Judgment on Babylon
1 כֹּ֚ה (Thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH);
הִנְנִי֙ (behold, I) מֵעִ֣יר (am rousing) עַל־ (against) בָּבֶ֔ל (Babylon),
וְאֶל־ (and against) יֹשְׁבֵ֖י (those who dwelling in) לֵ֣ב (Leb-) קָמָ֑י (Kamai)
ר֖וּחַ (a spirit); מַשְׁחִֽית׃ (destroying).
2 וְשִׁלַּחְתִּ֨י (And I will send) לְבָבֶ֤ל׀ (to Babylon) זָרִים֙ (winnowers),
וְזֵר֔וּהָ (and they will winnow her) וִיבֹקְק֖וּ (and will empty) אֶת־ (-) אַרְצָ֑הּ (her land);
כִּֽי־ (for) הָי֥וּ (they will be) עָלֶ֛יהָ (against her) מִסָּבִ֖יב (all around)
בְּי֥וֹם (on the day) רָעָֽה׃ (of evil).
3 אֶֽל־ (Do not) יִדְרֹ֤ךְ (let bend) הַדֹּרֵךְ֙ (the one bending) קַשְׁתּ֔וֹ (his bow),
וְאֶל־ (and not) יִתְעַ֖ל (let him bring himself up) בְּסִרְיֹנ֑וֹ (in his armor);
וְאַֽל־ (and do not) תַּחְמְלוּ֙ (spare) אֶל־ (toward) בַּ֣חֻרֶ֔יהָ (her young men);
הַחֲרִ֖ימוּ (devote to destruction) כָּל־ (all) צְבָאָֽהּ׃ (of her army).
4 וְנָפְל֥וּ (And will fall) חֲלָלִ֖ים (the slain) בְּאֶ֣רֶץ (in the land) כַּשְׂדִּ֑ים (of the Chaldeans),
וּמְדֻקָּרִ֖ים (and the pierced) בְּחוּצוֹתֶֽיהָ׃ (in her streets).
5 כִּ֠י (For) לֹֽא־ (not) אַלְמָ֨ן (has been forsaken), יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל (Israel) וִֽיהוּדָה֙ (and Judah)
מֵֽאֱלֹהָ֔יו (by his God) מֵֽיְהוָ֖ה (by YHWH of) צְבָא֑וֹת (Hosts);
כִּ֤י (though) אַרְצָם֙ (their land) מָלְאָ֣ה (had been filled) אָשָׁ֔ם (with guilt)
מִקְּד֖וֹשׁ (before the Holy One) יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ (of Israel).
6 נֻ֣סוּ׀ (Flee) מִתּ֣וֹךְ (from the midst) בָּבֶ֗ל (of Babylon), וּמַלְּטוּ֙ (and let save) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) נַפְשׁ֔וֹ (his soul)!
אַל־ (Do not) תִּדַּ֖מּוּ (be cut off) בַּעֲוֺנָ֑הּ (in her iniquity);
כִּי֩ (for) עֵ֨ת (a time) נְקָמָ֥ה (vengeance); הִיא֙ (it is) לַֽיהוָ֔ה (for YHWH)
גְּמ֕וּל (a recompense). ה֥וּא (He) מְשַׁלֵּ֖ם (will complete) לָֽהּ׃ (for her).
7 כּוֹס־ (A cup) זָהָ֤ב (of gold) בָּבֶל֙ (was Babylon) בְּיַד־ (in the hand), יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH)
מְשַׁכֶּ֖רֶת (making drunk); כָּל־ (all) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth)
מִיֵּינָהּ֙ (from her wine); שָׁת֣וּ (drank) גוֹיִ֔ם (the nations)
עַל־ (upon) כֵּ֖ן (thus) יִתְהֹלְל֥וּ (are deranged) גוֹיִֽם׃ (the nations).
8 פִּתְאֹ֛ם (Suddenly) נָפְלָ֥ה (has fallen) בָבֶ֖ל (Babylon) וַתִּשָּׁבֵ֑ר (and has been shattered);
הֵילִ֣ילוּ (Wail) עָלֶ֗יהָ (over her) קְח֤וּ (and take) צֳרִי֙ (balm) לְמַכְאוֹבָ֔הּ (for her pain),
אוּלַ֖י (perhaps) תֵּרָפֵֽא׃ (she can be healed).
9 רִפִּאנוּ (We would have healed) אֶת־ (-) בָּבֶל֙ (Babylon),
וְלֹ֣א (not) נִרְפָּ֔תָה (was she healed);
עִזְב֕וּהָ (leave her)
וְנֵלֵ֖ךְ (and let us go) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) לְאַרְצ֑וֹ (to his land),
כִּֽי־ (for) נָגַ֤ע (reaches) אֶל־ (to) הַשָּׁמַ֙יִם֙ (the heavens), מִשְׁפָּטָ֔הּ (her judgment)
וְנִשָּׂ֖א (and it is lifted up) עַד־ (even to) שְׁחָקִֽים׃ (the clouds).
10 הוֹצִ֥יא (Has brought forth) יְהוָ֖ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) צִדְקֹתֵ֑ינוּ (our righteousness);
בֹּ֚אוּ (come), וּנְסַפְּרָ֣ה (and let us declare) בְצִיּ֔וֹן (in Zion) אֶֽת־ (-)
מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה (the work) יְהוָ֥ה (of YHWH) אֱלֹהֵֽינוּ׃ (our God).
11 הָבֵ֣רוּ (Make bright) הַחִצִּים֮ (the arrows);
מִלְא֣וּ (Gather) הַשְּׁלָטִים֒ (the shields)!
הֵעִ֣יר (Has roused) יְהוָ֗ה (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) ר֙וּחַ֙ (the spirit)
מַלְכֵ֣י (of the kings) מָדַ֔י (of the Medes),
כִּֽי־ (because) עַל־ (against) בָּבֶ֥ל (Babylon), מְזִמָּת֖וֹ (His plan is)
לְהַשְׁחִיתָ֑הּ (to destroy her)
כִּֽי־ (for) נִקְמַ֤ת (the vengeance) יְהוָה֙ (of YHWH), הִ֔יא (it is)
נִקְמַ֖ת (vengeance) הֵיכָלֽוֹ׃ (for His temple).
12 אֶל־ (Against) חוֹמֹ֨ת (the walls) בָּבֶ֜ל (of Babylon), שְׂאוּ־ (set up) נֵ֗ס (the standard)
הַחֲזִ֙יקוּ֙ (make strong), הַמִּשְׁמָ֔ר (the guard)
הָקִ֙ימוּ֙ (make stand) שֹֽׁמְרִ֔ים (the watchmen),
הָכִ֖ינוּ (prepare) הָאֹֽרְבִ֑ים (those laying ambush)!
כִּ֚י (For) גַּם־ (even) זָמַ֣ם (has planned it) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH) גַּם־ (and) עָשָׂ֕ה (He has done) אֵ֥ת (-)
אֲשֶׁר־ (that which) דִּבֶּ֖ר (He spoke) אֶל־ (against) יֹשְׁבֵ֥י (the dwellers) בָבֶֽל׃ (of Babylon).
13 שֹׁכַנְתִּי (O dweller) עַל־ (by) מַ֣יִם (waters), רַבִּ֔ים (many)
רַבַּ֖ת (abundant in) אֽוֹצָרֹ֑ת (treasures),
בָּ֥א (has come), קִצֵּ֖ךְ (your end)
אַמַּ֥ת (the measure) בִּצְעֵֽךְ׃ (of your dishonest gain).
14 נִשְׁבַּ֛ע (Has sworn) יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts) בְּנַפְשׁ֑וֹ (by Himself),
כִּ֣י (Surely) אִם־ (-) מִלֵּאתִ֤יךְ (I will fill you) אָדָם֙ (with men), כַּיֶּ֔לֶק (like the locust);
וְעָנ֥וּ (and they will lift up) עָלַ֖יִךְ (against you) הֵידָֽד׃ס (a shout).
Praise to the God of Jacob
(Isaiah 25:1–12)
15 עֹשֵׂ֥ה (The One making) אֶ֙רֶץ֙ (the earth) בְּכֹח֔וֹ (by His power),
מֵכִ֥ין (establishing) תֵּבֵ֖ל (the world) בְּחָכְמָת֑וֹ (by His wisdom),
וּבִתְבוּנָת֖וֹ (and by His understanding) נָטָ֥ה (He stretched out) שָׁמָֽיִם׃ (the heavens).
16 לְק֨וֹל (At the voice), תִּתּ֜וֹ (he gives forth)
הֲמ֥וֹן (is a multitude) מַ֙יִם֙ (of waters) בַּשָּׁמַ֔יִם (in the heavens);
וַיַּ֥עַל (and He makes come up) נְשִׂאִ֖ים (vapors)
מִקְצֵה־ (from the ends) אָ֑רֶץ (of the earth);
בְּרָקִ֤ים (lightnings) לַמָּטָר֙ (for the rain), עָשָׂ֔ה (He makes)
וַיֹּ֥צֵא (and He brings forth) ר֖וּחַ (the wind) מֵאֹצְרֹתָֽיו׃ (from His storehouses).
17 נִבְעַ֤ר (Is brutish) כָּל־ (every) אָדָם֙ (man) מִדַּ֔עַת (without knowledge);
הֹבִ֥ישׁ (is put to shame) כָּל־ (every) צֹרֵ֖ף (metalsmith) מִפָּ֑סֶל (by the carved image),
כִּ֛י (for) שֶׁ֥קֶר (deception is), נִסְכּ֖וֹ (his molten image)
וְלֹא־ (and no) ר֥וּחַ (breath) בָּֽם׃ (in them).
18 הֶ֣בֶל (A vapor), הֵ֔מָּה (they are) מַעֲשֵׂ֖ה (a work) תַּעְתֻּעִ֑ים (of delusion);
בְּעֵ֥ת (in the time) פְּקֻדָּתָ֖ם (of their visitation) יֹאבֵֽדוּ׃ (they will perish).
19 לֹֽא־ (Not) כְאֵ֜לֶּה (like these is); חֵ֣לֶק (the Portion) יַעֲק֗וֹב (of Jacob)
כִּֽי־ (for) יוֹצֵ֤ר (the Maker) הַכֹּל֙ (of all things); ה֔וּא (He is)
וְשֵׁ֖בֶט (and of the tribe) נַחֲלָת֑וֹ (of His inheritance);
יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֖וֹת (Hosts) שְׁמֽוֹ׃ס (is His name).
Babylon’s Punishment
20 מַפֵּץ־ (A war club) אַתָּ֣ה (you are) לִ֔י (for Me)
כְּלֵ֖י (weapons) מִלְחָמָ֑ה (of war);
וְנִפַּצְתִּ֤י (and I will smash apart) בְךָ֙ (with you) גּוֹיִ֔ם (the nations),
וְהִשְׁחַתִּ֥י (and I will destroy) בְךָ֖ (with you) מַמְלָכֽוֹת׃ (kingdoms);
21 וְנִפַּצְתִּ֣י (and I will shatter) בְךָ֔ (with you) ס֖וּס (the horse) וְרֹֽכְב֑וֹ (and its rider);
וְנִפַּצְתִּ֣י (and I will smash) בְךָ֔ (with you) רֶ֖כֶב (the chariot) וְרֹכְבֽוֹ׃ (and its rider);
22 וְנִפַּצְתִּ֤י (and I will shatter) בְךָ֙ (with you) אִ֣ישׁ (man) וְאִשָּׁ֔ה (and woman);
וְנִפַּצְתִּ֥י (and I will smash) בְךָ֖ (with you) זָקֵ֣ן (old) וָנָ֑עַר (and young);
וְנִפַּצְתִּ֣י (and will shatter) בְךָ֔ (with you) בָּח֖וּר (the young man) וּבְתוּלָֽה׃ (and the maiden);
23 וְנִפַּצְתִּ֤י (and I will smash) בְךָ֙ (with you) רֹעֶ֣ה (the shepherd) וְעֶדְר֔וֹ (and his flock);
וְנִפַּצְתִּ֥י (and I will shatter) בְךָ֖ (with you) אִכָּ֣ר (the plowman) וְצִמְדּ֑וֹ (and his yoke);
וְנִפַּצְתִּ֣י (and I will smash) בְךָ֔ (with you) פַּח֖וֹת (the governors) וּסְגָנִֽים׃ (and rulers).
24 וְשִׁלַּמְתִּ֨י (I will repay) לְבָבֶ֜ל (to Babylon)
וּלְכֹ֣ל׀ (and to all) יוֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) כַשְׂדִּ֗ים (of Chaldea) אֵ֧ת (-)
כָּל־ (for all) רָעָתָ֛ם (the evil) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) עָשׂ֥וּ (they have done) בְצִיּ֖וֹן (in Zion) לְעֵֽינֵיכֶ֑ם (before your⁺ eyes),
נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH).
25 הִנְנִ֨י (Behold, I) אֵלֶ֜יךָ (am against you)
הַ֤ר (O mountain), הַמַּשְׁחִית֙ (destroying)
נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH),
הַמַּשְׁחִ֖ית (The one destroying) אֶת־ (-) כָּל־ (all) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth),
וְנָטִ֨יתִי (and I will stretch out) אֶת־ (-) יָדִ֜י (My hand) עָלֶ֗יךָ (against you)
וְגִלְגַּלְתִּ֙יךָ֙ (and will roll you down) מִן־ (from) הַסְּלָעִ֔ים (the cliffs),
וּנְתַתִּ֖יךָ (and I will make you) לְהַ֥ר (as a mountain) שְׂרֵפָֽה׃ (burning).
26 וְלֹֽא־ (And not) יִקְח֤וּ (will they take) מִמְּךָ֙ (from you) אֶ֣בֶן (a stone) לְפִנָּ֔ה (for a corner),
וְאֶ֖בֶן (or a stone) לְמֽוֹסָד֑וֹת (for a foundation);
כִּֽי־ (but) שִׁמְמ֥וֹת (a desolate wasteland) עוֹלָ֛ם (forever), תִּֽהְיֶ֖ה (you will be)
נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).
27 שְׂאוּ־ (Lift up) נֵ֣ס (a signal) בָּאָ֗רֶץ (on the earth),
תִּקְע֨וּ (blow) שׁוֹפָ֤ר (the shofar) בַּגּוֹיִם֙ (among the nations),
קַדְּשׁ֤וּ (prepare) עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ (against her) גּוֹיִ֔ם (the nations)
הַשְׁמִ֧יעוּ (summon) עָלֶ֛יהָ (against her) מַמְלְכ֥וֹת (the kingdoms)
אֲרָרַ֖ט (Ararat), מִנִּ֣י (Minni), וְאַשְׁכְּנָ֑ז (and Ashkenaz);
פִּקְד֤וּ (appoint) עָלֶ֙יהָ֙ (against her) טִפְסָ֔ר (a general)
הַֽעֲלוּ־ (cause to come up) ס֖וּס (the horses) כְּיֶ֥לֶק (like locust) סָמָֽר׃ (bristling).
28 קַדְּשׁ֨וּ (Prepare) עָלֶ֤יהָ (against her) גוֹיִם֙ (the nations) אֶת־ (-)
מַלְכֵ֣י (the kings) מָדַ֔י (of the Medes), אֶת־ (with) פַּחוֹתֶ֖יהָ (their governors)
וְאֶת־ (and) כָּל־ (all) סְגָנֶ֑יהָ (their rulers)
וְאֵ֖ת (and) כָּל־ (every) אֶ֥רֶץ (land) מֶמְשַׁלְתּֽוֹ׃ (of his dominion).
29 וַתִּרְעַ֥שׁ (And will tremble) הָאָ֖רֶץ (the land) וַתָּחֹ֑ל (and it will writhe),
כִּ֣י (for) קָ֤מָה (will stand) עַל־ (against) בָּבֶל֙ (Babylon), מַחְשְׁב֣וֹת (every plan) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH)
לָשׂ֞וּם (to set) אֶת־ (-) אֶ֧רֶץ (the land) בָּבֶ֛ל (of Babylon) לְשַׁמָּ֖ה (as a desolation)
מֵאֵ֥ין (without) יוֹשֵֽׁב׃ (one dwelling).
30 חָדְלוּ֩ (Have ceased) גִבּוֹרֵ֨י (the mighty men) בָבֶ֜ל (of Babylon) לְהִלָּחֵ֗ם (from fighting),
יָֽשְׁבוּ֙ (they sit) בַּמְּצָד֔וֹת (in their strongholds);
נָשְׁתָ֥ה (has dried up); גְבוּרָתָ֖ם (their might)
הָי֣וּ (they have become) לְנָשִׁ֑ים (like women);
הִצִּ֥יתוּ (they have burned) מִשְׁכְּנֹתֶ֖יהָ (her dwelling places);
נִשְׁבְּר֥וּ (are broken) בְרִיחֶֽיהָ׃ (her bars).
31 רָ֤ץ (Runner) לִקְרַאת־ (to meet) רָץ֙ (runner) יָר֔וּץ (runs),
וּמַגִּ֖יד (and messenger) לִקְרַ֣את (to meet) מַגִּ֑יד (messenger),
לְהַגִּיד֙ (to declare) לְמֶ֣לֶךְ (to the king) בָּבֶ֔ל (of Babylon)
כִּֽי־ (that) נִלְכְּדָ֥ה (is captured) עִיר֖וֹ (his city) מִקָּצֶֽה׃ (at the extremity),
32 וְהַמַּעְבָּר֣וֹת (and the fords) נִתְפָּ֔שׂוּ (have been seized),
וְאֶת־ (and) הָאֲגַמִּ֖ים (the marshes) שָׂרְפ֣וּ (they have burned) בָאֵ֑שׁ (with fire),
וְאַנְשֵׁ֥י (and men) הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה (of the war) נִבְהָֽלוּ׃ס (are terrified).
33 כִּי֩ (For) כֹ֨ה (thus) אָמַ֜ר (says) יְהוָ֤ה (YHWH of) צְבָאוֹת֙ (Hosts), אֱלֹהֵ֣י (the God) יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל (of Israel);
בַּת־ (The daughter) בָּבֶ֕ל (of Babylon) כְּגֹ֖רֶן (is like a threshing floor),
עֵ֣ת (at the time) הִדְרִיכָ֑הּ (it is tread)
ע֣וֹד (yet) מְעַ֔ט (a little while),
וּבָ֥אָה (and will come). עֵֽת־ (The time) הַקָּצִ֖יר (of the harvest) לָֽהּ׃ (for her).
34 אֲכָלָנוּ (Has devoured me) הֲמָמָנוּ (and has crushed me)
נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּר֮ (Nebuchadnezzar) מֶ֣לֶךְ (king) בָּבֶל֒ (of Babylon)
הִצִּיגָנוּ (he has made me stand) כְּלִ֣י (as a vessel), רִ֔יק (empty)
בְּלָעָנוּ (he has swallowed me up) כַּתַּנִּ֔ין (like a monster),
מִלָּ֥א (he has filled) כְרֵשׂ֖וֹ (his belly) מֵֽעֲדָנָ֑י (with my delicacies),
הֱדִיחָנוּ׃ (he has vomited me out).
35 חֲמָסִ֤י (May the violence to me)
וּשְׁאֵרִי֙ (and my flesh)
עַל־ (be upon) בָּבֶ֔ל (Babylon),
תֹּאמַ֖ר (says); יֹשֶׁ֣בֶת (the dweller) צִיּ֑וֹן (of Zion)
וְדָמִי֙ (And my blood) אֶל־ (be toward) יֹשְׁבֵ֣י (the dwellers) כַשְׂדִּ֔ים (of Chaldea),
תֹּאמַ֖ר (says) יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ס (Jerusalem).
36 לָכֵ֗ן (Therefore) כֹּ֚ה (thus) אָמַ֣ר (says) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH);
הִנְנִי־ (Behold, I) רָב֙ (I will plead) אֶת־ (-) רִיבֵ֔ךְ (your case),
וְנִקַּמְתִּ֖י (and I will take vengeance) אֶת־ (-) נִקְמָתֵ֑ךְ (in vengeance for you)
וְהַחֲרַבְתִּי֙ (and I will dry up) אֶת־ (-) יַמָּ֔הּ (her sea),
וְהֹבַשְׁתִּ֖י (and I will make dry) אֶת־ (-) מְקוֹרָֽהּ׃ (her springs).
37 וְהָיְתָה֩ (And will become) בָבֶ֨ל׀ (Babylon) לְגַלִּ֧ים׀ (as heaps),
מְעוֹן־ (an abode for) תַּנִּ֛ים (jackals),
שַׁמָּ֥ה (a horror), וּשְׁרֵקָ֖ה (and a hissing),
מֵאֵ֥ין (without) יוֹשֵֽׁב׃ (one dwelling).
38 יַחְדָּ֖ו (Together) כַּכְּפִרִ֣ים (like young lions); יִשְׁאָ֑גוּ (they will roar)
נָעֲר֖וּ (they will growl) כְּגוֹרֵ֥י (like cubs) אֲרָיֽוֹת׃ (of lions).
39 בְּחֻמָּ֞ם (In their heat)
אָשִׁ֣ית (I will make) אֶת־ (-) מִשְׁתֵּיהֶ֗ם (their feasts),
וְהִשְׁכַּרְתִּים֙ (and I will make them drunk),
לְמַ֣עַן (so that) יַעֲלֹ֔זוּ (they may rejoice),
וְיָשְׁנ֥וּ (and sleep) שְׁנַת־ (a sleep), עוֹלָ֖ם (forever)
וְלֹ֣א (and not) יָקִ֑יצוּ (will they awake),
נְאֻ֖ם (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).
40 אֽוֹרִידֵ֖ם (I will bring them down) כְּכָרִ֣ים (like lambs) לִטְב֑וֹחַ (to the slaughter),
כְּאֵילִ֖ים (like rams) עִם־ (with) עַתּוּדִֽים׃ (male goats).
41 אֵ֚יךְ (How) נִלְכְּדָ֣ה (has been captured)! שֵׁשַׁ֔ךְ (Sheshach)
וַתִּתָּפֵ֖שׂ (and is seized)! תְּהִלַּ֣ת (The praise) כָּל־ (of all) הָאָ֑רֶץ (the earth)
אֵ֣יךְ (how) הָיְתָ֧ה (has become) לְשַׁמָּ֛ה (as a desolation) בָּבֶ֖ל (Babylon)
בַּגּוֹיִֽם׃ (among the nations)!
42 עָלָ֥ה (Has come up) עַל־ (over) בָּבֶ֖ל (Babylon); הַיָּ֑ם (the sea)
בַּהֲמ֥וֹן (with the multitude) גַּלָּ֖יו (of its waves) נִכְסָֽתָה׃ (she is covered).
43 הָי֤וּ (Have become) עָרֶ֙יהָ֙ (her cities) לְשַׁמָּ֔ה (as a desolation),
אֶ֖רֶץ (a land), צִיָּ֣ה (dry) וַעֲרָבָ֑ה (and a desert),
אֶ֗רֶץ (a land) לֹֽא־ (none) יֵשֵׁ֤ב (does dwell), בָּהֵן֙ (in them) כָּל־ (any) אִ֔ישׁ (man)
וְלֹֽא־ (and no) יַעֲבֹ֥ר (does pass) בָּהֵ֖ן (through it) בֶּן־ (son) אָדָֽם׃ (of man).
44 וּפָקַדְתִּ֨י (And I will visit punishment) עַל־ (upon) בֵּ֜ל (Bel) בְּבָבֶ֗ל (in Babylon),
וְהֹצֵאתִ֤י (and I will bring out) אֶת־ (-) בִּלְעוֹ֙ (what he has swallowed); מִפִּ֔יו (from his mouth)
וְלֹֽא־ (and not) יִנְהֲר֥וּ (will flow) אֵלָ֛יו (to him) ע֖וֹד (anymore) גּוֹיִ֑ם (the nations)
גַּם־ (indeed), חוֹמַ֥ת (the wall) בָּבֶ֖ל (of Babylon) נָפָֽלָה׃ (has fallen).
45 צְא֤וּ (Go out) מִתּוֹכָהּ֙ (from the midst of her) עַמִּ֔י (My people),
וּמַלְּט֖וּ (and let deliver) אִ֣ישׁ (each man) אֶת־ (-) נַפְשׁ֑וֹ (his soul)
מֵחֲר֖וֹן (from the burning) אַף־ (of the anger) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).
46 וּפֶן־ (And do not) יֵרַ֤ךְ (grow faint), לְבַבְכֶם֙ (your⁺ heart)
וְתִֽירְא֔וּ (and do not be afraid)
בַּשְּׁמוּעָ֖ה (of the report) הַנִּשְׁמַ֣עַת (being heard) בָּאָ֑רֶץ (in the land);
וּבָ֧א (and for will come) בַשָּׁנָ֣ה (in one year), הַשְּׁמוּעָ֗ה (a report)
וְאַחֲרָ֤יו (and after that) בַּשָּׁנָה֙ (in the year) הַשְּׁמוּעָ֔ה (a report),
וְחָמָ֣ס (and violence) בָּאָ֔רֶץ (is in the land),
וּמֹשֵׁ֖ל (and ruler is) עַל־ (against) מֹשֵֽׁל׃ (ruler).
47 לָכֵן֙ (Therefore), הִנֵּ֣ה (behold), יָמִ֣ים (the days) בָּאִ֔ים (are coming),
וּפָקַדְתִּי֙ (when I will visit punishment) עַל־ (on) פְּסִילֵ֣י (the carved images) בָבֶ֔ל (of Babylon);
וְכָל־ (and all) אַרְצָ֖הּ (her land) תֵּב֑וֹשׁ (will be put to shame),
וְכָל־ (and all) חֲלָלֶ֖יהָ (her slain) יִפְּל֥וּ (will fall) בְתוֹכָֽהּ׃ (in her midst).
48 וְרִנְּנ֤וּ (And they will sing out) עַל־ (over) בָּבֶל֙ (Babylon), שָׁמַ֣יִם (the heavens) וָאָ֔רֶץ (and the earth),
וְכֹ֖ל (and all) אֲשֶׁ֣ר (that is) בָּהֶ֑ם (in them)
כִּ֧י (for) מִצָּפ֛וֹן (from the north), יָבוֹא־ (will come) לָ֥הּ (against her)
הַשּׁוֹדְדִ֖ים (the destroyers)
נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ (of YHWH).
49 גַּם־ (Even) בָּבֶ֕ל (Babylon) לִנְפֹּ֖ל (must fall),
חַֽלְלֵ֣י (for the slain) יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל (of Israel)
גַּם־ (even as) לְבָבֶ֥ל (for Babylon) נָפְל֖וּ (have fallen)
חַֽלְלֵ֥י (the slain) כָל־ (of all) הָאָֽרֶץ׃ (the earth).
50 פְּלֵטִ֣ים (Escapees) מֵחֶ֔רֶב (from the sword),
הִלְכ֖וּ (go), אַֽל־ (do not) תַּעֲמֹ֑דוּ (stand still)!
זִכְר֤וּ (Remember) מֵֽרָחוֹק֙ (from far off), אֶת־ (-) יְהוָ֔ה (YHWH)
וִירֽוּשָׁלִַ֖ם (and Jerusalem) תַּעֲלֶ֥ה (let come up) עַל־ (upon) לְבַבְכֶֽם׃ (your⁺ heart).
51 בֹּ֚שְׁנוּ (We are put to shame), כִּֽי־ (because) שָׁמַ֣עְנוּ (we have heard) חֶרְפָּ֔ה (reproach);
כִּסְּתָ֥ה (has covered) כְלִמָּ֖ה (shame) פָּנֵ֑ינוּ (our faces),
כִּ֚י (for) בָּ֣אוּ (have come) זָרִ֔ים (strangers)
עַֽל־ (upon) מִקְדְּשֵׁ֖י (the holy places) בֵּ֥ית (of the house) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH).
52 לָכֵ֞ן (Therefore), הִנֵּֽה־ (behold), יָמִ֤ים (the days) בָּאִים֙ (are coming),
נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָ֔ה (of YHWH),
וּפָקַדְתִּ֖י (When I will visit punishment) עַל־ (on) פְּסִילֶ֑יהָ (her carved images),
וּבְכָל־ (and in all) אַרְצָ֖הּ (her land) יֶאֱנֹ֥ק (will groan) חָלָֽל׃ (the wounded).
53 כִּֽי־ (Though) תַעֲלֶ֤ה (were to go up) בָבֶל֙ (Babylon) הַשָּׁמַ֔יִם (to the heavens),
וְכִ֥י (and though) תְבַצֵּ֖ר (she were to gather) מְר֣וֹם (the height) עֻזָּ֑הּ (of her strength),
מֵאִתִּ֗י (from Me) יָבֹ֧אוּ (would come) שֹׁדְדִ֛ים (destroyers) לָ֖הּ (against her)
נְאֻם־ (a declaration) יְהוָֽה׃ס (of YHWH).
54 ק֥וֹל (The voice) זְעָקָ֖ה (of a cry)
מִבָּבֶ֑ל (is from Babylon)
וְשֶׁ֥בֶר (and destruction) גָּד֖וֹל (great)
מֵאֶ֥רֶץ (from the land) כַּשְׂדִּֽים׃ (of the Chaldeans)!
55 כִּֽי־ (For) שֹׁדֵ֤ד (is destroying) יְהוָה֙ (YHWH) אֶת־ (-) בָּבֶ֔ל (Babylon),
וְאִבַּ֥ד (and He has destroyed) מִמֶּ֖נָּה (from her) ק֣וֹל (the voice); גָּד֑וֹל (great)
וְהָמ֤וּ (and have sounded) גַלֵּיהֶם֙ (their waves) כְּמַ֣יִם (like waters), רַבִּ֔ים (great)
נִתַּ֥ן (and has given forth); שְׁא֖וֹן (a roar) קוֹלָֽם׃ (their voice).
56 כִּי֩ (For) בָ֨א (is coming) עָלֶ֤יהָ (against her) עַל־ (against) בָּבֶל֙ (Babylon),
שׁוֹדֵ֔ד (the destroyer)
וְנִלְכְּדוּ֙ (and are captured), גִּבּוֹרֶ֔יהָ (her mighty men)
חִתְּתָ֖ה (and is broken); קַשְּׁתוֹתָ֑ם (the strength of their bows)
כִּ֣י (for) אֵ֧ל (the God) גְּמֻל֛וֹת (of recompense) יְהוָ֖ה (is YHWH);
שַׁלֵּ֥ם (paying) יְשַׁלֵּֽם׃ (He will repay).
57 וְ֠הִשְׁכַּרְתִּי (And I will make drunk) שָׂרֶ֨יהָ (her officers), וַחֲכָמֶ֜יהָ (and her wise men)
פַּחוֹתֶ֤יהָ (her governors), וּסְגָנֶ֙יהָ֙ (and her deputies), וְגִבּוֹרֶ֔יהָ (and her mighty men);
וְיָשְׁנ֥וּ (and they will sleep) שְׁנַת־ (a sleep), עוֹלָ֖ם (everlasting)
וְלֹ֣א (and not) יָקִ֑יצוּ (will they awake),
נְאֻ֨ם־ (a declaration) הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ (of the King),
יְהוָ֥ה (YHWH) צְבָא֖וֹת (of Hosts) שְׁמֽוֹ׃ס (is His name).
58 כֹּֽה־ (Thus) אָמַ֞ר (says) יְהוָ֣ה (YHWH of) צְבָא֗וֹת (Hosts);
חֹ֠מוֹת (The walls) בָּבֶ֤ל (of Babylon) הָֽרְחָבָה֙ (broad) עַרְעֵ֣ר (being stripped) תִּתְעַרְעָ֔ר (will be stripped),
וּשְׁעָרֶ֥יהָ (and her gates) הַגְּבֹהִ֖ים (high) בָּאֵ֣שׁ (with fire); יִצַּ֑תּוּ (will be burned)
וְיִֽגְע֨וּ (and will toil) עַמִּ֧ים (the people) בְּדֵי־ (in) רִ֛יק (vain),
וּלְאֻמִּ֥ים (and the nations) בְּדֵי־ (at the abundance) אֵ֖שׁ (of the fire), וְיָעֵֽפוּ׃ס (and will grow weary).
Jeremiah’s Message to Seraiah
59 הַדָּבָ֞ר (The word) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) צִוָּ֣ה׀ (commanded) יִרְמְיָ֣הוּ (Jeremiah) הַנָּבִ֗יא (the prophet) אֶת־ (-) שְׂרָיָ֣ה (Seraiah) בֶן־ (son) נֵרִיָּה֮ (of Neriah), בֶּן־ (son) מַחְסֵיָה֒ (of Mahseiah), בְּלֶכְתּ֞וֹ (at his going) אֶת־ (with) צִדְקִיָּ֤הוּ (Zedekiah) מֶֽלֶךְ־ (the king) יְהוּדָה֙ (of Judah) בָּבֶ֔ל (to Babylon) בִּשְׁנַ֥ת (in the year) הָרְבִעִ֖ית (fourth) לְמָלְכ֑וֹ (of his reign). וּשְׂרָיָ֖ה (And Seraiah was) שַׂ֥ר (the prince) מְנוּחָֽה׃ (of quietness).
60 וַיִּכְתֹּ֣ב (And wrote down) יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ (Jeremiah) אֵ֧ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הָרָעָ֛ה (the evil) אֲשֶׁר־ (that) תָּב֥וֹא (would come) אֶל־ (upon) בָּבֶ֖ל (Babylon), אֶל־ (into) סֵ֣פֶר (scroll) אֶחָ֑ד (one) אֵ֚ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַדְּבָרִ֣ים (the words) הָאֵ֔לֶּה (these) הַכְּתֻבִ֖ים (that were written) אֶל־ (against) בָּבֶֽל׃ (Babylon).
61 וַיֹּ֥אמֶר (And said) יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ (Jeremiah) אֶל־ (to) שְׂרָיָ֑ה (Seraiah), כְּבֹאֲךָ֣ (In your coming) בָבֶ֔ל (to Babylon), וְֽרָאִ֔יתָ (and you should see), וְֽקָרָ֔אתָ (and call out) אֵ֥ת (-) כָּל־ (all) הַדְּבָרִ֖ים (the words); הָאֵֽלֶּה׃ (these).
62 וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ (And you shall say), יְהוָה֙ (O YHWH), אַתָּ֨ה (You) דִבַּ֜רְתָּ (have spoken) אֶל־ (against) הַמָּק֤וֹם (the place), הַזֶּה֙ (this) לְהַכְרִית֔וֹ (to cut it off), לְבִלְתִּ֤י (so that no) הֱיֽוֹת־ (there is) בּוֹ֙ (in it) יוֹשֵׁ֔ב (one remaining) לְמֵאָדָ֖ם (from man) וְעַד־ (even to) בְּהֵמָ֑ה (beast), כִּֽי־ (but) שִׁמְמ֥וֹת (a desolation) עוֹלָ֖ם (forever) תִּֽהְיֶֽה׃ (it will be).
63 וְהָיָה֙ (And it will be that), כְּכַלֹּ֣תְךָ֔ (at your completing) לִקְרֹ֖א (to call out) אֶת־ (-) הַסֵּ֣פֶר (scroll), הַזֶּ֑ה (this) תִּקְשֹׁ֤ר (that you shall tie) עָלָיו֙ (upon it) אֶ֔בֶן (a stone) וְהִשְׁלַכְתּ֖וֹ (and cast it) אֶל־ (into) תּ֥וֹךְ (the midst) פְּרָֽת׃ (of the Euphrates),
64 וְאָמַרְתָּ֗ (and you shall say), כָּ֠כָה (Thus) תִּשְׁקַ֨ע (will sink), בָּבֶ֤ל (Babylon) וְלֹֽא־ (and not) תָקוּם֙ (will she rise) מִפְּנֵ֣י (from the face) הָרָעָ֗ה (of the disaster) אֲשֶׁ֧ר (that) אָנֹכִ֛י (I) מֵבִ֥יא (am bringing) עָלֶ֖יהָ (upon her) וְיָעֵ֑פוּ (and they shall be weary).
עַד־ (Up to) הֵ֖נָּה (here) דִּבְרֵ֥י (are the words) יִרְמְיָֽהוּ׃ס (of Jeremiah).
