The Temptation of Jesus

Then Jesus,

Having been baptized by John and publicly affirmed by the Father, Jesus entered the opening stage of His public ministry as the promised Messiah.

full of the Holy Spirit,

He proceeded in the power and guidance of the Spirit, who had descended upon Him at His baptism and anointed Him for His work.

returned from the Jordan

Leaving the place where John was baptizing, Jesus began the course that would lead to His public ministry and ultimately His sacrifice.

Jhn 1:32-34 Then John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending…

and was led by the Spirit

His journey was directed by God’s purpose, not by circumstance, as He willingly followed the Father’s will.

into the wilderness,

The desolate region became the setting for testing and preparation. Israel had failed during its years in the wilderness, but Jesus would remain faithful as He began His mission.

where for forty days He was tempted by the devil.

Forty often marks a period of testing and preparation in Scripture. Israel spent forty years in the wilderness and failed through unbelief, while Jesus entered the wilderness and remained faithful. In a desolate and dangerous setting, Satan sought to divert Him from the Father’s will and His saving mission. Jesus stands as the faithful Son and the second Adam, succeeding where Adam and Israel failed.

Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize…

He ate nothing during those days,

His fast recalls Moses and Elijah, whose periods of fasting preceded significant encounters with God. Jesus deliberately embraced physical weakness while depending fully on the Father. His preparation for public ministry was marked by obedience, prayer, and submission rather than self-reliance.

Exo 34:28 So Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights…
1Ki 19:8 So he got up and ate and drank. And strengthened by that food…
Deu 9:9 When I went up on the mountain to receive the tablets…

and when they had ended, He was hungry.

Jesus’ hunger confirms the reality of His humanity. Though fully divine, He experienced the physical limitations of a human body. Satan’s temptations came at a moment of genuine weakness, yet Jesus remained obedient and trusted the Father’s provision.

The devil said to Him,

After Jesus had fasted forty days in the wilderness, Satan confronted Him at a moment of physical weakness. The devil is a fallen angel who opposes God’s will and seeks to draw people into disobedience. Jesus faced this testing as the true Son of God and the faithful representative of His people.

Mat 4:3 The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God…

“If You are the Son of God,

Satan challenged the identity the Father had publicly affirmed at Jesus’ baptism. He sought to provoke Jesus into acting independently of the Father’s will and using His divine authority to satisfy Himself.

Psa 2:7 I will proclaim the decree spoken to Me by the LORD:…
Heb 1:5 For to which of the angels did God ever say:…

tell this stone to become bread.”

Jesus was genuinely hungry, and He possessed the power to turn stone into bread. Yet doing so at Satan’s suggestion would have meant using His power for self-interest rather than remaining obedient to the Father. Jesus would answer by affirming that life depends on God’s provision and word, not merely physical food.

Deu 8:3 He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna…
Mat 4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not…”…
Jhn 6:31-35 Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness…

But Jesus answered,

After forty days of fasting in the wilderness, Jesus faced the devil’s attempt to turn physical hunger into disobedience. Where Israel failed repeatedly during its forty years in the wilderness, Jesus remained faithful to the Father.

Mat 26:31 Then Jesus said to them, “This very night…
Mrk 7:6 Jesus answered them, “Isaiah prophesied correctly…”…

Physical bread sustains the body, but life ultimately depends on God and submission to His will. Jesus refused to use His divine power apart from the Father’s purpose, showing that obedience to God is greater than immediate physical relief.

Jhn 6:27 Do not work for food that perishes, but for food…

Then the devil led Him up to a high place

Jesus permitted the devil to lead Him to an elevated location as part of the temptation. The setting provided a fitting place for the devil to present the scope of worldly rule and glory before the Messiah.

and showed Him in an instant

The kingdoms were displayed supernaturally in a moment, revealing their power, wealth, and splendor without requiring a physical journey through them.

all the kingdoms of the world.

The vision included the nations and governing powers of humanity, including the dominant Roman world of Jesus’ day. The devil presented earthly dominion as though it were his to grant, seeking to turn Jesus from the path appointed by the Father.

Rev 11:15 The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord…
Dan 7:14 And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship…
Psa 2:8 Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance,…

“I will give You authority over all these kingdoms and all their glory,”

Satan offers Jesus the visible power, wealth, and influence of the world’s nations, inviting Him to gain dominion without following the Father’s appointed path of suffering and redemption. Earthly kingdoms possess real splendor, but their rule is temporary and cannot rival God’s eternal kingdom.

Mat 4:8 the devil took Him to a very high mountain…
Dan 7:14 And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship…
Psa 2:8 Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance,…

he said.

Satan speaks as a personal adversary, seeking to draw Jesus away from complete obedience to the Father. His temptation presents power as an easier alternative to humble service and the cross.

Mat 4:9 “All this I will give You,” he said, “if You will fall down…
Jhn 8:44 You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry…
Rev 12:9 And the great dragon was hurled down—that ancient serpent…

Because of human sin, Satan exercises influence in a fallen world and over its corrupt systems. Yet he does not possess independent sovereignty; his activity remains under God’s ultimate authority.

Satan can promote rulers and exploit human ambition, but he cannot grant lasting authority apart from God’s will. His offer conceals its true cost: allegiance to him rather than worship of God.

Psa 75:6-7 For exaltation comes neither from east nor west,…
Jhn 19:11 Jesus answered, “You would have no authority over Me”…

So if You worship me,

Satan demanded the allegiance that belongs to God alone, offering Jesus a path to earthly rule without the suffering appointed by the Father. The temptation came at the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry, seeking to turn Him from His mission through compromise and idolatry.

Mat 4:10 “Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus told him. “For it is written:…
Deu 6:13 Fear the LORD your God, serve Him only, and take your oaths…
Exo 20:3-5 You shall have no other gods before Me.…

it will all be Yours.”

Satan claimed the world’s kingdoms as though he could freely give them away. Though he exercises temporary influence in a fallen world, all authority ultimately belongs to God. Jesus would receive everlasting dominion through obedience, His death, resurrection, and exaltation—not by yielding to Satan.

Psa 2:8 Ask Me, and I will make the nations Your inheritance,…
Dan 7:14 And He was given dominion, glory, and kingship…
Mat 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven…

But Jesus answered,

After forty days of fasting in the wilderness, Jesus faced the devil’s offer of earthly authority in exchange for worship. He answered as the Son who remained faithful to the Father, refusing the disobedience that had marked humanity since the fall.

Mat 4:10 “Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus told him. “For it is written:…

Mat 4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not…”…

“It is written:

He answered with God’s revealed Word, treating Scripture as the decisive authority against the devil’s temptation.

Jos 24:14 Now, therefore, fear the LORD and serve Him…

Jesus rejected every path to power that required compromise with evil. Worship and service belong exclusively to God, and His kingdom would be established through obedience to the Father rather than submission to the devil.

Then the devil led Him to Jerusalem

The devil continued the temptation by bringing Jesus to Israel’s holy city, the center of its worship, covenant life, and national hope. Jerusalem contained the temple, where sacrifices were offered and where God’s presence was uniquely associated with His people.

Mat 20:18 Look, we are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man…

and set Him on the pinnacle of the temple.

Jesus was placed at a high point of the temple complex, likely visible from the surrounding area and overlooking a steep descent. The setting heightened the public and religious significance of the test, placing the Messiah at the heart of Israel’s worship.

Mat 4:5 Then the devil took Him to the holy city…
Mal 3:1 “Behold, I will send My messenger, who will prepare the way”…

“If You are the Son of God,” he said,

Satan challenged the identity publicly declared at Jesus’ baptism. He sought to entice Jesus to prove His sonship by an extraordinary display rather than by humble obedience to the Father’s will.

Mat 4:3 The tempter came to Him and said, “If You are the Son of God…
Mat 3:17 And a voice from heaven said, “This is My beloved…

“throw Yourself down from here.

The proposed act would have demanded divine rescue and turned trust in God into presumption. Jesus would not use His power to gain attention, force a sign, or depart from the path appointed for Him.

Mat 4:6 “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down.”…
Psa 91:11-12 For He will command His angels concerning you…

For it is written:

Satan appealed to the authority of Scripture during the temptation of Jesus, using God’s own words in an attempt to justify disobedience. He presented a biblical promise while twisting its purpose.

Deu 8:3 He humbled you, and in your hunger He gave you manna…
Mat 4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not…”…

‘He will command His angels concerning You

Satan cited God’s promise of angelic care for those who trust Him, urging Jesus to demand a dramatic rescue. The temptation sought to make Jesus act independently of the Father’s will.

Mat 4:6 “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down.”…
Heb 1:14 Are not the angels ministering spirits sent to serve…

to guard You carefully,

God’s protection is certain, but it does not authorize reckless testing of His faithfulness. Jesus refused to force the Father’s hand or seek public proof of His identity through a needless display of power.

Psa 121:7-8 The LORD will guard you from all evil; He will preserve…
1Pe 1:5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power…

and they will lift You up in their hands,

Satan cited God’s promise of angelic protection to entice Jesus to act presumptuously. He sought to turn confidence in the Father’s care into a demand for public proof.

Psa 91:12 They will lift you up in their hands…
Mat 4:6 “If You are the Son of God,” he said, “throw Yourself down.”…
Heb 1:14 Are not the angels ministering spirits sent to serve…

In the wilderness, where rocky paths made such danger familiar, Satan urged Jesus to test God by leaping from the temple. Jesus refused to force the Father’s hand, remaining obedient where Israel had failed during its wilderness testing.

Psa 121:3 He will not allow your foot to slip; your Protector…
Psa 18:36 You broaden the path beneath me so that…

But Jesus answered,

After fasting forty days in the wilderness, Jesus faced Satan’s temptations with complete obedience to the Father. He answered from God’s Word rather than acting on Satan’s challenge.

Mat 4:7 Jesus replied, “It is also written: ‘Do not put the Lord your…
Mat 4:10 “Away from Me, Satan!” Jesus told him. “For it is written:…
Heb 4:15 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize…

“It also says,

Satan had used Scripture to encourage Jesus to leap from the temple. Jesus answered with God’s command, showing that no part of Scripture may be used to justify disobedience or presumption.

Mat 4:4 But Jesus answered, “It is written: ‘Man shall not…”…
Jhn 10:35 If he called them gods to whom the word of God came—…
Rom 15:4 For everything that was written in the past…

‘Do not put the Lord your God to the test.’”

Israel tested God in the wilderness by doubting His presence and demanding proof of His care. Satan’s proposal would have required the Father to rescue Jesus from danger He had chosen for Himself. Jesus refused to demand a sign and remained the obedient Son where Israel had failed.

Deu 6:16 Do not test the LORD your God as you tested Him at Massah.
Exo 17:2 So the people contended with Moses, “Give us water…”…
1Co 10:9 We should not test Christ, as some of them did,…

When the devil had finished every temptation,

Satan had pressed Jesus with the full course of wilderness testing: hunger, worldly power, and presumptuous self-exaltation. Where Adam fell under temptation, Jesus remained obedient to the Father and sinless in every trial.

Jesus Begins His Ministry

Jesus returned to Galilee

After His baptism and temptation, Jesus began His public ministry in Galilee, the northern region where He had been raised. Its mixed Jewish and Gentile population became the setting for much of His teaching, healing, and calling of disciples.

The Rejection at Nazareth

Then Jesus came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up.

After reading Isaiah in the synagogue at Nazareth, Jesus moved from the public reading to its authoritative interpretation. He presented Himself not merely as a teacher of Scripture but as the One to whom the passage pointed.

All spoke well of Him

Jesus initially received a favorable hearing in the Nazareth synagogue. His teaching had already gained attention throughout Galilee, and the hometown audience recognized the unusual authority and wisdom of His public ministry.

Their familiarity with Jesus became a stumbling block. Knowing His household and ordinary upbringing, they struggled to accept that He was the promised Messiah and spoke with divine authority. Their question anticipates the rejection that soon followed in Nazareth.

Then He went down to Capernaum,

Located on the northwestern shore of the Sea of Galilee, Capernaum was a prosperous fishing and trading town. Its lower elevation compared with Nazareth accounts for the descent. Jesus made it a central base for His Galilean ministry, teaching, healing, and calling disciples there.

Jesus Heals at Peter’s House

After Jesus had left the synagogue,

Mrk 1:29 As soon as Jesus and His companions had left the synagogue,…
Mat 8:14 When Jesus arrived at Peter’s house, He saw…

He went to the home of Simon,

Simon Peter was among the disciples who had begun to follow Jesus. His home in Capernaum became an important setting in Jesus’ Galilean ministry, reflecting the growing closeness between Jesus and those called to serve with Him.

Mrk 1:33 and the whole town gathered at the door.
Jhn 1:42 Andrew brought him to Jesus, who looked at him…

Simon was married, and his mother-in-law’s condition was serious. Fever could quickly become dangerous in the ancient world, where medical treatment was limited. Her illness brought need and concern into the household.

Mrk 1:30 Simon’s mother-in-law was sick in bed with a fever,…
Mat 8:15 So He touched her hand, and the fever left her,…
