation but to bring salvation. Though He possesses authority to judge, He was offering light and truth to those who would believe; final judgment would come in God’s appointed time.

Jhn 12:47 As for anyone who hears My words and does not keep them,…
Jhn 3:17 For God did not send His Son into the world…
Luk 9:56 And He and His disciples went on to another village.

But even if I do judge,

Jesus did not deny His authority to judge. Though He came first to save, He possesses the authority of the Son sent from heaven and will judge humanity according to God’s truth.

Jhn 5:30 I can do nothing by Myself; I judge only as I hear. And My judgment is just,…
Jhn 7:24 Stop judging by outward appearances, and start judging…
Psa 96:13 before the LORD, for He is coming—…

My judgment is true,

His judgment is never distorted by ignorance, favoritism, or sin. He knows the hearts and deeds of all people and judges in complete agreement with the Father’s righteous will.

Psa 19:9 The fear of the LORD is pure, enduring forever;…
Psa 119:137 Righteous are You, O LORD, and upright are Your judgments.
Deu 32:4 He is the Rock, His work is perfect; all His ways are just.…

because I am not alone;

Jesus’ testimony and judgment do not rest on merely human witness. The Father stands with Him, confirming the truth of His words and work.

Jhn 16:32 Look, an hour is coming and has already come……
Deu 19:15 A lone witness is not sufficient to establish any wrongdoing…
2Co 13:1 This is the third time I am coming to you…

I am with the Father who sent Me.

Jesus came into the world by the Father’s purpose and authority. His unity with the Father establishes that His judgment is divine, righteous, and final.

Jhn 17:8 For I have given them the words You gave Me,…
Jhn 17:5 And now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence…
Jhn 14:10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father…

Even in your own Law

Jesus appeals to the Torah, the divine standard the Pharisees claimed to uphold.

Jhn 10:34 Jesus replied, “Is it not written in your Law:…
Jhn 7:51 Does our law convict a man without first hearing from him…
Jhn 15:25 But this is to fulfill what is written in their Law:…

Mat 4:10 “Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus told him. “For it is written:…

that the testimony of two men

A matter required confirming witnesses to guard against false accusation and establish the truth. Jesus applies that standard to Himself and the Father, who sent Him and bears witness to His identity and mission.

Mat 18:16 But if he will not listen, take one or two others along…

Their united testimony fully satisfies the Law’s requirement and confirms the truth of Jesus’ claims.

Deu 17:6 On the testimony of two or three witnesses…
Num 35:30 If anyone kills a person, the murderer is to be put to death…
1Ti 5:19 Do not entertain an accusation against an elder…

I am One who testifies about Myself,

Jewish law required the testimony of two witnesses to establish a matter. Jesus openly bears witness to His own identity and mission, speaking as the Son who knows the Father and has come from Him.

Jhn 5:31 If I testify about Myself, My testimony is not valid.
Jhn 18:37 “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. You say that I am a king…
Jhn 7:18 He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory…

and the Father, who sent Me,

The Father sent the Son into the world to accomplish His saving purpose. Jesus’ works, words, and authority reveal that He acts in complete obedience to the Father.

Jhn 5:37 And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me.…
Jhn 7:16 “My teaching is not My own,” Jesus replied.…
1Jn 4:14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent…

also testifies about Me.”

The Father confirmed the Son through His works, the fulfillment of Scripture, and the divine approval shown throughout Jesus’ ministry. Together, the testimony of the Son and the Father establishes the truth of Jesus’ identity and mission.

Mat 3:17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved…
Mat 17:5 While Peter was still speaking, a bright cloud enveloped…
Jhn 12:28 “Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven:……

“Where is Your Father?” they asked Him.

The Pharisees challenged Jesus’ authority by demanding to know His earthly father, likely intending to cast doubt on His legitimacy. They judged Him by human standards and failed to understand that He had come from the Father in heaven.

Jhn 16:28 I came from the Father and entered the world.…
Mat 11:27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father.…
Jhn 1:18 No one has ever seen God, but the one and only Son…

“You do not know Me or My Father,” Jesus answered.

Their religious position and knowledge of Scripture had not brought them into true knowledge of God. By rejecting the Son whom the Father had sent, they showed that they did not truly know the Father.

Jhn 16:3 They will do these things because they have not known…
Jhn 17:25 Righteous Father, although the world has not known You…
Jhn 5:37 And the Father who sent Me has Himself testified about Me.…

“If you knew Me, you would know My Father as well.”

Jesus and the Father are distinct persons yet perfectly united. Jesus reveals the Father’s character, will, and saving purpose; therefore, no one can rightly claim to know God while rejecting Christ.

Jhn 14:7 If you had known Me, you would know My Father as well…
Jhn 14:9 Jesus replied, “Philip, I have been with you all this time…”…
Heb 1:3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory…

He spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts,

Jesus spoke these words while teaching in the temple courts, likely in the Court of Women, a public area where rabbis taught and worshipers gathered. There He taught openly at the center of Jewish religious life, confronting unbelief and revealing His authority before the people and their leaders.

Luk 21:1 Then Jesus looked up and saw the rich putting their gifts…
2Ki 12:9 Then Jehoiada the priest took a chest, bored a hole…

Yet no one seized Him,

Though many opposed Him and the authorities sought grounds to arrest Him, no one seized Him because their plans could not succeed apart from God’s purpose.

Jhn 7:44 Some of them wanted to seize Him, but no one laid a hand…
Mat 26:55 At that time Jesus said to the crowd, “Have you come out…
Jhn 10:39 At this, they tried again to seize Him, but…

because His hour had not yet come.

Jesus would be delivered up only at the appointed time, when He would accomplish His death and resurrection according to the Father’s plan.

Jhn 7:30 So they tried to seize Him, but no one laid a hand on Him…
Jhn 2:4 “Woman, what is that to you and to Me?” Jesus replied.…
Jhn 13:1 It was now just before the Passover Feast,…

Again He said to them,

Jesus continued addressing the religious leaders who had rejected His testimony and questioned His authority.

Jhn 10:7 So He said to them again, “Truly, truly, I tell you,…
Jhn 12:35 Then Jesus told them, “For a little while longer…

“I am going away,

Jhn 7:33 So Jesus said, “I am with you only a little while longer,…

Jhn 7:34 You will look for Me, but you will not find Me;…

So the Jews began to ask,

Jesus’ listeners responded with skepticism to His announcement that He would go where they could not follow. Their repeated opposition revealed their failure to recognize who He was and the purpose of His coming.

Jhn 6:41-42 At this, the Jews began to grumble about Jesus…
Jhn 7:12-13 Many in the crowds were whispering about Him.…
Jhn 10:19-21 Again there was division among the Jews.…

The Truth Will Set You Free

As Jesus spoke these things,

Despite the opposition around Him, many in the crowd accepted His testimony and recognized that His words carried the authority of God. Their response showed that Jesus’ public ministry was drawing people to faith even as hostility against Him increased.

So He said to the Jews who had believed Him,

Luk 14:27 And whoever does not carry his cross…

Then you will know the truth,

Jesus speaks to those who had professed belief in Him, calling them to remain in His teaching as genuine disciples. The freedom Jesus promises is spiritual liberation from sin’s slavery, guilt, power, and judgment. Israel’s history of deliverance from Egypt pointed beyond political liberty to the greater redemption accomplished by the Messiah. Through faith in Christ, believers are freed from sin’s dominion and brought into obedience to God.

Their appeal to Abraham rests on the privileges of Israel’s covenant heritage. A slave does not remain in the house forever,

A slave belonged to the master and could be sold, transferred, or dismissed. His place in the household depended on the master’s will and carried no right of inheritance. Jesus applies this reality to those enslaved by sin: apart from Him, they have no lasting place among God’s people.

Gal 4:1-7 What I am saying is that as long as the heir is a child,…
Gal 4:30 Expel the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s son…
Heb 3:5 Now Moses was faithful as a servant in all God’s house,…

but a son remains forever.

A son belonged to the household by birth and possessed a permanent family standing, including inheritance rights. Jesus, the eternal Son, remains in the Father’s house forever. Those whom He sets free from sin are received into God’s family and share the secure standing of sons and heirs.

So if the Son sets you free,

Jesus identifies Himself as the Son who alone can release people from slavery to sin. His freedom is spiritual and reaches beyond outward circumstances, human effort, or religious heritage. As the promised Messiah, He delivers those who trust in Him from sin’s guilt, power, and final judgment.

Their intention to destroy Jesus exposes the contrast between their claim to honor Abraham and their rejection of the One sent by God. Abraham trusted and obeyed God; those opposing Jesus resist God’s revealed purpose.

Jesus speaks from His eternal relationship with the Father and reveals what He knows firsthand. His teaching carries the authority of the Son, who perfectly makes known the Father’s truth and will.

Jhn 5:19 So Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son……
Jhn 3:32 He testifies to what He has seen and heard,…
Jhn 12:49 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…

and you do what you have heard from your father.”

His opponents’ rejection of Him is shown in their actions. Though they claim descent from Abraham, their desire to oppose and kill Jesus reveals a different spiritual allegiance. Their conduct follows the pattern of the devil rather than the faith and obedience of Abraham.

Jesus exposes the leaders’ murderous intent, showing that their opposition had hardened into rejection of God’s messenger. Their hostility arose because His words and works challenged their authority and unbelief.

Jhn 5:18 Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him.…
Jhn 11:53 So from that day on they plotted to kill Him.

Though fully divine, Jesus speaks as the incarnate Son who stands before them in true humanity. He has openly declared God’s will rather than seeking personal power or praise.

Jhn 17:8 For I have given them the words You gave Me,…
Jhn 12:49 I have not spoken on My own, but the Father who sent Me…

Abraham never did such a thing.

Abraham responded to God in faith and obedience. Those who claimed Abraham as their father but sought to kill God’s truthful messenger were acting contrary to Abraham’s example.

Heb 11:17-19 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…
Jas 2:21-23 Was not our father Abraham justified by what he did…

Jesus confronts the Jewish leaders by judging their claim to Abraham as their spiritual father according to their conduct. Though they claimed Abraham’s lineage, their resistance to God’s truth and their desire to kill Jesus revealed a different allegiance. Physical descent from Abraham did not guarantee faithfulness to God.

“We are not illegitimate children,” they declared.

The leaders reject Jesus’ charge and defend their standing as covenant people. Their reply may also contain a hostile insinuation concerning the circumstances of Jesus’ birth. They insist that they belong to God’s family and have not turned to another spiritual source.

Deu 23:2 No one of illegitimate birth may enter the assembly…
Rom 8:15-17 For you did not receive a spirit of slavery…

“Our only Father is God Himself.”

They affirm that God alone is their Father and ground their identity in Israel’s covenant relationship with Him. Jesus will show that such a claim must be demonstrated by receiving the One whom God sent. Their refusal to believe Him exposes the difference between claiming God as Father and obeying Him in truth.

Jesus confronts those who have heard His teaching yet refuse to grasp its meaning. Their problem is not a lack of information but a settled resistance to the truth He reveals. The religious leaders and many in the crowd judge His words by their own traditions, ambitions, and unbelief rather than by the Scriptures.

Their rejection of Jesus exposes the condition of their hearts. His teaching threatens their confidence in their own righteousness and challenges their authority, so they will not receive Him or the truth He brings. Their inability to hear Him rightly is bound to their unwillingness to believe Him.

because there is no truth in him.

Deceit is not merely something Satan practices; it marks his character and work.

2Co 11:3 I am afraid, however, that just as Eve was deceived…
Rev 20:10 And the devil who had deceived them was thrown…
1Ki 22:22-23 And he replied, ‘I will go out and be a lying spirit…

When he lies, he speaks his native language,

His lies flow from his own nature, as seen in his corruption of God’s word and promises from the beginning.

Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent…
2Co 11:14 And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades…

because he is a liar and the father of lies.

Satan introduced falsehood into the world and continues to lead people away from God through deception.

Rev 21:8 But to the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable…
Psa 101:7 No one who practices deceit shall dwell in my house…

But because I speak the truth,

Jesus reveals the words and will of the Father without deception or compromise. His teaching exposes the false confidence of those who claimed to know God while resisting the One God had sent.

Jhn 18:37 “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. You say that I am a king…
Jhn 3:32-33 He testifies to what He has seen and heard,…
Jhn 7:18 He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory…

you do not believe Me!

The religious leaders rejected Him because His message confronted their sin and challenged their claim to spiritual authority. Though they witnessed His works and heard His teaching, their hardened hearts kept them from receiving Him as the promised Messiah.

Jhn 10:25-26 “I already told you,” Jesus replied “but you did not believe…
Jhn 5:46-47 If you had believed Moses, you would believe Me…
Jhn 12:37 Although Jesus had performed so many signs…

Which of you can prove Me guilty of sin?

Jesus openly invites His opponents, especially the Pharisees, to bring a valid charge against His conduct or character. Though they had repeatedly accused Him of violating their traditions and claimed He was deceived or demon-possessed, none could establish that He had sinned. His sinlessness distinguished Him from every other man and confirmed the purity required of the promised Messiah.

1Pe 2:22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.”
2Co 5:21 God made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf,…
Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize…

If I speak the truth,

Jesus had faithfully revealed the Father’s will, exposed unbelief, and declared the truth concerning God, sin, and salvation. His words were consistent with His works, and His enemies could not disprove either. Their rejection was not caused by a lack of evidence but by their refusal to receive the truth He proclaimed.

Jhn 18:37 “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. You say that I am a king…
Jhn 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life.…
Jhn 17:17 Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.

why do you not believe Me?

The question exposes the real issue: unbelief in the face of clear testimony. They had heard His teaching and seen His works, yet their hardened hearts kept them from trusting Him. Their inability to convict Him of sin should have led them to consider the truth of His claims.

Jhn 5:46-47 If you had believed Moses, you would believe Me…
Jhn 10:25-26 “I already told you,” Jesus replied “but you did not believe…
Jhn 12:37-38 Although Jesus had performed so many signs…

Whoever belongs to God

Genuine membership in God’s people is shown by faith and submission to His truth, not by ancestry, religious office, or outward association. Jesus addressed leaders who claimed Abraham as their father while rejecting the One sent by God.

Jhn 10:27 My sheep listen to My voice; I know them…
Rom 8:14 For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.
1Jn 4:6 We are from God. Whoever knows God listens to us;…

hears the words of God.

Those who know God receive His revelation with understanding and obedience. Their response to Jesus’ teaching reveals whether they recognize God’s authority in His words.

Luk 8:21 But He replied, “My mother and brothers are those who”…
Luk 11:28 But He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word…
Heb 3:7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: “Today, if you hear…”…

The reason you do not hear

The refusal of Jesus’ opponents was not caused by lack of evidence or knowledge of Scripture. Their hardened hearts kept them from accepting the truth spoken before them.

Mat 13:13-15 This is why I speak to them in parables: ‘Though seeing…
Act 28:26-27 Go to this people and say, “You will be ever hearing…”…
Isa 6:9-10 And He replied: “Go and tell this people, ‘Be ever hearing,…

is that you do not belong to God.”

Jesus exposed the emptiness of their claim to belong to God. Rejecting God’s Son demonstrated that they did not share the faith of Abraham or live under God’s rule.

Jhn 10:26 But because you are not My sheep, you refuse to believe.
Rom 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the flesh,…

Before Abraham Was Born, I Am

The Jews answered Him,

The religious leaders respond with open hostility, rejecting Jesus’ claims and seeking to discredit Him before the people.

Jhn 19:7 “We have a law,” answered the Jews, “and according to that…
Jhn 10:33 “We are not stoning You for any good work,” said the Jews…
Jhn 5:18 Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him.…

“Are we not right to say that You are a Samaritan

Calling Jesus a Samaritan was intended as an insult. Jews and Samaritans had long-standing religious and ethnic divisions, and the leaders used the charge to portray Him as outside Israel’s covenant faith.

Jhn 4:9 “You are a Jew,” said the woman. “How can You ask for…”…
Luk 9:52-53 He sent messengers on ahead, who went into a village…
2Ki 17:29-34 Nevertheless, the people of each nation continued to make…

and You have a demon?”

They also accuse Jesus of being demon-possessed, refusing to recognize that His words and works came from the Father. Their insults reveal their hardened opposition to the One who exposed their unbelief.

Jhn 7:20 “You have a demon,” the crowd replied.…
Jhn 10:20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed and insane.”…
Mat 12:24 But when the Pharisees heard this, they said,…

“I do not have a demon,”

Jesus rejects the charge that He is demon-possessed. His works, teaching, and obedience to God reveal the opposite: He acts in complete harmony with the Father’s will.

Jhn 7:20 “You have a demon,” the crowd replied.…
Jhn 10:20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed and insane.”…
Mrk 3:22 And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem…

Jesus replied,

He answers His accusers directly, exposing the contrast between their slander and His true mission.

Jhn 18:34 “Are you saying this on your own,” Jesus asked…
Mat 26:64 “You have said it yourself,” Jesus answered.…
Mrk 14:62 “I am,” said Jesus, “and you will see the Son of Man…”…

“but I honor My Father,

Everything Jesus does is directed toward the Father’s glory. His words and works demonstrate His unity with the Father and His obedience to the mission He was sent to accomplish.

Jhn 14:31 But I do exactly what the Father has commanded Me,…
Jhn 17:4 I have glorified You on earth by accomplishing…
Jhn 5:30 I can do nothing by Myself; I judge only as I hear. And My judgment is just,…

and you dishonor Me.

Their rejection of Jesus is more than personal contempt; it is rejection of the One sent by God. Though they claim to defend God’s honor, they dishonor His Son.

Jhn 5:23 so that all may honor the Son just as they honor the Father.…
Luk 10:16 Whoever listens to you listens to Me; whoever rejects you…
Mrk 6:4 Then Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown,…

I do not seek My own glory.

Jesus did not pursue honor from the crowds or recognition from the religious leaders. He carried out the Father’s will, spoke the Father’s words, and left His vindication in the Father’s hands.

Jhn 7:18 He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory…
1Th 2:6 Nor did we seek praise from you or from anyone else…
Jhn 5:41 I do not accept glory from men,

There is One who seeks it,

The Father would uphold the Son’s honor and reveal the truth of His identity despite the rejection and insults of His opponents.

Jhn 17:1 When Jesus had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes…
Jhn 12:28 “Father, glorify Your name!” Then a voice came from heaven:……
Isa 42:8 I am the LORD; that is My name! I will not yield My glory…

and He is the Judge.

God judges rightly, unlike the leaders who condemned Jesus according to appearances and human tradition. Their rejection of the Son placed them under the judgment of the One who sent Him.

Psa 50:6 And the heavens proclaim His righteousness,…
Heb 12:23 in joyful assembly, to the congregation of the firstborn…
Gen 18:25 Far be it from You to do such a thing—to kill the righteous…

Truly, truly, I tell you,

Jesus speaks with divine authority, calling attention to a declaration of lasting importance. His words do not merely interpret God’s will; they reveal it.

Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…
Jhn 6:47 Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life.
Jhn 3:3 Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you,…

if anyone keeps My word,

Faithful obedience to Jesus marks those who truly receive Him. Keeping His word involves believing His revelation, remaining in it, and ordering life according to His commands.

Jhn 14:23 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.…
Rev 3:8 I know your deeds. Behold, I have placed before you…
Luk 11:28 But He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word…

he will never see death.”

Jesus promises deliverance from eternal death and separation from God. Though His followers may die physically, they possess eternal life and will share in the resurrection.

Heb 11:5 By faith Enoch was taken up so that he did not see death:…
Luk 2:26 The Holy Spirit had revealed to him that…
Jhn 11:26 And everyone who lives and believes in Me will…

“Now we know that You have a demon!”

The opponents of Jesus treated His claim as proof of madness or demonic influence. Unable to accept His authority or His promise of life, they sought to discredit Him with a grave accusation.

Jhn 7:20 “You have a demon,” the crowd replied.…
Jhn 10:20 Many of them said, “He is demon-possessed and insane.”…
Mrk 3:22 And the scribes who had come down from Jerusalem…

declared the Jews.

In John’s account, this designation commonly identifies those religious authorities and others who openly opposed Jesus, not the Jewish people as a whole.

Jhn 10:33 “We are not stoning You for any good work,” said the Jews…
Jhn 19:7 “We have a law,” answered the Jews, “and according to that…
Jhn 9:24 So a second time they called for the man who had been blind…

“Abraham died, and so did the prophets,

They appealed to the deaths of Abraham and the prophets, revered servants of God, as evidence that death could not be escaped by anyone.

Gen 25:8 And at a ripe old age he breathed his last and died,…
1Ki 19:10 I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of Hosts,…
Act 7:52 Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to persecute?…

yet You say that anyone who keeps Your word will never taste death.

They understood Jesus to be denying physical death altogether. He was speaking of eternal life: those who receive and obey His word will not remain under the power of spiritual death or final judgment.

Jhn 11:26 And everyone who lives and believes in Me will…
Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…
Jhn 6:51 I am the living bread that came down from heaven…

Are You greater than our father Abraham?

The Jewish leaders appealed to Abraham as the honored patriarch of Israel and recipient of God’s covenant promises. Since Abraham had died, they regarded any claim to give life beyond death as an assertion of authority greater than his.

Heb 7:7 And indisputably, the lesser is blessed by the greater.
Gal 3:16-18 The promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed.…
Rom 4:16-18 Therefore, the promise comes by faith…

He died, as did the prophets.

Abraham and the prophets were faithful servants of God, yet all were subject to death. Their mortality sharpened the challenge to Jesus’ promise that those who keep His word will never see death in its final, eternal sense.

Gen 25:8 And at a ripe old age he breathed his last and died,…
Act 7:52 Which of the prophets did your fathers fail to persecute?…
1Th 2:15 who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets…

Who do You claim to be?”

They demanded that Jesus state openly the basis of His authority. His answer would reveal that His identity and mission were not merely greater than Abraham’s in rank, but rooted in His eternal existence and relationship with the Father.

Mrk 14:61-62 But Jesus remained silent and made no reply.…
Mat 26:63-64 But Jesus remained silent. Then the high priest said…
Luk 22:70 So they all asked, “Are You then the Son of God?”…

Jesus answered,

Jesus replied to leaders who challenged His identity and authority while He taught in the temple during the Feast of Tabernacles.

Jhn 2:19 Jesus answered, “Destroy this temple, and in three days”…
Mat 22:29 Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know…
Luk 4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not live…”…

“If I glorify Myself, My glory means nothing.

Self-proclaimed honor would not establish His claims. The honor due to Jesus rests on the Father’s testimony and purpose.

Jhn 7:18 He who speaks on his own authority seeks his own glory…
Jhn 5:41 I do not accept glory from men,
2Co 10:18 For it is not the one who commends himself who is approved,…

The One who glorifies Me is My Father,

The Father publicly affirmed the Son and sent Him to accomplish His saving work. Their relationship reveals Jesus’ unique divine identity and authority.

Jhn 17:1 When Jesus had spoken these things, He lifted up His eyes…
Jhn 17:5 And now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence…
Act 3:13 The God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the God of our fathers…

of whom you say, ‘He is our God.’

Though the leaders claimed to worship Israel’s God, they rejected the One whom the Father had sent. Their refusal to recognize Jesus exposed the distance between their profession and their response to God.

Psa 95:7 For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture…
Psa 100:3 Know that the LORD is God. It is He who made us,…
Deu 26:17 Today you have proclaimed that the LORD is your God…

You do not know Him,

Though they claimed God as their Father and searched the Scriptures, Jesus’ opponents did not truly know God because they rejected the One He had sent.

2Th 1:8 in blazing fire, inflicting vengeance…
1Th 4:5 not in lustful passion like the Gentiles…
Hos 4:1 Hear the word of the LORD, O children of Israel,…

but I know Him.

Jesus speaks as the eternal Son, possessing perfect fellowship with the Father and revealing Him without error.

Jhn 10:15 just as the Father knows Me and I know the Father.…
Mat 11:27 All things have been entrusted to Me by My Father.…

If I said I did not know Him, I would be a liar like you.

Their claim to know God was false because their words and actions opposed His will. Jesus could not deny His relationship with the Father without denying the truth.

Mat 26:74 At that he began to curse and swear to them,…
Tit 1:16 They profess to know God, but by their actions…

1Jn 5:20 And we know that the Son of God has come…
Jhn 17:3 Now this is eternal life, that they may know You…

and I keep His word.

Jesus perfectly obeyed the Father in all things, carrying out the mission for which He was sent.

Jhn 14:23-24 Jesus replied, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word.…
Jhn 15:10 If you keep My commandments, you will remain in My love…
1Jn 2:5 But if anyone keeps His word, the love of God…

Your father Abraham

Abraham received God’s covenant promises concerning a great nation, the land of Canaan, and blessing for all nations through his offspring. Jesus identifies Himself as the fulfillment of the hope rooted in that covenant.

Gen 17:4-5 As for Me, this is My covenant with you:…
Rom 4:11-12 And he received the sign of circumcision as a seal…
Gal 3:7-9 Understand, then, that those who have faith…

rejoiced that he would see My day.

Abraham looked ahead in faith to the promised Messiah and the salvation God would accomplish through Him.

Gal 3:8 The Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles…
Gen 22:13-18 Then Abraham looked up and saw behind him a ram…
Heb 11:17-19 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac…

He saw it and was glad.”

God granted Abraham knowledge of Christ’s coming work, and Abraham rejoiced in the certainty that God would fulfill His promises.

Heb 11:13 All these people died in faith, without having received…
Gen 21:1-7 Now the LORD attended to Sarah as He had said…
Rom 4:20-21 Yet he did not waver through disbelief in the promise of God…

Then the Jews said to Him,

Jesus’ words drew an immediate objection from those disputing with Him in the temple area. They rejected His authority and viewed Him only according to His earthly appearance.

Jhn 10:31-33 At this, the Jews again picked up stones to stone Him.…
Jhn 5:18 Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him.…
Mat 12:14 But the Pharisees went out and plotted…

“You are not yet fifty years old,

They measured His claim by His visible age. Fifty was associated with maturity and established standing, so Jesus seemed far too young to speak as one who had known Abraham.

Num 4:3 men from thirty to fifty years old—…
Num 8:25 But at the age of fifty, they must retire…
Luk 3:23 Jesus Himself was about thirty years old…

and You have seen Abraham?”

Abraham, Israel’s patriarch, had lived nearly two thousand years earlier. Taking Jesus’ words literally, they responded with disbelief, unable to understand His eternal existence.

Jhn 17:5 And now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence…
Jhn 1:1-3 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God…
Col 1:17 He is before all things, and in Him all things…

“Truly, truly, I tell you,”

Jesus speaks with divine authority, preparing His hearers for a claim of highest importance. “Verily, verily” or “Amen, amen” is a solemn affirmation emphasizing the truth and certainty of His statement.

Jhn 3:3 Jesus replied, “Truly, truly, I tell you,…
Jhn 5:24 Truly, truly, I tell you, whoever hears My word…
Jhn 6:47 Truly, truly, I tell you, he who believes has eternal life.

Jesus declared,

He answers those who appealed to Abraham as their spiritual father and measure of faith.

Jhn 4:26 Jesus answered, “I who speak to you am He.”
Jhn 18:37 “Then You are a king!” Pilate said. You say that I am a king…
Jhn 11:25 Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life.”…

“before Abraham was born,

Abraham lived long before Israel became a nation, yet Jesus existed before the patriarch’s birth.

Col 1:17 He is before all things, and in Him all things…
Jhn 17:5 And now, Father, glorify Me in Your presence…
Jhn 1:30 This is He of whom I said, ‘A man who comes after me……

I am!”

Jesus claims eternal existence and identifies Himself with the God of Israel. His opponents understood the claim as blasphemy and sought to stone Him.

Exo 3:14 God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are”…
Isa 41:4 Who has performed this and carried it out,…
Isa 43:10 “You are My witnesses,” declares the LORD…

At this, they picked up stones to throw at Him.

Jesus’ declaration that He existed before Abraham and bore the divine name provoked an immediate attempt to execute Him for what they regarded as blasphemy. Their response revealed both their rejection of His identity and the growing hostility of the religious leaders toward Him.

Jhn 10:31-33 At this, the Jews again picked up stones to stone Him.…
Jhn 11:8 “Rabbi,” they replied, “the Jews just tried to stone You…
Act 7:58 They dragged him out of the city and began to stone him.…

But Jesus was hidden

Their violence could not prevail because the appointed time for His death had not yet come. He remained under the Father’s protection until He would willingly give His life according to God’s purpose.

Jhn 12:36 While you have the Light, believe in the Light,…
Jhn 11:54 As a result, Jesus no longer went about publicly…
Jhn 10:39-40 At this, they tried again to seize Him, but…

and went out of the temple area.

Jesus left the temple courts as His conflict with the authorities intensified. Though many rejected Him in the very center of Israel’s worship, He continued His ministry until the time of His crucifixion.

Mat 24:1 As Jesus left the temple and was walking away,…
Mrk 13:1 As Jesus was leaving the temple, one of His disciples…
Luk 21:37 Every day Jesus taught at the temple, but every evening…
